Miguel O' Hara - AU Scientist (Across the Spider-Verse) - Chapter 2

You’d walked in the next morning a bit distracted.

“Wait a minute, is he my boyfriend?”

He said he wanted to date you, but you both haven’t actually gone on a date, so technically were you together.

“MIGUEL ARE WE GIRLFRIEND AND BOYFRIEND!!”

Shouting that in the lab the minute you stepped in probably wasn’t the best option. All eyes were on you and Miguel shrunk back under the attention. You grimace, sending him an apologetic look.

Lyla just stood at the back with the widest grin on her face.

“Sorry about that, sometimes I can get a bit in my head.”

“It’s alright. I probably should have made a better effort of explaining what we were.” You were both now alone in the lab, writing up reports from your last activity.

Miguel could see the happy smile on your face as you stayed on task.

“I’ve had feelings for you since we met.”

That caught your attention. The pen slowly lowered from your fingers, and he briefly contemplated taking the words back. His eyes quickly darted in the opposite direction.

“I’m not sure if you know this, but I’m on the spectrum.”

There’s a somber tone that follows the confession.

“I don’t think, internalize or express my feelings the same way. Although my disability is somewhat mild compared to others, it’s a part of who I am. Over the years I’ve been able to slowly push myself past the more rooted parts of my life. But sometimes this can be debilitating and that could affect my partner. It has affected most relationships in my life. Romantic and or otherwise.”

It’s clear that you need to make your own confession.

“I figured that out a few days after we met.”

His dark eyes hold a level of shock. You just rub your arm.

“Most of the people in this place hold degrees in the application of science in the world. I have multiple degrees and not all of them are applied in this field. Before I came here I worked with the FBI in behavioral science and forensics.”

His eyes light up in interest.

“You were a profiler?”

“I was. That’s why I understand what you go through. Most behaviors are easily explained by science. The way our brains function, process information. All of it is connected. I didn’t really think it was my place to confront you. Getting to this point given what you deal with must not have been easy. I think it’s incredible how much you’ve accomplished. I guess that’s..what I really fell in love with.”

He’s relieved, but also a bit frightened now.

“So you understand that certain physical aspects are..harder for me..”

His hand is on the table, and you nod.

“I understand. Miguel I don’t expect anything from you. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You’re you, I’d never force you into anything. We can discover what we are in the future. Now that we both know how we feel, we have time to figure it all out. “

You don’t reach for his hand, and he can’t help but cast his memory back to all those times that you’d inadvertently accommodated him. He couldn’t believe that he hadn’t realized it before. Even now, your hand is so close to his on the table, but you don’t initiate any contact. His eyes are laser focused, then they move to your brilliant eyes. He leans closer and he can see the uncertainty in your eyes.

“Miguel you really don’t have to-”

“I want to.”

His eyes are firmly planted on your lips. You swallow, because this is moving a lot quicker than you expected. You had literally prepared yourself to wait a few months just to hold his hand. Now that it’s happening, you’re a bit unprepared. Miguel slides out of his seat, and when he stands, he’s towering you. His gaze brings in all kinds of feelings throughout your body.

“Can I?”

“Yes!”

That’s what your mind says, but your lips have forgotten how to function.

“I..umm..y-you..”

His brows furrow, a slight look of worry.

“Is it too much?”

You shake your head vigorously.

“N-No it’s not!” You huff, trying to calm yourself down.

“I-I’m sorry. I guess I just convinced myself that I’d be waiting for you. Now that it’s happening I’m a little nervous. “

Relief crosses his face.

“You’re nervous too?”

“I am. You always make me act so crazy.”

You laugh softly and Miguel smiles. He takes a step, and you refocus your gaze up. His hand reaches out slowly, and you anticipate it eagerly. His palm cups your cheek. You nearly melt at how warm his hand feels. How much you’ve craved to be touched like this. Touched by him. A soft breath leaves your lips, and Miguel’s approach is slow. You can tell that he needs a moment to prepare himself for the sensation that will follow. It all drags by so painfully slow. The minute his lips touch your own, you feel your stomach do frantic flips. Your brows knit, because it’s as soft as you anticipate. You can’t help it, you moan, and Miguel pulls back.

Your eyes snap open, and you instinctively create space.

“I-I’m sorry!”

Miguel licks his lips. You expect panic, but what you see is the complete opposite.

“A-Are you okay?”

“Asombrosa..”

He doesn’t say anything else.

He just moves back in and you squeak when his lips press so insistently against your own. Your heart is beating harshly against your chest. Miguel has a hand secured at your waist and the other slides easily into your hair. This time you don’t even try to cover the moan. It spills out, and Miguel swallows every sound of desperation that you release.

He’s kissing you as if you’re the best thing he’s ever tasted and you cannot be any happier. The man who’d always avoided physical contact is holding you as if you would disappear if he even blinks. You grip at his lab coat, and it’s as if he’s encouraged. You gasp when he picks you right off the floor and your legs move around his waist unconsciously. You’re breathing heavily, Miguel isn’t much better. You both have finally stopped for a moment.

You aren’t sure what’s more impressive, how easily he holds your weight, or the fact that his hands are actually on your body. You’re a bit hesitant to let your hands move anywhere other than their current location on his shoulders. When you finally gather your breath, you blush.

“That was nice..” You say bashfully.

“It was extraordinary.”

Miguel’s eyes have gone a shade darker, and you lecture yourself to keep your composure.

You need to stay on your guard.

This adorable man might actually be the death of you.

You couldn’t have predicted that within the five or so minutes you were gone, a surprise in the form of a flower awaited you.

For a short time frame, you had gotten up to scour the wooden shelves for a particular reference book you needed for your essay. It was relatively easy to find— though your school’s library didn’t have the biggest assemblage, the title was sought-after enough to have a few copies provided by the faculty. With little to no detour you immediately went back to the table you, and only you, occupied, only to become momentarily stupefied.

It was a bit of a sight to behold, not by its size but instead how it misplaced it looked against its backdrop— a striking shade of purple against the white, lined papers your notes were hastily written on.

For quite some time, you inspected it as though it was a foreign entity; in truth, you recognised nearly every aspect of it. From the filler baby’s breath accenting the singular flower, to the white tissue papers wrapped the flower, to the dainty little ribbon with a flower shop’s name tying the whole thing up nicely.

Everything was familiar about it save for one thing— the addresser.

You pulled out what would surely be a hint to who sent it, a letter, maybe even a name that would designate the flower surely wasn’t for you.

Somehow, the sight of the pastel yellow paper made your cheeks flush more than the flower itself. Despite not having read anything yet, holding the heart-shaped origami envelope between your fingers made you realise that, yes, there was a pretty high chance that someone meant to give you these— that someone liked you enough to give you something with romantic intentions, albeit not in person.

