End of the Year WIP ask game, "send me a 👀 and i’ll post a snippet of art/writing that i never got around to finishing this year (r.i.p)"

This is an Az one shot inspired by the song Holding Out for a Hero:

A shadow lingered outside the doorway of Nyx’s room, watching you and the Night Court’s heir with an intensity that could only belong to one person.

Azriel.

His eyes were fixed on you as you told Nyx one of your enchanting tales. Nyx loved when you babysat him, knowing he was in for a nice bedtime treat every time. You were a devoted nanny to him and, on the side, delved into the world of writing novels for children. You often used your magic to create vivid illusions in the air, bringing your stories to life with every word. Captivating not only the adorable child in the bed beside you but also the one lingering outside the doorway.

Azriel stood there for a moment, under the pretense of saying goodbye to his nephew. 

Cassian had seen through him and now stood at the bottom of the stairs, rolling his eyes with a knowing smirk while Nesta shoved him –a warning to not say a word. The Night Court’s spymaster was not as slick as he thought. Cassian had caught his lingering stares and flushed cheeks whenever you’d smile at him one too many times. 

It was obvious to him–and anyone, really–that Azriel had a crush on you.

Feyre and Rhysand had already bid their son farewell, as had Cassian and Nesta a couple of minutes ago. Rhysand had important business to attend to in Hewn City that required all of their presences. It would only be for a couple of hours.

Your voice filled the nursery as you continued your bedtime tale. Tonight, it was about a damsel in distress and a brave warrior.  With the movement of your hands, your illusions danced in the air, creating vibrant images of a princess in a tower.

"And so, the princess looked out from her tower with a heart full of longing," you narrated, your tone soft yet enthralling. "There was a labyrinth of evil creatures below her, content to keep her trapped in that tower forever…[insert rest of story here, how she waits for a knight in shining armor…]”

Nyx's eyes widened in awe, completely entranced by your storytelling and the magical images floating before him. He leaned forward, eager to hear more. “He’s gotta be stwong and fast!”

Azriel stepped into the room, and though his presence was usually quiet, Nyx’s head turned toward him. “Uncle Az!” Nyx exclaimed, eyes lighting up. “Like Uncle Az!”

Azriel’s heart swelled at the boy’s excitement, but his eyes remained on you. He gave you a polite nod in greeting, lips turning upwards into a small smile. He stepped forward, kneeling before Nyx’s bed on the side opposite of you.  “Couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to my favorite nephew, could I?”

Nyx lets out a delighted squeal and you resist the urge to laugh. He’s Azriel’s only nephew. Nyx then looks at you and then back at Azriel and then finally at you. “Can we make Uncle Az the hero? Pwetty please!”

“Of course,” you smile, heart fluttering as the silhouette of the knight turns into something more akin to Azriel’s. Nyx clapped his hands, delighted by his uncle’s addition to the story.

When your eyes met Azriel, you felt a spark and quickly turned your attention back to your magic.

The mh separation/reunion AU (do I have a name outside of the song that first inspired it? It could be like the “something blue” AU for like. Wedding reasons. ANYWAY) is fun largely because it’s a chance to explore how Haru isolating himself or running long-term could’ve affected the Tachibanas, but I’ve been lingering a little more lately on the Haru details of those years spent apart. In this universe, it’s not as if Haru and Makoto dramatically never talk again after the fireworks fight, but something… shifts. This time, Haru doesn’t have that quick turnaround on what he wants to do with his future, especially in a way that has him (still confused and cagey) ready to uproot and choose Tokyo. So, he watches his friends get ready to transition into their hopeful futures, chase after their dreams, and tries to fade into the background. Out of everything he feels, the two he learns to put a name to are “unremarkable” and “untethered.” This is what he said he wanted once, right? To be “ordinary,” to be “free?” He doesn’t let anyone close enough to tell him otherwise and uses those two emotions as his reason to recede further into himself and away from the people who (he convinces himself) are ready to let him go in pursuit of the future. He doesn’t repeat his blow-ups with Rin or Makoto, but he resigns himself to both of them leaving as an inevitability, and he plans to do exactly what he did as a scared kid every other time somebody decided to leave: throw himself into the familiarity of routine and creature comforts for as long as possible until he feels safe enough to take another step.

I don’t have the clearest idea of Haru’s entire timeline between one of the last times the Tachibanas see Haru (right before Makoto plans on moving to his apartment) and when Ran finds him at his uncle’s bakery, but I’ve been think about how those years might look to him in retrospect, specifically in the context of Ran reintroducing the possibility of Haru seeing Makoto again after so long. He was recruited by extended family over into their business and their lives at his lowest/bleakest (practically unreachable to all of his friends and almost hiding away in his house from the town he thought he wanted to cling to), and his time with them led to inevitable changes and a life forming for him, whether he intended it or not. As much as he wants to say these years are divorced from his friends and life before, that’d be a lie and a disservice to all of the memories that shaped him.

