just wanted to say, I’m very touched to see someone on this corner of the internet being charitable to the “I don’t want chemicals in my food” people, and discussing what they’re actually saying rather than being an insufferable reddit-pedant about it. your response was very interesting and educational.
And, even if it hadn’t been, I think I still would’ve been impressed. “here’s why lots of industrial byproducts in your food are good actually” would be wrong, but would at least be engagement with the substance.
as a vaguely related aside, Native American fat intake mostly came from fish, nuts, seeds, and ungulates. Pecans are native to NA, and were a serious food source for some tribes, sunflowers were available, and some other oilier seed crops. Bison obviously have a solid amount of tallow, but even deer have some, especially when you consider that they were eating the organs. Basically anywhere in the contiguous 48 states you have easy access to fish or to bison, along with nuts/seeds.
I’ve heard it claimed that people used to hunt and eat black bears, but idk how frequently that happened and how much it was for food versus ceremonial/trophy purposes, or for the pelts. Obviously the rest of the bear probably got eaten, but it can’t have been a frequent source
I think I am probably extending more charity than is warranted - when I make up an ideal natural-foods advocate in my mind, they have a lot of great points that I basically never hear from actual natural-foods advocates.
But I mean. Every movement has idiots - I only see the dumb takes that go viral on twitter, that doesn't mean everybody is dumb.

Year-End Poll #70: 2019
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Lil Nas X, Post Malone and Swae Lee, Halsey, Billie Eilish, Post Malone, Marshmello, Ariana Grande, Khalid, Travis Scott, Jonas Brothers. End description]
More information about this blog here
And here we are with the final full decade featured on this blog. All throughout the 2010's retrospectives, we have been focusing a lot on how streaming and internet culture in general is shaping pop music. Now, that can be seen more than ever. Especially with the number one song this year, Lil Nas X's Old Town Road -- one of the first viral TikTok songs we'll be seeing. Old Town Road isn't just notable for how it took off through meme culture or how TikTok would soon come to be one of the main forces behind pop success, but the track was also controversial for how it blurred the lines between genres. Not through aesthetic or sound (which is nothing new), but through marketing. After reaching number nineteen on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the magazine disqualified the song from counting as the genre. It should be mentioned that country circles have a history of drawing clear lines around what counts as their genre. There was a time when many country music tastemakers considered artists like Johnny Cash or John Denver to be too rock or pop for country. In fact during the 1975 CMAs, Charlie Rich burned John Denver's card after announcing him as the winner. And if it even needs to be said, this tension is even more noticeable when you factor race into the mix. Especially when you factor in how country being classified as a "white" genre was a marketing strategy less than a hundred years ago. Here's an article that went more in depth on the issue in response to the Old Town Road debate.
“Determining which chart a song lives on is an ongoing process that depends on a number of factors, most notably the song’s musical composition, but also how the song is marketed and promoted, the musical history of the artist, airplay the song receives, and how the song is platformed on streaming services.” - a representative from Billboard for Rolling Stone
Obviously, this is a lot of discourse and debate to drop onto a short TikTok meme song. But since this blog is essentially about how music is marketed, I couldn't not bring it up. Because Old Town Road wasn't controversial just because it was a song that used both country and rap influences (country had been incorporating more hip-hop production into their sound all decade), but it was largely controversial because Lil Nas X wasn't a country artist. This is a concept I touched on briefly during the rise of nu metal, but the definition of a genre can change depending on whether you're evaluating the sound as music or as marketing. And if you're in the world of marketing, the definition of "country music" is "music performed by country artists within the country music industry". But with the internet making it more possible than ever for people outside the industry to gain pop success, the lines are allowed to become even more blurred.
Unlike the start of the decade, the pop music now is much more low-key and moody. The popularity of trap lends well to a darker sound, and even pop tracks like Billie Eilish's Bad Guy and Ariana Grande's 7 Rings are taking influence from this production style. Lo-fi music and "bedroom pop" are now becoming the go-to sound. More production styles that encourage more individual, introspective listening. Music that sounds like it could have been produced by one person in their bedroom. And maybe the timing was just right. Because soon, most people would have to make their music out of their bedrooms.
See you all in 2020.

