I think that despite aaaaaaall the very obvious problems about the whole Tuskens plot in AOTC (that also come from IRL bias); something people seem to be hung at is about Padmé's romance being unbelieveable after Anakin confesses the massacre to her; and like I can understand why, since not everyone thinks too hard about her character, but I do, and it's just kind of annoying to have most people saying it was character assasination for and that she shouldn't have known about the fact. BUT! I think it shows quite a lot of deepness and the dynamic about their relationship.

Is a very, very morally gray moment of Padmé, I would say is one of the most charged moments for her, her response is "To be angry is to be human"; Padmé had been, since she was presented, going through ungodly amounts of stress, her people was dying and being taken to camps when she was 14, at the start of AOTC one of her handmaids died in front of her eyes, and through none of these moments she has been able to express much more than some veiled, some composed, some acceptable, anger, I don't believe this to be coincidencce.

Padmé pretty much represents the justice and the good ideals of the Republic, she's pretty much a source of light in the story; this isn't to say she can't do wrong, or that she isn't flawed. She's giving Anakin a chance to do better, even though isn't within her right to decide so, but she's also kind of the only character that does seem to understand Anakin the best, almost beat for beat and she knows he's coming from a very very bad place, with a terrible childhood, she knows how he was when he was nine, she knows of her past.

She isn't oblivious or naive about how terrible Anakin's actiones were, she's just aware of his reasons, she's just able to sympathize with him, she's able to see he feels inmense guilt, and she also is sure he can still be able to do better (and he did! As an audience we know he was capable of much better and of being a force of good very needed. His fall doesn't undo the fact Anakin did went through great lengths to help others) Her reaction, honestly, just puts her in league with Luke imo. "Hey, that's terrible, awful, beyond , but you know, I still love you, because you're still a person I care about. You can do better."

But it also shows how her love is, in many ways, similar to Anakin's, in the sense that's very encompasing, very loyal, very "Follow you to hell and back", she's able to offer him the sympathy and the belief of his ultimate good nature that she wouldn't offer to others (she fell in love with him before going to Tatooine). It can be see as hypocritical, but she's also kind of right, she's proven right. She's still shocked and heartbroken in ROTS because the situation was much more different, because there wasn't any reason for her to believe he would commit something like that again after he clearly expresses so much guilt and trauma over it.

And, when it comens to the relationship with Anakin, I think it makes some senses; it means there is honestity between them, he confessed to her one of the most evil deeds he had commited yet, there's something about it that makes all of Anakin's others relationships different: Obi-Wan and Ahsoka didn't know about this In Anakin's POV, is probable that any kind of love or appreciation Obi-Wan and Ahsoka showed him came with a layer of guilt and distrust because he thinks they don't really know him, probably thinks they would hate him or think he deserves punishment.

And yeah, like, morally talking, he should've gone to jail or at least have a trial or something, but like, what exactly would that manage, or fix in your little fantasy-sci-fi movies? But you know who knew and still loved him? Padmé and Palpatine. In one had, you have Padmé who truly, does love him and believes in his ultimate capacity for goodness. On the other...

So yeah, I think knowing of what he's capable is actually a very integral part of the anidala relationship, and it does give Padmé some deepness you wouldn't usually see in other female characters, and the narrative does tell you she was kind of right.

Because, if I'm honest with you, Padmé and Anakin marrying with Anakin keeping the secret of murdering a whole village, wouldn't do it for me, would actually make me not like or not care for the relationship at all, at least not in their 'romance' sense, because it would be just kind of a Blue Beard, kind of your average "Woman finds out Her Wonderful husband/boyfriend is secretly a Serial Murdered and keeps it hidden for her". That, and also that Anakin is actually very honest, maybe a bit too honest for his own good, when it comes to Padmé and Palpatine, he spills at the edges all the time.

