You were a lot like Jacob. Not in the way that you were incredibly corny or attempted to use the language of your students as a way to relate to them, but rather in your opinions on the holidays. The holidays never meant more to you than family chaos and winter depression, and that idea had been ingrained into your head since the day you first saw the light of the world.
You enjoyed the lights and songs, they were always beautiful in your eyes, but the beauty they brought was always overshadowed by the pain and depression that Christmas and everything around it brought. Whenever people asked why you were a Grinch, you'd just say that 'Christmas was a commercialized holiday with traditions taken from Pagan rituals who were later demonized for those same things'. You tried to find so many things wrong with Christmas so you didn't have to admit that your family was the reason you never enjoyed the holidays. However, once you had moved to Philidelphia and started as a teacher at Abbott Elementary, you quickly realized that almost everyone felt the exact opposite about the quote-on-quote "Most Magical Time of the Year".
Janine was always chipper, so the Christmas spirit was bound to flow into her like the snow into the hand turkey's she used to prevent it from entering the classroom. Barbara was a devout Christian, meaning Christmas meant a lot to her along with it being her favorite holiday of the year. Ava loved the sexy Santa dresses and the incredibly suggestive songs played throughout December (and let's be honest, half of November if you went to any retail store). Gregory was neutral, as he always was, but he liked the movies. Jacob was just like you when it came to this whole season of magic and love and for roughly the same reasons. Melissa, well she adored the holiday season, even if she didn't show it. The only way you found out about the redhead's adoration for Christmas was after you began dating her.
She explained everything to you, her holiday party with Barbara, her dinner with her family, the special things she did with her students, and so many more things that left you completely shocked.
You simply didn't understand, and you wondered how someone could love a season filled with nothing but depression and fighting. It didn't make sense when everyone around you was talking about their holiday plans with family and they seemed excited.
So, when you were sitting in the teachers' lounge a couple of days before winter break, you were unusually silent as you sat next to your girlfriend.
"So, Y/n, what are you doing for the holidays?" Janine asked with her usual bright smile.
You hummed, looking up from your barely-drank coffee with tired eyes.
"I'm not doing anything, I'm gonna stay home," You muttered.
"You're not coming over for dinner hon?" Melissa perked up, her neutral expression into one of concern.
"No, I'm not one for all the family stuff..." You replied, looking down at the beverage in your hand, your focus going towards the patterns made by the creamer on the top.
"But Christmas is time to be with friends and family!" Janine tried to protest, only to be shot a scolding look by Barbara.
"If they don't want to do that, then they don't have to," Barbara spoke. "But, dear, are you alright? You have been down these past few days,"
"And I've said I'm fine," You rolled your eyes, missing the sharp and quizzical look your girlfriend was sending you.
"Can we just talk about literally anything else?" You sighed, mustering up the energy to take a sip of your drink.
"Yeah, I agree," Jacob said before talking about some sort of new movie coming out.
But Melissa wasn't about to let this go. She was fine with you not coming for dinner, but she wasn't fine with you being miserable.
"Babe, can you tell me what is going on with you?" Melissa asked gently, placing her hand on your thigh while her other held the steering wheel.
You weren't technically living together, as you still had your place, but you preferred to be at your girlfriend's house rather than your little apartment, after all, it didn't feel like home there anymore.
"I..." You began, looking out the window to see all the passing trees and cars. "I don't know,"
"You're never like this. I'm not mad at you at all. I'm just concerned," Your girlfriend squeezed your thigh softly to reassure you.
"...Look, my family just fought a lot during the holidays, so I don't like it that much," You confessed, leaning your head against the cold glass.
"Oh," The woman next to you spoke, her eyes focused on the road while her brain tried to comfort you in the best way possible. "I understand that, but there's so much more to the holidays than fighting,"
"I just...I just don't believe you, I want to, but I can't," You replied.
There was silence in the car for a couple of minutes as Melissa thought deeply, finally speaking up after an idea came to mind.
"How about I show you?"
"What?" You snapped your head to look at her.
"How about I show you that the holidays are enjoyable?" She repeated, clarifying what she had said.
"I-I don't know..."
"Look," Melissa said, parking her car in her driveway before turning to face you. "You give me till the end of the year to prove to you that Christmas is a good time, deal?" She smirked, holding out her hand.
You paused for a moment, staring at her hand with a nervous expression prominent on your face.
"And if you don't convince me?" You asked.
"I'll leave you alone, but there will always be a spot open at the table, so you have nothing to lose," The older woman replied. "Now, do we have a deal?"
You sighed, nodding in defeat before shaking your girlfriend's hand.
"You've got less than two weeks, Mel," You warned her, trying to hide that you were secretly grateful to your partner for caring so much about you.
"It's no problem, I can do it," She winked, kissing your hand, fully aware of your gratitude.
A couple of days later, you were sat by the Christmas tree, holding a simple family photo ornament in your hand, your thumb wiping off the occasional pine needle that had fallen onto it.
"Whatcha doin' hon?" Melissa asked with a smug smile, leaning over your sitting frame, blocking the light from your view and causing you to look up at your redhead girlfriend.
"Just looking at the ornament, are you sure your family doesn't fight?" You sighed, letting go of the decoration and allowing it to rest on the tree branch.
"Except for me and Kristin-Marie, no one does really. Every fight is clearly all in good fun," She assured you.
"So...no one walks out?" You asked.
"No, nobody walks out, cucciola," The woman standing above you chuckled. "Me and Kristin-Marie may not get along that well, but we kinda enjoy all that fighting. After Janine invited her over here, we got back to talking,"
You grimaced at the memory, laughing at how pissed off Melissa was at Janine the day after.
"Alright, I'll believe you, for now," You stood up, kissing her softly.
"You better, 'cause we Schemmenti's are known for our persuasion," She smirked.
You rolled your eyes, laying your head on her shoulder, already feeling your heart softening its harsh feelings towards the holidays.
"Say, do you wanna watch a Christmas movie? You can pick," Melissa asked you, wrapping her arms around you to embrace you tighter.
You nodded.
"I like Miracle on 34th Street, maybe that one?" You blushed, pulling your head from your girlfriend's clavicle.
Melissa smiled softly at your rosy cheeissing you on your temple.
"Of course, hon. You can put it on, and I'll head go make us some hot chocolate?" She suggested, walking into the kitchen and leaving you to prepare the movie.
You nodded, sitting down on her couch (that no longer had plastic thanks to you) and grabbing the remote, typing in the name of the movie.
When Melissa finally returned with two mugs of hot chocolate and a bowl of cinnamon sugar popcorn, you were pretty much dumbfounded.
"Holy cow Mel! This is so good!!" You beamed, taking a sip of the hot drink she had made before popping a couple of pieces of popcorn in your mouth.
"Thanks, babe," Your girlfriend sighed at the taste of her cocoa, wrapping her arm around you, her eyes focusing on the movie.
When Christmas day finally rolled around, you were impressed by just how many of Melissa's family members were at her mom's house for Christmas, and everyone seemed to get along (Except Kristin-Marie and Melissa, of course). The whole family seemed to absolutely adore you, and you felt...welcome.
You didn't even need to introduce yourself as you walked in the door, as everyone knew practically everything about you.
Teresa, Melissa's mom, immediately took you into the kitchen and asked you what your favorites of the array of food were so she could make more. John, Melissa's dad, gave you a gruff handshake and asked you if you liked football, which started a whole conversation about Melissa's early days of being a football fan. Kristin-Marie was standoffish, looking at you with a glare the entire time as Melissa had warned you about. Her infamous cousin Vinny was playful and tackled you with a hug in his large frame when he saw you enter the door with his favorite cousin. Her other younger cousins simply flocked around you asking you questions about you, and Melissa's older cousins quickly started sharing embarrassing stories about your girlfriend (You had to duck when she tried to punch them).
You walked into the dining room, helping set out the cutlery and plates to hopefully get some stress off Teresa's back.
"Oh dear, they're so much better than that pig you would bring," Melissa's mother laughed once you were out of the room.
"I told you that you'd like Y/n, Ma," Melissa sighed, stuffing her hands in her pockets with a smile.
You peeked out from the doorway connecting the kitchen and dining room, eavesdropping on the conversation when you heard your name mentioned.
'What are they talking about? Did I make a bad impression?' You worriedly thought, your heart rate picking up.
"Well, you were right. Only one thing, they seem so nervous, did you tell 'em that we were gonna sacrifice them?" Teresa snickered, taking a sip from the tiny bottle of prosecco you brought her.
"I've got a bet with them that I can make the holidays enjoyable, since it never was for them," Your girlfriend explained. "You should have seen Y/n a couple of days ago, they were miserable. I'm glad I got them to enjoy the season more than they used to,"
You smiled softly, your eyes brimming with tears that you quickly wiped away.
"Were you talking about me?" You asked, walking towards Melissa and her mother.
"Yeah hon, my mom loves you," She smirked. "I told you there was nothing to worry about,"
"You've got good taste in alcohol Y/n," Teresa laughed, finishing off the miniature bottle.
"I'm glad you think so, Melissa said it was your favorite, so I got you the new flavor they came out with. I can get you a bigger bottle if you'd like!" You beamed.
"That won't be necessary, I'll get my own," Your mother-in-law waved off your gesture.
You chuckled, beginning to talk about all the stories Melissa told you about her chaotic family, while Melissa slipped away to go be with her younger cousins, a soft smile on her face at the sight of you being so happy.
"I mean, when I heard that story about Vinny I think I couldn't walk from how hard I was laughing!" You giggled, covering your mouth to hold in more laughter.
"He was a weird kid, but we love him," Teresa chuckled, gesturing to the table once she was finished. "It's around dinner time, you wanna get a seat?"
You nodded, cheerfully making your way to sit next to Melissa, leaning your head on her shoulder.
"They're much better than Joe, he wasn't as happy when he talked to us about Melissa, there is something different about this one," Melissa's aunt Chloe walked up to Teresa.
"Definitely, I'm glad we got to increase their holiday spirit and give them a family, they deserve it for how happy they've made my daughter," The older blonde hummed, taking a seat at the table after finishing the conversation with her sister.
"Thank you so much for inviting me Miss Schemmenti," You smiled, hugging your mother-in-law. "The food was absolutely delicious, and your house is gorgeous!" You praised her, looking at your girlfriend before back at Teresa.
"Oh hon, call me Teresa, you're so sweet," The older woman placed her hand over her heart. "I'm glad someone as wonderful as you are with my daughter,"
You practically melted how kind she was and you were surprised you weren't crying.
"She means the world to me," You looked at Melissa, kissing her cheek. "Thank you again for inviting me,"
Teresa smiled, waving you two off as you walked to your car.
"So, how do you like the holidays hon?" Melissa sported a knowing grin.
"I love them, Mel...You did it, somehow," You sighed, looking up and laughing softly.
Your girlfriend chuckled, starting the car and driving out of the neighborhood, noticing how your eyes were locked on all of the Christmas lights and decorations unlike before.
"What if I told you that when we got home, I'd have something that'd make you love the holidays even more?" The redhead next to you spoke after around ten minutes of comfortable silence, squeezing your thigh to get your attention back on her.
"Oh really? What if I told you I didn't believe you?" You smirked, moving your body to face her.
"You didn't believe me a couple of days ago, now look where that got ya," Melissa teased as you pulled into the driveway at her house.
"Whatever," You rolled your eyes, a shit-eating grin still on your lips.
"Now come on, I have a surprise for you," The older woman urged you to go inside.
When you finally entered the house, you noticed the living room was much tidier, but nothing looked out of place except for a couple of non-flame sugar cookie candles being lit, making the whole house smell like a calm bakery.
"You cleaned! I was gonna do that!" You laughed.
"No hon, that's not the surprise, go lay down on your stomach," Melissa instructed you, kissing your forehead before going to the bathroom and bringing back a basket.
"What's that for Mel?" You asked, your speech slightly muffled by the pillow your face was lying on.
"You had a busy night, I thought I'd help you relax," Your girlfriend chuckled.
Her soft yet strong hands lifted your shirt, applying lotion to themselves before rubbing your back thoroughly. You hummed in contentment, melting further into the couch, your eyes hooding from the sudden feeling.
"Thank you, my love. You really didn't have to do this," You mumbled, letting out an occasional moan whenever she hit a sensitive spot on your back.
"It's no problem hon," She bent down to kiss the top of your head, smiling as your body relaxed under her touch. "I'm just glad I got you to enjoy this time of year as much as I do,"

Which DL character do you find the hardest and easiest to translate? One thing I love about the game is the variation of each characters speech manner which reflects their personality. I really enjoyed reading your translation notes about the slangs and figures of speech they used so thank you very much for adding those!
Level 1
・Kanato: Closest to 'textbook Japanese' you will find in DL. Uses proper grammar and very little to no slang.
・Laito: Not quite as polite as Kanato since he uses colloquial expressions (short forms of verbs/etc.) but he also does not use a lot of slang or anything.
・Azusa: Also uses colloquial/short forms of verbs but his sentence are usually very straight-forward and since he talks so slowly, I can basically just translate while he's speaking. :p
Level 2
・Shuu: Shuu doesn't use a lot of slang or anything, but he's lazy even when he talks, so he uses a lot of short sentences where you - as a reader - need to fill in the blanks. This can be tricky for beginner learners who aren't yet accustomed to the context-heavy structure of the Japanese language.
・Ruki: He speaks very clearly and does not use any kind of slang, but he does use more advanced vocabularly and also tends to...ramble, lol. His dialogue can really feel like it just keeps on dragging on forever, which can be very overwhelming for beginners.
・Kino: Generally Kino is quite easy to understand BUT if you are someone who is not very well-versed on video games/video game-related vocabularly, then some of the things he says may leave you puzzled. He likes to talk about everything as if it's a game after all. :p
Level 3
・Kou: Generally Kou is pretty easy to understand but every now and then he'll throw you for a loop and use very specific terms/slang words. (The kind of slang you'd expect from a Japanese teenager)
・Shin: He has a few quirks to his speech pattern and he also likes to use sarcasm/rethorical questions which aren't always easy to grasp when it's not your mother tongue.
・Reiji: Even though Reiji does use keigo (unlike Ruki), I do find him relatively easy to understand because he also talks in a very calm and clear manner. Keigo is usually something taught in textbooks as well so those who learnt Japanese in a class might actually struggle less with Reiji than they do with Ayato & Subaru.
・Ayato: Even though Ayato has a very crude way of speaking, he is also a big dumb dumb so his vocabularly is pretty limited. With this I mean that he uses the same words/structures/phrases over and over so once you learn those, it gets a lot easier to understand him.
・Subaru: Similar to Ayato. Uses a lot of slang and crude language, but he likes to repeat the same phrases too so once you get a grasp of that, you're good to go.
Level 4
・Yuma: I struggled SO MUCH with Yuma's dialogue when I first got into DL. :/ Whenever I had to translate a drama CD and it had Yuma in it, I instantly broke out in a sweat. This guy not only uses a lot of very specific slang, he also tends to mumble a lot and doesn't articulate the best. ^^;;
・Carla: Complete opposite case here. Carla does not use any 'slang', but his speech pattern is a mixture of modern and old/classical Japanese (kobun). Some of the words he uses (e.g. kisama) have changed meaning over time so this can be very confusing to those who are not aware of their original meaning. On top of that, he also uses a lot of very advanced vocabularly. > < It's especially tricky when translating a drama CD because Japanese is filled with homophones so trying to look up words based on sound alone is very difficult.
---
Gonna tag a few fellow (DL) translators below because I'd actually love to hear other opinions on this as well. :D

