staystillgregory asked: "Cassie? Oh, holy shit...are you okay?"(Thanks for liking my inbox call! Obviously for Cassie, you pick the circumstances! :3c)
ā Gregory?? ā
[His name came out as a whimper; after all that she'd been through, being deceived and manipulated by everything under the sun with HIS voice, seeing him in person almost felt overwhelming. She had been stuck in an abandoned Pizzaplex all night, convinced that if she didn't do what HIS voice told her, then he would wind up dead. She had been cornered, chased down, tricked, and worst of all...]
[Cassie's head was so mixed-up now that she didn't know who to trust. Now that he was here, all she wanted to do was hug him and cry -- but as her new inner cynic callously reminded her, this was the voice of the boy who'd sent her tumbling down an elevator shaft. He was the reason she was currently covered in scrapes and bruises, and why she could barely walk. Now that he was here and in person, now that he was reacting to her sorry state, she couldn't help wondering if it was really him who did all those cruel things...but she also didn't know what to believe anymore.]
ā I don't understand! ā [And so she erupted, confused, frustrated, and teary-eyed. She didn't know how else to express the whirlwind of emotions she was feeling right now.] ā Where have you been!? I was worried SICK about you! I didn't know where you were, and out of nowhere, I get this message to meet you at the Pizzaplex, and -- and -- ā [Okay, and now she was sobbing so much that the flurry of her words was incomprehensible. There was just so much she wanted to say, so much she needed to question him on...but she couldn't get any of it out right now if she tried.]

Honestly i do see your point with the post about fanfiction, but on the other hand having been in fandom spaces since very young (probably too young to be honest) I've just come to absolutely distrust fanfic writers (especially on ao3 because well. I'm sure you're well aware of the culture on that site) because on multiple occasions i have been hit by random unexpected graphic (very clearly fetishistic) depictions of abuse in works that seemed pretty solid otherwise based on the summary alone; incest fans are especially egregious for including that aspect with no warning whatsoever in what seems like an otherwise interesting story about two brothers from the summary alone, so like... as much as i agree that we don't need to tag every single generally harmless detail of a story because it significantly dumbs it down and ruins the experience it's also true that whenever i have branched out and tried reading stories that seemed interesting from the summary alone and had a minimal amount of tags i ended up getting bitten by one of my biggest triggers so i feel like... i might as well just read actual published literature (which i do regularly for fun and for school) when seeking something more challenging and with unexpected elements since the culture around fanfiction is just too rancid for me to trust fic writers to tag the appropriate amount and not just deliberately hide "problematic" (=abuse fetish) elements to jumpscare people for fun. So it's like yeah you have a point but it's a bit of a conundrum since a lot of fic writers aren't actually into this to say anything constructive. I'm sorry if it's worded badly English isn't my first language and my tone sometimes doesn't come off great through text so I'm not accusing you of anything or being confrontational. Anyway i hope you have a good day o7
I get you honestly, but I purposefully didn't touch upon the toxic, abusive CULTURE around fanfic and ao3 which actively protects harmful fetishizers and real abusers too - because that's a whole other very serious conversation to be had. My post sought to discuss fanfic purely as a type of watered-down, half-premade story and how it affects the way readers interact with original fiction. I did not discuss the huge problems with illegal content being hosted on fanfic sites because to do that i would have to sit down and write for a long time with utmost concentration, which I have neither time nor will for rn.
I will however say that if my post came off as "keep reading solely fanfic, just without tags, to chaenge yourself" then i failed to express myself correctly. I absolutely meant to convey that the primary focus of every reader should be published original fiction and nonfiction, because the things you can get out of them you won't find in any fic, since the fic culture and system is already established and truthfully a 3 note post will never affect it.
However, though I too havr major triggers, I am not averse to the practice of writing fanfic. I firmly believe that there are just as many perverse individuals among writers of original stories as there are among fanfic writers - abuse fetishism isn't unique to people who write about cartoons, they just got themselves a huge website where they can publish their works for free and expose an audience to it, so the problem gapes open and very obvious. However, there are thousands of people who use writing as outlets for their sick sexual fantasies who have never touched fandom spaces - it's just that you'll more rarely stumble upon their works because it's not as easy to publish them professionally (though look at shit like a song of ice and fire... i find it just as distasteful as some third grade torture porn fic) in conclusion, I don't really think that fandom spaces breed weirdos, i think they just give them an outlet and a spotlight. I may be biased because i've been into writing character studies and alternate endings to stories i liked since i was young, i just dont elevate those so much and call them proper literature and hide behind them like annoying ao3 aunties do.

Paris Haute Couture Week S/S 2020 Plus a Little Jacquemus: Okay, Dior DID Suck (Part 1/2)
Hi to anyone reading,
Oh my god. I completely forgot there was also 2 haute couture weeks. I FEEL SO OVERWHELMED. Here I was getting all geared up for the F/W 2020 shows and suddenly itās Jean Paul Gaultierās last show and everybodyās (predictably) buzzing about the Jacquemus collection. I canāt keep up. But Haute Couture week is a lot less intense than the RTW shows so I suppose I should be enjoying this relative peace whilst I can.Ā
I remember my last post about Haute Couture week opened with me defending Maria Grazia from the wrath of the internet; if Jacquemus is social mediaās Lord and Saviour, this woman is the Antichrist. Sheās Michael Langdon minus the dramatic flair. But the thing is, I genuinely really liked the Dior collection last time. Maybe because I was newer to the discipline of scouring Vogue Runway, but the lack of originality didnāt bother me; it was still something Iād die to wear, gothic yet delicate and relevant for 2019.Ā
That being said, this time round, I have to open by doing the exact opposite and concurring: this time round, Dior was in fact, utter shit.

I feel mean saying it but...really? These were the slightly more salvageable outfits and my favourite of the bunch, and to be honest they donāt really capture the full extent of how outdated this collection was to me. I know that the concept behind the show was this idea of the divine feminine but Greek Goddess has been done SO many times. If youāre gonna go down that route, you have to bring something new, elevate it in some way. It canāt be THIS generic.
I canāt believe that in 2020 weāre really seeing plaited hairbands. The individual dresses are basic, but not so much the problem as the styling; they look like outfits I wouldāve put together back in 2012. Thatās not an exaggeration. I think even 2013 me would appreciate that you need to make things a little twisty.Ā
The colour scheme is pretty, donāt get me wrong, and I like the cowl necks-the white dresses are the highlights. I think the concept of this collection was conceived with all the best intentions. But as a designer you need to take risks and I donāt see one single risk here; there isnāt anything that wouldnāt already be sold in your local H&M. Dior is such an established brand, Maria Grazia has room to do whatever she wants. And yet it just comes across like sheās out of ideas.Ā
Youāve got to look at a designer like Ulyana Sergeenko:

When I say elevated (but still in the vein of wearable), I mean something like this. To be completely honest, I hadnāt heard of Ulyana Sergeenko until I saw shots of this show on Twitter. But what a perfect mix of kitsch and glamour. The influences are clear: Priscilla Presley, Barbie, Jackie O, Valley of the Dolls, the rich stay-at-home wife of the 60s, the Alessandra Rich/Scream Queens-esque sorority girl, Paris fucking Hilton. Itās exaggerated and itās tongue in cheek with total grounds to call it trashy-thereās a corset resembling a Benjamin Franklin, ffs-but itās all done with a wink and a nudge. And in all honesty, I just think itās beautiful. Can you imagine Frances OāSullivan (@Beautyspock on IG) in one of these looks? It would be worthy of the Rose McGowan cultural reset meme ten times over.
Everything is feline, from the very literal cat silhouettes and cat headed boa, to the makeup and the hair clips.Ā It reminds me of the last RTW Ralph and Russo show but with even more attention to detail. And look at the STAGE. If this collection were a song, itād be Disco Tits by Tove Lo. And no, Iām not just saying that because one of the dresses actually does feature a (cat shaped) disco tit. Like these are the clothes I dreamed of putting my Bratz dolls, and for null Iām sure, myself in. Absolute perfection. Plus, Iāve loved Coco Rocha since she was on The Face with Naomi Campbell; she is, after all, to thank for the iconicĀ ācheck your lipstick before you come for meā line. Girl is really the martyr for all purple lipstick lovers, cut down in her prime by a pissed-off Naomi.Ā

Onto Alexandre Vauthier, which I also really liked. An interesting yet effortless blend of the old and the new, the masculine and the feminine, if I could sum this collection up in one word, it would be cool. I know, itās not the most descriptive, but it pretty much sums up how I feel; Iām not AS gassed about it as I am about Ulyana Sergeenko or this seasonās Elie Saab (wait for it), but itās a fresh offering, even if the styles arenāt the most groundbreaking. Stand outs for me are the almost petticoat like, debutante dresses which have Elle Fanningās name written all over them.

I was hard pressed to find favourites in the ArmaniĀ PrivĆ© collection if Iām honest. Iām not saying it was awful, all I know is that it just isnāt my style. Itās all a bit TOO tailored for my liking, and kinda reminds me of the Zara pantsuits my Spanish teacher used to wear. In other words, I find it to be a bit dowdy. On a positive note, the colours, fabrics, and beading are all stunning, so I see that a lot of craftsmanship clearly went into it; I think my biggest issue is the styling and the shapes (or lack of) on show.Ā Iām very much getting a 20s, flapper vibe and whilst thatās an era that fascinates me and that I appreciate was cutting-edge at the time, Iāve yet to see it be bought into the 21st century in a way that doesnāt look stiff or costume-y.Ā

Then thereās Azzaro. At the complete opposite end of the scale to Armani, it doesnāt look expensive, which Iām sure isnāt something any designer previewing their collection at haute couture week is striving for. BUT that being said, Iād be much more likely to wear something from this collection than I would from ArmaniĀ PrivĆ©. I mean, I have no shot at ever wearing either but ya get me.Ā
Whilst Iām sure it or something similar has been done before, the mesh diamantĆ© dress is exquisite and Iām a huge fan of the stacked gem chokers and belts. The whole collection looks like something a London socialite who parties by night but (deep breath in) plays in a shitty band so fancies herself a bit of a rockstar by day would wear (exhale) and as much as that doesnāt sound like a compliment, I mean it as one. Iām talking about the kind of person youād see smoking outside a bar and thinkĀ āI wish I was them but I am potato lolā. I mean, as far as faux fur and fedoras are concerned, Iām gonna find it hard to completely slate a collection so this is pretty up my alley.

Chanel was a huge step up from their last RTW collection, imo, and probably on par with their last haute couture offering. Itās that same blend of preppy Chanel detailing (i.e the exaggerated collars, the checks and the lace) and practicality, only even more austere this time round.
Itās funny because when I looked back on original notes on this collection, before Iād even done any research into the context, I saw that one of the things Iād written wasĀ āgiving me Victorian orphanage madameā as well as āsomething something AmishāĀ and I wasnāt THAT far off base. The collection is, after all, supposed to be a tribute to the nuns who raised Coco Chanel at the beginning of the century in an Abbey-cum-orphanage. This makes me really happy; I know not everyoneās a fan of Virginie Viardās nods back to the past and the brandās origins but as a history nerd, I definitely am.Ā
Thereās also definitely a lot of things that can be translated into high street trends here: the combination of decorative white socks and black shoes is something Iāve seen making a comeback already, tulle is always a winner (I actually donāt mind it as an overlay, I think itās pretty, sue me)Ā and I have no doubt weāll be seeing these dramatic collars creeping back onto tops and jumpers throughout the year. Itās been a while since they were a thing anyway and we all know how cyclical fashion is.

Another high note for Elie Saab this haute couture season; if I was an expressive person, I probably wouldāve audibly gasped as I looked through this collection. It is SO FUCKING MAGNIFICENT. The colour scheme, the baroque prints, the floral sequinned embroidery, these are Cinderella style ballgowns taken to the next level. Elie Saab really is the definition of opulence and Iām not at all mad about it. Please, somebody put Lana Del Rey in one of these, PLEASE. Remind her how much of a princess she is and get her out of thoseĀ āsoccer momā looks.
Iām so stuck between this collection and Ulyana Sergeenko as my favourite, and the latter might just pip the other to the post, purely because of the staging and extravagance of the presentation itself.Ā

Georges Hobeika was predictably phenomenal. Like, Iām not going to lie, I am easily won over by some sequins and tulle, Iāve never claimed any different, and if you can expect that from anyone, itās this guy (ignore that phrasing making me sound like his proud mother). The colour scheme is very spring appropriate and so is the 3D flower detailing, and if thereās anything good to take from Ascot and English royal weddings, Georges Hobeika knows itās the hats.
It was another strong year for Givenchy too:

Though Claire Waight Keller is also fond of the extravagant details along the lines of feather and tulle, itās always done in a more organic way; the details are always more reminiscent of nature, something created by accident, than they are suggestive of painstaking attention to detail, the image of someone hunched over a dress beading for hours on endĀ Ć la Georges Hobeika or Elie Saab. That is not a bad thing at all; if anything, it makes Givenchy more interesting to study and gives you more to think about. Sometimes a dress takes you a bit longer to fully appreciate, but Iād say that only lends to its memorability. This yearās willowy, billowing, and at times coral-esque structures Ā remind me of something I can see being worn down an Iris Van Herpen runway, set apart by that delicate Givenchy finesse. And side not: I know this post is to talk about the clothes, not the models, but I got super excited over seeing Sora Choi and Adut Akech walk too.Ā

Guo Pei is always fun to look at. I mean, this collection is giving me half Matryoshka dolls, half Itās A Small World Christmas edition and I canāt hate on that.Ā

And then thereās Iris Van Herpen, who knocked it out of the park once again. At this point, I wouldnāt expect anything less. Every outfit looks like something that could be exhibited in the Tate Modern (I know, itās a basic opinion, but itās true: TATE MODERN IS THE BEST MUSEUM IN LONDON), or honestly, the Design Museum, just for the genius that must go into the way these dresses move. Honestly, if I can see a goddess wearing anything, itās more one of these looks than anything in the Dior collection. Like wife of Poseidon or something; I know itās not very feminist of me to not know the Greek Goddess of the seaās name but I only know who Poseidon is because I was a Percy Jackson fan back in the day so let me live.
Itās not like the whole under-the-sea theme is particularly new, Zimmerman did something similar last RTW (I think? Correct me if Iām wrong), but these constructions couldāve grown out of the sea bed themselves, which is more of an original take thanĀ āoo, blue and white and frothy hemlines!ā. Additionally, weāve got these dresses with the overlapping almost plaited fabric that are-weāre sticking with the goddess references here-fit for Persephone ruling over hell. As for theĀ Grudge-looking dress (fourth down, far left), I could be reaching, but is anyone else seeing that as a nod to the oil spills polluting our oceans? Because that would just add yet another layer to this collection.Ā
Regardless, itās all impeccable and Iām in love. Iris Van Herpen as a MET Gala theme. Make it happen.
Anyway, to end on a high note, thatās it for this post!Ā
Sorry itās such a sudden cut-off but Jean Paul Gaultier was due to be my second to last to review and due to it being the final show, thereās an onslaught of photos that would not fit with whatās already in this post. Plus, Iād rather start a post with Jacquemus then end it as I feel like thereās a lot of hype around his collections online right now soĀ 1). itāsĀ clickbait (for what, I do not know, as Iām not exactly making any money off this blog, just losing my sanity as it transpires when Tumblr accidentally terminated it earlier today and I had a minor breakdown) and 2). this Steve Buscemi meme is the most accurate representation of only 21 year old me to grace the internet:

I will aim to post part 2/2 in the next week, including JPG, as I just mentioned, the Jacquemus co-ed show, Margiela, Valentino and more, and as always, thank you for anyone who read until the end! You are an angel:-)