It's meaningful, for them both, that they met each other when they were under extremelly bad circumstances, she knew him as a literal child slave that risked his life to save strangers, and he knew her first as a servant, a handmaid, and then as a queen. And then she knows of his crimes, and he knows he can be fully honest with her, and now he knows how she felt about being a queen, about being a politician, things she never says to anyone else. They're kinda in equal footing and that's why it's meaningfull, as inmoral and messy and kinda selfish it can be.

But yeah, yeah, I ramble a lot, sorry this is very very messy and idk kind of badly written i just wrote as it came to me,I was sleepy and saw yet another youtuber trying to explain why padmé's character was assasinated or something. Because when it comes to her is a flaw and her being irrational, but when it comes to Luke is all encompassing goodness and proof of undying love, siiigh.

Having some thoughts on Obi-Wan and his fandom perception rn. Specifically about some of the more involved discussion here on Tumblr. And I'm not gonna lie! "He wouldn't fucking say that" and "he wouldn't fucking do that" are starting to feel the same as the dreaded "oh, the curtains are just blue" post to me.

Obi-Wan is such a static character in the Prequels and the potential impact of that on his reception here is REALLY interesting. His decisive character development happens (mostly) offscreen between Qui-Gon's death and Anakin's knighting. And after that... well. Obviously the war didn't leave him unscathed, but imo if Maul's rise and Satine's death had happened in S1 of TCW, he would have acted and reacted pretty much the same way he did in S5. He just doesn't change very much between AotC and RotS.

And I think this is part of why some people get really damn rude about his "darker" depictions in fanwork. No matter what canon throws at him, he stays in the Light. He barely even falters. So if a fan writes his fall to the Dark, that's just inherently seen as ooc, no matter what the fanfic's context might be. Most Sith/Dark/Separatist Obi-Wan fanworks are set in the Clone Wars era, and because TCW Obi-Wan is a stranger to significant development, any work trying to move his allegiance has to automatically be a stranger to his "canon character", too. Discussions on how to "correctly" write him get oddly aggressive and condescending and often miss the point of fanfiction, or even the point of telling a story at all. It's something I see over and over again and it's probably something I've contributed to as well. Maybe I'm even doing it now. Idk.

Moral if the story is: let this man be changed. "He wouldn't do this in canon" doesn't have to equal ooc. Try to look at the next drawing you see of Sith!Obi-Wan with some Whimsy in your heart. That's all!

“Seems like some mediation. Sorry to interrupt, my news can wait.” He said, turning to leave.

“Now hold on just a moment, Anakin. It’s not what you think.” Obi-Wan said.

Anakin laughed. “Don’t worry master, your secret is safe with me. I think this makes us even now.”

You had no idea what he meant by that last part, but at the very least it seemed like his lips were sealed.

Yes, I do. I think that Palpatine spends probably most of the ten year gap between AOTC and ROTS working to poison Anakin against the Jedi, encouraging Anakin's belief in his own superiority, and worsening Anakin's emotional instability. When the opportunity to throw Padme back into the mix comes up, he obviously takes it and then continues to take advantage of how that relationship developed, but I don't think he's COUNTING on that as a way to turn Anakin totally dark. Palpatine doesn't work that way all the time. SOME of his plans involve thinking ten steps ahead, making plans that will be years in the making, but many of them involve just being able to switch tactics on a dime to take advantage of a situation that presents itself.

Before Padme comes back into the equation, I think the two most obvious people that Palpatine would've been planning to use would be Shmi and Obi-Wan. He's clearly trying to drive a wedge between Anakin and Obi-Wan, but he's smart enough to be able to tell how much Anakin does care about Obi-Wan and know that that's something he could use to push Anakin closer to darkness. And he DOES take advantage of what happens to Shmi. If you take the rumor about an early draft of the script for ROTS as canon, then Palpatine was actually behind the Tuskens capturing and killing Shmi, so he actually DOES use Shmi to push Anakin closer to darkness. We also see Palpatine intentionally using the war itself to push Anakin into darkness.

