Ziรบr - Eyeroll
The world has changed, we shouldn't try and pretend otherwise. While we were shut away in isolation our routines shifted, social patterns evolved, and our hopes and dreams were twisted into cobwebs we're still trying to wipe from our fingers. Ziรบr tentatively approached this on her last album Antifate, an ambitious and complex hybrid pop fever dream that looked back to a Medieval escapist fantasy as the scent of revolution seemed to hum in the air. But when restrictions were eased, she found herself staring down a discombobulated society that had trapped itself in a spiral of microwaved nostalgia and detached, narcotic repetition. Eyeroll then is Ziรบr's musical panacea, a tincture to wake us from our creative slumber and prompt external connection and reflection. It's a polyphonous hex that demands human interaction, and Ziรบr's hand-picked alliance of collaborators - Elvin Brandhi, Abdullah Miniawy, Iceboy Violet, Juliana Huxtable, Ledef, and James Ginzburg - each provide distinct voices that together herald a bewildering sonic epoch. Ziรบr's palette had to evolve to match the scope of the project, but it was pure necessity that informed the album's defining tone. Recording mostly at night, Ziรบr was conscious of the noise she was making so developed a unique way to record organic percussion. Using aย set of rototoms - low profile tunable drums - she scratched, scraped and gently tapped the skins to build up the undulating and unstable rhythmic backdrop for each track. With Eyeroll Ziรบr is making a firm statement about togetherness, humanity, and the renewal of hope when all seems lost. By bringing together such a wide but philosophically harmonic team of collaborators, she's conducted a body of work that speaks to the creative fringe in no uncertain terms. Now's the time to throw away what you think you know, and build bridges you didn't think you need. Now's the time for action. She may have spent her entire career avoiding the solipsistic trappings of "queer art", but by assembling a communal statement that questions so many normative assumptions about music, politics, and beyond, Ziรบr has chanced upon her queerest album yet. Cringe? Eyeroll. All music written and produced by Ziรบr. Rewire, day 1
I went back to Rewire festival again. Read more after the drop. Also, because I had no time to post about Bandcamp Friday yesterday, all links refer to the artistsโ albums Iโd recommend.
The evening started early with a queue. The festival is sold out, so you might as well come early, right? After zoning in and out before getting my wristband, I headed to Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy. This collaboration is 10 years old now and itโs their second appearance at the festival.
Thereโs no change in the set-up. The guys of Carl Gari are a little in the back while Miniaway stands center stage with 2 microphones. One to sing into and the other to occasionally plays his trumpet. The music is dark, at times brooding, Miniaway sings, chants and works the crowd. A good example of the latter is he final track where he makes them shout along, creating an atmosphere of disciplinary order. So, a solid set to start with.
Iโm in no rush, so I wait for those guys to show their faces in the lobby. In the meantime, I grab a couple of songs of Julia Holter. First, I chat with one of the Jonasโs, then later with Abdullah. I had spoken him and the Gari guys at the festival 2 years ago. Anyway, we catch up a bit and talk about the performance โ I tell Abdullah there wasnโt enough trumpet, he laughs and agrees, explaining it was their first gig of the year and they had to get reacquainted โ among other things.
Next, I take a 10-minute walk to get to Mizu. Sheโs a cellist whose album Distant Intervals surprised me last year. And live she doesnโt disappoint either. Next to playing the cello, the performance is enriched with interpretative dance and light. Especially the second appears to really sets the mood. When the room turns green, thunder is heard, followed by dark blue to accompany rain. White and yellow light are for rebirth and Mizu rises back to her feet as the room turns red and an array of beats crash down. All in all, it was an amazing performance, making Friday a success.
After her performance, I took a breather and got the chance to have a chat with her. We talked about her work and some life things (like the importance of change and being able to adapt). Absolute lovely person. Finally, I wished her a safe trip back home and headed outside again.
Aisha Devi was next on the list, but it was still early. So instead, I checked out Tadleeh for a bit. I mostly witnessed her building up her soundscapeโฆ Unfortunately, I couldnโt stay longer, because I really wanted to see Devi.
Like Gari & Miniaway, Devi is also a returning performer. The first time was epic, as she tore up the basement of a techno haunt. This time she got a bigger venue. Flanked by waving flags (courtesy of multiple fans), Devi played last yearโs Death Is Home album plus some oldies I think. It was amazing, it was loud and it was danceable. Devi is a conjuror of sonic spirits, perhaps even an exorcist, as she swayed behind her laptop, setting the crowd in motion. Often she left the table and went to the edge of the stage to sing or say something. Maybe (read: itโs clear) I was too close to the speakers, but I missed out on most of her words. Some of the howls did pull through, if only because I could imagine them joining the beats.
After, I wandered a bit. 33EMBWโs room was full and I think the same went for Maxime Denuc (people were standing outside). I doubted too long and only caught a snippet of Anni Nรถps & Casimir Geelhoed, who had turned their room into pandemonium by the sound of it. So, I called it a night.

#3 Black music influence
I hope one day for the vocals in the music, could be the real Band doing Choir, around 20:00 minutes in my life set, the vocal part sampled from Space Africa, if it is sung Live, it will be more emotional, the live energy, but now I can only choose to use samples. This is the technique I got inspired by Massive Attack, Moor Mother. Black vcal in Soul music brings emotional
This is the Moor mother show in Berlin, how she incorporates different musicians through this Jazz form, but also combied with electronic music elemnt, somehow it reminded of massive attack black music influence in my life. Hiphop, rage against the machine, soul music, also Drum N bass Inner city life from Goldie. I start to study these music influence again, see if i can add influence to this great puzzle. It was like I put different piece of me from the past, now everything from different points in my life start to come together now, like different parts of mirror start to piece together.
Another performance I get inspirstion from is this one at Rewire Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy - Live @ Haus der Kunst
youtube
I saw their live performance at Rewire Festival Hague April. Abdullah's lyrics is powerful spritually. How he talks about religion belief, echos a lot of what i want to express about politics and sprituality.

Album rec: Whities 023 (The Act of Falling from the 8th Floor) by Carl Gari and Abdullah Miniawy.
Just discovered this today. It's similar to 'The Shedding of Skin' by Use Knife in that it also features chilling Arabic vocals in coalescence with modal, electronic beats, but it is comparatively less hectic and 'noisy', and has more of a constant rhythm when compared to 'The Shedding of Skin', which oscillates between more 'intense' rock or electronic beats and melancholic ambient moments.
