Hawks Headcanons

Because I hyperfixate, and write, I have compiled a list of what Keigo/Hawks is like in my head. This is so I can reference it back and not keep changing things in the stories. I like consistency.

So, here we go, the list of head canons that I have for my beloved boy.

General

Yes, he has flown into a window. No he will not admit it.

Hawks can’t cook. He is used to microwave meals and quick meals like eggs, pancakes, bacon, ramen, spaghetti, and the like. Hence his love for chicken.

He has collapsed into bed without removing his gear more times than he would care to admit.

He is a bookworm. He loves to read. It’s one of his escapes.

His preferred genre is adventure, action, fantasy. Picture lotr, or noble knights doing good for their kingdom.

He likes to game. I would think Assassins creed, Witcher, LoZ, maybe even pokemon. He's not a hard-core gamer, but he dabbles in it.

He will zone out in a warm shower.

He loves sitting up high and looking at the stars and sky. His favorite place is the Kyushu tower.

He loves peace and quiet. It helps to calm his mind and allows him to think without outside stimuli.

His favorite pastime is allowing his mind to wander.

If he finds anything interesting or that he likes, he will research it to death.

He has RAD, depression, ADHD, hypervigilance, and hyper independence. Most of these are due to the upbringing of the commission. He also has abandonment issues. He hates leaving anything unfinished.

He DOES NOT trust people; this is due to the Commission. He always believes people are two faced. Even if people believe they are close to him, they really aren’t.

He has many layers to him. He is very complex. Most of the layers are barriers meant to keep people out and away.

He is insanely smart, despite acting oblivious.

He catches on quickly. Quick learner.

He has standards and morals, despite being morally grey.

Despite having rigorous training to control his features when emotions hit, some do slip. These micro-movements are specifically his wings and feathers. Puffing up, roosting, sharpening. These will give away his thoughts and feelings while his face is neutral. Only those close to him really notice it.

He has a mouth, and he uses it. It gets him into trouble. His wings and feathers usually get him out of it.

He will shut down and recharge after strenuous missions. This is the time when he likes to be alone and decompress, mostly sleep.

He has a soft spot for animals. He likes cats and dogs. He would love to have one day, but with his changing schedule, it would be hard to keep them. So, he sticks to the strays and the neighbors’ pets.

He would rather deal with kids than adults. Kids are much easier to deal with and honest vs adults who are shady and two-faced.

Despite being a ray of happy sunshine in public, Hawks is actually fairly quiet.

Hawks gets even quieter when tired. And it is noticeable. He doesn’t want to use the energy he has left. He also doesn’t want to say anything he would regret later. His filter is usually less during this time and he may say something that would sound mean when in reality it isn’t.

Despite being fast and quick, he is relatively patient. He doesn’t mind waiting, as long as it is for something he likes.

While praise is nice, from outsiders, it isn’t rewarding. But from someone he knows is genuine, then that is something.

Telling him thank you always makes him smile. Gratitude goes a long way with him.

He has Endeavor merch, but not as much as you think. A couple of t-shirts, a poster, and signed photo, plus a figure or two. But not a whole wall or closet filled.

Hawks is the kind of guy who is self-conscious about his wings. It has always been about his wings and what he can do, never him. He doesn’t like it when people see him and his wings or as his wings. He would rather have someone who can separate the two, and just see him as a human rather than his wings.

He sometimes uses his wings to his advantage and tries to make his personal bubble a little bigger.

His earrings are a sign of rebellion against the commission. Basically, saying you can’t control me or my body to them by doing it.

He would duck out of a massive party any chance he got. Whether it would be saying his partner was tired or phone call or whatever. He gets slightly overstimulated in large crowds, on the count of his wings picking up vibrations constantly, along with his wings also being big and not the best at keeping himself small and unnoticed.

Now for the fun random bits!

Hygiene

He smells like Marble. Beneath ozone and coffee.

He uses 3 in 1 body and shampoo when in a rush. But on days off he actually uses different soap and shampoo.

When in a hurry, he will usually shed his feathers so he can dry faster.

Hairbrush? What's that? He rarely styles his hair or brushes it. Usually one or two swipes with his hand and he's good.

Mint or spearmint toothpaste.

Quick rinse with mouthwash.

Food

He has a sweet tooth. He LOVES sweet coffee.

His go to is always chicken.

He is more of a savory kind of person.

He is a glutton when it comes to the food he loves.

Alcohol

He isn't an alcoholic. He drinks socially. He may have a beer or ale or cider every now and then, but he really doesn't drink. At parties he will have a wine or champagne. If it is a fancier party then a scotch, bourbon, or whiskey. Sometimes he will have a shot of sake.

Work and workplace

He is the kind of guy to give his employees merch as gifts. He will if he really doesn’t know what to get them.

He usually pawns new merch to try on his employees for feedback.

He does get to know his employees.

Sleep

He sleeps on his stomach or side. It is hard to sleep on his back with his wings, but he does sometimes. It is just uncomfortable. And gets wing cramps when he falls asleep with his wings bunched up.