As you unfolded the envelope, you couldn’t help the quiet giggle that left your system. Five words, as simple as they were, were enough to draw a smile upon your face as you found yourself rereading the slightly messy handwriting several times over.

I like you a lot!

Head shooting up, you scanned the room for anyone who could have possibly placed it there— if not him or her, at least an accomplice? To your disappointment, you doubted the people in the mostly vacant room had anything to do with it.

Doing your best to fold the paper back to its original design, you pondered what to do next— what would happen next. Was this just a one-time thing? Were they going to do something again? Would they actually confess to you?

Beyond giddiness over a potential admirer, it was hard not to feel curious over a guy who gifts you a flower from the very same flower shop you part-timed in.

…

As two weeks go by without a noise from them, you figured they had either planned that to be a one-time, doing this to move on thing, or perhaps that the whole thing was some elaborate, weird joke by someone in school.

It was pretty clear to you they didn’t want to be found, if you were to base it on the fact that they gave you no clues to their identity whatsoever, save for their handwriting and the fact that they knew some degree of origami. If they even made it themselves.

… well, technically you could just ask your boss about the appearance or anything of who bought that particular bouquet but that didn’t seem very moral of a choice.

Honestly, you didn’t think you’d ever find out who gave it at this rate,

until you did.

Undeniably, the way you put two and two together was incredibly anti-climatic and all around simple.

“Taichi-kun, do you want to split the work? Like, me doing odd and you doing the even numbers?” he seemed to tense up the moment you talked to him, and you couldn’t help but wonder if you had said something wrong. Maybe he wasn’t that good with this particular topic? You couldn’t say it was your favourite lesson either, so maybe it would be better to just help each other out?

“Actually, we can answer it together too! We have the time,” you added quickly, looking at him to gauge his reaction. Without any time spared for you to worry, he seemed to instantaneously beam like the sun, a warm glow accompanying him, cheeks dusted with red, a few shades lighter than his hair.

“Yeah! Let’s work on it together!” his exclamation caught you off-guard— it was unusual for someone to act like an excitable puppy over a 20 item math pair-work worksheet of all things, but all the same it was quite adorable!

You pushed your desks together so the both of you could answer the paper properly, barely any side by side distance between the two of you save for the wooden chairs which you two sat on.

The realisation wasn’t gradual. Actually, it was rather immediate— perhaps you’d spent too much time staring at the 5 words he wrote down, but the moment he started writing both of your names on the paper you already knew it was him.

You’d be lying if you said the initial appeal of this, whatever this was, wasn’t the idea of someone liking you; now that you were 99% sure it was Taichi, however, the feeling of delight and thrill didn’t go away whatsoever.

He hardly knew you, you were sure of that much! You definitely barely knew anything about him, too, save for a few instances where you’d work together as a group or through unintentionally eavesdropping here and there.

… but while you couldn’t (immediately) reciprocate, you couldn’t deny wanting to get to know the guy who gave you a flower with that kind of meaning, whether he knew it or not.

“Taichi-kun, you’re good at origami, right?” you mentioned suddenly, not failing to notice how your seat mate seemed to perk up like a puppy’s ears would. Cute? Was he always like this?

“W-wait, you noticed?!” as soon the words left his lips he began to fumble, trying and failing to take back his words before settling for just straight-up admitting to it. “Ehe, I think I am! If you request something, I can make it!”

His moment of confidence rendered a smile out of you, although… since he offered… perhaps you could take the chance to do one last verification? You momentarily wanted him to make the litter heart envelope you’d been cherishing quite recently, but perhaps that was too simple.

“Can you do flower origami?”

“Yep! Tulips, lotus flowers, lilies, you name it!”

“Wahh, that’s cool! How about—“ the moment the name of the flower left your lips, Taichi’s pen nearly fell from his fingers. His face had already gone as bright as his hair, but you couldn’t help but tease him, at least one last time.

“We had them at the flower shop I part-time in,” you could practically see the cogs in his head turning the more you talked, until he let out a noise with semblance of a whine and a gasp the moment the name of your workplace escaped your throat.

Though you weren’t the most confrontational or assertive of people, you really couldn’t help yourself— a little teasing side of you opened up from trying to match his vibes.

It was as though, despite the multiple sources of noise coming from all directions, your mind only focused on the two of you, and how else your relationship would continue from today.

“ thank you for your hard work today at the flower shop! here, feel free to take home this gloxinia with you~ ”

when you sleep, do you dream of me?

summary: dreams and nightmares are all too familiar to ricky goldsworth (week 16 of my 30 weeks of writing prompts challenge: dreams/nightmares)

Before Ricky met C.C. Tinsley, he still struggled with having intense dreams. His dreams had always been shockingly realistic ever since he was a young boy so he always thought it was normal to wake up every morning with the ability to recall the most vivid aspects of his dream. The dreams only increased in intensity when he grew up and the nightmares did as well.

Especially when he was a young child, he was particularly terrorized by nightmares so he constantly had night terrors, which probably should have worried his parents if his parents weren’t constantly sneaking out of the house in the dead of night to murder people. Eventually, the night terrors disappeared but the intensity of his nightmares continued to rise with the intensities of his dreams.

There was no specific reason that Ricky could attribute to his vivid dreams and nightmares. Maybe there was something in genes that coded for “super intense dreams and really scary nightmares” or maybe Ricky’s brain was just weird (the latter was probably true).

When Ricky was young, his intense dreams and nightmares were never too realistic; but when Ricky started getting involved in his parents’ business, it came as no surprise that the dreams were more realistic and more relevant to his life. He could still recall the nightmare he had after murdering his first victim.

Ricky had found himself in a graveyard that was empty except for a single tombstone. He had walked towards the tombstone to get a better look at what the engraving read and the moment that he realized that the name of his victim was engraved into the stone, a hand shot up out of the gravestone, splitting it perfectly in half. Ricky was frozen in place as the skeletal hands pushed up out of the ground along with an entire skeleton and when he tried to move, he could only move his head. In the dream, he glanced down at his legs and saw that he, too, was a skeleton and his dream burst into a bright white light just as the victim’s bony fingers wrapped around his skeletal ankles. Ricky woke up from the dream with the impression that he had somehow died while dreaming and was now in hell but to his disappointment, he was still stuck on Earth.

The nightmares that followed that skeleton night were often to the same effect and Ricky was getting tired of constantly waking up drained because the intensity of the nightmares seemed to drain him of energy and ironically, sleep was supposed to replenish your energy. As Ricky waded deeper into the depths of the organized crime world, the frequency of his brighter, light-hearted, and hopeful dreams decreased drastically. Nights were Ricky didn’t wake up in a cold sweat or screaming were a rarity and he was aware that this condition was probably not good for his health.

