PHOTOS: Official glamglare SXSW 2019 Showcase
https://i1.wp.com/glamglare.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/official-glamglare-sxsw-showcase-.jpg?fit=1000%2C667&ssl=1
Our second annual official SXSW showcase took place in the beautiful venue of The Townsend, which is – as opposed to many other Austin venues – dedicated to the enjoyment of music: the bar is outside the actual music room and stage and the dark walls invite to listen rather than talk. Our 2019 lineup reflected the diversity we try to uphold on glamglare: the artists hailed from five different countries and four of the acts were female-fronted.
Musically we reached from electronic pop over indie rock to folk. Yes, we understand that during SXSW you hop in and out of venues as your schedule demands it, but we and a few others had a great time at The Townsend for the entire night.
Big THANKS to all participating artists who made this a highly enjoyable and memorable event:
åMBe – Electro-pop from Brooklyn, NY.
Eliza Shaddad – Singer-songwriter from London, England.
GIUNGLA – Pop rock from Bologna, Italy.
GIRL SKIN – Folk Pop from Brooklyn, NY.
Alice Phoebe Lou – Singer/songwriter from Berlin, Germany via South Africa.
ISLAND – Indie rock from London, England.

Kaiya - Games
Kaiya is a driven, passionate and charismatic artist with a truly unique approach to electronic music and indie-pop. Her recent single, “Games”, blurs the lines between the two worlds, bringing songwriter sensibilities to punchy and crisp electronic music productions. Created with the collaboration of Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter and producer Åmbe and her production partner Brian Forbes, this song is a great blend of textural atmospheres, lush melodies and emotional lyricism, echoing the work of artists such as Daughter, Sohn, Flume, The XX or Angel Olsen, just to mention but a few. “Games” is an essentially catchy track, but there is also a lot of complexity to it, adding depth to the song’s layers and to the artist’s heartfelt vocal performance. For a debut single, this tune showcases a lot of potential for a great new talent based in NYC!

TOP 15 SONGS of 2018 - Elke's Picks
https://i2.wp.com/glamglare.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/top-15-songs-of-2018-elkes-picks.jpg?fit=1000%2C667&ssl=1
What makes a great song? Better yet, what particular element(s) characterizes your favorite songs? Thinking about what to do for 2018, whether to compile a Top 10 album list, or a Top 10 song list or what not, I realized that among all my favorite songs for the passing year are some tracks that truly stand out. And surprisingly, for me, they all stand out for different reasons.
There is one song, if hard pressed to name a number one, it would be “Knife Skies” [1] for its unusual beat, for rock music anyway (a waltz), and the fantastic vocals. And then there is a close second, a track I knew I would love throughout the year from the first moment I have heard it, “Edison” [2]. The progression is just so sublime. Catering to my nostalgic feelings is “Charli” [3], full on.
When I was fortunate enough to hear a raw cut of “Darling” [4] before its release earlier this year, I started to cry, overwhelmed by its sheer beauty. The track moved me tremendously and it still does. Lyrics, vocals, arrangement… The reason why I love “The Boatmen” [5] is because it keeps me on my toes. I find it rather unnerving with its unusual instrumentation. It is magnificent how uncomfortable and then again not it can make you feel.
Release comes in form of “Love Talk” [6] and “Ache” [7], two incredibly catchy pop tracks that stay with you from turning in to bed and waking up again, right back into your ears again. Even if you haven’t listened to either of them for days, they turn up again unexpectedly. Crazy catchy and super good!
I love something dreamy as much as the next shoegaze fan and so, “The Ocean Bed”[8], is it, because this track hits all the right notes”. Gorgeous vocals, irresistible melody, catchy hooks… “Digital Sleep” [9] is it. Still after all this time! Where is something for the dance floor? Something to sing along with? A track to get truly excited about? “Hearbeat” [10] is the one!
“Silence” [11] has a rather interesting build-up, something you don’t see or more adequately hear coming. Then there are songs, that are simply awesome and it is impossible to pin point anything in particular. I tried for the better half of a year to come up with something but to no avail like “Quaterly Projections” [12] which is dark, dirty, and delicious. Simply listen to it.
“Flying” [13] makes you feel exactly like that or at the very least wanting to try. “Real Estate” [14] is a gorgeous folk pop track that hits all the right registers and “She” [15] absolutely needs to be in this list because I knew it had to be ever since I listened to the song for the very first time.
Enjoy my Top 15 playlist of 2018 and check Oliver’s selection too:

