“Don’t Notice, Here’s Dango”
<33 . In which Suna slips at practice after facing an accidental injury
Cw/Tw :: Hand injury. Minor swearing. (Someone swears like once?)
It had been a rough day, that was more than an understatement but currently Suna’s brain was absolutely spinning in fog and fatigue so he did not care how vague he was being. Who could expect a poor 2 year old to be detailed!! No, no he was not 2, he could not be young right now.
In a silent protest Suna curled himself up in his chair - Algebra can wait right now he had to age up before the bell struck and sent him to practice. Even if Suna did miss something important he could always steal notes from one of the Miya’s notebooks at lunch tomorrow.
He typically stole notes from the both of them anyways, the teacher had begun to get used to him falling asleep and allowed it once she figured out how it was his medication causing him extreme fatigue later in the day. He got good grades so why did she need to bother with keeping him awake?
The twins never cared when Suna sat next to one of them and grabbed their math notebook and took down notes while sipping or whatever boxed drink he bought from the vending machines that day and chewed on an apple - both safe choices to not mess up his nor their notebook. It was their little lunch tradition in a way.
Class passed in a blur and soon enough Suna was sitting on the court stretching and trying to keep himself above the cotton-like pull that wanted to overtake him. While Suna spent the entire period trying to age himself up he was unsuccessful in his attempts and now was left teetering between spaces.
“Sunarin!” Osamu plopped himself down next to Suna and began to stretch, “so are you alright? I saw you with your head down in math but it didn’t seem like your normal tiredness?”
With a small hum, Suna finished his stretches and looked over at Osamu. The same Osamu who’s stuck by him through thick and thin, kept him sane when he broke down, kept him safe when he felt tiny. “Just feel fuzzy in the head.” The one who helped him code word his regression.
They both sat on the floor now, Osamu continuing to stretch while Suna leaned against the wall, fixing his mind of random movements. “Well, you know no one on the team minds if you slip. Kita adores you to pieces and Akagi always keeps a stuffed animal or two in his duffel for safety precautions.”
Suna huffed out a small laugh, “you know how I don’t want to burden anyone.” Osamu flicked the ravens knee as he went down to finish off his calf stretches.
Mid practice, it always happened in the midst of something. Suna had leapt up to block the ball from Atsumu who was on the opposite team. The ball was whizzing towards him, going far faster than normal - Atsumu forgot to hold back his strength a little like he always did in practice games.
The ball collided quickly with Sunas hand, pulling back his fingers and bending them too far for how the bone should be. Pain fills his nervous system causing Suna to crumble on the ground in choked back tears; his mind sinking and filling with cotton.
“Shit, Suna darling look up at me please.” Osamu is crouched in front of Suna, lightly tugging the boy onto his lap and whispering small comforts. “Suna love I can’t help if you don’t show me what’s happening.”
Footsteps are heard as Kita rounds behind Osamu and kneels down, “Hey Rin-Rin baby, why don’t I look at your hand while ‘Samu plays with you? Doesn’t that sound fun!” Suna slowly looks up and nods, his un-injured hand pushed up to his mouth with a few fingers in-between his teeth.
In a swift movement of practiced precision Osamu lifts up Suna and slowly carries him to the bench. “Rin look at this! Akagi brought Dango!” At the mention of the beloved dragon plush Suna looked up and searched for the aforementioned item. “He’s above you sweetheart.”
Suna glanced up, unbeknownst that while Osamu was holding the plush above his head this was also a move to get him distracted enough that he didn’t notice Kita softly taking his hand and turning it to examine what had happened.
The rest of the team practiced quietly off the side, occasionally glancing over. Although Suna had only regressed at practice a couple times it had been enough to learn he only appreciated 3 people around him max when small.
“Sugar, did you know thatt-” Osamu tilted his tone up playfully at the end of his phrase before pausing slightly to gain Sunas interest, “Dango is a tickle dragon!” In a swift movement Osamu brought Dango the dragon down and had the muzzle pepper ticklish kisses across Suna’s face.
With Dango so close to Suna's face he reached out and quickly latched onto the plush, "Da'ngo!" A grin was plastered across his face at the soft feeling in his palms, "Aka, thanks you!" The 's' in thanks was drawn out as Suna spoke making it clear how small the boy was slipping.
Akagi muffled a laugh behind a cough and ruffled Suna's hair, "of course lovebug! I know how much you adore Dango." As Suna's attention drifted back to the dragon Akagi tore his focus over to Kita who was beginning to finish up by bandaging Suna's finger after make-shifting a splint with what they had.
Luckily for the three Suna had not paid much-if any- mind to Kita working on his hand; none of them were quiet sure what they would of done if the boy had broken down in tears whilst Kita worked. "Done?" Suna glanced over at Kita as he felt the elder move his hand back on to his lap, at the question Kita gave a nod and poked Suna's nose quietly mumbling out a 'boop' as Suna scrunched his face up. "Can we p'ay now?"
Kita hummed and faked pondering the question before smiling down at Suna. "Sure I don't see why we can't, what do you wanna play sugar?"

Bungou Stray Dogs Otoge
So I saw an earlier post about what BSD characters being the love interests in Diabolik Lovers, so why not make an otoge/otome game for them?