Then, C.C. Tinsley stumbled into Ricky’s life and brightened his entire world with his adorable dorkiness and innocent determination. Technically, Ricky was the one who found C.C. but C.C. didn’t need to know that. C.C. was involved in a case where Ricky’s old friend was the main suspect and as a favor, Ricky decided to kill C.C. so he could drop the case but as Ricky watched C.C. through the slotted shutters concealing part of his office, he just couldn’t bring himself to kill him.

In the warm orange glow of the lamp on C.C.’s mahogany desk illuminated C.C.’s smile as he laughed, leaning against the edge of the desk while talking on the phone. He was ridiculously tall and even from afar, Ricky could tell that he would have to stand on his tippy toes in order to press a kiss on his cheek. He was wearing a trench coat that was probably taken straight from the set of a crime show and his smile melted Ricky’s heart into a mushy, molden mess. There were brief lapses in his conversation where C.C. wrote something down on his notepad with a focused expression on his face but even then, he still somehow managed to look stunning.

Later on, when C.C. recounted the story of how he met Ricky, he always started by stating that it was absolute luck that he bumped into Ricky on his way out of the office late at night and Ricky always smiled because he knew that it wasn’t a coincidence. Ricky was so smitten that he waited for C.C. to walk out of his office and “accidentally” ran into him. C.C. was obviously flustered and embarrassed to have run into Ricky but Ricky assured him that it was fine and handed him his briefcase that he had dropped during the interaction and sneaked a note with his number and name into C.C.’s hand.

C.C. figured out what he was supposed to do with the information and later that night, he texted Ricky right before Ricky went to bed. Then, Ricky delayed sleeping for another hour because he decided to have a conversation with C.C. over text.

That night was the first night in literal years where Ricky didn’t have a dream. He simply fell asleep and woke up the next morning without waking up in the middle of the night. Ricky felt more awake than he ever had, even when he took melatonin or any drug that was meant to solve his problem of restless sleep.

Maybe that’s why Ricky took C.C. home after their first date together. Ricky never took anybody back to his place because he didn’t really want to hook up with somebody who would end up hearing him scream in his sleep. But with C.C., Ricky had a feeling that he wouldn’t wake up from nightmares. Obviously, Ricky wasn’t expecting to bring C.C. home but one thing led to another and C.C. ended up in Ricky’s bed, not that Ricky was complaining. Ricky also didn’t complain when C.C. decided to stay overnight and he definitely didn’t complain when C.C. rested one arm around Ricky’s waist when he fell asleep.

Ricky was not used to the warmth of having somebody next to him when he slept but the feeling was comforting so he decided not to fight it. When he fell asleep, he had a calming dream that he couldn’t recall and woke up with a smile on his face. He didn’t know how his dreams suddenly lost their sharp intensity but he realized that C.C. was probably the reason why he no longer feared his dreams.

With every date that Ricky had with C.C., he almost never had nightmares associated with his work. They decided to establish their relationship somewhere along those many dates but the fiery passion that sparked their love never subsided. One day, after a particularly romantic date where C.C. took Ricky to have dinner by a beautiful river, Ricky had the most wonderful dream of his life.

In his dream, Ricky woke up in a king-sized bed with C.C. next to him. He got up and got dressed into casual clothes, which he only ever wore on rare occasions when he wasn’t out on business, and as he made breakfast in the large yet organized kitchen, C.C. walked in and pressed a kiss of Ricky’s cheek before grabbing the mug of coffee that Ricky had brewed for him. The kitchen was located next to a set of sliding glass doors and Ricky could see a colorful garden with blooming flowers outside of the house.

While Ricky put bread into the toaster, he heard C.C. call out two names and footsteps came running down the stairs. Ricky scooped the scrambled eggs out of the pan and into three plates carefully and two children, a girl and a boy, ran to chairs next to the dining table with wide smiles on their faces. He placed the plates down and the children grabbed the forks without any hesitation and wolfed down the food. Ricky smiled at their food-induced joy and he felt C.C. wrap his arms around his shoulders. The dream faded as Ricky woke up with tears in his eyes because of how blissful he felt in that dream.

That dream provided hope for Ricky that one day he could have that future and prompted him to open up to C.C. about his job. Being a detective, C.C. was concerned to hear that Ricky made a living off doing shady stuff but he decided that they could keep their work lives separate while still being part of each other’s personal lives. So, C.C. and Ricky decided to move in together.

Although C.C. acted as Ricky’s dreamcatcher, in the way that he warded off intense dreams and nightmares, Ricky still occasionally had some pretty vivid dreams or nightmares that would cause him to wake up. Ricky let C.C. know so he wouldn’t be alarmed if he woke up screaming at 2 am. Surprisingly, Ricky’s first nightmare occurred two weeks after he and his boyfriend moved in together.

In his nightmare, he was forced to watch as C.C. was burned alive at stake for a crime he didn’t commit. The fire was so realistic and the flames roared louder than the pounding of his heart. The worst part was that when Ricky tried to reach through the fire to help C.C., his hand disappeared through the body as if he was a ghost. The pain on C.C.’s face was heart-wrenchingly realistic and Ricky woke up feeling like he was suffocating. During his nightmare, Ricky must have screamed because C.C. was awake and he wrapped his arms around Ricky’s shaking body.

Ricky was extremely overwhelmed by the vividness of the dream but C.C. stayed calm and helped Ricky calm down as well. Obviously, Ricky felt guilty for waking up his boyfriend just because he had a nightmare but C.C. didn’t seem bothered at all. In fact, C.C. had jokingly asked, “What was so scary about your dream? Did you dream that I became an octopus and strangled you?”

“Definitely that,” Ricky laughed as he nestled closer to C.C. and after a little bit, he drifted off to sleep in C.C.’s arms, feeling safe and sound knowing that he had somebody who would help him fight off the imaginary demons in his nightmares so he could live in his untroubled dreams.

Hi there! Annoying anon that loves rambling about the Valeska twins is here again 🤣 Let the discussion continue! 😂 Yeah, I totally get your point of writing such stories as a means of fulfilling wishes. I guess it makes sense from the writer's pov that they want to give these characters a different (better) treatment. Valid point, but still, they don't feel real to me.

(Below this is the rest of the messages, put together. Farther down, below the line, are my responses)

It's like I'm reading a story with a character that's called Jerome/Jeremiah Valeska and looks exactly like him, but it's not truly him (just like you said, at their cores they are bad guys). But it's perfectly understandable and all right that people want to give them a rest from their chaotic lives haha 😊 everybody’s got their cup of tea ☕

Damn, yes, these stories are so hard to find! I imagine that writing something of the sort and investing so much in such complex characters can be draining and daunting, so yeah I get the reason why there are not so many fics out there... and OCs are so difficult to write haha you are right. They take too much time and effort 🤣

Yeah, I guess Ecco was not the best example. It's very true what you say about Jeremiah's and Ecco's relationship. In the show it was portrayed as a professional one. So we don't really know if there's anything else beyond that, save for some level of concern. So I guess I should have gone with Bruce instead because, just like you said, Jeremiah went totally bonkers when he realized that Bruce was the only one who saw past his resemblance to Jerome.

