It wasn’t common for those around him to see through the mask .. the mask he deliberately wore to protect himself. Nor did he often attempt to look at those around him in the eyes either, there was a creeping fear somewhere in his brain that if he did they would ask too many questions. Think he needs fixing or something like that.

He was speaking about something, rambling about the history of the particular alcohol they had ordered alongside their meal. He was struggling with the chop sticks all over again, fumbling wasn’t something he enjoyed especially in front the people he deemed close. It was stupid, why couldn’t he pick up the-

Eyes connected, Childe sucking in a breath, heart beat racing as it felt like all his senses narrowed in on the other sitting there looking at him strangely. He didn’t like it, it felt strange a weird sensation of too close yet completely out of reach.

The silence between them was unusual yet Childe sat there barely taking a breath as they looked— no stared at each other.

It’s as if Zhongli could see through everything, like he had that fated day. Why’d it hurt so much, why was his heart racing so fast? There was concern or something in the others eyes making him dizzy. Childe felt his chest tightened when he finally broke the eye contact, moving up and away from the table muttering under his breath how he was 'needed' soon and would catch up again later.