Dazai Yohane proudly presents you... Bungou Stray Dogs Otoge!
Warning: Crack, some angst in the bad endings, OOC even maybe. Random thoughts in a mental breakdown. Spoilers for Storm Bringer. Character deaths mentions.
Notes: None. I just want to distract myself.
Love interests:
Dazai Osamu - 1 True Ending, 1 Good Ending and 2 Bad Endings
The mystery type
"Posterboi", yes, he's on the poster for the common version of the game, the limited version ft all 5 love interests (except for Fyodor because he's in the secret route)
Ranked #2 in the popularity poll
Is loved by all the fangirls
Likes to fool around with MC
All of that disappear when you got out of the common route and head for his route
FUCK PLEASE GO BACK
Shout out to Dazai slowly opening up gotta be my favourite genre
Will have a CG where he takes you to Lupin and slowly opens up to you about his past
Best bed scene in the whole game
One of the bad endings is where you two committed a lover's suicide together and succeeded.
Nakahara Chuuya - 1 True Ending, 2 Good Ending and 3 Bad Endings
The rich guy who'd buy you everything as a gift, jewelries, fancy clothes, a store, a building even?!
Candidate for the next mob boss
5/5 (actually 4.5) on these criterias:
The (soon to be) mob boss
Cruel, cold to almost everyone else except for his 'family' aka the mafia
Is actually a nice person
Will treats you gently, like a princess when he's head over heels for you
Gap moe (he likes dogs)
So inevitably, he ranked #1 in the popularity poll
Is almost everything the Italians hates about 'romanticizing the mafiosos'
His route is basically a whole "FUCK GO BACK" like Dazai, since we'll focus on his traumas and his past more.
He will opens up about his fear of not being a human, about the calamity that lives inside him
Has a CG where he takes you to visit Rimbaud's and The Flags' graves.
That one route would make the players put the Switch/PS Vita down and ask themselves why are they here, just to suffer.
Best kiss sounds in the whole fucking game I say. His bed scene makes you went from angsty mood to instant horny.
One of his bad ending is about how Chuuya lost control of the calamity inside him - Arahabaki when he saw you, killed before his eyes by the enemy, and with Dazai out of the picture, there isn't anyone there to stop him anymore.
Nakajima Atsushi - 1 True Ending, 1 Good Ending and 1 Bad Ending
That one character make everyone goes 'hell I could adopt him even not flirt with him.'
Cute, shy boy
Is cute when needed and sexy when wanted
Makes you wonder how can an angel like this even exists
Has good kissing sounds *if you know what I mean*
Drifting off the common route we dig deeper into his past, about the beast inside him, about the orphanage and the headmaster
A CG where he'll cry in your arms and you soothing him, reassure the boy that it's all in the past and he isn't alone now
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke - 1 True Ending, 2 Good Ending and 2 Bad Ending
Tsundere type
Foul-mouthed
Eventually will slowly opens up to MC
God he's so cute and precious
Needs a hug for all the traumas he's been through
His route basically focus on his past and how Dazai affected him so much
He has a CG where he sat down and talk with you about Gin and how he grows up in the slum, about why did he crave for power so bad, and why he wanted to be acknowledged by his ex-mentor.
3rd best bed scene in the game.
Kunikida Doppo - 1 True Ending, 1 Good Ending and 1 Bad Ending
Workaholic type
A man who dedicates his life to work
The handsome one with glasses
It's really fun watching him slowly falling for you, especially when he has this "58 standards for the ideal woman"
He'll slowly crosses them out just for you 💖
His route focus on the reason he dreams of an ideal world, his ideal world
Will has this 'behind the scene' flashback about The Azure King's case and Azure Apostle's case 2 years ago with the death of Rokuzou and Sasaki.
A CG where he holds you tightly in his arms and speaks with a broken voice, teary eyes about how he's so scare that his ideal might consume him one day like what happened to Azure King. He is whom chases his ideals like the moth chasing flames, but deep down under that perfectionist, workaholic mask is how he's insecure and scared that his ideals will burn him down like the flame that burn down the moth.
2nd best bed scene in the game.
His bad ending is basically when his ideals finally consume him and Kunikida became the 2nd Azure King.
Secret route: Fyodor Dostoevsky - 1 True Ending and 1 Bad Ending
After you finish everyone's route, a new, hidden route will be unlocked. And it's the Russian man, the mastermind behind everything
To be honest, this is quite of a short route. No common, just straight to his route
Also a mystery type
The smart, prodigy type
The one who has this aura goes "run for your life" or either "damn he's hot"
Expect an unhealthy relationship when you're in this route
This man will uses you like a pawn on his chessboard
Gaslighting, manipulation, abusing, you name it. Everything is in this route
What good ending? No good ending with him for you missy. Only true end or bad end.
WORST BAD ENDING IN THE WHOLE GAME. Please don't ask what it's like.
Fandisc: 2 fandisc with one being the current timeline, the other is about when Dazai is still in the mafia.