100 SLEEP TOKEN
The Summoning
(TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN, 2023)
The meteoric rise of Sleep Token caught us all by surprise. At the start of 2023, the mysterious masked band were one of the metal underground's buzziest names. Led by enigmatic vocalist Vessel, they were a band to watch, for sure, but firmly attracted the niche passion of a cult following.
Then came the song that would change everything. On consecutive days in early January, the band released two singles from their third album, Take Me Back To Eden: the burning, crashing Chokehold, followed by The Summoning – and it was the latter track that would turn them into an Earth-conquering, expectation-shattering phenomenon.
Então veio a música que mudaria tudo. Em dias consecutivos no início de janeiro, a banda lançou dois singles de seu terceiro álbum, Take Me Back To Eden: o ardente e estrondoso Chokehold, seguido por The Summoning – e foi esta última faixa que os transformaria em um fenômeno avassalador e quebrador de expectativas.
Veering between depraved tech metal, soulful vocals and shimmering electronics, an enormous, hymnal chorus gave way to an Earth-shifting breakdown and screams. In intricate and groove-heavy, The Summoning was more like three songs seamlessly crafted into one genre-fluid modern masterpiece. And it’s still hard to turn out to play: a bending, first-trap, funk outro that went viral on TikTok, turning the internet into a lusty puddle. Suddenly, Sleep Token were the most talked-about band on the planet.
“THERE ARE HINTS OF EARLY SLIPKNOT THERE” Corey Taylor
“HÁ TRAÇOS DO INÍCIO DO SLIPKNOT ALI”
Corey Taylor
“It took me three listens of [The Summoning] to realise that when they do that whole psychedelic section at the end, that it’s actually the same chorus as it was before, only in a completely different way.” Evanescence’s Amy Lee told Revolver. “And I love it even more for that. I thought they just went a whole new direction and wrote a new part, and then I was like, ‘Wait, that’s the same… but not at all.’”
Amy Lee, do Evanescence, disse à Revolver.
Sleep Token weren’t the most obvious choice for a commercial breakthrough. The success of The Summoning, an unconventional, seven-minute, brutal shapeshifter, bucks just about every music industry trend there is.
“It’s going to do a lot of different places, and I think there isn’t any other band out there right now that’s able to do that,” Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford said earlier this year.
The Summoning set a chain reaction in motion that was unprecedented in modern metal. In just a few weeks, the band saw their Spotify figures jump from the thousands into the millions. To date, the track has been streamed more than 110 million times on Spotify and 19 million on YouTube. On release, Take Me Back To Eden went straight in at No.3 in the UK and was the most streamed metal album of 2023. When the band announced a show at Wembley Arena, it sold out in 10 minutes. Earlier this year, they left the metal-heavy roster of Spinefarm Records for RCA, the home of mainstream megastars Justin Timberlake and rapper Doja Cat.
No lançamento, Take Me Back To Eden estreou direto no número 3 no Reino Unido e foi o álbum de metal mais transmitido de 2023.
“In heavy music, or even in just rock, even in the last decade or 15 years, there’s so few stories of bands ever breaking through,” says Health bassist and producer, John Famiglietti, who supported the band at Wembley and sees Sleep Token’s success as proof metal still can resonate on a massive scale. “This is one of the few times I’ve seen a band go from a fucking club to an arena in six months. And I don’t know the last time that happened.”
It’s worth pointing out that in the social media era where celebrities and artists are more accessible than ever, Sleep Token have achieved all of this on their own terms. To date they’ve barely done any press, while their masked mystique is all part of the allure. Last year, fans reacted with outrage when bassist III’s identity and birth certificate were allegedly leaked online, seemingly leading to a decision to wipe the band’s Instagram.
“There are hints of early Slipknot there” Knot vocalist Corey Taylor told The Allison Hagendorf Show in 2023, thinking back to the early internet days before Slipknot removed their masks. “At first, if we were masked, you just got nothing. This is what you get, you figure it out. We’ll let the music speak for ourselves.’”
Already, Sleep Token are being mentioned in the same breath as potential future Download headliners Ghost, Gojira and Architects. The only difference? Sleep Token have managed to ascend to the arena level those bands are in a fraction of the time. Metal needs new superstars who will push things forward, innovate and keep the scene relevant – and with Sleep Token we have a band we can believe in. DL
A única diferença? DL