He will sometimes shed most if not all of his feathers to sleep on his back.

His bedding is soft and fluffy. He has multiple pillows. He loves snuggling under his covers and duvet cover.

He is a pillow hugger. He loves his body pillows.

He sleeps in a loose t-shirt and boxers. Usually. He will sometimes go for sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt when it gets colder.

He is a furnace. He radiates heat.

I have more. Let me know if anyone would like the other lists.

This guy lives in my mind rent free... I do have a love/hate relationship with him.

Doing a piece for Hawks and tried to find the Commission’s logo…

Didn’t realise until now that the diamond symbol on Hawks’ costume is possibly referencing the HPSC’s logo??? It really reminded me of the HPSC’s building when I compared the two,, 👀👀

They send the children of mages born in the circle to Chantry-run orphanages (see: Wynne and Rhys), because they need to wait and see if they develop magic, too—and if not, funnel them into the Templars bc they’re better at it than people born from non-mages.

i’ve always loved and believed in alistair’s fun anti chantry propaganda line where he’s like templars don’t even need lyrium, maybe it makes their abilities stronger but mostly it’s a scam. bc i love that for him like go off. however i think this has been contradicted by other canon and like gaider said it was just done for gameplay and even claimed alistair had at one point been taking lyrium, which is annoying and canon breaking so i ignore it, but to make a fair compromise i do think it would be funny if specifically carver was also like, yeah, you don’t even need lyrium to use these powers! and the first person to find out alistair’s mother was a mage was like. wait. hang on a second. making a connection here

I wrote a giant Raven Cycle analysis

Hi! Over the last year or so I've been working on a sort of essay about various themes in the raven cycle series, and I finally finished it a few weeks ago.

1. Introduction

So here’s the thing: I love fiction almost as much as I love my friends. There’s something deeply comforting about the escapism, even if the book actually makes me want to scream and throw it on the floor (only one book has been thrown so far, I promise!).  Fiction is a healthy thing to occupy my thoughts with: headcanons! Quotes being on loop in my brain! Just fandoms!

And for me, if I am hooked on a book (series), it does not even need a good plot where a lot of things happen. In fact, I would say that my enjoyment of a book is made up of 30% plot and about 70% characters and vibes. If the characters are bland, if they do not make me feel much emotion, it likely won’t be more than 4 stars (additional info: I am way too nice rating books!). I really, really need to love the characters, to be able to relate to some aspects of them, or it just won’t become an obsession.

Since I have already started explaining that a bit, let’s look at this question: What is important to make a book special to me? 1. I need to cry reading it. 2. I have to think about it often, even weeks to months after having read it. 3. Obviously, I need to love the characters. 4. I need to be in the fandom! This can be hard with some books, but the internet is a whimsical space allowing you to find at least a small number of people who are obsessed with a work of fiction to a similar extent as you are.

Now, why am I elaborating on this so much? It’s because The Raven Cycle did all that for me. It is my favorite comfort book series at the moment, for all those aspects mentioned, but of course I cannot just leave it at that. No, I wrote a whole-ass analysis on headcanons and some of its themes. You’re welcome.

2. What even is The Raven Cycle?

The Raven Cycle is all I adore and live for (next to my friends). So, naturally, it’s a book series, specifically a four book young adult contemporary fantasy series by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The books in question are: The Raven Boys (2012), The Dream Thieves (2013), Blue Lily, Lily Blue (2014) and The Raven King (2016), and yes I will admit that the publishing dates are a bit of a red flag. There is also the very relevant follow-up series called The Dreamer Trilogy (Call Down The Hawk, Mister Impossible, Greywaren), but it’s a lot less easy to get into that here as I do not know these entire books by heart, so I’ll stick to the original tetralogy here.

To stick to red flags, the books are set in the fictional Henrietta, a rural town in non-fictional Virginia, US, in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t really say *that* much about the plot, so let me summarize that really quick, because I can do better than the official synopsis! (Or let’s pretend I can.)

Blue Sargent comes from a family of psychics, yet she does not have any powers of her own. Even worse, she is a bit of an amplifier for the others, meaning she is always somehow but never directly involved in the business. As if that isn’t enough for an identity crisis, every psychic she has ever met has told her that her kiss would kill her true love. Yikes.

But because she is that amplifier, she comes to a church watch on St. Mark’s Eve, where psychics see the spirits of those to die within the following year. It’s important business, but to her it’s really just staring into the dark. Until she does actually see a spirit: That of Gansey. Of course this is not a coincidence. No, to add to this teen’s mount of problems, there are only two reasons why a non-seer would see someone’s spirit: They are their true love, or they killed them. Or, in Blue’s case, maybe both.

The aforementioned Gansey is Henrietta’s Golden Boy, the son of politicians (read: he’s fucking loaded). He does not run with the Republicans though, he runs with dead Welsh kings, meaning he has been searching for the probably dead, presumably sleeping Welsh king Glendower (*1350; †1416; yikes) for the past like seven years. Why the fuck would he do that? Well, legend says that he will grant a wish to whoever wakes him, and our favorite PTSD-ridden guy really wants that favor.