Taking a break from work so time to write up more of my Loki trailer thoughts since all the cool cats around here seem to be doing it :-D.
In chronological order:
1) Personally I was 'meh' about the trailer starting with the Endgame scene just because I think the Russos did a terrible job matching the tone of that scene with the tone of the original Avengers film's conclusion and I want the Loki series to feel like a continuation of Avengers. Ā Alas, the Endgame scene grates on me as feeling inauthentic to the story it's supposed to take place in. Ā But I certainly understand the practicality of needing to put it in to give the audience the context for when/how this new story with Loki is taking place.
2) But five seconds later on the other side of the wormholeā¦yay, Kate Herron fixed the tone! Ā This feels much closer in tone to when Thor and Lok depart for Asgard at the end of Avengers. Ā Excellent job Kate.
3) Was so pleasantly surprised by Owen Wilson's portrayal! Ā Very different than any of the comedic characters I strongly associate the actor's acting style with. Ā I like his character a lot with what we've been given so far. Ā It's instructive reflecting back on the potential concerns I had and that were being discussed in the fandom when we were working with scraps and rumors that we now know don't have merit: things like 'Hiddleston is only there to narrate the series' and 'How comedic in tone is this going to be if Waldron from Rick and Morty is hiring Owen Wilson?'. Ā Ah the good old days of baseless speculation.
Ā 4) I mentioned the frequently low camera position in another post -- it does a poor job of conveying how Loki carries himself, tall and straight and elegant. Ā It makes him seem more ordinary, but maybe that's the point -- equalizing him with Mobius rather than it being an Asgardian in a non-Asgardian's presence.
5) The way Loki goes from locked down and not letting any sense of what's going on his head slip to Mobius (what I feel is in-character for Loki) to suddenly being a lot more open with what he's actually feeling and having less guarded, more friendly/casual attitude toward Mobius is weird to me. Ā I think it's a cut just for the trailer and hopefully it will make more sense in context, but Hiddleston's acting here and the way he has no qualms about being physically guided out of the elevator by Mobius is one of the points where it felt more like Hiddleston playing a different character than playing Loki to me (and lacking Loki's costuming doesn't help that perception certainly). Ā Which I know is nitpicky, but I was just curious to see to what degree this would actually feel like 'fresh off of Avengers' Loki and so I'm paying close attention to what feels in and out of character for me. Ā Does Mobius say something to really throw Loki for a loop that would cause him to drop his guard like that?
6) "Glorious" -> YAASSSS that's the Loki I wanted to recognize. Ā He's back! Ā I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around how blessed I am, but we've got him back for more screen time. Ā Also, with him back in Stark Tower and the later image of post-apocalyptic Manhattan, I am super intrigued by the possibility of Loki (and me too!) experiencing different ways things could have played out on Earth, if he'd succeeded in his conquest for example.
7) Loki's going to learn about what happened in the main timeline and the choices he made in the future?! Ā That's huge! Ā Should be a fascinating character moment. Ā This bit of Loki turning away from the projector gives me a lot of hope that the writing in the show is actually going to explore, honor, and authentically run with where Loki was as a character at the end of Avengers and the context of what he experienced rather than Marvel just plopping the "general" character of Loki into a genre-fied crime thriller show basically disconnected from the events of Thor and Avengers so they can say they made a Loki show.
8) Do I like Loki in the beige detective jacket? Ā Nah, not really. Ā But I do appreciate that even with the earth costume they kept Loki's style of being completely covered up. Ā Also creates contrast with him not being in control when he's in the TVA prisoner jumpsuit that has short sleeves.
9) Thought that was Nat on Voromir at first because of the purple environment. Ā Been reading some thoughts on how that's probably not Nat, and while the theories make sense, if that's true, why would Marvel put in a shot of a character that looks so much like Nat that it would cause confusion and maybe get her fans' hopes up?
10) I agree with @delyth88ā on the D.B. Cooper scene. Ā Didn't think I'd want Loki looking like Hiddleston, but I don't mind it / it's not taking me out of the scene as I might have expected.
11) The fight choreo and edit into the twirling -- I already discussed this before, but the physicality of it is giving me human-strength!Loki vibes. Ā If instead the guy he's fighting is also super strong, wouldn't the plastic or metal disc thing between them break upon impact?Ā Also the fact that it seems implied that Loki would get hurt by jumping out of the plane w/o Heimdallās help to catch him.
12) The twirling -- is Loki legitimately, celebratorily, uninhibitedly happy? Ā I feel like we've never seen him like that since the Thor cut scene before they all made that fateful trip to Jotunheim. Ā I read a theory that the roman numerals on the building in this frame might mean he is in Pompeii the year the volcano erupts, which is interesting.
13) Loki saying "Brotherā,Ā āHeimdall", coordinating with at least Heimdall, traveling on the Bifrost -- HOPE! Ā BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, HOPE! Ā I was honestly expecting the show to make no mention of anything connected to Asgard, except maybe segueing into Thor 4 at the very end, so the fact that Loki is (indirectly) interacting with Heimdall -- calling Thor "Brother" (even if not to Thor) !!!!!!!!!!!! -- interesting! Ā
14) The idea of him being D.B. Cooper is very fun! (though I didn't know who that was in advance). Ā It's very easy to pretend that Loki is real and has been an unidentified part of our history all along.
15) I do not like the last scene with comics!Loki suddenly being brought to life. Ā In fact I had a very kneejerk dislike of it the first couple times I watched the trailer (so many watches ago :-P) because it presses a very personal button of mine, which is how the MCU is moving toward becoming more spectacle-driven and comic-book-y and therefore away from the grounded, character driven storytelling that I enjoy about the MCU. Ā I'm here for the character of Loki that I love as he is already established in the MCU, not the comics versions of the character. Ā Also, IMO the acting is out of character for MCU Loki and more goofy.
That said, I'm hopeful context will help a whole bunch here as @iamanartichokeā has said. Ā Given all the timey-wimey multiverse shenanigans, it's probably not even Avengers!Loki anyway, and I'm certainly not going to begrudge the many fans who are excited to see comics references on screen.
Overall impression? Ā Very excited, very hopeful. Ā Would I selfishly want a story that's just a direct continuation of the Avengers and hyper focused on the exact context of the character of Loki as he was in Avengers, fleshing out the off-screen bits and up-until-now only implied emotional impact of what Loki experienced between the end of Thor and the start of Avengers, digging into his relationships with the Black Order, and family, reconciling with his heritage? Ā Uhā¦duh ;-). Ā
But you have to give an audience what they need as opposed to what they think they want, and from a craft perspective, this has to be its own story. Ā The Thor and Avengers stories are their own stories, they're told, they're done, even if certain emotional threads were left hanging / implied / off-screen that we as very detail-oriented Loki fans would like to see dealt with explicitly.
But given that this was always going to be its own story, I'm very hopeful that the series has an explicit creative goal of telling a story that also does a great job with emotional continuity and exploring the fallout of Thor and Avengers and what that means for Loki's character; of honoring, picking up from, and running with Loki as a character in the context of who he was when he surrendered to the Avengers and where he goes from there.
The Marvel Studios executives could have easily decided to make an isolated story featuring Loki that general MCU fans that don't think overly deeply about the character would have been very happy with and probably it would be very successful, and I would have gladly taken that over nothing. Ā But I'm optimistic that that isn't what we're getting and that they chose to ground their story in the specific context of Loki's character. Ā We'll see!

EXplOration in Manila Pt. 2
Ā My roommates finally arrived past 1AM. I was super drained but I still managed to put on my bear nail stickers while waiting for them. The moment I opened the door we were already squealing because we havenāt seen each other since my Davao vacation on January that year. We chatted randomly and eventually dozed off. We only had a few hours to be physically prepared for a hectic day ahead.
The concert proper was still at night but we scheduled to go to the mall area at 10AM to distribute freebies under Team Jongin PH. I was wearing heels and my feet were already crying. Obviously, I am not used to it and it was a poor decision. Cafes and restaurants near the arena were banning meet-ups and large groups who were giving stuff to concertgoers because it would obstruct other costumers. What would they expect in a day like this? We respect establishments and would not go out empty-stomached. But I cannot blame them. With that, we ended up being stationed in a wing way distal to the arena.Ā
Many familiar faces were spurting inside the cafĆ©. I got to introduce to them using twitter usernames. It was hilarious. I even messed up with my other internet friends who I failed to recognize right off the bat! I felt so apologetic. Probably out of exhaustion, my sugar was depleting!Ā

Around 2PM, I had pasta and coffee as my lunch. I cannot indulge my palate that I had to share my small dish to a friend. My fight-or-flight hormone was doing its job generously that afternoon. I could not recall how much yards we had to stroll for unknown reason in and out the mall.Ā

After giving away those packed stuff, we took some pictures in front of the arena in groups. After that, we went back to the condo to freshen up and get ready to line up. With my sequence number, around 400, I was near the end of the line. Surprisingly, almost everyone in my area was from the province, particularly Bisaya. We finally realized how the provincial assistance failed us that year. Probably the worse experience I had due to the hectic announcements for the Manila leg. At that moment, a hint of regret was circling my thoughts. Was it a right decision that I did not bite that one under the table offer? I could have experienced a barricade line. I just ignored that bleak light of what-if.

Inside the arena, around 5PM, I was probably 5 or 6 lines away from the stage. It was way farther than my ElyXiOn stop but still a good and close view. There were still foreigners in our area. There was no sign of the event to start so I finally decided to listen to my feetās plea --- to sit on the floor. The VIP area was more compressed than the first day. Thus, I had to stand in no time to reserve my spot.Ā
Around 6PM, the show commenced. The intensity of Filipino EXO-Lsā heated cheer in response to the house rules was much more ear-splitting than yesterdayās. The setlist was not even rolling but one or two from our area were already dragged out, mostly foreigners. I swear, the level of security was not a joke this time!Ā

With the same pattern of Moonlight being played, it was a hint for everyone to mentally prepare. The 1st VCR played on the big led screens. The ghastly intro was beating in a rising intensity until the EXOs finally set foot on stage. By the time Tempo played, not only the lightsticks but also the phones were raised up high to shot fancams. I was so stressed I forgot how the moshpit game should be played. I had to brace myself for over 2 hours! People in the pit were starting to make waves out of pushing and eventually I had to stop my fancam during Transformer because the bouncers were barring my view when they were trying to catch another bull-headed fan pinpointed by Filipino fans.Ā
Due to the endless commotion, I was ushered to the side barricade and had the opportunity to step on the platform for a much elevated view. I was so afraid of stampede I did not dare to move an inch from my position. I anchored myself to the barricade. From there, I had a better view for Gravity which is a personal favorite. A choreography does wonder to a song!
Baekhyun came out with the backup dancers for UN Village after the 2nd VCR was shown. Undeniably, he appeared to be exhausted which was obvious when he let the fans sing most of the song at the end. The fans did not fail to par the energy of the song with its fanchant..

This was followed by the 3rd VCR then the powerful trio: 24/7, which played a huge part in my decision making of which ticket to buy. I was after Jonginās position for this song. Unlike, ElyXiOn that each member had a fix spot every time they go scatter around, EXplOration was way opposite and random. All te members were so mobile throughout. Next, the general publicās favorite, Love Shot attacked. Followed by Oh La La La.Ā
The deafening shout from the crowd was breathed out when EXO started talking for the 1st ment. They individually introduced themselves with matching hello Philippines and mabuhay greetings. Finally, Monster! This was a stage missed out last ElyXiOn. I was happy to finally witness it live. The members then scattered on the main stage for Oasis. The led screen was an art it was dancing gracefully with them. Breathtaking!
A solo stage by the leader, Junmyeon, followed. Funnily, they were now confident to rip off in an oversea show excluding Japan and China. With that, the crowd was expecting so much from Been Through. The moment Junmyeon exposed his chiseled abdominal muscles, the crowd went crazier that the shouts reached the roof the arena.Ā
Finally, a ballad song! Jongdae entered the center stage and the light bulbs were simultaneously falling like stars. He sang Lights Out too perfectly and I commend the crowd for understating the sole assignment during this stage --- to stay silent to appreciate his vocals. The lights were already reflecting towards my tears pooling in my eyes.Ā
The SeChan duo then took over the stage after the 4th VCR. They entered the scene with their bigass luggage as props. They were playing with What a Life and Closer to You. After that, the rest of the members joined with Falling for You.

A brown couch was dragged to the center stage for Wait stage. This ballad number was so heartwarming when the crowd sang along with the EXOs as if it was a duet. They appeared relaxed. Literally, feeling at home vibe in the living room.

The 2nd ment started. SeChan playfully pointed their microphones to the fan to let then sing some parts of What a Life. As expected from Phixos, we are remarkable to the group as the loudest crowd among all hosts. The rule will always be, we do not do fanchant, we sing the whole song haha! The leader then teased Baekhyun with his sexy choreo in UN Village. Baekhyun did itĀ which made Chayeol crazy for it! Randomly, Jongin danced the sexy choreo of Been Through followed by Junmyeon. Out of nowhere, the crowd cheered loudly for Jongdaeās name suggesting for him to be next in line to do the steps. He was generous enough to do both choreos while singing Lights Out lol I swear they were so chaotic! After that, Sehun did it too! Chanyeol was not getting any free pass and the crowd cheered for his name next. He was crazy that I did not already care for his self-image at that moment. He did his own version of rolling hills and the crowd had gone mad for it! He eventually went near each member to grind at them lmfao! Guess what! Except for Baekhyun!!! Jongin had a secondhand embarrassment for this guy and even threatened to punch him. To end the chaos, the leader finally introduced Power as the next song. It was so fun there were also fireworks-like effects during the break dance part which was serve by the leader, supposedly it was Kaiās part but the members cheered for Junmyeon to do it this time.Ā
At this point, I was a battery at 2% already. I almost forgot what was next in line. A Kai solo! Jongin entered the main stage with the back up dancers, he was wearing a vest with nothing underneath it and a cap! To be honest, I loved his get-up on the first day more but the experience of him much closer to me is the best! I did the fanchant, I tried religiously but his performance was jaw-dropping that I kept on losing my focus, I went silent while covering my mouth! Surprisingly, he opened the only clothing coving his upper torso that finally exposed his amazing physique! By that time, I already got unleashed, I am still sorry for that crispy FUCK on my fancam hahhahahaha!Ā
Bad dream and Damage were performed on the main sage. I actually was not able to give my full attention to it because my phone notified I was out of storage. Out of impulsivity, I deleted all of my applications thinking that it would save me until encore stage. After that, EXO danced to the legendary title tacks in a form of a medley, Growl, Overdose and Call Me Baby.Ā
The 6th VCR was a hint that it was about to end and I went emotional. The boys playfully performed Unfair and On the Snow. The latter song is nostalgic. It is vivid how Jongin was enjoying this stage, wearing a black shirt and pants with his cap placed backwards.Ā SeChan were so cute during You give me yours, I'll give you mineĀ part when Chanyeol gave the maknae a bouquet of flowers. The fans started throwing lots of stuff on stage, the floor got crowded.Ā
During the last ment, I befriended the person in front of me who is a Chanyeol-biased. We shouted in chorus Jonginās name while raising a gom banner but unfortunately he did not respond. We just kept on laughing! We tried it to Chanyeol while waving a banner of him and he waved backed to our area enthusiastically using the doll he picked on the floor. While the others were busily doing their individual messages, ChanKaiHo were so bust playing with the coiled spring, I swear they were kids!Ā
During Jongdaeās part, the audience started chanting Walang uuwi! We also did this last ElyXiOn and finally this time it was already translated back to the boys! They kept on saying that they enjoyed the night so much with the fans and shamelessly said it was way better that yesterday hahaha! I had to agree. They said that they would love to come back to the Philippines for a concert and a vacation. During Sehunās part, he secretly asked the translator how to sayĀ āWalang uuwi!ā and Sehun said it back to the crowd cutely. Finally, after a year!!!

The leader finally introduced the encore song, Smile on my Face. The confetti were starting to rain and feel our faces. The harmonization was heavenly that I almost cried. To be honest, I was sad but happy at the same time. The boys then arranged themselves on the moving platform. Until the last time, Sehun kept on saying Walang Uuwi!. They faded before my eyes, it was surreal! Thank God for letting me see them twice in a row!Ā
I looked for my friends in the pit and cried in unison! We took pictures outside the arena with some of our friends and decided to look for a place to eat. It was actually raining cats and dogs as if heavens knew how heavy my heart was that it was finally over.Ā
We went back to the condo with my packed order hahahaha I do not know what was into me that I did not touch my food. I just quenched my thirst bottoms up with a soda full of ice! I was so silent after that hahahaha.Ā
We slept around 2AM after consuming our fancams. The next day, we had breakfast in Naynayās condo. Hnnng I miss her food! After that, we parted ways with my condomates and met some of my friends also before heading to the airport.
It was raining. The weather turned my departure more melancholic that it should be. But when I reached the arrival area, I was so touched my whole family came to fetch me. Thank you for supporting me and my happiness. Thank you for allowing me to have this memory when I grow old.Ā
This is my youth.

