Actual fun Hebrew fact א: "lentils and lenses"

The Hebrew word for lentils is עדשים ('adashim), as used in בראשית:

וְיַעֲקֹב נָתַן לְעֵשָׂו לֶחֶם וּנְזִיד עֲדָשִׁים וַיֹּאכַל וַיֵּשְׁתְּ וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלַךְ וַיִּבֶז עֵשָׂו אֶת-הַבְּכֹרָה

(בראשית כ"ה, פסוק ל"ד)

But if you ask what the singular form of the word is, a lot of Hebrew natives will struggle to give the answer.

One immediate answer I got to hear plenty of times is עדש ('adash), which doesn't make much sense if you think about it a bit furthet: the word עדשים is gramatically female, evidently you're supposed to say עדשים אדומות ('adashim adumot) and not אדומים (adumim).

So, the singular of עדשים is actually עדשה ('adasha). Which is sort of refused to accept myself untill I looked into it (and untill I remembered that one translation of "princess and the pea" to modern Hebrew is "הנסיכה והעדשה" (Ha'nsicha VeHa'Adasha)...)

Why is that so weird to people who speak Hebrew natively? Because 'adasha also means "lens" in modern Hebrew. And what is the plural of that word? עדשות ('adashot).

So you have one word, עדשה ('adasha) which means both lentil and lens, but if you change it to singular - you get two different words, עדשים ('adashim) for lentils and עדשה ('adasha) for lens.

So, as happens often, Hebrew plurals are confusing.

Things that the Israeli government apparently considers to be important right now: the name of the war.

It's currently Iron Swords. They're thinking of changing it. Because apparently Iron Swords is a good name for a military operation, it's not a name for a war. And I am so confused by the focus on NAMING this genocide, as if it changes the reality at all.

The possibilities are:

1. Genesis War - מלחמת בראשית

2. Simchat Torah War - מלחמת שמחת תורה

3. Mashiv HaRu'ach War - מלחמת משיב הרוח

Simchat Torah, literally "the joy of the Torah," is the name of the holiday that the October 7 attack fell on.

Mashiv HaRu'ach, "he who makes the wind blow", is a rain blessing/prayer that we start saying on Simchat Torah. Mashiv haru'ach umorid hageshem, he who makes the wind blow and the rain pour.

I'm really uncomfortable with the religious connotation of every one of the names, especially the last two which are distinctly Jewish. It feels like just another way to tangle up Judaism and Israeli violence.

While people in Gaza are being killed through bombs, starvation, dehydration, diseases, and more. This is what my government is doing. And I wish I had the words for how angry I am. The anger isn't new, but this is like. I don't know. "Adding insult to injury" seems to fit. I don't know how to describe it. The callous disregard for human life would match a cartoon villain.

3,300 שנה לאחר שניתנו, עשרת הדברות הם עדיין המדריך הפשוט ביותר והקצר ביותר ליצירתה וקיומה של חברה בריאה.

חלופות רבות נוסו, ובדרך כלל זה נגמר בבכי.

עשרת הדיברות הם הקוד הדתי והמוסרי המפורסם בהיסטוריה. הם עיטרו את אולמות המשפט בארצות הברית, את בית הלורדים באנגליה, ועוד.

צמד הלוחות ועליהם עשרת הדיברות הוא מזה עידן ועידנים סמלו של החוק הנצחי בריבונות האל.

מקובל לחלק את עשרת הדיברות לשני חצאים, חמישה דיברות לכל לוח. זוהי חלוקה גרפית - אך גם עניינית. חמשת הדיברות הראשונים עוסקים במה שבין אדם למקום (ובכלל זה גם מצוות כיבוד אב ואם, שכן הורינו הם שותפיו של אלוקים בהבאתנו אל העולם). החמישה האחרונים עניינם מה שבין אדם לחברו.

זו חלוקה הגיונית, אך יש חלוקה הגיונית נוספת: שלוש קבוצות, שבכל אחת מהן שלושה דיברות - ולבסוף הדיבר העשירי כקבוצה לעצמו.

בדומה לחלוקה של עשרת המכות לדצ"כ עד"ש באח"ב.

