Diluc eventually made a hobby to just watch you from the balcony or window of his home while drinking some beverages. He's pretty amused to watch you jump and catch butterflies or insects flying around his property, he occasionally stops you from eating them too. Much to your dissapointment

Klee is also one of your playmates, both of you adore going fish blasting or catching some interesting stuff from the forests to keep as little treasures or trinkets.

The only bad part is when you guys get caught by Jean and get put into temporary solitary confinement, but you guys past the time with drawing stuff you had capture or saw and make more plans to go adventure! Maybe even invite diona next time.

Two more people is Aether and paimon! You were pretty much just really hungry and accidentally began to nibble on paimons arm making her almost pass out thinking she was going to get eaten by you

You did eventually made up to them by cooking the two a meal which paimon happily accepted. Aether likes it whenever you're around, not just because you're basically the creator but also since you were great company to them!

While assisting them in a adventure you were able to track down multiple targets in a span of minutes just by your animal senses which impressed Aether because he won't have to go through so much trouble in bounties anymore

PSA To the Phantom, we have a Troll/Stalker!

Those who know me know this is somthing I won't typically resort to this, but today, I've reached the end of my long patience. ( one and half a year of patience) There is a Stalker/ Troll whose whole stick is trying to get people to draw Dani and Danny fan art. Thir asks will look like this. They will delete them as soon as you answer. I mod on a few Discord servers, so when I informed people on Discord that I had a digital stalker, someone reached out to me to ask me if this was them, as they didn't want to deal with what I had to put up with. That's how I got a hold of this:

On Deviantart, they try to get into people's good graces by subscribing and donating a dollar. (it's a tip you can do on DA, not required) They ask you to do art, and if you bite, They won't stop pestering you about it. Like you didn't do it fast enough, or you didn't do it. And if you do, they have a new request lined up the minute you post the last. So it's never good enough. They will try to monopolize your time, and you never get time to draw what you want to if you try being kind at first. One telltale sign that it's them is that if you reply to them, they will delete all their messages with you after your reply to avoid detection by moderators.

I've tried to block them multiple times, And I suspect DA staff have banned some of their accounts.

They don't understand no and stay away or that people have boundaries. I've reported them multiple times. They have been suspended multiple times (I was lucky enough to get this screenshot for a suspended account)

They have been bothering me since Aug 28, 2023 and the latest block for this person was today.

This is me reaching out to others in my discord communities over time for help, showing what it did to me mentally and why I no longer take art requests. (For the privacy of the other users, I've only included what needed to go in there with their usernames hidden.) The only other user by name than me is the stalker.

I lay myself bare to you phandom community so that you may not suffer silently by JacobFritzsching1 hand. I know I'm not his only target. I've stayed quiet and done what I could for a year and a half. They have not let up, and I fear they are driving good people out of the community through their behavior. I will confess to thoughts of wanting to permanently delete my stuff just to escape this stalker. But I'm not letting them win. I am a Phandom elder, I have been a phan since the show since it aired back in the day; some of you may know me by my old username Jeanette9a, some of you will know I'm sited as one of the earlier ones to keep DP ship names list that now exisits on Ao3, and I have to use my every connection and pull to see this troll/stalker not mess with more of my fellow Phandom community. N/A : There we go with an actual headcanon. It's SFW, even though there's some suggestive stuff (but we're all freaks and I'm tired of pretending we're not)

First, you can’t deny that in HSL, Nathaniel is one of the most gentle and attentive LI (behind Lysander since he’s still a bit emotionally unavailable, which is understandable when you know about his situation)

He’d pay a lot of attention to Candy’s needs, especially picking up on cues before she even needs to express it. He’s not big on big declarations but he’s totally the type to constantly asks if she’s comfortable or if she needs anything during intimate moments (sex or not, but ESPECIALLY during sex)

I mean, it’s kinda new for him and Candy so her well-being is his main priority but he also wants to make sure she’s enjoying it as much as he is. 