A Season in Retrospect
So, turns out Kawhiās knee injury was significantly worse than we thought. I mean, itās not career ending (at least that we know of), but the reality is that he never was coming back to the 2021 Playoff Picture. Do I think the Clippers handled this information well? Maybe. Do I think the Clippers should do everything in their power to keep Kawhi around long-term? Probably. But do I think betting everything on Kawhi coming back to his prior form justifies selling the farm? Absolutely not.
Hereās the thing: as a Clippers fan I am absolutely happy to see Kawhi having chosen the Clippers as his team of the future two years ago. I was excited to see Paul George traded to LA and not end up in the purple & gold, a year removed from spurning the Lakers in free agency, even if it broke my heart to see SGA heading back to OKC in return. I was happy to watch them piece together a team that could legitimately combat LeBron and his then-new running mate Anthony Davis. But the season came, the Clippers looked great (especially against LA - trust me, I was there opening night in a sea of crying Laker fans) and it took a pandemic to derail everything.Ā
Now, I am not a Bubble-whiner, but was it ideal to have the Bubble be the lasting impression of what it prototypically means to traverse the grueling 82 game season and battle the best of the best? No. The Bubble had it faults, but the Clippers had every shot to win it all just like anyone else that was there. Their collapse is historic and another black mark on the Clipper name, but for me that was greatly the fault of Doc Rivers and his relentless approach at sticking to his guns and NEVER making the unconventional adjustment. Heās absolutely known for it, and the Bubble proved it. Would this have been any different if there had not been the bubble? Maybe not, but the many factors of what happened between stopped play and restarting in the Bubble had more effect than is given credit for (i.e. Montreal Harrell and the loss of his best friend, his grandmother).
This last season showed that the Clippers can be scary when everything is clicking. Yes, other teams suffered injuries throughout the season but the Clippers always appeared to be playing at a 7 with intent to turn it up to 11 when the playoffs came. But their secret weapon was the adjustments Ty Lue was willing to make. If you rewatch each series, you will see the EXACT same formula in each one. Games 1 & 2 were close losses, and by Game 3 the adjustments would kick in. Each series had a young Superstar taking the reigns and showing they were unstoppable. Stephen A. Smith talked about it after every game and even went so far to declare Donovan Mitchell theĀ āgreatest Jazz player of all timeā based on his performance against the Clippers. Then, the Clippers would put that fire out and the rest of the team would have to pick up the slack. And despite the positive depth of each team (and the universal agreement that the Clippers lacked depth), the Clippers rose to the occasion time and time again.
And when Kawhi went down, we didnāt blink. The momentum of confidence from the coaching staff gave guys like Terrance Mann & Luke Kennard the added support to produce some amazing performances. I firmly believe the Clippers could have won it all had Game 1 of the WCF had a couple calls go our way and PG hit a single Free Throw at the end of Game 2. Then some adequate rest between the WCF and the Finals might have recharged enough for a true run of the Bucks. BUT this isnāt a woulda-shoulda-coulda. Like the team, even I was exhausted by Game 6 following a marathon of games every other day for a solid 3 weeks.Ā
So itās on to the next season. A chance to let the excitement and accomplishments from this past season settle in and optimism of the future. Except we are now regularly inundated with news about Kawhi and his future with the team and what the extent of his injury might mean. And while it is probably the most unpopular opinion on the internet, Iāll be the first to say it: if Kawhi doesnāt want to be here, then he needs to go.
If Kawhi wants to be in Dallas or Miami, then let him. If his only avenue there is through a sign and trade, then get some quality in return for his loss and move on. Make more adjustments, get into the right groove, and move on.Ā
Iāve watched nearly every game of the last two seasons and Kawhi on the floor is universally the best player. But there are moments - regularly - where I am not confident that he inspires his teammates. He is known to be low-key on his attitude and that can be jarring. I want passion, emotion, excitement. I personally thrive off the energy of others and maybe thatās where seeing Kawhi on TV or from a distance at the Staples Center doesnāt always translate. But PGās energy does. Even when heās saying some dumb stuff (Playoff P...) he still seems to have the support of his teammates. Without PG we wouldnāt have kept Reggie Jackson at next-to-nothing. PG might be the reason Reggie sticks around on a reasonable contract over the loads of money another team might throw at him.
Kawhi brought us Ibaka, sure, and barring the injury might have been a really great impact on the playoffs. But itās the role players that carried us through the playoffs when Kawhi went down. And if Kawhi still had a big hand in keeping them motivated, then letās not lose him. Letās hope that matters enough for Kawhi to not only want to stick around but keep this team together.
The idea of trading away the bench in order to bring in another question-mark player is nauseating to me. If we have to lose guys like Patrick Beverly, Marcus Morris, or Terrance Mann, I donāt want to see the return be mid-level guys who need to jive in a new situation. If the return is anyone but Damian Lillard, I donāt want them. No John Wall. No Russell Westbrook. No Ben Simmons. No middle-of-the-road players that donāt truly elevate over what we have. Marcus Morris was once seen as one of these guys, and at his best still is. Why trade him unless you are absolutely certain the guy coming back is better? Pat Bev is the heart of our team, and proved that in crunch time he is still easily the most effective defensive stopper in the league. Donāt believe me, listen to comments from the Jazz series on guys not wanting to get stuck with him on them.
Yes, their contracts are high. And yes, nothing can be done without moving on from these guys. But why does anything need to be done? If thereās one for certain that needsĀ to be addressed, itās Kawhi. If he is not the leader of this team, which I would argue Paul George has more of the proven leader qualities than Kawhi has outwardly shown, and he might wantĀ to play somewhere else, then use his albatross contract and the unknown of his injury and how it affects his future as the last-ditch-effort trade chip to bring some talent back and give us the flexibility.
Would I be opposed to Kawhi-to-Dallas? Mostly, as I donāt like enough of the surrounding talent to come back as collateral. Short of getting every draft pick imaginable from Dallas, guys like Tim Hardaway, Jr. or Kristaps Porzingis donāt give me the confidence that I would want to be traceable assets or reliable otherwise. Hardaway had a great resurgence, sure, but he needs to find a way to Indiana to keep playing for Rick Carlisle. Porzingis on the other hand is still a good player, but has proven heās not worth the contract and thus untraceable to a third team so youāre stuck with him. And he does not signlehandedly replace what Kawhi brings. I like guys like Maxi Kleber, but then we have so many bigs we wouldnāt know what to do with, and trading away Zubacās to accommodate incoming bigs would be a huge mistake. I also would hate the combination of Luka & Kawhi from a competitor standpoint. If we ran into Dallas a third time in the playoffs next season, but they now have Kawhi instead, we are toast. Bottom line.
Iād send Kawhi to Miami. Mostly because he would only be our problem if they made it to the finals, and as a basketball fan Iād love to see that Miami team go head to head with the Nets for a couple seasons and see what shakes out. If Kawhi joined Jimmy Butler in Miami, the East would, in my opinion, have effectively balanced itself back out with the West. I also think the return would be better. Guys like Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn all have trade value. Get some picks in return as well and we have some quality building blocks. Or truly pull off the incredible by making this trade as a stepping stone to another one that nets the Clippers Damian Lillard.
Iāve tinkered with the NBA Trade Machine and made this work a variety of ways. Sending Ibaka to the Blazers and Kawhi to the Heat allows the Clippers to bring back not just Lillard, but potentially one of Miamiās sharpshooters or even a talent like Jones Jr. or Kanter. Sporting a lineup that includes George and Lillard without giving up guys like Morris, Zubac, Mann, or Beverly would be a huge win. Keeping Rondo for experience and leadership would be welcome though he likely wouldnāt play much, and spending the remaining resources on retaining guys like Nic Batum & Reggie Jackson would be crucial.
All in all, I would hate to see Kawhi leave a team that could have won it if the injury never happened. I would hate to see this team broken up at all. Bring back Batum, bring back Jackson. Bring back guys like Cousins or even Pat Pat (despite his effective 0 minutes played in the playoffs). Leadership and chemistry is the final piece in this already established puzzle.Ā
But if Kawhi needs to follow his own path, then I think the Clippers need to suck it up and move on.

We got episode 3 āInto the Digital Worldā! And the good news is we are still Very Much at it with the Taishiro lol
This pic pretty much sums up the whole episode for me:
ā¤ļø!
Spoilers under the cut...
So letās knock the most important thing off right away, at the end of the ep they DO go to a real digital world!
And it looks like a childās fantasy... a beautiful natural world full of amazing creatures. I have no idea how similar itās gonna be to the world we know, though! So far everythingās different, even things that seem the same. Keeps me guessing.
The landscape is pretty intriguing. Looks like a planet/moon on the horizon? And Iām sure that interesting islandās gotta mean something...
But back to the beginning.
So last week, I was all boggled because they introduced Omegamon and Jogress so early. It was easy to think that since theyād started this hype wave, they were gonna keep riding it out, especially with Hikari and Takeru seeming to receive magic feathers and all. Well, thatās not really how it goes down.
The battle is very quiet, with few words - none at all from Taichi or Yamato until Koushirou gets their attention. I am not 100% sure about this, but from the way Taichi looks to the side when an attack comes his way and Omegamon then takes it out, I think it might mean Taichi and Yamato have some mental work of their own to do to help Omegamon fight and thatās why theyāre so quiet. But thatās just a thought. I do love the idea that the kidsā ties to their Digimon have more of an affect on their ability to battle than just their evolutions.
One thing a Jogress does is make you glow. Yeah yeah, we glowed before too. No, I mean GLOW.
Like, nonstop.
Also, I have figured out that Taichi and Yamato must have suction cups on their shoes and thatās how they donāt fall off Omegamon while heās hurtling all over the place
Cue awesome rock version of the theme song battle music!! Omegamon kills nu!Diaboromon the same way he kills him in Our War Game, with a STAB. But that doesnāt stop the missile. Here I thought would be Koushirouās turn to shine, but aside from continuing to keep tabs on things, he doesnāt get to join in the fight this time.
Omegamon is somehow able to detect missiles, I guess?
And lock on to the infected one, which conveniently shows an actual lock, is red, and even has the monsterās eyeball symbol. We also see a bunch of Digi code before this.
He absorbs the powers of all the Crests into his sword (!!) ...
(notice theyāre still glowing!)
... and stabs it. Because in Digimon, stabbing is always the answer.
BOOM shakalaka
People of Tokyo: Wow thatās bright! I should probably avert my eyes or put on sunglasses. But first, to Instagram!
Thanks, Kouushirouās computer.
The missle blows up way up high and no one gets hurt. They also donāt seem to care all that much about what this is either! Seconds later everyoneās devices lose power, including Koushirouās computer. He is very distressed, but the outage doesnāt last long.
Yamato and Taichiās suction cups finally lose their grip and they fall away into a bright light...
Omegamon became a butterfly!!
It is now certain, Taichi didnāt pull a Kouichi xD Heās perfectly fine. Thatās the RIGHT way to get in and out of the digital world at a train station. Take notes, kids.
OK before we move on I must take a second to appreciate these text messages Koushirou receives from someone named Mr.Unknown (gee Iām sure weāll never hear from him again!)
OMG my life is
WHAT KIND OF REACTION IS THAT TO YOUR IMMINENT DEATH!?!?
āSomeone stop it!ā Suddenly Japanese (also from Mr.Unkown)
Twenty bucks says this guy is Gennai? Ryou? Wallace? KEN?!
no donāt bet against me please, I have no money.
Have an adorable Hikari, who didnāt get to do anything with the feather in the end. Who knows if she even really has it. She DOES seem to totally know what happened with her brother though. Takeru might know also? But Hikari definitely does. Our little oracle is back.
So Taichi is fine, Koushirou is fine, Yamato is fine. They all get back to the human world safely. Taichi and Koushirou head home, wondering if all that really happened, talking about what could happen next. More importantly, the Taishiro power returns at full throttle.
Koushirou: Do you know about this? This? This?
Taichi: Hmm... hmmm... hmmm.. thinking makes my head hurt...
(Like I rag on Taichi for not thinking but tbh heās quite the thinker and planner... maybe more so in this season than in the original.)
Gloves returned to pocket. Goggles still at the ready.
Then Taichi reaches out his hand... Koushirou stares at it like heās not quite sure what to do with it. And Taichiās like, āThank you so much, for everything, you were a huge help!ā
Koushirou: āBut I didnāt do anything.ā
Taichi: āYou helped so much by doing all that research! Youāre awesome!ā
Koushirou: :D āY-Yeah!!ā
He agrees that heās awesome!! My baby!!
They shake hands! Theyāre such good friends now!
... Then Taichi walks backwards out of the elevator with his hand still outstretched, staring at Koushirou
WHAT
WHAT THE HECK IS THIS!?!?
This show producers arenāt even TRYING to hide their bias hahaha okay thatās the Taishiro fan in me but HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO READ THIS SCENE CMON LIKE!?
So Taichiās about to go home, and at this point Iām thinking āI guess Koushirouās never gonna ask that question about camp...!ā
Then Taichi is like, āOh yeah, didnāt you have a question about camp?ā
Fricking. TAICHI.
I am absolutely stunned that itās him who brings up Koushirouās original errand xD Koushirou himself has completely forgotten about it! (Too busy basking in the glow of being called awesome about twenty times in what this episode establishes is less than an hour!)
Seriously Taichi is SUCH A DAD!? His mom comes home and tells him about her day. Hikari comes over and he pats her on the head and tells her she was brave and did a good job. All he needs is a newspaper and a tie to reach peak Dad-ness.
Hikari: āThanks big brother!ā
Taichi: ā...? For?ā
So about Yamato... on the elevator Taichi realizes he never found out where Yamato lives...
... Itās Shimane. Grandmaās house in Shimane! Well I mean, they could make it somewhere else, but the point is itās super inaka countryside. Yamato has a call with Takeru which makes it seem like they indeed donāt live together, as Takeru shyly asks Yamato if heāll come visit since itās summer break, and Yamato says he does intend to go to Tokyo and see him. Not sure yet who Yamatoās living with, if itās still his dad or he lives with his grandparents in this version, or thereās some other reason heās not in Tokyo...
Yamato also asks if Takeruās okay, and Takeru replies he was inside all day so heās fine. Thatās what makes me think Takeru knows about Yamato going to the digital world. He might not, but I like the idea that he does. My guess would be he knows because heās seen Yamato do it or something, whereas Hikari just knows because sheās psychic :P
Then guess what! WE GO TO CAMP!
Only for like, two minutes, though. That was a bummer for me. Camp is just a vehicle to introduce a couple other characters, then they go home. Well, we donāt need two of the exact same show I guess... Iāll just appreciate this as a nod to the original.
First we see Jou! Heās hancho again and trying to tell other kids how to use a knife. He immediately cuts his finger. Good ole Jou I canāt wait to have him back.
Taichi and Koushirou are walking around camp and Koushirou trips due to Jou yelling and basically throws his laptop straight into the air
Laptop: āFREEEEEDOM!ā
Mr Superior Reflexes AKA Taichi quickly grabs Koushirou and prevents him from smashing face first into the dirt. GOSH THEY JUST WILL NOT STOP WITH THE TAISHIRO. I CANNOT.
Koushirou: āH-H-Human c-c-contact?!?!?! Is this SKINSHIPā
Like yāall know this isnt my fault right? I wouldnāt have to say these things if the show didnāt make it so durn easy. Bahahahaha.
Guess who catches the laptop! Soooooraaaaa!
My girl is back! Sheās got butterflies!
Koushirou says he knows who she is because the girls in his class always talk about how sheās so cooooool!
This episode establishes that Sora is 1) popular 2) well-liked 3) responsible 4) quick-thinking 5) athletic 6) Taichiās old friend 7) coooooool in like, thirty seconds.
Taichi and Koushirou continue to spend aaaaaall their time together. My one complaint here is that all they do is talk about the digital world. And while I know itās no surprise, the one thing I always loved about old Adventure was that to a certain extent, the kids got to act like kids. Of course they had uncanny adult wisdom and ability to sit still, lol. I understand that. So far in this show, theyāre not really acting like children even a little bit. Itās all superheroing. Thatās how I feel at the moment though - the only one I expect to really act like a child is Takeru, and probably Mimi, Iād guess. I do hope we get to see a larger range of personality from all of them in the future. It is only episode three.
Koushirouās icon is a pineapple <3
So thereās a new threat but itās not as obvious as the old one. Another power outage happens but they donāt know how important it is right away. Then both Taichi and Koushirouās digivices start to glow! Taichi runs out, and here we finally got some new personality from him, something beyond friendliness and bravery: He really, really wants to see Agumon again. Heļæ½ļæ½ļæ½s already feeling the depth of that bond and itās really been weighing on him that they parted so abruptly. He has so many questions. I would say, Koushirou talked about the digital world non stop because he finds it interesting, but Taichi talked about it because he misses Agumon. (Koushirou after all hasnāt met Tentomon yet.)
Before he can run out, Taichi runs into Hikari in the living room. Sheās worried, and she clearly knows what heās up to, but all she says is āItterasshai.ā I super appreciate that the set up and lighting is the same as these scenes between the two of them in original Adventure! Itās a total throwback to that hallmark ep of Adventure, episode 21.
Unable to think about anything but seeing Agumon again, Taichi runs outside to the train station where Koushirou is (I wonder if the train station is going to become like their base point or something). He doesnāt even notice Sora, but she notices him...
... and in true Sora fashion, immediately turns around and starts chasing after Taichi without a word xD
ugh I will always hate how PINK she is in this
Sora: āTaichiās running somewhere awful fast... he has that look on his face... heās going to get into trouble ugh I just know itā
The digivices glow and both Taichi and Koushirou disappear into the digital world. As they go through the vortex, we see a bunch of colored lights...
So this one is clearly Taichi and Koushirou, and Sora as well. My guess is she gets swallowed up as a result of following Taichi.
However, over here we have Yamato, Jou, and Mimi, but why would they all be together? Yamatoās fine, but how are the other two getting in?
It doesnāt seem like Takeruās joining this time, which is interesting. But I might be wrong - only episode 4 will tell.
Taichi wakes up in the real Digital World and is finally reunited with Agumon. End episode 3 <3
Iām really curious about whatās coming next! Iām still pretty shocked that a Jogress happened so early, but Iām gonna guess now that we might not see it again for a good long while. My prediction is that Yamatoās gonna be more like the lone wolves of other seasons (Ken, Ruki, Kouji, etc) who donāt want to join the main team right away, then suddenly just do. Everyone loves a rogue hero. I am super excited for the whole team to be together though so we can see all those personality dynamics grow! I really want them to not go home for a while and have to live by their wits, but I donāt think thatās the way this show wants to go, it wants the drama of going back and forth between lives... OTOH, we now know for sure that it IS summer break, so I suppose they donāt really have a NEED to go home. Maybe weāll get a bit of both - they usually go home after, but sometimes end up on a longer stay?
I think what I need most from this show is the rest of the team before it will really feel like Digimon Adventure to me. So looking forward to episode 4!
eta: I totally forgot about the pics I took of the trailer for next week!
Look how awesome this is! This is exactly what I am hoping sticks around for a good long time! We need the partners to bond and we need to live up to the name of āAdventureā!
Since the trailer only shows Taichi and Sora, I wonder if that means everyoneās split up. Koushirouās light seemed a bit distant from the other two in that screencap up there, so maybe he lands somewhere else and they all have to find each other. Makes sense, really. Iād expected that for the other three but figured Koushirou would be with Taichi... but itāll be awesome if he has to try to get by on his own in the beginning. Also, so excited for Birdramon!
Bonus: I found a vid on youtube that claimed to have English subs and I clicked out of curiosity... this is what it wrote when Taichi says āKoushirouā:
XāD Koushirou has so many nicknames now. DJ Wiseman, Kou the Bro, Awesome, Taichiās New God, Godzilla... I love Youtube.