Bonus contents for 1st fandisc:
An extra route for Fukuzawa
A Bad Ending in common route ft a 3P, a Dazai x MC x Chuuya sandwich *chef's kiss*
An another Bad Ending in common route ft a 3P, an Atsushi x MC x Akutagawa sandwich
And a new Bad Ending in secret route leads you to a Dazai x MC x Fyodor sandwich
Bonus contents for 2nd fandisc:
A Mafia!Dazai route
An Odasaku route
An Ango route
A Bad Ending in common route that's extra spicy ft a 4P with the Dark Era Trio?!!! *chef's kiss*

Anime I Watched in 2021, from Worst to Best
2021 was the year I got back into anime real hard, after almost a decade of maybe checking out one show a year, if that, so below the break is a list of all 34 of the shows/movies/OVAs I watched to completion over the course of the year, roughly ranked from worst to best.
YASUKE
The actually true story of Yasuke- the slave-turned-samurai who fought for Oda Nobunaga- should lend itself so easily to adaptation that I assumed the Netflix anime was going to be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, it was very clear within the first ten seconds that this was not going to be what I wanted it to be, and if not for the fact that it was only six episodes I would’ve just dropped it completely by the end of the third.
ANGEL LINKS
This is the only thing on this entire list that I watched with complete confidence that it would be bad, and what I wound up with was the most middling anime I have ever seen. A perfect 5/10, the ultimate wash, could have been much better or much worse, I’ll be thinking about this series forever.
LITTLE NEMO: ADVENTURES IN SLUMBERLAND
Little Nemo was a production that was in development for over a decade and involved nearly every talented person in both the American and Japanese film industries in the 80’s at one point or another, resulting in a gorgeous looking film with nothing else going on. The development of the movie is genuinely more interesting and star-studded than the movie itself.
CASE CLOSED: EPISODE “ONE”
The first thirty minutes of this special are made worthless by the fact that everything that comes after is a 1:1 recreation of the first (plus like ten minutes of the second) of Case Closed/Detective Conan, so all the extra exposition that happens during that chunk just wound up getting repeated, and all of the future elements that were added in like Sherry/Ai and the other Black Organization members are ultimately just cameos. It was nice to see it in HD, and for the new dub cast to take a swing at the origin story, but that’s about it.
MICHIKO & HATCHIN
Sayo Yamamoto’s directorial debut was both disappointing and frustrating, because (spoilers for this list) the components that made The Woman Called Fujiko Mine so incredible are all present here, but not used anywhere near as well as that series. And while it may not be fair to compare her earlier original work with a later one that’s also based in an established franchise, if I hadn’t seen The Woman Called Fujiko Mine first, I honestly can’t even say if I would’ve watched all of this series.
LUPIN III: THE FIRST and LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO
Watching The First made me retroactively lower my ranking of The Castle of Cagliostro, because I ultimately realized the only reason I’d ever watch either of these again is for the animation. And make no mistake, the quality of animation in both of these films is superb, but both of these fail to deliver on what I want out of a Lupin III story in almost the exact same way.
OSAMU TEZUKA’S METROPOLIS
A movie loosely based on a manga that itself was based on a single frame of a 1921 silent movie, Metropolis spreads itself a little too thin in too many directions in terms of its plot, but I appreciate the ambition involved compared to the previous movies on this list. And, like those movies, it’s also positively gorgeous to look at: even the dated CG has a certain charm to it, considering the setting.
MEGAZONE 23 (Parts 1-3)
The series that was credited with the explosion in popularity of the OVA format in Japan, they’re a little less remarkable in the wake of all the sci-fi stories that have come after it (especially 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim), but still worth checking out. Part 2 is the best, followed by 1, which is a prerequisite for the second part anyway, and Part 3 could probably be passed since it’s ultimately just the story of the first two parts told again, but slightly worse.
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: CHAR’S COUNTERATTACK
Char’s Counterattack is a great action movie, but… man, there’s a lot to deal with in terms of what its story is and how it deals with it. It has the distinction of being the only thing on this list that I went through more than once because there was so much to mull over, especially in the greater context of Universal Century Gundam, but even so, I’m comfortable with its relatively low place on the list.
OTAKU NO VIDEO
A charming love letter and cautionary tale about, for, and by otaku, cutting between an animated and romanticized story about otaku life and live-action mockumentary segments warning of the dangers. Gainax- at least early Gainax- seems to have been the king of “listen, we love this subculture with all our hearts, but please don’t let it consume you”.
LUPIN III: GOEMON’S BLOOD SPRAY
I think one of the keys to making a good Lupin III story is to use Goemon sparingly, because he has a very specific set of functions, both practical and comedic. I appreciate the effort involved in making a movie that’s meant to be about him, but of the movies that take place in The Woman Called Fujiko Mine’s continuity, this is easily the weakest.
LUPIN III: FUJIKO’S LIE
It comes up in other Lupin III stories, but what makes Fujiko so interesting among the other members of the core cast is that she’s way more prone to doing horrible things than Lupin is. This movie trades super hard on that, where most of the movie is Fujiko doing one particularly horrible (but very mundane) thing, which is great, but it also suffers from having a particularly ridiculous antagonist.
LUPIN III: JIGEN’S GRAVESTONE
Jigen’s movie doesn’t have as much to say about Jigen as the other previously mentioned movies do about their titular characters, which is actually pretty alright since Jigen is a little more flexible than the others when it comes to how he’s presented story to story. This instead goes in hard on being a thriller first, and simply gives Jigen the spotlight for the major sequences, which gets it top spot next to it’s siblings.