Which is why he doesn’t rush things (even though sometimes he might finds it hard to control himself, but he’s a disciplined guy in all aspects of his life) and there’s multiple reasons for that : he doesn’t want Candy to feel uncomfortable but he also wants to savour the warmth and closeness of their moments (never really had much of warmth in his life so who blames him ?)

Literally all for physical touch whether it’s kissing or holding hands, he doesn’t shy away from contact

And actually loves it when Candy does the same by running her fingers through his hair or tracing the lines of his face (or abs and chest if she’s feeling freaky or his arms and shoulders but he might need a bit of time to get used to it and appreciate it since… well we know that in HSL he doesn’t really like his arms).

He may shy away from having his arms or shoulders touched directly during intimate moments, but his vulnerability isn’t a due to a lack of attraction or affection (it’s more of a deep-rooted emotional wound that he hasn’t fully healed from yet)

Candy’s reassurance could help though, such as gently kissing his arms or letting herself go in his arms without drawing attention to his insecurity. It would help him feel safe, helping him let his guard down (just like she is)  in ways he hasn’t before.

He might be subtle about showing affection in school (like smiling at her across the classroom, holding her hand in the hallway, or leaving little notes for her in her locker) but in private he’s all hands. Big on cuddles or having Candy on his lap.

I’ve seen some headcanons about him being the small spoon but I feel like at that point in the story, that sounds out of character. He still believes he needs to be « strong » and wants to show Candy he’s someone she can rely on. And he was raised to be independent and cold so he HATES to be babied or anything because it makes him feel vulnerable and exposed.

During HSL, a lot of Candy and Nath’s intimate moments start with them sitting together at his flat, working on their homework or reading a book and then, it escalates. (How do you want him to focus on anything when Candy’s is right there, looking so focused and all)

He likes to take the lead, being the initiator of making out sessions as he likes to see how much she trusts him. He has a habit of pulling her close, like really close, a hand resting on her cheek while the other one wanders on her waist.

Not really the main focus of the request as I already went through that in another request, but as for Nathaniel’s kisses, I think every one writing about MCL (me included) agree that he’s the type to make it slow and sweet. He might start the kiss gently, just brushing Candy’s lips but it almost usually leads to something deeper (not like that you freaks. Well… maybe actually)

Another side of intimacy Nathaniel values is emotional intimacy. Let me explain.

Nathaniel definitely has a sapiosexual side because even though he does like some good looks, if there’s no brain to back it up, you won’t keep him interested for long (he’s an Aquarius so he needs intellectual stimulation. perhaps roleplay… WHO SAID THAT ?!)

And I know it might be a hot take considering Candy, in the game, sometimes makes the dumbest decisions but we count emotional intelligence as intelligence here. Because it is. I said so.

As I said in the beginning, he’s still a bit emotionally unavailable (nothing compared to UL but still)

But with Candy, he feels more free to open up and actually express himself. She’s proven that she’s not the type to judge or hold it against him which is new for him

Which is why sex isn’t entirely satisfying for him if there’s no emotional attachment/connection or aftercare afterward (which was probably why he was never satisfied in UL)

He’s very thoughtful about his words even though he might struggle with actually telling Candy how much she means to him. Therefore, he’s more likely to show it by listening to her rant or vent about whatever she has on her mind at that moment, trying to either cheer her up with words or simply listening without saying a word while he holds her close, arms wrapped around her.

He’s the type to sneak kisses in private or tease her (he knows how to make a suggestive comment look innocent, don’t trust his angelic face y’all) and even if she’s flustered, he enjoys seeing her blush.

Nathaniel is very respectful of Candy’s boundaries. If she’s not in the mood for physical intimacy, he’ll never push her. Instead, he’ll offer a hug or a kiss on the forehead. 

When Candy is stressed or feeling overwhelmed, Nathaniel will help her calm down with soothing words and gestures. He’ll offer her a massage if he sees her being hunched over her schoolwork for hours or if she simply looks tense.

