The Employer-Based Social Safety Is a Disaster. We Can End It.

Companies can do math … Classic defined benefit pensions are the single most costly benefit that employers traditionally provided, when you add up their total cost over the lifetime of workers. So, for more than 40 years, unionized companies have been absolutely cutthroat at the bargaining table in their determination to shift their workers into 401(k)s. Over the decades, in the private sector, pension after pension has fallen, each a lost battle in an economic war.

Even the man who invented the 401(k) now acknowledges that this process has been a financial catastrophe for workers.

I am not bringing this up just to bemoan the fact that companies are greedy. Yes, companies are greedy, but that is because they are in essence machines programmed to maximize profits, so cursing them for being greedy is like yelling at a beaver for making a dam. That is what they do.

What the fuck are we doing? This is all very dumb.

If America were a rational nation we would have sat down after WW2 and said, “Well, we rule the world and we are about to be so, so rich, we’d better just pass a sensible piece of legislation providing for health care and retirement and child care and other basic necessities for all, like a normal and reasonable country.” Of course we did not do that. Instead, deep in Cold War psychosis, we evolved our way into a system that provided health insurance for most people from the employers, which may be a crazy way to do it but is definitely NOT COMMUNIST. Then later we kind of grafted on Medicare to try to plug the hole for people left out of this system. The evolution of employer-provided benefits has continued for generations. But our original sin was allowing ourselves to be drawn into this plainly inferior system in the first place.

Not to get super technical here but, because private companies are constantly trying to maximize profits, they have an ENORMOUS and NEVER-ENDING incentive to chip away at the cost of employee benefits. So it is unsurprising that, over time, such benefits will be jettisoned by employers at the first possible opportunity. I know I am speaking in generalities here, but this pretty much captures the trap we have gotten into: 1) Tie necessary life-sustaining benefits to employment, rather than building a universal public government-funded safety net. 2) Erode the unions which are the only force that prevent companies from engaging in a race to the bottom on the quality of these benefits. 3) The benefits go away and people die. In a mature and serious country, “workplace benefits” would be things like, you know, “a variety of free bagels.” Not stuff like “your health insurance” or “your ability to avoid poverty in your old age.” Remarkably stupid system. Really idiotic.

The “gig economy” is, in aggregate, an attempt by capital to build a system of employment with no employees. Companies have realized that if you can turn every full-time employee into an independent contractor and every job into a gig, then you can escape the responsibility of paying benefits (and enjoy a work force that is legally unable to unionize). The gig economy is the arbitraging away of the employer-based social safety net. The savings go to the investment class. The model, as you can see, expands to the entire economy, sucking in not just Uber drivers but also adjunct professors. The root cause of this is that we have created an enormous financial incentive for companies to get out of playing the role of Real Employer, which comes with a host of demands for employee benefits. The people who designed this system should have seen this all coming. If they did, they didn’t care.

You can write books on this topic, of course, and many people have. (One I read recently is “Over Work” by Brigid Schulte, an interesting exploration of various often stymied attempts to make workplace benefits more humane.)

Today, all I want to do is point out the fact that there is an escape route from all of this. This is an issue that presents the opportunity to create a natural alliance of convenience between business and workers. Not because business “cares” about human quality of life, but because business cares about itself.

If you open an ice cream shop, you want to sell ice cream. Do you want to be a health insurance provider? No. Do you want to be a life insurance provider? No. Do you want to be a retirement investment account provider? No. You want to be an ice cream provider. The absurd burden of making businesses into benefit providers weighs most heavily on small businesses, which are forced to pay to outsource this stuff to large firms. The system is predatory and confusing for employers and employees alike. Unfortunately, the logic of capitalism is simply for employers to try to escape their obligations to provide benefits, which leaves employees with nothing.