שלושת הדיברות הראשונים עוסקים כולם ביחסנו לאלוקים, נותן המצוות הבא איתנו בברית:

האמונה באל אחד, האיסור לעבוד אלוהים אחרים, והאיסור לשאת את שם ה' לשווא.

השלישייה הבאה עניינה היותנו נבראיו של אלוקים:

השבת מזכירה לנו את בריאת העולם; עלינו לכבד את הורינו שהביאו אותנו לעולם הזה; והרצח אסור עלינו מפני שכל בני האדם נבראו בצלם אלוקים (בראשית ט, ו).

השלישייה השלישית עוסקת במוסדות הבסיסיים של החברה:

איסור הניאוף מקדש את הנישואין ואת המשפחה;

האיסור לגנוב מכונן את זכות הקניין;

והאיסור להעיד עדות שקר הוא יסודה של מערכת המשפט והצדק.

בלי כל אחד ואחד מהדברים הללו לא יהיה האדם חופשי, ולא תיתכן חברה חופשית.

מבנֶה זה מדגיש את זרותו של הדיבר העשירי, "לא תחמד".

לפחות במבט שעל פני השטח, דיבר זה שונה מכל קודמיו. הם עסקו במעשים ובדיבורים, ולכל היותר במחשבות שהאדם יכול לשלוט בהן. לעומת זאת, החמדה והקנאה בדבר השייך לזולת, היא רגש. רגש המציף אותנו גם בעל כורחנו.

איך אפשר לאסור עלינו דבר שלא אנו עושים, אלא הוא נעשה בנו? וגם אם אפשר - מה כל כך נורא ברגש התוקף אותנו מפעם לפעם, כל עוד אין הוא מוביל אותנו למעשה?

נראה לי שהתורה מנחילה לנו בדיבר זה סדרה של אמתות יסוד שלבוֹשתֵנו שכחנו.

ראשית, כפי שמלמדת אותנו הצלחתה של שיטת הטיפול הקוגניטיבי-התנהגותי, רגשותינו מושפעים ממחשבותינו.

הרגש שלנו נוצר מהמחשבה שלנו, מהאופן שבו אנו תופסים את המציאות.

כך למשל נרקיסיסטים מרבים להיעלב כי הם חושבים שאנשים אחרים מדברים עליהם או שוללים אותם.

המחשבה שלהם מנותקת מהמציאות, אך היות שכך הם חושבים, הם מרגישים רגש כן של כעס וטינה.

שנית, הקנאה היא מן הגורמים העיקריים לאלימות בחברה.

קנאה גרמה ליאגו להוליך את אותלו שולל, והתוצאות היו רצחניות. ובתורתנו - הקנאה היא שגרמה לקין לרצוח את הבל, ולכל סיפור יוסף ואחיו.

רֶנֶה ז'יראר, בספרו הקלאסי 'אלימות וקדושה', אומר שהגורם הבסיסי ביותר לאלימות הוא התשוקה המימטית - כלומר התשוקה להיות בעליו של מה שיש לאדם אחר, ובעצם, ביסודו של דבר, להיות הוא.

התשוקה הזו עלולה להוביל לעבירה על כמה וכמה מן הדיברות האחרים. להוביל לניאוף, לגניבה, לעדות שקר ואפילו לרצח.

איסור "לא תחמוד" איננו ��שונה אפוא כלל.

החמדה, הקנאה, היא הבסיסי מכל הכוחות המערערים את ההרמוניה החברתית ואת הסדר החברתי.

אחת ה"תרופות" לבעיית הקנאה בחברנו, היא שבמקום להסתכל הצידה, צריך להסתכל למעלה...

למה לנו לחשוק במה שיש לאחרים, אם הדבר החשוב ביותר בחיינו הוא כיצד רואה אותנו הקב"ה? מה אנו בעיניו? למה שנחשוק במשהו רק מפני שישנו לאדם אחר?

כאשר אנו מפסיקים להגדיר את עצמנו ביחס לה', ומתחילים להגדיר את עצמנו ביחס לאנשים אחרים - או אז התחרות, המריבה, החמדנות והקנאה מתחילות להשתלט עלינו ונוטלות מאתנו את אושרנו.

הנוגדן לקנאה הוא הכרת הטוב.