I think it might also be good to mention that even though he himself struggles with words, he does need Candy to tell him things, to reassure him. He really enjoys when she’s telling him he’s attractive or handsome or that she’s enjoying him (especially during spicy moments, he really like when she praises him or when he can hear her and that’s a big turn on for him)

How do you draw art so good

Is there a method you use or is that just the style you've gotten over time?

I'm just gonna preface that this tutorial is from someone who was not professionally trained and didn't have a lot of free time for art, so a lot of the tips I have is short cuts I use to get the best results quickly

If you genuinely want to get better at art then please look at references and practice that is always the best

However if you are like me and only really do art for fun but want to go faster then these are for you pfppt

Overall I'd say my style is influenced by speedpaints I would watch when I was younger, I like analyzing how people do things and what makes something look "good" to me

I always recommend watching them because they will often have techniques you've never seen before or do things a certain way that you can try out yourself

I consume good art, it feeds me

but seriously it can be super helpful when developing your own methodology, or just generally trying something new

Usually it starts with me pulling some references from artists I really admire and sort of sketching out how they do the things I like

For example 8um8le has like super good anatomy and poses so I focused on trying to replicate how they do that

venemous-qwille is super good at color and pulling focus so that's what I focused on in my study of them

In general I'd say my process is sketch -> silhouette -> color -> shading -> render

I really don't like doing lineart lol

I'd say for the sketch the most important part is using references and just kind of fudging it until it looks correct anatomically/physically

General rule of thumb is spend time on areas of interest, and keep non important areas light (like the stitching on his pants)

I don't do lineart because I think its unnecessary for most paintings I do

I naturally tend to put more time and focus on areas of interest (like hands and feet) and if you use a brush with opacity for the sketch, those areas are naturally going to be darker in the final sketch

Of course this is gonna be different for everyone but it's what works for me

Sometimes I do a really really sketchy layer underneath my sketch/lineart, just so I know where everything is going

Use thumbnails! They are great to help figure out the general layout of things and what pose I wanna do

Next is what I call the "silhouette" layer

This is super important for me cause it helps me refine the figure and make sure the pose/anatomy looks correct, also depending on what color I choose for the silhouette helps guide what colors I'm going to use on top

This piece is a good example of how it works. The silhouette shows me how the figure interacts with the background, how the pose looks and if its any good

The silhouette layer doesn't have to be super clean, as long as it follows the sketch decently well and shows where the figure is then its fine

I also sometimes make the silhouette layer multiple colors to help guide shading and vibe

Next is the coloring layer. I usually make this a clipping layer on top of the silhouette layer, or I change the silhouette layer to alpha lock, either way it saves me time on coloring everything in

Sometimes I am super rough with the coloring too, using like an airbrush or my fav watercolor brush just to generically block in color where I want it

Works out cause most objects have like a bounce light to them from surrounding objects, so this is sort of a cheat I use to get that effect without all the work lol

Also don't be afraid to have the lower silhouette layer shining through, having multiple colors sort of subtly shining through the piece helps lots

Next is the shading layer, this is usually another clipping layer, usually set to "multiply"

The colors I pick here is usually within this range, any color works, just depends on the piece and vibes.

Since this piece is set in a sunset forest I choose a more desaturated orange for the shading layer

I know there's a whole thing about multiply layer being a crutch (and it kind of it) but it is a useful tool when you just want some darker values across the piece but don't want to go through the process of color picking every single darker shade

Also in my opinion it looks better than picking a darker color and setting it to a lower opacity, idk I just think the color has more "depth"

Next is the hardest to explain, sort of the vibes layer

Usually its just a layer of more concentrated color on top of the normal color and I fudge with the settings and values until I get a result I like

Next is the longest step, is the "extra" or the render stage.