Basically, what I was trying to say is that in these fics there's not really that same vibe of evil obsession and lunacy from the twin's side. Maybe just some sort of heightened jealousy when their partner is addressed by other characters, but not in a really "Valeska" way. In fact, it is also strange when Bruce is completely absent in these stories when the twins' obsession revolves around him.

Yeah, there is sooo much to explore, so that is why I am very curious to see how people construe their backgrounds, but usually it's just the repetition of the show with some added scenes and dialogues here and there 😅 I would love to see something a bit different, but well, I guess I am being very demanding 🤣 Don't worry about it and thanks so much for replying! 😘 I am now doing some research in different sites 🤣

It's a bit weird because even though I enjoyed the show, I have to say I merely watched it to see ma broski boys in action 🤣 so If I wasn't so lazy (and didn't have other unfinished projects) I would try to write something (my mind is already full of vague ideas OMGGG 😏🤔😂), but I don't really know much about other characters or subplots, so I would not be sure how to tackle it 🤔 Thanks again for the lovely discussion! 😊

Hi anon! Don’t you worry about your rambles, they’re not at all annoying! I find it rather fun to discuss the twins.

I’m sorry you’ve not been able to find the content you’re looking for; usually, I always run into comments on Tumblr or Pinterest about how you look for certain fics and when you can’t find them, then it’s time to try a hand at writing it yourself. I’ve done that and, even though I enjoy writing, it’s still pretty hard, especially to find a drive to do it when I really am not feeling it. With the twins not feeling real, I understand, ‘course I now think I’m at the point where I might read anything if I’m gifted with more content lol (though there are some tags that, if I see them, I don’t touch if I can help it).

I think, usually, with most writers, it’s easier to take a character like Jerome/Jeremiah and, instead of doing the tremendous work that comes with trying (emphasis trying) to change them, they do a few things and that’s enough for a road to recovery. Because, most of the time, they’re not writing to change the character, or even to make it realistic; sometimes they’re just writing, or they wanted to try a different aspect. There can be so many reasons and sometimes digging deep and getting a character 100% correct isn’t at the top of the list of what you want in that story. Personally, I’ve learned to broaden my sense of disbelief with characters and just enjoy what I manage to find, especially since the Gotham fic-oriented content is sooooo small 😢

After reading your last message, I actually went onto Ao3 and searched ‘character studies’ under the characters and yeah, there’s not much, I read a few and I honestly wasn’t sure what to think (not to call anyone out). It reminded me a lot of my years reading batjokes on fanfiction or, again, Ao3 where, if you search long enough, there’s a fic for almost all your needs. There have been some good gems in there that delve into character studies and helping these characters try and become better. Comparing that to Gotham’s arrangement of fics is sad, to say the least, but batjokes in all media have a lottttt of years to have such a collection of wonderful content. (Even if you’re only a Gotham fan, stretching out into the actual Batman fandom can be very rewarding, even if your next step is into the Nolan movies or even Batman in general cause you can replace the characters in your head if you really want too) I think one big problem with Oc’s is that, in a way, they’re easy to make, but in the worst way. You can create a character to put in the place you want, a blank space and they’re just nothing. This comes up a lot in anime type works, where the main character is so blah for the purpose of the audience (reader in our other case) to put themselves in the place of the main character. This also happens in a lot of movies as well, instead of fleshing the character out and allowing them to move and breathe the way THEY would and not how the audience thinks they themselves would. Because of this, oc’s can be very flat. There are the exception, of course although I have no examples since I don’t remember the last Oc story I read . . . *wracks brain* yeah no idea. Though I’m sure it’s somewhere in my saves.

Even if one doesn’t ship Jeremiah with Bruce, it’s very difficult to ignore/brush under the rug that there was definitely an obsession and that originally, during their weeks of spending time together, building the generator, there started a friendship. The first is very obvious, show-wise (and friendship kinda came with the territory) and the gay subtext can be there if you look at it that way. As much as an interesting character Ecco is, she’s both not important enough in the show (sorry Ecco lovers) or to Jeremiah or to anyone for that matter. While with Bruce and Jeremiah, with how their first meeting go’s and all the meetings that follow after (very willingly on Jeremiah’s part even though I’m sure before this NO ONE was allowed in the inner parts of his bunker for long periods. Probably not even Ecco) the relationship is much more pronounced than anything we’re given prior. I like to think that even though Bruce was manipulating Jeremiah when they first met, he actually did see him as his own person. Even though he, like Jim and Harvey, have personally bore witness to Jerome’s tyranny. (And that only twists the knife harder when Jeremiah eventually loses his mind because both him and Jeremiah saw him as his own person and in a way Jeremiah doesn’t become like Jerome, he becomes worse)

One could argue that since we didn’t see a ‘true’ way the Valeska’s love that any type of them showing affection might never seem very Valeska. Unless one looks at their reactions and interactions with Bruce as something more than just ‘wanting to kill him’ or ‘obsession’. This would be another reason I’m don’t read much in the oc-area or out of the romantic’s lol mainly because the moment they take Bruce out of the picture, everything seems off. Jerome, while willing to divide his attention, only does it with specific people, who are: Jim, Bruce, Jeremiah, and, on occasion, Oswald (though he’s much less in comparison to the ‘big three’). Other then them, we don’t see him hyper-focus on anyone else in the show, and if he does, it’s for a second and to simply kill them after. If these three aren’t integral to his behavior and actions then things feel flat and out-right ignoring his obsession with Bruce and his inner darkness can be unrealistic. With Jeremiah, this is much worse because in canon, once No Man’s Land starts, all he can think about is Bruce. Everything he does in that setting and before this even started was for Bruce. This type of obsession is . . . well, something that can’t simply be ignored, it’s a big part of his character and also very integral to just who he is after the spray. It may not be as bad at the start of the spray (because he’s too busy rebuilding Gotham in his image) but literally second to that desire is his connection with Bruce. If there were a summary of Jeremiah as a character it would be IMPOSSIBLE to write it without Bruce (same with Jerome though his might be a footnote, depending). So him suddenly focusing on someone else is . . . odd (even with Jim he doesn’t give his full attention too and, in the finale, Jeremiah only starts moving around and doing shit when he realizes that Bruce has come home early and that it’s time to finally come back to the spotlight). Especially since he’s supposed to be the ‘Joker’ in the Gotham world, which, technically speaking, means this obsession with the Bat (a.k.a Bruce) will only ever get worse from here (not to mention the fact he knows Batman is Bruce because he remembers the prophecy Ra’s told him, which we’re shown in the finale when he first sees the Bat and comment’s ‘you’ in a knowing way; this can be argued he’s just recognizing that this is what the prophecy was talking about or that it’s Bruce but personally I think both cause the prophecy was about both of them.).

