finally put to paper how i imagine them

Peeta Mellark’s role in the rebellion is often undervalued, cast as the emotional foil to Katniss’s pragmatism or Gale’s radicalism on here. But this view overlooks the strategic depth of his resistance. Peeta’s defiance isn’t loud or violent—it’s rooted in emotional autonomy, which, in a system built on fear and control, is very subversive. From the start, Peeta challenges the Capitol’s values. Giving bread to Katniss at risk of punishment. Confessing his love on television before the Games. Choosing connection over self-preservation in a system designed to strip people down to their most primal instincts. He reframes their story from bloodsport to tragic romance, challenging the entire premise on which The Games operate, that when it comes to survival, people become no better than animals.

But he retains his humanity and exercises emotional autonomy by refusing to play along with what the Capitol expects from every tribute— to fight for their lives while disregarding everything else. In doing so, he forces the Capitol audience to see them as human beings, not just district savages killing each other for entertainment. And if I see anyone undervaluing his contributions or portraying him as dead weight, or as someone whose role in the rebellion was coincidental or anything less than deliberate, I’m going to scream.

generally i see the opinion that movie!katniss mainly felt different because her inner monologue was missing but i feel like that couldn't be further from the truth. sure you will miss something with its exclusion and it's not truly possible to understand someone as intimately in a movie the way you can in a book, but that was not the issue here at all. they literally just removed and changed so many of her scenes. she isn't scared of the fire, she never cries after shooting the pig (i will never shut up about this), she doesn't tell peeta "who cares" after his i don't want them to change me philosophy, she doesn't want to go home in the cave and peeta never tells her you go back to sleep and dream of home. and you’ll be there for real before you know it. she isn't happy after peeta tells her about his crush, she never hides in his shirt. she isn't being held in peeta's lap after the jabberjays and she isn't giddy running to embrace him after his rescue. she is never the girl singing almost forgotten songs her dead and deeply loved father taught her when it all ends...

i think you get my point. none of these are parts of her inner world. none of this are hidden acts. but the movies were trying so hard to open up the world and explore it outside of katniss that they forgot that it was her that made it so rich. that after everything it was always her story first. and that when you fail in writing the person that makes the story alive, you fail the story. and are just making an action movie now.

This is insanely good and painful but I literally can't breathe from laughing so hard at the phrase "his first worst day"

And now this is all I can think of:

i swear there's something in that thing where a peacekeeper whipped katniss across her face and haymitch stepped in and used the "we need her face to look flawless for the cameras" excuse to stop him even though obviously none of them gaf about that, and that thing where plutarh saved lenore dove using the "i need her for the cameras" excuse, like haymitch stole the same shit that was used on his first worst day

and while we're on the subject, THE hanging tree song guy's love who he told to run so they'd both be free was a girl named lil with a brother named spruce who was involved with D12's underground rebellion. and what is a spruce? a tree. not just any tree, no, a fuckin evergreen tree. so while im beating my head against this wall im going to assume lil is short for lily. lily and spruce everdeen

katniss says her father found the lake while hunting. after sotr, this is odd with his covey connection

I wish the tub would expand so I could go swimming, like I used to on hot summer Sundays in the woods with my father.... We would leave early in the morning and hike farther into the woods than usual to a small lake he'd found while hunting.

i can't think of a plausible reason he would lie to his daughter about how he came across the lake, so i doubt anyone from the covey took him there. he probably did find it on his own, as we know he has been in the woods since before ten years old.

It was the fall after I’d turned ten and the first time I’d ever snuck under the fence that surrounds our district.... My friend Burdock had finally worn me down, saying he did it all the time and there was nothing to it and there were still apples if you could climb.

so maybe the covey stopped visiting the lake, or maybe Burdock's covey connection really isn't as strong as his friendship with Lenore Dove implies.

my favorite thing is katniss getting to say her baby is fat when she herself grew up starving and watching prim starve too

Peeta makes books for the toast babies they are just like this with illustrations he actually told me that himself and also Plutarch keeps trying to get him to make children’s books as a profession

The beef between Haymitch and Snow is so funny. The way Haymitch drank an entire pitcher of milk just so Snow wouldn't get any, so Snow kept supplying him milk throughout his entire stay in the Capitol after his victory... bro what are you doing you're the president of Panem😭
