neteyam  eyed  the  woman  closely,  while  their  leaders  spoke,  she  had  been  quiet,  but  the  look  in  her  eyes  —  it  was  a  look  he  often  saw  in  kiri's  eyes  when  she  was  looking  at  something  that  only  she  could  see.  neteyam's  tail  flicked  inquisitively.  ❝  you  are  the  .  .  .  ❞  neteyam  pondered  seriously  for  a  handful  of  short  seconds  before  he  remembered  the  word,  ❝  doctor?  ❞    //    @nursc  ♡'d    for    a    starter .

no. but there's a bitterness to the thought that una must modulate before the sentiment escapes into her words. when she was an ensign, she still expected her days in starfleet to be numbered. instead, she remarks, grasping with limited success at her usual wry humor, ❛ as an ensign, I didn't think that far ahead. ❜

❛ but there's a lot I don't think I could have foreseen, even if I had. why? ❜

La'an hums. "I think we might be going circles now," she admits. She pays Una a compliment, Una gives one in return. True and deserved as it might be, La'an doesn't like when such things turn into quid pro quo, something given in expectation of another.

It doesn't completely apply here, their both genuine in their words and intention. Still, she doesn't like how muddy it's getting. La'an likes boundaries, she likes when things are neat and tidy. And while she's learning, and accepting, that life isn't so simply and clean, she won't give up the habit entirely, either.

Jack Builds Spaceboats: The Rally Vincent, Part 2: Akira-class, My Beloved

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert at this game and the information I present may be erroneous.

I love the Akira-class. I cannot overstate that. Ever since I first saw the beautiful USS Thunderchild and her sisters at the Battle of Sector 001 in Star Trek: First Contact, I have been in love with this ship.

I love that way she looks. The way her design makes her swoop. I love her lore. I love that she's basically what you get when Starfleet decides to throw subtlety out the window. I love how she's sleek and aggressive while still maintaining that Starfleet feel.

So here comes an autism rant.

The development of the Akira-class starship started after the Battle of Wolf 359, where an entire fleet of starships was annihilated by a single Borg cube in a matter of hours, if not minutes. It was a massacre, and a wake-up call. It was a reminder to Starfleet that having fighting ships, while frowned upon by Federation ideals, is an absolute necessity for the peace and safety of the Federation.

So the engineers got to work, and designed four new classes of ship designed primarily with kicking Borg ass in mind: the Defiant, the Sabre, the Norway, and the Akira. While the Defiant, Sabre, and Norway were more compact and smaller designs, the Akira-class was a full-fledged cruiser at over two-thirds the length of the massive Galaxy-class explorers.

She also had a truly massive hangar bay that ran the full length of the saucer section, allowing her to carry an unheard-of amount of support craft.

What truly set the Akira-class apart, though, was the fact that she is absolutely fucking covered in torpedo launchers. Most Starfleet ships have, at most, four torpedo launchers - two fore, two aft, with phaser arrays covering the ship (the Galaxy-class, for example, is considered a battleship with two torpedo launchers and over a dozen phaser arrays). The Akira-class has three phaser arrays. She has fifteen photon torpedo launchers. Four facing forward in the weapons pod, three on each side covering the aft port and starboard quarters in the mission pod, one in the saucer section just above the deflector dish and, most unusually, two photon torpedo launchers on each side of the saucer section facing directly port and starboard.

A big part of why I started playing Star Trek Online was because I wanted to fly an Akira-class. I longed for it. So naturally, I pounced on the opportunity the moment it presented itself.

You can imagine that it came as a bit of a shock when I learned that the torpedo-heavy cruiser-carrier I loved was, in game terms, an agile glass cannon designed to use dual cannons.

I exploded. A lot. So much so, in fact, that I straight-up swore off flying escorts almost altogether and started flying cruisers instead because they could take a goddamn hit.

I was angry, I was disappointed, and even a little heartbroken.

But as my knowledge of the game grew, I kept going back to the USS Rally Vincent, re-evaluating and tweaking, and eventually even making a ship that I felt actually worked with what an Akira-class should be.