For all of the ways he tries to avoid thinking about Makoto… some nights, man. I think I said it before, but it’s like trying to forget the feeling of hunger until one mundane trigger makes you realize you’re starving. Of course his best friend’s influence is woven into many of the ways he relearns and knows how to care for the world (build himself a present, if not a future, piece by piece), and every little bit that he notices is a reminder of how much Haru misses him. Whether it’s all platonic, romantic, or something else entirely, Haru only knows that it’s heavy and haunting. He misses having him in any form beyond a memory.

But, Haru left first. He’s the one that stretched the distance between them until he couldn’t hear Makoto call out his name anymore. What was he supposed to do, chase him belatedly? Try and covet that big bright spirit for himself after being the one to push it away in all of his fear? There were so many nights here and there where he thought about reaching out, but he didn’t know what would hurt worse: seeing how Makoto moved on and didn’t need or want Haru back in his life, or being welcomed back hastily just to disappoint him again. Time stretched on, the yearning/reminiscence came in as sporadic pangs, and Haru could never bring himself to reach out (out of fear, out of shame, out of… a lot of things, really). “The one that got away” and “right person, wrong time,” so it goes.

Those old resignations all get called into question as soon as Ran has anything to say about it, though. She is going to have those idiots face each other one way or another, because the few meetings she spends back around Haru again makes clear something she has maintained the whole time: Haru didn’t stop caring about them, not really. Soooo, why not make planning her special day a chance to scheme a little bit, just to see what happens?

I headcannon Ben and his kids as having sleep issues, so imagine hum dealing with that for the first time lol

I definitely write Ben with P.TSD after the w.ar (and during, to be frank), so his vivid thoughts lead to equally vivid nightmares. I HC that he gleans about 4-5 hours of sleep on average, so those night terrors often wake him up and make it near impossible to find rest. If there's a thunderstorm in the evening, the likelihood of sleep is even lower, given how the loud booms are similar to a.rtillery fire.

With his kids, I never really considered the possibility of them sharing in his insomnia, tbh, since I see him as having sleep trouble from both P.TSD and burning the candle from both ends. But still, it's not impossible, and it's at least cute envisioning the entire family just smooshed into the same bed lol.

ㅤBeing the master manipulator he is, in and out of the genjutsu arts, Itachi definitely knows how to beg very prettily and very convincingly. He knows what to say, how to say it, and is very talented at putting up a perfectly innocent/needy expression and even to throw in pouty lips and fluttering eyelashes if need be (and lbr his eyelashes are a weapon in and of itself). It is something he enjoys doing, because it indirectly builds on his constant need for control - it feels kind of like a power high, to realize he has the ability to get his partner to do what he wants by simply asking/begging them to do it (provided all parts involved are willing and consenting, of course!).

ㅤThe other way around, i.e., making his partner beg, doesn't happen as often - not really because he doesn't enjoy it, rather because he is quite submissive during intimacy and being the one begging comes more naturally to him. Nonetheless, he can also be an absolute little shit - and, in these circumstances, he will certainly enjoy his partner begging him to stop the goddamn teasing and move things along, for example.

ㅤUhhh Itachi doesn't really have a favorite body part of his own. There are parts he uses a lot for seduction, such as his eyes and his hands/fingers and his mouth/lips, but they are a means to an end more than something he stops to give much attention to, so to speak.

ㅤAs for his partner, he does love a beautiful and attractive chest, irrespective of the partner's gender. Because a chest makes for a wonderful pillow! And allows for wonderful snuggles, too. He also tends to be very attracted to nice and shapely thighs, again irrespective of gender and also irrespective of something like body weight. Pretty thighs come in all shapes and sizes. Something else he loves to gaze at is his partner's smile and their eyes.

ㅤDuring intimacy, he doesn't necessarily focus on a specific area or spot, unless he knows his partner is particularly sensitive there and enjoys being stimulated there. In fact, if you tell him something low-effort like you're so hot, there is a high chance you're gonna be answered back with a sassy thank you, i'm aware.

ㅤWhich isn't to say he does not appreciate dirty talk, per se, but it has to be done right. It has to be ingenious, preferably, and above all, it has to be meaningful and heartfelt. Something that speaks to him, particularly, rather than something that can be tossed at just anybody. And something that works really well with him, actually, is to make the talk about the reactions he's displaying - because it shows his partner is paying attention to, and enjoying, said reactions that they're provoking in him. Your compliment made him blush? Point it out and talk dirty about it. You touched him somewhere that made him squirm or whimper? Point it out and talk dirty about it. ㅤYes to both! Not in the sense of i marked you because I own you/you belong to me, because Itachi really does not appreciate being objectified nor objectifying others, but in the sense of said marks being lasting proof of what happened during that lovemaking/make-out session.

ㅤIt's a sort of badge of honor, so to speak. It's visual story-telling. If he looks at the mirror and sees marks - a bruise where his partner held too tight because they were going reckless with pleasure, a bite mark placed while his partner climaxed, hickeys and other kiss/suck marks all over his neck - he will immediately be reminded of how much he and his partner appreciate each other and how good that lovemaking/make-out was.