Aiding him are fellow Aglionby students Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch and Noah Czerny, plus Henry Cheng, though only a lot later in the series, but I really did not want to leave out that menace (affectionately) here. The paths of Blue and the boys cross because of Gansey’s search for Glendower, plus the fact that Blue works at a popular pizza place, but that’s a lot less whimsical. And, well, there’s the implication that Gansey might also be her true love, but perhaps she just kills him because of his bad fashion sense, it would be justified. Anyway, in true Famous Five fashion (Ronan is the dog; I won’t elaborate, the girls that get it, get it) they are of course not the only ones searching for the king, so it’s not completely a wholesome friend bonding activity all the way through.

Be prepared for: friendship and growing up, lots of treasure hunting, family mysteries, magical forests, illegal and slightly distasteful activities (our favorite of course), but most of all, heavily queer-coded (or even canonically queer) characters. Be Gay, Do Crime.

Fuck it. Mob Psycho 100 mood. Lets add MHA because I'm still in disbelief/denial(?) of it being over in a week. And I specifically mean add Tokoyami and Hawks for this title:

"Fraud Mentors and their Ridiculously Strong Students"

Maybe a reality warping Quirk, maybe some esper/psychic in the MP100 world who knows, these idiots meet. I got 3 appointments to get to over the nect few days so we'll just spit ball some dynamics, ok? Ok. Going with...pre-Meta War and like Post S1 MP100.

Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama and Fumikage Tokoyami are the most wholesome duo/trio. Mob will look up to Tokoyami (not literally because apparently they're the same height at 5'2"), and once Dark Shadow comes out? 100% Adoration. Mob doesn't really get Tokoyami's way of speaking but they make it work. Tokoyami takes it upon himself to be a role model and Mob is dutifully listening. Until something happens, and Tokoyami has to deal with it the best way he can. Fun! Mob canonically cannot math. I headcanon that Tokoyami cannot math. They can not math together.

Hawks and Reigen. "LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE-" "TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE YOU SONUVA-" So much sass. So much bullshitting. Hawks sees right through Reigen and will throw some occultish buzzword he heard from Tokoyami just to see what bullshit Reigen says in an attempt to act like he knows wtf it is. Reigen will pull an Uno Reverse somehow and figure out Hawks isn't all that he appears. If he finds out about Hawks' Super Spy mission, he's cutting that shit out as soon as he can. Am I saying Reigen can beat the LOV through bullshit, luck, and charisma? Maybe. He'll definitely try. As much as he's a conman he's also a good man. Practically adopting psychic children like Batman. Reigen would have words with Batman. Reigen will have words with the Commission.

Reigen and Tokoyami. Good lord, is this a peek into Mob's emo phase? Did Reigen have an emo phase? He's gonna be feeding Dark Shadow any chance he gets if only to avoid getting eaten himself. Tokoyami MIGHT see through his act, depends on the circumstances. Might be a situation similar to S2 MP100. Reigen doesn't feel happy about a kid running around fighting crooks even in a super society. Kids should be kids. Reigen will pull a Mumen Rider. He may not have powers, he may not be strong, but he's the adult dammit! He'll kick a villain's ass! SELF DEFENSE RUSH!

Hawks and Mob. "Oh so he's like a less edgy more shy Tokoyami." Depending on how this crossover happens the progress to Mob's explosion will be going up steadily the more he hangs out with Hawks. Not because Hawks is actively stressing him out but because its a stressful situation and Hawks is trying his best but this kid doesn't emote and where the hell is his kid??? Soon as Mob mentions having trouble with his powers it is impromptu Quirk Counseling Time at Hawks' Agency. It doesn't really go well because its Hawks. Man probably teaches the same way Reigen does through motivational speeches when he isn't putting floaties just before shoving his poor student in the deep end of the pool.

All four of these chucklefucks together? You got a conman, an industry plant, an edgelord with a sentient shadow monster, and a psychic middle schooler. None of them can math. What could possibly go wrong?

Tas has written some of my favorite character studies. For example:

Fic: Remembering Well

Victory at Adamant came with a cost, and Solas does not want Varric to spend his first night in a world without Hawke in it without a friend.

This fic shows a beautiful reflection of Solas and his relationship with grief, and with the new world he's in--and his companions. It's really touching, and I remember reading it in the excellent fanzine Solamancy and being just gut-punched by it. Really beautiful prose, and firmly centered in Solas's head.

Fic: Tales of Fen'Harel

There are always two sides to every legend. A series of original legends about Fen'Harel.

Tas, in addition to thinking about Solas's worldview and conveying it clearly and thoughtfully, writes like a true storyteller. I love the legends and customs she's come up with for the elvhen over the years, and this small collection of legends demonstrates the skill she has weaving the canon lore with original headcanoned folklore.

Fic: Homecoming

Charter attends a Tevinter party, hoping to deny the Dread Wolf another ancient Elvhen artefact.