What needs to change is simply the calculation that employers make about what the path of least resistance is for their own operations. The rise of the gig economy is what happens when employers believe that their best option is just to pretend like none of this is their problem. Yet it is—in the long run, employers need a stable society that creates healthy working people who can survive and are not so desperate that they steal from their employer and also chop up the CEO and throw him in a river.

Employer-based health insurance, a system hated by everyone that benefits nobody except health insurance companies, is probably the single most obvious issue upon which the AFL-CIO and the Chamber of Commerce should be on the same side. Business should be demanding Medicare For All as loudly as Bernie Sanders is! They don’t want to deal with this shit either! All of this is, by definition, a distraction from an employer’s core business, and a financial burden. The same goes for providing retirement benefits to workers. Adequate public health care and adequate Social Security that obviates the need for private health insurance and private retirement plans would be great for American business. It would leave them to just do the thing that they are in business to do.

I don’t want to sound like a naive moron here. In order for the business world writ large to come to this conclusion, the first thing we must do is to close off the easier possibility they now prefer, which is to escape their responsibilities altogether through subcontracting and pushing full time jobs off their books, or whittling down benefit costs to the smallest possible number by eradicating union power. That means that we need to regulate the gig economy out of existence, at least in the sense of requiring gig economy companies to treat their workers like employees rather than independent contractors.

Building a public safety net would mean more taxes for businesses.

But a government system would be more efficient, meaning the long term cost would be lower, and

employers would also get the invaluable gift of never having to think about this shit again.

Providing a necessary social safety net to all citizens is properly the role of the state, not of private business. The very idea of outsourcing this role to private employers is plainly ludicrous.

the wip got some work done to it , the book had a bit more read , i have plans on reading the son of neptune (the second book in heros of olympus) on my own since me and mom have been reading all the pj books together up until now but it is just taking so long that way + she is getting kind of sick of it (she isn't the hugest fan of it somehow-) so i'm probably going to take over and end up reading the odyssey (which i'm only procrastinating bc mom got a series that was made by someone who mainly writes kids books and i'm concerned that it is going to be um dulled down a bunch-) and the rest of this series and onward and the alexander hamilton book (after which i am going to read a thomas jefferson biography bc nothing can stop my history craving self lol)

tomorrow is therapy + i hope to continue work on my claws and possibly make chocolate chip cookies as well

but for now , i'm going to bed because i'm sleepi so goodnight everyone !! :3

Story behind url: gokiburikko = gokiburi + burikko. “gokiburi” is japanese for cockroach, and conveys a sense of resilience and determination. to be a cockroach is to be unbeatable—to stand tall, even when the world doesn’t want you. burikko is a pejorative japanese term for someone who acts overly cutesy, particularly in a way that is often perceived as fake (to curry favor). if that’s what it takes to survive...do you know which character this refers to? 13. 2021: Full-Time Drivers

Up to date as of 3/4/2021.

Sebastian Bourdais

A four-time ChampCar champion, he has also raced in F1 for Toro Rosso and competed in both the 24 hours of Le Mans and the 24 hours of Daytona. One of the most experienced drivers on the grid. In the six seasons he has spent in Indycar, he has competed in 74 races, had six wins, and two poles. Last season he only raced in three events for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, and competed in the IMSA WeatherTech Series. This season he will race the 14 entry for A.J. Foyt Enterprises.

Scott Dixon

No one really knows how he is so good at racing in Indycar. He is the defending champion going into this season and has a total of six Indycar championships and one Indy 500 title to his name. He has often been compared to Lewis Hamilton. In the 18 seasons he has spent in Indycar, he has competed in 289 races, had 49 wins, and 29 poles, and is one of the winningest drivers in Indycar history. This season he will continue to race the 9 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Marcus Ericsson

After competing in 97 races for the Sauber F1 Team, he signed with Chip Ganassi and began racing in Indycar. He will be starting his third full season in the sport. In his previous two seasons, he competed in 18 races and has one podium finish. He will continue to drive the 8 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Jack Harvey

He competed in many forms of racing prior to his Indycar debut in 2017 including British F3, GP3, and Indy Lights, and was the 2012 British F3 champion. Prior to 2020, he drove only part-time for Meyer-Shank Racing as they tried to find their way into the series full-time. In the four seasons he has raced in Indycar, he competed in 29 races and has one podium finish. He will continue to race the 60 entry for Meyer-Shank Racing in his second full season.