Going Social: How Social Media Platforms Shape Music Careers of Artists | Daniel Siegel Alonso
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, making it in the music industry meant playing gigs at every dive bar, hoping a record exec might be in the audience. Today, while talent and hard work are still essential, there's a new stage where stars are born—social media. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become the modern-day springboards for music careers, providing artists direct access to their audiences and unprecedented control over their look and sound. Daniel Siegel Alonso examines how social media is reshaping the music industry, one post at a time.
The New A&R
Siegel Alonso notes that in the pre-digital era, unknown artists used to rely on A&R (Artists and Repertoire) scouts to discover them. However, today, algorithms are doing much of that leg work. Platforms like TikTok have turned music discovery on its head. The app's For You Page (FYP) is the new A&R office, where a catchy beat or a witty lyric can go viral and propel an obscure artist into the limelight.
Take Lil Nas X, for example. His breakout hit "Old Town Road" started as a viral TikTok sensation, with users creating videos around the song's catchy hook. Before long, it was the number one song in the world, and Lil Nas X went from an internet meme to a controversial, Grammy-winning artist. In this digital age, virality is the new word of mouth, and it can make or break a music career in record time.
Building a Brand, One Post at a Time
Social media isn't just about amplifying content; it's also about building a brand. Today's artists are expected to be more than just musicians—they need to be content creators, influencers, and entrepreneurs. Platforms like Instagram and X permit artists to showcase their personalities, interact with fans, and create a brand that transcends their music.
Siegel Alonso considers how artists like Lizzo have used social media to their advantage. Lizzo's Instagram is a masterclass in branding—she posts everything from body-positive messages to behind-the-scenes glimpses of her life, all while keeping her music front and center. By being authentic and engaging, Lizzo has built a loyal fan base that's just as invested in her as a person as they are in her music. In today's music industry, a robust social media presence is often as significant as a strong vocal range.
Cutting Out the Middleman
One of social media's biggest benefits is that it allows artists to connect directly with their fans. Gone are the days when artists had to rely on record labels or PR teams to manage their public persona. Now, artists can tweet, post, or live stream whenever they want, sharing new music, announcing tours, or simply chatting with fans.
This direct engagement has led to a more personal connection between artists and their audiences. Fans feel like they know their favorite artists on a deeper level, which can translate into increased loyalty and support. For example, Billie Eilish built her career by connecting with fans on platforms like Instagram and X, sharing snippets of her songs and thoughts long before she hit the mainstream. This direct line to her audience helped her cultivate a devoted fan base ready to support her when she released her debut album.
The Power of Community
Social media has also made it easier for artists to collaborate and engage in creative challenges that keep their content fresh. TikTok has become a hotbed for musical collaborations, with artists jumping on trends, remixing each other's songs, and participating in challenges that showcase their talents.
Take the "Savage Love" remix, for instance. Initially a TikTok hit by New Zealand producer Jawsh 685, the track caught the attention of Jason Derulo, who added his own vocals and turned it into a global smash. This type of cross-pollination was only possible with social media, where artists can quickly discover and work with one another, regardless of genre or location.
The Double-Edged Sword
While social media offers incredible opportunities, it's not without its challenges. The pressure to constantly create content, maintain an online persona, and engage with fans can be overwhelming, especially for emerging artists still finding their footing. However, for those who can navigate the highs and lows, social media offers an unprecedented platform to shape their careers on their own terms.
Daniel Siegel Alonso concludes that social media is no longer just a marketing tool; it's an integral part of the music industry. Whether you're an aspiring musician or an established artist, mastering social media can be the key to success in today's fast-paced digital world.

Boletim de Anelândia: #24 - O dia do Avental (Como eu viralizei do dia para a noite)
Tumblr media
A experiência do primeiro dia
Tumblr media
A gata virou viral

List 10 songs with 10 names in the titles that I like, and then tag 10 people.
thanks to @eponymiad for the tag, this was a fun one! I specifically forbade myself from including Jolene because it is probably the no. 1 answer to this prompt but for the record it was still the first song that came to mind.
in no particular order (but these have all seen a fair amount of play on my spotify over the years):
1. Jenny by The Mountain Goats
2. Brimful of Asha by Cornershop
3. Marlon Brando by Zeynep Bastık
4. MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) by Lil Nas X
5. Django Jane by Janelle Monaé
6. Leyla Mecnun by Burak Bulut, Kurtuluş Kuş, and Mustafa Ceceli
7. Lake Marie by John Prine
8. Jackie’s Strength by Tori Amos
9. Abdo by Mashrou’ Leila
10. Athandwe (Hamba Wena). This is a viral gwijo song so idk who to credit, but I am losing my mind about this locker room video of the SA women’s football team singing it before their match with Sweden this week. If I’m understanding various translations correctly, Athandwe is the person the singer is addressing and half the internet is calling the song that, so I’m going to say it counts even if most of versions I have downloaded actually use the title Hamba Wena.