Then, in 2022, I started seeing rumors around the STO subreddit: Cryptic was working on a Legendary Akira-class. Now, "Legendary" variants are typically only for "Hero" ships, those that served as the focus of a series (like the various Enterprises, the Defiant, and Voyager). The idea of a Legendary Akira-class was... curious, but also very very exciting.

So I immediately started saving up, and holy shit am I glad I did. When Cryptic announced the Legendary First Strike Bundle and the stats of the ships it would come with (the Legendary Multi-Mission Command Carrier and the not-talking-about-it-in-this-post Legendary Temporal Ops Strike Wing Escort Warbird), it was like Cryptic had read my Christmas list and decided I'd been such a good boy this year that I was gonna get everything I wanted.

This was finally a frame that could be an honest-to-goodness Akira-class. Still nimble, but not a dogfighter, able to take a few on the chin, packing enough firepower to make a Klingon blush, and full Command specialization seating primary and Miracle Worker secondary, giving her access to some fantastic Bridge Officer abilities and arguably the best torpedo-buffing BOFF ability in the game, Concentrate Firepower III.

It was truly an evolution of the Rally Vincent's build, going well beyond mere improvement. The advent of the Advanced Hangar consoles elevated the build even further, making her one of only a handful of ships I have capable of dealing with Elite content despite her decidedly off-meta build.

I genuinely wish I could give this ship a hug. She really is a dream come true for me.

Out-of-order snippets across some odd 200+ page fanfiction documents that I’ll probably never finish but, I have fun with these guys so I fleshed out some outlines to share so they don’t rot forever. It’s more human-centric hence my reluctance to share it and because I see everything as a work in progress.

Semi-Synopsis

Nearly twenty years after the bombing of Gunnison, Colorado by “terrorists” the lives of those affected have not yet returned to normal. Andreanna, a child, becomes caught up in the rumors and her mother’s claims in investigating the town. After a series of murders (abductions), Andreanna ventures in seeking answers hoping to uncover the truth losing herself in the process.

Abducted by her captor, Te' Luar-ke, An'dre slowly adjusts to life on the ship though he struggles to adapt. Shu’Hult’ah, an elder entrusts a former student, Negari, with her care after she is horrifically branded by Te’Luar-ke. Shu’Hult’ah hopes to inspire the failed arbitrator, Negari, to return to the path if nothing else a life of hunting versus letting himself waste away. The two struggle to connect at first and it isn't till after a series of drastic actions that he does become a mentor to her. Her aspirations of wanting more set Negari back on his path though the realization of her fate causes significant strain.

 With the realization that she can never return home, and of her intended sacrifice, Andreanna turns to callous acceptance and hate. She and Ake despise each other and openly wish for one another's death. Upon Shu’Hult’ah's untimely passing, she settles into a darkened path with whatever chance of reconciliation destroyed when Ake is sent to Earth to kill her sister for her work among the Borgia Enterprises.

Knowing she is slated for being hived to serve as a host for the serpents, xenomorphs, she chooses to remain behind and give herself a chance. Much to what everyone covets, what she produces remembers.

Ake Among The Froge

Sparks danced across Te’Luar’ke’s vision as visions of grandeur filled his mind. The metal bent beneath his force as it was reformed and pinned into place.

Crafting one’s armor was one of the finalities of becoming blooded, something more than he was.  A step on the path to writing his misgivings and being more than the asegian he was often presumed as. It was often uncomfortable among the forge, the heat blinding one’s vision however, he found it invigorating despite the discomfort offered by the forging mask.  

Using the tongs he removed the piece from the rounded swage setting it aside to cool. He’d affix it to the right shoulder later, different metals had different cooling times and if forced it could shatter upon impact. He stepped back till his tendrils brushed the back of the platform and he hopped up settling down to enjoy his early meal, prying the mask off and setting it on his side.

He watched the flames affixed as they fluctuated in heat, senses dulled to the world as the colors shifted from one into the other amid the steady purring of the vessel's engines. The ship was a vessel though among the forge he was home.