so ive seen alot of potential traffic life seasons i wanted to put my hat in the ring
the names a work in progress but basically last life mixed with double life
maybe it could be "one life (per player)" or "poly life" or "doublast life" or something less stupid
so you start with anywhere from 2 to 4(?) lives. (had to lower the starting maximum for reasons that should become obvious) (might just make it 3 lives to start for everyone and while that doesnt sound last lifey trust me it will make sense soon (and be much easier to code methinks)
you and your soulmate(s) share the same life total.
the amount of lives you have is equal to the amount of soulmates in a grouping. (this is why. i dont want the whole server in two 6 player polycules yknow?)
so you and your one soulmate have 2 lives. you and your three soulmates have 4 lives.
(ive experimented with making it two lives per player or adding 1 life to each polycule but that makes the following p much impossible to balance)
similarly to last life, you can use a command to give a life to another player / group of players (a polycule if you will-)
however you not only give a life. you also give away (one of) your soulmate(s)
you can choose which soulmate you give away if you have more than one. but if you give away your last soulmate you will be on red until you get another. (unless youve died. if youve died once you need atleast one soulmate to not permadie. if youve died twice atleast two. make sense? that is unless your soulmate gives you to a different polycule that hasnt died)
this means you can finally trade soulmates! yahoo!
you can also just shove soulmates onto other teams! dont like your accident prone partner? shove them over to that red life and hope they consider it worth the tradeoff (and dont send it right back to you)
this does mean that you cant give life when you are out of soulmates. and you also cant give yourself to someone elses polycule. this means theres a minimum number of teams at all times (until one team perma dies)
you also cant take yourself out of a polycule. you either get kicked into a different polycule or kick everyone else out into a different polycule. this minimum number of teams is also the maximum number of teams
make sense??? good
i promise you it works ok
"but what about health totals when you swap soulmates!" your life total changes to that of the polycule you join. next question
also the whole "if you have no soulmates your red (if didnt die)" fits dl pearls "red because my soulmate rejected me" theme or whatever
also also you know the angsty idea we had back in last life where a red gives away a life to someone else? that but instead a red soulmate duo and one of them gives the other to a different group. sacrificing themselves so their soulmate can live on a team with more lives-
anyways the soulmates are still a mystery session one. either you know your soulmates with a number of people the same color mame as you (dark greens with dark greens. limes with limes. yellows with yellows) or everyones light green and theres no indication to start (probably better than having 2 teams of 4 and that being half the server ir having 1 team of 4 and knowing for certain. but thats just my opinion)
anyways this is alot more intuitive than it sounds it just gets complicated as more lives/players get moved around between teams its probably really hard to follow along from one pov (unless it anounces publicly in chat whenever a trade is made and not just to the effected parties? doesnt particularly matter either way me thinks)
theres actually a formula you can use to determin the amount if lives any given team has at a time
P-D=L
P is the number of players on the team currently
D is the number of deaths that have happened to the team. (not the number of deaths of the players on the team. so if player X dies on team triangle and is moved to team square, team square still has 0 deaths and team triangle still has 1 death)
L is the amount of lives the team has after the equation is done. yahoo!
anyways heres a few images that will hopefully help explain it maybe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways with how hectic the whole soulmate swapping stuffs gonna be on its own i dont think we need a boogeyman but i dont think a boogeyman would be bad to include either!
if there is boogeyman it should definitely be assigned to a single person rather than an entire polycule (since polycules change). but if the single boogie fails, either the whole team goes red. or the boogie gets kicked off into their own group and is permanently solo. i think both are cool i dunno
anyways uhhh thats all. i have some ideas for how a theoretical season of this would go but thats for later.

May I please get a Lucifer with a mute s/o?
I'm not mute and only did some Google research so please let me know if I got anything wrong.
I got pretty interested in how this would affect the readers' experience in the devildom so I added some of that in here too.
Lucifer knows from the start that you are mute.
It states that right in your file after all.
It makes Lucifer think about how to help you before you even appear.
When you come you get a DDD ready with a text to speech app.
You also start to learn the Devildom sign language (DLS), alongside the brothers.
When it comes to learning magic you get to use symbols as incarnations and drawing magical circles with a magic staff.
You eventually level up from having to draw on the ground to be able to draw in air, even with just your hands.
You also can use pre-drawn symbols by just focusing your magic on these.
Levi helps you to develop an app for that too.
It's a very unique but effective way of using magic.
You even get the opportunity to learn telepathy, even when that isn't easy to master.
After all of that, you grow closer and closer to Lucifer, who supports you in a lot of ways.
Communicating with him is easy from the start.
He can read the language you use and he knows simple sign language (whatever sign language you use, if any)
You can teach him easily too.
He in turn makes sure you get in contact with other demons that use DSL.
So you never feel isolated and learn to communicate with them in a decent time frame.
Lucifer doesn't mind the fact that you can't speak at all.
After all the yelling he has to endure it's a nice change of pace for him.
Sometimes you have to get his attention by waving your hand in his face or by clicking your tongue.
Lucifer is really used to communicating with you with several methods, sometimes you both just text with each other while cuddling on the couch together.
He is always a bit embarrassed when you sign to him that you love him, while nobody else is looking at you.
When you argue with him you both often just end up gesturing angrily around without him ever yelling.
A always pretty funny for the other brothers.
You both enjoy listening to his records in silence.
Being with you is very relaxing for him.
Whenever you are at a party with him and the other person doesn't speak DSL Lucifer usually translates unless you rather use the text to speech app.
You can also conjure up a little spirit to speak for you or use telepathy if you mastered that.
Lucifer and you often spend time with Diavolo and you have a few little inside jokes with him.
Like some signs that only you three use.

Tough Battles & Soft Reassurances
pairing: din djarin x reader
word count: 2.1k
a/n: i’m finally coming out of my comfort zone and posting my first fic. this took me way longer to write than i ever anticipated and i hope it’s decent. feel free to give me feedback. this was 100% inspired by a fever dream i had a month ago. enjoy!
  masterlist
Silence.
All you can hear is silence. Din has been away on a hunt for the past two days as you stayed behind on the Razor Crest to ensure the safety of the Child. You put the Child down for a nap an hour ago.
The Child’s energy has been lower than usual because of the absence of his adoptive father’s presence. Whenever Din is away on hunts, the baby always seems to be more gloomy whenever the Mandalorian is away. Luckily for you, it gives you the perfect opportunity to do work on the Crest.
As the baby is sleeping, you do some basic maintenance around the Crest, from checking how much supplies you have left to doing some basic wiring fixings on the outside. While you’re checking on the wiring, you get the sudden feeling that something’s
. off. You can’t exactly put your finger on it, but something doesn’t seem right. You immediately put the tools you were using back into the toolbox and head back inside the ship. When you enter the hull of the ship, you notice the Child is now awake and also senses something is wrong. He looks at you with his big brown eyes with his large ears drooping, lower than you’ve ever seen before. The pit in your stomach grows larger as each moment passes.
Letting out a shaky breath, you pick up the baby delicately, scratching softly at his ears as he coos back at you. You head back up to the cockpit of the Crest, placing the Child back in his pram, closing it.
You head back down the main hull of the ship and walk back outside, observing your surroundings. The pit in your stomach keeps growing bigger and bigger. Heading back inside, you walk over to the weaponry cabinet and take out two weapons: a vibroknife and a DL-44 blaster. After picking up the vibroknife, you stuff it in the side of your right boot, just like how Din taught you to. After concealing your first weapon, you grab the blaster and its appropriate holster, securing your second weapon at your right hip. After placing the blaster in its rightful holster, you grab your staff from next to the weaponry cabinet, putting your head through the loop so it can be resting on your back. You begin to walk towards the exit of the Crest, grabbing your comlink and securing it to your left hip, just in case of an emergency. Whenever Din is out on a hunt, he always wants to make sure he has a method of communication in case of a dire situation. Only for emergencies, he tells you.
You’re ready for a fight if your intuition is right. You walk down the steps of the hatch just
. wait. You begin pacing left to right, right to left, and so forth.
You can’t see them, but you can sense you’re being watched. Fellow hunters, you assume, as you’ve been on the run with Din as long as he added you as an extra crew member on the Razor Crest a few months back. Waiting behind as Din goes on hunts has been a normal occurrence for the both of you.
A shoot of pain suddenly runs through your arm when you see them, the hunters. Clutching your right bicep, you see that it’s only a blaster graze. Looking up to find the culprit, you see two Trandoshans and a human bounty hunter running towards you. Thinking quickly, you pull off your staff off of your back and get ready for the upcoming fight. The Trandoshans are quickly approaching you with their vibroswords in their hands. You begin running towards them and kick the one on your left in the stomach, tumbling them down on the ground. Turning to your right, you see the other Trandoshan preparing a swing at you with his weapon as you duck his move. Counteracting, you use your staff and hit his wrist, disarming the hunter. Out of the corner of your eye, you see the first Trandoshan you kicked down is beginning to get back on its feet. You use your right foot, swoop your foot across his ankle, making him fall back down on the ground. The third hunter, the human, finally swoops into action and knocks you to the ground, just like you had done to the first Trandoshan during the beginning of the fight.
On the ground, you attempt to get back on your feet, but the hunter’s foot on your chest prohibits you from doing so. Out of faux surrender, you let go of your staff and have it laying down on your left side. You place your left hand on your right bicep, where you got minorly shot by one of the hunters before they approached you. You have to stay calm, for the sake of the Child.
Pressing down on your chest, making you groan at the pressure, the third hunter asks the question you dread the most, “where is the asset?”
Groaning softly, you reply with, “hell if I know.”
Putting more pressure on your chest, the hunter hisses out, “where. Is. It?”
Inhaling sharply, you attempt to move back up, but one of the Trandoshans hits you in the head with the base of their vibrosword.
You groan in pain, but you would rather die than let these kriffing hunters find the kid. Moving your right hand slowly, you begin to reach for your blaster that sits along your side. Inhaling sharply once again, you quickly pull your blaster out of its holster, shooting the Trandoshan in the foot, making it scream out in pain. The hunter, who’s foot is on your chest, looks behind him, and you take this opportunity to blast him in the foot. Taking his foot off of your chest, you grab your staff from your left side and get up on your feet and kick down the human hunter, shooting him in the chest.
Quickly putting your blaster back in its holster, you wait in anticipation for your opponent’s next move. With the two Trandoshans left, you flex your fingers around your staff, preparing yourself for the next round of fighting. The Trandoshans prepare themselves by snarling at you. The Trandoshan on the left lunges towards you and before he can attack you, you swing your staff at him, hitting him in his ribcage and then kneeing him in the stomach. Doubled over in pain, you focus on the other Trandoshan by knocking your staff at his feet, making him land down on the ground. While he is on the ground, you quickly grab your blaster out of your holster and shoot him dead.
The last remaining hunter sees this and wraps his arms around you, effectively taking you down. The hunter pins you down on the ground and before you can even consider blasting him; he punches you on the nose. Distracting you, he grabs your right hand, takes your blaster, and disregards it to the side, rendering you defenseless. The Trandoshan’s grip on your wrists gets tighter by the second, he leans in closer to you, hissing. But before he can lunge an attack, you muster up the strength to kick him on the back, pushing him off of you. You get up on your knees once again, grabbing the vibroknife that is hidden in your right boot and stab the hunter in the chest. The hunter grabs the knife, now in his chest, and growls at you. You grab your staff at your left side, jabbing the end at his stomach, distracting him once again. Seeing your opportunity, you run to your right where he threw your blaster earlier. Grabbing it, you’re ready to finally end this fight. When you feel the Trandoshan is behind you and is once again trying to pin you back on the ground. Before he is able to do, you kick him with your left foot on his shin. He loosens his grip on you and you’re able to be freed from him. Before he can counter another attack on you, you aim your blaster and shoot him in the chest, just like how you did with the previous Trandoshan.
Sighing heavily, you slowly walk over to the hatch of the Razor Crest and rest on the railing from the tiring fight you just endured. You close your eyes and sigh in relief at the realization that the baby is safe for another day.
“Taking it easy, are we?” You hear a teasing, modulated voice say to you as you open your eyes as you see the Mandalorian hovering over you, with the quarry unconscious over his right shoulder.
Chuckling lightly, you put your left hand behind you and slowly sit up, “‘bout time you showed up,” you say as you use your left hand to support yourself as you stand back up, following Din back inside the Crest.
Taking the quarry off of his shoulder, he quickly took them off his shoulder and froze them in the carbonite freezer. Turning around, you can feel his masked gaze not on you, but rather on the minor flesh wound on your upper arm.
Sighing softly, the Mandalorian approaches you slowly and with the softest touch, his gloved hand gently touches the graze from a blaster shot.
With the slightest tilt of his helmet, you could feel the concerned look on his face from underneath his helmet, “it’s just a scratch. It’s nothing serious, I promise.”
With a slight nod of his helmet, his gloved hand softly glides down the length of your arm until his hand is enclasped into your own and begins to guide you towards a pile of storage boxes.
After helping you sit down on one of the boxes, he looks over to see if there are any remaining injuries you need help amending with. Once he sees the main one- the only injury you possessed from the previous brawl, he temporarily leaves your side in search of the medkit.
Once again, he’s back at your side, kneeling.  He opens the medkit and takes out the necessary medication to help assess your wound. With the softest touch, his left hand grabs yours, and while squeezing it gently, he grabs the bactaspray and uses it on your injury. Hissing lightly, Din squeezes your hand again and you can feel his sympathetic gaze from underneath his helmet. After giving you another sympathetic squeeze of the hand, Din places a bacta patch over your now healing wound.
After returning your gaze after a few quiet moments, the Mandalorian nods at you one last time before getting up from his knees, never letting loose of his grip on your hand.
Without even having to openly communicate, you’ve always been to read Din like an open book. He looks around the hull in hopes of spotting his adoptive son.
“He’s in his pram- in the cockpit.” You say to him as you pull yourself to your feet, “he’s alright. He’s been asleep for the past hour,” giving his hand a squeeze out of reassurance.
“Vor entye.” Din replies with admiration laced in his voice, “not just for today, but for everything. I’m glad you and the little one are safe, cyar’ika.”
“Of course.” With the softest smile on your face, you take a step or two towards your Mandalorian until your chest touches his. He wraps his arms around your frame.
You nuzzle your head against the piece of fabric that covers his neck. You both stand there, embracing each other for a few minutes? An hour? You’re not sure but you’ve always been content with his touch.
Slowly releasing his grip from you, his left hand slowly, gently, touches your chin, forcing you to make eye contact with him. The softest smile danced across your features, he slowly leans forward and presses his helmeted forehead against you. A keldabe kiss. You can hear him softly sigh from the modulator in his helmet. You go back to the position as you were before: his arms wrapped tightly around you as you nuzzle your face back in the crook of his neck. You sigh out of content.
He’s safe, you’re safe, your family is safe. You breathe in deeply and inhale his scent, you’ve always felt safest in his arms. The smile on your face grows stronger. You can finally feel at peace- for the time being.
No matter how dangerous your life with the Mandalorian and his adoptive child gets, you know you wouldn’t trade for this life for anything else.
Mando’a translations: Vor entye- Thank you (lit. I accept a debt) Cyar'ika- Sweetheart, darling Keldabe kiss- Forehead kiss