Usually I add a background before this step so that if I need to merge the figure better with the background I can

If I render with a white background but he's supposed to be in a dark forest, its going to mess with the lighting severely

Also this is when I add more "vibe" layers on top to get the figure to match the background better

Backgrounds in general I recommend checking out @/derekdomnicdsouza on instagram he's got lots of great tutorials for breaking down backgrounds simply

I'd say general rule for the rendering layer is to focus on the areas of interest and spend less time on areas you don't care about

I even blur stuff out on the edges I don't want people to see, partially to save time on fixing mistakes in areas I dont care about (oop), but mainly to help draw the eye to the areas I do want people to focus on

Theoretically parts of the background should like mesh with the characters, parrallel lines are a no no unless they are directing a viewer to look somewhere, things that are perpendicular help bring things together

tbh I'm still not the best at layout and probably need more practice, but overall this is what I like doing

Overall this is what my layer set up ends up being

Sort of a sandwich with the lineart/sketch as the "meat" lol

Color and basic shading below the sketch, clean-up and rendering on top

I like this method cause it's super flexible if I ever want to try something different or try to replicate someone's style

I can make each step less or more messy depending on the end result and can add a lineart layer if need be. Also if there's a part that is straight up not working or needs to be removed its super easy to do cause I can just paint over it on the "extras" layer, color picking from the surrounding area to get the same vibe

Generally rule of thumb for my style is: get the initial layout of colors, form and shading to look good, then the rendering should be smooth sailing

Really the best advice I can give to get better at art is to enjoy what you're doing and become very very obsessed with drawing a silly little guy

The Owl House Pilot Leak!!!

            Oh my titan.

            The Owl House’s original pilot episode (basically a bunch of voiced-over storyboards) just got leaked and OMT. Watching it felt like experiencing the original magic of the show all over again… Reminding me what it was like to fall in love the first time!!! The hype and rush, the excitement to type down my thoughts after a new episode, analyzing and gushing over both big and small moments, the details!!! The pilot has reiterated all over to me again why I love these characters, from Luz's powerful earnestness, to Eda's chaotic demeanor! It’s like having the whole show open ahead of me, the possibilities endless when knowing this is just the beginning and we could go anywhere from here!

            What’s interesting is that Luz’s conflict with Camila doesn’t really exist here; In fact Camila isn’t present or mentioned at all! What brings Luz to the isles is Amity, who’s been learning in the human world, under the guise of being a human by disguising her ears! It’s alluded to that Odalia and Alador made her do it, though we don’t know why…

            But WOW that must’ve been so meta, doing S3 with Amity stuck in the human world with Luz, hiding her ears! It must’ve been a fun way to bring back the older concepts in new form! And indeed, we see a couple of stuff we’ve already gotten glimpses of, such as the storyboards of Luz offering her friendship art to Amity! I love that we get to see the actual scenario of how Amity accidentally defended Luz in the first place, since we heard that but didn’t get to see how it turned out.

            It’s interesting that Lumity is basically the inciting incident of the story, though I can see why the final version opted instead to emphasize Luz’s conflict with her mother. Especially with how she chooses to stay in the isles in the final draft, which leads to guilt over lying to her mom, having her ‘coming out’ moment that eventually occurs in Yesterday’s Lie, etc. So more agency when it comes to Luz losing her access to the human world. Plus in the pilot, there isn't the same emphasis on Luz trying to live out her dreams of being a witch, and her obsession with stories that ties back to Manny and forms the basis for a lot of other themes and arcs.

            That said, I also appreciate what this alternate take offers, and how Lumity helps tie everything together, it really is the queerness that is such a foundational part of the ‘weirdness’ theme that the show is about, and it’s intertwined with the pilot! God Luz being heartbroken when Amity dismisses the drawing… And then crying when Eda compliments it without realizing who it’s about! Or maybe she did, she could’ve recognized Luz there and figured out a way to stealthily make Luz feel better…!

            I love Luz routinely lock-picking her locker because she presumably forgot the combination! And it’s interesting that we have a setup of there being multiple dimensions that the Boiling Isles has access to, and not just the human world and Demon Realm. That plays a role in the climax, more on that later. Given we have what is basically an airport for different dimensions, I wonder if we would’ve seen Luz find her way back home much earlier on, under much less intense circumstances, in a S1A episode?