A sharp thwack of a blunted spear against the floor startled him and he dropped to the platform below grabbing a hammer before whirling around. Squinting as he tried to make the figure out.

“Shu’hult’ah,” he retorted drawing a breath in and over his tongue.

“It is not wise to hunt alone,” his mentor rattled crouching down offering him another mask.

He set the hammer down slowly, before hesitantly accepting it. “I’ve been working on my armor before class begins. I want to be ready for my chiva.”

“You have prepared yourself plenty physically,” the striped hunter drawled as he sat down, “Are you prepared mentally?”

“Yes.”

 Shu’hult’ah frowned, mandibles drawing in and tusks rubbing against each other in unease. “Thi’chakya owes me a favor.”

“He owes many,” Te’Luar’ke spoke, “He is a fool when gambling, he owes me a lesson.”

His nrak’ytara chuckled. “He will be traveling to N’-ithya shortly to secure hosts for the chiva.”

Te’Luar’ke's eyes widened and he leaned forward. Your role among the ship would be that of an asegian, ensuring the hosts remain unconscious, that the vessel is not compromised not one that is kv’varsei."

His grandfather grabbed the rounded flat dish and fished through the meal picking at the fruit. A quick frown flashed across the teen’s face as a handful vanished, before he steeled himself, “Am I qualified?” 

Shu’hult’ah closed his eyes, a sign of trust, “S’ei”.

And then things go increasingly wrong.

Spones - 001

when I started shipping it if I did: this is a great question that I wish I remembered! I first started watching tos as a little kid with my mom, and I always loved the spones dynamic, but I don't think I shipped them back then. And then I was kinda moderately interested in trek for close to 15 years and then one day I woke up and my brain was like "what if you wrote this spones fic" and the next thing I knew they'd completely taken over my life LMAO. So I guess they kinda snuck up on me 🤣

my thoughts: my thoughts???? I've probably written over 100k words of my thoughts about spones LMAO. Their dynamic is endlessly interesting though, by far the most compelling part of tos imo. The way they care about each other but also stretch each other's thinking and spur each other on scientifically is the BEST. Their playful banter is so fun, the emotions they get across from just their expressions GOD. I could watch them forever.

What makes me happy about them: I love the way they playfully tease one another, like spock being amused by mccoy spluttering his way through a conversation and mccoy being amused when spock's trying to show off and fails, I LOVE seeing that.

What makes me sad about them: since this is shippy, the fact that they'd deny they like each other for like 20+ years because they can't communicate meaningfully for shit LOL

things done in fanfic that annoys me: if bones is insecure about everything because of kirk I want to throw my phone out the window it makes me so mad ugh. Obviously people can write whatever they want but it frustrates me that it's so prevalent in spones fics, please tag spirk if you wanna write spirk 😭

things I look for in fanfic: I'm not super picky! I love fake dating, accidental bonding, accidental baby acquisition, banter as a tag LOL, lots of other stuff. Also makes me happy when people write tos and I can read about bones' pretty blue eyes :3 but other than a few nope tropes for me I'll read just about anything!

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: hmmm this is an interesting question since they live in my head constantly lol. I guess for Spock I usually headcanon him as aroace when I'm not shipping him, but if I had to put him with someone, maybe scotty? or like a platonic relationship with uhura would be really nice. For McCoy, Kirk 😄

My happily ever after for them: they serve on the enterprise together as captain and chief medical officer and then move to Vulcan, where Spock becomes a diplomat and mccoy becomes a pediatrician/researcher at the VSA. They live in the desert near the mountains with their giant sehlat cub and they grow old together and nothing bad ever happens 😊

who is the big spoon/little spoon: I think I usually picture them as either one on their back and the other with their head on their arm/shoulder lol. If they did spoon tho, I like to think mccoy would be the big spoon because spock likes to be enclosed :3

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: bantering or discovering a new species together

una would rather set expectations high, insist that they be met. set the bar low, and few will ever exceed it. and she will have more conversations like these upon her plate, more conflicts to resolve. ❛ spock does not have to like you, lieutenant. but he does have to be civil and to be honest, as do you. ❜ una hesitates before continuing, loath to make the suggestion that lingers in her mind. ❛ if you think my presence would help smooth the conversation, that is an option. ❜

Slowly, Sam says, "I... would agree. Almost."

