Day 9: Scars — Passing smile — Baking cookies

summary: scars tell a story, and Rosalie Goldsworth remembers one.

As long as Rose could remember, there has always been a scar on her father, most notably she would recognize him just by the scar that was across his cheek alone. If she were lost in a crowd and the only man she saw was that exact cheek scar in a sea of unfamiliar faces, there alone she’d recognize Ricky. There had been scars on his arms as well, when he rolled up his sleeves Rosalie would notice the jagged scar on his forearm from a fight, it was painful to look at. And there had been ones on his hands as well, though they were only from kitchen accidents whenever he was cooking. He had accidentally cut himself once from trying to make chorizo for breakfast one morning, and one small scar on the back of his neck from when he was really young and fell trying to help his brother (twice had he helped his brother that resulted in scars).

 She was only six years old when her father got that scar on his forearm, it was late at night and Rose had gone downstairs when she heard the door slam open and a mixture of panicked voices were heard. Rose peeked her head over the kitchen, her father standing over dim light as he hunched over the table. It had been the first time she saw him tremble, stepping closer is when she saw it. His forearm displayed on the hardwood surface, blood seeping as the deep gash that almost ran across his forearm. Ricky must’ve heard her scream, because he stared at her with an expression she hadn’t seen before, pure terror. 

 Rose couldn’t remember what else happened that night, Ricky with a paper towel over his arm as he tried to reassure her that he had been okay, that it was only an accident at his job, that it was just a little scuffle at the diner club, but Rose only stood and stared at the bloodstained towel over his arm, that image burned into her memory for years to come as her uncle had taken her to bed in a hurry. It had taken her a while to sleep, she had only ever been thinking about her father and the gash on his forearm.

 The next morning, everything continued as usual. Her father barely spoke a word when she woke up, only setting her plate down and kissing the top of her head before retreating back to the kitchen. They ate together in that uncomfortable silence, Rose never prying her eyes away from his stained bandaged arm resting on the table as he drank his morning coffee. Like the rest of the countless scars her father had, it healed, faded but you could still see the jagged line. Since then, Rose still thought about it, from time to time her eyes would dart to his forearm just to see the scar, it’d been less wincing to see though sometimes she thought about asking about it when she got older.

 Though her father was a secretive man, it felt as though people knew more about him than she ever did. 

 And maybe that had been for the best.

Okay so..... It may have been a few months...... But I am now so close to finishing this bookbinding project of @mothman-noises amazing bfucu fanfic!

I hit a couple roadblocks when I was trying to make the text block a few months ago, and this one is actually the third one I printed. I kept having trouble when I tried to manually trim the pages, which is understandable all things considered.

What changed? Well, I moved states, and now I live close by a library that has bookbinding machines I am free to use (after signing a waiver). So I was finally able to get a mostly clean trim of the text block, and they even had book glue for me to use when making the cover.

All I have left to do is make the tile title cards that I will glue on the front cover and the spine of the book. I didn't have time to do it today, but I was shown how to use their cool gold foil lettering machine, and made a little test on that black paper there.

This is definitely not the prettiest book, there have definitely been a lot of mistakes along the way, but as a first time making one, I think I'm doing pretty well. Plus I'm going to be starting college soon, and if all goes well, I'm going to be an art major with a bookbinding emphasis, so I'll have plenty of time to get better at this thing, lol.

Currently taking part in a Watcher fanzine that will benefit the Asian Pacific Community Fund :D you can check that out on @watchertvzine <3 Creator Applications are still open atm BUT this sideblog is only for my BFUCU stuff. Sorry for the confusion! Visually, the characters share an obvious similarity with the real-life Watcher/Buzzfeed (worth it and unsolved) personalities -because it's a good way to spark engagement since people recognize the inspiration- but I get it leads to confusion and in the end it overshadows the unique identities of the characters. Ideally, I'd love for them to be visually recognizable as the BFUCU characters, not just knock-offs of the Buzzfeed crew, that's why I don't usually post on the watcher/bfu tags. Like, I understand the appeal of those tags, but I also want these characters to stand on their own.
