The Creative Assembly assembles a machine for living
Tumblr media
The primordial harshness of space is on horrifying display in the 1979 film Alien. The crew of the spaceship Nostromo - featuring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley - was stalked by the xenomorph, a fearsome lifeform conceived by Swiss designer and architecture graduate H.R. Giger.
The utilitarian human architecture, gestated by concept artist Ron Cobb and realized by production designer Michael Seymour's art department, is equally memorable, with corridors that have proven especially influential. Director Ridley Scott sought a tangible reality that captured 'the beauty of something absolutely about function'.
In Alien: Isolation, British developer The Creative Assembly lets us inhabit this world, caught in a deadly game of hide and seek. Following the discovery of Nostromo's recorder, the player takes on the role of Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda and arrives at Sevastopol: a space station undergoing decommission on the outer rim, in the orbit of a gas giant.
Tumblr media
Lead artist Jude Bond and concept artist Bradley Wright based Sevastopol's design on the ore refinery towed by the Nostromo in the film; its cathedral-like spires were initially conceived in an illustration by Ridley Scott. Sevastopol features three, not four towers, and extends the decks below the platform that serves as an artificial ground. Massive thrusters - 'gravity anchors' - are retrofitted to domes underneath. In The Art of Alien: Isolation (2014), Wright notes: 'I [initially] explored ideas of this large machine structure that formed the center of each tower's hub - a mini-brain of sorts.' Each tower serves an 'archetypal function - habitation, technical and science' with 'engineering on the lower decks', somewhat reminiscent of Paolo Soleri's arcology, Novanoah I.
For the internal spaces, Wright 'took cues from Cobb's simplified utilitarian color choices to make a clean and readable design'. The spaces emulate the film sets with exacting verisimilitude - from the distinctive padded corridors to the turret rail-mounted chairs - but also sees them evolve into a cohesively complete and functional environment that considers circulation, light, even introductory impact and interior to exterior sight lines. The film's art director Roger Christian clad the sets in old aircraft parts and bond adds: 'We've limited ourselves to things which could have been or were available in 1979.'
The architecture is treated as a machine, with its utilitarian aspects and exoskeleton exposed, like the xenomorph itself. One of the early Nostromo designs by concept artist Chris Foss suggested a 'Mississippi river boat' or steamship - which coincidentally also served as inspiration in Le Corbousier's machine for living, the Villa Savoye.
Alien: Isolation exemplifies architecture in the context of a machine and finds aesthetic beauty in its lo-fi functionalism.

Hello, DinCobb Nation!
Today's the first official day of the DinCobb Fall Fest Mini Big Bang! This event will feature a more theme oriented big bang as we enter the fall season. This includes but is not limited to:
Halloween - Costumes, trick o' treating, scary movies
Fall Aesthetic - Pumpkins, apples, colder weather
Spooky - Ghosts, monsters, hauntings
Other Fall Holidays: Rosh Hashanah, Día de Muertos, Diwali
Sign Ups Open
What is a mini big bang?
Well, it's like a big bang but smaller. The goal of this event is to have authors produce a fic that's between 2 and 5 thousand words. During one of the check-ins, authors submit fic drafts/summaries and artists will create something to go with the fic they were paired with.
Can I sign up as both an artist and an author?
Yes! There is the option to do both in this event.
What if I have other questions?
Feel free to ask a mod (either @cryptids-and-starlight or myself) OR check out additional details under the read more.
What's the event schedule?
The entire event will run from August 13 to November 17. For a larger break down, check the post out here.
Additional Event Information
Here are details for what will be expected of authors and artists in terms of contributions. This event is meant to be fun and low stakes for those who participate. If the information below does not answer any of your questions, please reach out to a mod and we can answer your question!
For Writers:
The fic must be about Din and Cobb, but authors are free to explore what that relationship looks like to them whether they're depicted as best friends, brothers in arms, lovers, queer platonic partners, and more.
2-5k word count. Although it is not limited to 5k.
A beta reader is highly recommended, though not a requirement. If you need help finding a beta reader, please reach out and we will do our best to connect you with one.
Workshopping will be allowed and encouraged in public discord servers and elsewhere, just refrain from sharing the whole fic with anyone but your beta reader(s) and artist.
All fics must be thoroughly and properly tagged and rated. This is the one hard rule that will be enforced, as it is something that protects both artists and readers
All fics must be posted to AO3 and included in the event collection (DinCobb Fall Fest Mini Big Bang). You may cross post to tumblr if you would like to, too! More info about posting requirements to come at a later date.
For Artists:
One art piece is required for each fic. But you are encouraged to do more if you would like.
Art can be anything as long as the artist and author agree to the medium of choice which can include any of the following: gif sets, music vids, playlists, podfic, moodboards, artwork, etc.
Art should be kept between artist and author (unless you need advice on anatomy or help with audio edits or something, in which case please keep it between the artist and whoever is helping out)
Other Topics:
Dropping will not incur a formal penalty. It is heavily encouraged you reach out to the appropriate people (ie. a mod) ASAP so a pitch hitter can be found in a timely manner.
The last drop out day with no questions asked is September 30. If you need to drop out past this day, inform a mod immediately. Keep in mind that extensions can also be made if it is needed.
Things that may get you removed from the event include: not including proper tags/ratings, not responding in a timely manner during check-ins or if a mod reaches out to you, harassing other participants in any way whatsoever