Sam presses his lips together thoughtfully. He wants to make sense here. He wants to make sure she gets what's going on, and doesn't come away thinking anything bad about either of them. Even though maybe that is keeping the status quo.

"I don't know how to talk to him. Even on my best behavior, I bother him." He smiles apologetically. "I pretend not to notice it, but that doesn't seem to help much. I don't expect him to be warm and fuzzy; I've dealt with Vulcans before. And it's not just Vulcans. Some people just don't..." Deep breath, then he leans forward a little. "You know how to talk to him. Do you think there's a way I could do it that wouldn't involve a transporter accident flipping my personality 180 degrees?"

This is gonna be long :D I'm gonna have to use read more

when I started shipping it if I did: so when the lockdown in 2020 started, I had nothing to do and just watched stuff. I have this favourite dubber and I was looking at the list of stuff he dubbed, and saw Star Trek AOS on that list. This guy is the voice of 2000s Alan Rickman, Tom Hanks, Tony Stark, he also apparently dubbed Garak in that one Star Trek series, and so seeing the reboot films on the list and his name next to McCoy, I was like, gotta check how he sounds. The fact that Kirk was also dubbed by a guy I generally like was a plus. (funnily enough Captain America/Iron Man and Kirk/McCoy are dubbed by the same guys here, which is funny to me). So I checked youtube and the scene I saw was the scene in Beyond where Kirk and McCoy are alone and are having a drink. And that scene did something to my brain, and I was like this is the dynamic I want, I wanna read fics, so before that I had to watch the films. So I watched AOS, basically through McCoy (Kirk/McCoy) lenses and started to read fics. Three weeks later, I decided to watch TOS because a lot of the fics referenced Kirk's backstory, so I wanted to know about it. The three weeks reading fics and looking through livejournal, kind of made me think that McCoy wasn't really an important character in TOS and that AOS made up the mckirk relationship (such a lie), so when I started watching TOS, I only planned to watch episodes heavy on McCoy. Which like... were most of them at the beginning lol I kinda decided not to trust the fandom after like three episodes or something. I binged the three seasons of TOS in like three weeks. I've had a hard time seeing tos!Kirk with men for a long time (I've had a complicated "relationship" with tos!Kirk for so long), so my interest in tos!mckirk was primarily as a platonic relationship [but it was always my fave relationship, I liked it even more than spones, actually] (but romantic in aos), but I started to insert Kirk into my spones fics, wrote a part from his POV, and then one day I just woke up and decided to write a tos!mckirk fic (it was actually because I started to read aos fics again, getting back into aos!mckirk, but... the tos version has been calling me) and just embraced the romantic (and sexual lol) aspect of their relationship.

my thoughts: I love their friendship so much. It's very important to me. I like that McCoy knows what to say to pull Kirk back on the right path, I like that Kirk can be vulnerable around McCoy. In AOS I like that McCoy is the only one Kirk shares stuff with about his mother and his insecurities (in Beyond it looked like he never even allowed the other crew to acknowledge his birthday... until McCoy finally decided to give him a party, after 5 years on the Enterprise...)

What makes me happy about them: we see both of them the most at ease around each other. They can forget who they are around each other, for a moment, at least. McCoy gives Kirk some of his most brightest smiles; McCoy can make Kirk genuinely laugh. Kirk needs him. badly.

What makes me sad about them: I eat angst for breakfast, so uhm...

things done in fanfic that annoys me: the lack of their friendship even in gen fics T_T (we all know what annoys me in aos fic, we don't need a rehash)

things I look for in fanfic: having more fics would be fun lol You know, just a genuine intimacy they show in the the show. Jim's sense of duty being the cause of angst.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:  McCoy with Spock (I do like the idea of mckirk to spones after the movie era, more or less). tos movie era Kirk? Actually, no one.

