Random Engage Headcanon

Everyone in the game calls them the Corrupted, but that's because they can talk to people who were there a thousand years ago who either coined the term themselves or regularly spoke with people who did. But most people are not royalty, attached to royalty, or in any way adjacent to an Emblem ring. So what does the citzenry of each country call the Corrupted?

The Firenese call them the Famine That Walks. Considered a curse laid on them by an outside enemy, the Famine That Walks destroys everything in its path, leaving only destruction and barren land in its wake. Crops burned, animals slain and torn to useless shreds, flowers trampled upon, herbs dug up and destroyed by creatures who seem to move as one in the service of pointless destruction. No matter how abundant your kingdom is, the Famine That Walks is always able to match or surpass that abundance, and tear it away.

Brodian civilians call them the Unearthed. The prevailing theory is that someone, somewhere, dug too deep; that these creatures were imprisoned somewhere deep beneath the earth, until some hapless miner happened to unearth them, unleashing this curse on their lands. Some, in fact, see them as a cleansing purge to get rid of all the weak and leave only the strong that can survive them. A harbinger, an enemy greater than even the hated Elusians. To these people, the Unearthed are also known simply as the Crucible.

Elusian nobility probably knows to call them the Corrupted, but the civilians? The civilians call them the Mysteries. The Kingdom of Knowledge has never been one to admit defeat in understanding anything, but these creatures actively defy learning about them, behaving in Elusia's favor one moment and then turning on them in the next. What can you do, except call them the things which cannot be known, or predicted, only fought? What can you do, except admit that you will never understand what took your neighbors in the night?

Solm's civilians call them the Entrapped. Souls of the damned, trapped and forced to fight and destroy without purpose. Free only of the best things in life, forced to experience every unpleasant thing such as trudging through deep sand and the heat of an uncaring bright sun. Forced, in fact, to seek out such sensations, especially the sensation of being killed for a second time. And yet... the Solmese reason, free or dead. They will free them from the curse, even if it means subjecting them to a second death. Hopefully this one will be more final.

So I had a hysterectomy today (hooray!) and I brought along my stuffed orca, Shamu, as a comfort object. And everyone i interacted with during my pre-op was like "Oh! Who's this?" so I was telling them all about him, how he's been with me since I was 9 and gone on every single vacation and road trip, and they were telling me about their own stuffed buddies (one lady said she still has hers after 40 years!) and all of this while I was signing consent forms and providing a list of the things I'd brought with me, you know, small talk.

So then a nurse comes over and goes "Okay, I've got some stickers I'll put on your things so we know they're yours" and I'm like "OK cool" so she puts a sticker on my coat and stickers on my bags of clothes and then she turns to Shamu and I'm like "oh I guess he gets a sticker too"

But no. She pulls out a hospital bracelet that's an exact copy of mine and slaps it on his tail, like so:

Anyway, they take me back and put me under, and when I awake groggily a few hours later it takes me a minute to get my bearings, so I don't notice Shamu at first. But then I realize he's tucked up next to me in the gurney, so I grab him, and my hand touches gauze.

And I'm like "huh?" so I look at him and I realize