"איזוהי עשיר? השמח בחלקו", אמר התנא בן זומא. מנהג יהודי ידוע ויפהפה הוא לומר מדי בוקר, עם ההתעוררות, "מודה אני לפניך, מלך חי וקיים, שהחזרת בי נשמתי בחמלה. רבה אמונתך". המקיים מנהג זה ברצינות ובהתכוונות מתחיל את היום שלו ברגל ימין. להתחיל את היום בהכרת הטוב, בהודיה - זה הֶרגל שיכול לשנות חיים.

היהדות, סודהּ הוא התודה.

בהתרפאנו מן המחשבה שאושרם של אנשים אחרים מפחית מאושרנו שלנו, אנו יכולים להתחיל לשמוח במה שיש לנו בִּמקום להיות עסוקים במה שאין לנו ויש לאחרים.

אבל חופשיים להיות מה שאנחנו במקום להשתוקק להיות מה שאנחנו לא.

Et si on parlait du Talmud ?

Au lendemain d'une marche contre l'antisémitisme (qui ne sert absolument à rien, mais qui fait croire qu'on fait quelque chose), l'idée n'est peut-être pas idiote de parler de cette ''tranche'' de la spiritualité occidentale qui est si malmenée depuis –disent certains-- le 7 octobre (d'autres disent : des millénaires !). Nous parlons souvent, dans ce Blog, de l'Evangile, et pour cause : les lecteurs fidèles savent que je vois là notre seule chance de résister à la ''chute finale'' en cours... On parle aussi, moins souvent, du Coran, qui ne met pourtant pas de gants pour s'imposer dans nos vies et dans nos villes... Mais le Talmud est l'oublié de notre culture, son peu d'attrait pour le prosélytisme le mettant loin de la lumière des projecteurs.

Si j'ai l'audace de me lancer dans un tel sujet, c'est parce que je me souviens d'avoir suivi pendant toute une année les cours du Lundi du Grand Rabbin Sitruk dont l'intelligence, l'humour et le brio me fascinaient : la proximité ''sur le fond'' de nos cultures, de nos sources et de nos histoires devrait nous rapprocher davantage. (On peut remarquer que si Vatican II puis le Pape François ont chassé pour l'un puis pourchassé pour l'autre le latin comme étant un indésirable perturbateur, ils ont conservé, dans la liturgie post-conciliaire, de nombreux souvenirs de nos origines hébraïques !).

Le Rabbin Sitruk enseignait ''la Foi d'Israël'', et je buvais ses paroles, tout en restant évidemment fidèle à celle de mes Pères... C'était un temps (dans les années '90) où on savait encore faire la différence entre écouter et militer, entre comprendre et rejeter, entre argumenter et insulter. De nos jours, et pour le plus grand malheur de l'intelligence, en deuil de ce qu'elle fut, toute pensée qui a l'audace de s'écarter de la stupide et néfaste ''doxa'' gaucho-progressiste est qualifiée ou disqualifiée d'extrême droite, automatiquement, sans la moindre raison, mais juste... ''parce que''. Et il paraît qu'il faut voir une insulte dans ce qualificatif disqualifiant.

Force est de reconnaître que, pour la majorité de nos contemporains, le ''Talmud'' appartient à cette nébuleuse de mots que l'on emploie sans avoir la moindre idée de ce qu'ils recouvrent. Au mieux, ion y voit une partie de la Torah (Loi écrite transmise par Dieu à Moïse sur le mont Sinaï), que les chrétiens appellent ''le Pentateuque'', c'est-à-dire la traduction de la Torah, qui remplit "cinq rouleaux", penta-teuque en grec. Le Professeur Marc-Alain Oiknine, co-producteur de l'émission ''Judaïques'' sur France-Culture, dit que le Talmud ''parcourt tous tes sujets de la vie quotidienne, de la mort à l'agriculture, via le droit civil, le droit pénal, la famille, ou... le désir, en 6 chapitres sur la relation de l'Homme avec la terre, le temps, la société, le sacré et la mort''! En fait, toutes les préoccupations liées à la vie.