My happily ever after for them: buying a cabin in the mountains and getting two dogs (one big and one small) post TUC (then we can stop time lol or not...)

who is the big spoon/little spoon: idk haven't thought about their sleeping position. It would probably change based on what kind of story I'd wanna tell

when I started shipping it if I did: so above I said that I started to watch TOS because of mckirk, right? Mainly because of The Conscience of the King and Tarsus IV, right? Well... I finished that episode shipping spones LMAO It really was quite quick for me.

my thoughts: the most engaging dynamic in TOS imho

What makes me happy about them: The loyalty, the trust. They were in each other's lives for 100 years. 100 years. That they're more similar than different. That they actually understand each other, but would never admit it. "I don't think I could stand to lose you again." < what is that? so real to have McCoy say that

What makes me sad about them: that they would leave the other one behind and die if it meant to save Kirk (this isn't meant negatively, I'm not really explicit about it or talk about it, but my spones know that Kirk's life is a priority, sometimes even just to show that no, we're not emotionally compromised, we know what our duty is kinda way. I just think it'd be great to explore that in a fic)

things done in fanfic that annoys me: uhm (I'm speaking in general, it is just my opinion based on my taste; I believe that everyone should write what makes them happy, we can't ever please every single person) McCoy using hobgoblin, elf, jackrabbit (the last two are terms that Kirk used to make Spock angry) as a form of affection/endearment, or at all tbh. McCoy being insecure because of Kirk. (give me Spock being insecure because of McCoy-Kirk friendship) Some people feeling guilty about writing spones and therefore still making kirk-spock have the specialest bond *rolls eyes* I just don't get the need to quantify relationships, I guess. Any kind of pet names.

things I look for in fanfic: balanced relationship, mature arguments that don't rely on pettiness, trying to combine the different world views, not needing to express love in a traditional way, but a way that works for the two of them and their two differing cultures.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: McCoy with Kirk, obviously. Spock with Chapel or T'Pring (even during the movie era, yes).

My happily ever after for them: 100 years. What more do you want? LOL My personal hc is that when McCoy dies, and Spock goes to Romulus, McCoy's spirit is always there because a part of his soul stayed inside Spock's katra. So Spock is just haunted by McCoy's spirit until he dies on New Vulcan, and then they're put into the katra stone. Together forever.

Star Trek, 001 (0ct. 4, 1988) - "The Cage"

The Breakdown

In this original initially-unaired Pilot (filmed in 1964 but not released in it’s entirety until 1988), we are introduced to the crew of the Enterprise which canonically precedes Kirk’s legendary five year mission.  It’s just another day for the crew when they receive a distress signal to a planet (Talos IV) where some scientists apparently got stranded and lost decades ago.  Upon beaming down to check on everyone Captain Pike meets a cute blonde lady named Vina who lures him into a trap, or cage, if you will.

It turns out all the old scientists were just an illusion projected by some big headed aliens (aka the Talosians) with some fairly powerful telepathic abilities. They explain that they want Pike to mate with Vina (who turns out to be real) in order to supply them with a whole zoo of human slave babies. Pike is made to understand that his refusal will result in excruciating mental torture; although in fairness they explain that Pike’s stay could be tantamount to paradise if he cooperates.  Pike resists by overwhelming the Talosians with intentionally rageful thoughts (which, conveniently, is their weakness), until he can convince his captors that trapping people against their will is… wait for it… bad.  The Talosians, for their part, seem genuinely shocked at this revelation, and so they agree to let Pike go.

Oh, and it turns out Vina was severely damaged from the accident that stranded her on Talos, so she can’t come with Pike because the illusion that grants her beauty would cease if she left the planet.  Since ugly women aren’t allowed to be love interests in Starfleet, the Talosians agree to take care of her, and even provide her with a nice sexy illusion of the Captain himself, presumably so she can have a live action Pike-sex-toy to keep her company.  So I guess it’s bittersweet ending?