Inception
Wait, this is just Ocean’s Eleven but backwards!
Tumblr media
I feel like I hadn’t really seen any heist movies when I first saw Inception, but I appreciate now that it’s just a reverse heist movie. Seriously, we got the vignettes where we assemble the crew, we got the whiteboard scenes, the big setpieces (with just a touch more creativity than usual, owing to the dream setting)… it’s all here. Hey, if it works, it works, and they use the space well – it’s tight and well-edited, and the dream within a dream framing device is incredibly clean. The back half of this movie could easily have been messy and confusing with the time dilation, but never is due to the clear visual shorthand for each layer.
Tumblr media
My favorite bit is probably the Mr. Charles gambit. The sheer balls to let the target in on the truth that they’re in a dream, while still pulling the wool over their eyes by making them think another layer of the dream is real life is just so slick. And just when the mark’s bullshit meter starts to go off, the bar they’re in starts to shake and tilt due to the car chase going on a layer up affecting the dream? perfect.
I think the hallway fight is the one everyone remembers – with good reason – but outside of that, most of the action consists of incredibly boring action movie shootouts. Guys driving cars and shooting guns, guys running around a hotel and shooting guns, guys on skis shooting guns*... it gets old, especially given that they had such creative freedom from the premise. That being said, the hallway fight is sick as shit and Arthur is the baddest motherfucker in this movie. Who is he, Orbital Spider-Man? Where did he train to do zero-g chokeholds??
Tumblr media
*Okay, the ski stuff is goofy as hell by the way. 6 full-suited military goons skitching on the back of a snow-equipped hummer is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. Someone on the writing team had to have been pitching that in different projects for years and finally got their wish, like the Tears of the Kingdom dev who finally got to make Ganon hot. I’m happy for you, guns and skis guy!
Again, for the fact that it’s set in a dream and things could get as surreal as possible, it’s a bummer how monochrome and sensible everything is. There’s a little bit of dream weirdness – entire crowds simultaneously staring at the camera is incredibly unnerving – but by and large Inception feels content to tie any odd happenings to what’s going on around the dreamer in the real world, like the car whipping around or a splash of water, which feels uninspired and a bit too logical. Limbo is about as weird as things get, and that’s, well, not that weird.
Tumblr media
I also kind of wish it went a bit more into the societal changes and effects brought about by, y’know, people being able to walk straight into other people’s dreams. I get why they didn’t; it’s a pretty tightly paced action movie, especially in the back half, and any extra time is spent on emotional beats to flesh out Cobb’s arc. And sure, it definitely gives us some incidental worldbuilding: we hear about the technology’s origins (military R&D, of course), and we see a den of dream addicts in Mumbasa. Still, it’s just wild to me that there’s a whole fuckin’ cottage industry of dream thieves – I want to know more!
Anyway, I liked it. Despite feeling a little tame aesthetically, the concept is cool and used pretty well, and Cobb’s emotional story lands; the titular inception being the key to his dark edgy backstory is as satisfying as it is inevitable.

Main inspirations for Beware The Bat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is set in the same universe as Man of tomorrow, but while man of tomorrow takes place in a stylized 1960s style Sci fi metropolis
Beware the bat is similar to the animated series where it's stuck in the aesthetics of Gothic 1940s while it has modern tech, but it also has elements from the 80s.
The criminal underworld is a massive focus, and everyone is tied to the main big bad in some way or another
Clancy Brown as Sal Maroni isn't the only thing I'm bringing over for this concept. Oswald Cobb being voiceclaimed by Collin Farrel Is also being brought over.
I love the interpretation of Oswald from the Reevesverse.
Tumblr media
The criminal underworld of Gotham has always been my favorite part of the Batman Mythos, and I love that we are getting an entire show about it.
Hell, the name for the au of "Beware The Bat" stemmed from a "slogan" where the Batman was thought of as a demon so people would say "beware the bat"
I'm honestly considering changing the voice of Bruce to be battinson voice so that the au is a "if I were to have the reigns of the batman universe" au
That would mean
Dano is Riddler
Jeffery Wright is Gordon
Zoe Kravitz is catwoman
Farrel is penguin
Pattinson is batman you get the point
BTB is to the batman what man of tomorrow is to My adventures with superman
I'm excited to start working...