Les ''gentils'' (dits ''goyim'', = les goys : les nations des non-juifs) ont souvent ironisé sur la méthode employée pour s'approcher de la vérité, qui consiste à poser des questions sans fin (NDLR : au temps où on parlait français, on employait le verbe ''talmudiser'' pour dire : chercher la petite bête...). Le philosophe Emmanuel Levinas explique que : ''le malheur est dans la réponse à une question ! On ne s'arrête pas de poser des questions sans jamais être arrêté par une réponse … car elle ferme la recherche et la discussion''. (NB : il utilise, ailleurs, le mot ''ruminer''!). Dans les ''Yeshivot'' (écoles talmudiques), ces confrontations tendent à montrer combien le monde est multiple, complexe, nuancé, subtil...

Le code juridique hébraïque qui est sorti de cette Loi orale transmise de génération en génération (depuis 5784 ans, date (?) du Bereshit --en hébreu : בראשית = commencement), a été compilé, au III è siècle de notre ère, à Tibériade par Rabbi Yeshuda Hannassi : la Mishna (= la répétition) est devenue le socle sur lequel s'appuie la Loi d'Israël. Ce Talmud, dit ''de Babylone'', a été imprimé pour la première fois en 1523 par un vénitien, chrétien, Daniel Bomberg, faisant ainsi du Talmud une articulation constante entre le rite et le rythme de la pensée humaine, refus de tout enfermement de notre pensée dans une vérité unique. Le monde a bien oublié tout cela...

(NDLR : En se replongeant dans les ''fondamentaux'', on comprend mieux pourquoi la pensée juive est rejetée par les enfermés doctrinaires de toute espèce, des politiques aux journalistes et des faux ''Experts'' du covid, hier, (qui étalaient leur absence totale de savoir en invoquant un impossible –car mortel-- ''consensus scientifique'' (sic !), à l'opposé total de ce qu'est la science !), à tous les puristes intégristes de l'Islam, aujourd'hui, qui ont aussi une seule réponse à tout : leur religion à eux. Comme les chrétiens des siècles ''obscurs'' (en 1244 à Paris, ou en 1553 à Rome), les ''islamo-progressistes'' actuels brûlent... de brûler le Talmud en place publique, ''et pas que''.... Sauf que eux ne sortent pas du moyen-âge et devraient savoir... ce qui a été découvert depuis, grâce à l'absence perpétuelle de tout ''consensus scientifique'', justement ! Là où le monde moderne croit tout savoir, la pensée juive érige le doute et le questionnement en valeurs de base.

Par un de ces raccourcis saisissants dont le destin joue parfois, c'est le 7 octobre dernier, ''Dies irae, dies illa ( = jour de colère s'il en fut !), qu'aurait dû s'ouvrir la ''semaine des chrétiens de Terre Sainte''. Personne n'a parlé de cette festivité locale, nulle part, et c'est une insulte à l'intelligence et à la vérité ! J'aurais donc dû ou pu vous parler d'un ''Shabbat'' d'automne, le soleil caressant joliment les pierres jaunes de la Ville Sainte, les ''Khavash'' (= gardes) en grande tenue ouvrant la porte de Jaffa, le Saint Sépulcre vibrant du Te Deum, les foules en liesse... Mais toute lumière s'est éteinte sur cette terre si riche en souvenirs de l'Histoire de l'humanité. Un volcan s'est réveillé et a explosé, détruisant tout, et plus que tout : l'espoir. ''La haine a engendré la haine'', a dit Sa Béatitude le Cardinal Piermaria Pizzabella (NDLR : quel joli nom, pour un porteur de la bonne parole !).

Le diable s'est levé, sur un monde sans justice et sans paix... c'est-à-dire un monde sans Dieu, les dégueulasseries indescriptibles de meurtriers ensanglantés ne pouvant décemment pas être acceptées comme ''faites au nom de Dieu''... quel qu'il soit. ''Allahou Akbar'', que j'ai connu phrase de prière, est devenu synonyme d'appel au meurtre du Blanc, sur la planète entière. Et de l'autre côté, la vengeance est considérée comme devenant ''de droit'', dans certaines circonstances et lorsque l'admissible est dépassé : dans l'absolu, il n'y a plus de relativité... et qu'importent alors le Talmud, la Torah, les Evangiles, tous les ''Shalom'', ''Salam'', ''Pax vobiscum'' (devenu : 'La Paix soit avec vous'')... Il reste la violence, devenue un ''marqueur'' de notre époque.