Please tell me more abt all your aa fics I kinda forgot that you've also played the lawyer game (also miles to go is a brilliant title sdjfkljsdflksjdfl)
I am a CLOWN for the gay lawyers so please feel free to message me about them whenever especially on my main @ghoullian (happy disbarment day also ahah đŸ„Č) More summaries/status/excerpts under the cut!
Since most of the fics on that WIP list were AA I’m gonna sort by whether they’re miles, franziska, or klav gav flavored
Miles flavored
1. On the Dichotomy of Colors in Neo Olde Tokyo and its Applications to Japanifornia, An Essay by Miles A. Edgeworth, Grade 4
Status: COMPLETE, Read here
A oneshot kid!fic set after the classroom trial but before DL-6. Miles confesses by way of steel samurai.
2. Cry for Absolution:
Status: This one is essentially done but I’m debating whether to publish it bc it’s personal.
The miles goes to catholic school au i wrote about here! I added in some slight lang/edgeworth elements.
3. Miles to Go:
Status: Outlined, some chapters written. This is my only AA multi chapter fic. I haven’t worked on it in a bit bc i’ve been playing the games more (started outlining/writing mid game 3, and am now on the game 5 DLC), but I have a bunch of roadtrip stops planned!
Motivated by my desire to have more Miles & Trucy bonding moments, and to torture this poor stuffy man with a chaotic roadtrip. Miles is overworking himself so Phoenix & Trucy convince him to go on vacation with them. Most of his vacations (when he takes them) are spa days with Franziska, so he doesn’t realize until they’re pulling up to the bus terminal that Phoenix has booked a roadtrip across CA.
The parts I have written currently are: a narumitsu having to share a bed in a shitty motel that ran out of rooms chapter; trucy & miles making s’mores. I know I also want to write: supernatural themed roadside attraction chapter with Miles and Maya arguing about whether ghosts are real (possibly at the Mystery Spot or Winchester Mystery House); the opening of Larry’s art gallery as Laurice Deauxnim; supportive!Miles walking with Phoenix across the Golden Gate Bridge (Phoenix is scared shitless bc of Bridge to the Turnabout, but Trucy really wants to go); epilogue is Miles’ choice of vacation— the opening of steel samurai land at Gatewater Land
Excerpt from the s’mores scene:
Trucy looked up at him curiously. “Have you really never made a smore before Mr. Edgeworth?”
Miles shifted uncomfortably. “‘No, I... I haven’t ever been camping before either really.”Trucy’s mouth dropped open, “NEVER?” she said, awed that someone could miss out on something so fundamental to all her childhood vacations with her father.
“No. I mean,” Miles sighed, “My adopted father wasn’t much for camping.”
“Why?” said Trucy, chomping on another marshmallow straight from the bag.
“Well, for one, he dressed like... erm, me. Not me right now, of course,” he said, shifting awkwardly in the baggy matching pink Yellowstone T-shirt Trucy had picked out for them earlier.
“Who knows! maybe if he’d have been less of a stick in the mud, you could’ve had matching t-shirts with him too!” said Trucy, full of naive hopefulness.
Miles knew she couldn’t possibly know the story behind von Karma’s atrocities and speak so lightly of it. Still, he found himself stifling a snicker at the thought of Manfried von Karma being caught in cargo shorts, sneakers, and a souvenir t shirt.
“Somehow I don’t think that would fly,” said Miles, in the understatement of the century.
“Eh, too bad for him I guess. 2 for 1 deals are just for us cool kids I guess,” she said, elbowing Miles on an affectionate joke.
Miles smiled, “Weren’t you just calling me elderly not 10 minutes ago? And now I’m a cool kid?”
“Objection!” yelled Trucy. “That was Auntie Maya!”
“TouchĂ©,” said Miles. “Your father was the one getting the most kick out of it though I think.”
“I think he just likes to see you so... flustered? Not that he wants to see you mad, but... you’re so much more fun when you’re not all geared up to use your pink suit like armor and be an ice man. It just makes us all happy to know you’re here having fun and wanting to spend time with us.”
Miles was glad for the darkness and the heat of the fire to cover up any possible embarrassment or other... frivolous emotions that might be flushing his cheeks from those remarks. He found himself oddly struck speechless.
Clearly noticing the awkward pause in the conversation, Trucy tried to redirect to safer subjects. “Anyway, I’m sorry your dad was a bummer. I love hearing everyone’s cool camping stories.”
4. Miles’ feather of truth nightmare:
Status: this is an outline for a scene I’ll probably stick into another fic at some point!
Egyptian mythology inspired. Miles has a nightmare where his heart is being weighed against the feather of truth, he looks up to find the judge to plead his case, but the judge’s stand has been replaced with a throne. Mvk sits on it, cackling madly before eating his heart
5. Miles Edgeworth & chess through the years:
Status: just an outline currently.
Canon compliant AU with chess as a metaphor to track Miles’ character arc and recovery from his abuse at the hands of MVK. Basically him going from the dehumanizing WIN WIN WIN attitude to love & using chess to bond with loved ones. I wanna have him as a kid learn to play from Gregory as a way to bond, but then suddenly change to being coached to be the best under von karma (who hides a piece in his sleeve to get a win). Picks up in aa1 with him playing against phoenix (phoenix wins by pure luck, not strategy or underhanded tactics), him commissioning That Gay Ass Chess Set in his office, faking his death. Two scenes at the end of him playing against Kay (who cheats and briefly reminds him of MVK, but then laughing bc he knows MVK would HATE that comparison), and then married narumitsu laughing when Pess and Trucy accidentally knock over the chess board
Franziska flavored
1. Franziska’s having a bREAkdOwn! bReaKdOwn! (hospital franmaya):
Status: Scenes partially written, excerpt below.
Franziska and her father share many things: a name, a legacy of success, a destiny of greatness, and matching bullet holes to remind them of their greatest failures. What happens when Franziska wants to see more of herself not in her father, but in Maya Fey?
Excerpt:
“Maya Fey, your family was disgraced by my own father. How can you even look at me?” “You’re not the sins of your father, Franziska. And... to be honest... I relate to you.”
Of all the things she’d said that night, that finally caught Franziska’s attention. She turned her head up in a wide eyed perplexed gaze.
Maya rubbed her head self consciously, looking away from Franziska. “I mean... not to the prosecuting parts, or to putting people behind bars but... I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel like destiny had laid out some grand path for me to follow, and I decided that, no thanks, that road isn’t for me, I’m just going to go tear up the map and make a pit stop at every burger joint in a hundred mile radius instead.”
She laughed, and Franziska let out a furious scowl. “How can you just JOKE about this, Maya Fey? About your future? About your family? About destiny?” Maya sighed. “Look, Fran, I get where you’re coming from. But we deserve more than that. The chance to set our own destinies. Maybe we’re the beginning of our own new family legacies.”
Klav Gav flavored
1. klav gav haircut fic:
Status: Scenes partially written, not outlined
Premise is Klavier visits Kristoph in his cell post aa4 and tries to get closure. Klav cuts off his braid, finds more of a sense of self, and klapollo hurt/comfort at the end
Excerpt:
“You are nothing without me Klavier. You never will be.” Klavier laughed coldly. “You think I don’t know that Kris? You’ve stained every part of my life. Every moment of joy and suffering somehow comes back to you. I can’t even look in the mirror without starting at myself, convinced that it’s the ghost of you and not myself looking back at me.”
“I should’ve thought the great rock star would fancy himself a narcissus. How touching this is not the case. Why, it almost seems you miss me.”
Klavier laughed ruefully. “Miss you?! Of course I miss you. I miss you teaching me how to braid my hair. I miss the person who held my hand at mother’s funeral and didn’t let me cry myself to sleep alone that night. I miss when I didn’t know what atroquinine was and I miss who I was when I could just blindly look past the way you’d just been grooming me this whole time to be a pawn in some sick revenge fantasy against phoenix wright. But I know that none of those memories—none of what i miss—were actually you. Or at least, not the you that you’ve chosen to become.”
Klavier paused and let out a long sigh. When he spoke next, his voice was small and strung out. “I’m tired Kris. I don’t want to see you in me anymore.”
That’s it for now! I genuinely am debating making an ace attorney side blog so I can talk about these more, but idk if there’s much engagement in the AA fandom compared to star trek. Anyway, thank you sm for your ask!!! <3 I’m down to ramble on more about these anytime!!

How to read (at MA level, for exams/quizzes)
We are using reading quizzes to enhance our Zoom classes this semester, and when I asked, my MA students thought some guidance on how to read efficiently for comprehension might be useful. So, this is a quick collection of advice that I find useful from a variety of excellent sources (some of which are linked in the end).
1. Prepare your mind to read this text. If it’s an article, it has an abstract, read the abstract, then read what the subtitles of different parts are. If it is a book chapter, read the introduction and take a look at what the subtitles of subchapters are.
What is this text about?
Why has it been assigned? What topic does it link to? How does it link to what you already know or what has already been covered in class?
2. Take notes while you are reading. What is important to remember is that note-taking is an exercise that starts from a frame or a question. What are you reading FOR? A. Are you reading to comprehend the text and get everything that your teacher / supervisor probably considered relevant (and thus may have put on a quiz or an exam) out of it?   B. Are you reading because you are looking for ideas, inspiration, research findings, conceptual frameworks for a particular topic (this will happen when you are working on your own thesis, research or your own writing)? C. Are you reading to get an overview of the state of the art in a field as you are embarking on a new research project?
These will lead to different types of reading / different types of note taking.  For B it might be a good idea to take notes freehand, for example, my colleague Jenny Hagedorn recommends restricting yourself to one A4 page for notes - instead of copying quotes, write down key words/ideas/things you’re not sure about and link them together as you read...it becomes a visual map of the text - excellent reference point for discussion or quickly sourcing.  For C it might be a good idea to start from skimming a number of texts to then decide on a smaller number to read critically. Critical reading is guided by questions like these (by Wray and Wallace)
1. Why am I reading this? 2. What are the authors trying to achieve in writing this? 3. What are the authors claiming that is relevant to my work? 4. How convincing are these claims, and why? 5. In conclusion, what use can I make of this?
However, whatever you read for; you should read FOR THE ARGUMENT. Most of the key content in the text is given in the form of arguments. So, it is useful to be able to recognize arguments. If you haven’t read a lot of academic writing Graff, Birkenstein & Durst (2018, 11 - 12) have a MASTER TEMPLATE for writing arguments, or their “they say, I say” model:
In recent discussions of
. , a controversial issue has been whether
. . On the one hand, some argue that

 . From this perspective,

. On the other hand, others argue that

. In the words of
.. , one of this view’s main proponents, “

” According to this view,

ïżœïżœIn sum, then, the issue is whether

 or

. My own view is that

 Though I concede that

.. I still maintain that

  For example,

. Although some might object that

.. I would reply that

.. . The issue is important because

. Taking it line by line, this master template first identifies an issue in some ongoing conversation or debate (“In recent discussions of a controversial issue has been”), and then maps some of the voices in this controversy (by using the “on the one hand / on the other hand” structure). The template then introduces a quotation (“In the words of”), explains the quotation (“According to this view”), and states the argument (“My own view is that”). It qualifies the argument (“Though I concede that”), and supports it with evidence (“For example”).
If you are reading for comprehending / to study for an exam or quiz, I recommend:
1. Whether you highlight, underline or take notes, pay attention to the elements of the argument as outlined in the They say, I say model above. Important stuff is bound to congregate in the neighborhood of
where the author is making conclusions or summarizing (often they will spend a paragraph or two explaining something and then summarize the main finding in a conclusive sentence),
when the author is categorizing (making lists, or saying there are two reasons, or three problems, or four approaches),
when the author is making statements about something causing or related to something else (writing that something is because of, caused by, leads to, explains, or comes after questions that start with "why" and "how"),
when the author is engaging with existing scholarship in ways that elevate it as most important (this is where they will condense and paraphrase what they think is important knowledge in the field, look for when the author is named not just cited;
and whenever "some scholars have argued," "there is research that," "Researchers claim," etc is used.
2. If you highlight:
research suggests that just highlighting is not very efficient. Rather, if you highlight, add your own comments in the margins, as notes or in a separate file. If you read digitally, I recommend copying out the highlighted snippets and adding your own comments to them. Make sure you add your comments in a visibly different way, I put in my initials KT in bold to indicate that this is where the quoted text ends and my own thoughts begin.
Some people color code their highlights (by level of importance or by category, i.e. yellow is theory or concept, blue is methods, pink is findings).
3. If you underline: I like this advice by Amelia Hoover Green (see here for more)
Tumblr media
Green explains her system: “First, signposts. I circled “theory” in the first line because I imagine he’s going to tell me what it is. I also circled “prediction,” because I want to know what his theory predicts will happen in the real world. I circled “in other words” because that suggests he’s going to restate something important (in this case, the prediction). After circling, I read carefully in the neighborhood of my key words and underlined a few key sentences. Your goal: underline no more than a few sentences on any page.”
After you are done reading and taking notes, review your notes and try to return to the questions you asked yourself when preparing your mind to read
What was this text about? What was its main argument?
How did it link to what you already know or what has already been covered in class?
What new things, terms, concepts you learned