LUPIN III: BYE BYE, LADY LIBERTY
This was the first Lupin III TV special, released at a time when the series had a lull in popularity. As such, it feels almost like “The Best Of Lupin III Part II”, which made it a delightful watch and my recommendation for how you should get into the franchise, if you’re so inclined.
SLAYERS: THE MOTION PICTURE / SLAYERS PERFECT
In the course of getting back into anime this year, I’ve discovered one of my favorite character archetypes is “unbelievably overpowered protagonist with one or more crippling character flaws that keep them from being boring”. Lina Inverse may be the queen of this archetype, and watching this got me very excited about eventually tackling the rest of The Slayers stuff out there.
PROMARE
The answer to the question “what if the director of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill made a movie”. A plot with some aspects that you could argue the depth of if you’re feeling frisky, in service of some really incredible action set pieces with Hiroyuki Imaishi’s distinct type of visual spectacle.
LUPIN III VS. DETECTIVE CONAN: THE MOVIE
The movie version of this crossover is pretty much what I was expecting: a fun action thriller with characters I love a lot. It’s a little more convoluted and the character moments are spread thinner than the special (spoilers for this list), but still a very fun watch.
ARIA THE ANIMATION
Never before have I encountered something with such elaborate sci-fi worldbuilding to set the stage for such a simple slice of life story. Sugary sweet feel good stories about girls being friends and working hard to achieve their goals.
MOBILE SUIT ZETA GUNDAM
I stand by the comment I made in my bigger review that Zeta Gundam feels like Mobile Suit Gundam fan fiction, going a little too heavy on the melodrama after the more grounded original. In spite of that, it’s still a great watch and has some of the best paced action scenes I’ve yet seen in a mecha anime.
YASHAHIME (Season 1)
The biggest compliment I can pay Yashahime is that a large part of the reason I started watching so much anime again is because it reminded me of how much I enjoy anime. It hits the exact same zone that Inuyasha did 20 years ago that makes me go “anime good”.
CASTLEVANIA (Seasons 1-4)
The bar for good animated adaptations of video games. Taking all the seasons together, I do think it got weaker over time, but only incrementally, and it started out with a perfect score.
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM
Genre-defining series that holds up to this day, even with its dated, budget production values. It would be higher if not for the deep pangs of “what could have been” I feel wondering what if they had gotten a full 52 episode run instead of the truncated 43.
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM ZZ
Gundam ZZ feels like the true successor to Mobile Suit Gundam, more in line with it thematically and tonally despite having much more lighthearted and much heavier moments. I would’ve honestly put this even higher if the finale had been a little more put together, but even in spite of that I’d say this is my favorite of Universal Century Gundam so far.
TOKYO GODFATHERS
A movie that would be almost sickeningly sweet if not for the willingness to poke fun at itself, both in terms of the main cast being losers and weirdos and for the increasingly unlikely situations they find themselves in. Enhanced dramatically by the stellar animation to punctuate a lot of the comedy.
ROBOT CARNIVAL
An amazing anthology loosely themed around robots whose weakest part still lands a “technically impressive”. It also hits a wide range of genres across all of its shorts, so there’s a good chance that even if you’re a tough sell, there’s at least one that will appeal to you.
MACROSS PLUS: MOVIE EDITION
With the same core creative staff that would go on to make Cowboy Bebop, including Shinichiro Watanabe, Keiko Nobumoto (rest in peace), and Yoko Kanno, it’s not a surprise this turned out so excellent. Some aspects of the story felt a little underdeveloped, but I imagine that’s a consequence of this being a compilation movie of four ~40 minute OVAs.
EXPELLED FROM PARADISE
A terrifically paced action movie that brushes up against heady philosophical concepts just enough to keep things interesting, without getting lost in the weeds. The only real strike I have against this one is the embarrassingly transparent decision to de-age the adult woman protagonist to a sixteen year old’s body for literally no reason other than audience pandering.
OUTLAW STAR
The most rock-solid action series on this list, with a clear, overarching plot strung along fun episodic stories, a fantastic cast of characters, and a setting so unique among stories set in space that I wish there was another series that would actually make use of it (I’ll be thinking about Angel Links forever). It’s a cruel cosmic joke that this series is so closely associated with Cowboy Bebop that it’s never gotten the spotlight it deserves.
PERFECT BLUE
An incredible psychological thriller that you’re probably better off going into knowing as little as possible about, considering my own experiences with expectations of its content.
CITY HUNTER
City Hunter is like a Donald P. Bellisario TV show (i.e. JAG or NCIS) in that every episode has almost the same formula, but the formula is so solid and the characters are so strong that you can just keep watching it forever. Maybe that’s not the most flattering way to describe something so high on this list, but this series and its characters very quickly entered All-Time Classic territory for me.
LUPIN III VS. DETECTIVE CONAN (The Special)
I was hoping I would enjoy this crossover, but I absolutely did not expect it to be basically perfect, in that it did everything I could have wanted to see utilizing both the Lupin III crew and the cast of Case Closed. The only flaw, in hindsight, is that it used up the crossover potential so expertly that they didn’t have much left for the sequel.