It’s hard not to repeat things in canon though, believe me, I know and if you ever try writing a time travel story, it’s much worse cause then you have to change literally everything if you’re doing it that way. Nah, you know what you like; the only problem with that is it’ll be hard to find it most of the time. I wish you luck in searching! Hopefully, you’ll find something.

Same. My older brother introduced me to the show and his way of doing so was first telling me it was a batman show, that I would LOVE Oswald’s aesthetic and that there was a Joker-type character just introduced. I was sold lol. There’s been a lot of drama with the show though, concerning the twins and I honestly wish they’d just stuck with Jerome or if they did still use Jeremiah that he wasn't just . . . a backup plan for killing Jerome off. And, if they’d been allowed to go on for a few more seasons, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they would have also killed Jeremiah and a third (never heard of) Valeska twin (triplet) would show up, playing into the overall Joker lore about there having been three. 😒🤨😑 Which I find humorous because they did so well with Jerome, he was a well-rounded, fleshed out character and, as much as I love Jeremiah, it’s hard not to consider what we could have gotten if Jerome had lived *wistful sigh* I won’t lie that the drama hasn’t affected how I watch it too these days, or at least left me with a lasting impression. I was very invested in the first few seasons, it was a good show, minus the plot-holes and annoying characters (yes, some annoy me and there are some I can’t stand) but when the twins were on screen, it was probably the show at its best. If they had implicated them more so into the main story I probably would have watched all the way to the end (I can admit, I’ve never seen season five, but I saw many clips, have been completely spoiled and DID watch the finale lol and . . . I think I saw some of season four? Maybe, not sure anymore.) because when they’re also interacting with Bruce, perfection. I could watch that shit for days.

Also, if you did write it, it wouldn’t have to be about other characters if you don’t want it to be. You’re talking to me, who has never seen the last few seasons and when I wrote my first fic ‘Blindly Evident’ literally all my scenes I had to LOOK UP because I only knew the base of what the scene was even about lol. So sometimes, you can totally bullshit your way lol and somehow it turns out to be really good and you like it. Or it’s just snippets of small scenes with your characters (I’ve been writing a fic like that for awhile because it’s fun and easy and yet you can make it so thought provoking because these snippets are so smallll.) I would implore you to give it a go. Even if you have no idea what the other characters are doing or even what their names are.

I feel like this has just become me rambling about Gotham and writing tips at this point lol but you’re welcome~ I am here to try and help and always willing to listen about Gotham and talk (or rant, I’m not picky lol). BEING ‘SINGLE SINGLE’ - LESSONS LEARNED FROM FOCUSING ON MYSELF

Well, hey there. It’s been a while.

As I’m sure you all will appreciate and understand, March was an extremely hot mess in many ways, but mainly due to how COVID-19 showed up and started ruining everyone’s lives, and my motivation to write has been very limited due to stress and anxiety over how the situation is unfolding (please stay safe and at home!). However, I have finally somewhat adjusted to the situation and started to feel kind of normal again, so… I’m back like I never left. We love to see it.

I should point out that this post has been on my mind since, like, late December, and I started writing it in the middle of February after I finished the Confidence Chronicles. As the effects of Miss Rona started to become even more prominent in our everyday lives, I wanted to rewrite some of the parts so it would become more relevant to what is currently going on before publishing it… so without further ado, let’s get into it.

If you’re in my age group, I’m sure you will understand and agree that there are different ‘categories’ of being single, and all these levels are immensely different if you get political and look at the specific details of them. For the purpose of clarity and to illustrate, I (personally) would dub these categories as such:

*Single and MiNgLiNg: You’re not tied down to anyone. You’re talking to, seeing and doing whatever you want, with whoever you want, whenever you want. You’re living your best, unbothered life. Feelings are/have become an alien concept to you. I respect it. Gwarn with your bad self.

*Single (but not really): You’re technically single, but there’s someone (or someones, if you’re so inclined) that you’re into and that you’re secretly hoping things will work out with so that you can leave this ghetto that we call the gAmE. I’d say that this is the category where most situationships reside in, before eventually dying out or graduating to an actual relationship. I hate this category, because it is literally the worst: everyone has different opinions on what can and can’t run, and from what I’ve seen it usually just ends up in someone getting hurt.

*Single-ish: kind of like the previous category, but the main difference is that although there might be someone you want things to work out with, you’re grudgingly talking to other people as well in case things go sour. Either to protect your own feelings or out of sheer boredom because the person you want isn’t stepping up in the way you want them to. You probably even try to convince yourself that these other people are better options than the one(s) you actually want, but deep down you know you’re lying to yourself. Sigh. A mess.

And finally, the namesake of this post:

*Single single (aka ‘Single and not looking’): You’ve completely distanced yourself from trying to get to know someone, for whatever reason. You have no interest in changing this anytime soon. Your phone is drier than your hands during this epidemic (cream your hands after washing them… please).

Up until very recently, I have considered myself single single. This came to pass after things not working out with the person that I wanted, after floating between the single (but not really) and single-ish categories for what felt like eons. I’m not even going to lie, it hurt - but I’m glad it happened. If it hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have been able to write this post and share what I’ve learnt from taking a step back and choosing to focus on myself, and I definitely wouldn’t have elevated to this completely new level of confidence the way I have.

The choice to cut all romantic/physical ties off for a while came when I was overanalysing the situation for the trillionth time. I realised that ever since the age of 16, I have always been involved with someone in some way - whether it’s literally just talking or something more. That’s literally almost a decade of my life that I’ve let boys/men live rent-free in my head… Ew. I know, very embarrassing. As if that embarrassment isn’t enough, I soon realised that there must be a correlation between how low my self-esteem, self-confidence and perception of self-worth used to be and the men I’ve had to deal with in my short life so far. I recognised that the craving for male attention and validation that I thought I had eliminated was, in reality, still very much intact after things ended with the person I wanted. I almost got angry at myself for feeling so empty and worthless after it ended, because I genuinely thought that I was stronger than this.

It’s all good, though - these past few months that have been spent realigning my focus in life, my personal goals and my own dreams have been so crucial to my growth as an independent woman that doesn’t need a man to feel whole. I had already come very far in this inner work (as you will tell from my previous posts), but having this time being completely alone definitely reinforced the things I already knew, but was struggling to apply to my life. I have learnt so many invaluable things about myself and what I want in a relationship in general, so let's get it.

1. I will - shock horror - not die if I don’t get attention.

This is definitely the first realisation I had after my initial decision to not talk to men anymore. As childish as it sounds, I didn’t realise how weird it would be to go from constantly being gassed by someone whose opinion I cared about a little too much… to literal radio silence.