Essential Avengers: Avengers #219: ... BY DIVINE RIGHT!
May, 1982
I can just tell that this is going to be a Moondragontastic issue. Call it a hunch. Call it the caption that reads āBy divine right, MOONDRAGON commands!ā Or call it her enormous cosmic head lurking mastermind like over the action scene.
Who are the Avengers even beating up? Guess Iāll find out.
So previously on Avengers! ... Uh. Well Hank Pymās life imploded and he wound up in jail. Molecule Man was going to eat Earth and then Tigra told him not to sternly and he changed his mind. Tigra quit the team, alas. And there was that weird filler thing with the immortal child who pratfell into the Sun.
This time, we have a much delayed thing. Back during Shooterās first run, he had unfinished plans for Moondragon which were supposed to happen sometime after the Korvac Saga. But he had to leave the book because trying to write a title and EIC wasnāt happening.
So now here he is, trying to write a title and EIC at the same time.
Uh. Second timeās the charm?
The story starts with Janet Van Dyne, divorced and Feeling Fine, getting a āduckyā new haircut.
Yeah. It looks decent. Not much like a duck. But who can say why language does anything.
But just as sheās examining her new ādo, Janet is struck by a sudden irresistible impulse to run out the salon! Run out and flyyyyyyyy!
So not really sure why, she runs out, shrinks down, and flies away.
Unfortunately, her clothes werenāt treated with unstable molecules and the compulsion is strong enough that she shrinks out of her clothes and flies off into the snow naked.
The awkward life of being Janet Van Dyne.
When we eventually establish that of course this is Moondragon, Moondragon is going to have a lot to answer for.
Meanwhile, in Atlantic City, Tony Stark is counting cards and loudly announcing thatās what heās doing to his lady companion.
I guess when youāre rich as Tony and also have access to a ābodyguardā in a walking weapons platform, casinos donāt get so kneebreaky with you.
But just as Tony bet $50,000 at blackjack, his Tony sense are tingling. Or heās hit by the same weird compulsion as Wasp, which Iāve just noticed looks like generic store brand spider-sense in how its portrayed.
So Tony gets up and runs, telling his date that the money he has on the table and his cards are hers.
She sits down in his seat, hits on a thirteen, goes over 21 and shrugs āEasy come, easy go!ā
Meanwhile, Tony flies out of the casino as Iron Man. He muses to himself that he barely resisted changing into his armor right in front of everyone.
Oh, so I see how it is (Moondragon)! Wasp is in such a hurry that she ditches her clothes but Tony gets to put some more on? I see where your butter is breaded.
Meanwhile again, Captain America is beating up some armed robbers. One of the armed robbers is actually a huge fan.
Armed robber Stu: āSPLIT UP, GUYS! RUN! HE CANāT GET US ALL -- OOF!ā
Armed robber Squid: āStu, you jerk! Heās Captain America! Of course he can get us all! If I wasnāt a two-time loser, I wouldnāt even bother runninā!ā
But right when Cap is punching a guy, he too feels the SUDDEN COMPULSION!
He gets on his motorcycle and goes.
Leaving mixed feelings amongst the conscious armed robbers.
Armed Robber Eliot: āHah! We scared him off, Squid!ā
Armed Robber Squid: āI -- I canāt believe that! Nothinā scares Captain America! Durinā World War II, he took on a whole company of Nazis once and saved my dadās platoon from an ambush!ā
Eliot: āBig deal! That has-beenās runninā from us, isnāt he?ā
Squid: āHe aināt runninā! He probably has more important stuff to do, thatās all! And he aināt a has-been!ā
Eliot: āRight, Squid -- ! Heās a coward!ā -punched- āOW!ā
Squid: āSHADDUP, ELIOT!ā
Theyāre so busy punching each other over whether or not Cap rocks or sucks that they forget to run and are punching each other when the police arrive.
Womp womp.
But hey, people get emotional debating their favorite superheroes. It is understandable.
Meanwhile again again, Jarvis is shoveling snow at Avengers Mansion and bitterly muttering to himself that he talked Tony out of purchasing a snowblower.
Jarvis: āI should have listened to Mr. Stark! I should have purchased a snow-blower as he asked! āNonsense, sir!ā I said! āWe Jarvises are a hardy breed,ā I said! āThe expenditure is quite unnecessary,ā I said! Bah!ā
Oh, Jarvis. Never talk Tony out of spending money. He has too much of it. He just lost $50,000 gambling like it was nothing.
Anyway, Thor shows up and clears all the snow by just twirling his hammer around super fast. Heās considerate like that.
With his afternoon cleared up, Jarvis invites Thor to join him watching the knickerbockers game on TV. Which is apparently ābasketball.ā
Since Thorās afternoon is also open, heās happy to watch sports with Jarvis.
It starts snowing again. Jarvis, not wanting work to pile up, asks Thor if he can control the weather.
And Thor is like āyeah but I donāt want to tamper with the natural order too much but hey just this once, Iāll do it for you buddyā but then the STRANGE COMPULSION LINES ATTACK and Thor flies off, Jarvis wondering if his question offended the thunder god.
Hmm. We really did just have four full pages of the Avengers individually reacting to the same thing.
Thatās one way to fill out a script.
I mean, itās probably padding but the Avengers are all engaged in their own downtime thing, except Cap who is the only one who is punching things at the moment.
And I do like to see the Avengers doing non-action things.
Anyway, the Avengers all end up at a Brooklyn scrapyard where Moondragonās ship is hovering in wait and finally the Avengers put together the dots.
AH of course! The person that keeps messing with our minds has once again messed with our minds! Is so obvious in hindsight!
Iron Man: āObviously! Who else would have been so arrogant as to invade our minds and manipulate us like toys -- ? Who else but the self-appointed āgoddess of the mindā? She ought to be made the 1982 Chutzpah Poster Child for this stunt!ā
The spaceship shoots down an elevator beam, which is like a tractor beam but it sounds less rural.
Iām not sure how we all settled on tractor beam anyway. Was it Star Wars? Probably.
So Thor and Iron Man want to march up into that ship and give Moondragon a piece of their minds. Thor would fain confront her for this impudence.
Team Leader Janet Van Dyne says belay. Now that theyāre not being STRANGE COMPULSIONED she wants to go home and get some clothes.
She managed to salvage a handkerchief from her purse and tie it around herself in a makeshift costume but you know whatās nice? Underwear, sometimes.
Although, it probably speaks to Janetās fashion sense that Cap sees her handkerchief costume and sincerely wonders if its her new costume. You just canāt tell with her!
Anyway, it also speaks to how hard the Avengers are to lead because Thor and Iron Man and even Cap all ignore Wasp and march right into the elevator beam.
Its like herding cats!
No wonder Cap was happy to give up the job to her.
Wasp also points out that this is possibly a trap and one of them should have stayed outside and Cap is like āoh shit youāre rightā but it is too late for any kind of tactical thinking.
Inside the ship though they find no trap and no body. They poke around the ship but canāt find Moondragon or anybody else.
And then when Cap decides they should leave before the ship takes off, Iron Man discovers that the ship has already taken off.
Its a very smooth ride, they didnāt notice at all.
With the Avengers going off on a begrudging space adventure, a hologram recording of Drax the Destroyer comes on and starts narrating about his life.
How he was made to destroy Thanos and then when someone else destroyed Thanos, Drax was kind of left purposeless so he bummed around space aimlessly for a while before meeting up with his adult daughter who was raised on Titan.
Aka Moondragon.
Hey, I donāt remember if Iāve mentioned it on Drax or Moondragonās previous appearances but theyāre family!
Anyway, Drax recording talks about how with Moondragonās mind powers she opened his mind and helped him find a purpose in life.
Apparently, uh, āseeking knowledge and the bliss of ultimacy.ā
Fun family activities, no doubt.
The two of them came upon a war-torn planet where tens of thousands would die in a single battle.
Hologram Drax: āMove to pity, Moondragon sought to help these beings end their strife using the awesome might of her mind! She succeeded! Peace reigns -- yet, there is danger beyond imagining unfolding here! I realize now, that -- wait! I sense someone drawing near! I must end this quickly, lest I am discovered! Hear me! Only the Avengers can prevent the evil to come! Find them! Bring them to this ship! Quickly!ā
And then the hologram cuts out. Creepily.
Huh.
So Drax sent the ship to bring the Avengers to help Moondragon. But Moondragon is the one who STRANGE COMPULSED the Avengers to find the ship.
Which is impressive that she can do that from across light years.
Iāll adjust my personal ranking of how impressive she might be next to Jean Gray.
So the situation is dire enough to send an empty ship but also not time consuming enough that Moondragon can take some time out of her schedule to make the Avengers ditch their activities and go on a spaceship ride.
Kinda mysterious.
Wasp even points out how weird this is.
Iron Man: āThe computers were programmed to begin the return flight as soon as the shipās sensors ascertained that we Avengers were aboard!ā
Wasp: āBut it doesnāt make sense... I mean, the message sounded like it was meant for anybody who happened to find the ship -- yet, Moondragon obviously made sure weād find it first!ā
By the by, I have a random prog rock playlist playing while Iām working on this post AND IāLL TELL YOU! Random prog rock over random Avengers space adventure really works well together.
Anyway, the Avengers only know that whatever the mysterious threat, it must be great to worry someone of Draxās power.
The ship drops out of hyperspace above an alien world.
Wasp: āGuys, all this is just beginning to sink in for me! Weāre zillions of miles from Earth -- ! A-and weāre about to set foot on an alien world -- and I donāt have a thing to wear! Literally! Except this old tarp I found!ā
Being Janet is suffering.
I mean, I see spacesuits in the background of that panel.
And its weird that Moondragon doesnāt have a closet aboard her own ship. Although itād all be capes and plunging necklines.
HEY WAIT speaking of capes, why doesnāt Thor lend his?
Heāll let some little shit of an immortal child wrap up in his cape but he wonāt lend it to his good pal and team leader, Janet Van Wasp??
Grow you some manners, Thor!
Anyway, couture misadventures of Janet van Dyne aside. Time to disembark.
The Avengers take the de-elevator beam down, gazing in wonder at an alien world.
Well, Jan does. The others are kind of blase. Fie and poo on them.
Wasp: āItās beautiful, b-but so strange! Almost terrifyingly strange! I feel the way I felt the first time I shrunk down to insect size -- my lord, this is a whole, new world!ā
Cap: āNew world or not, this looks pretty much like the town squares do back home!ā
Dammit, Cap! Eat some poetry for your soul!
Iron Man comments that being beamed down from a spaceship in the middle of a shopping day is not a subtle entrance but Thor wouldnāt know subtle if it bit him on his cape.
Thor: āFie! The god of thunder cares little for subtlety! Would that Iād summoned a raging tempest to herald our arrival! I like this not! Why is there no greeting for us? Are we but serfs, left to wend our own way to--ā
Thankfully, Jan cuts off his weird monologue (Thor is being particularly goddish right now) and asks a random shopper to take them to her leader.
The alien starts responding in some alien language but partway through the Avengers can suddenly understand her.
She didnāt start speaking English. She kept speaking her native tongue but the Avengers could suddenly understand it like it were English, almost exactly as if the text in the speech bubbles became English.
Because it did. Its a nice little effect.
But its like someone (probably Moondragon) flipped a switch inside the Avengersā heads to turn the subtitles on.
The alien shopper points the Avengers towards the ātemple of the peace goddessā and they head off to there.
Thor comments that if Moondragon is fiddling with the language settings of their brains, then she must be aware of their arrival.
Moondragon, coming down the stairs and looking fab: āOf course, I am aware of your arrival, Thor! There is precious little in this universe of which the goddess of the mind is not aware! Welcome to Ba-Bani!ā
Its actually a really good look for Moondragon. Sheās still in green and cape and plunging neckline but the style has changed. Its more sexy priestess than sexy space swimsuit and opera cape.
It goes well with the new role sheās apparently taken on Ba-Bani.
She thanks the Avengers for coming which Thor and Iron Man are only too keen to point out that she didnāt leave them a whole lot of choice.
Wasp again tells them that sheāll handle this and tries to tell Moondragon that sheās the chairwoman of the Avengers now. But Moondragon cuts her off to tell her she already knows.
But also, that her thoughts have been with her in the trying times sheās had of late.
This is a kinder Moondragon compared to the one from #211. Wonder whither the change of heart.
Moondragon: āSometimes, I wish it were not my lot to see most clearly that which is hidden, Janet! I could not help but be aware of your husbandās tragic downfall and the resultant turmoil in your soul, which you hide so well! I have shared your agony, and his! Greater, though, is my pain, for I see that the tragedy is deeper and more ironic than you yet realize -- and I fear it shall only worsen!ā
... This is why people hate psychics.
Janet herself can only hurriedly change the subject in the face of this overly comprehensive sympathy.
Wasp: āUm... Draxās message sounded urgent! Why donāt we discuss that?ā
Hah.
So Moondragon turns on main screen to show a hostile army - consisting of the last of Ba-Baniās warmongers, cutthroats, mercenaries and ravagers banded together - headed towards the capital city which is the city that they are currently in.
Wasp questions if Moondragon really just dragged them halfway across the universe to quell a local uprising.
Iron Man further points out that UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE moondragon the Avengers donāt make a habit to interfere in the political affairs of others. Plus, why canāt Drax handle this? Or why doesnāt Moondragon just mindzap the bad guys?
Iron Man: āOr do you reserve that treatment for those people you claim are your friends -- like us!ā
Zing.
Moondragon takes exception to this. For one, she denies having set herself up as a queen or anything. The people of Ba-Bani rule themselves. She merely quelled the global war through a bit of careful psychic prodding and suggestion among world leaders.
Moondragon: āIn a sense, I merely improved communications among the world leaders and removed the need for war!ā
Drax: āShe has saved countless millions of lives already, Avengers!ā
For another thing, the peace is still fragile. She has to maintain a constant rapport with said world leaders and influential people to preserve it.
Even as it relies on a careful, selective touch, she says the effort is staggering and she canāt ALSO psychically smack the invading army.
And point the last, sheās only just convinced him that his purpose in life doesnāt have to be destroying and it would be shitty to throw him at violence again and reawaken his destructive nature.
Thus, the need for outside help.
If the Avengers canāt or wonāt stop the army, the global bloodshed may reignite and Moondragon wonāt be able to stop it again. MILLIONS WILL DIE!
So since Wasp is the chairperson, it falls to her to decide what to do.
And I canāt help but notice that when it comes time to decide whether to intervene in a very foreign extraterrestial conflict, Iron Man finally defers to her instead of her having to yank him back from whatever impulsive thing he wants to do.
Being leader of the Avengers has gotta suck.
Anyway, Wasp decides theyāll stop the immediate threat to the city but after that... well.... theyāll see.
But its a decision Wasp feels weird about because her head is all weird, like her mind is in a fog. Sheās sure there were some follow-up questions she wanted to ask Moondragon that she canāt remember anymore.
Iām sure that forgetting what you wanted to ask a psychic is a coincidence and forebodes nothing.
Sheās probably just tired.
Scene cut to the aggressive army of aggressors peering at the horizon going āhey are those missiles? Canāt be, the peace goddess told them to abandonĀ weapons.ā
SURPRISE, ITS THE AVENGERS
Surprise to them, anyway. If I paused long enough to let you guess, Iām sure you would have guessed the Avengers.
Anyway. Iām pretty sure Wasp is still wearing the handkerchief, although she has managed to tailor it to being less obviously makeshift.
I was about to complain that they didnāt stop and let her get some clothes but. I mean, what are the odds that the local shop contains either clothing her size or clothing that can change size?
Anyway, Wasp still feels weird about the decision to get involved.
Wasp: āI canāt stop wondering whether or not weāre doing the right thing! Moony says she isnāt ruling this planet, yet, she is controlling the destinies of these people! Isnāt that the same thing? I-Iām so confused!ā
But since the army does have guns and they are out for blood, she doesnāt have any hesitation to beat them up a little.
Some decent Wasp action, too.
And itās not just Wasp who has misgivings.
Iron Man also has his doubts, as he picks up a guy in each hand and slams them together.
Iron Man: āI canāt help feeling sorry for these guys! Theyāre the underdogs! Somethingās eating at me about what weāre doing here, but for the life of me -- I canāt quite put my finger on it!ā
Cap too. In a specifically Cap way.
Cap: āThese rebels are fighting for freedom -- but what they want is the freedom to make war! Weāve got to stop them -- I know that! Still, for some reason, my instinct are screaming that we shouldnāt!ā
The only Avenger who isnāt having doubts is (by process of elimination) Thor who is throwing tanks around and doing his best divine smack talk.
Thor: āBeware, base scoundrels -- lest the wrath of the thunder god destroy thee!ā
Anyway, misgivings aside, the Avengers arenāt having much trouble actually beating up this army. For the last of the warmongers, theyāre not much of a match for a super-soldier, a guy in power armor, an actual god of actual thunder, and Janet goddamn van Dyne.
Like Iron Man said, the evil invading army just feels like the underdogs here.
From a distance, Drax spectates the battle. And notices a pair of rebels closing on Cap from behind. Theyāre planning to shoot Cap in the back and hopefully that act will let them rally the army against the remaining Avengers.
Drax realizes he could stop them. Or warn Cap. But he feels a strange contentment to just watch.
This must be what being Uatu is like.
The two rebels shoot Cap off his sky-sled. He barely managed to get his shield up to protect himself.
While Iron Man catches Cap from a fateful plummet, Wasp goes after the two who attacked Cap.
Wasp: āHey! You on the sled -- ! Iām an Avenger, and I donāt think what you did was nice or fair, so Iām avenging it! So there!ā
Hey! The team name has a meaning! You did it, Wasp! You named the team Avengers because it sounded cool and then you finally did some avenging 218 (plus annuals and crossovers) later!
Proud of you.
Anyway, Thor catches the two rebels from their own fateful plummet, declaring that they donāt deserve the honor of death in combat.
Then while sort of waving the two like visual aids at the army, Thor demands they surrender.
Thor: āHear me, armies of the rebellion! Your leaders are my captives! Your cause is doomed! Lay down your arms -- now! I will warn you but this once!ā
Army Guy: āWe are undone!ā
Another Guy: āWe surrender!ā
Soon, the Avengers return to the capital city, Thor carrying the apparent rebel leaders on a random piece of debris.
Moondragon thanks the Avengers for what they did. She also asks that the Avengers turn the rebel ringleaders over to the cityās civil authority so that they may, in time, be rehabilitated.
She also mentions that Drax has alerted the cityās police to take the other rebels into custody and to destroy their surrendered weapons.
And then she tries to hurry the Avengers along.
Moondragon: āThen, truly, it is over! You have done a magnificent and noble labor this day, Avengers! Father, please make ready my ship! They must be anxious to return to Earth!ā
Cap interjects saying that theyād prefer to stay a day or two to take in the sights.
Wasp grouses at Cap speaking for the Avengers. Dangit, sheās supposed to speak for the Avengers!
With but an ellipses of hesitation, Moondragon agrees that the world is new to the Avengers and thereās a lot of stuff for them to see. And says that theyāll leave tomorrow instead.
Nice try, Moondragon. Thereās five pages of plot left. Canāt wrap up early.
So then we have a twelve hour timeskip so the Avengers can nap and shower and its off to explore an alien world! With tour guide Drax!
The first thing they learn is that its never nighttime on Ba-Bani! I donāt know if thats a multiple suns thing or an orbit thing but its always daytime.
Janet does not approve.
Anyway, Thor ditches the group because heās seen a lot of worlds and it just doesnāt interest him. Heās going to find something else to do.
And then the Avengers split up.
Cap wants to mix with the people a bit and Wasp wants to not wear a tarp so theyāre headed to the market.
Iron Man spotted some high tech factories and dangit if he doesnāt love industry so heās going to have Drax take him through one.
And then we skip ahead another hour. Which is a fairly reasonable amount of time to shop, probably.
Janet has obtained Actual Clothes That Arenāt A Tarp.
And because her money is no good here, even if she had any on her, she told the tailor to bill it to Moondragon.
Which is funny for at least two reasons.
The first of which is that I always find it funny when anyone on the Avengers foists their bills on someone else. The second of which will make sense when I cover next issue.
Anyway, mentioning Moondragon makes Cap remember that he wanted to bring her up. His thoughts have been so muddled about it but thatās the real reason why he wanted to stay longer.
Wasp: āBecause you suspect that sheās manipulating us -- ? Because you think things arenāt quite kosher here on Ba-Bani? I was a bit slower on the uptake than you, but... I agree! Letās just nose around a little, shall we?ā
Sheās not. Unsuspicious.
Cap even has a good idea where to start looking and takes Wasp on the sky-sled to the site of the battle from earlier.
Some guards or police or something have the area blocked off and tell the Avengers that nobody is to enter the area. Especially not the outworlders.
But since these guards arenāt armed thanks to Moondragonās sensible gun control policies, Wasp tells them to screw off and Cap just flies around them.
Cap hopes to find an escaped rebel and ask them about their cause or maybe examine their abandoned equipment.
Itād take a long, exhaustive investigation to piece things together that way but itāll be worth doing.
But he doesnāt have to.
Because when Cap and Wasp arrive at the battlefield, they find that two of the workers working to clear up debris are the rebel leaders from earlier.
Convenient!
Wasp: āPardon me, fellas, but, did you, um, by any chance lead a rebellion yesterday?ā
Rebel Leader: āWhat? Oh, that! Yes! I canāt understand what got into me! I was tending my shop in the city, when suddenly I felt compelled to seize a weapon and come out here! Thousands of others were similarly, mysteriously compelled! Out of the blue, my friend, here, and I became obsessed with the idea of leading this impromptu army in an attack upon the city! Thank the goddess you stopped us!ā
So. Yeah.
Where have we heard SUDDEN COMPULSION before as a thing that makes people do things?
I mean, this isnāt exactly subtle.
Moondragon forced an army to form and then had the Avengers beat them up.
The plot thickens.
Meanwhile, Drax takes Iron Man on a tour of a communications center. Ba-Bani has low-orbit anti-grav satellites in the sky for communications and for monitoring the city and its surrounding environs.
Every public event is recorded. For historical and legal matters, surely.
You ever see a villain somehow monitoring something and thought āwait how did they have a camera there?ā WELL BA-BANI HAS YOU COVERED!
THEY HAVE EVERYTHING MONITORED!
For example, Iron Man punches up a video of the battle from yesterday and specifically to the moment when Cap was ambushed.
Iron Man: āSay... I hadnāt realized how close you were to us, Drax! You were right on top of us! You must have seen the ambush developing! Why didnāt you do something -- or even just yell ālook out!āā
Drax: āI -- I donāt know...ā
Iron Man: āI canāt believe you just stood there watching while Cap was almost cut in half! Drax, weāve been in scrapes together before -- that isnāt like you! Whatās wrong? Whatās going on?ā
Drax: āNothing! Nothing! I am fine!ā
The hallmark of someone truly fine, shouting that they are fine.
Or just saying that they are fine.
Does āIām fineā even mean what its definition meaning means anymore? Does anyone use it sincerely?
Anyway, Iron Man decides that āIām fineā means āIām not fineā and that Moondragon has been messing with his head.
And by āhisā I could mean either Drax or Iron Man. Because Iron Man has felt his thoughts muddled lately too.
Its a bit of a trend.
But Drax refuses to believe it. Shouting that its not true; his daughter wouldnāt do that.
While one of the people manning the communications center just kind of stares at this argument.
Because. It does sort of draw attention. Drax is making all kinds of dramatic poses and Iron Man marched over to grab him by the shoulders.
(I think communication console woman is wikipediaing Drax because pictures of him are showing up on all the consoles)
Iron Man: āYou āknowā what she wants you to know! She controls thoughts! How can anyone really be certain whether heās thinking what he wants -- or what she wants? She can make us think, say, or do anything, and we wouldnāt even realize it! Even this could be her manipulating us -- but I donāt think so! I know thereās a limit to her power! She canāt have her attention everywhere at once! Pray itās mostly elsewhere for now and listen to me while we have a chance!ā
So maybe Moondragon is distracted and thatās why Iron Man is coherent enough to have this conversation. But what could she be distracted by?
Well, scene change to the temple of Moondragon and Thor arriving at it.
Moondragon: āThor! I had hoped you might come!ā
Thor: āSpare me your guile, woman! You knew I would come -- for ātwas you did plant this āwhimā in my mind, was it not?ā
Moondragon: āYes... it was!ā
Thor: āYou are less subtle than Iād imagined, woman!ā
Moondragon: āDeliberately! You are a god, Thor! I need practice no subtlety upon you!ā
Thor accuses her of having taken total control of this world and to Thor, Moondragon admits it.
But she has a good excuse.
Moondragon: āBehold, Thor! This city is alive -- ! Fresh with gardens and music and the laughter of children! When I came here it was a blood-soaked battleground! I brought peace to Ba-Bani! I made this! Have I done wrong?ā
Its a tough question. Because psychic mind control isnāt really real and moral philosophy is also probably made up.
On some level, a society is going to put restrictions on people for their own good. Like seat belt laws or food safety standards. But on the other hand, Moondragon is controlling peopleās thoughts.
Is it right to do that for a good cause?
(X-Men sure as hell hopes so with all the psychics running around in those books. Sheesh.)
But Drax did not think it was right.
Per the hologram recording and also Moondragonās confession here, Drax sent the ship to get the Avengers. She wasnāt able to stop it so she expedited the Avengers finding it so it seemed like she was in on it.
Then she staged a fake revolution for the Avengers to crush so they could leave satisfied that they had done a thing.
She also put Drax under her strict control after he sent the ship.
Moondragon: āThere! You know now the sum of my āguile,ā Thor! Iām relieved to be confessed, for gods should have no secrets between them! We should be closer... It is the role of gods to set aright the paths of lesser beings! āTwas ever thus! My labor is difficult... and lonely! I need your help... and your comforting touch...ā
Thor: āMoondragon... it is not good to tamper overmuch with the natural course of things...ā
Moondragon: āBut this once -- ? For my sake...ā
Thor: āFor... your... sake...ā
Moondragon: āLove me, son of Odin! Be thou mine!ā
Thor: āAye... thine...ā
Dammit, Moondragon! If youāre using mind control to make Thor love you, donāt be doing that! It happens to him far too much!
Every damn enchantress on Asgard for one!
So on the one hand, Wasp, Cap, and Iron Man are wise to Moondragonās shit now.
On the other hand, Thor seems to have been seduced to her corner.
And on the third, ambiguous hand, Drax who seems like maybe heās on the fence. Maybe Iron Man just needs to shake him some more.
Next time sure is going to be some kind of WAR AGAINST THE GODS!
According to the big pink words, anyway.
Hey. Psst. Thereās a SUDDEN COMPULSION to follow @essential-avengersā and to like and reblog this post. Weird, huh? Maybe if you listen to that SUDDEN COMPULSION youāll get to go on a space ride to space. No promises.

