DBDA characters + formal desi attire: Charles and Edwin (Pt. 1)
This is not fanart, because I cannot draw, but if any fanartists want to use this as inspo, go ahead. And, before we begin, my fashion sense is not the best, so if any fellow desi people see this and have anything to add, go ahead. These aren't very detailed either tbh, because I am much more well versed in women's desi fashion than men's. Ok, now, let's go.
Charles Rowland
You know I had to start with my favourite desi boy of all time. I'm putting my man in a sherwani because he deserves it. Red's his colour, and it's also the colour associated with weddings in south asian culture, so yes, these pictures are technically bridegroom inspo.
So, I absolutely adore embroidered sherwanis, and I do think Charles would slay one of these beyond imagination. For full outfit references, see below.
Golden and red go together amazingly in desi wear, although they do usually denote wedding wear. But sherwanis fit so wonderfully on the shoulders + Charles' dangly gold earring would go so so well with the outfit !!
Edwin Payne
Yes, I'm imagining the British Raj era white boy in desi attire. Sue me. We all know blue's his colour, so of course I went for the blue sherwanis.
Now, blue and golden are an amazing colour combination and my original choice, because I wanted there to be a common colour between Charles and Edwin, but blue and silver/white was easier to find on Pinterest. You can see golden highlights on a few of these, though, and this next one.
This one is a bit plain but to be quite honest, it has a simple elegance to it that reminded me of Edwin. Its golden highlights mean that it would work best with golden trousers, like Charles' outfits up top.
BUT I also saw this amazing formal shalwar kameez in blue that I do think Edwin would look so so good in, so I have to add it here as a bonus idea.
+ Bonus Payneland
So, desi men's attire also has this thing where the sherwani itself is a muted colour and the man wears a cloth draped around himself in the highlighted colour (IDK what the cloth is called 😭). But I found these similar ones in blue/white and red/golden combo, and yes, it reminded me of Payneland.
LIKE. You can't tell me they wouldn't absolutely slay it. Like these are their wedding outfits to me, like for when they get married to each other.
Anyway, that's the limit for the pictures I can put on this post. Next one up is Crystal and Niko! I am so excited for Niko.
taglist because people seemed to want this and i don't want anyone to miss it. just say the word and i'll tag you for the next part: @queen-of-hobgobblers @mirabel-on-a-bicycle @shipspainfulships @read-write-thrive @justalunaticfangirl @guardianspirits13

“They torture me, but still they fear me. Do you fear me?“
He was a fascinating construct. He seemed to be something akin to herself - a sentient ... mechanoid, or perhaps a form of adaptation, a melding of bionic and mechanical forms. A blending of species, but yet like nothing that she had ever seen before, and something that she could not readily analyze or identify. And that made him ... fascinating to her. She had no way of knowing what he could ascertain of her own making, what abilities and systems of analyses that he had access to and that made him ... potentially dangerous. But she had long since learned that her curiosity would outweigh a chance of harm in nearly all scenarios.
"Fear?" An easy smile graces the edges of her lips as she watches him, hands clasped loosely together at the small of her back, a light bounce of weight from heel, to toe, and back again as she settled. "No. I am not one that is given easily to fear, or hatred, or the violence that seems to go hand in hand." That brings a slight furrow of her brow, a pensive crease. "I do not desire to see you hurt, or constrained. I am sorry that they have resorted to such tactics. Is there anything that I can offer? Do you require food, or water, or nourishment of some kind?" She did not have the authority to free him, not in the innocuous position that she had obtained with those that currently held him, but she could try and make his time here more comfortable.

asuka, if only by virtue of harpy hunters in modern verse and militant monster hunters in sunjatta, will lose their right eye and have a number of scarred bald spots where feathers should be all throughout their body. how this will effect them remains to be seen, but it's likely they will bury how they feel with prejudice. to the point they'll seem entirely uneffected by it, like they were never hurt in the first place. the truth is, however, the effects would be best observed in the slow darkening of their artwork and the marked infrequency of it, as well as some subtle changes in behavior. they're already overbearing in their own right, but they would become more so, more anxious, silencing themself while at the same time needing more. nightmares will also become very common for them and they will lose - along with their eye and feathers - an aspect of their sense of being, which will further muddy their perception of themself.
this will feed heavily into the chaos of their character. it's already their belief that they'll never be as beautiful as either of their parents, or as an addition to the harpy community as a whole - having permanent and very visible scars in this capacity will only prove this belief to be true, to them, no matter how strong and resilient others find them to be after surviving such an ordeal as kidnapping and organ theft. they will never have magic. they will never be self-reliant like everyone they know and love. they will never be beautiful either. and it fuels their quiet self-loathing, their confusion about themself, worsens their need to be accepted and loved. in a way, i think it will also carve out a certain path asuka will choose to take, which may not be full of magic but will allow them to protect themself. they'll mature in some ways, too, and become a different kind of self-reliant, useful even. this experience will ultimately harden them.

@nightmaer said: ❛ you have a talent for causing things pain . ❜ from katherine!
TRY AS HE MIGHT TO DENY SUCH A REALITY, he could not. For centuries his family reminded him of his own malice. He was plagued with memories of tortured lovers, scorned friends, torched villages -- families left broken, humans turned vampires. All in the name of Niklaus's self-preservation, as he ran from his father and did what he had to do in order to survive. And yet, in spite of his family's sheepish cries, they stuck beside him. Perhaps that made them more pathetic than Klaus could ever be. "You hate me, Katerina. But you and I - we are not so different."
He inched closer to her. The space between them was little, a reflection of something deeper than physical distance. "And yet all the pain and misery you've inflicted has little to do with me. Bridges you've burnt - family lost, lovers left in shame at the thought of you. That was all you, love. I've given you your freedom. But without me to run from, what purpose does your feeble existence have?"

ok but just to sorta elaborate on the lil tidbit i mentioned about '07 SF being quiet during a lot of the TMNT '07 plot because of the monsters: i know that the turtles were actually There when the first monster was captured, but food for thought — imagine if ( for the sake of this verse ) SF's sudden drop of activity was sort of the precursor to what was about to come. like here he is, super active, there's these hijackings all the time, then suddenly....crickets. because at that point even if winters hadn't sent the foot clan after the monsters yet, SF still knows about em in some capacity. like idk i think in-universe it'd make for a neat sort of forewarning that something wasn't right