This is how I know that this decision came at the right time of my life, because I genuinely don’t think I would’ve been able to cope without constant attention and validation a few years ago. Honestly, I was like Tinkerbell - on the verge of perishing every time I didn’t get the energy I believed (and still believe!) I deserved when I was looking nice. It’s very embarrassing and almost comical how much it used to ruin my day if I didn’t get some kind of comment about how pRetTy I am, and I’m so grateful to myself that I got out of that mindset before committing to being alone. If you’ve read my post about how to have a healthy relationship (if not, find it here), you might remember that I talked about how freeing myself from the perception that attention, affection and validation from men being something needed to survive in this life was one of the best realisations I’ve ever had. This is still entirely true, and not being involved with anyone has even made me even more of an advocate for this.

I feel like I’ve discussed the importance of building your confidence to death during my confidence series, so I’m not going to delve too deep into it here. But if you haven’t read those posts, the most important takeaway is that confidence and a deep belief in your own sauce comes from within, and gradually breaking down your insecurities with positivity, a willingness to think about/confront your demons, taking the time to get to know yourself properly, and giving yourself the love and accolades you know you deserve. At no point whatsoever did I mention the approval of men (or whoever you’re attracted to). With this in mind, I can definitely say that this deep love and appreciation I’ve been feeling for myself lately has 100% stemmed from me truly believing in it, as opposed to partially based in forcing myself to believe it and partially based in expecting validation from whoever I’m dealing with.

Furthermore, I’ve officially gotten to the point where the compliments I give myself have started to slap harder than compliments/attention from men, and it’s made me feel extremely empowered and like I have a newfound appreciation for myself. They mean more for the following reasons:

* They’re largely focused on aspects of my personality, mindset, abilities and intelligence - as opposed to just empty comments on my physical features/body.

*The only ulterior motive I have with giving myself compliments is to improve my mental health and confidence, since I don’t need to get into my own good books first to off my own pant.

Whew. All tea/shade/offence intended!

All jokes aside - regardless of if you’re in a relationship, talking to someone or happily single, I’d definitely recommend asking yourself if you’d still feel the same way about yourself if you didn’t get attention or validation on a regular basis. If the answer is no, then I’d definitely recommend asking yourself why that is (and reading/rereading my Confidence Chronicles series).

2. I’m really productive when I don’t have any distractions.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve missed smiling and giggling at my phone like a smiling and giggling idiot. I’ve also missed communicating solely with dark memes, as this is one of my love languages. For those reasons, not talking to anyone kind of sucked at times.

However, much like cutting junk food out of your diet - it gets easier the longer you stick to it, and after some time you’ll realise that you’re probably better off without it. Honestly. The amount of time I’ve freed up from not constantly being on my phone to have pointless giggly conversations about absolutely nothing is actually insane, and before Corona came into the picture, I was extremely productive (not to say that I’m no longer productive… but I may or may not have been doing 48h Netflix binges every few days now that everything is closed).

I’ve spent more time brainstorming blog ideas. My art has drastically improved. I’ve started to lose the depression weight I put on. My skin has cleared up. I’m currently learning eight new languages. I’m writing a whole BOOK. I’ve taken time to update my career plan. And last but not least - I’ve spent a lot of time healing and looking to the future as opposed to dwelling on the past and things that I am unable to change.

Having time to myself - especially while being in a better frame of mind than other times I’ve found myself alone - has reinforced the knowledge of how much I can accomplish and how good I can feel about myself outside of a relationship. This isn’t news to me, at all. But if I had realised how much of a difference being completely solo dolo would have to my productivity and motivation, I definitely would’ve chosen to cut everyone off ages ago… however, the timing in this case has been impeccable. Committing to be alone after going through over a year of inner work and self-healing has allowed me to both appreciate the confidence and resilience I’ve been rebuilding on a completely new level, as well as be able to take a step back and fully enjoy the peacefulness of not having to constantly have someone to worry/overthink about outside of myself and my own goals/projects.

3. I’m a really f*cking cool person to hang out with.

This realisation came long before I decided to not talk to men, to be honest. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been an ambivert - meaning that as much as I love spending time with friends, I highly value my alone time as well. Regardless of if I’m just Netflixing, writing, drawing or imagining fake scenarios in my head that will never happen (unless, of course, my book becomes a bestseller and I end up on Ellen), I always have a fantastic time being alone. It’s my time to recharge, dissect my thoughts and feelings, and not have to deal with anyone else for a bit.

When I first decided to be completely single, one of my main goals was to commit to being comfortable alone regardless of the situation. I’ve always been comfortable taking myself to see a movie or on a nice café date, but I really wanted to push myself to the next level of iNdEpEnDeNcE. I went to a couple gigs and a couple tourist attractions alone earlier this year when no one could/wanted to go, and I had the best time ever. Honestly, I was living the dream. Those experiences made me start planning the cute little solo holidays I was going to go on and restaurants I wanted to take myself to, and I was getting really excited. But then, of course, Corona came and ruined everything, so my plans have been put on hold indefinitely.

With that being said, I’d be lying if I said I don’t miss going out for cute little dates with someone I’m seeing/in a relationship with. Some of my favourite memories are gigs, day trips and holidays with someone else. But I think once I chose to ignore the social norms in place that dub doing things alone as “weird” - and overcome feeling “weird” as I’ve done things alone - I’ve definitely felt more excited to schedule in quality time with myself. I personally can’t wait for this Rona nonsense to be over so I can resume planning my art/architecture trip.

“But Liv! How did you overcome the feelings of awkwardness and weirdness when you went out? How did you overcome the anxiety that people were looking at/judging you?”

Excellent question. The answer is hard drugs and loads of alcohol.

I’m kidding. I don’t think the anxiety ever fully goes away, since we’ve been so hardwired to see people without a group as an outcast or even a threat. But at some point I just decided to focus on enjoying myself, as opposed to worrying about what the people I’d never see again around me felt.

(Also… alcohol definitely helps. Drink responsibly, kids.)

4. Apparently I have a massive saviour complex?

I think most people that have known me for a long time or at least taken the time to get to know me properly would agree that I am a huge empath. I have always been highly perceptive of other peoples’ feelings, emotions and moods, and I am instinctively inclined to ensure that people feel seen and heard after speaking with me about whatever they needed to vent/get advice about. This, because I’m obviously a huge advocate of normalising talking about mental health struggles, and because I genuinely enjoy sensing that they feel better after confiding in me.

Now, I wouldn’t necessarily say that being an empath is a bad thing - in fact, these traits are some of the things I like the most about myself. But taking a step back from any kind of relationship/situationship has made me suddenly and painfully aware that my high levels of empathy may not be based in a fundamental kindness as I initially thought. In fact, part of it - and I have no idea how large this part is - may be due to a severe saviour complex, and therefore based in an inherent selfishness.

Yes, I know it’s confusing. Me too, I’m confused. Hear me out.