Colton Herta

He staked his name in the history books by becoming the youngest Indycar race winner at COTA in 2019. The son of Brian Herta, he has quickly become a fan-favorite and a strong competitor. In his two seasons (plus the season finale of 2018) in Indycar, he has competed in 32 races, had three wins, and four poles. This season he will drive the 26 Andretti Autosport entry, taking over the car vacated by Zach Veach.

James Hinchcliffe

A fan favorite, returning to full-time status this season. Makes a podcast with Alexander Rossi called ‘Off Track with Hinch and Rossi’. Has also competed on Dancing with the Stars and was a part time broadcaster for NBCSN. In his 10 seasons in Indycar, he has achieved six wins, 17 podium finishes, and one pole position. This season he will drive the 29 entry for Andretti Autosport.

Ryan Hunter-Reay

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Captain America’, and the victim of an unfortunate sandwich meat ad campaign. He was crowned series champion in 2012 and became Indy 500 champion in 2014. He can often be seen on the grid with his two kids, often dressed in mini firesuits to match. In his 14 seasons, he has competed in 211 races, had 16 wins, and six poles. He will continue to race the 28 entry for Andretti Autosport.

Ed Jones

Not a familiar face to new fans, but he’s done this song and dance before. He last raced in Indycar in 2018, and has raced previously for Dale Coyne Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Ed Carpenter Racing. This will be his first official racing ride since the 2018 season. In his previous three seasons, he scored three podium finishes. This season, he will race the 18 car for Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan.

Dalton Kellett

He is much less frightening than the above picture makes him out to be (I promise). He has worked his way up the Road to Indy ladder and made his Indycar debut last season, driving part time for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, while also competing in the IMSA WeatherTech Series. Makes a podcast called D2Speedcast. He competed in five races last season and his best finish was 20th at Road America (both). This season he will race the 4 entry for A.J. Foyt Enterprises in his first full season in Indycar.

Scott McLaughlin

One of only two rookies on the Indycar grid this season (but can either of them really be called rookies?). He is a three-time Australian Supercars champion and raced for Team Penske before they decided to pull their Supercars program. He made his debut in the season finale of the 2020 season at St. Petersburg though he failed to finish. He will race the 3 entry for Team Penske.

Josef Newgarden

He is a two-time Indycar Series champion, an Indy Lights champion, and a strong fan favorite. He has starred in many PR campaigns such as “Josef Newgarden Incognito”, “The Offseason”, “Shirts4Sage”, and “The Penske Games”. Has a vlog titled #AdmitOne. In his nine seasons in Indycar, he has competed in 148 races, has 18 wins, and 11 poles. He will drive the 2 entry (formerly the 1 entry) for Team Penske.

Pato O’Ward

Simon Pagenaud

Can hula-hoop on a regular day (not really). He is the 2016 series champion and the 2019 Indy 500 Champion. As evidenced by the Penske Games, good at racing and not party games. His dog Norman is also pictured on his Baby Borg-Warner Trophy. In his previous 10 seasons, he has achieved 15 wins, 35 podium finishes, and 14 pole positions. This season, he will continue to drive the 22 entry for Team Penske.

Alex Palou

He has competed previously in Super GT, Super Formula, and F3 European Championship. Last season was his rookie season driving for Dale Coyne Racing, and he achieved one podium finish. This season, he will race the 10 car for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Will Power

If you’re not following his Instagram you’re missing out. One of the most successful active drivers in Indycar. He is the 2014 series champion and 2018 Indycar champion. In his 13 seasons in Indycar (not including the three years in Champ Car prior to the merge), he has achieved 37 wins, 70 podium finishes, and 52 pole positions. This season he will continue to drive the 12 entry for Team Penske.