General Discussion: All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Part 2

This is a part 2 of a recent dump of stuff Iām talking about in regards to AEW, if you want to see my critiques and comments in hindsight about AEW Check it out on part 1 -> Here Part 2 is gonna revolve around the future, immediate and long-term, starting with the upcoming All Out PPV
All Out 2020
Criticisms about the Buy In aside, All Out still looks like a heavily stacked card, which is always a positive. I do worry a little that the Tooth and Nail matchās addition will cut into othersā time so hopefully everyone gets a good amount, but if people criticise some matches for being too short remember that fan demand insisted that the same Swole/Baker match be on the paid card rather than having a lot of time to show it for free. And as much as people criticise AEWās women, the womenās matches are among the top 5 most anticipated matches on the card, probably only behind the tag title and world title match, isnāt that a great thing? Not to mention that the womenās title match encourages AEW/NWA relations, which really would make wrestling better if wrestlers could be more fluid in their appearances. But anyway, All Out is something I look forward to, so letās break down some predictions? (if youāre wondering why Iām not just doing this on a podcast or something, my voice is not the dulcet flowing river of articulation my writing would imply to be, I like having time and proofing my words, plus if I talk to much my tongue swells and I stutter, stammer and suck at eye contact) So my thoughts for the full card
Predictions
The Buy In
Casino Battle Royale - Eddie Kingston. While Iād be down for FĆ©nix, Pentagon, Archer or even a new or returning face like PAC to win, I think Kingston is the safe bet. The man talks like liquid and his match with Cody brought a lot of eyes to the product. This will continue and start new hostilities, but donāt expect anyone who has faced Moxley before to win, AEW donāt do title rematches so much.
Private Party vs Dark Order (Silver and Reynolds) - this quickly put-together match is going to Private Party, because Silver and Reynolds are enhancement tag teams still, they can win but they wonāt win often. Plus the more Silver loses the more bits heāll have with Brodie on BTE and those are gold.
Main Card
Tooth and Nail - Britt Baker, I expect the cinematic match to have shenanigans but also protect Baker in the midst of her injury recovery. While Swole has been doing the physical lifting of the feud I think having Britt lose on her return could be the wrong choice in the long run.
Dark Order vs The Nightmare Family - Dark Order, Brodie has elevated the tag team to the point where they are a big faction, and they need the big win for this. Cardona, Sky and the Natural Nightmares can take this loss too, but Iād expect QT or Dustin to take the fall for this. Bonus prediction that Tay Conti will indeed join the Dark Order with Anna Jay, leading to them beating down Brandi and Allie at ringside (setting up a womenās tag feud thatād explain why they were kept on other sides of the Deadly Draw bracket)
The Young Bucks vs Jurassic Express - This one I have Jurassic Express, it may be an upset because the Bucks are still reeling from Hangmanās betrayal, this can also lead to the Bucks being more heelish to accompany a Cleaner Kenny Omega. Keep your eye on Jungle Boy, AEW are still hot on him for good reason, thisāll be a huge scalping for Jurassic Express if they pull it off.
Broken Rules - A tough one, but Iām gonna stick with the Multifarious Matt Hardy. I donāt think he wants to end his career just yet and AEW would be foolish to let him go. Plus technically Sami is 2-0 in this feud, so it wonāt hurt Sami too much to win in Hardyās wheelhouse.
Mimosa Mayhem - Another tough one to put down the middle, I am gonna go with Orange Cassidy though. I think Jericho wants to amend the sloppy finish Cassidyās win had and thisāll make for good comedy to see Jericho (and maybe Hager) flailing around in Mimosa
Womenās Title - I will be happy with either winning, but my heart says Shida. Mainly because I think Britt is the one who should take it from her, their last match was a banger after all. Rosa wonāt look weak though, they may even have Shida challenge for the NWA womenās title down the line.
Tag Titles - FTR. Thatās it, thatās all you need to know. Hangmanās head is out of the game and Kenny is becoming the Cleaner, itās time for this schism to start properly, theyāve held it for about a year as well, itās time.
World Title (Moxley cannot use Paradigm Shift) - Itās easy to say MJF, he is the home breed future and Moxley has had a long run defeating tougher opponents, but I am thinking that Moxley will retain. This is mainly because the odds are so stacked against him, heāll eke out a win despite MJFās trickery. The challenger will look fantastic to prove that he will be champion some day, but not today. Instead I think MJF will be thwarted by miscommunication, and as he hinted at during his tag match with Jurassic Express, will split from Wardlow for hisĀ āfatal errorā. Then weāll get Moxley vs Kingston which can be just as fantastic.
Looking to the Future SoĀ ālooking to the futureā is not gonna all be direct consequences of All Out, some of it is just stuff Iād like to see happen, not all of it has to and my enjoyment isnāt killed from it, but certain things would make AEW better in my opinion. Business Relations So of course itād be great to have more working relationships with other brands, AEW is already close to OWE and AAA, getting NWA on board would be a good step to establishing good relationships with ROH as well, maybe even NJPW. On the womenās side itād be nice if they made more solid ties with Cyberfight - which has DDT Pro, TJPW and NOAH, maybe even Stardom, Sendai Girls, EVE and Ice Ribbon. More relationships would offer wrestlers not working Dynamite or Dark to perhaps represent elsewhere. In this representing itād be great to see more outside titles being shown, itās free advertising really. Thunder Rosa will for sure be carrying her NWA Womenās title but wouldnāt it be cool if other brand titles could be carried; Kenny carrying his AAA title with the tag titles, Cardona his Internet title, Lucha Bros their HOG and AAA Tag titles, Big Swole her Phoenix of Rise title, Moxley his NJPW US title (though I expect him to lose to KENTA soon), Rosaās TJPW International Princess title as well and Yuka Sakazakiās TJPW Princess of Princess Title. It may be me but seeing these titles does add an air of legitimacy to the competitors, showing how successful they are overseas while promoting other promotions. Iād also like to pitch aĀ āLocked Downā mini show or segment where AEW could show what their international talent is doing, Emi Sakuraās ChocoPro could be a light hearted segment, PAC could do some solid promos and like showing the titles, itād expose the roster as talented. New Signings Someone just has to do good to have people ask for AEW to sign them, but in some cases it would be cool to sign them up. Of the frequent flyers right now AEW would be mad not to sign Ivelisse and Diamante, and Iāve already expressed my hopes that they sign Will Hobbs, Serpentico, Shawn Dean, Brian Pillman Jr, Kilynn King, Tay Conti, Veda Scott, Nicole Savoy/Lilā Swole and Pineapple Pete, but itād also be good business to at least call up Renee Paquette/Good/Young and Mauro Ranallo, even if it is for some guest appearances. Signing the likes of Danhausen, Warhorse, āSpeedballā Mike Bailey, Millie McKenzie, Laura Di Matteo, Lana Austin, Jamie Hayter, Chris Brookes, Maki Itoh, Miyu Yamashita, Mirio (if he wants to come back into wrestling) and AR Fox. This being said, this should only ease into the Second Show, where we can expose more of the current roster as well. Speaking of Which. (A Few) New Accolades With a bigger division will require more competition. Not all of them need to be titles but something to be fought for. MJFās Diamond Ring and Cageās FTW title can help in that matter, but I think a Trios Accolade would be next in line for AEW. This would open the door for more teams to compete; The Elite, Jurassic Express, Best Friends, SCU, Dark Order, Nightmare Family, Death Triangle etc. would still keep it competitive and open the door for more stories of faction warfare. Since this is only my thoughts I would love to see the tag division be intergender too but I wouldnāt hold my breath on that. If we do move to this though PLEASE use whoever designed the world and tag belt, not the TNT belt. Faction Bolstering AEW are looking at the NJPW formula or big factions going into war or tensions with one another, which is good since it does make for lines to be written in the sand. But I think the factions can just be a little bit bigger in some places, and some are easy to add in already. Conti joins Dark Order for 2 women there, have Ivelisse and Diamante join the Inner Circle so we have full LAX (plus Ivelisse tagged with Sammy in LU), Statlander can pair with Best Friends and renew BTEās skits of her and Orange Cassidyās palpable sexual tension, I would also enjoy the thought of TH2 joining with Kip and Penelope just to be a faction of talented arseholes. May be the crass side of me, but I also seem to want Brian Pillman Jr to join the Gunn Club simply so we can have an entrance theme that startsĀ āSomeone call 911, Pillmanās got a Gunnā, Vickie Guerrero could grow her managing of Nyla to an all womenĀ āLas Guerrerasā faction maybe with Kilynn King, Shaul Guerrero, Abadon or someone else would be a decent move in my books but an exciting faction I can see clearly is a Moxley faction with Darby Allin and Lance Archer. Imagine having Jake the Snake taking care of all that, oh yes is that the good stuff. Future Feuds Weāll end with talking about some feuds I hope to see down the line too, even if theyāre not set up already. Iāve already expressed my want for Kingston vs Moxley but another Kingston feud I see in the making is against PAC, Kingston is the man with the plan but PAC will want his Death Triangle buddies back. Speaking of, Moxley could use some bangers with Fenix and Pentagon, both are megastars. While the tag division is looking like itāll lead to FTR vs Bucks, I think the bigger money is FTR vs Bucks vs Hangman and Kenny first, with Kenny having the Elite ties and Hangman with the FTR ties the storytelling would be ridiculously immense. This thought almost made me pick Hangman and Kenny to win at All Out...almost. I would expect a lot of title defenses from Mr. Brodie Lee, particularly from Cardona but Iād love it if Jungle Boy was the one to win it from him, and for JB to face Sammy Guevara, of the 4 Young Prospects of AEW I donāt think Sammy and JB have gone 1-on-1, could be wrong but Sammy usually went for Darby and JB to MJF, FĆ©nix vs JB would be excellent also. Luchasaurus is also due his hoss match with the Butcher, as well as further conflict with Cage and Archer Also Iād like Shida vs Conti, both are very martial arts-like in their wrestling especially the latter so it would be a good physical match. But yeah, thatās out of my system for now, weāve talked some good, some bad and some middle, donāt think it matters to anyone but Iāve said my piece Bring on All Out!