Jealous of Aladdin
a/n: i would like to start by thanking @shawncxlvins for helping me brainstorm this idea and for helping me with writing it. and @getalittlebit-nervous for helping out as well. i know this is catered to a small percentage of shawn’s fans here on tumblr but i feel like we all deserve to be represented. this is an arab!reader and im not including religion cuz we all know it gets complicated there. i will be using some arabic though but translation will included. i only know my experiences and my culture so please be kind. dl;dr
synopsis: shawn gets jealous of reader’s costar on the set of aladdin.
wc: 6.5k
{Masterlist in Bio}
____________________
You thanked Shawn quietly when he opened the car door for you. Shawn was accompanying you to set today because you were slightly sick. He had come with you once or twice before but he always left early. He cleared his schedule completely to take care of you today.
You trudged onto the set of Aladdin with your hood up and your bag almost dragging behind you on the ground. The most graceful Princess Jasmine there ever was. The first person who came up to you was Naomi Scott, who played your handmaiden in the movie.
“y/n, what’s wrong?” She asked, putting her hand to your forehead.
“She’s got a stomach bug. Refused to stay home. Maybe you can convince her.” Shawn explained as he took the bag you were carrying off your shoulder.
“I’m fine. Besides we’re not filming many scenes with me this week. It’s mostly Mena and Will.” You mumbled.
“I mean, she’s kinda right?” Naomi winced.
“You’re useless.” Shawn scoffed jokingly.
“We’re being let go early today. She’s already here anyways.” Naomi defended herself.
“Mhm, whatever. Michael’s looking for you guys.” Shawn rolled his eyes and pointed to the man in question. “Hey, Will.” Shawn nodded towards Will Smith who was standing nearby. Never in a million years did Shawn think he would be on a first name basis with Will Smith, but there he was.
You and Naomi walked over to the costume designer where Mena was. You said hello to both of them and took the glittery purple vest Michael gave you to try on. Then Shawn saw you start laughing with Mena about something. That’s when things took a turn.
Michael’s station wasn’t too far away from Shawn, so he could hear you and Mena talking. But he understood none of it.
You and Mena are both Arab. Granted, from different parts of the Middle East, but Arab nonetheless. Shawn hated the fact that you and Mena could connect in a way he never could with you. He winced when he thought of the only word he knew described his feelings. Jealousy. Shawn was jealous of Mena and he hated himself for it.
Will saw the wince and he knew what was going on in Shawn’s mind. “You ok, man?”
“What? Oh, uh yeah I’m fine. Just making sure y/n’s ok. With uh Mena over there.” Shawn motioned to where you were.
“I know them talking arabic together gets annoying at times, but you get used to it. At first whenever they laughed, I thought they were laughing at me.” Will laughed.
Shawn chuckled politely in response, even though he wasn’t really in the mood for jokes. “I just- I don’t know, man. I feel like I can’t compare to him.” Another wince graced Shawn’s features “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. I don’t know why that came out.” Will Smith did not need to know about his insecurities in his relationship.
“Nah man, it’s alright. Talk to me. What’s going on?” Will put a hand on his shoulder reassuringly. That was all Shawn needed to open the floodgates.
“I wish I could be like that for her. She got so excited when she knew Mena was cast. She told me it’s because she could finally have someone who could understand. And I want to be that for her. I want to be able to give her everything she needs. But I can’t do what he does.”
“Shawn, of course you can’t do what he does. What he’s doing for her comes from a background. A culture. A whole different type of living. It’s not something you can provide and will never be something you can provide. But that’s not a bad thing. It’s impossible to be able to give your significant other everything they need. It doesn’t make you a bad partner. What makes a good partner is being there for them when they need you. Sometimes, it’s not you who they need. You understand, son?”
“Yeah, I guess I do.” Shawn shrugged, still not fully convinced. Will could see that his words wouldn’t be able to get to Shawn, but your words might.
“You just need to talk to her. Clear things up between you two.” Will gave Shawn a pat on the shoulder.
“I know. But it’s not the right time. She’s so busy nowadays. Being a Disney princess is harder than it looks.” Shawn chuckled.
Their conversation was cut short by you, Mena, and Naomi coming back towards them.
“Momken meyah, y/n?” Mena asked you with big puppy eyes. You groaned in response.
“Go get your own damn water, boy. Can’t you see she’s sick.” Will snapped at him. Mena’s eyes went wide again as he nodded and ran off to get himself some water.
“I thought you said you get used to it. You never said anything about learning it.” Shawn whispered to Will.
“Is that what I said? Must have been a slip of the tongue.”
____________________
You and Naomi were filming a scene in the princess’s bedroom today. You always loved scenes with Naomi because she managed to make you laugh in every scene.
Whenever you looked over to find Shawn, you would see him talking to Mena. They were laughing way too much. At first you were glad they were finally getting along, but now it worried you.
When Guy Ritchie finally yelled cut and let you guys go for 15 minutes, you stalked over to where the two boys were. When they saw you coming towards them, they immediately stopped talking.
“You guys know it’s rude to gossip about someone when they can see you, right?” You raised an eyebrow at them.
“Gossiping? I have no clue what you mean by that.” Mena gasped.
“Yeah, y/n. We were just talking about a mutual friend of ours. I don’t think you know her.” Shawn said, stifling a giggle.
“Oh please do tell, what’s she like?” You said as you took a seat between them on the bench.
“She’s quite shy, I would say.” Shawn started.
“Until you get to know her, obviously. Then she kinda lets loose. Gets a little crazy, if you ask me.” Mena added.
“Very clumsy, too. The other say she tripped over thin air. Remember, Mena?” Shawn laughed and looked over at your costar who let out a howl of laughter.
“I did not! I swear there was a wire. It was the same color as the floor, I just didn’t see it.” You exclaimed.
“And that scene yesterday. When she was supposed jump off the roof.” Mena's laughter made him struggle to get the words out. “She landed face first between the two buildings.”
The scene that was filmed yesterday was of Aladdin and Jasmine as they ran from the guards in the outdoor market place. At one point you were supposed to jump from one roof to the next and end up standing upright next to Mena. You ended up falling face first between the two buildings. Everyone found it incredibly funny. When you filmed the scene again, they asked you to land in Mena’s lap.
“I’m not going to sit here and be bullied. Excuse me, but I’m going to my trailer.” You huffed and got up to start your walk to the trailer.
“y/n! We were just kidding, come on! Don’t be a baby.” Mena called after you.
“No. I can’t forgive you two. You’ve broken my heart.” You yelled back dramatically, you turned to face them as you kept walking in the direction of your trailer with a hand held to your heart to feign sadness.
When you got out of the bathroom in your trailer, you saw Shawn sitting on your couch scrolling through his phone. You walked over and sat next to him.
“I’m glad you and Mena are getting along.” You smiled and placed a kiss on his cheek.
“He’s not so bad when you get to know him.” He smiled and pulled you onto his lap. You were wearing a dress so it rid up to your thighs in the process. You felt Shawn get hard against you within seconds. Shawn pressed a kiss to your jaw and trailed down the side of your neck. “Even taught me a few words.”
“Oh yeah, like what?”
“Habibti, he said it means my love.” Shawn reached your collarbone and went back up to your lips.
“It’s adorable when you say it.”
He pouted and furrowed his brows. “I was hoping it would be more than adorable.”
“Maybe if you could say it right.” You giggled as you sealed your lips around a spot on his neck and began forming a bruise, immediately shutting down any sort of response he had in mind. “What else did he teach you?”
“Albi. He didn’t tell me what that one meant.”
“It means my heart, it’s a term of endearment. But where I’m from, we say qalbi or galbi. Depends on who you’re talking to.” You explained, trying not to go into detail too much.
“But don’t you both speak arabic? Why is it different?”
“Oh, you know. Dialects and all that. It’s kind of like accents. But some dialects have their own words and stuff. It’s very complicated.”
At that moment, the door to your trailer burst open and Mena jumped inside. He was greeted with the scene of your bare legs wrapped around Shawn’s waist. “y/n, homa me7tagenna- Oh my god! I did not need to see that!” He exclaimed at the sight of you on Shawn’s lap. He jumped back out and shut the door behind him.
“He said they need us.” You turned to Shawn as you heard Mena grumbling outside. “We can take care of this tonight, though.” You smiled innocently, grinding down on his crotch.
“You bet your ass we are.” Shawn smirked.
“But seriously, Shawn. I want you to apologize to Mena.”
"What? What for?”
“You know what for. He talked to me the other day. He asked me if you hated him.” You ran your hands through his hair to keep Shawn’s eyes on you.
“And what did you say?”
“I said it’s best if you guys talk about it alone. So please go work things out with him. He really wanted to be friends with you. And you’re giving him a lot of mixed signals.” You gave Shawn a pointed look so he understood you were serious.
Shawn groaned and rolled his eyes. “Fine.”

Another day came where Shawn would come with you to set. The days were coming to an end though. You had merely one week left of filming until the movie would go into post production. Every time you remembered, you would get emotional.
A while ago, you had asked Guy how the musical numbers were to be filmed. You had never been in a movie with such a large production scale, so you wanted to know how to prepare for it. After a while of discussing, you and Guy agreed to do your singing scenes live. Mena had said that he was better off lip syncing his prerecorded songs and you respected his choice. It would be hard and exhausting but the payoff would be amazing. Today, you were filming the ‘Speechless’ scene.
You had been nervous all week long, needing Shawn to calm you down every 20 minutes. He kept reassuring you that you were going to be great, but your anxiety kept getting the best of you.
You had filmed the scene 3 times so far and you kept asking Guy to do it again. You just felt like this wasn’t your best.
“Guy, please. Just one last time, I feel like I can do so much better.” You pleaded.
Guy took a deep breath and looked at you for a moment before giving you a small nod. “Alright, one last time. Then we’re taking lunch.”
Just as you were beginning the scene again, Shawn began approaching Mena. They were far enough from where the scene was being filmed that they didn’t need to whisper but they could still see and hear you.
Shawn cleared his throat to make his presence known to Mena. “Hey, Mena.”
“Oh, hey Shawn. She’s killing it out there, isn’t she?” Mena motioned to where you were with a nod of his head.
“Yeah, she is. She’s been so worried, but I knew she would be amazing.” Shawn smiled at the thought of how hard you’ve worked for this scene and how it’s paying off. “But uh that’s not what I wanted to talk to you about.” Shawn turned to Mena to give him his full attention.
“Alright, what’s going on?” Mena knew what this was leading to, but he wanted Shawn to approach the subject in a way that was comfortable to him.
“Listen Mena, I know I haven’t been the friendliest to you and I’m sorry. I felt kind of threatened I guess, because you and y/n connected in way that I never can with her. I always wanted to be everything she needed but I know that I can’t really be that. And I’m glad she has someone like you who can understand her.”
“It’s all good, Shawn. I understand where you’re coming from and I can’t blame you.” Mena nodded.
“It’s really not all that great. I was childish and immature and I really hope you can forgive me.”
“Consider yourself forgiven, then.” Mena gave Shawn a smile. “Hug it out?”
“Sure, why not?” Shawn chuckled.
Your musical number was coming to an end at the same time as their conversation was.
“y/n! That was amazing! I knew you had it in you!” Guy exclaimed as he jumped off his chair to hug you. “That was it. It’s the one. I’m so proud of you!”
“I told you I just needed one more take.” You grinned. You looked around the set to find Shawn only to see him and Mena laughing among themselves. This movie was definitely wrapping up nicely.
____________________
The initial movie release was set to be in Paris. You had been counting down the days and it had finally arrived. It honestly felt like a dream come true.
You would be walking the ‘purple’ carpet with Shawn but you would pose for pictures with Mena as well. You were wearing a white shirt that somewhat resembled sportswear with a large white skirt. Mena was decked out in a Givenchy suit and Shawn was wearing a classic black tux by Armani.
You walked the length of the carpet with Shawn, stopping every once in a while for the cameras. Shawn obviously knew what he was doing, but you weren’t the most familiar with these types of events, this movie only being your second big acting gig. Shawn knew that and he tried his best to make you feel comfortable.
You reached the last part of the carpet and saw Mena. “Mena! Hey!” You smiled as he ran up to hug you. “How are you?” You asked as you straightened out his collar.
“I’m so excited! You?” He smiled, his excitement was obvious to you before he even mentioned it.
“I’m good, a little nervous. It’s the first showing. Can’t help it really.” You shrugged.
“They’re going to love it. And you look amazing, by the way. White totally suits you.” Mena winked. “Maybe I’ll see you in a different kind of white dress soon.” He said casually as he turned to smile at the cameras. He put his arm around your waist and pulled you closer.
“Shut up.” You laughed. “We haven’t talked about getting married. I don’t know if he even wants to get married, let alone to me.”
“Enti ‘3abiya wala eh? Of course he wants to get married! Have you heard any of his songs? And there’s no doubt that you’re the one he wants to get married to.”
“Don’t call me stupid.” You grumbled. “Did he tell you that?” You asked, surprised Shawn would bring up that topic with Mena.
“No, but I have eyes.”
“Alright, if you think so. A3zmik 3al 3rs, la t5af.” You patted him on the shoulder.
His eyes went big as he grinned. “Really? You would have me at your wedding?”
“Of course, you’re a close friend, Mena. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Aww, y/n I’m gonna cry.” He sniffled, bringing his hand up to wipe away his fake tears.
“If you cry, I’m gonna cry.”
Mena leaned up and placed a kiss on your forehead. “Come on, no crying. We gotta finish this carpet first.”
“I can’t stand you, Mena. All because of a white dress.” You rolled your eyes and continued walking the carpet with him.
Shawn was taking pictures with Will Smith and his family when you reached him. “You ready to go inside? I asked them to get some salt popcorn and chocolate ready for you, so you can do the thing you like.”
Mena looked at you and raised his eyebrows. He was standing behind Shawn so he pointed at him and gave you a thumbs up. You scoffed and waved him away.
“Shukran, 7ubi.” You smiled at Shawn and gave him a peck on the cheek.
“That means thank you, my love.” Mena supplied Shawn with the translation. Shawn’s face turned a light pink after he noticed Mena was listening. He turned to face him and gave him a tight lipped smile in thanks. Then Mena’s face lit up and he leaned up and whispered something in Shawn’s ear. Shawn smiled and nodded in return.
“Mn iyuni ilthntain.” Shawn said, struggling with the pronunciation.
You and Mena burst out laughing. Shawn’s cheeks turned red as he got flustered. “What did I just say?” He groaned.
“You said ‘from both of my eyes’. It’s like saying your welcome. But it’s the way you said it. You can’t say 3yuni.” Mena chuckled.
“I was trying!” Shawn exclaimed.
“It’s alright, my love. I know what you meant.”