Sometimes I get so carried away while writing about all the ways that I’ve healed and bettered myself after my previous relationship… so much that I forget I had issues I was going to counselling for before he ruined everything and the sessions became all about getting over him. I genuinely forget sometimes that I had a life before I even knew he even existed, which just goes to show how large of an impact it had on me. Very sad, I know.

The stuff I was going to counselling for at the time had me in a very dark place, and looking back at it the breakup was kind of a blessing in disguise for my brain. I definitely think that refocusing my energy to heal from the relationship protected me from having to face certain aspects of myself that I wasn’t ready to deal with at the time.

Fast forward to a couple years later - I consider myself fully healed from the situation. I’ve learnt so much about myself, my mental health, relationships and love in general, and for a good year or so I was meeting new people and starting to think about a potential new relationship. I met some great people (and a couple nutcases) that things didn’t end up working out with, but I didn’t really mind that things weren’t going perfectly because I had hEaLeD™, and I had proved to myself that I could move on… so sh*t was sweet for a while.

However, when I decided to go on this dating hiatus, something I didn’t expect at all happened:

The issues, thoughts and feelings I was initially going to counselling for - before the breakup - started to come back to my attention. And this time, there was nowhere to run and nothing/nobody to distract me.

At this point in time, being forced to face these issues genuinely doesn’t feel as hard as it used to, as I have grown and matured a lot since when I first started feeling these things at around 14/15. I can think about things without it ruining the rest of my day, and I can put words to the feelings I struggled so much to verbalise back then. But regardless of how much easier it is now, it’s still f*cking hard - and this is what brings me back to my point about having a saviour complex.

The term “saviour complex” implies a deep rooted need to save/help people by fixing their problems - often at the expense of their own needs and feelings. Some would even go as far as saying that these “saviours” go out of their way to help others so they don’t have to deal with their own thoughts and feelings, and the more I think about it the more painfully obvious it is that perhaps my inclination to help people - and especially those that I’ve been involved with in some way - comes from a place of selfishness and an immense desire to not have to think about my own troubles.

This has definitely been a scary epiphany for me, and old habits have made me focus on the negative side of constantly trying to help and empathise with people. It’s made me question my entire character, in the sense that the traits that I’ve admired the most about myself might just be a defence mechanism so I don’t have to deal with my own sh*t. However, on the other hand, I’ve been spending a lot of energy reminding myself that regardless of what the truth is - if I ever figure it out - I’ve still been able to help people that have needed someone to be there for them, so does it even really matter what the reasons are at the end of the day? Probably not. I really need to keep working on getting out of my own head sometimes.

With that being said, being alone - whether it’s being single or temporarily for this lockdown - really forces you to face yourself and accept that maybe you don’t have everything as together as you thought, and that’s okay. As long as you acknowledge/fully feel your thoughts and feelings instead of dismissing them out of discomfort, the outcome can only be emotional growth and maturity.

5. My next relationship is going to be phenomenal.

Arguably to my disadvantage, and despite experiencing how peaceful and stress-free being completely single is… I still want love in my life, as long as it is on the right terms and healthy for both of us. I guess I’m just a hopeless romantic like that, at the end of the day… or a sick masochist.

I say this, but I know that all this work I’ve put into rebuilding and elevating myself will - when the time is right - bring someone amazing into my life, that will fully love my confidence, my imperfections and everything else about me that makes me, me. I have so much faith in this that for now, I’m really just chilling and going about my life and my own goals, as well as trusting the process. I feel no stress or anxiety about it anymore whatsoever, and I never thought I’d ever get to this point of calmness. It really is a great feeling to know that the next person lucky enough to be in a relationship with me is going to be nothing short of an additional blessing in my life (and I to theirs), because I am now no longer willing to compromise on or overlook toxic/unhealthy/bad vibes in whoever I end up with. For this reason, I would once again like to reiterate how grateful I am to myself for realising that this time alone was something I needed (and actually sticking to it) - it really has made me feel invincible.

The beautiful thing about all of these realisations is that you don’t even have to be as drastic as me (in terms of cutting the person/the people you’re talking to off) to get into a better headspace when it comes to relationships. If you’re lucky enough to be in a relationship with/dealing with someone that respects, loves and encourages your individuality, allocating quality time to spend with yourself shouldn’t even need to be justified. Obviously, a lot of relationships don’t really have a choice besides giving each other space during this lockdown, but even so I don’t think that time apart should be seen as a strain or a risk to the relationship. I feel so strongly about this that I’ve realised that I can’t even be with someone who doesn’t understand the importance of being our own, separate people who choose to form a team, as opposed to two incomplete individuals who are reliant on each other to feel whole.

With that being said, my biggest realisation and takeaway from this time alone is this:

My next relationship will not “complete” me; it will simply compliment my already existing wholeness.

Read that again.

Now - I know we’re all sick and tired of being cooped up in our houses. But we literally have all the time in the world to spend quality time with ourselves, so why not do so? Now is the perfect time for reflection, g-checking yourself, positive affirmations and self-love. I promise that you’ll come out of this lockdown feeling so much better about yourself.

Education is sexy.

Disclaimer: Sex Education 2 spoilers ahead!!!

I have just finished watching the second season of Sex Education. The second season started with how most people normally perceive sex education, just like how the first season went. Significantly, the second season continued to tackle issues beyond the dictionary and social definitions of sex education. It tackled how self-discovery is a prerequisite of having important and meaningful connections to others. I liked how they focused on much more complex dilemmas of the individual self and the social self. Here are some thoughts (and spoilers) why the series is so important and why is it also important for us to have an actual and functional sex education curriculum at schools:

1. It talks about stigmas on sexually transmitted infections. Although this is a surface content of sex education curriculums, we cannot deny the vitality in understanding the concept of sex. The series started with a ‘chlamydia hysteria’ outbreak at the school which was caused by the belief that chlamydia is an airborne infection (which is technically not). I just wished this series made an effort to discuss HIV because it is the chronic and life-changing condition that sexually active people may encounter. Also, by discussing these issues, we can remove stigmas that not all people living with sexually transmitted diseases deserve a place in hell for being too nasty.

2. It talks about the importance of building and opening up on sexual relationships. This series may really raise an eyebrow on older people, but I really find it essential for people in their teenage years to discover their individual selves with the help of sex education. It shows how we discover our earthly desires, usually through masturbation while watching porn or seeing sexy bodies from a common household product (just like how Otis discovered the pleasure of doing it to his self at 16, kinda late though). I just thought that this series should have been more careful with dealing with sexual partnerships among minors, but I know it’s now on the broader concept of cultural and generational understanding of sexual partnerships. Even if the series is filmed and based on modern English culture, the series happens in the realities of the Filipino youth. For some, sex is a sacred act which people should only do with their husbands or wives. For others, sex is just a physiological need which people should not be ashamed of doing. Regardless of our point of view in the sanctity and need of sex, in the context of sex among minors, we should discourage the young people to engage in such activities. There are a lot of reasons why. These include lack of proper mindset, and inability to handle much bigger responsibilities such as teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, etc.

