I was on eBay a little while ago and ran across a listing for this gadget. I won the listing, and it arrived yesterday.

This is a TRC-3A “Detector Set,” an anti-intrusion device from the Vietnam war. You put that probe in the ground, and it detects vibrations like footsteps. Neat! Based on this photo, I figured it was missing its bag and some strap thing.

Because I am stupid, only after it arrived did it occur to me to ask: This broadcasts, what receives?

I returned to eBay to find a listing for the RC-3A “receiver.” Mystery solved. But wait, here is a listing with a receiver and two detectors with a three-cell pouch that holds all three. What exactly is this thing? Is it supposed to have a receiver and two detectors?

So I looked up the technical manual for the TRC-3A. A full AN/GSQ-151 set consists of four TRC-3A detectors in a carry case, one RC-3A receiver in a carry case, a headset, a headband, and 9V batteries.

But wait there’s more!

Each detector is set up to broadcast a different number of beeps when it detects something--one, two, three, and four. So a full set is four different TRC-3As and a receiver.

But wait there’s more!

Sets are also permanently programmed to operate on one of six different frequencies! Meaning that there are twenty-four different TRC-3As out there and six different RC-3As.

This one here broadcasts three blips at 129.000MHz.

It is useless.