La Terre, notre chère vieille Terre, est ravagée, détruite, esquintée pour longtemps. Une toute petite lumière persiste à luire dans le cœur de quelques ''Hommes de bonne volonté'' qui veulent encore voir un frère –même éloigné-- dans l'Autre. Dépêchez-vous de la –et de les-- contempler : elle vacille et ils disparaissent. Pourtant, il ne reste plus qu'elle... et eux, pour un tout petit peu de temps, encore !

La diversità di genere nei testi sacri ebraici

I testi sacri ebraici offrono l’opportunità di interagire con una varietà di voci ebraiche che sono state una parte centrale del pensiero e della pratica ebraica negli ultimi duemila anni. I testi stessi parlano tra loro. A volte litigano, a volte sono d'accordo. Tocca a noi entrare nella conversazione e rendere questi testi significativi e rilevanti nella nostra vita.

Termini per la diversità di genere nei testi sacri ebraici:

Zachar:  questo termine deriva dalla parola spada appuntita e si riferisce a un fallo. Di solito è tradotto come "maschio" in inglese.

Nekevah: questo termine deriva dalla parola "fessura" e probabilmente si riferisce a un'apertura vaginale. Di solito è tradotto come "femmina" in inglese.

Androgino: una persona che ha caratteristiche sessuali sia “maschili” che “femminili”. Nel Talmud, l'androgino è inteso come qualcuno che possiede sia un pene che alcuni tratti sessuali femminili. 149 riferimenti nella Mishna e nel Talmud (I – VIII secolo d.C.); 350 nel midrash classico e nei codici giudaici (II-XVI secolo d.C.).

Tumtum: una persona le cui caratteristiche sessuali sono indeterminate o oscurate. Nel Talmud il tumtum ha genitali indeterminati. 181 riferimenti nella Mishna e nel Talmud; 335 nel midrash classico e nei codici giudaici.

Ay'lonit: una persona identificata come “femmina” alla nascita ma che sviluppa caratteristiche “maschili” durante la pubertà ed è sterile. 80 riferimenti nella Mishna e nel Talmud; 40 nel midrash classico e nei codici giudaici.

Saris: una persona identificata come “maschio” alla nascita ma che sviluppa caratteristiche “femminili” durante la pubertà o successivamente. Un sari è considerato maschio, ma non ha pene o ha un pene molto piccolo. Un sari può essere “naturalmente” un sari (saris hamah), o diventarlo attraverso l’intervento umano (saris adam). Questo status è anche conosciuto come eunuco. 156 riferimenti nella Mishna e nel Talmud; 379 nel midrash classico e nei codici giudaici.

Fun Hebrew fact ב: "cakes and circles"

Hebrew has two main roots regarding of circles: עו"ג ('a.u.g) and חו"ג ('h.u.g).

In modern Hebrew, the more common one is עו"ג, from which the words עיגול ('igul, meaning a full circle) and מעגל (ma'agal, meaning an empty circle) are derived.

In older Hebrew, the wore עוגה ('uga) is sometimes used for describing a circle. As in the story of Honi the circle-drawer:

מֶה עָשָׂה? עָג עוּגָה וְעָמַד בְּתוֹכָהּ, וְאָמַר לְפָנָיו: "רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם! בָּנֶיךָ שָׂמוּ פְּנֵיהֶם עָלַי, שֶׁאֲנִי כְּבֶן בַּיִת לְפָנֶיךָ. נִשְׁבָּע אֲנִי בְּשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל, שֶׁאֵינִי זָז מִכָּאן עַד שֶׁתְּרַחֵם עַל בָּנֶיךָ."