You were getting ready for your first interview after the release of the movie when you heard your phone go off in the bedroom. And it didn’t go off just once. Someone was sending text after text and you only knew one person who did that.
“Shawn, can you answer Mena please?” You rolled your eyes as you adjusted your earring.
“Sure.” Shawn unlocked your phone to see what Mena was sending.
mena mas3oud:
y/n e7na yalla 2btadena hat2a5arena (we started come on you’re gonna make us late)
ya 7maraaa (you donkeyyy/ass)
enti fein???? (where are you???)
y/n
bahazar ma2btadenash bas ana downstairs (I lied we didn’t start but I’m downstairs)
bl3arabeya (in the car)
y/n
hamawetek (I’m gonna kill you)
“y/n, its the number thing I don’t understand any of this.” Shawn said as he scrolled through the texts. “Wait, I know he called you a donkey. And he wrote downstairs, so I’m guessing that’s where he is.”
Your face scrunched up in confusion. “He’s downstairs?” You walked out of the bathroom towards Shawn on the bed. You weren’t needed downstairs for another half hour.
“I thought I was taking you to the interview?” He asked.
You took the phone out of his hand and read Mena’s texts. “I thought so too?” You pressed the voice note button as you began looking around your room for your shoes. “Mena, why are you downstairs? It doesn’t start until an hour from now. And Shawn was gonna take me anyways. He wanted ina ikun m3ay for il-interview.”
You found your heels and put your phone on the desk that was near the door. “I told him that you wanted to be with me for the interview.” You said before Shawn would ask you to translate. You were strapping your heels on when you heard a notification. Shawn played the voice note Mena sent.
“Tell him to come with. The more the merrier. 27na fi nafs il hotel anyways. 3arabeya 27san mn 3arabeyetein.”
“What does the not english part mean?”
You were inspecting your make up in the mirror as you explained. “It means we’re in the same hotel anyways, might as well go together. One car is better than two, so two birds one stone.”
“Ah, ok. You ready to go?” Shawn asked as he put your phone in your clutch.
"Yup, just need my bag.” Shawn handed you the clutch he was holding and opened the door for you. “Thank you.” You chuckled.
“After you, Princess.”
The elevator opened up to the lobby where you saw Mena sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone. “I thought you said you were waiting in the car?” You asked as you came to stand in front of him.
“Uh, about that.” Mena gave you a sheepish smile.
You tsked at him and rolled your eyes. “Ilkazab fein broo7?” You asked, trying to mimic his Egyptian accent.
“Oh, shut it.” Mena groaned. “I needed you to come down quickly, I don’t wanna be late.”
“What did you say to him?” Shawn asked as you walked out of the lobby.
“It’s this thing people say. Where does the liar go? The response is hell. It’s not as serious as it sounds, I promise.” You chuckled.
The car ride was pretty short because the hotel booked for you was close to everywhere important for press, including interview destinations.
This interviewer wanted to interview you and Mena separately. So you waited with Shawn as Mena was interviewed. The interviewer didn’t take long with Mena, so you hoped he would do the same with you.
You sat down in the chair opposite the man who introduced himself as Turner Bernstein.
“Alright, we’ll get right into it then, shall we?” He smiled as he straightened out the papers he had in hand.
“Of course, it’s what I’m here for, isn’t it?” You smiled. He asked you some basic questions about the audition, the experience on set, the wardrobe, and everything in between.
“So you and Mena, was there a connection?” Turner asked.
“Yes, from the first time we met each other. He is just wonderful and a dream to work with. And an amazing actor, just watching him in his element was an honor.” You smiled and looked over at Mena.
“Was there any connection off screen?” You realized where Turner was taking this and you hoped you could safely steer it into the other direction.
“We are such great friends. And Mena and Shawn, my boyfriend, get along great together as well.” You hoped he understood to step off the Mena questions, but he either didn’t get the hint or chose to ignore it.
“And you’re both of Arab background, isn’t that correct?”
“Uh yeah, it was nice working on set with someone who can understand me. Even with the difference in dialect and specific traditions and cultures, we still connected over our shared backgrounds.”
“There was no alone time spent together? Just the two of you? You know what I mean.” Turner snickered.
“I’m not sure what you mean by that.” You knew exactly what he meant by that, but no way in hell were you going to give that man what he wanted.
“And what about the kiss you shared at the Paris premiere?”
“The what we shared?” Turner motioned to the small screen beside you that showcased a picture of Mena kissing your forehead. “Oh, that kiss. Forehead kisses are a sign of respect in our culture. Maybe respect isn’t as important to you as it is to us. It doesn’t seem to be.”
Even with all the hints you were dropping, he seemed to not want to move on from the subject.
You were trying to stare at Mena hard enough that he would feel someone watching him, but he didn’t seem to notice.
Shawn saw you staring and knew that something wasn’t right. “Hey Mena, is it just me or is y/n staring a hole into your face?”
“Huh?” Mena looked up from his phone to see your distressed face. “Let me go see whats going on. I’ll be back in a sec.”
“No, I’ll go.”
You saw Shawn approaching and you let out a sigh of relief. “Shawn, I was just talking about you.” Shawn grabbed a chair and pulled it up next to you.
“Uh, this is an individual interview with y/n l/n, Mr. Mendes.” Turner began to stutter.
“Oh don’t worry, I won’t interfere. Go on with the interview, I’ll just be here.” Shawn smiled pleasantly at the interviewer, but his eyes were as threatening as ever.
Turner didn’t bring up Mena for the rest of the interview.
You were glad beyond words when the interview came to an end. You didn’t bother giving Turner a second glance as you walked away to the couch Mena was sitting on.
“What was going on over there?” Mena asked as soon as you and Shawn sat down.
“That creep was being incredibly rude. Kept insinuating that you and I were a thing. Even asked if I cheated on Shawn with you!” Your face was heating up and you were sure your cheeks were bright red. Shawn took a hold of your hand and gently squeezed, telling you to calm down.
“He said that?” Mena was getting mad too, understandably so.
“Not like that, just indirectly. Asked if we had any ‘alone time together’. Asshole.” You scoffed. “Whatever, it’s over now. I need some air. I’ll meet you in the car in 10.” You got up and walked to the stairs to go outside for a bit.
“Is she gonna be alright?” Mena asked Shawn.
“She’ll be fine. Just needs some air, like she said.” Shawn nodded,
“Shawn, you know y/n and I would never-” Shawn didn’t even let Mena finish.
“What? Of course I do, Mena. You’re my friend. I trust you. I would never even think that. I’m just worried about her. She hates being accused of something she’d never do.” Shawn looked out the window to see you pacing the grass in front lawn of the building.
“Yeah, she got really heated up about that. I’m going to talk to that Turner guy. Maybe Sam can talk to his management.” Mena said as he got up.
“You would do that?” Shawn asked.
“I’d do anything for her. And you, for that matter.” Mena smiled.
Shawn grinned. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Should I be regretting the fact that I said that?”
“Mm, maybe.”
____________________
You and Mena were settling into your seats for another interview. It had been a week since your interview with the creepy Turner guy and you were finally over it. All other interviewers since then have been warned and have been respectful.
This interviewer was one you had met before when you were working on your last film, which was also your first. You greeted Mikaela, the interviewer, with a hug before you sat down.
“It’s nice to see you again, y/n. Good to see you’ve been moving on to bigger and better things. I mean, Disney is huge! So proud of you for that.” She sent a warm smile your way.
“Thank you, I know. It’s insane. I literally went into the casting call for fun. I had told my agent that they were obviously not going to cast me, but here we are!” You giggled and sent Mena a warm smile. “Princess Jasmine and Aladdin.”
“What was your first interaction with Mena like?” Mikaela began, all business no chit chat.
You and Mena argued for a minute, both claiming your story was when you two first met even though they were two different instances.
Mikaela went on to ask the usual questions you’ve been asked in these interviews. How you felt when you got the call, what it’s like to work with Mena and Will, the basics.
“And was Aladdin your favorite Disney movie growing up?”
“I think I speak for the both of us when I say it definitely was. It was one of the rare few western movies that represented us and our culture growing up.” Mena said, placing a hand on yours.
“Oh yes, definitely. Princess Jasmine was always a favorite.” You agreed with your costar.
“And Mena, your natural hair is obviously not like it was in the movie. Did you want to straighten your hair for the movie?”
“I didn’t mind. But Mindy, the hairstylist, asked if we could chemically straighten it and I just agreed not knowing what that was. So when I took a shower afterwards and found my hair still straight I freaked out. It was the only way to go by it without straightening it every day though, because Middle Eastern hair is very stubborn.” Mena chuckled.
“I can definitely attest to that.” You laughed along with him.
“The Whole New World sequence was definitely long awaited, wouldn’t you say? How was filming that?”
“So fun. Actually, we got stuck while filming, remember Mena?” You laughed, turning to Mena.
“Yeah, we did! So the carpet in real life was a green board with a small bit of carpet attached to the front. And you’re strapped in because it’s attached to a crane thing that swooshes you around. The crane got stuck and we were stuck up there for like half an hour.” Mena explained, hands very much involved in the conversation as they were moving around nonstop.
“And they strap you in weird, like you’re kneeling. So it wasn’t the most comfortable position to be stuck in for that long. But we couldn’t stop laughing the entire time.”
“And how excited were you to recreate the rest of the songs?” Mikaela smiled.
“Incredibly so. At first I thought I was going to just lip sync the song because I thought they would never in a million years let me sing it. But they did, and it was insane! My agent actually sent the casting directors a recording of me and my boyfriend singing ‘A Whole New World’. Like I said, I didn’t think I would be cast so I didn’t think much of it. So when they asked me to go with Mena to a recording studio, I was shocked.” You explained, motioning to Mena when you mentioned him.
“Pfft, she says boyfriend like her boyfriend isn’t The Shawn Mendes.” Mena rolled his eyes.
You immediately blushed at the mention of Shawn’s name. “I forget sometimes. He’s not The Shawn Mendes to me. He’s just my Shawn.” You looked behind Mikaela to see Shawn smirking at you and you smiled in response. He mouthed ‘I love you’ from across the room and you felt your ears turn scarlet and rolled your eyes at him.
Mikaela smiled at your small interaction with Shawn. “Yes, I was going to touch on that. How was Shawn with all of this? Did he come with you to set with you? How was it?”
“Shawn is always so incredibly supportive. He was almost always on set with me towards the end of filming. He helped me practice my lines and my songs. He’s just the best. Him and Mena hit it off really great, too.” You grinned.
“Did he mind the kissing scenes? Because Jasmine and Aladdin kiss twice in the movie. Was he around for those days on set?”
“I honestly don’t remember if he was there on those days. Was he?” You turned to ask Mena.
“I think he was. Wasn’t that the same day we shot the scene were you fell between the buildings?” Mena asked through his chuckles.
You rolled your eyes as you remembered. “Yeah, I remember now. He was there, but no he didn’t mind. I mean, it’s my job and he understands that. Shawn himself had to kiss someone for a music video once. We both work in the entertainment business, so we both understand when it comes to our jobs.”
“And you mentioned a recording of you and him singing ‘A Whole New World’. Have you been dabbling in music?” Mikaela smiled, knowing your answer.
In the last interview she gave you, you and her talked about you venturing into the music industry.
“I have, I have. Shawn’s been so great with letting me tag along to studio visits and writing sessions. It’s been amazing to learn from him and his team. I’ve written a few songs and recorded some. But I don’t know if they’ll ever go out or anything like that.” You shrugged.
Mena put a hand up and shook his head at you. “They will, and if they don’t I will leak them. y/n is an amazing singer, trust me. The world needs to know what she has to offer. Her performances in Aladdin weren’t even scratching the surface of her talent.”
“You’ve heard the songs?” Mikaela asked.
“Yes, and they’re amazing. y/n is a very talented musician and she’s going to be big.” Mena explained, making you blush even more.
“Oh stop it, you’re making me blush.” You said, causing all three of you to laugh.
“And the duet you and Shawn recorded, would you ever be willing to the post that?” Mikaela asked, bringing up the cover of ‘A Whole New World’ you mentioned earlier.
“I don’t know, we’ll see.”
When the interview was over, you were pulled to the side by Shawn. “Hey there. You listened?” You asked, placing your hands on his chest.
“Mhm, I hated the part about the carpet.” Shawn mumbled. “We never got to get on it ourselves, just you and me.”
You pouted and put your hand up to his face. “I know, baby. You know they said we couldn’t get on the crane again. I wish we could have. I really wanted to go on a magic carpet ride with you.” You smirked, hoping to elicit a laugh from your boyfriend and succeeding.
“We’re gonna do it, though.” He said, very much determined.
“Oh, yeah? How so?”
“Do you trust me?” Shawn laughed, quoting Mena as Aladdin.
“Oh, shut up.” You laughed, making sure to watch out for what Shawn had up his sleeve.

You stumbled around God knows where with Shawn leading the way. You itched under the blindfold Shawn refused to leave without putting on you.
“Don’t take it off!” Shawn scolded.
“I’m won’t, I won’t. Shawn, where the hell are we?” You giggled.
“You’ll see. Just a little more. Come on, this way.” Shawn dropped your hand from his and your heard him opening a large door.
You heard Shawn flip a switch and large industrial type lights could be heard as they turned on. A very familiar sound to you.
“Shawn?” Your arms flailed around you as you tried to get his hand back in yours.
“Yes, y/n?” You could hear the smirk in Shawn’s voice as he replied.
“Are we- are we on a set?” Your arms were still stuck straight out, looking for him.
“Mhm.” You felt him wrap you up in his arms from behind.
“Why?” You leaned back and nuzzled into his forearm.
“Take off your blindfold.” You immediately took off the scratchy material and let your eyes adjust to the light.
When your eyes finally took in what was in front of you, you were confused. There was a fake sandy cliff set up in the middle of a desert like set. On the cliff was a familiar piece from the Aladdin set. You walked forward to look closer.
“Is that the magic carpet? Shawn, what’s going on?” You turned to see Shawn holding a bouquet of your favorite flowers, the rosiest blush dusting his cheeks.
The speakers starting playing the starting notes of ‘A Whole New World’ and you realized what was going on.
The day you and Mena were filming the carpet scene was when Shawn began showing his dislike for Mena. You guys ended up being stuck on the green board that would later be turned into the magic carpet. The crane that was holding up the green board malfunctioned. You and Mena were stuck there for a short amount of time. But it was enough for Shawn to get into his head.
"I told you, I want to take you on a magic carpet ride.” Shawn shrugged, taking your hand and leading you to the small cliff. The steps carved into the back of the cliff were sprinkled with rose petals and strategically placed candles.
You sat gingerly on the carpet where Shawn had set up a picnic of chocolate covered strawberries and small baked goods. “This is too much, my love.”
“Everything in the world wouldn’t be to much if it’s for you, princess.”
“How did you get all this done?” You asked, your curiosity getting the best of you.
“Someone said they’d do anything for me. I took them up on that offer.” Shawn smiled and looked up to the control room across the set.
In the control room was Mena, he grinned incredibly wide and sent you a thumbs up. He dimmed the lights and made the backdrop behind you move so it looked like you were flying.
Laughter bubbled up your throat at how cliche everything was. “You find this funny?”
“A little. But in a good way. I love it, Shawn. Thank you.” You picked up a strawberry and leaned over to give it to Shawn. “Ugh, the cliche is killing me here.”
Suddenly, you heard the shutter of a camera beneath the cliff. You peered over and saw Josiah smirking at you.
“Is that Josiah? Shawn, you’re taking out all the stops here.” You chuckled.
Shawn opened the basket and shuffled through the items to find something. “You haven’t seen everything yet.” From the basket he produced the hat Prince Ali wore in the musical number by the same name and Jasmine’s blue headpiece. “I can’t take you on a magic carpet ride without being the prince himself, you know that.”
“Oh of course, I’m sorry.” You chuckled. You took the head piece from Shawn and placed it on your head. Shawn leaned over and fixed the blue plastic jewel’s position on your forehead. He leaned back and grinned to himself. “Shawn this is ridiculous.”
“Hey, let me live out this fantasy. I just wanna have some strawberries with my princess. On a magic carpet."
“And the have most ridiculous photos ever taken of us?” You said, looking over to see Josiah still clicking away at his camera. You made a face at him and heard him laugh quietly, probably at the picture he got of it.
“Maybe.”