Padme is a really convenient tool for him to use when she comes along, but he would never have planned to use her against Anakin until he had the opportunity to throw them back in each others' paths and see what happened. He couldn't have guaranteed that Padme would actually enter into a relationship with Anakin and he has exactly nothing to do with Padme's eventual choice, she makes that bad decision all on her own.

So yes, I think Anakin would absolutely still have turned against the Jedi if Padme weren't in the picture. I don't think it would've looked EXACTLY the same, he probably would've had to use some different strategies to get Anakin to agree to join the Sith, but it would've happened. Palpatine is too good at manipulating situations to his advantage on the fly and he has his hooks too far into Anakin already by AOTC for him not to be able to ensure that result regardless of whether he could use Padme or not.

Just watched Attack of the Clones and noticed more parallels between Anakin Skywalker and Osha Aniseya.

(Long post ahead, with visuals!)

In AotC, Anakin's mother dies before she can tell him, "I love you," and Anakin descends down a path of destruction out of grief.

Osha force-chokes her father figure before he can say, "I love you," because she grieves his betrayal and the loss of her family.

Now these are very different forms of paternal love by Shmi and Sol, but I LOVE comparing and contrasting Anakin and Osha because these situations lead to different outcomes and reactions. Yet at the core, they have these strong emotions they hold inside. In the simplest form, they have both lost parents and both lost their mothers.

Both Osha and Anakin are born with the help of the Force, we know this. Anakin is born completely of the Force. Osha and Mae are born through their mother's magic augmented by the Force. Anakin didn't care for his home planet. He was born into slavery and trauma. But his mother loved him dearly. He left because he dreamt of better. To be a Jedi and return to free her too.

Osha came from a family that loved and protected her, but she longed for individuality and to explore the galaxy outside of their coven walls. Anakin finds his mother in her last moments, and the dark side takes over him. He seeks revenge and kills the Tusken camp out of rage.

Osha learns the man who raised her killed her mother. Her silent anger is simmering. She doesn't lash out the exact same way, she's in shock.

Their reactions work for both of them. Anakin had his emotions building inside of him. In his feelings of inadequacy, he tells Padme that he is used to fixing everything, but this is the one time he failed. Anakin thinks he lost his mother due to his own weakness and believes more power will prevent it in the future. However, he is also ashamed of how his anger manifests and the act he committed in the camp. Padme tells him, "To be angry is to be human." (And as I am typing this RotS is on and Palpatine tells him the same, that seeking revenge on Dooku is natural despite his unease). But because of his training, Anakin says, "I'm a Jedi. I know, I'm better than this."

Osha has power, but she doesn't realize it. Striking out at Qimir catches her off guard. Killing her master startles her to shock. She's not seeking power. Osha seeks an understanding of herself and to be understood. Just like Anakin, Osha believes she failed as a Jedi for showing her anger. For not being able to accept loss. Qimir pushes her to confront his realization, and similar to Padme, he tells her, "This anger, this pain. This is who you are."

Anakin and Osha descend to darkness in similar ways. They feel and emote in similar ways. The Jedi are not successful in teaching them how to healthily deal with their feelings. So these experiences mirror, but they are still distinct examples of Jedi that are seduced to the dark side.

To me, Anakin Skywalker and Osha Aniseya are incredibly compelling characters that are only strengthened when analyzed together. End.

One of the reasons why Anakin and Padmé were so compatible was because they didn’t just exist to be each other’s lovers. They wanted each other in all the categories within their lives. Whether that be connected to their work/duty, as friends, or as power duo, or as teammates who support each other in times of need. Their relationship goes beyond just that of husband and wife.

Whether that be in the form of a best friend, companion, ally, teammate, etc. Anakin and Padmé were so close that their love took form in every way. Hypothetically, if they had both decided not to get together, they both would still be very intertwined in their paths and involved in each other’s lives. And this would, without a doubt, be a conscious choice on both their ends.