            The ‘Emperor’ is also alluded to in the pilot, which we didn’t get actual mention of until the fifth episode in the final show. He apparently dislikes humans and wants Luz brought over to him, is this still operating off of the ‘Pupa’ version of the character who claimed to speak on behalf of the true ruler, trapped in their metamorphosis by him? So maybe he wasn’t always human, or maybe this is Belos’ hypocritical way of ‘protecting’ humans by keeping them away and in blissful ignorance of the demon realm.

            We also establish Hexside much earlier! IIRC Hexside was always part of the show, but executives pushed for it to have more emphasis, which the crew continued to follow through on in S2 onwards because that had already been set up. Lilith is the principal, and I recognize the storyboards of her, including her bat transformation! We get a Tinella Nosa cameo, we see Amity, and there’s also a brief cameo of Willow too! Nice way to set her up before her proper debut.

            The ‘barrier’ containing King’s crown turns out to just be a regular human locker, which makes me wonder if the writers updated the final draft to make it a force field that only allows humans through, because of the whole Belos twist. Which makes me wonder if in this draft, Belos is Pupa, who never was human, or maybe they realized the opportunity to insert foreshadowing into a big twist regarding the main villain. Makes me wonder if the house we see Amity enter in the pilot, which is on sale, would've had any significance like in the final show. Love how Tinella Nosa is a student at Hexside, and also Dana having to occasionally insert lines for Wendie Malick and others was great.

            Lilith is a lot more openly adversarial, which is different compared to how her actual debut provides a softer side to her; I imagine this would’ve been apparent in a later episode of the ‘Pilot AU’, and her transformation has me curious; Was she originally the one with the curse, but then the writers changed it to Eda? Or did they both have a curse? Eda also has an owl form she can summon and control at Will, maybe all Clawthornes have a beast mode that’s less of a curse and more of a talent. Lilith ends up trapped in another dimension, which makes me wonder if she’d have a temporary replacement –possibly Pilot Bump- or if she’d return offscreen. We see the portal key get destroyed under much more casual circumstances, though it’s less as big of a deal for this and the established ‘dimension port’ we saw before.

            (Also, Amity recognizing Luz in the hallway… Everything to me!!!)

            Warden Wrath doesn’t exist and neither does the Conformatorium, it’s Lilith and Hexside. With her as principal and Amity as student, I wonder if we would’ve gotten more of their relationship in the pilot AU, if Covention was a way of carrying over that former connection since Amity would be a teacher’s pet in either version of the story. And speaking of ties to Covention, it’s interesting is that Eda’s chest gem seems to be linked to the Emperor’s Coven, as ‘Pilot Kikimora’ uses it to control her. Curiously, we have a scene at the end mirroring what we got with Lilith in the final draft of the show!

            I feel it implies that Eda DID join the Emperor’s Coven with Lilith, if only for a brief moment, but then defected; But the chest gem is basically the pilot version of the Emperor’s sigil, except with the explicit function of being a shock collar. I find it interesting that Eda still has the mirror to contact the EC with, instead of just getting rid of the thing. Is she a rogue agent who hasn’t totally cut ties, because she can’t? Won’t?

And the fact that Pilot Kikimora can just shock Eda at will makes me wonder if the Emperor is low-key just letting Eda roam around, which makes me wonder if he’s aware of the familial connection, is using Eda to find Luz, already knows about her doing that because of the time loop, etc. We’d of course have gotten an episode where Luz finds out about Eda’s connection and helps her deal with the gem… I realize now that Luz learning Eda also wanted to join the EC with Lilith is a carryover of this idea.

I can see the ups and downs between both versions; The final draft sets up Luz’s conflict with Camila and the reality camp, which is foundational to her character arc throughout the whole show. Her pain over being ‘sent away’ is just so vital that I appreciate its inclusion in the first episode. But I also like the inclusion of Lumity and the earnest desire to be friends with someone who showed her, unwittingly, any kindness at all! We get explicit bullying from Luz’s peers in the pilot, but in the final draft we also get her thoughtlessness that plays a big part in her S1 arc. And Luz’s arrival in the isles is more intertwined with Eda and King in the final version, which also feels right; The show is about these three in particular!