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: No One Man Should Have All That Power
Project Power released today. Itās a proper new movie and i am starved for that kind of content. Plus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in this. I love that dude and heās been MIA since getting hitched. Of course i wanted to check this thing out. Iāve heard god things, not great, but what can i expect from a Netflix level film, right?
The Good
I like the premise of this movie. The concept is actually pretty dope. I like the idea of a five-minute-mutant plot. It took a while for me to understand the mechanics though but it looks like cats already have a power? And the pill activates the latent abilities? The more you take, the longer it lasts. Itās very interesting.
The aesthetic of this movie is very unique. The presentation of this world feels very deliberate, very purposeful. The color grading goes a long way to making this thing feels gritty, sweaty, like the south. This thing takes place in NOLA and you feel like youāre there with these characters.
Jaime Fox is as good as ever. His Art feels like a redeemed, more realistic, Vincent Downs, his character from Sleepless. You feel Artās desperation, his pure intent. You come to understand the intensity he displays and the contempt he has for the people in his interactions. Foxx is a consummate professional so none of this is a surprise.
Itās dope seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt acting in stuff again. I love this dude and his talent was truly missed. Coming back with this one was a good idea as action always suited him. The character, Frank Shaver, is a little cliche, feels a lot like Jack Hoyt, but Levitt elevates the material considerably.
Dominique Fishback is the third principal and kind of POV character, Robin. Sheās one of the most cliche characters i have ever seen captured on film but Fishback makes it work. Thatās actually a running theme with this movie but this cast is enough to make these caricatures feel real. Cats are talking about this is a star turning performance for Fishback and I'd agree if this was released in theaters. This would have been a great theater movie.
The supporting cast is okay. Everyone is serviceable with what they have. Courtney B. Vance is always a pleasure and Amy Lauren Landecker was appropriately cartoonishly evil. I had fun with everyone i this flick, especially Casey Neistat. That was a real treat seeing him do his acting thing. Iāve been a fan of Neistat for years and itās always a pleasure seeing him expand his portfolio like this.
The soundtrack to this thing is f*cking amazing. I was actively enthralled by the music more than the drama onscreen. Not that what was shown was bad or anything, itās just that the music killed, man.
The Bad
While i do like the writing, i think this script might have been a fun read, a lot of the foreshadowing and metaphor comes across as a bit heavy-handed. I think one more go at this script would have done it wonders. What we got is fine, donāt misunderstand, i just think it could have been better.
Youāve kind of seen this movie before, executed much better. Training Day feels kind of the same and that flick is a masterpiece. Bad Lieutenant is another one that shares the same DNA. This isnāt a huge knock, thereās no creativity left in Hollywood, but it was something to note.
I donāt much care for the camera work. This feels like a Michael Bay production but more subdued. Lots of dutch angles, ls of handhelds, lots of close ups. I know a lot of people think that sh*t is cool, makes the film more intense or whatever, but a nice wide framed with purpose, can go along way to establishing tone.
Netflix is starting to fall into this trap where their films feel same-y. Project Power feels like Bright which feels like The Old Guard. I donāt know why that is but it was just something i noticed. Iād hate for a great idea to end up feeling like every other release on this service just because Netflix has a type, you know?
Why is MGK in everything Netflix produces??
The Verdict
Overall, i liked Project Power. Itās pretty entertaining and, of the original Netflix releases available, one of my favorites. The plot is a little trite and characters feel like every generic, gritty, crime thriller trope on the checklist, but the framing around that is worth the time. The way the cliches are presented is pretty cool and there is an undeniable energy permeating throughout this production. Power isnāt breaking any new ground with it's narratives or concepts but it is a fun watch anchored by great performances from Foxx, Levitt, and Fishback. The actual powers displayed are interesting and the way theyāre portrayed are pretty exceptional. This movie isnāt bad but it aināt great, either. At the end of the day, itās worth a watch.

Elevator Pitch
I had a blast watching this film. I came into it with a bit of skepticism, mostly due to the enthusiastic marketing leading up to it and because of the genre, but primarily I had an open mind. I hadnāt looked into who had written or directed it (it must have come up in the endless trailers I had seen, but somehow I didnāt retain it) and Iām glad I didnāt. More on that, later. So, as you can see above, almost every aspect of this film I felt was well above average. It grabbed my attention at the very beginning, and as it established its rules of what it reveals to the audience vs. what it reveals to the other characters, I was hooked. And then, at the culmination of the first act it gives the audience a piece of information that you would never expect from a film like this. Suddenly, youāre off the rails of āformulaā and in uncharted territory. Everything is called into question, and I went from hooked to RIVETED. And the best part is that this film follows through on the expectation, it delivers on itās delightful premise. It should probably go without being said, but you definitely want to experience this film once without knowing whodunit. So, if you havenāt seen it already, stop reading and go see it right now before you read something on social media that ruins the mystery of first viewing.
Analysis
Rian Johnson is now solidly on my radar. I was not aware of him when I saw āBrickā, and I thought āLooperā was a pretty mixed bag. Iām no huge fan of the new Star Wars films, so Iād kinda written him off. But with this film heās really back in his element. It makes sense, now that Iāve looked at his IMDB closely, that the writer/director of this also made āBrickā. It actually makes me want to see if I can find the screenplays for both āLooperā and āThe Last Jediā and see if there was a substantial degradation from outside interference as those stories made their way from page to screen. I am very impressed with how Johnson has managed to make this story feel simultaneously super tight, but also as if anything could happen. Itās a real testament to solid writing. There are so many elements of reincorporation and red herrings to make the watcher feel intelligent just for paying attention and following along.Ā
<Minor Spoilers from this point on> I think the most interesting thing about this story is that it is entirely comprised of characters who experience flat arcs. No one fundamentally grows or changes meaningfully over the course of the film. Instead, the source of tension is entirely in the manipulation of information and how close (or seemingly close) the characters play their hands to their chests. Through the course of the story the characters learn each othersā true colors, and it is done in such a satisfying way. The film works entirely on how it reveals the truth to the audience, doling it out piece by piece. It lets you fill in the gaps in information with assumption so you donāt realize youāre fooling yourself while watching it, even while the movie is telling you that the mystery most of the characters are pondering is functionally non-existent.
Ok, actually, that might be āthe most interesting thing to a writer.ā The objectively most interesting thing, I think, is the Point of View. I went into the film assuming that either the detective(s) would be the protagonist and POV character, or it would be a selectively omniscient POV, with all characters being equally suspect. However, the film does something far more unorthodox, and still somehow manages to maintain utmost suspense and keep you drooling over every morsel of information AND it still pull off a big reveal at the end. Very, very impressed with the creativity of this decision and how the execution doesnāt take away anything for having gone down that road.Ā
There were a few interesting pieces of framing and resonant transitions. Mostly the editing and cinematography went largely unnoticed (which is the sign of āmerelyā good editing) and took a back seat to the writing and acting. This film is essentially half comedy, half thriller. Both the stories and the characters are very amusing and I found myself laughing out loud often. However, the performances manage to maintain the serious and dramatic elements of the story as well, so the shifts in tone and absurd moments of comedy donāt completely undercut the narrative tension. The film even pokes fun at itself and the silly premise of the whole thing at several points, and itās performed and cut around in such a way that it only serves to keep you invested. At one point, I was reminded of a similar moments in this same yearās āParasiteā and āThe Lighthouse,ā which also juggle comedy and suspense in equal measure. 2019 is going to go down as having been a great year for tonally complex, dramatic/suspenseful comedy thrillers. And, this one, in particular, I am very happy to recommend. Donāt miss it.

MARCH AOM
Hello everyone! It is time to reveal who our author of the month is! They will be revealed below along with an interview we conducted with them! Hope you enjoy x
-1D Craft Awards Team
And our March Author of the Month is.....
@marisa-writesā!!!
Questions:
1. Did you start writing fanfiction for One Direction, or was there another fandom that you wrote fanfiction for before this?
Before I found my way to One Direction fanfiction, I wrote Jonas Brothers fanfiction for a few years and I loved it immensely! I wouldnāt still be writing fic to this day if not for the relationships I built in that fandom, and the love I received both from my readers and my writing friends. Iāve been sharing my writing online for about ten years now, which is crazy to me. It was my connection to people I met through JBFA that led me to eventually make my way to 1DFF, though I was a very casual reader and not a writer in the beginning. I was also a casual fan of 1D at the time, definitely into their music but not planning to dive in much beyond that. Oh, how the tables have turned...
2. How old were you when you started writing fanfiction?
In 6th grade, my friends and I used to share the joy of writing this fake gossip column between us in which we were the members of this epic girl band. We would write about all of our exploits in the band and in our fictional personal lives, where we were Ā - obviously - dating famous people, like members of āN Sync and the Backstreet Boys. In 7th grade, I wrote pages and pages of stories on loose-leaf paper about myself and my friends and threw in my celebrity crush of the moment as a love interest, so I suppose those stories were my first attempts at writing fanfiction.
This was in the early 2000s, so I didnāt really know my way around finding fanfics on the internet until a couple of years later, but aside from these self-insert stories, the first piece of fanfiction I remember writing with original characters was a Justin Timberlake one I wrote during my freshman year of high school. I kept it in a spiral that I decorated with pictures of Justin and my āface claimā - before face claims had a name - for my original character, Jamie (to show my age, her face claim was Samantha Mumba). I still have that notebook and know exactly where it is. I pull it out every once in a while to remind myself of the journey my writing has taken, because WOW, was that story bad! But Iād never be where I am if I hadnāt written it!
3. Whatās been your favorite fic youāve written to work on so far?
What a terrible question. Asking me to choose between my stories is a lot like asking me to choose between my non-existent children!
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing all of the projects Iāve shared so far, but the summer that I wrote the sangria series was like magic. Teyana and Niall came out of a couple daysā worth of me listening to one of my favorite R&B artists, Jon B., on repeat, and after one lengthy one-shot in which Iād put a lot of thought into their back-story as well as the one I was telling in that particular piece, I was a goner for them. While writing that series, I was an endless well of inspiration and I enjoyed creating those characters and spending so much time in their world.
The Different Strokes series has been the gift that keeps on giving for a few years now, and the joy thatās come from showcasing Liam and Georgiaās love for one another as their family grows has pleased me immensely.
I also feel very similarly about one of my one-shots, goodnight, good morning. Creatively, it was just an absolute joy to write and I canāt help but regard it with fondness whenever I think about it. It came out of left field for me, but my love of the stuck-in-the-elevator trope combined with my love of Liam in nice winter coats made for a piece of writing I am super proud to say Iāve written.
4. Is there a fic that you really wanted to write, but you just never did?
I have a plethora of barely-started fics that just sit taunting me in my Google Docs. The two that haunt me the most are Basketball Jones, an AU in which Liam is a point guard playing on the same university team as my OFC Tionneās twin brother, Amari, and Roots, in which newly-solo Liam is stoked when presented with the opportunity to work with a legendary soul artist named Maurice Collins to complete his album, but the project ends up getting passed off to Mauriceās daughter Cleo instead. Both stories are the kind you wish would write themselves because you just want them to be out there in the world, you know? But alas, I suppose I have to do the work myself, and I just havenāt been able to get either project to take off just yet.
5. Whatās your favorite trope to write?
ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS! God, Iām such a sucker for it. I know a lot of people are fans of the build-up and all the angst and heartache and reconciliation that comes with it, but Iām always the one at the end going, āSo whatās next?ā I love to see what happens past the happy (or sometimes, not-so-happy) ending. There is so much to be told in what happens between a pairing when theyāre committed and figuring out how to be together, and I adore being able to showcase that, especially because itās not something you see as often as other tropes in fic.
6. Whatās your ideal space to write in?
I like writing in my room. Itās quiet, peaceful, my own space. Sometimes Iāll sit on my bed; other times, I like to kick back in my chair in the corner where my lights are hung - my little reading/writing/tv-watching nook - and Iāll prop my feet up on my ottoman and do some writing with a nice cup of tea. I like to be as relaxed as possible, so I can really let my mind wade through all the lines of dialogue and scenes that I want to write.
7.Ā What inspires you to write?
All sorts of things. For many years, it was music. I used to require music playing when I wrote, but I write in silence more often than not now. Still, music is a heavy inspiration for me - there are stories to find even in the songs that donāt seem like, lyrically, theyād provide any. But the mind is a powerful thing, and so is music, and when the two work together, magic tends to happen.
I also find inspiration in the world around me, and in the things I read. Iām a big fan of studying how people interact with one another. Relationships - familial, platonic, or romantic - are fascinating to me, and I love to write about how people react to the others around them, or the environment around them. I believe certain people and places come into your life exactly when theyāre meant to for reasons you may or may not understand at the time, but theyāre always important in your journey, and I love to write about that.
As a black woman, having the opportunity to continuously write about black women is also a huge inspiration for me, which is something youāll notice in looking at the original female characters I write. One of my favorite authors, Alyssa Cole, is a black woman who has written both historical and contemporary romances, and she floors me with every piece of hers that I read because the diversity she includes in every story is encompassing and feels effortless. She paints a picture of what our diverse world looks like or has looked like in the past with every novel or novella she writes, and she inspires me to use my words to share stories that feature black women of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds at the center because itās important to me to see incredible black women having their stories told. Alyssaās diversity doesnāt stop at just black characters, either, which is even more marvelous to me. Sheās a force to be reckoned with, and I always joke that I want to be her when I grow up, but letās be real, Iām not joking.
8. Do you typically like to listen to music when you write? If so, what do you listen to?
I inadvertently just answered this question! Back in my must-listen-to-music days, I would put Jason Reevesā The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (And Other Frightening Talesā¦) on repeat. That album in itself tells a story from start to finish of falling in love, being in love, getting your heart broken, and starting over, and there was something in the magic of Jasonās lyrics and musicality that used to wring endless sparks of inspiration from me. Whenever I felt stuck, I would turn that album on and the words would flow. Nowadays, I tend to find comfort in the quiet, but if a particular song or collection of songs has inspired something Iāve written, like Jon B. did with sangria on your lips, or SoMoās āFor Youā did with the one-shot of the same name, Iāll listen to whateverās inspiring me on repeat.
9. Do you have any plans for any future fic ideas youād like to pursue?
Nothing confirmed at the moment! If I could get those fics I have haunting me in my Google Docs to wander past small blurbs and vague plot ideas, thatād be wonderful. Iāll write fanfiction in this fandom as long as Iām inspired.
10. Do you have any advice for other writers in the fandom?
WRITE. FOR. YOU. Look at that again, read it over and over until itās ingrained deep in your mind and heart. Donāt write with the goal in mind to gain āxā number of readers, and donāt write to measure up to anyone else. We as writers are our own worst critics and conspiracy theorists, and we will come up with a hundred different reasons to stop writing when weāre discouraged or frustrated, or compare ourselves to others and consider them leagues above us. It is so easy to talk ourselves in circles of why we should quit because of whatever reasons weāve decided on in that precise moment, but you know what? If you write, you started for a reason. It gave you feelings youād never experienced before and wanted to chase so hard that they drove you to write something that came from your mind, your heart, your fingertips. Do you realize how extraordinary that is?
Nothing you write will ever mean much if you donāt write it for you. You canāt love to do this and pour your heart into your words if they arenāt ones that mean something to you. You are never going to please everyone that reads your writing, which is often a hard truth to swallow because we just want to be liked, and you will be by some! But itās important that you write something youāll be proud to attach your name to, because someone is going to be very pleased with it, but most importantly, you will be pleased with it. We grow and change as writers and so does our level of work, but looking back and cringing because maturity has made us better writers is not the same as looking back and cringing because what we wrote doesnāt reflect who weāve been at any stage. Write to satisfy yourself at whatever place in life youāre in. No regrets when you look back.
11. What is your writing process like?
It very much depends on the project! One-shots are my bread and butter, and those are often things I can write in a breeze when Iām inspired. My one-shots are usually the lengthy type, more of a short-story packed into a smaller package, so writing them tends to go smoothest for me.
For my chaptered projects, or the ones that started as one-shots and turned into stories or series, itās a slower process for me. I always have a general plot line and specific important moments in mind, but Iām not the outlining type at all - feels too stifling for me, and I like the freedom to adjust certain plot points when the process serves. If Iām full of inspiration and my life allows me the freedom to sit down and write away, I will! Iāve recently moved myself out of a life situation that was taking a lot of that creativity and peace of mind away from me, and Iām hoping to find my way back to some sort of constant stream of inspiration soon.
Author Specific:
1. Why would you say youāre more attuned to writing Liam and Niall out of all the boys? Would you ever write for Harry / Louis / Zayn?
Liam is the whole reason I wound up in this lovely mess. I became a fan of 1Dās music from the first album, but genuinely had no intention of going beyond that in terms of interest. Iād recently exited the Jonas Brothers fandom as a whole because the cattiness and pettiness of some fans was absolutely exhausting and I needed a break from fandom for a good while (or so I thought, as I eventually found myself neck-deep in the Big Time Rush fandom). Around 2013, though, Liamās vocals, smile, and stage presence had me slowly turning into the eye emoji. And those who have known me for quite a while can probably recall the night in 2015 where I drank a lot of wine and looked at a lot of pictures of him on Tumblr and became a complete goner.
It took me a little bit to start writing about him, however. Iād been reading some 1D fic because a dear friend Iād met through JBFA had moved to writing 1D fic and I once told her Iād read Magic School Bus fanfiction if she wrote it, so I obviously followed her to 1DFF. As I became more interested in Liam, I started reading some Liam fics, trying to get a hang on his personality because at the time I wrote mainly OU and I love finding that authenticity. I also wanted to get a feel for writing characters who werenāt American, like I am. Eventually, I came up with some ideas, decided to get my feet wet, and started writing. I would say Iām attuned to writing Liam because in learning about him, I connected with him. I adore him as a person and an artist, and hardly anyone writes about him these days (which breaks my heart), so I continue to because he makes me happy and we could all use a little more Liam-centric stories in our lives.
As for Niall, I was blown away by the leaps and bounds of the growth of his vocal talent on Made in the A.M. He really shined on those songs for me, and when his solo career started rolling, I was mesmerized by the way he was going about it. Very deliberate with his choices, taking his time, warming everyone up to the magic heād been possessing for years. I was floored by his magnetism both as a person and an artist, and it drew me to write about him. While it was completely unexpected because Iād been gone for Liam for quite some time, I donāt regret a single minute of it.
I would absolutely write for Harry, Zayn, or Louis if a story idea struck me. I actually started a Harry story that I stalled with big time because I scared myself out of confidence with the massiveness of writing a story with supernatural elements, but hey, maybe someday!
2. What is one moment from āRegarding Our Ghostsā that you never got to write but want to?
ROG, my OG baby! Iām unbelievably heartbroken that I havenāt been able to finish that fic, because it was a passion project, but it always holds such a solid place in my heart.
In the story, Liam and Lissie were meant to travel home to the UK to visit family for the winter holidays, while Nina and Macy went to see her mother, Noreen, for a few days around Christmas. Over the course of their time apart, I wanted to show how integrated their lives had started to become, with Lissie insisting that she and Liam buy presents for Macy and Nina to give when they returned, and Noreen inquiring after the father-and-daughter pair that Macy couldnāt stop talking about during their visit.
Once Liam returned, he was to drop by Ninaās to catch up with her and see if she needed some help with shoveling snow from the drive. There was a moment in which they laughed and joked and Liamās laughter made Nina realize how much sheād missed him and it absolutely terrified her because she didnāt have the capacity to put a name to that feeling just yet. Thereās a little snippet I wrote on an index card at the place where I used to tutor because it struck me mid-lesson, and I carried that index card in my wallet for years. It went:
He laughs, and ohāoh. His laugh. She missed his laugh. She missed this. She missed Liam.
The feeling settles low in the pit of her stomach, goopy and sweet, and she doesnāt know what to make of it. In her mind, there are little compartments where she sorts out her thoughts and emotions, and as she tries to sort thisāthat she missed Liamāshe canāt. She doesnāt know where to put it.
So she lets it churn in her gut, thickening like a rue, until she can make up her mind.
It was such an important moment for them - a turning point, for Nina at least, realizing that this man she and her daughter had come to rely on in certain ways could be more than just a friend to her. That her feelings could be stronger, and she could maybe feel something for someone again after convincing herself sheād be happy alone if thatās what was meant for her.
Man, I miss that story something fierce, but it stays with me every day.
3. What is one thing you wish you wouldāve known before you started writing 1d fic?
That I would get in this deep. Ha. No, honestly, Iām glad that I didnāt have any expectations going in. Thatās the best. You learn as you go. Similar to my time writing Jonas Brothers fic, Iāve built some pretty great friendships that I never would have if I hadnāt started writing 1D fic. I even made connections with people who read my Jonas Brothers fanfics but weād never spoken until I started reading and writing 1D fic!
Iām grateful for the people this has brought into my life, and the opportunity Iāve had to go into this fandom and spend more time honing my craft and getting to shine a light on people of color in my stories, black women specifically. We are so often missing from fiction and that is true from the fanfiction world to the romance novels I read, but our stories are so important and real and as needed as everyone elseās, so I am excited beyond belief that Iāve been able to create several black female characters that have reached out and touched readers of all kinds. Iāve also been able to connect to other authors of color who, like me, write about people who look and think and live like them, and the sense of being seen as a person of color is overwhelming. I hope to see more of it in the future.
4. Who has been your favorite OFC to write? Why?
Iām gonna cheat a bit here because itās a three-way toss-up between Georgia, Rolly, and Teyana.
Georgia means the world to me because in my previous fandom, I wrote a lot of white OFCs because that was just...what I saw and experienced, and to be honest, I didnāt really think about it much at first. Writing white characters was the ānormā. After a while, I noticed that in seeking out characters who looked like me, I encountered a lot of storylines that featured racism as a conflict between x Jonas Brotherās family and the OFC. It was hard to find stories in which characters were just human beings who happened to be black and faced conflict that had nothing to do with their race. So, I decided to write a story in which that was the case. It opened up my eyes to what Iād been failing to focus on, something that became super important to me the more I reflected on it: seeing black characters represented realistically and in a positive light in fanfiction.
When I eventually came to write 1D fic, I made a very conscious choice to feature black women at the center of my stories, and Georgia was the first. Through her, I was able to show a successful black woman who had started a family with the man she loved, and I was able to showcase little moments of Georgiaās experiences as a black woman that Liam had to learn about, like why she wrapped her hair at night. It sounds like such a small thing, but that was big for me - I couldnāt recall ever seeing that in the writing Iād read thus far, a black woman wrapping her hair at night, so I wrote it. Soon, I had readers coming to me who could relate and said they hadnāt seen it, either. Iāve also had non-black readers who have expressed how much they like the fact that I write about black women, that they enjoy reading stories that focus on people of color. The whole experience has been so moving for me. Ā Itās made me realize that I am not only doing something I love, but also doing something important.
Rolly Marshall is, in many ways, a reflection of me. I conjured her up when I was a few months into my first year of teaching and overwhelmed, tired, and frustrated beyond belief. She was an escape. I could channel all of the things I loved and dreaded about my job into her and her life, and it was like lifting a weight off my shoulders. Rolly loves her job, like I did, but her experience was one that I created to be more positive than the one I experienced, which has made it both easy and hard to write about her at times. But more than our mutual connection through education, I love Rolly because she feels so genuine to me. Sheās awkward and kind-hearted and funny and a good friend to the people in her life. Sheās just a good egg. I love her spirit and her humor and thatās a big part of whatās made her such a joy to write. I didnāt expect many people to latch on to her because how many people could really relate to a second grade teacher? To my great surprise, many.
Teyana surprised me with my attachment to her. She and Niall were meant to be a one-time thing, much like Liam and Georgia, but seeing as how those two turned into an eighteen-part thing PLUS a throwback mini-fic, I shouldāve known better. It was while I was writing sangria on your lips that I found myself thinking about who Teyana was before she and Niall met. I couldnāt stop thinking about where she came from, building her past. She comes from a single parent home where her father raised her after her mom left. She carries scars from that, from the abandonment she felt when her mom moved on without so much as a single moment to look back. She clung to her Papi and his Cuban culture and grew up with the lessons he instilled in her, including one she taught herself from watching his heart break: that maybe there was no great āoneā for her. But that changes when she meets Niall, who challenges everything she thought she could gain from a relationship. Heās truly a partner to her. He has a glimpse into what life is like when your parents arenāt together anymore, so heās empathetic to what she feels in regards to her mom. He loves her unconditionally. Heās her match, and after years of convincing herself she may never find her match and sheāll be okay with that, Niall is a pleasant surprise, and honestly, he restores her faith in love. She learns she doesnāt need anyone else to make her life complete - her Papi raised her to find that completion all on her own - but having someone to share her life with is a pleasure sheās more than grateful to have.
5. Which one of your fic boys was your favorite to write? Why?
Different Strokes Liam has been my all-time favorite. Heās driven and passionate about his work, completely committed to his family, and thereās a warmth, humor, and sexiness to him that has made him so much fun to write since I began. I love that I can paint him as a complete and utter sop in one piece, a classic romantic in another, and a confident master of seduction in the next. Heās confident and often sure of himself but not immune to insecurities. Heās got different facets, and I love getting to focus on each one at different times as the series shifts.
The Different Strokes series was something that spawned from what was supposed to be a stand-alone one-shot, but I found myself attached to the little family I built for Liam, Georgia, and their son Carter, and my mind expanded upon writing little snippets of them - glimpses of them as Carter grew, as their lives changed, as their family expanded. I am a big fan of established relationships, and I grew so attached to watching Liam mature and change as both a father and a husband. Liam in real life seems to have such a compassionate heart, and before he even became a father, I had a good feeling that he would be a great one and getting to write about him as both a father to his children and a partner to his wife has been such a joy. And with Checkpoints, my mini-fic in the series, Iāve been able to go back to when he and Georgia first met and began seeing each other and itās been nothing but fun to write!
If not for DS Liam, I wouldnāt have fallen as in love with writing 1D fic as I have, so I am grateful every day for the opportunity Iāve had to expand upon his character and the incredible life heās built for himself. Writing him has led to writing many other projects that I adore, and I canāt wait to see whatās next for me as a writer.