12. Sexuality hc!

I have my biases in this, I'll admit, but I genuinely read the not-so-good Doctor as bi/pan in that I don't think he particularly cares about gender when it comes to his attractions and there's textual support over the years with various iterations of him showing interest in or having chemistry with both women and men. Yes, yes, Have a Gay Old Time and all that, but his intro comic suggests, "he certainly is a queer fellow" - given that his Year One backstory is a gender-flipped Carrie, itself popularly read as a gay allegory (hell, I think his bullies even were specifically homophobic towards him), given the long affinity between LGBT+ folk and horror/identifying with the horror monsters, and even given how blissed out Nolan!Crow looked getting his hair pulled by Batman, I'd say there's a lot to work with there.

27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc, who would be the most fun for them to meet?

Absolutely love this one! I've already had a ton of fun speculating with you about him meeting Dani Ardor of Midsommar, fitting because she's even a psych major if I remember correctly, and going back and forth with what could be done with such an AU. Honestly, any horror villain and/or hero(ine) would suit him because what's so great about Crane is that as Scarecrow he works within any text to reveal a character's deepest fears and relationship with fear, while also having an academic/professional interest in them as a psychiatrist. I do think I've seen posts on here speculating on the fun he'd have with Jack Seward as a potential ally and/or rival/disappointing colleague, so that's a definite one also! And because I'm predictable, it would likely not be healthy (in that he would enable/encourage her most violent instincts, but hey, at least theyr'e supporting each other?) but at least a little touching and sweet that he'd be a needed avuncular figure to Carrie White.

30. The funniest scene they had? Oh, gosh, hard to pick just one! When old school Crane declared his plan was to commit heists for more money to buy books? When he beefs it so completely and utterly with Becky and has the chutzpah to think her issue with him is that she wants him to alter that godawful Mistress of Fear straw corset and muppet mask costume? "This is a perfectly rational response to my traumatic experiences, and if you don't believe me, I'll kill you!"? His little dance of joy out the window in the first volume of Year One? The entirety of his appearance in Happy Halloween, Scooby Doo, an extension of his habit of just Showing Up Places He Has No Business Being (including other canons)? On that note, literally everything he does in the Dark Knight Trilogy as he Barbies his way through every villainous profession in Gotham's gig economy? (Though going down that easy in Batman Begins and his sassy little strut out of the truck in The Dark Knight are highlights.) For such a frightening and tragic character, the guy is funny as hell!

10. what genre do you most enjoy, whether in roleplay, or fiction as a whole? (fantasy, period, superhero, etc.)

this is a bit cliche, but i love a good fictional piece with a mix of everything. suspense, mystery, comedy, adventure, romance, a mix of so many things. that's the type of content i consume a lot & the content i see that just always sticks to me. i don't have a preferred single genre. see i love my salads mixed. i grew up playing final fantasy games which happen to be that sort of content, there's pieces of all of these different genres in their stories.

i love my threads to be as much of a fruitcake as i am.

Even with song and l.iquor flowing, the men in camp didn't tend to ask one another overly personal questions -- or at least, not anymore. To get to know one another invited the potential for affection, and with that affection, the glaring opportunity for loss. Nevertheless, Benjamin was pleasantly surprised by the query. No one beyond his friends had ever inquired about his father before, and as with all instances of Nathaniel being brought to the forefront, Benjamin was imbued with a bolt of pride that burst between his ribs.

He loved his father. The man was stern, but fair, yet assuredly the best of them, and he prayed he could match up to the w.ar hero his father had once been.

With a faint smile, Benjamin leaned toward the campfire and shrugged, absently worrying his thumb over his bottom lip. "It's hard to put into words," he softly allowed. "How, after all, can mere descriptions ever properly do our loved ones justice? The man taught me everything: how to read, to study and appreciate the languages, to s.hoot, to discern...and then when Mother passed, he taught me how to remain kind even when I was angry -- so, so very angry."

A rawness overtook Benjamin's throat, but he did not cry. "I do not mean to elevate Father to a godlike status, because he was far from that -- he's quite imperfect -- and yet to Samuel and I, he was everything and more growing up." His mouth twitched into a smile. "Though if you ever try his baking, you'll see what I mean by the imperfections. He has a tendency to burn things...truth be told, if he merely served an apple, I'd expect it to burst into flames."

Grin growing unfettered, Benjamin looked away and laced his hands over his lap. "I wish I could explain piece by piece why Father means so much to me, but I'm afraid I don't have the time, nor the eloquence to do him the proper justice. He inspired me to be here -- his fire spread to my heart, and now I can't see myself serving in any other capacity."

Smile fading, he looked out over the horizon as his expression dimmed. "I just wish I could see him on this day..." Don't be selfish. Many children cannot see their fathers -- you are not special. Clearing his throat, Benjamin amended, "But alas, joy and celebration must come after this w.ar is won, and not before. I have faith we'll see one another again."