Tas is one of the first people I personally interacted with to really passionately encourage gen fic. She wrote me this fic in particular as part of an exchange, and I really treasure it. Now, it's a Charter & Lace Harding and Charter & Agents of Fen'Harel fic, sure -- but it's really, really good. And at the heart of it, the story Tas tells speaks to the true man beneath the mantle of Fen'Harel. This fic made me cry, and it still does.

And with that, I encourage you to check out the rest of Tas's works <3 They've written a lot over the years and have a trove to sift through, and I hope that as we experience more of DA4, it'll inspire more to come.

Thank you for your kind words!

While I don't personally think or write of Hawks as ace, I'm sure I can think of an ace!hawks very easily. I know I wrote out somewhere, in fic or meta, that Hawks likely thinks of other people as if he's seeing them through glass. A remnant of his earliest socialization being a TV screen. And that extends to how he visualizes himself (on one side of the glass) and views others - also all his shielding habits/clear fear of emotional exposure. There's a lot of both not understanding people and also not wishing to be perceived.

I bring this up because I think Hawks would, especially an ace!Hawks, be aware that sexual attraction exists, but it would be something that exists firmly on the other side of glass, and not on his side, just another thing that makes him distant and different. Especially when he is so clearly fetishized by his fans, and a large part of his stated in-canon appeal is that he's attractive and charismatic. Much like he already does in canon, it's very easy to think of him going through the motions and acting as others do to deflect anyone realizing he truly doesn't feel this stuff. I think that's a very relatable queer feeling (not just for those on the ace spectrum). Belonging, realizing the world around you isn't for you and that you never quite fit.

my favorite mha headcannons

some of these are actually headcannons or fanons

Bakugo: he's fully deaf in one ear and losing hearing in the other, he hates wearing his hearing aids but he's begun to reluctantly do so more regularly. only a couple of people know this though: deku, kirishima, mina, and denki. he started learning JSL in private, but once deku noticed a JSL workbook in the corner of his room and insisted they learn together. bkg doesn't know that kiri, mina, and denki have all secretly started learning JSL as well so that bkg doesn't have to wear his hearing aids all the time.

Deku: Deku runs a hero analysis blog under an alias. He maintains a pretty okay following and he alllllllways reblogs stuff about Hawks, All Might, and Dynamight. He loves writing meta posts on heroes and their quirks/strengths/weaknesses. He has no idea that a couple of people in class also know about his blog & he most definitely doesn't know that Kacchan knows about it. Shinsou regularly reblogs Deku's stuff onto his own blog, but has no idea it's Deku.

Shinso: Shinso and Bakugo are actually really good friends but neither of them would ever admit it to anyone. It's because Shinso is always up in the common room from the night before and Bakugo is always up at the ass crack of dawn to run. They sit in the common room together in the dark & sip their coffee together. Shinso started making Bakugo his coffee after a little while. Bakugo always complains that Shinso makes it wrong, but it's actually the best coffee Bkg has ever had.

Shoto: Shoto runs a conspiracy YouTube channel. He never shows his face and he uses a voice modulator to mask his voice. His username is @/fuckendeavor though, so pretty much everyone in Class A knows it's him. He uses Endeavor's credit card to go on shopping sprees with Deku and Ochaco on the weekends. Deku and Bakugo have been trying to teach him how to play video games since he never got to growing up. He's really bad at them.

Origins: Character Headcanons + Lore Thoughts

So, here's some added development to the AU! Of course, Mystery Kids is still happening but again, I have a lot of prompts to get through

For starters, the readers are not immediately introduced to all of the characters at once; this will be split in about 4-5 one-shots (certain characters will meet the others beforehand and then do a big meet toward the end- that is all i'm going to say for now). Part 1 is actively being worked on - ft. a cross between Danny Phantom and Miraculous Ladybug, but for now- I plan on focusing with character headcanons and some additional lore elements everyone can be privy too!

On one hand, we have Danny Phantom and Miraculous Ladybug where we have Danny Fenton, Adrien Agreste, and Marinette Dupain-Cheng - and their initial first meeting during Secret Origins

Danny Phantom / Miraculous Ladybug Headcanons

~ Out of the trio, Danny is the oldest; Adrien and Marinette are the youngest (there's a year of difference between them and Danny) [author's cut: I based this on when the respective shows came out. Danny Phantom aired in the early 2000's with Miraculous Ladybug getting released sometime in 2014/2015]

~ This isn't spoilers per se, but there's going to be a case of mistaken identity when Danny meets Adrien and Mari for the first time. The rest is spoilers, and I will leave you to try and figure it out! The only thing I'm going to say is that ghosts aren't a common thing in Paris-

~ This is set in an ambiguous timeline- the only thing I will say for certain is that Phantom Planet has yet to happen. A lot of the current canon for Miraculous Ladybug has been completely disregarded- partially because I never got past... I'd say season five? (and what I've heard about the newer seasons sounds like entering the Twilight Zone-)

~ Danny is auDHD because it just makes sense- (he has dual special interests on space and inventions; not to mention his ghostly obsession)