All in all, this was wonderful to watch! The magic was experienced all over again, not just in watching an episode, but also commentating on one that was just ‘released’ as well? I thought the last time I’d do anything like this was with the series finale Watching and Dreaming… But as Luz said, it really comes full circle with watching the first episode all over again! So maybe we have other stuff to still look forward to after all… At the very least, we have an eternal anticipation with an unexplored universe ahead of us, that will never reach completion; So it's like our ever-lasting final gift from TOH, and a good last one. how r you so good at drawing (halo) armor. You’re literally one of the best I’ve ever seen. Tips please if possible? (specifically for the shapes of the armor)

Oh god heLLO; I'm super bad at explaining my process of drawing RvB armor, as it's been multiple years since I've done it up until recently, so I'm super rusty but I will do my best to explain myself!!!

I've never made any sort of tip guide or tutorial, so please bear with me!

USE REFERENCES!!! This can go for renders from the Halo games directly (ArtStation was a great place to start, I'm not sure how things are post AI ""art"" surge, though) but at the very least, screenshot the heCK out of the series from whatever season you want to draw. There are a lot of different angles, and after they started to animate, it made it easier to get references with arms up or splayed out to the sides, or legs bent and hand motions!! Depends on what you're looking for!!

For this Reference, I used a Halo 3 render, as well as the Caboose-isms poster render. There are more clear renders out there, I'm sure!

First step that I take in learning to draw a new set of armor is color coding the sections that I'm going to draw, and then labeling them with points of interest that make me remember the detail later; Like grooves, or a bevel that looks weird or silly. Color coding and labelling the parts made it easier for me to break it down into smaller bits to draw piece by piece, bc let's face it; Armor can be super tedious and daunting, especially if you're just starting out.

Remember It's ALL SHAPES!!! IT'S JUST SHAPES!!!! Break them down into more simple shapes to find what works best for you! Keep it loose in the sketch stage, so you don't get lost in the pesky details

Remember that the armor goes on TOP of a body, and isn't a part of their body! Halo Infinite dOES have prosthetics that are a bit smaller than the armor, which adds depth and flavor to your armor though!

When in doubt, draw it larger than you mean to, and size it down to fit your other pieces!

SIMPLIFY IT!!! TRACE TO LEARN!!!! Really just figure out where the pieces go and put them together like a puzzle! Armor is simply just, hard, and there's no easy way to learn quickly how to do it efficiently and well; It really does take a lot of practice and trying and sketching and watching clips and staring at other's art to maybe notice shortcuts or even details you didn't notice before!!

But the biggest tip that I can give you is just, don't be afraid to make "bad art" don't be afraid to draw "bad armor" !!! It doesn't have to be perfect, the details don't all have to align on model 100% of the time! All of my art, paintings and all, have things that I fudged or missed, or messed up on and didn't notice, but I still have fun painting and drawing because I like making people laugh with my comics and I like having them feel stuff about my paintings!

‘I know a lot of people have him learn sign language but I think he either writes what he wants to say, speaks as best as he can, or gestures, ( he was born in the south to parents that I don't think cared about communicating with him too much but he could have picked it up later in life maybe in his teen years or middle school era)

More sadistic than Bo when it comes to killing, he doesn't care if they are dead or alive when working on them and takes satisfaction in the result of his work

He prefers to work in silence but you can catch him humming now and then some country song or a guilty pleasure pop song from the 80’s( I see you Vince)

I think he partakes in multiple forms of art besides wax work.We see he’s able to paint, draw, but he also  takes pictures, , sews, writes, makes videos, anything artistic he’s learning and keeping up with new techniques.