Now, this is where it gets interesting: the word עוגה can also mean a round edible in Hebrew:

But the root of עו"ג still means a circle. So, back in , Aharon Ashman, who was a Hebrew poet, made a song for children about making a circle: "עוגה עוגה" ('uga 'uga).

the word "עוגה" in this context is supposed to be the command tense* of לעוג (la'ug), roughly neaning to maje a circle (or in this context to stand in a circle or something alike).

but because the word 'uga has come to mean "cake" in modern Hebrew, this song became the "cake song" in Israeli culture. and pretty much all Israelis think it's the cake song. made to he the cake song. it's become THE cake song. nobody remembers the original meaning

* the actual command tense of the word is עוגו ('ugu) for plural or עוג ('ug) for singular male or עוגי ('ugi) for singular female. the extra ה at the end adds a notion of "let's" to it. in a similar way to how the word הבה (hava) being used in Hava Nagila, with the command tense of the word being havu (plural), hav (singular male), and havi (? i think? for singulae female)

1. The Construct Reality Saga:

Upon waking up, he noticed that his bracelet glows wondering how and why and then it stopped glowing. Then He remembered that someone said to him in his dream that he must utter "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." He uttered it again saying "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." and the bracelet glows up, amazed, he read what was written in his golden bracelet that was not there before, (Ματθαίος 18:26), "18:26", he does not understand what was written except the letters M, a, T, a, i, o and 18:26. "Mataio" "What does 18:26 means? Is it time?". The boy know God ever since he was a kid. He remembered Jesus. "Maybe it is a bible verse." Again, he uttered "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." but loudly this time. "What is it, I am still sleeping", "Just watch". then they read "Matthew 18:26". They each remembered the favorite verse that they learned ever since they were kids. Then they said "For I know the thoughts that I think towards you said God, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope - Jeremiah 29:11". A sling glows up as well the staff that they use to shepherd their flocks and the sword that they never used before. Jay-r picked the tunic of many colors with בראשית 1:3 written in it, Sherwin picked the slingshot מזמור 37:4 and Niko picked the sword with Φιλιππησίους 4:13 written on its blade. They do not know how to read it. The song was heard this time, "Almighty God, my redeemer, my hiding place, my safe refuge, no other name like Jesus, no power can stand against you"... he heard five voices, two woman, two man and a sound of a child. He look where the voices were coming from, "My feet are planted on this rock, and I will not be shaken, my hope it comes from you alone, my Lord and my salvation"... They all look outside but found none. They looked around the house until they found something glowing under Jay-r's bed. They found a chest. And inside it is a glowing Bible. "When I'm weak, You make me strong, when I'm poor, I know I'm rich" It is the Bible which contains the Old Testament books. They all sing "For in the power of your name, all things are possible, all things are possible". They recognize the woman and the man's voice as their parents. It was their mother's and father's voice. "Follow Jesus and you will find us".

Long ago, there was a fairy named Maria Makiling na Walang Kinikilingan. She was born from Adam and Eve after their stories ended in Genesis in the Known World. Adam lived 930 years in the Known World and after that he and Eve were saved by the timeshifters (Time Intergalactic Enjels - T.I.E.) by the command of The King. T.I.E. seeks to find 66 Heroes of Time representing the Books of the Bible to battle The Monarchs and The Elements. T.I.E. have powers of invisibility, flight and powers of time. But with these powers, they should not meddle with history.

Who converts Saviors of Time into artifacts and transport them into the Construct Reality (The World Behind the Sun, where there was no time)

Over the years in the Known World, she was known as Kannoyon and Bulakna. Her husband's name is Lakan Malakas who from the Known World who is a Deviant (Humans that were exposed to the black beans spread by the Monarchs or the Fallen Enjels in the beggining of time of the Known World making them Earth's Aswangs or Monsters). He is also known as Lapu-Lapu and Lam-ang. Their son Sawili, lives in the Known Reality and is part Aswang. He is a shapeshifter and from their lineage came the moden-day Aswang of the Philippines in 2023 which is the setting of Known World. They are shapeshifters which can shapeshift from any human form, animal or element. Sawili is an immortal and has one goal that his father commanded him, to preserve the black beans hoping to convert it to rainbow beans to convert back the Deviants in the whole world. Unlike Lakan Malakas' lineage, other Deviants are unperfect. Maria Makiling made the black bean pure by making it a rainbow bean that made Lakan Malakas normal while retaining the powers imbued to him by the black bean. To convert a black bean, 4 ingredients must be present, the water from the Construct World's Philippines, the golden bracelet and the Staff of Caduceus (which cast spells, legend says that it can heal anything, it is also called Bond) and the Rod of Asclepius (which can translate scriptures, legend says that it can transform anything, it is called Beauty). The Monarchs do not know this but they the stole Staff of Caduceus from Maria Makiling.