Had Padmé or Anakin simply wanted only a wife/husband, they would’ve asked one another to leave behind their duty for the sake of their “love”, which we know they don’t do until they really wanted too like we see in ROTS. So I just wanted to take the time to discuss how close Anakin and Padmé were, they were honestly as close as Bail and Breha were, and I think it’s so slept on.

For starters, we know Anakin and Padmé immediately took a shine to one another in TPM, and became good friends after just meeting. Padmé makes mention of precious Anakin has become to her in her Episode 1 Journal, and we know from Anakin’s POV in TPM novelization that Anakin feels the same way about her.

Further along we get AOTC, and I just can’t help but notice how well Anakin and Padmé got along right away, after not seeing one another for 10 years. Padmé even makes mention of this, and how she couldn’t believe she had quickly she had opened up to Anakin despite not seeing him for a long time, she described the feeling as being at ease and feeling comfortable around him.

They already feel a connection to one another, even though they hadn’t been in contact for 10 years, it was the inevitable magnetism between them that inevitably pulls them toward each other. Later on in AOTC, after they’ve settled down in Naboo: They let loose, talk about their lives, open up about their insecurities, laugh, play, have fun on riding Shaak backs, and roll around in the grass. Once again reminding us how easy it was for the both of them to become close and feel allowed to be themselves for once.

But AOTC isn’t where it ends. Even after they marry, Anakin and Padmé remain great friends all while being husband and wife whom are madly in love with one another! Some of my favourite moments of this, is in the comics itself. (Specifically Star Wars Adventures, #5 and #12 and Halycon Legacy.) They sparred together for fun, joke and tease each other all while on duty and went on missions together when the occasion called for it! And we know they always wanted more time to spend together.

They incorporated so much of their work life into their personal lives as well, because they can’t imagine being separate from one another in those aspects of their life either. Anakin and Padmé are best at having fun while on duty. Whether it be finding time to spar for fun, have dinner together, go to the theatre and see a play, and walking hand in hand in a menagerie, observing interesting creatures. They were the best at making the most of what they had, even if it collided with their work. It takes a level of trust and dedication to be able to mix up work life with family life.

Their devotion and support to one another is part of what makes them so good for each other!

icl i fundamentally disagree with the 'oh the acolyte shows anakin could have left the order anyway actually so he's so much worse bc he had an easy way out the whole time' discussions I've been seeing, because, like. literally why is this even a topic of discussion? ok ok hang with me here, I'm doing a list.

there is literally nothing in the prequels that suggests this is ever an option for him. up until shmi's death he is happy with the order - most of the problems he expresses come specifically from his relationship with obi-wan not the jedi generally, so why would he want to leave. once shmi dies, sure I getcha. his mum died and the jedi have a significant hand in that, and then he immediately breaks the code and does a massacre. however, and some may have missed this, its a fairly small plot point, the clone wars begin. anakin is not only never characterised as the sort of guy who would back out of this conflict (esp since he was involved from the get go), but also there is literally no time between anything - aotc and rots take place over such short time spans, comparatively; we see quite literally All the events happening at once.

so why doesn't he quit in tcw/rots? again. there is a war on and he is directly involved. tcw shows him as having made personal connections with the clones, and if there's one thing about anakin that everyone should be able to agree on its that he sure has attachments. also, again, rots takes place over such a short span of time and he is fairly clearly not in the best place in like fucking any of it

it probably wouldn't even fix anything bro. anakin is not the central turning point of the war, not really. that's palpatine. with or without anakin palpatine still gets the war, and realistically if anakin leaves the order then war breaks out, he is going to turn to palpatine as one of the only people he is close to, and ergo probably falls anyway. maybe he doesn't kill the younglings but like. shit still happens, jedi still get order 66'd

