sorry, but you can’t be part of a fandom and put out fanfic and art and other stuff, and not expect to get some feedback and criticism on it. that’s not how a fan community works.

I wasn’t going to answer this because it’s obviously a bad-faith ask. But then I decided to say fuck it, and be a little spicy.

Let’s talk about this.

90% of the criticism I get, I don’t engage with. Most of it is tags on my gifsets, especially of Nil. I get many comments about how he’s “a psychopath” and how “haha I killed him in my game” and other takes that are harmful. Usually I just block that person and move on.

A line is crossed when you come onto my blog, go into my ask, and send something that isn’t “criticism” but outright negativity.

A line is crossed when a person calls gifs “ugly” because they feature a character or ship they don’t like.

A line is crossed when a person calls art or fic “mediocre” or even “bad” just because they disagree with the characters the artist or writer is choosing to feature in it.

That isn’t “feedback.” That isn’t even “criticism.” That’s just vile behaviour.

Fanworks are for fun. I do them because I enjoy them. Do I hope others like what I put out there? Of course. I’m a human being, and I’m sensitive, and I want to be liked. Of course I care. But at the end of the day, I chose to make [thing] because I wanted to see it.

Some people are okay with constructive criticism. And in this group project I’m involved with, I am asking my team for it, because I want to improve and want to be as perfect and professional as possible. As narrative lead, I am also giving constructive feedback. None of it is intended to tear someone down: It’s to add to what is already there. I want my teammates to be proud of what they made and I want to help them make it the best it can be. And I want to be proud of what I make, and want them to help me the same way. The nature of this project demands it, and it’s what we all signed up for knowingly.

And in the fic I’m co-writing, I want feedback from my cocreators. I signed up for that too.

But when I’m sharing a ten-minute doodle, or just throwing a fic into the universe, I don’t want unsolicited concrit. Because 9 times out of 10, it’s never about, “Oh, here’s a trick for if you’re struggling with perspective!” or suggestions on how to improve. 9 times out of 10, it’s “lol mid at best.” How does that help? It doesn’t, and it was never intended to. It was only intended to harm.

When a person creates a fanworks and puts it into the universe, they are sharing a bit of themselves. They are being vulnerable. The least people can do is not be assholes about it.

If you don’t like something, then it wasn’t made for you. Just ignore it and move on, and don’t ruin anyone else’s day in the process. That is how fan community works.

Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ almighty. What am I even looking at? I'm pretty sure this gave me a brain bleed trying to read it. This is the third ask I've gotten trying to get me to draw this character. I'm not going to do it. Listen, I'm not trying to be mean but do me a favor and look up Edward Hyde in the tumblr search. Count how much fanart you already get of TGS vs how much you get of LXG.

Over half the results in the tag are TGS, there's nothing I can make that hasn't been done and I guarantee I don't have nearly as good a grasp on that version of the character as someone who is actually a fan. Go seek out an artist who has a genuine passion for that version of the character and I promise you'll get something with a lot more heart and inspiration than I can give it. LXG may be an obscure mediocre mid 2000's flick but I liked it for what it was, enough that drawing that version of Jekyll was fun and interesting. I actually stopped to watch the movie again after not having touched it for a decade just to treat myself to a little nostalgia trip. This may be hard for you grasp but when I draw doodles for anon it's because it's something I LIKE and want to do. Not something you can just demand and expect me to roll over. I'm not just saying this for myself, because I'm worried you're going around to other artists and pulling this with them. Please take no for an answer and accept that not everyone likes what you like.

this post has been in my likes for a while and i kept meaning to reblog it but i was having a hard time finding the words to express what i wanted to say

anyway this letter has actually been making me tear up for weeks now bc like. ok. this is gonna take a sec to explain:

so ive been active in the ofmd fandom since like april 2022 and while the majority of the content on here is reblogs, i also have been pretty regularly posting original stuff since like june or july 2022, primarily metas and shitposts.

but i’m definitely not posting as much as i used to (i think fall 2022 was my most prolific posting period) bc my life circumstances have changed and i dont have as much free time and energy as i did a year ago. and this is a good thing for me! im very happy with how my life is going rn! but i do miss getting to dedicate more of my time to thinking and talking abt gay pirates.

more than that tho. i also consider myself a half decent writer and like a pretty mediocre artist (and i don’t say that to be self deprecating, i’m not insecure abt where my skills are at for things that are essentially silly hobbies. worrying too much abt quality takes the fun out of it for me). and i’ve posted like a handful of scribbley ofmd doodles and one chapter of an abandoned WIP that i dislike now and actually don’t want anyone to read.

and sometimes i feel kinda? guilty?? about that?? not so much abt not posting as much anymore, bc like i said, i’m busier these days and that’s a good thing. it’s more abt art and fic, especially fic bc i actually have been writing a lot of ofmd stuff it’s just all WIPs, like i have more ofmd WIP files on my google drive than i can count and absolutely none of it is worth sharing. i’ve been telling myself i’m gonna write all this ofmd fic and then i never finish anything and sometimes it feels like i’m… idk, not doing enough for the fandom??? i feel like i should be Contributing More. like it is my civic duty and i’m letting my siblings in fandom down. and no, i don’t know why i feel this way.

anyway i have always been a big fan of rambling in the tags but i often like, forget other ppl can see them (which has gotten me in trouble before lol). in my brain, talking in the tags is like talking out loud for my own benefit.

idk i’m getting really teary realizing someone actually noticed and appreciated me doing that, that even when i’m not making any content myself or not as much of the content i want to be making or i’m making less content than i used to, i’m still contributing to the fandom in some way by cheering on other creators who have more time and/or energy to create more than i do. like i said, i’m mostly talking in the tags for myself, but i’m so so glad that ppl appreciate my thoughts and i’m so glad it’s encouraging to other fans. there is a lot of talent and a lot of love in this fandom and even tho it’s uhhh Rough Sometimes im still really fuckin glad to be here with y’all <3