My commander decks, Pt. 2
I don’t like leaving these two-parters open for too long, so I’m gonna nip this one in the bud now.
Zada, Hedron Grinder- Mono-Red Storm/Tokens
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Zada deck came from having played a weird Red/Green Werewolves/Zada Aggro/Combo deck in Shadows over Innistrad standard, and then getting to come back to it some time later since a lot of those cards took a really long time to rotate out for some reason. The deck was, admittedly, kind of a pile, but it was huge fun and could just kill people out of nowhere. This commander deck, based on a very well-put-together list on tappedout, spawned from how much I ended up loving Zada, with her unique effect lending surprisingly well to an all-in combo deck.
Tumblr media
This deck doesn’t come out of the box very often, and for pretty good reason. Not a lot of people appreciate getting combo’d off against, especially when it’s as loose and indeterminate as this deck is, and there is just so much math involved that even piloting it can become a pain. It’s incredibly powerful, being fragile in some ways but resilient in ways you wouldn’t expect. It’s actually probably the closest thing to a cEDH deck I have, though it would obviously stand no chance at an actually competitive table.
Tumblr media
The deck, at this point, has deviated pretty heavily from the primer it was based on, both since I don’t want to buy overpriced cards that aren’t significant upgrades and because I have some jankier effects I wanted to play (also, because that list has been consistently updated and mine hasn’t). I’ve had it called a Goblins deck, and while there are a lot of Goblin cards in it (I mean, Goblin Matron is there), it actually kinda gets under my skin when people do that. It’s not a Goblin deck, Goblins just happen to be really good at making tokens! I don’t really like Goblins. (Zada is an exception.)
Basandra, Battle Seraph- Boros Forced Combat/Pillowfort
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basandra was one of four decks I built after I got really bored, hit Random 4 times on EDHRec, and designed four decks based on the results. While I did end up proxying up 2 of the others (Seizan Mono-B Group Sl/hug, DL Atarka Dragons/Panharmonicon), Basandra was the only one that resonated with me enough to want to build it for real. It represents to me the possibilities of Boros beyond just aggro and the handful of archetypes the colour pair has been crumbed over the years.
Tumblr media
It also happens to be a pretty political deck. While the plan of making people fight each other instead of me is all well and good, in a perfect situation you’re still going to have one more opponent left to deal with. The deck is pretty light in ways to actually win the game, although having a Flying commander does help a little bit (See, she does do something!). With that said, I’ve played the deck enough times to have racked up a few wins, so it’s far from helpless, and the random hate pieces that are mostly in to keep people from going over my defences can just lock some decks out of the game. (If you’re a deck that loses to Aven Mindcensor then you deserve to lose to Aven Mindcensor, sorry)
I really enjoy the Thalia’s Lancers package. Tutors like this and like Mwonvuli Beast Tracker in the Radha deck are fun to build around, with the right combination of cards letting them turn into mini toolboxes. In this deck, the Lancers can find land, ramp, removal, pillowfort effects, card draw, making them extremely versatile. While I am generally opposed to tutors, Lancers get a pass.
 O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami- 5-Colour Spirit Tribal/Cast Triggers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This deck is stupid bad but it’s built around a bunch of silly cards that I love. The spirits of Kamigawa look and feel bizarre, but in an elegant way- they’re off in their own little world, doing whatever, while the rest of the game happens around them.
Unfortunately, most of them kinda suck. There’s a reason I didn’t build around Soulshift, and it’s not because I’d die to Rest in Peace.
Tumblr media
This deck, therefore, is an eclectic collection of spirits, good and bad, with the stated goal of finding enough cost reduction to start loop-casting members of the -Onna cycle, generating value through “whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell
” effects. Getting to this point, however, is it’s own endeavour. The deck is desperately in need of a rebuild, with way too high a curve and not enough ramp to support itself. The deck includes the entirety of the Myojin cycle, all 5 Dragon Spirits, and all 3 pieces of Iname- not to mention, most of the Spirits that actually have good effects are fairly mana-hungry themselves. Even the manabase is a bit silly, though I have gotten away with proxying fetches and shocks since the deck doesn’t need any help flopping.
Tumblr media
When the deck does get going, though, it can get pretty out of hand. Literally, in fact-the deck can rip through people’s hands and occasionally lands, but the cards doing so are so expensive and bad that it feels more earned than just dropping Narset/Windfall or Armageddon. No-one can stay mad when they lose to Myojin of Infinite Rage, since the Myojin is the one with all the Rage. It can be resilient as well, with great recursion effects such as Karador and Iname, Life Aspect just happening to be Spirits. It’s still not good, but it’s something.
Gonti, Lord of Luxury- Mono-Black Theft/Control
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Zada, Gonti spawned from a standard deck I enjoyed playing, in this case the Azor’s Gateway Mono-Black Control deck I piloted to surprising success for a long time. A fair few cards in the deck come directly from that list, including the incredibly water-damaged Torment of Hailfire and some of the weirdo one ofs like Tetzimoc and Liliana, Death’s Majesty. The deck is grindier than anything, with incremental draw being the name of the game and murdering opponent’s threats the subtitle. Gonti, in addition to being one of my favourite cards of all time, supports Mono-Black Control quite well, being able to grab answers to things that would normally be pretty difficult for mono-B to handle off of other people’s decks, or creating synergies where no-one expects them. As a result, while there’s not as many of this type of effect as many Gonti decks, there is still some amount of cards that let Gonti re-enter than most decks they helm, there’s still a fair few ways to do so.
Tumblr media
Theft is not a particularly well-supported strategy, especially in Black, but it serves to add replayability and versatility to the deck. The deck doesn’t play a huge number of threats, and most of the ones that it does are those that add to the steady value train or that double as something else. I haven’t quite committed to putting Praetor’s Grasp in, but I’m thinking about it. I also opted not to add in the new hotness of Opposition Agent, because as it turns out that’s not the kind of magic I want to play, and with a full hand and frequent planeswalkers on the board I don’t really need to go out of my way to generate more hate.
Playing this deck does harken back to that old standard deck, thinking ahead about which cards I need to keep around to answer certain threats I guess are coming up, and getting unexpected surprises off the top of my opponent’s library to win in unexpected ways (I once Gonti’d a Radiant Destiny off of my opponent’s Vampire deck, realised between Gonti and a few Gifteds I had a pile of Aetherborn cooking, and beat them down with that). Control is far from my favourite deck archetype, but it’s nice to have the option there if I want it.
 Hallar, the Firefletcher- Gruul Kicker
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Hallar deck was given to me as part of the EDH subreddit’s Secret Santa, the maybe only year it was ran, and it still shows some evidence of the budget limit that exchange carried. While I have done my best to improve on it and diversify it, there’s really only so much one can do with such a narrow commander.
Tumblr media
With that said, it’s not like the deck is bad. Especially since the addition of more Kicker cards in Zendikar Rising, Hallar has more option to choose from, and they can get burning very quickly. From what I’ve seen, however, most Hallar decks build around cheap Kicker costs, trying to trigger their ability as many times as possible as quickly as possible. And while some of these cheaper cards are of course present in my list, I chose to instead play some of the other bigger kicker cards, along with more ramp, to help spread the attention away from Hallar as needed and to give the deck something to do if they start costing upwards of 10 mana. I’m not convinced this added resilience is the correct path, but it’s my path, and the deck performs admirably even faced against substantially more expensive lists.
With that, I have listed all of my current commander decks. While I have a few in the build process, maybe I should stop? Because 10 is likely enough. Either way, I hope you enjoyed reading about what and why these decks are, and I hope to see you on the other side of a table soon. (I won’t play Zada game one, promise.)