On opening up on sexual relationships, it is about mutual satisfactions. It is not limited to mutual orgasms as we are talking about sex, but let us admit it, sex has a big role in establishing relationships, even platonic ones. Mutual satisfaction is more of emotional safety and assurance among relationships. It has been multiple weeks since I actually received the request, so my sincere apologies for this delay. Although the following is no way to excuse myself, I hope to clarify the delay is because I have been quite busy and not neglecting the request. For other news, if I am on track I hope to equally post another review request that also involves BTS. Afterwards, I plan to wrap up the shorter month of February with TWICE’s “Knock Knock”—a song that I am finding as my current favorite song of all-time and one that is excellently efficient and accommodating in its composition for TWICE’s weaker vocals. But we will save that discussion for when it is appropriate.

To address this current review’s link, I am using an unofficial YouTube upload. For basically what this means, for future readers reading this three years from now—which, now thinking of such, is definitely a bizarre yet intriguing thought—the link might no longer work because of copyright issues or because the uploader removed her/his video. As such, should this be the case—whether three years from now or somehow in a few months—then manually searching for the song will have to be done.

The song itself is not necessarily the strongest I have heard nor is its structural composition any better. However, in terms of its lyrics and its flow, both of these aspects are definitely unique compared to many other pop songs—and with the lyrics specifically, it scores incredibly well. Analysis: To begin this review, we first need to understand the song’s current strengths. After all, it scores at a six which is quite decent despite my harsher, critical remarks that “Dead Leaves” is supposedly a plain and forgetful song.

As discussed earlier, the song’s uniqueness does help its ratings—and more specifically, that uniqueness exists in the lyrics of which I consider an appropriate category for a song to be judged in. For why the lyrics score incredibly well—and readers should realize an eight for lyrics is incredibly rare and only two other songs on this blog have earned such—the details are phenomenal. Even if the plot itself is nothing too spectacular as it is a romantic-related (or more accurately, a not-so-romantic one as it involves a breakup) topic and thus, is far from unique, the details truly make the song become a miniature story.

For example, with the first rap, we come into details that are not repeated or are cliché as oftentimes is the case with pop music. Unlike lyrics that follow extreme simplicity such as “Our love is going away / My heart hurts every day” (I made up these lines; if I end up quoting an actual song, it is by pure coincidence), the first rap instead brings out an entirely fleshed scenario and description of the protagonist’s feelings. This occurs at other moments in the song, and even the choruses are still building off the main story versus spewing lines that are not specifically rooted in an individual, creative plot. This incredible level of details in the lyrics is why I have given it an eight. It is like a story; and for me to be able to claim such—even if, yes, the story itself is not necessarily amazing in of itself—the very fact that it comes off as one versus “regular, generic pop lyrics” is praiseworthy.

Another aspect that is the song’s strength—though it is one that is not quite scored and thus unable to directly aid the song’s rating—is that the style involved is different from many other pop songs. Although many might disagree, I believe it is still important for songs—especially in pop as there are a plethora of songs existing—to have a distinguishing, creative style that is heard in either aurally or structurally (or even both). In “Dead Leaves,” what makes its style unique is how it flows: the song focuses on slower build up that, once it reaches its climax (the choruses—as is oftentimes the case), the release from there is orientated towards slower, wave-like progression versus the expected and typical style of merely streaming out the climax.

Let us use some examples since what I am discussing is incredibly abstract. In BTS’ “I Need U,” we find that the chorus flows out rather fluently and directly: the chorus occurs and it simply continues off the song. In fact, it is hardly thought that a song’s climactic piece would run anything but as a fluent stream. However, in “Dead Leaves,” this is not the case as the choruses is frequently chunked up and therefore carries subtle pauses, and furthermore the choruses are quite lengthy and dragged on versus occurring in a somewhat hastier fashion so that the song can easily “reset” back to its build up form. (And for another random note, pop songs run in what is called a “binary” form because of this very reason; there is oftentimes a “cycle” of going from “A” to “B” and back to “A” and the cycle begins again—and hence “binary” as there are two main portions. But this is getting far too technical and further abstract and is definitely not a part of the discussion for “Dead Leaves.”)

Returning to the main reason for all this lengthy explanation, I mention this all to explain that the song very much sounds unique. Seldom do pop songs follow this type of flow and, with the “binary” form of pop music (which I attempted to explain), it is definitely interesting to hear “Dead Leaves” have its own style to the binary format.

All that said, while creativity is welcomed and is arguably necessary for a group/soloist to survive—and by “survive” I merely mean “stay relevant” because I love being dramatic—in the K-Pop scene, this does not mean a song is automatically good. In other words, just because a song sounds different does not mean it is therefore a strong song; this will ultimately be the driving idea behind this current review. If a listener hears a very different song and then uses that as her claim for why the song is good, it is an incredibly weak argument. Equally said, it is also a weak argument to critique a song for “sounding generic” on the sole basis of that. For example, in the past I have claimed some songs sounded awfully generic and typical, but I then (or at least I hope) went on to explain why it sounds generic and why sounding generic in that song’s particular case is bad. If nothing else is gleaned from this review, I do hope readers understand these crucial points: never discuss and critique music quality purely on sounding “different” or “similar” to other songs. Instead—as I will do with TWICE’s “Knock Knock,” a very generic pop song—it is about looking at the composition and production involved and then deciding whether a song is good or not (and of which there is no right answer as music is all subjective).

With all that in mind, let us now discuss what I do find weak in “Dead Leaves.” To save time and to not bore readers with robotically breaking down each aspect to the song, I wish to instead hone in on one section: the choruses. As much as I admire the creativity involved in general but more specifically the choruses, I find that the composition sacrificed efficiency and even quality just for “Dead Leaves” to be deemed “creative” or “unique” within the context of its chorus and overall flow. What remains most troubling is how excessively dragged the choruses sound. For example, as already partially discussed above, the choruses do not just run through and carry on the song; rather, the choruses contain frequent pauses and, to describe its flow, it is akin to waves: pushing out hard, receding a little, and then pushing out hard once again and repeating this.

Now, this composition decision is not just for the sake of creativity and I do wish to clarify that. A musical benefit that comes from this approach is that the vocals are granted additional chances to showcase minimal beltings—this being a pleasing aspect to BTS’ vocals in this song. Nonetheless, this main benefit is still questionable: doing such comes at the expense at making the vocals and instrumental sound “stretched.” To explain what I mean, the choruses’ ending time should be much shorter than they currently are. Again, I do wish to highlight and praise the creativeness involved and for the risk taken with the song’s composition, but with being a critical, active listener I cannot help but bring up the song’s significant flaws.