~ Adrien and Mari are definitely some breed of neurodivergent (autistic! Adrien, at least and I thought Mari is ADHD or something- this is canon now you can't tell me I'm wrong /lh)

~ Danny and his family end up in Paris, France during the summer due to reasons

~ so far, no identity reveals beyond the obvious have happened. For Danny, it only applies to Sam and Tucker; in Miraculous Ladybug, Mari isn't willing to share her identity with Adrien (this is done on purpose as this is still early into the character introductions)

~ this is no way a spoiler, but Adrien and Danny are so going to bond over puns and jokes- (and other reasons but shhh)

~ unresolved traumas? oh, absolutely- like on one hand, you have Danny who has definitely been going through the burner with protecting his own identity not from his enemies but his parents; Mari definitely has a savior complex and is so set on saving everyone, she barely puts herself first- and Adrien, my sweet summer child- how do I explain what this kid is going through when it comes to Gabriel fucking Agreste? (author's cut: Gabriel is not a good parent lol- I'm not doing a full meta-analysis on him but he doesn't really have Adrien's best interests at heart)

~ Adrien does try to see the best in everyone, but he is wearing down from certain things- i am not going to sugarcoat things, because this is going to a different level of mature and Adrien does try and cover how he feels

Lore Thoughts + Elements

~ As mentioned before, ghosts are not a common thing within Paris. Danny would be an outlier in the equation because this isn't something the citizens have seen before, and it might take some time for them to adjust further into the first arc of the SQ AU

~ If this somehow isn't obvious, Akuma attacks do not occur inside Amity Park (as for one thing, Hawk Moth has never once stepped foot inside the city and for another- ghosts and Kwamis do not mix, it's just not possible)

~ however, citizens from Amity Park can be Akumatized should they leave or if, say, somehow- they were brought into the city but for now, do what you will with this information. Good luck

Do you have any petpeaves regarding the M*A*S*H fandom?

lol sure i'll take the opportunity provided to express a few, ty for the ask!

Overall Mash fandom is pretty awesome imo, and I actually don't have many compared to a lot of fandoms I've been in, and the ones I do have tend to apply to most fandoms anyway lol, they're staples of fandom in general.

-- The biggest one is probably the common take that Hawkeye is insecure, self-loathing, emotionally repressed, thinks he doesn't deserve love, yadda yadda yadda. This isn't really Mash specific because the bad-self-esteem-ray hits every bottom in fandom at some point lol, but it's extra grating in Mash fandom for me because to me it feels more blatantly OOC than most versions of this.

Now to be fair to fandom there are a few scattered lines throughout the series you can take out of context to justify this take, and one bad episode that provably contradicts the rest of the show (Who Knew), but I feel like you have to stretch like a gymnast to justify it and ignore 99% of the rest of the show and Hawkeye's behaviour.

And it's boring and flattens Hawkeye to a caricature of someone else imho.

-- Generally, and again this applies to all fandoms lbr, I dislike the way a lot of people need to jump to accusations of bigotry to justify their personal preferences. One example I've seen a couple of times that's absolutely bizarre to me is the take that if Klinger gets dicked down and/or feminized in fic it's because of racist fetishization. That's Maxwell Q. Klinger, the dude who wears dresses throughout most of the show and canonically grows to genuinely enjoy it. And even if he was 100% masculine, that's what a lot of fandom does to every single dude they love ever lol, all it means is that Klinger has a fanbase, which is a good thing. imo attitudes like these help contribute to non-white characters getting less fanworks about them, and while I don't think it's prevalent enough in Mash fandom to have a negative effect, I've seen it destroy other ships featuring characters of colour.

Another example is the classic bad take that if you don't ship women in het or interpret a heterosexual relationship as doomed/not romantic/etc, it's because of misogyny lol. It's not hugely common in Mash fandom but I've seen it occasionally from BJ/Peg shippers and the very occasional Margaret enthusiast.

Oh and another example is that depicting Hawkeye as effeminate is homophobia. Again, this is Hawkeye, the dude who proudly calls himself unmanly in various ways every episode and makes 50 jokes about wanting to get fucked in the ass. Frankly it's a bigger stretch to me to assume he wouldn't easily and happily adopt actual effeminate body language/phrasing and tone if he's, say, at the bar and wants to pull a top. Or maybe even just if there are no straight people around, yk? Why not? The take that writing unmasculine men is offensive is a fandom classic and usually strikes me itself as homophobic, gender essentialist, and basically just someone's masc4masc kink masquerading as an issue.

Like to be clear there is certainly bigotry in the Mash fandom, as in every fandom, and it's worth discussing, and sometimes depending on context it can even apply in the above cases (eg if a fic about Klinger getting dicked down earnestly described him as idk exotic or something, or if people who 'feminize' male characters take it to silly extremes and start writing meta about how these men are woman-coded/victims of misogyny lol) but this ain't it chief, this is people repackaging their own pet peeves in social justice language to win perceived arguments, and it's a bad vibe.