The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited! ā Review

by Clint McElroy, Justin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Griffin McElroy & Carey Pietsch 2019, First Second Books Paperback, 240 pages, $25.99 CAD

Good: Character development, worldbuilding, excellent art Bad: Constrictive narrative, on-rails narrative
Since I spent far too much time on analyzing the podcast in my analysis of The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins, I will do my best to focus solely on the contents of The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited! this time around. The second arc of The Adventure Zone podcast isnāt something that made that much of an impact on me. I was still in the process of acclimating to the format and the McElroysā storytelling style. While the Rockport Limited arc remains a favourite for many fansādue in part, Iām sure, to the introduction of fan favourites like Angus, Jenkins and JessāI found the arc rough around the edges. Griffin was doing his best to create something new instead of relying on pre-written campaigns, while the rest of his family was still getting a handle on what their characters were and how they interacted with the world. Thankfully, some of this was smoothed out for the graphic novel. Perhaps thanks to improved writing or Carey Pietschās talents, I found the world much more cohesive and interesting than in Here There Be Gerblins, and I appreciated that the McElroys cut back on jokes and pop culture references. This helped to elevate Murder on the Rockport Limited! to a higher level of quality than its predecessor, though if I have one complaint, itās that the events in the book feel too restrictive. Itās as if the characters have no agency of their own, being forced down the path laid out for them.
Though, itās possible that a tighter, less expansive narrative is to be expected for Murder on the Rockport Limited!, for two key reasons:
Griffin ran the campaign on railsāand not just because itās on a train.
I am familiar with the source material.
The first reason is a product of the format and the anxieties that the McElroys faced when embarking seriously on this podcast venture. They didnāt stray far from what Griffin had planned, and actively followed his story prompts in an effort to build a cohesive storyline. I canāt fault them for it; itās to be expected that the graphic novelās plot would be similarly unidirectional in order for it to be faithful to the source material. It makes me wonder whether or not my familiarity with said source material is the primary reason I felt the plot wasnāt fleshed out. Iād be interested to see what someone uninitiated in the podcast would feel regarding the novelās plotting. Though, some elements in the novel seem to indicate that the McElroys intended to keep the story on rails, with the itinerary provided to the main cast at the Bureau of Balance being a good example of this. Itās also difficult for me to determine whether the storyās mystery elements were well adapted, given that I already knew the conclusion. Iād like to make it clear that I have a difficult time really considering any of these deal breakers; I find myself constantly flip-flopping on whether or not my criticisms really matter here. I enjoyed Murder on the Rockport Limited! immensely despite my concerns, so I feel like that whatever flaws Iāve noticed should be taken with a grain of salt.
The main takeaway from my analysis of Here There Be Gerblins is that The Adventure Zone podcast has many different āLevelsā to it, but only a few of these levels translate well to print. I argued that the Narrative Level was the most important to the success of the podcastāand by extensionāshould be the focus for the graphic novels. I donāt have enough hubris to think my thoughts came into play when the McElroys wrote this second volume, but it seems that they did improve in this regardāe.g. they toned down the amount of goofs and pop culture references in favour of developing the narrative. In fact, we barely see Griffin as the Dungeon Masterāto the point I forgot he was a character in this volume seeing as he was absent for nearly half of it. This made the experience a lot tighter, allowing the reader to focus on whatās going on, rather than having the comic book equivalent of cutaways every few panels. While jokes and pop culture references are fun, they shouldnāt come at the expense of building an engaging narrative. Though, I was surprised by an increase in fanservice. Where the previous novel made only a few retcons, Murder on the Rockport Limited! goes into overdrive, to the point that Iām ready to change my mind on whether any these changes were actually made to appease fans, or if they were included to make the world richer and more cohesive.
A good example of this is in Jessā established role as a wrestler within the world and Magnusā awareness of her career. At first, I thought this was a simple reference to the one-shot live show, but as other elements were introducedālike the developing friendship between Magnus, Taako and Merle, or Lucretiaās tormentāIām more inclined to think these changes are intended to flesh out the world, rather than just existing as fanservice. I donāt doubt that fan interaction has helped shaped the world over the years, but I no longer think that the McElroys are including these details to satisfy fans. The novel is certainly better for it. That isnāt to say there isnāt any pure fanservice; one of my favourite scenes is the Scuttle Buddy mini-advertisement, which was just a cute little distraction from the main plot In any case, I think the McElroys struck the perfect balance in this volume between keeping things fun and lighthearted, and ensuring the narrative takes centre focus.
I donāt think I can express enough how perfect a pick Pietsch is as the artist for these graphic novels. Her drawings have an inherit energy to them. They are fast and loose, never too pristine and just the right amount of scraggy. Her colours are appealing, being just cartoony enough for the story being told. Her expressions continue to be her greatest strength, adding layers to an already colourful cast. She also continues to excel at bringing the world around the main cast to life. Every location feels real, allowing us to slowly learn what kind of world this is through her illustrations. Much like in the first volume, my favourite scenes are her establishing shots with huge crowds fantasy people, all of them just as expressive and lively as any of the main cast.
The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited! feels a lot tighter than its predecessor, and part of me wonders if the arcās more complex narrative forced the McElroys to narrow their focus, or if they simple realized the narrative should be the most important element going forward. I imagine itāll become harder and harder to include everything that happens between now and the end of the podcast, considering how much more expansive the story got over time. I think regardless of their intent, itāll be increasingly important for the McElroys to focus on narrative and character development. That doesnāt mean we should lose the fun, but I am entirely convinced that great characters and meaningful narrative are at the heart of what made the podcast so special to so many people. In any case, itās an improvement over Here There Be Gerblins, and I hope to see the McElroys continue along this trend in future volumes of The Adventure Zoneās graphic novel adaptation.