No Please Understand One Busy And Isolated Woman Is Not A Full Support Network Stop It. ok so. padme isolation is something that I fully see in the films. I will not yap on about that now, but take it as read for this point (although. even if she has a great and healthy support network that is not the issue! you are still saying that padme, who has a very busy job and her own life regardless, should functionally drop everything to support anakin). a key part of support networks is that they are a network aka not one woman. look me dead in the eyes and think anakin and obi-wan (already not having a great communicative relationship) are still talking after he leaves. go on. try. realistically speaking once the war starts anakin is in an, if anything, worse position - his fatherbrothermentor is out there fighting and he cannot help, his wife is barely home, the senate is always busy, and he is so so jobless (again. here is where palpatine would swoop in...bro cannot win fr fr). and Again, One (1) Padme Should Not Be Responsible For Dealing With The Entirely Of Anakin's Issues. stop it.

so bonus not-quite point: tcw and the acolyte both explicitly say the jedi don't prep you for the outside world if you leave the order, transferable skills etc etc BUT ALSO does your ex-jedi have any records of employment? any space gcses or a-levels or space degrees? a letter of recommendation? are they actually skilled enough in say mechanics/engineering to be able to survive in a world where droids exist and clearly have a huge presence in those sectors? any any money to help them get a flat or smth (not applicable in anakin's case but worth saying anyway)?

in short. I don't think it's a fair point to make when criticising anakin. it relies on a really weird reading of the prequels that misses a) the war, b) palpatine, c) the inherent misogyny of putting the wellbeing of anakin, guy who is hanging on the same thread as my sanity after exam week, entirely in the hands of one woman, d) the lack of regard for how support networks are, in fact, networks, e) how fast everything happens in the prequels

Jedi Uncrits: ...ok....but that's not exactly canon. Sure, deleted scenes were canon in Legends but not so much in Disney canon. And plus, Lucas never cared too much for legends anyways so whatever legends stuff you bring up "don't count".

This is despite the fact that Matthew Stover LITERALLY talked with George Lucas intensively when it came to this novel, so he had significant imput over the novels. Ditto for RA Salvatore with the AOTC novelization(which also included A LOT of deleted scenes and character monologues that completely dispell the notion that "Anakin and Padme never really knew each other".

If Lucas really wanted Anidala to be inherently toxic and demonstrative of total selfishness, he was in a perfect position to tell Matthew Stover or RA Salvatore "no" when it came to these deleted scenes or the extremely tragic romantic way Anidala was framed in the ROTS novelization--hell he told Filoni "no" several times when they were making the Clone Wars. If what we are supposed to take away from Anakin's character arc is that he wanted his cake and eat it with regards to having a Jedi and a family, Lucas was in a position where he could have told Stover "don't include these scenes, they're going to make people miss the point entirely and sympathize with a relationship they aren't supposed to sympathize with".

But he didn't.

So it's clear that some of these deleted scenes were meant to be part of the story in Lucas' head or part of GL's own headcanon.

Now ask yourself this: Would George Lucas view Anakin's fatal flaw as simply not making any hard sacrifices between love and the Jedi if literally the ROTS novelization entertains the idea of him wanting to give up his position for Padme?

We also have to understand the concept of "greed", "selfishness", and "possessiveness" as stated by Lucas in Anakin's situation/fatal flaw is a failure to accept death and let people go, a belief that he is entitled to play god and conquer death(which is at the very least rooted in trauma and no one properly teaching him to accept loss, which fucked up his psyche), NOT wanting everything he can't have and damn the consequences. Jedi uncriticals understand the first part of this(even through they downplay the trauma every time to make him look as evil as possible)....but then they abuse the term of "greed" to depict Anakin as wanting literally everything and not wanting to make a choice between love and family.

anakin skywalker's relationship with the jedi order begins and ends with his mother.