-- This one IS fairly Mash specific lol, and to be clear it's 100% harmless and just something that makes me roll my eyes sometimes because I'm not into it myself and it strips away the things I do like about the ship: the way a lot of Hawk/BJ fans headcanon BJ as much more supportive and sensitive to Hawkeye than he actually is, by taking various things he does and assuming he does them for Hawkeye, like he's constantly aware of Hawkeye's unexpressed needs and catering to them.

Yk, he wears pink shirts for Hawkeye! He grew the moustache for Hawkeye (never mind that Hawkeye hates it)! He stole Hawkeye's joke to give Hawkeye enrichment because Hawkeye loves... being upset I guess. Joker Is Wild? All for Hawkeye because Hawkeye loves being paranoid and alienating people. (The reasoning I've actually seen is that Hawkeye loves having an excuse to throw a tantrum lol). He totally comforts Hawkeye when Hawkeye is upset, they just never show it. He is devoted to Hawkeye, he'd do anything for him, ignore the episodes where he calls him crazy and ditches him while he's facing adversity. He's Hawkeye's emotional support!

I've seen it in serious meta and casual headcanons and fic where BJ just falls into role of tender, emotionally intelligent emotional support like it's an assumed part of their dynamic despite not only never seeing that in canon, but Hawkeye actually pointing out multiple times that BJ is not very supportive.

It's also a misreading of Hawkeye who is actually the emotional support of their friendship, rather than vice versa, and tends to go hand in hand with my first pet peeve: Hawkeye as an emotionally insecure, repressed mess lol. BJ goes to him when he needs a shoulder to cry on, something consistent to the point of it being a way to manipulate Hawkeye in Picture This. Not vice versa. Hawkeye goes to Margaret or Mulcahy or Sidney. The only example I can think of where BJ provides emotional support (by which I mean listening to Hawkeye's emotional concerns and offering supportive input) to Hawkeye is the end of Comrades in Arms, and it's like the bare minimum of fulfilling the typical best friend on tv role.

(I like that BJ doesn't fulfill that role tbh! It's more interesting that way, it makes their dynamic feel more unique and intriguing.)

-- Also people who think Mash got more progressive in the later seasons. I think it demonstrates a shallow understanding of the political implications of the show. Getting rid of the character with a slur for a nickname doesn't automatically equal less racist, it's just an easy thing to point to that doesn't require much critical thought. And the growing feminist concerns go hand in hand with depicting republicans, patriots, and racist imperialistic military commanders as good people.

And to be fair I sympathize with this take, I've seen it everywhere from fandom to grumbling republicans complaining about mash getting preachier to professionally written retrospectives and academic analysis lol, so it's not like I hold fandom to higher standards. The ways Mash grows more regressive are more insidious, and the problems in the early seasons are much more obvious and in your face than in the later seasons. And there will always be some debate on whether eg rampant womanizing is worse than pro-imperialism messages, though I know what side I fall on there.

But imo it still sucks that it's such a popular opinion.

-- The emphasis on found family, especially in a 'the war brought them together' sense. Any hint of gratitude that the war let them meet people they love in fic, or whatever. This is something I can't completely blame on fandom because the show itself veered uncomfortably close to this a few times too in the later years, but yeah I'm not a fan. To me the most important aspect of Mash is the fact that they all hate it there, the war is worse than hell, they're virtually prisoners trapped in a nightmare, and any of the draftees would absolutely trade those relationships for an end to the war or just a ticket home. Their friendships are less a silver lining and more a painkiller that just barely takes the edge off. I think this vibe is clearer in the first half of the show, but that's yet another reason the first half is better and more progressive politically lol. And it doesn't disappear in the latter half either, just gets a bit more muddied.

-- This kind of goes hand in hand with the above points, but I feel like it's more of an older Mash fandom issue that I encounter when archive diving moreso than a thing currently (though I do occasionally still see it these days): fans who actively like the military stuff lol. I've read fic where dog tags are kinked on/romanticized, fic that depicts draft-dodging as bad, etc. These days it's more stuff in line with the worst parts of canon, like taking Potter at face value as a Good authority figure who deserves respect because of his military experience, but yeah. Don't like that.

I love your meta so much! Was curious if you had any hcs about what Griffith and Guts’ romantic relationship would be like? Like love languages, ways they’d enjoy spending time together/things they enjoy talking about, whether the Band of the Hawk would be in the know, if you could see them going on dates….anything, really!

Hm it's hard for me to answer questions like this lol because I'm not very creative and most of my headcanons are pretty flexible depending on the context. It's actually really hard for me to think of like, things they'd casually talk about eg lol, it's one of the main reasons I don't write much fic.

That said I like to imagine that they'd be an open secret among the Hawks, plausible deniability but lots of rumours and their closer friends know. They'd think they're subtler than they are, but they're not obvious enough for people who don't know them well to guess anything.

I don't think they'd really go on planned dates in canon, but I think they'd like to spend time together whenever they can. They'd probably enjoy sparring as a couples activity lol. I've imagined scenes where like, Griffith reads to Guts while they're in bed in Griffith's room, or the two of them just wandering around Midland together like in this official art:

Or when Griffith's a king, seeking Guts out just to relax in his company and unwind and just like, chill together in a low-stress way. Also I think Guts would be into helping Griffith brush/wash his hair, Guts seems to have a thing for Griffith's hair.