The Verdict

‘The Cage’ is an interesting look at what might have been. Overall I think Kirk’s Enterprise and it’s crew are more entertaining, but I wonder if I might have come to prefer the more-serious Pike over kirk’s swagger. For starters I think Jeffery Hunter is probably a better actor than Shatner at this stage in both of their careers (put the pitchforks down, you’re welcome to disagree), and I also find Pike is written a lot less sexually predatory. Don’t worry though, Pike is still plenty sexist here; apparently having women on the bridge doesn’t sit well with him, which makes me wonder if ‘Strange New Worlds’ will ever give us a flashback episode to explain this change in his attitude (since this episode is still officially canon).

Additional Observations

Pike’s doctor prescribes drinking as a form of therapy. Don Draper would approve.

I do wish Majel Roddenberry’s ‘Number one’ could have been included amongst Kirk’s crew. I always thought having Spock as both Chief Science Officer and First Officer was odd. But apparently the 60’s weren’t ready for a woman with authority.

I love the pulpy set designs. As cheap as it looks now, it has such a classic aesthetic. I dig it.

I just realized that this episode was filmed roughly as far in time from TNG’s premiere, as Enterprise’s premiere is from us now. I’m going to need a minute to let that sink in.

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 001 - The Journey Begins

So, Finally my first dive into the world of Star Trek.

Star Trek: Enterprise Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2: Broken Bow

The Episode opened with a nice bit of action, involving an Alien that I know via Cultural Osmosis is a Klingon and duo of Aliens I don't recognise at all, apparently called Sulibans. "I don't know whatever your saying" definitely sums up my position watching this.

I'm not going to recap the whole plot of the episode, you've probably seen it, but it's interesting to see that we're jumping right into establishing tensions between the Vulcan and the Human governments, and I can't wait to see how that develops over the series. Captain Archer and T'Pol seem to be a microcosm of this conflict in general, but I do hope we see more of it on a wider scale too

Considering that human characters seem to know nothing about the Klingons other than that they're a warrior race, it's nice knowing they're in the same position as I am, and that they'll be learning about them at the same pace I am.

The first of the two episodes was mostly focussed on setting the scene and getting most of the cast into place for the series, and it did an alright job of establish their various personalities and roles.

I'm particularly a fan of the Ship's Doctor Phlox, he just seems like a bright ray of happiness, and I just vibe with that.

I genuinely had know idea Vulcans were supposed to be Vegetarians, but that's a nice little piece of info to know.

The Sulibans seem to be this shadowy villain's minions, and while shady villain seemed a bit generic, I guess most villains would with exactly two scenes, so I hope more substance is added to him down the line as his plot unravels. Also, apparently he's from the future. I wasn't expecting time Travel right off the bat, but I'm down for it.

Oh, also there was a "Reverse the Polarity" in episode 2, which made my Whovian heart smile.

I probably should have a rating system while I'm doing this, but I've never really been a fan of going blahblahblah/10 or whatever stars, but I'll figure something out over the coming days. Probably. But overall, I enjoyed it.

Ellie was nervous. A familiar sensation, as synonymous with her existence as breathing. But for once the edge of the feeling was tinged with excitement. A tight hold maintained on the straps of her duffel bag in one hand and her padd in the other. There was definitely space for it amongst her clothes and personal items, but she couldn't put it down, lest she give in to the desire to bite her thumbnails. So she stood there waiting, wishing for something to do with her hands, as the transporter tech muttered away from behind the console.

Mercifully, it wasn't much longer before the room dissolved before her eyes and the Enterprise appeared.

She gazed around the room with a grin. It wasn't her first ship, but it was the largest and like everyone at the Academy she had heard the tales of it's crew, the things they saw. The type of research she would be able to conduct over the next years would be fascinating and she couldn't wait to get started.

Lost in thought, she doesn't realise there's a welcome committee waiting for her until they've locked eyes, "Commander Evers. Sir," extending a hand, the one still holding her padd, "I'm sorry," quickly passing it to the other before offering her hand again, "It's a pleasure."