the first time he meets a jedi, he's slave, and his first reaction is him saying, “no one can kill a jedi." and that means so much! because he is a slave, and even at age nine, he very explicitly knows that he nor his mother have no control over their own life or their own death. in the next breath, he asks, "have you come to free us [the slaves]?" for nine-year-old anakin, who lives and dies by his master's will and whim (and knows that very, very well), a jedi's power is intrinsically intertwined with a mastery over life and death which he has never had.

and qui-gon says no. and anakin asks him, "why else would you be here?" and that's never, ever answered to anakin's satisfaction. there must be a higher power and a higher goal, here, because up until qui-gon dispels this notion, the jedi have been the highest power anakin can conceive of. ultimately, anakin's freedom does not come from the jedi––he wins his freedom after having it gambled as valuable property—and his entrance into the jedi order comes with leaving his mother behind, his mother behind in slavery, in real and present and explicit danger. but the jedi did have the power to free his mother: anakin knows this, anakin asks this, and anakin is never answered—why didn't the jedi free the slaves?

anakin's most pivotal, most consequential meeting with the jedi order is his first meeting, and he's very much completely rejected by them, for things he can't control: his mother, his age. he is nine years old, has been freed from a lifetime of slavery maybe forty-eight hours before, and taken half-way across the galaxy with people he barely knows to meet an order he thought was myth with powers and rules he does not understand and have not been explained to him. when he is told he is afraid––of course he is.

"afraid to lose her?" yoda asks of shmi, and that line right there echoes off the great chasm that stands between anakin and the jedi order for his entire life. anakin, at such a tender age, is intimately aware that shmi is in clear and present immediate physical danger at all times. yoda is speaking hypothetically, existentially. anakin is not. anakin's fears are grounded deep in reality, of lifelong slavery, and yoda is one of the many standing before him who have the power to help and free his mother. so why not?

anakin's entire career as a jedi is founded on shmi, who told him, "don't look back," who anakin left behind as a slave, so in turn anakin tells his mother, "i'll come back and free you." but ten years later and shmi is still not free—as far as anakin knows.

it hangs over the narrative of aotc until anakin is holding his dead mother's body in his arms. by then, anakin is too late to free his mother, and it morphs: “I will learn to stop people from dying.”

it’s not a rational plan, or a reasonable goal, but it’s an understandable reaction that traces its origin directly back to anakin always having been very acutely aware that he has no control over life or death, especially since he was born as a slave. and no doubt! anakin’s skills drastically increase in the three years between aotc and rots. he goes from unceremoniously having an arm cut off by dooku to being able to relatively easily best him in a duel.

but from shmi’s death onward, every potential death of a loved one is now, in anakin’s mind, the same death played over and over. if he is running through every potential situation as a chance to re-do shmi’s death, he is the only unknown variable. as much as padmé’s death is complicated by their child’s fate hanging in the balance, it is, once again, shmi’s death.

there’s no wonder that anakin turns towards palpatine—who has manipulated and groomed him since age nine, from right when he left his mother—because yoda unknowingly recites the same lines in the script anakin has been feverishly relieving for years. yoda says: the jedi cannot help. his response was the same to padmé that is was to shmi: make peace with this, there is nothing to be done. but why? why not? why didn’t the jedi free the slaves, all those years ago? why can’t they save padmé?

the irony, of course, being that for all of the hellfire and fury anakin brings down on the order, he’s left with exactly the same as where he started. there are slaves. there is death—pointless, pointless death. shmi’s dead, padmé’s dead, his child’s dead. the republic rots away into the empire, because the empire had long before calcified in the bones of what had been a republic.

later, much later, palpatine demands the same thing from vader: i will torture your son, you will watch, and you cannot do anything—make your peace. and finally, finally, anakin shatters the cycle he and the galaxy are trapped in. he saves luke, leia lives, as anakin’s greatest triumphs, because it is the end of the old and beginning of something new. no more slaves. no more death.