I'm not super into love languages as a thing irl, but it's an easy way to conceptualize characters/ships so for Guts and Griffith I think both have quality time and words of affirmation as their main priorities. They both desperately want to be loved and accepted for who they are rather than what they can be/do, so every reminder that they just genuinely like each other as people is important to them imo.

Fenris' Schedule?

Alright friends. I have a question. What do you all think Fenris' mornings and evenings look like when he's not with Hawke? We know he SOMETIMES drinks in the evening. We know he spends time at Hawke's place to read and probably reads at his own home. Hawke can go on missions during the day or at night. We know that Fenris sometimes does other mercenary work for coin. (At least, that is how I interpreted some of the dialogue.) So what do you all think? Does he get up early? Does he sleep in? How does he eat? What about at night? I always imagined him as someone who avoided sleep due to nightmares and being too stressed and on guard to sleep. I was thinking he'd be the type to sometimes have a night cap and just wait to pass out and sleep. Thoughts? Meta? Headcanons?

HAWK'S MENTAL HEALTH : an important meta about hawk's mental health and how i portray him. this is a very long analysis with definitions and examples from canon i draw these headcanons on, so be warned that under the read more is a lot of words. tw for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts.

basic definitions

major depressive disorder - a mental disorder characterized by a persistently depressed mood and long-term loss of pleasure or interest in life, often with other symptoms such as disturbed sleep, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and suic/idal thoughts.

generalized anxiety disorder - generalized anxiety disorder (or GAD) is marked by excessive, exaggerated anxiety and worry about everyday life events for no obvious reason. people with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder tend to always expect disaster and can’t stop worrying about various aspects of life.

panic disorder - panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms that may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress.

symptoms of depression - italics are symptoms we can see in canon.

there are many more, and everyone is different, but i wanted to focus on these in particular in regards to hawk.

given his scar is in such a noticeable place, he grew used to people staring, questioning, or (worse) laughing at him for it. he spent most of his childhood / teenage years being tormented by his peers for his scar, something he couldn’t control about himself, and that had a huge toll on him. his self esteem was shot before he even had the chance to grow into his own person. he grew up with the idea that there was something wrong with him, and like he was not worthy of much because of it.

what we can see. in canon s1 scenes, i’ve noticed he fidgets with his hands a lot. in this scene and in the scene where he’s at his first class at ck. this shows his uneasiness, and restlessness. he doesn’t feel comfortable around a lot of people, certainly not in the lunch cafeteria or in new scary situations. he also looks so tense in all of his eli scenes, hunched over, like he’s ready to flee. he doesn’t show signs of happiness often, thinks poorly of himself and assumes that people are saying the worst about him (ie. assuming yasmine is making fun of him). when he does speak, he also does so pretty slowly & softly. 

nearing the end of s1, and the entirety of s2 and s3, we can see that this boy absolutely has angry outbursts, and a bad temper. but you can see a peak into that irritable side even before, in the flashback to pre-script flip.

he raises his voice and bangs his hands against the table, showing that irritable side to him even when he’s still soft spoken eli. on top of that, in this scene he’s displaying restlessness, inability to relax, constant worrying, assuming the worst. when it comes down to it this kid doesn’t like himself or life all that much.

going further into the second and third seasons, the main thing we can see is him leaning mostly into anger and having plenty of outbursts, but a big catalyst to him slowly becoming someone he doesn’t recognize anymore is the idea that things are more threatening to cobra kai than realistically they are. demetri’s 1 star yelp review to anyone else would be a whatever sort of thing - people leave crappy yelp reviews all the time. but hawk saw that as a threat to cobra kai, which at that point in time he equated to being a direct threat to him, and he responded as though it was a huge threat. i wish they dived more into all of this canonly but there’s only 10 episodes a season, plenty of other characters that need developing, and talking about mental illness is something not a whole lot of shows dive into. 

not so much being able to see it but lining these hcs up with the sheer rage we get from hawk most of the time, i believe he tries really hard to act like he’s fine and not experiencing a lot of the above traits. even after he flips the script, that doesn’t go away. he tries so hard to be his best, and to succeed, and to support his senseis even if they’re wrong because he doesn’t believe in himself as much as he’d like everyone else to believe. and i’ve found, in my own personal experience, when you don’t want others to know you’re struggling during a particularly anxious moment, you can respond with anger. & so he does. a lot.

season 4 brings us back a little bit to who he is at his core. not entirely, he still leans a lot into anger and his confidence is a little better than it was before he became the hawk. i think we get a lot of the guilt, self blaming, and fixating on his past wrong doings from s4. he doesn’t feel good about himself or anything he’s done, and he’s coming to accept that. he shies in on himself when confronted by chris and nate. he knows he doesn’t belong there, he knows he did so much shit wrong, and he thinks about it often. and after the incident, he tells demetri he deserved it for everything he did. he also struggles to focus & concentrate with training, messing up a few times at the tournament ( and likely in training prior to ).