Graham Rahal

He’s the son of 1986 Indy 500 Champion Bobby Rahal, and an avid car guy. Owns a performance shop and regularly hosts Cars and Coffee there. Probably the tallest driver in the paddock. In his previous 13 seasons, he has achieved six wins, 25 podium finishes, and three pole positions. This season he will continue to drive the 15 entry for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Felix Rosenqvist

One of two Swedes currently racing in the Indycar Series. He has previously raced in DTM and F3 European Championship. In his previous two seasons in Indycar, he has achieved one win, three podiums, and one pole position. This season, he will race the 7 car for Arrow McLaren SP.

Alexander Rossi

A fan favorite, but can’t do donuts correctly. Makes a podcast with James Hinchcliffe called ‘Off Track with Hinch and Rossi’ where they talk about everything except racing. He is the 2016 Indy 500 Champion and has raced in F1 for Marussia. In his five seasons in Indycar, he has achieved seven wins, 23 podiums, and six pole positions. This season he will continue to race the 27 entry for Andretti Autosport.

Takuma Sato

Nicknamed ‘Taco’ by his team, currently the only Japanese driver in the field. He is the defending Indy 500 champion and has won the 500 twice. Previously raced in F1 for Jordan, BAR, and Super Aguri. In his 11 seasons in Indycar, he has achieved six wins, 14 podium finishes, and 10 pole positions. This season he will continue to race the 30 entry for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Rinus VeeKay

The only Dutch driver on the grid, last season’s Rookie of the Year. He is also the 2018 Pro Mazda Champion and has also raced in Indy Lights. In his rookie year in Indycar, he achieved one podium finish and one pole position. This season he will continue to race the 21 entry for Ed Carpenter Racing.

loI was tagged by the lovely @bnhastanning! I’m sorry this took so long - I’ve been procrastinating all of my work and i had to take care of it before did this but now? watashi ga kita motherbuckets.

1 - What was the last thing you were really excited about?

Not gonna lie, things are a bit bleak at the moment, but I suppose I was very happy because I did really well on my last lesson test in my Japanese class and I raised my cumulative grade by a whole percentage! I am not very good at it but if I do decently for the rest of term I think I can make my way up to an A-, which would be really cool!

2 - What do you wish someone taught you long ago?

Don’t be so singularly focused on your goals and responsibilities that everything else is removed from your life. Most of my middle and high school career, I was focused only on achieving what I needed academically and extracurricularly, and pushing myself beyond what I really could handle, that I ended up overworked and lonely. If it puts it into perspective, in my 10th grade year, I not only had multiple people ask me if I had taken a semester away because I had spent so much time hiding in the library, but I literally gave myself an ulcer from stress and taking on other people’s responsibilities because I had painted myself into a position where I was never allowed to refuse. While I did get to achieve beyond what I ever could have dreamed of (and I’m really proud of myself for that), theres a lot of my adolescence that I have a sort of phantom nostalgia for, and that’s something I really regret.

Your life needs to have balance to it. Make sure you find that early on, and understand how to equally prioritize your own well being with what you want and what other’s want from you.

3 - What are some of your guilty pleasures?

Not doing the reading for class lmao. As someone who never once skipped the reading until I graduated HS, skipping some of the reading in college, when I end up having around cumulative 500 pages per week is quite nice. I wish I had something less goody-two-shoes but I do nothing and also have zero (0) shame.

4 - What topic could you give a twenty minute presentation on without any preparation?

There’s a couple of different things I could talk about in differing qualities ranging from classical ballet scores to a linguistic breakdown of a hamilton song, and of course I could go off about bnha for a long time, but I’m gonna go with a fun one.