I donāt know what to expect from IX. Iām really hoping it is endgame and they donāt just drop the romance angle, but itās also kind of what Iām expecting? Like I donāt expect follow-through from it, even though I would love it if it happened
Hi Nonnie,Ā
I totally get it. I understand that completely. Do I think itās endgame? Yes.Ā
However am I going into IX with any expectations? NOPE. Iām a fandom granny. No seriously I have lived through so many fandoms that I simply go in with no expectations. That way if what I think might happen if even in some small way happens then I will be super happy and overjoyed and if it doesnāt I am usually able to divorce myself from my disappointment and respect the creatorās vision.
As a writer and someone who was professionally trained to do so, I know that creators have a vision. They have an endgame in mind. And they drop breadcrumbs about it from the beginning and if youāre clever enough to see them you usually can figure out any story.Ā
This is why I ruin police procedurals for my mom. My dad and I made a game of it watching Law and Order as a kid growing up (and I mean OG Law and Order with Det. Lenny Briscoe). Whomever could figure out who committed the murder first won. We used to keep a running tally. My dad was really good at it, but when I got really into reading and started reading mystery novels and horror novels and other stories that rely heavily on mystery boxes I started getting better at it. We also watched Law and Order because my two actor 2nd cousins have been guest stars as defense lawyers idk how many times but thatās neither here nor there.
And tbh ESBās twist of Vader as Lukeās father came as such a shock because IDK if even Lucas really knew he was going to do it until he did it. Luckily the story was vague enough in ANH that a throw away line about certain points of view was enough to close what could have been a crippling plot hole.Ā
My mom is an OG Star wars fan. Mostly bc she loves the pew pew and the lightsaber battles, and secondly because Harrison Ford is a very handsome and talented man (tbh my first crush was Han Solo and second was Indy).
My mom was there when everyone was UP IN ARMS about Leia and Luke kissing. And how that was SOOOOOO going to be endgame. Which originally Lucas had intended that Leia would be a love interest for Luke and that the twin sister would be revealed in 7, 8 and 9 someday. However during writing ROTJ and filming ESB he decided to really hone in on Leia and Hanās chemistry (granted Irving was directing then) but he made the narrative choice to make Leia the sister and Han her love interest. It simultaneously elevated Leiaās narrative importance and made her the leading lady of her own story on equal footing to her equally powerful twin brother instead of just being Lukeās sidekick love interest.
Even when I was a KID and I saw ESB it always kind of made me laugh that Leiaās response to Han goading her about liking him was to smack lips with the only other humanoid male in the room just to prove how NOT smitten she was with Han. (AND if that doesnāt make her simultaneously Padme and Anakinās child I donāt know what will convince you otherwise).
TPM came out when was was 13 and a half which will be 20 yrs ago next May - HOLY FUCK. And Iāve been an avid reader since I could read so I had gobbled up countless numbers of books by then. I was in the theater with my parents and legit held my hand up over Ianās eyes and gasped and tugged on my momās sleeve.Ā
āMom thatās THE EMPERORā and she was likeĀ āNo honey heās just a senator whoās now chancellor of the republicā
And this was still in the age of Dial-up internet and no IMDB. So I did my own digging and found our VHS copies of the OT and looked at the cast listing at the end of the movie. And saw the same name playing the Emperor as the man playing Senator-Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. Now the movies in the OT never actually say the Emperorās real name. Heās just the shadowy, scary Emperor with lightning bolts shooting out of his hands. So like we knew in TPM that Palpy was going to become the emperor. Now say what you will about the Prequels but Lucas did do a fair bit of narrative arc planning with it than what he threw together with the OT.Ā
He knew we had to meet Anakin as a boy, see him as a caring and compassionate individual who is uniquely gifted in the Force. And that had circumstances been different he would have probably been the paragon force sensitive and balanced the force. However due to realistic flaws of all characters, good and bad alike, including flaws within Anakinās character himself he falls prey to the darkside and itās temptations and then becomes the very thing he feared.
Tbh next to TLJ, ROTS is right up there with ESB as my favorite in the saga. Sure the dialogue is wooden and clunky. Lucas is not a dialogue director. Heās a vision director. He has a scene in his mind, and he wants it played like that. Which is fine. He also came from a school of thought in the 1970s where sci-fi was pure camp and overdramatic. His style never really changed. The OT is so lauded because he didnāt direct all of them. He had other people come in and he had script doctoring and his first wife in the editing room taking his vision and turning it into a cohesive narrative. We seem to forget that Lucas was a young dude right out of film school when he made ANH. He barely knew how to string a narrative together and the early cuts of ANH were terrible and nowhere near what people saw in the theater. Donāt believe me? GoogleĀ āhow star wars was saved in the editing roomā itās a remarkable story about how Lucasās first wife and principal editor basically made ANH into an actual story instead of a mish mash of ideas that it was before. The prequels had Lucas at the helm for all three. Yes by then he had gotten a hold of narratively what he wanted to convey, but he still didnāt always convey it in the most efficient ways.
But there are moments in the prequels that Iām stunned by their perfection.Ā āThis is how liberty dies? With thunderous applause.ā as Padme watches in horror as the Republic becomes an empire before her eyes. Itās perfect to convey the horror she feels and her disgust at what the thing sheās fought for so long to just crumble and slip away.Ā
Or the entirety of the Anakin v. Obi Wan Mustafar battle. Visually STUNNING, and heartbreaking. You can feel how much neither of them want to fight the other but how they both are so entrenched in their now opposite ideologies that they know they have to fight.Ā
Iāve also been a fan of JJās for a long time.Ā
Sure he loves mystery boxes but he usually makes the answer SO obvious that most people ignore it.Ā
Like on Lost which I never actually watched save for maybe a few episodes, itās pretty clear that something metaphysical is going on in that island with the crash. And there are clues dating back to the pilot as to what happened in the finale.Ā
In TFA weāre introduced to Rey. Weāre given a mystery box of who is Rey and why is she important and who is her family. But weāre also given the answer. Sheās no one. And thatās why sheās important. She is no one. She doesnāt need to have this huge galactic sized legacy on her shoulders to be important, to be special. SHE IS NO ONE. And thatās why the Force chose her as its vessel.Ā
Reason why is that sheās narratively the perfect foil for her counterpart Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. He has all that legacy and weight on his shoulders. Theyāre equals in power in strength, in light and darkness. They are complete equals. And TFA was all about establishing that fact. Now TLJ was all about deepening that initial connection. To get them both to scratch beneath the surface of one another, and get under one anotherās skin. In doing so Ben learned that Rey just wants to belong, to be loved and have a place in the galaxy. And Rey, she learned that Ben is just as lonely, but has rejected his birthright because he felt rejected and abandoned by those who should have unconditionally loved and protected him from Snoke (which granted OT Trio tried but they def didnāt have great parenting examples either sooooo).
Now as an adult Ben is bitter, full of resentment and rage because the people he should have been able to count on fucked up royally. And I love that. I resonate with it because of my own experiences as an abuse survivor too. But even more so because it makes Han, Leia and Luke less perfect legends and more human. It makes them real and relatable that they tried to do everything right by their kiddo but ended up fucking him up.Ā Lukeās betrayal itself was the least shocking part of TLJ tbh. Like does no one remember him going ABSOLUTELY banana balls insane when Vader threatened Leia in ROTJ?
That kind of Skywalker level extra doesnāt just go away with age.Ā
And yeah Ben needed someone in the fam to be likeĀ āso kid, um, lets talk about this.ā No one in the OT Trio is good at talking about their feelings. Luke tries to control his by just not dealing with it - the kind of thing youād expect from a āpray the depression awayā type. Leia ignores it and bottles that shit until it comes out as thinly veiled anger. And Han is the most ridiculous of the three with his constant hot and cold routine throughout ESB.
The ST is yes about the failures of the OT trio, the failures of the Jedi and the Sith. But itās also a story about the force and itās two chosen vessels. A girl from nowhere and the last scion of the Skywalker line. The fact that their connections in TLJ are coded as sexual awakenings is very indicative of where I think this is all going to go. The Force is basically the Skywalker Patriarch if weāre going on the whole immaculate conception with Shmi. And Ben fell from his path for years now thanks to the other Skywalkers falling from the path and inadvertently pushing him down the rabbit hole with Snoke, manipulating everything like a master of puppets.Ā
JJ himself even said he was upset that he didnāt get to direct TLJ because he loved Rianās script so much.Ā
I have faith weāre going to get a hell of a finish to the 9 film Skywalker saga. With Reylo as endgame or not I think weāre going to get something truly satisfying that links all 9 movies together in a way that will have meta writers writing for years to come about all the parallels and thematic Leitmotifs within the narrative as a whole that encompasses technically 4 generations of Skywalkers (Shmi, Anakin, Luke/Leia, and Ben).
When Ben killed Han in TFA and you get that focused in shot of Adamās face as the weight of what he just did HITS him and his eyes widen and his lips part, you see the exact moment he shatters his soul realizing that he just seriously fucked up. I leaned over to my best friend that night in the midnight showing and saidĀ ādo you smell redemption arc?ā and Iāve been on that train from day one.Ā
If he were truly irredeemable he wouldnāt have split his spirit to the bone by killing his father. He wouldnāt have cared to try to convince Rey to be her teacher in the middle of their battle. He wouldnāt care that Rey stares at him like she did that night and call him a monster. A real monster wouldnāt care at being called one. And is so very shook and pained by that moniker with his lower lip quiver and his eyes red rimmed. If he were truly irredeemable he wouldnāt have killed his master just to save the girl, heād have just usurped power and shrugged her off instead of trying to convince her to stay with him. He wouldnāt have addressed her fear and insecurity of being nothing and no one while shaking his head and sayingĀ ābut not to meā. If he were truly a monster he would have pulled the damn trigger when his had the bridge of the Raddus in his sights but couldnāt because he felt his motherās love for him even after everything heās done.
Has he done terrible things? YES. He definitely has. But he has the equal potential for amazing things as much as he has for the terrible things heās done. And I for one will be happy to see him begin to even slightly embrace that potential by the end of ep 9. Reylo or no Reylo Iām sure Iām going to be happy with ep 9. Thereās no way Adam and so many other brilliant actors would have signed on without at least knowing where this is all gonna go. Adam himself was hesitant to take on the burden of SW but was convinced to do so because of the complexity of Benās character. That to me says weāre getting something amazing in ep9. And I canāt wait.

Superhero Spotlight: MCU Post Phase 3
With all this talk about ideas and hopes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers 4Ā wraps up the first 11 years of said universe, I am slightly concerned as to whether or not anyone has actually sat down with Kevin Feige and saidĀ āSeriously, what are we doing after 2019?ā because so far the talk is about how Avengers 4Ā is going to be the last hurrah for our original Avengers from Phase 1, with a possible exception, and also the arrival of the X-Men and Fantastic 4 now Disney has bought Fox.
So I thought i would offer some realistic suggestions for where the MCU can go post Phase 3 and where I think it should go both to keep the universe fresh after it potentially rotates the Avengers team roster and also now Feige has double if not triple the toys.
Whatās Coming:
So what we know as confirmed movies for the MCU going forward is that hotly anticipated Captain MarvelĀ movie, Avengers 4Ā which will end Phase 3 and potentially an era of the MCU and the start of Phase 4 which will be Spider-Man: Far From HomeĀ all scheduled for release in 2019.
I have to say just that year of movies itself makes me excited both as a Marvel fan and movie goer because people are buzzing over finally seeing Carol Danvers join the MCU, obviously everyone wants to know the final fates of most of the MCU characters post-Infinity War which includes Peter Parker and also his sequel will introduce Jake Gyllenhall as Mysterio.
However, after 2019, due to problems that have faced Disney this summer with firing James Gunn, no confirmed dates are on the cards post-2019. Guardians 3 is still on the table but its release date has been pushed back. This means that, unless Feige pulls an ace out of his sleeve rather quickly with either a surprise announcement or a distraction, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not have any slots in 2020 which will be a huge loss for Disney considering theyāve striven to have up to 3 Marvel movies a year for years, thatās been their formula for practically the 10 years.
Whatās Most Likely:
Now as fans of the MCU have come to realise, Kevin Feige likes to keep things simple...even if it means not faithful to the source material. This hit home for me with Ultron and how he was created by Tony Stark rather than Hank Pym. Simple because they already had Tony Stark established, not faithful because Ultron is possibly one of Hank Pymās greatest storylines and they gave it to RDJ.
The other thing to consider when understanding Feigeās mindset at the moment, is that he is in the centre of a major s&*tstorm right now. Not only with the fact he has had to put Guardians of the Galaxy 3Ā on hold until he can find a new director due to this past summer of trouble with James Gunn, but also with the fact one or two vocal members of the Guardians cast, Bautista especially, are being brutally honest about not trusting Feige or Disney anymore. So Feige I imagine will strive to keep his creative decisions as simple as possible while also pulling some major damage control to try and keep both actors and fans happy.
I did an entire post on how I think he could fix his Guardians problem with introducing the Asgardians of the Galaxy, however if he doesnāt choose to go down that route and they do bring out Guardians 3 as scheduled, then I have a way to create a positive media buzz around the film.

A b-storyline in Guardians 3 could be rebuilding the Nova Corps, which was destroyed along with Xandar in Avengers: Infinity WarĀ by Thanos in order to acquire the Power Stone. So to recreate the Corps, howĀ about bringing in the original Nova - Richard Rider Ā Now just listen to this set up: āWhen the last surviving member of the planet Xandar's elite Nova Corps, Rhomann Dey, is dying, he selects New York high school student Richard Rider to replace him.ā Firstly, Rhomann Dey has already been introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy portrayed by John C. Reilly, he only needs to appear as a cameo or flashback on how Nova was chosen. Not forgetting Thanos, off-screen, ravaged Xandar to acquire the Power Stone leaving the fates of the Nova Corps unknown, so what a perfect set-up for Guardians 3 or even Avengers 4 to introduce a young Richard Rider. If they wanted to retcon him slightly he could even go to the same high school as Peter Parker. But to be contemporaries with the other Guardians I think Feige will be best to cast in a similar age to Pratt and maybe show his origin in a Nova movie.
Bringing in the Mutants:

Another suggestion and possibly a more realistic option for Feige is to introduce the X-Men. They have of course been hotly anticipated to join the big leagues for years, and now they are owned by the Mouse House itās just a question of when and how theyāll debut.
I have doe a Fan-Casting Frenzy post where I make suggestions for the MCUās version of the Brotherhood of MutantsĀ because a YouTube channel I watch has already appropriately cast the MCUās X-Men team. But while I think an X-Men team movie potentially with the Brotherhood as the villains is inevitable, I do believe introducing individual X-Men members first to tease the movie is the way to go. Not only will it save us as fans having to meet an entire team of characters at once but, as Feige is known for, itās a great way for fans to have their favourites going in.
I personally feel, like most, that Storm should definitely appear in aĀ Black Panther sequel. Itās just too perfect to not happen! Not only is Ororo Munroe the wife of King TāChalla in the comics but also it would create hopefully an interesting love-triangle between the already established TāChalla and Nakia. Lupita Nāyongo is someone everyone wanted to see play Storm and I still feel she would have been perfect for the role, but now sheās settled for the girl that needs a copy of Heās Just Not That Into YouĀ when Storm flies onto the scene, also yes make the Weather Witch fly for goodness sake! Two simple character traits; she has to fly and actually be African, and Ryan Coogler did a spectacular job honoring African culture with the first Black PantherĀ movie, so surely he is the right person to bring Storm into the MCU.

Another place to introduce more X-Men members is in that hopeful Doctor StrangeĀ sequel. Both TāChalla and Stephen Strange are hot commodities for the MCU currently not only being part of the new wave of heroes to take centre stage after Phase 3, but also starring in solo movies that were highly successful with both critics and fans. Also with a Doctor StrangeĀ sequel, the two most logical ways to go with the story are either a House of M retelling which would see Scarlet Witch appear in the sequel, but the other way is Doctor Strange: IlluminatiĀ which could see him become one of the founding members of the secret government that works behind the scenes. The team also includes Iron Man as well as Professor X, Mister Fantastic and Namor. The latter three of which are now owned by Disney from Fox.
I am not saying a Doctor StrangeĀ sequel is the best place to introduce three characters, but if they donāt focus on them in terms of major character development and simply focus on the fact they are in the MCU and will be developed in future movies it could be a great introduction.
Fantastic Four:

Speaking of Mister Fantastic, introducing Marvelās First Family would be a logical suggestion for the MCU due to the fact Disney has found storming success with Pixarās IncrediblesĀ franchise. Yes they have co-morbidity in their powers but the Fantastic 4 did come first.
There however lies the problem Feige may face, being compared to the Incredibles. Yes there is a different family dynamic with the Richards-Storm-Grimm set-up to the Parrs, but there is no reason to say that a CGI and live-action version cannot co-exist. If anything I think the Fantastic 4 can learn from the Incredibles particularly with what to do with Mister Fantastic. The trick is not falling into the same trap as what has come before in attempts.
A-Force:

An idea that has been batted around a lot recently is an all female Avengers movie, logically speaking this would mean A-Force. While every female hero in Marvel seems to have been a part of the team in the comics. It makes sense in the MCU to have a team comprised of the already established female heroes, along with Captain Marvel who could easily lead the team. Weāre talking Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, The Wasp, Nebula, Captain Marvel, potentially Gamora and maybe Okoye & Valkyrie. Thatās eight female members already established. With the potential additions of Storm, Jean Grey and Rogue from the X-Men and even Sue Storm from the Fantastic Four and you have a full roster. I do not think Jessica Jones, Elektra and Quake will be elevated from their TV serials but to be fair I think those 12 are more than enough.
Young Avengers:

One suggestion I will always favour is the teenageĀ āsidekicksā to the Avengers. This team would either make a great movie or Netflix series and definitely show up DCās upcoming TitansĀ series.
As a purist obviously I want to keep to the founding members, as such the team should be comprised of Nate Richards aka Iron Lad, Eli Bradley aka Patriot, Billy Kaplan & Teddy Altman aka Wiccan and Hulkling, Kate Bishop aka Hawkeye, Cassie Lang aka Stature, Vision 2.0. and Tommy Shepherd aka Speed. That is the main line-up of the original team.
Now I would say to stick with the original team because the current team does not have Cassie Lang and so far she is the only member established in the MCU. However, the later incarnation of the team is more racially diverse so maybe they can be brought in at a later date.

Wiccan and Speed are the twin sons created by Scarlet Witch, Hulkling is the son of Mar-Vell and a Skrull princess both of whom will most likely appear in the upcoming Captain Marvel. Others can easily be introduced either in a film or TV series.
But when thinking about the storylines; you have Wiccan and Hulking who would be the first openly LGBT characters the MCU has but also teenage gay characters hopefully in a realistic portrayal of a homosexual relationship, Patriot does kind of represent teenage substance abuse, thereās the family dramas with both Wiccan & Speed but also Stature and how Scott Lang feels about his daughter being a superhero not to mention Hulkling discovering his true heritage and maybe contributing to the Kree-Skull war that could be shown starting in Captain Marvel. Not to mention the first Young AvengersĀ story which sees them face off against Kang the Conqueror who in the comics is most likely a descendant of Reed Richards. Numerous possibilities.
Nuhumans:

My final suggestion is a way to firmly solidify the connection between the Movies and TV Shows by introducing the newest generation of Inhumans, known as Nuhumans, in a movie and then giving them their own TV series possibly on Netflix or on Disneyās new streaming service.
Firstly the Nuhumans are mostly credited for introducing the new Ms. Marvel, who not only has gone on to join the Avengers but also could very easily become the new heart of the MCU.
Now the team could easily be led by Daisy Johnson aka Quake and would be a way to keep Chloe Bennett around or get her away from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Ā as I do not see much more longevity in that series. But because she is a TV actress primarily, it could work for her to appear in one movie and then go back to television just with a bigger budget for her Quake powers and costuming.
The movie could introduce Ms. Marvel, Inferno, Moon Girl, Blizzard and Ana Kravinoff to the movies. In essence they are all teenagers and yes I do have a preference for bringing in a younger generation of heroes to the MCU post Phase 3 but I do think this opening line-up could not only form a good team but also a solid fanbase.
Some die-hard comic book fans may notice that Blizzard has already been introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Ā portrayed by Dylan Minnette...well yes he has but has since gone on to form his own fan-base in both 13 Reasons WhyĀ and 2015ā²s GoosebumpsĀ as well as being in an Indie Rock band. Blizzard aka Donnie Gill was treated more as a mutate than an Inhuman but after his final fate in the TV series saw him frozen in the water leaving his ultimate fate unknown and these Nuhumans emerged from a water contaminate outbreak, it makes sense that Quake, who has a history with Donnie, either finds him or he finds her and becomes the troubled student of the team maybe along with Ana who is Kraven the Hunterās daughter.

All the characters suggested would be great to see portrayed but my hotly anticipated pick is Moon Girl for the pure and simple reason that I feel sheād be a great start for an up and coming child actress considering in the comics she is supposed to be 9 years old. She should also be accompanied by her dino sidekick Devil Dinosaur.
It could also be a wonderfully diverse cast of characters if cast regionally appropriate; we already have Quake portrayed by Chloe Bennet both of whom are of Chinese descent. Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel is Pakistani American so finding a teenager or young adult actress of that heritage would be brilliant, Ana Kravinoff, like her father Kraven, is Russian, Moon Girl is African-American and Inferno is Latino-American.
In case anyone is wondering why Iām not trying to introduce the Inhuman Royal Family into the movies, Marvel already tried that and the result was a rather horrendous TV series whose cancellation was dragged out unintentionally. Yes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Ā introduced Inhumans into the MCU in their Season 2, but to get the real experience of Inhuman powers you need a higher budget that a movie or maybe this new streaming service can provide.
I am not saying the Royals canāt be in this film/series, in fact if they want to either retcon or recast the series I would be happy with that. I would love to see Medusa done right and who doesnāt love Lockjaw? But in terms of where the MCU is going I feel a younger more current generation is the key.
So those are my suggestions for where the MCU should be headed post Phase 3, what do you guys think? Are you wanting to see the Inhumans done right? Do you think Chloe Bennet should make the jump from TV to film? Is a younger generation of heroes the way to go? Are the former Fox-owned properties the MCUās best hope? How would you feel if Guardians of the Galaxy 3 did not focus on the current team we have?