LUPIN III: THE WOMAN CALLED FUJIKO MINE
Strikes a perfect balance of being artistic without being totally up its own ass, completely willing to have fun with its characters and settings while also being much more dramatic than what I would typically expect from a Lupin III story. Without going into detailed spoilers, I also think it’s possibly the most perfect retroactive origin story for an established character ever told.
MOBILE FIGHTER G GUNDAM
In my heart of hearts, I will always love big, dumb, hot-blooded combat series more than anything else, and this is the big, dumb, hot-blooded combat series executed with perfection. Nothing speaks more about how confident it is in its own execution than ending the final battle with the literal power of love, and completely nailing it.
If you read all this: thanks for indulging me! I hope you have a safe, healthy, and happy 2022!

Premiere Impressions - Winter 2019
ZI still haven’t even finished 2018, but I knew that if I waited any longer I’d never get through any of this, so let’s dive right in!
Winter is usually a light season for me - I can’t spend all my time watching, and I’m much choosier about what I do watch than in other seasons. This is pretty much how I skipped a lot of deserving stuff last year - I was burnt out and totally skipped over Gakuen Babysitters, for example - and looking down the list...Only 29 full-length shows made their premiere this season, and of those, 8 are sequels, 9 if you include the Boogiepop remake. That’s pretty sparse these days, and it made it pretty easy to make a lot of early cuts, made up for by the fact that I’m gonna be spending a lot of it watching the shows from last season that are still going (of which there are a strangely high number).
Before I get too into this, though, I want to clarify my rules now that I’ve nailed them down and it’s a new year.
Lists will be divided into Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Multi (any show lasting more than thirteen episodes and ending this year) and Netflix (any show picked up by Netflix, because they don’t simulcast and because they have enough original titles now that it’s easiest to rank them against each other). For the sake of these bigger posts, “Multi” impressions will be placed in the masterpost for the season they premiered with, but they’ll be sectioned off.
That means that, for example, Sword Art Online Alicization will be ranked for 2019 even though it started last year. This makes more sense to me than waiting a whole year to write the 2018 wrap-up just for the sake of one show, and Forest of Piano 2 and Kakeguruixx won’t be appearing on this list, they’ll go on the Netflix one at the end of the year.
With that, the numbers!
28 shows premiered for simulcasting that should end this season and last 13 episodes or less.
8 shows were skipped entirely, for the following reasons:
* Date A Live III, Kemono Friends 2, B Project: Zeccho Emotion, BanG Dream Season 2, and Real Girl Season 2 because I didn’t watch/finish the previous seasons. Techincally W’z should be here too, but I wound up making a post about it.
* Wataten! because I don’t give attention to that crap.
* VIRTUALSAN LOOKING because I don’t understand why Crunchyroll even picked up a show that relies entirely on virtual youtubers in Japan when Americans might be familiar with Kizuna Ai.
* Bermuda Triangle because I forgot it existed right up until the end and had no indication that it was worth my time anyway.
10 shows were dropped after the first episode. In no particular order:
* The Price of Smiles, Meiji Tokyo Renka and Pastel Memories because the ending twist wasn’t as compelling as the show thought it was.
* W’z for being a passion project from a director and producer whose only talent is wasting the potential of their staff on this story concept.
* Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka for not having enough original ideas to prop up incredibly lackluster execution.
* Grimms Notes the Animation for not having the execution to make its original ideas work in the show’s favor. (see what I did there, they’re parallel)
* Domestic Girlfriend for giving me a melodrama without an interesting lead. (This is the one I’m most likely to give another chance, should I drop too many of the shows I picked up.)
* Dimension High School but only because I don’t want anyone to think I’m recommending it because it’s good or anything. Would still be perfect for a good drunk weeb night.
* Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho for being the worst-looking show of the season and staining the name of a long-standing franchise.
* Kemurikusa for proving that its director didn’t learn much from the success of his previous work, including how to make his shows look better.
9 shows were picked up after the first episode, 2 of which I was unsure of:
* Kaguya-sama: Love is War because I love the direction and characters but can see myself growing annoyed with the concept.
* Girly Air Force because my judgment of its quality will be based heavily on the female cast, and we didn’t get to see much of them in the first episode.
And 7 of which I was more confident in:
* Mob Psycho 100 II and The Morose Mononokean II for obvious reasons (they’re sequels to shows I enjoyed).
* The Magnificent Kotobuki for being the only decent-looking CG show of the season and providing an excellent (and lengthy) action sequence in the first episode that totally sold me on watching dogfights.
* Endro! for being incredibly charming and creating a fun fantasy world that doesn’t get bogged down in RPG details.
* My Roommate is a Cat for giving me some much-needed accuracy in the field of cat-based anime.
* The Quintessential Quintuplets for being a harem show that looked like it might have an interesting plot and non-excessive fanservice.
* The Promised Neverland for having a ton of creative verve put behind a show that follows the current trend of kid-based horror.
3 shows premiered that are already confirmed to have more than 13 episodes, 1 of which I dropped:
* The Rising of the Shield Hero for just being okay right up to the point that it gave me blinding, seething fury.
And 2 of which I picked up, 1 of which I was cautious of:
* Boogiepop and Others, for being interesting but possibly a little too slow on the burn and very lazily made.
And 1 I was much, much more confident in:
* Dororo for being a very cool-looking interpretation of the work of Osamu Tezuka and having the coolest fight scene out of any of these premieres.