Four Days of Networking, Inspiration and Music at Mondo.NYC 2018
https://i1.wp.com/glamglare.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/mondo.nyc-2018.jpg?fit=2898%2C1932&ssl=1
After weeks of anticipation, even the best of times come to an end and so the music and technology festival and conference Mondo.NYC wrapped up its third year yet has already announced its return for next year. Mark the date, October 15 to 18 and check their website for updates to follow as early as next month!
While we focused on networking and seeing bands play live, we also made it to some of the excellent daytime programming with Your DIY Toolbox To Effectively Market Your Music, Guild of Music Supervisors: Ad Agencies & The In-House Music Supervisor/Producer and The Artistry in Music being our top three favorites. The latter of course, as star studded as it was, turned out to be a special treat.
The panelists were Lenny Kaye, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Richard Barone and Leah Hennessey and all four of them including their host/moderator George Flannagan (manager of Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn) were incredibly interesting and charming. For me, they did the panel’s topic justice and put artistry front and center, and didn’t shy away to tell interesting stories and inspire in big amounts. Bravo! More like this please!
In our pre-coverage we anticipated a flurry of bands and sadly it is impossible to see everybody we would have wanted to see. Over the course of four days though, and this being New York City with lots of temptations, we caught the live shows of some of our local favorites like New Myths, GIRL SKIN, Gabrielle Marlena, åMBe and Mars Motel.
But Mondo.NYC being an industry festival, showcasing international acts who normally would not or no longer play the smaller venues, we were excited to having seen joyful pop rockers Kingswood from Australia (touring Europe now!), singer/songwriter Little Wise, also from Australia, jangly indie rock quintet Brass Phantoms from Ireland, garage pop quartet Casper Skulls from Canada and from the same country Karimah, who played a powerful and empowering solo set, as well as enchanting Elinda from Sweden. Or from not so far abroad, although the West Coast sometimes feels that way, King Daniel.
Each and every act was amazing and we are happy to have seen them live. Some for the first time, and others on repeat.
To get an idea of the festival, browse our photo gallery and stay tuned for Mondo.NYC 2019 to inspire and ignite again.

SONG PICK: åMBe - Ache
Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter/producer åMBe kicks off her year in music with “Ache”, an ultra-stunning electro-pop single. What might sound like misery on the surface, is essentially empowering, facing what ails you and overcoming it. There are some serious hooks in “Ache”, which all conclude in one big swirl of bright vocals, glittering guitars and shimmering sounds, showcasing åMBe’s broad vocal power and incredible talent. Listen to “Ache”, our Song Pick of the Day:

PHOTOS: glamglare presents: I Am Snow Angel, The Black Soft, åMBe, Nerve Leak, MAJO
In October, we went all indie-electronic, probably our first show focused on this genre only. Those in attendance were in for a treat as these acts tend to make themselves rare and keep their live performances sparse.
Opening the evening, and being the most ‘pop’ was MAJO convincing with her blend of dreamy synths pop with R&B elements.
Followed by Sam Friedman aka Nerve Leak, whom we were fans of ever since we featured his single DR34M5 but never had an opportunity to actually see live and wow, were we surprised: have a look at the photos and see for yourself and next time make sure to see Sam live!
Taking the middle spot, åMBe delighted with her cinematic and sweeping electro pop blend, sporting emotive and wide-ranging vocals, paired with exquisite songwriting chops and an impressive stage presence.
Changing gears were The Black Soft performing material from their upcoming dreamy nu wave album.
Closing the night was I Am Snow Angel and we could not have been happier to have hosted the acclaimed singer, composer and electronic producer Julie Kathryn. I Am Snow Angel also granted us a sneak peek into her new album, which will be darker. Stay tuned for more to come. It will be amazing!
Big THANKS to all artists who were part of this fantastic electronic centric night. Enjoy here some photos and follow these amazing musicians.

Mondo.NYC Day Two Roundup: Grit, The Good Night Darlings, Holy Golden, Brass Phantoms, åMBe
On Thursday we saw old favorites and some new ones we discovered while working through the Mondo.NYC lineup. While it is difficult to carry some festival spirit to the streets in New York City with its countless events and distractions, inside the venues it felt clearly that something special was going on. The Bowery Electric Map room was packed for a line-up of expressive performers, such as the Good Night Darlings or åMBé and at Pianos exciting bands like Holy Golden or Von Sell took the stage – the latter with his first show after long forced break.

PHOTOS: glamglare presents: Ekurtis, Hopper Race, Birch, åMBe
Electronic music by new artists was the focus of our May showcase. Singer/producer turned ballet dancer Ekurtis opened the night with his catchy elegant pop songs. He then stayed on stage to play guitar for Hopper Race who adds big, Broadway-style vocals to dark electronic textures. We will surly hear more from both musicians.
Next up was Birch a Brooklyn electronic duo fronted by Michelle Birsky. Their bright melodic music contrasts with the serious social topics Michelle wants to bring across. Birch are releasing their new EP “Not Human” today, so give it a listen on Apple Music or Spotify.
Last act was åMBe aka Maria Brodskaya, who celebrated the release of her EP “Enemy of the People” (Apple Music | Spotify) that night. Her music is big and cinematic with classical influences and we are happy to report that it looks and sounds as good live as recorded. Catch her tonight at Pianos!

SONG PICK: åMBe - Of Your Crimes (Video)
“Of Your Crimes” by Brooklyn musician åMBe is not the theme song of the next James Bond movie, but it should be – maybe this would breathe new life into the aging franchise. Maria Brodskaya, the woman behind åMBe, is an accomplished classically trained musician, who today released the EP “Enemy of the People” (Apple Music | Spotify) with seven eclectic and futuristic tracks, perhaps comparable to what Kate Bush would have done if she had time-traveled 40 years into the future. Maria in her own words:
“Enemy Of The People” is the most-myself that I could be and that I’ve even been. With no limits and no regrets.