so as demetri pointed out, hawk struggled with nocturnal enuresis (aka, wetting the bed) past what is normal for kids. stress and anxiety can trigger this, and he was under plenty of that throughout elementary, middle, and most of high school. he struggled on & off with the bed wetting until about halfway through 7th grade, and at that point it’s humiliating. this was probably the worst thing dem could have told everyone. he lingers on that for a long time, and starts to linger on it again after this party. 

symptoms of panic disorder

heart palpitations, a pounding heartbeat, or an accelerated heart rate

sweating

trembling or shaking

sensations of shortness of breath, smothering, or choking

feelings of impending doom

feelings of being out of control

i drew this inspo from 3 particular moments, and maybe they could be explained as either being a result of anger or because 2 of them are in the middle of fights, but jacob is a very expressive actor and so i think his face says a lot.

these scenes always kind of get me like. wow. because he’s breathing so heavy, and you can almost tell he’s shaking, and feeling overwhelmed. it gives me the feeling that he’s experienced panic attacks before, especially given what he went through every day for years. they were worse before he changed his image, though they were still present after the fact. he has especially bad panic attacks after the serious moments he gets himself wrapped up in (the school fight / miguel’s injury, the night of breaking demetri’s arm, the house party and deciding to leave cobra kai, after the hair cut incident). they sometimes come on randomly and unexpected. they can be caused by chronic stress, which has been a constant in his life before and after becoming hawk.

what we don’t see. these are things in my own personal interpretation hawk experiences that we don’t get indication of by canon per se but that i take based on everything above.

he has parents who care, and who also helicopter parented up until he flipped the script. they did have him go to therapy for a while throughout middle school. he stopped going before starting high school by his own choice (a good one? no. but he didn’t feel like it was helping).

he often has a hard time sleeping.

he gets headaches a lot

when things get particularly difficult in his life / the karate war, he finds his appetite is lacking.

sometimes he just can’t focus or concentrate because of the weight of everything he’s feeling now, which can make training a real bitch.

he had occasional suicidal thoughts during his pre-teen / early teenage years. he felt like nothing would get better, and like it would be the best option for him. he never attempted, but those thoughts lingered. he doesn’t think them as often having more people in his life, and more of a purpose.

post s4 timeline, he is going back to therapy to deal with everything he tried to pretend wasn’t there. he realizes it’s gotten bad and wants to take care of it.

I have been into Dragon Age lately and am trying to revive my blog as I play through DA2. I've arrived at Act III. As much as I dread it ending, I'm also excited, and will probably continue on to DAI shortly thereafter.

I already have a handful of mutuals, but I'm not really sure if many of you are still active out there. I plan to reach out to a few people I've personally interacted with in the past, but in the meantime, I would like to make some friends with people of like-mind.

As mentioned, I haven't played DAI yet, but I know general spoilers up to that point. I'll cross the DAV bridge when I come to it, and I'm not scared of spoilers.

As a person/blogger, I tend to be a both-sides-er, so I might engage with both positive and negative posts, about characters or story or meta conditions or whatever, but if something is likely to be divisive, I try to tag it, and I try not to dwell on things I dislike or feel sad about often.

Here is some stuff about my playthroughs and the ships I like to spin around in my mind:

Dragon Age Origins. My first/primary Warden is Rosamunde Cousland. In the technically permissible playthrough, her love interest is Alistair, and they take on ruling Ferelden together. However, in my headcanon worldstate, this eventually becomes a polycule with Morrigan, post-Witch Hunt, no matter how I must deviate from canon possibilities to get it.

I also ship my best friend's male Amell Warden with Zevran and her female Tabris with Leliana, but I'm generally cool with Whatever.

I'm really into the Awakening group, and I ship Anders/Nathaniel or Nathaniel/Velanna. If my Warden wasn't already taken for a poly triad, I'd consider him for her, too.

Dragon Age 2. My Hawke is sort of a shared creation between myself and my best friend. We've both played as him, so it feels like he's "ours." He is a Purple Mage Hawke, largely based on the default character model but with darker skin. You can see my steam screenshots and other posts for what I mean. (It's nice; he's handsome.) My Hawke's most canon love interest is Fenris, and I rarely am this OTP about anything, but this particular Hawke, I feel, can only be with Fenris. However, I am deeply into multishipping in DA2 era and among the Kirkwall crew.

Here are some examples: I like to read some interpretations of Hawke/Varric, though I appreciate their platonic bond in canon. Isabela/Carver. Isabela/Merrill. Isabela/Anders (though I think it's a toxic disaster, I want to play with it badly). Red Non-Mage Hawke/Anders? I think. And I love all their friendships and even the ones who don't get along. The fact that they each have their own unique relationship makes me get all happy and whimsical.

I have not yet played DAI, but I am interested in a male-Inq/Dorian and a Solavellan run-through in turn (not sure which order yet).

And I don't know anything about DAV yet beyond its existence, but I'll get there one day.