MOST IMPRESSIVE PREMIERE: The Promised Neverland
Maybe I’m predictable, but come on, when the first thing I can think to compare a show to is Made in Abyss, it’s doing something right. The Promised Neverland was probably the most-hyped show of Winter, and it gave us a premiere that demonstrated exactly why by tantalizing us with its mysterious setting before the big twist turned the atmosphere from “weirdly muted” to “complete horror”, and pulling off the only good bait and switch in a season that was fucking full of them.
Speaking of which...
WORST PREMIERE: The Rising of the Shield Hero
I’m not putting a GIF here because the first three pages of GIFs that Tumblr offered me for Shield Hero were all of Raphtalia, who appears to be the designated best girl of the season despite the show in question being easily the worst of the bunch and a strong contender for worst of the year already. My problem with this show is already known (and surprisingly, I only got one comment with the word “triggered” in it) and nothing besides Saintia Sho enraged me this much, but at least Saintia Sho just revealed itself to be poorly-made schlock instead of well-produced propaganda! Fuck this show.
And that’s it! The last lists for 2018 are coming soon, I promise, and I probably won’t be doing updated impressions this time around (because the season is already nearly over anyway), so stay tuned for my thoughts on the last few things I haven’t covered yet. Catch you guys soon.

It’s good writing not to just give away the punch line right from the start. I’ve tried to become a better blogger by reading a number of writing guides and essays for post format. They suggest vague titles that give you a good idea of the content but don’t give away too much. Your posts are supposed to build up to something then end on a punch. You want to give your readers a reason to keep on reading so the payoff has to come at the end.
Don’t just show your hand right off the bat. And all I have to say about My Ill Deeds Are the Work of God (the episode’s title in case you’re confused), is dayum….
I never learn
As has been pointed out by astute readers, so far I have had a marked weak sport for the episode arcs of Bungo Stray Dogs which are based on Light Novels rather than the manga proper. It’s not that I don’t like the main storyline, I obviously do, but the mini arcs have been more satisfying for me, so far. This is why I wanted that opener to last as long as possible. Nevertheless, I was looking forward to the main action of this season.
Not that many of you read these reviews, and I assume less bother to go through the comments, but those who have know that I was eagerly looking forward to Dostoyevsky’s grand entrance. This is not just some national kinship between russians and surprisingly it’s not entirely due to my appreciation of the character design either. Rather it has to do with the myriad of connections between Bungo Stray Dogs’ narrative and the real world counterparts of the characters.
I have no clue who Ace is suppose to be
This anime has led me down a rabbit hole of classical literature and authors biographies like no other. I thought for a while of creating a post entirely on the subject but instead, I’m going to pepper the easter eggs I particularly like in my reviews, whenever pertinent. And the reason I was looking forward to this season is because of the novel No Longer Human.
No longer Human is the name of Dazai’s ability. It is also the best known novel of the real world Osamu Dazai (although my favourite is Otogizōshi). In this book, which is widely acknowledged to be a lightly fictionalized autobiography, we follow the slow and seemingly inevitable decline of a young man called Ōba as he becomes increasingly disenchanted with people in general and himself in particular. Right before the last act, as Ōba seems to be slowly getting his life back together after a particularly dark period, he is visited by an old friend and bad influence that hammers the last nail in his coffin and sends him swan diving into oblivion.
appropriate and spoilery!
The scene that marks the final and ultimate turn for Ōba shows him and Horiki (said old friend) discussing Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. It is a pivotal moment in Ōba’s life and therefore Dazai’s, and Dostoevsky is a symbol of it.
Bringing the two together in the narrative of Bungo Stray Dogs was bound to be interesting as the story has been delightfully meticulous in integrating the real life events and works of the authors that serve as namesakes to the cast.
But we have not yet seen these two together. In fact, apart from a few brief glimpses (guest appearances really) of Mori and Koyo, all the characters in this episode were complete strangers to me. I had no connection or attachment to them, aside from my feelings for real world Dostoevsky, whose entire bibliography I had to read for school at one time or another. It was a simple establishing episode to introduce Fyodor’s character, ment as mostly informational. And I was mesmerised.
oh Karma…
I cared and feared for those people whose names I can’t tell you. I was a little nervous throughout those conversations. Ace, the Port Mafia executive vying to overthrow Mori was a decent enough bad guy, with an interesting design but an impractical power, while Karma (I had to look up his name) seemed like a promising conflicted villain. I can’t say that the characters themselves were all that special but something in the pacing and presentation made me constantly worry for them. Especially Karma.
And that something is Fyodor. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t exactly a one man show. Those two were fantastic foil that really brought out the potential of the character. But boy is Dostoevsky the antagonist I’ve been waiting for. He’s chilling and exhilarating at once. His presence is bound to revitalize this franchise. And his voice actor is tremendous. I don’t usually go for these lighter more sing songy voices but his delivery was spot on. How can such a pleasant tone be so scary? He might just be my favourite in the cast.
tell me more!
From the little we know he seems to be the disturbingly calm mastermind with a lighthearted attitude but deadly intent, type. That was a lot of words in a row. I do not know how to identify types properly. Basically, he falls into the exact same category as Dazai, Mori and to a lesser extent Ranpo. Maybe someday I’ll tell you about the real Dostoevsky he had quite a life, although nothing compared to those Japanese authors. Honestly, true to life biographies may have been more extravagant and difficult to believe than the show!