My most fun answer is that I could talk about racism and race correction in Harry Potter for like three hours. Black Hermione is god tier fanon, and JKR’s attempts to race correct her make me really frustrated, not only with the problems with the action itself, but as well with the nonchalance she attempted to do it with. I have a bit of a ‘cheat’ on this one, because last year I wrote a ~5000 word academic research paper on the subject. I was already really passionate about it before that though (that’s why I wrote it in the first place); the only difference now is I can spit out narrative and numerical facts™ off the cuff, and my argument would be better organized.

5 - What scene in a movie or tv show gives you goosebumps every time you watch it?

I don’t really have an answer for this, which is kind of sad but also hilarious considering what my parent’s jobs are. If I had to pick something, I don’t really have a scene in particular, but the movie Amadeus (the extended directors cut edition) is one of my favorites that leaves me breathless in the best of ways.

6 - What were some of your favorite holiday traditions growing up?

One of my favorites is that every year since I was little, my mother and I would pick out either 1-3 new ornaments for our tree. I remember being little and walking into the Macy’s Christmas section and just being dazzled by the lights, and typically, we would pick out some white and gold porcelain birds. As I got older, are choices started coming from more small time shops, like a kiosk in hawaii or a small knick-knack shop near the place where we occasionally ski in the winter. For me, it’s really the act of going and picking out something beautiful with her that’s really nice.

A newer tradition is that every year I bake chocolate-chip bread pudding in a dutch oven. I am, unequivocally, the best baker in the family both immediate and extended, though not the best chef, and this became a hit around the time I was 15. It’s just really fun to make -- I like to belt out to Christmas songs while I bake.

7 - What book had the most significant impact on you?

HARD QUESTION. There’s a bunch of different ways I could answer this: the impact on the way I think, the first chapter book I read on my own that helped me discover my love of reading, my favorite example of intricate world building? I have a lot I could say. The direction I’m going to go for is the impact on my writing, and the one of the first books that really made me marvel at the beauty of words, just as they are. My two runners up are The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson, but my final answer is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

Representation aspects aside (but also, yes!), this book was one of the first books that made me feel emotion for the words themselves. It’s more of a character study than it is plot driven, and as a kid who grew up loving action adventure fantasy novels, I think that’s one of the reasons it really stood out to me. I pulled an excerpt, just to give the gist:

I stared at the reproduced mural in the book -- but I was more interested in his finger as he tapped the book with approval. That finger had pulled a trigger in a war. That finger had touched my mother in tender ways I did not fully comprehend. I wanted to talk, to say something, to ask questions. But I couldn’t. All the words were stuck in my throat. So I just nodded.

One of my favorite things now is to play with words, to roll them around on my tongue and isolate their melodies, placing them in them in rhythm to a beat only I can hear, and I think that this was the first book that showed me how to do that.

8 - What weird thing do you have nostalgia for?

So I went to a small school for all the way up until college; about 45 kids in my sixth grade class, 22ish in my homeroom/main class. There were four kids, including me, that had an aptitude for math, and understood the lessons without being taught them, and so what my teacher would do is give us the homework packet for the week and send us out to the outdoor benches next to our classroom to complete it during the period. We, being 11, would goof around Monday through Thursday and do the entire packet in the Friday period and then turn it in. Not the best teaching decision (i wish i had been taught the next year’s material tbh) but that’s not the point.

It was just a year, but those periods felt so untouchable and surreal and innocent. I remember, the school was so quiet, and it was just us, and we were just kids who were getting away with not learning math for a whole year, and it felt like the greatest victory in the world.

9 - What's a problem you have, that might be entirely unique to you?

I don’t know how unique it is, but the intensity with which I currently need to pet a dog is unparalleled.

10 - What are two of your favorite snacks?

I literally eat an apple with peanut butter on a daily basis I cannot emphasize this enough i am, a slut, for peanut butter.

There’s also this specific Costco Brand trail mix that I literally have eaten so much of that I got nauseous. We love Kirkland Signature™ up in this house.