Tutorial about Data manipulation - SQL Server
Welcome to this was our tutorial in this video we're going to look at D ml or data manipulation, language triggers in Microsoft, sequel, server, we'll begin the video with a quick look at what triggers actually are and how DML triggers fittings a bigger picture will then look At the data manipulation events that you can attach your triggers to and then show you the difference between an after trigger and an instead of trigger when we've covered the basics. We'Ll look at how you can use the inserted and deleted tables to get access to the data that your triggers might work on and, finally, we'll show you a practical example of using triggers and inserted tables to validate the data, that's being added to your database. So, let's get started in sequel server. A trigger is a special kind of stored procedure that you can attach to various events which happen in your database.
They come in three main flavors, there's D ml or data manipulation, language triggers. There are d dl or data definition, language triggers and then finally, there are logon triggers in this video we're going to focus on the d ml triggers and as I've already mentioned, it stands for data manipulation, language that basically corresponds to three main events. That can happen in your database. These are the insert, update and delete events. These events are associated with tables or views in your database, and the DML triggers can be attached to either a table or a view, and they can be one of two types. They can be either an after or run instead of trigger, and this video is going to explain how all of that works. We'Ll start by showing you how you can create basic DML triggers attached to a table before you create a trigger at SQL Server
You need to decide which table or view in your database you want to attach it to. In this example, we're going to attach a trigger to the actor table in our movies database. There'S a couple of ways to achieve adding a trigger to a table. One way is to find the table in the tables: folder expand the table itself and find the triggers folder. You can then right-click on the folder and choose new trigger and that will create a page of horrible-looking the system generated code. What you would have to do now is you would have to modify this code to make it fit the trigger that you want to create. Personally, I prefer not to do that. I'M gon na close this window down and instead I'm going to create a brand new blank query window and in this window I can write out the code that will create my trigger I'll begin with the use statement to make sure that we're working in the correct Database and go to ensure that the next statement will be the first one in the batch, and then this is the simple statement that you use to create a trigger literally create trigger, followed by whatever name you want your trigger to have I'm going to start my
With with the letters TRG, anything that is a trigger and I'm going to call it actor's changed following that, you need to say which table or view the crip they're the trigger is created for, and you do that with an on statement, we say on TBL actor In this case, after this, you have to decide whether your trigger will be an after trigger or an instead of trigger, as I mentioned very briefly earlier, on and after trigger will run immediately after the events you set it for and an instead of trigger will run In place of the events, in this case, we're going to use an after trigger and following this keyword, you list out which events you want the trigger to handle, so, for instance, if I only wanted to handle the insert event for this table, I could say, after Insert but I can actually extend this to handle two or three events, so if I wanted this to handle any data change event in my entire actors table, I could add on the word updates, followed by the word, delete separated by commas, and this trick will handle
Every single beta modification event in that table final, a couple of key words to add the word as and it's useful to have a begin and an end statement followed by the word, go and inside the begin and end block. We can actually write out what we want our trigger to do this one's not going to be very complicated at all. In fact, all it's going to do is print a message to the messages window to tell us that something has happened in the actor's table. So we can use a print statement and say something happened to the actor table very, very simply, okay, so all we need to do now is execute the code create the trigger itself and when we do that, we should see the nice message commands completed successfully. So now that we've created the trigger we'll need some way to test that it works and basically, in order to do that, we need to trigger one of these three events.
Either inserts and records into that table update a record in there will delete something actually written a bit of code already here's one I prepared earlier to do exactly that, so I've turned off. The row counts just to tidy up the output, so we can see a little bit more clearly what's going on and then three separate statements basically want to insert a new record into the outer table want to update that record and then another one finally to delete It again, so if I execute that code, what we should see is three messages: one for each event that has caused our trigger to fire. Let'S have a quick look at how you could choose to modify your trigger if you wanted to change the way that it worked, and if you still have the original code available that you used to create the trigger in the first place, you can easily just head Back to it, modify the word create to the word altar and then maybe change something about your.
What your trigger does so, maybe, instead of something happened, I'll put a more more specific message: theta was changed in the outer table. There we go. If I execute this code now, it will modify the way the trigger works, and if I head back to my test code, when I run this one again I'll see a different message this time. So that's one way to modify a trigger, just use the original code that you used to create it in the first place. If you've made the mistake - and you haven't saved that code or you've lost it, you can also get back to changing a trigger through the object Explorer.
So if you expand your databases folder through the app to table and into the triggers folder you'll see that any triggers you've created will be listed there. Sometimes you might find that you need to refresh this list first. So if you right-click the triggers folder and choose to refresh it, I mean it wasn't, there will appear, then you can right-click the trigger that you want to modify and click the modify option and that will take you to some system generated code that will allow you To modify the way that it works, if you wanted to delete a trigger rather than modify it again, there are two different ways to do that. If you head to the object, Explorer window and again browse through your database, the tables folder the table, which contains your trigger and into the triggers folder, you can right-click the trigger that you want to remove and choose to delete it. When the dialog box appears, all you need to do then is click the ok button,
I'm not going to do that's how much you're going to show you how you can also write some code to do the same thing. So if I cancel from this dialog box in any query window effectively, if I create a brand new blank one, I make sure I'm using the Craig database so use movies and go, I can simply say, to drop a trigger. I could spell trigger properly. That would help and then the trigger I've created, which was TRG actors changed. If I execute this code now the trigger will be removed from the from the table. So that means that if I find any sample code that previously showed as this information when data was changing that dis table, if I execute this code now, I don't see any such messages because the trigger has been removed. So we've seen an example of a symbol. After trigger, let's have a look at how to create an instead of trigger as well.
You begin in the same way as for creating an after trigger, with the words create trigger, and then the name that you want your trigger to have I'm going to call this one actor inserted. You then say what table you want the trigger to be created on and again in our case, it's going to be on the TBL actor. Then you say rather than after we say instead of and then again we list out which events we want our trigger to be attached to previously we listed insert, update and delete in a comma separated list. In this example, I'm only going to attach the trigger to the insert event. Then we have a couple of other key words to fill in the as keyword and we'll have a beginning and an end block and the go statement. And then inside the beginning end block.
We can decide what we want our trigger to do pretty viously, we used a very simple print statement to print some information to the messages window. In this example, what I'd like to do is use the raise error statement to raise a proper error message to the system. I don't want to go into too much detail about how this statement works. If you're really interested a quick, google will will turn about help. Page on the Microsoft developer Network site, which explains all about how to raise error statement works. What we're going to do is we're going to provide a custom error message. What you're going to say normal actors can be inserted. We'Re also going to provide a severity level for our error and also a state, so the three values that have to be filled in, and just remember that also you have to enclose the arguments for this statement in a set of parentheses. There we go, and that is exactly one of our trigger will do whenever anybody tries to in certain and actor interview outer table.
The system will raise an error instead, so I'm going to execute this code to create the trigger, and then what we will need to do is test if it works so to test that this trigger does its job. We can run some sample code to try to insert a new actor into the actors table, so I've turned off the row counts again, as I did in the previous previous example. Then I tried to insert an actor into the actors table and then I've tried to select the record inserted where the actors ID is 999, which is the value I've passed into the in certainty statement. If I execute this query, what RTC is what looks like a system-generated error message as an error number? It has a severity level 16 and the state of 1. It also has our customized error message. No more actors can be inserted just to prove that the actor hasn't been inserted into that table.
This select star from daylight to where the actors ID is 999. If we look at the results panel, we will see that we don't return any records. So that's the difference between an instead of and an after trigger the instead of trigger completely replaces what the original event would have done. Often it can be useful for your triggers to have access to the data. That'S been modified in one of the data modification events and, for this reason, you've got access to two tables, the inserted table and the deleted table. The inserted table is used in the insert and update events, and the deleted table is used in the delete and update events. To show you how you can quickly use one of those I'm going to make a modification to the trigger that we created earlier.
Where we're inserting an actor into the actors table, I'm going to replace the word create with our adulterer and instead of making it an instead of trigger. I'M going to make this an after trigger I'm going to remove the error message that we hear that we raised previously and I'm going to replace that with a select statement. But it's going to select everything from a table called inserted. You can see that the inserted table appears automatically in the intellisense list. This is a built-in part of any database. So if I execute this code to modify my trigger, I can then run some sample code that will try to insert a record into the actors table. So here it is it's going to insert a new record with an ID of 909 into the actors table. If I execute that code, you can see, although I didn't ask it to select anything in the code that I've written, I see the record that has been inserted listed below and the reason that's happened is purely because that's what my trigger has been told today.
So there we go, the insert a table shows you. Any records have been inserted into the table in the insert event. You can use the insert a table to help you with the validation of data in your database. So what we're going to do to demonstrate? That is create a new trigger called TRG cast member added we're going to attach that to the cast table, and it's going to run after a record is inserted into that table. The idea is that we're trying to make sure that the actor were assigning to a role is valid. The criteria we're going to use actually made a quick modification to the at table to include an extra field. So if you look in the list of columns or the outer table, I've actually just included an extra belong called up to date of death is a bit of a morbid example, but we're going to record when an actor died.
We'Re gon na make sure that we don't, then us try to assign them to a new role in a new film. So if I have a quick look at the data store in that table, we've got our new actor inserted from a previous example, and the ID number is 999 and I've set the date of death for that actor to today's date. None of the other actors have a date of death inserted, so it's just that single one. What we're going to do is write our trigger so that it checks if the ID of the actor that's included in the inserted table, matches an actor whose date of death is not null. Then we're going to stop and allowing the user to add that actor. To that particular role, so to make my trigger work, I need to check whether the actor whose ID I'm inserting into the cast table has his or her date of death fill them and to do that, I'm going to use an if exists within my trigger inside
The set of parentheses, what I'm going to do then, is write a simple select statement, so I'm going to select everything from TBL actor, I'm going to give it going to give that an alias as a I'm going to join that to with an inner join. I'M going to join it to the inserted table, I'm going to give that an alias as I, the fields that I'm going to join on are a doctor ID and I'm going to check why that is equal to i dot cast actor ID all. I need to do now is add a where clause to the query, to check where actor data death is not null, so that, if statement will return true, if the actor whose whose idea mean setting into the cast table, has his data death filled in? What do I want to do if that is true, I'm going to write a begin, an end block below my if statement, because there's several actions,
I'd like to perform. First of all, as we saw earlier on, I'm going to raise an error message to the system and the error that I'm going to raise is going to have a message of something like sorry and that act or has expired. It'S a bit of a mobile example, but there we go I'm going to give it a severity of 16 and a state of 1. What I'd also like to do is make sure that the the insert doesn't carry through. So I want to make sure I've rolled back my transaction that will be occurring at that point. We'Ve got separate videos on on transaction, so, if you're not sure about what transactions mean, roughly speaking, it cancels the insert and we've got a much more detailed video. That explains that in a lot more air more detail. Finally, what I'd also like to do is return at that point on this entire procedure to be ended at that point. So what I should be able to do now is execute this script to create that trigger, and all that remains is for me to test that it works in the way I've intended.
Ok. So here we are ready to test our trigger. I'M going to try to insert a new record into the cast table. I should assign some not quite random values, but a new ID number for the cast ID, which I have to provide the first actor that I'm going to try to insert is actually one who does exist and who is not a deceased. So Tom Cruise's I've tried a number one and I'm going to insert him into film number 333, which happens to be the latest Star, Trek movie star trek into darkness and he's going to be inserted with a cast with a roll of random a redshirt. So because Tom Cruise's date of death is currently null the system will allow me to insert him as a cast member into this film, and I execute this query. Everything will work exactly as intended. What happens now, if I modify first of all I'll, add another value to the cast ID and instead of inserting Tom Cruise into the role, what I'm now going to do is insert actor number 999, which, if you remember briefly from earlier on, I showed you was
The new actor that I we just sort of generic on that we've made up the ID number is 999 and clearly the date of death field is not null. So if I try to execute this same script now to insert the new matter, I will actually get a an error message. So we see the customer ID, we created, sorry that actor has expired and we can see that the transaction that I rollback has been aborted. So that actor does not end up that role does not end up being created because the actor has expired. So, as I say, it's a little bit of a morbid example, but hopefully you can see how you could use triggers to enforce your business logic. Your your validation rules, you can use the inserted table to check whether the values that are being inserted into your tables match criteria based on values contained in other tables, not something you can't do using simple validation rules. So hopefully, that gives you a nice overview of how basic triggers work in sequel, server hope you've enjoyed the video thanks for watching. How I Help My Girl as a Medical Alert and Response Dog
To read the original blog post, click here.
TW: self-harm mention
Tumblr media
This photo was taken while I was just finishing up doing Deep Pressure Therapy for my girl. I moved to her legs because her body had already started responding to the pressure I'd been putting on her chest earlier, so she just needed some final grounding before this episode passed. You can see from my face how seriously I take my job!
A Medical Alert Service Dog performs a trained behaviour to indicate that their handler is about to have or is currently having a medical episode,* and a Medical Response Service Dog helps a handler who has a medical disability.  Both types of Service Dogs can assist with a range of medical conditions, from epilepsy to type 1 diabetes, and from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome to narcolepsy, and everything in between.  It's not uncommon for a dog who is a Medical Response Service Dog to also be a Medical Alert Service Dog, because we dogs are perceptive creatures with strong noses and will often pick up on our handler's changes in body chemistry.  Remember, though, that a Service Dog under the ADA must be "individually trained" in the task(s) that they perform for their disabled handler.  This means that a dog who performs a natural medical alert does not qualify as a Service Dog in the US unless that alert is reinforced by the handler (or a trainer) since the Service Dog must be "trained to take a specific action" under the ADA.  As a Service Dog for my girl, I am both a Medical Alert and Medical Response Service Dog because I perform tasks both that alert her to a medical episode and that are in response to medical episodes.
Because my girl has such a broad range of symptoms, I also have a variety of alert behaviours so that I can tell her exactly what's going on with her body.
As I explained in my post about my Psychiatric Service Dog tasks, I alert my girl to rising anxiety and incoming panic attacks through a variety of her body's signals.  One of the very first tasks I learned to help my girl was pawing with increasing intensity in order to interrupt her when she starts nervous-scratching or picking at herself.  Her anxiety causes her to do this unknowingly, often to the point where she bleeds, and since the scabs that form become itchy, the cycle can continue quite easily -- so the trick is interrupting the cycle so that she can catch herself before she starts bleeding, which is exactly what I do!  This pawing also acts as an anxiety alert because the scratching indicates that her anxiety is rising close to the point of "no return."  I can also alert to increasing heart rate or elevated cortisol as signs that her anxiety is rising, as well as to her anxious "hand flapping" that she does as a physical anxiety tic, and I use a paw for these as well so that all anxiety alerts are clumped together into one behaviour.
A couple years ago, my girl added a hypoglycemia alert to my repertoire of tasks.  Her GI issues are understandably the (most likely) culprit of her drops in blood sugar, which itself causes an assortment of un-fun symptoms, but the situation is even more nuanced than that: thanks to my girl's chronic nausea, she often doesn't want to eat, but she has to be careful because blood sugar dipping too low can be a trigger for her migraines, which can last multiple days.  As you can imagine, my girl is grateful for any kind of preventative action!  My hypoglycemia alert can tell her when she absolutely needs to push past her nausea, even if eating causes its own form of discomfort, because that discomfort is the lesser of the two potential evils.  I currently alert with a nose "boop" when her meter reads 80 mg/dL or lower.  Sometimes I do a "chin rest" with a serious look on my face, and although this is my default "there's something wrong with you but I'm not formally trained to alert to it" behaviour, my girl has learned that sometimes I do this instead of a nose boop .  My girl hasn't yet figured out if this is because her low blood sugar stems from two different causes, and since I'm a dog, I can't really communicate my reasoning to her.  For the time being, we're treating it as a training glitch, and she keeps reinforcing the "boop" whenever I offer the "chin rest" instead.  When I learned my hypoglycemia alert, I also learned the Breath Check command, where my girl leans down so I can sniff her breath better.  This behaviour helps reassure my girl that my alert was a true alert and not just an accidental nose boop, because if I still give the nose boop after a Breath Check, then my girl knows to definitely check her blood sugar.
If you've read this far, you've already learned that my girl has migraines, and they most likely have a genetic component to them because they run in her family.  Although my girl knows some triggers for her migraines -- pressure changes due to thunderstorms, low blood sugar -- these migraines are tricksters and don't always let her know what causes them.  That's where I can help!  I have a migraine alert where I gently "mouth" my girl on the hand in order to let her that a migraine is coming on.  This behaviour lets her know to take her migraine medication, which can help lessen the impact and also duration of the migraine (however, it's not perfect and sometimes her migraines ignore medication completely).  We haven't figured out a way for me to tell my girl how long her migraine is going to last, since it would be helpful to know if one is going to last 9 days or only a few hours, but hey, at least I can sometimes give her a bit of warning and that's better than nothing!
My newest medical alert (that I'm still perfecting, by the way) is to my girl's fatigue crashes.  For a period of time after my girl exerts herself either physically or mentally, even to an extent that most normal people would consider "minor," she experiences a major energy crash, often accompanied by a "flare up" of other symptoms like chronic pain, anxiety, overstimulation (aka lots and lots of tears), or headaches and even her migraines.  With these crashes, she can often barley think coherently, let alone function like a normal person, and even walking can sometimes feel like an insurmountable feat.  When I give her an alert to an impending fatigue crash, I'm letting her know that she's going down fast so she needs to get herself ready for that, whether it's getting water to put beside her bed, finding the nearest dark and quiet space, or emailing someone to cancel plans while she still has the brain power to do so.  Anyone who knows my girl knows that her face has it's own "alert" -- her cheeks turn lobster-red immediately before a fatigue crash.  However, my alerts help for two main reasons: first, fatigue crash-to-lobster face isn't a 1:1 ratio and my girl can crash without lobster-ing, and second, fatigue crashes can happen in a time frame ranging from immediately after an exertion to a day or so after doing the exertion.  My absence of an alert reassures my girl that she has at least a little more time to live her life normally, so my alerts offer her some predictability, which is nice to have when your chronic illness is largely unpredictable.
I want to take a moment to note that my medical alerts vary in how good I am at performing them.  Medical alerting has probably been my biggest training struggle, so my girl and I still practice with scent samples quite frequently (and if you want to learn how I was taught to alert to medical episodes, click here).
If I alert my girl to her rising anxiety or an impending panic attack, one of the ways she can respond to that alert is by asking me to perform Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), which is a form of firm sensory input that results in a calming effect for the body.  I do DPT for my girl by lying on her chest preferably, especially because it forces her to take deep breaths instead of hyperventilating, but I can also lie across her legs if we're not in a situation where she can lie down fully.   My body weight acts to quiet her sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for her "fight or flight" response, and instead activates her parasypathetic nervous system, which is responsible for her "rest and digest" response and therefore is associated with decreased anxiety.  As a result, her panic symptoms decrease, and she can eventually continue her life as normal.  DPT may look like "just cuddling," but - scientifically - it's so much more!  I can also do deep pressure therapy for her chronic pain, most often my girl's hips.  My body heat acts like a hot water bottle to soothe her joints.
When my girl has one of her migraines, I can respond by doing forward momentum pulling, where I act like a dog-sized tugboat by pulling into my harness.  Many people think of migraines as "just a headache," but migraines are actually a neurological problem.  My girl's migraines "scramble" her brain and make it short-circuit on her, even if she has taken medication to get rid of the pain.  Navigation can be a little tricky with a brain that's not cooperating, especially in a crowded area.  Add in light sensitivity due to the migraine and navigation can be just downright difficult.  But that's where I can help!  Because my forward momentum pulling as a guiding aspect to it, I make sure that my girl gets safely where she needs to go.  She can just close her eyes against the light if need be, and I'll weave around people and other moving obstacles as needed.  The pulling aspect of this task also helps with my girl's balance, which is often thrown off by her brain's migraine "scrambling."  I know how to find a few locations, lead her to a handful of important people in her life, and follow an indicated person.  Sometimes words are tricky when my girl has a migraine and she'll trip over her words while trying to tell me where to go or what to do, but luckily I know her well enough after four years of being her pup that I can interpret her vague gesturing pretty accurately.
Of course, I can also perform forward momentum pulling when my girl's fatigue is flaring, even if I often do it to save her energy.  When I pull her along, she doesn't use quite as much energy while walking and therefore doesn't get tired as quickly as she would walking on her own.  Of course, the energy saved isn't vast, but every little erg of energy is necessary when you start your day short on spoons.  When I do forward momentum pulling for my girl when she's experiencing fatigue, it can make a huge difference in whether or not she can accomplish a task.
Moving to a home with more space has meant that I've been able to expand my tasks in migraine response.  Over the course of the past year, I've learned how to open doors using a special tug, as well as closing them with my nose.  I have slowly begun learning how to turn light switches on and off all by myself.  Being able to close doors and turn off the lights is helpful for my girl's migraines because she can get very light and sound sensitive.  However, the pounding in her head gets worse with any small movement, so if I can save her getting out of bed, I prevent her from having to endure that pain.  Similarly, I can do both of these tasks when my girl is having a high pain or fatigue day and appreciates whenever I can save her from doing even small actions, like when I help her undress at night.
Opening and closing doors has led to another task that I'm currently working on: retrieving a bottle of ginger ale from a specific spot in the fridge.  In order to complete this task, I need to know how to open the fridge with a tug, grab the drink in its special holder (since its glass and therefore slippery), deliver the bottle to my girl in another room, and then return to close the fridge.  Assuming I'm in my girl's bedroom with her, I would also have to open and close her bedroom door as well.  That's a lot for a pup to remember to do!  It's taking a lot of practice (and many treats!), but I'm starting to learn what I need to do.  Once I've perfected this task, I'll be able to respond to my girl's bouts of bad nausea by bringing her a bottle of ginger ale.
You may have noticed that there's a lot of overlap between my psychiatric tasks, my mobility tasks, and my medical alert/response tasks.  One symptom can be helped by many tasks, and one task can simultaneously help many symptoms.  My girl's health issues are often interconnected and have similar symptoms, so it makes sense that my tasks can overlap to help multiple aspects of her health.  I have a lot of aspects of my job, it's true, but I'm a pup that needs a job and needs to be mentally stimulated -- my foster mom knew this when she was trying to find me a fur-ever home, and so far, thanks to my girl's ever-fluctuating symptoms, there's been no shortage of work for me to do in this fur-ever home.  And as a bonus, I get paid with fetch, and that's a pretty good trade-off in my opinion!
* Some people classify Medical Alert Dogs as only those dogs who alert their handlers before a medical event occurs, but we're including dogs who alert both before an episode and during episode (e.g. since dogs who assist diabetics are usually called Diabetic Alert Dogs, even though most of the time, they're alerting to a handler's already high or low blood sugar level - although some also alert to rapidly rising or rapidly lowering blood sugar levels).