The other thing we know about Dostoevsky is that he is ruthless. Much more than is usual for this series and that explosive ending caught me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting things to be quite that intense in the main story. Suffice it to say that this season has my full attention right now. And after getting a bit of a better look at Fyodor, as much s I do want to see the confrontation with Dazai, I really want to see him take on Mori. So far, that does seem to be the plan!
I have some news for you…
Besides that, we got ur first look at the min OP and EDs. hat OP sure was fancy with all the CG and stuff. I actually liked it even though I sounded snippy just there. I did notice someone that looks a bit like Natsume Soseki (we saw him with Oda in season 2). Soseki is possibly one of the best known classical Japanese novelists and I’m surprised he hasn’t been ore present in the series so far.
Speaking of Oda, we also see him in the ED. Not sure if it’s just an image for fans of the show or whether we’re actually going to see him a bit again this season. Either way, I was glad he isn’t forgotten. I do have a soft spot for the man.
All in all this was a powerful start to the third season and I can’t wait to see more. I hope you’re all enjoying it as much as I am. Let’s share this ride!
and I’m here for it!
Of course I took a ton of caps but this is actually a lot less than I thought I would have ended up with. Discipline!
Bungo Stray Dogs 3 – 4: Red Dawn It's good writing not to just give away the punch line right from the start. I've tried to become a better blogger by reading a number of writing guides and essays for post format.

Hi, um, if possible, could you write a little!ranpo and little!dazai with cg!fukuzawa fic? Um, thank you
- um anon
do not repost anywhere, please!
Nothing a father shouldn't do. Little!Ranpo and Little!Dazai with CG!Fukuzawa.
Workdays weren't always exhausting, but sometimes anything was too much. Everything could leave you feeling overwhelmed, and that was the exhausting part of the day.
At least for both Dazai and Ranpo.
It was afternoon at the ADA, and only the two of them had stayed inside, as they still needed to finish writing some reports and filling out paperwork, it was something quick, but it was taking them longer than usual to do. Looking at the clock, the anxiety only increased and time seemed to pass faster and faster. It made Dazai feel extremely pressured, and Ranpo realized this in less than a second. With a sigh, the shorter one got up from the chair and approached the taller one, gently placing his hand on Osamu's shoulder who quickly let out a tired sigh.
"'Samu... we don't have to finish this today." Ranpo said in a low voice. "but I'm too small to keep writing..." ..Ah. It's not like Ranpo hasn't already noticed. The two had already returned together, Ranpo had already taken care of Dazai and vice versa, but it was the first time that the two were little together. And of course Dazai had noticed it too.
And now? All they could do was sit. put your head on the table and or sleep or under into the papers. But before they did that, Fukuzawa approached the two. Were they this obvious...?
"I am sorry, but I can't keep two little guys with so much homework, can I?"
( I am so sorry,.. I cant keep writing after that, my creativity ended. :( )

_Summer## - Chiwa-chan route (FINISHED!)
Whew...that took about 10 years. Well not really, I could only really handle about an hour of this game at a time because it’s mentally taxing for me to read that much Japanese. It was really great practice though! I picked up a lot of kanji playing this. There were some aspects of it that were really dumb and the art style is dated but all in all I think this was a really great visual novel! I played the PG-13 rated PS2 version on an emulator so I’m not sure how many hours it took me. If I had to guess I would say anywhere between 20-40.
Thoughts:
-Chiwa-chan is best girl FOR SURE. I’m so glad I picked her. She was cute, funny, had a nice voice, has cool hobbies and was just all around lovable. Her backstory about being a lonely only child who hangs out with neighborhood kids was touching. It made me happy that I “saved her” from that loneliness.
-Seriously, other than maybe Wakana (who I barely saw), the other options in this game were pretty bad. If I had to rank them as to who I would go for next:
1. Wakana - I honestly know zip about her but her route seems like it’s the cool bonus one and that has my curiosity piqued.
2. Shinou - She seems like she’d be fun as a girlfriend. She’s not a doormat and she’s kind of tomboyish. That being said, her design is kinda lame and her voice is very shrill.
3. Sana - ...yeah it’s the imouto route. I’ve got nothing against it, it’s a moe trope. Sana was honestly pretty likeable. Very happy-go-lucky and always sleeping in. I would do her route out of pure curiosity. Like...how do the other characters react?
4. Konami - Konami is the stereotypical “childhood friend” character. I imagine her route would be very predictable. She’s too much of a “submissive wife” type for my tastes and she has an annoying “sexy baby” voice. She’s clearly the “canon” love interest though so I wouldn’t mind giving her route a chance.
5. Hinako - Good GOD her voice made my ears bleed. Her character is basically just a big annoying idiot. She stretches out all her sentences with moans which I suppose is supposed to be sexy. HARD PASS. Also, teacher-student relationships are even worse than imouto relationships lol.
-Honestly although some of the art is very mid-2000s, it was still pretty aesthetically pleasing at times. For example, when Chiwa showed up in that dress (pictured above) and that bathing suit I was like “awwww so pretty!!” Hit me in the moe just right.
-I rewatched the OP just now and the CGs are totally spoiled in it which I think is pretty lame
-Osamu is the most generic “rascal best friend” character ever but I did laugh at some of his scenes. Somehow things are funnier in raw Japanese. I think I just get excited when I understand the joke.
-The no parents ever thing was so forced but I’m ok with it, I don’t need to know their parents lol
-”Master” and the old lady that ran the candy shop were super cute and I loved their commentary about Takumi’s blossoming love
-This was surprisingly wholesome? Since the original game has sex in it I expected more ecchi but maybe I just picked a good route? The writing felt like there was heart behind it and the characters felt developed.
-That moment where it’s revealed that Chiwa and Takumi are dating and all the other girls are like “D:” was awkwaaaaard. Reminded me of Harvest Moon lol.
-This was really good from a slice-of-life point of view. It was really humble story-wise and the school life and work life felt realistic for the most part. I love it when anime focus on work in general (it makes me feel like “maybe working ain’t so bad afterall!)
I had a lot of fun with this and I’ll probably return to it in the future. For the sake of moving on with “Project Alpha” though, I’m going to call the game “completed” for now. Not only will doing the other routes feel like cheating (lol) but it would probably take me like a year. So just like with Dot Hack, this one is “on hold” for now.
I give _Summer## for PS2 a 8 out of 10. I’ll miss my waifu :’(

Hiroshi Nagahama on Mushi-shi, Flowers of Evil, US Comics, and Stop-Motion at Otakon 2019
Otakon 2019 presented us a rare chance for an intimate interview with Director Hiroshi Nagahama. Through both it and a spirited, career-spanning retrospective panel, it became evident that there's a lot more to appreciate about this director than previously thought. Read on as Ink asks Mr. Nagahama about such signature adaptations as Mushi-shi and Flowers of Evil and more.
With Mushi-shi and Flowers of Evil, you produced a very slow, tone-building pace. Are there any specific directors or television series or movies that influenced how you build atmosphere?
Not directors, but Frank Miller from American comics. I was definitely influenced by him. For Batman (Year One) and Daredevil (Born Again), I actually like his version the most. TV drama series that I watched as a kid had a similar atmosphere. Oh, there are actually two anime directors that I was really influenced by: Osamu Dezaki, who made Ashita no Joe, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Wicked City).
You told an audience at a panel that you are a fan of American comics. Have you read Sam Keith’s The Maxx?
I definitely have. I love it. The animation was shocking. It’s the one that was on MTV at midnight, right? I have the comics as well. And since I liked it, I have the 3-D version as well — one of the versions with red and blue glasses and you can see [the characters] popping out. It’s really exciting! There’s the part, in the second part, where Sam Keith wrote it so it would be 3-D, so The Maxx would have his fingers popped out. So when you have the lenses, it’ll pop out of the screen.
Why did you ask about The Maxx?
It seemed to me that you would really enjoy it if you had not heard of it. It has a dark tone and an anti-hero protagonist.
I am actually influenced by the movement of The Maxx. So The Maxx in anime would do this. (Mimics The Maxx’s shuffle) So when you walk and you stop, there’s that strong action. To show that in a fighting scene, when you’re attacking, it called flickering – your arm and your nails would shimmer.
When I was producing Mushi-shi, I was watching The Maxx on a portable DVD player. So I’m definitely inspired by it, but I didn’t follow the same structure as The Maxx.
Regarding Mushi-shi, what direction did you give the animators and storyboard artists working on it to fill in the worlds between Urushibara’s panels?
I didn’t really think about expanding it, but I tried to fill in things that weren’t covered in the manga. Since manga is a very small version, it’s as if I unfrosted or unfroze those parts and added them back.
When someone moves from Point A to Point B in manga, that distance isn’t shown, but in anime, if that shows the story better, then I would start making that from scratch to show the details.
Similarly, in Flowers of Evil, there’s a lot of world building, and a lot of that is done through sound. How did sound direction influence your direction, or was it the other way around, or was it a back-and-forth?
I first made the anime and then the sound that goes with it. I told the sound director that the sound shouldn’t be the part of the anime, so you can even just put no sound if you’d like. I asked the producer of the songs to show one character by one sound (Nagahama makes a “bahhhh” tone), and if one “bahhhh” was the main character, the other (Nagahama says “bahhhhh” in a different tone) would be the main heroine, and every character similarly. So the minimalism of the sound was what I worked on. And the sound director, Tanaka-san, did manage to do that; he represents one character by one sound and another character by another. And if you just listen to the music, it’s revolutionary to anime.
You directed an episode of Rinshi!! Ekodachan, which was fantastic visually and thematically. In your videotaped interview for the show, you said you would like to see a lot more anime go against convention. Do you have any specific styles in mind and any specific properties you might like to apply them to?
I want to do a figure animation someday, like the show called Robot Chicken. I haven’t gotten to make a show where you physically move an object. So I want to do that someday. Or a clay animation.
Any existing properties you have in mind for that?
I don’t know yet. If I see what’s going to come next, I can think about that. Even if it’s a CG or rotoscope, if that fits that anime and that structure, then that’s the way to go.
A huge thank you to Mr. Nagahama for his time as well as to Otakon Press and Guest Staff for the opportunity.