India vs West Indies 3rd ODI Highlights: Shubman Gill Stars With 98 & thrash Windies by 119 runs
India vs West Indies 3rd ODI HIGHLIGHTS: India bundled out West Indies for 137 to win the third ODI by 119 runs (DLS Method).
Tumblr media
In what can only be called an innings of supreme class, Shubman Gill missed out on a century by just two runs in India vs West Indies 3rd ODI. The Indian cricket team has started the ODI series against the West Indies on a high, winning all three matches so far. Under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan, the Men in Blue have looked in great form, and they carry this momentum into the rest of the series.
The first two ODIs were pretty competitive, and India truly dominated all three matches. Their top three batters clicked once again, and the bowlers kept things tight at the other end. As a result, the West Indies never really got going, and India ended up winning by a comfortable margin.

In the 3rd ODI between India and West Indies, 22-year-old Indian batsman Shubman Gill impressed everyone with his batting skills, falling just two runs short of a century. Gill has been in excellent form throughout the series, and his innings of 98 runs off just 98 balls helped India to set a formidable target of 225 runs. He played some beautiful shots all around the ground. Unfortunately, Gill was dismissed in the final over, meaning that he narrowly missed out on what would have been a well-deserved century. Nevertheless, his performance was still very impressive, and he will no doubt continue to be a key player for India in the future.
Earlier in the day, after electing to bat, the Indian openers got their side off to a lovely start before rain intervened. It was the Shubman Gill show post the rain break and he deserved a ton. It would have well been one had rain not played a part and cut short the Indian innings. However, the hosts had to chase a target of 257 in 35 overs which they failed to do so comprehensively.
All the bowlers bowled well on the Indian team. Everybody had a wicket to their name apart from Hooda. He thought kept it tight and did a handy play. Siraj started the proceedings and took two wickets while Yuzvendra Chahal ensured the lower order didn’t play much. He ended with four wickets. Overall, it was a comprehensive show by the Indian Team.
The start was highly unsuccessful for the Caribbeans as they lost two in one over. Then Shai Hope and Brandon King steadied the ship but Hope fell when it was time to accelerate. Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran then tried to get things on track but whenever the Windies looked like getting a move on, they lost a wicket. They needed someone to go big but that wasn’t the case and in the end, they have not even come close to the target.
Shikhar Dhawan shared his words, “I feel the boys are young, but they played maturely. The way they handled and managed themselves on the field, I am proud of them. This is a very good sign for us. I am quite pleased with my form, I have been playing this format for a long time.”
Further adding, “I was happy with the way I played that knock, in the first ODI. And even today, happy with my performance. The way he scored those 98 runs, was astonishing to watch. The way all the boys responded, was pretty amazing. We feel lucky to come here, and we are thankful to the crowd. They make us more popular. I am proud of our bowling unit, they gave their hundred percent. The way Siraj took those two wickets and Shardul and others bowled.”
Nicholas Pooran: “It was a tough one for us. We did a lot of right things in the first two games. I think we tried our best, and the boys performed well. But there were a lot of games in a short period. As a batting group, it would be a challenge with DLS coming into play. We did get some partnerships, but not as many as we wanted, which cost us the game. A few inexperienced players are still figuring out how to play ODI cricket”
Further adding, “Everyone has a good idea now, looking forward to the upcoming New Zealand series. We gained a lot in this series after coming from Guyana. The bowlers bowled well in the powerplay, they didn’t get wickets, but that’s fine. The guys are getting more confident with every game. Very excited about our T20 team, and looking forward to the game on Friday. Hope that we come out and entertain the crowd.”

Shubman Gill the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series said, “Was hoping to get a hundred, but due to rain, it was not under my control. Was very disappointed with how I got out in the first two ODIs. I tried to play according to the ball and let my instincts take over. I wanted only one more over, was hoping for that. The wicket played fantastically in all three games. The ball was gripping a bit after 30 overs. Happy with my performance.”

Dirty Little Secret IV
“Alright, Finn, chill out--”
“Piss off! Do you have any idea what you’ve done? She’s never gonna talk to me again!”
Archie waved a hand dismissively.
“We’ll go over what to say, yeah? I’ll handle the gang, you handle Rae,” Archie reassured him, leading him into the lounge. Finn scoffed.
“No one handles Rae,” he retorted, a hint of pride in his voice.
Archie ignored him, pointing at the sofa for Finn to sit. He rolled his eyes, unceremoniously dropping to it.
“Right,” Archie started to speak but stopped short, a question in his eyes, “Before we start...how did this even begin? This summer you hated each other.”
Finn had the grace to look a little embarrassed but smiled wide.
“You remember that party Chop dragged us to?”
“He drags us to a lot of parties, Finn, you’ll have to be more specific,” Archie said wryly.
“The one where you got off with that bloke--what was his name again?”
Archie turned red, running a hand over his face.
“Enough said. So you two fucked at a party?” Archie changed the subject quickly, Finn smirking at him.
“In a sense,” Finn said oddly. Archie looked at him curiously but Finn remained quiet.
“Fair enough, knobhead. What’re you gonna say to her then?”
Finn shrugged a little but bit his lip as if in thought. Archie waited patiently as his best mate found the words.
“I’m sorry the secret had to come out like this. I know we agreed to just have fun and not get attached but I fancy the pants off you and...I wanna be with you.”
Archie raised his brows.
“Well, it’s a start. Let’s work on it.”
***
“Izzy, where are we going?”
“I told ya, we’re going to Chloe’s and Chop’s picking us up from there,” Izzy recited, eyes anywhere but on Rae.
“But you haven’t said why,” Rae said, staring at Izzy inquisitively. Izzy gave her an unconvincing smile.
“I thought we could all study together at Rutlands or something,” she fumbled quickly. Rae barked a laugh and gestured at the slightly darkened sky.
“You realize it’s supposed to rain, right?” she replied incredulously. Izzy grinned at her sheepishly before she tugged Rae’s arm, rushing them to Chloe standing waiting in the distance next to Chop’s car, no school books in hand.
“What’s this about, Iz? I gotta be at work in an hour,” Chop groused, waving at them to enter the car. Once they were strapped in and Chop started rolling, Izzy broke.
“We’re going to Finn’s,” she blurted, Rae immediately looking panicked before seeming to compose herself.
“For what?” she balked, crossing her arms, “I thought we needed to study.”
“We’ll find out when we get there,” she offered, revealing nothing else. Rae nudged her side a couple times, sighing when Izzy stayed silent.
***
“What’s going on, Nelson?”
“I’m so sorry,” Finn rushed to explain, shooting a dirty look at Archie. Rae narrowed her eyes at him.
“For what?”
Finn rubbed the back of his neck and looked like he wanted nothing more than to disappear.
“You don’t know?” he asked hesitantly, shooting a glance into the next room where Archie had corralled the others. Chop yelled out to them.
“C’mon knobheads, no heading off alone now!”
Rae huffed and went into the room, Finn keeping close behind. They sat on opposite sides of the loveseat, everyone’s eyes on them.
“What’s this about, then? You two shagging or something?” Chloe teased with a laugh. At the uncomfortable silence that followed, a Cheshire grin formed.
“Holy shit, you are. Rae!” she gasped, exchanging excited looks with Izzy before glaring at Rae, “Why didn’t ya tell us?”
“So that’s why you’re always sneaking off together,” Chop chortled, shaking a finger at them.
“We can double date, Rae!” Izzy chimed in, bouncing in her seat. Chloe and Archie shot her indignant glares.
“Guess we’ll just fuck off by ourselves, eh Chlo?” Archie quipped, laughing when Izzy reached over smacking at him. They stopped abruptly at Rae’s sudden voice.
“Having a laugh with Arch, huh?” she fumed, her eyes piercing into Finn like daggers.
“No! Are you daft?” He protested, shaking his head with disbelief. She stood and started for the door.
“We’re not doing this. This was all a mistake,” she declared, nearing the front door. Finn rushed after her as she cleared the threshold. Archie held up a hand when the others rose to follow.
“Let’s wait it out. They need to talk.”
***
Finn didn’t have a clue how he was going to fix this but he had to try.
“Rae! Wait!”
Rae stopped stalking down the street, whirling around to face him.
“Brilliant, Finn. How could you do it?” she asked angrily, the crack in her voice betraying her distress.
“Archie saw us this morning and I had to tell him. It’s spiraled out of bloody control from there,” Finn explained hotly, rubbing the back of his neck roughly.
“Tell him what, Finn? He wouldn’t have called a sodding intervention over a shag,” Rae shot back, Finn’s shoulders stiffening. She raised her brows expectantly and he tried swallowing the lump in his throat.
“I like you, Rae...a lot.” He took a step towards her, hand outstretched. Her eyes had widened but she moved from his reach.
“I don’t believe you,” she scoffed lightly, her arms crossing. Finn’s brows furrowed.
“I don’t care if you don’t believe me,” he said, rolling his eyes. His eyes went to the front door where the gang stood huddled together watching them. Rae huffed and turned away, hiding her face behind her hair.
“This is ridiculous,” she moaned, wrapping her arms around herself. Finn stepped closer to her  as rain began to fall, gradually coming down harder. Rae blinked through the downpour at Finn and he grabbed her wrists, pulling her arms down.
“Rae, I’m sorry that our secret came out like this. I understand if you want nowt to do with me but I gotta say that I
” Finn trailed off, intertwining their fingers, “I want you. I want all of it, not just the mindblowing sex,” Rae rolled her eyes but her lips quirked into a semblance of a smile. They were completely soaked within seconds but remained close, paying no mind.
“I wanna take you to dinners and movies and concerts and kiss you whenever I feel the urge,” he continued, bringing his face closer to hers. She looked from his eyes to his lips, leaning into him.
“Finn, we can’t,” she whispered, letting go of his hands.
“Why? I know you like me too,” Finn objected, more bravely than he felt. She shook her head ruefully.
“Because you’re an eleven and I’m a four,” she cried, her voice wavering under his confused scrutiny.
“I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about,” he said, bewildered. She laughed humorlessly.
“What would people say if they saw us together?”
“Who gives a fuck? Weren’t you the one who said it was no one’s business?” Finn argued. She shook her head.
“I was just talking bollocks, Finn. I wanted us to be a secret because I didn’t want you embarrassed to be with me.”
“That’s not your decision to make,” he insisted, “You don’t tell me who I can and can’t fancy, alright? I want the whole world to know how I feel about you,” he finished, trying to convey the chaos in his mind over her. Their eyes were locked and they were close once more, showing everything they couldn’t say. He pulled her into his arms, sighing when Rae relaxed against him.
“So what now?” she whispered, resting her head on his shoulder. He held her tighter as thunder sounded, followed by a flash of lightning across the sky.
“You’ll catch your death out there, come inside!” Izzy shrieked to them over the rain and they broke apart, grins in place before running back to the house.
“You two will have pneumonia before the week is out,” Archie tsked, throwing them both towels, “Go shower and we’ll bring you fresh clothes.”
***
Rae and Finn entered the upstairs bathroom and began peeling wet clothes off, leaving them in a pile in the corner. Now the two were completely alone, Rae seemed to relax a bit. They stepped into the shower once the water ran hot and stood under the spray facing each other.
“I really am sorry, Rae,” he sighed, running his fingers along her jaw and tucking her hair behind her ear. A mischievous grin took over her face and she put her hands on his shoulders and leaned closer.
“Show me how sorry you are.”
Finn bit his lip hard, almost drawing blood when her hands followed the water down his torso to the trail of hair at the bottom of his stomach. He released it and kissed her hard, crowding her against the wall. Rae whined when he pulled away but almost purred when his lips sucked at her neck. He made his way down, his mouth skimming her collarbone and pausing on her breasts. He ran his tongue along the valley between and tweaked her nipples between his fingertips, chuckling when she fisted a hand in his hair. Her grip loosened when he started to kneel, pressing kisses down her stomach. He groaned when her legs spread, raising one to hold against the wall.
“Always ready for me,” he said, pressing his thumb to her clit and feeling her wetness with his fingers. She moaned, moving her center against his hand. Her eyes closed and she gasped when his tongue replaced his thumb on her clit.
He knew they wouldn’t have long before the gang got suspicious of what was keeping them. He squeezed her breast in one hand, the other teasing her opening and slowly entering her. His tongue continued relentlessly and soon she was crying out his name, almost louder than the water could cover. Her leg against the wall started to shake and he released his grip on her breast to hold it steady, his jaw beginning to ache. Every noise coming from her spurred him on until her body tensed and he felt her clench around his fingers. He only stopped when she pulled his head away, shivering against him. He stood and kissed her, his mouth opening to her tongue. She wasted no time in grasping him, running her fist along his length. He grunted against her mouth, biting her bottom lip. When he released her, her mouth went to his throat, kissing and sucking. Her thumb ran over his tip and he groaned deeply.
The door rattled with loud knocks and they abruptly broke apart, Finn closing his eyes tightly.
“Fuck,” he murmured, “To be continued?”
Rae smiled and nodded, the water growing cold around them.
“To be continued.”
***
“Thought you drowned or summat,” Chop jeered, smirking at the glares he received.
“Yeah, what took so long?” Izzy asked, tilting her head. Chloe wiggled her brows at her and her face lit up, looking wide-eyed at Rae. “Cheeky,” she giggled, winking at the two. Chloe grabbed Izzy and Rae by the arm and dragged them towards the kitchen.
“We have a lot to catch up on, girls,” she chirped, Rae looking back at Finn with a pout. He smiled and watched as she left but turned to the boys when Chop cleared his throat.
“Anything else you’ve been keeping from us, Finny?”
“You know the gang has no secrets,” Archie noted, Chop nodding seriously next to him. Finn rolled his eyes but his smile stayed in place.
“I don’t think so but if I think of something, I’m sure we’ll call another bloody meeting about it,” Finn crowed, punching Archie in the bicep.
“You haven’t told Chop how it happened, numpty,” Archie said, clapping a hand to his shoulder. Finn sat on the sofa, Chop and Archie sitting across.
“It all started at a party
”
Thank you all so much for reading! This has definitely been a ride, the multi-chapter that took on a mind of its own. I might pick up this version of RaexFinn in the future but for now, catch ya at the prequel!