Since he takes video of the killings at times I think they sell them as snuff films to make extra cash on top of stealing and selling victims stuff. (At least that’s what I thought when I first watched the film anyone else or just me)

Rarely happens but will keep victims that interest him like Bo ,but dispose of them when they get boring  or no longer match up the ideal version of them in his head.

-Does want a lifelong partner, the white wedding and picket fence, kids,  but knows it might be difficult with the line of work he does.

since they can't function without their neurons they have tiny ones inside of their body!!! i could go on about the functions. thinking about this stuff is so interesting to me.

ok so uhm the main thing i had to keep in mind with their off string design was mobility. OBVIOUSLY. their legs are built the way they are for the sake of traversing through harsh, bumpy and uneven terrain (for a multitude of purposes. i think in general their ancients would just want them to be mobile for important meetings and even in case of emergencies! ancients thinking about the future that DOESN'T involve mass ascension ... unheard of) and have springs based off the "prototype"'s (myths.) feet to absorb impact when falling. fields especially has a special ability to jump higher from the added mechanisms he has in his legs :]

their feet are talon-like for the sake of grip and their legs are generally very agile despite their chunky design! with multiple joints that allow for flexibility. their hips are also built to allow their legs to stretch to the side and whatnot. they're just very flexible in general.

now for my favorite part!!! the jelly-like substance that each of their puppets has acts as their "blood". despite being considered iterator blood it isn't fluid, and is comparable to the texture of the silicone from a breast implant—doesn't spill, is a great regulator for heat, and prevents any possible damage to their innards !!! the ancients figured that they'd need their neurons to function properly sooo they just shrunk down copies of their data into tinier neurons and just. filled em up with them. the neurons float around freely inside of them.

i also think that their cores are somewhere inside their torsos like a real heart, protected by the silicone. they also have a bunch of wires and functions inside that require frequent coolant so they probably have a bottle for it somewhere along their back that can be taken out at any given moment.

i think that's all i have to ramble about so far. they're so neat and fun to think about and ough. they're just like their superstructures fr fr <333 I'll probably yap more later but for now that's all

Why "El Toro de Piedra" fails on all fronts

The Letter

The inciting incident of Marinette's side of this episode is that she finds a letter that Gabriel wrote some time before his death, where he confesses to Adrien that he's Monarch. This causes Marinette to question if lying to Adrien is right. In other words, finding this letter causes her to question the thing she's already questioned multiple times. And at the end of the episode, she decides to keep lying to Adrien. So Marinette's entire story this episode is her making the same decision she already made. They keep rehashing this plotline without changing or progressing everything. This is the definition of running in place.

Also, why did reading this letter make Marinette reconsider her decision? Was it because it made her reinterpret what Gabriel's last words meant? Probably not, since it's not like Gabriel wrote this letter immediately before he died, it was clearly written a while before. Honestly, it feels like the only reason the writers added this letter is because they thought Marinette (and the audience) needed to be reminded of the decision she made. Even though she's already talked about it in previous episodes. What a joke.

Villainous Fathers

This episode reveals that Ivan's father is a supervillain who wants Ivan to follow in his footsteps, and Ivan is keeping this a secret because he feels ashamed. This is clearly meant to draw a thematic parallel between Ivan and Adrien. Except, their situations aren't similar at all. Ivan knows what kind of man his father is. It's not like he's in denial about it or anything. Ivan was the one keeping it a secret from others, due to the fact he was ashamed. How is that related to Adrien? Adrien isn't the one keeping a secret, and he isn't ashamed of something. There's also the stuff about Ivan choosing not to be like his father, which is something that could have been relevant to Adrien, but it's not, because Adrien doesn't know who his father really was. So this theme doesn't work at all.

To add insult to injury, this episode once again has a terrible parent be immediately forgiven. Given how often this happens in this show, I'm convinced that if Gabriel hadn't died, the show would have let him get away with everything he did.

The Concert

The whole concert part of the episode felt so disconnected and tacked on to the episode. In fact, the only real connection it has is the fact that Juleka's song mentions her father, connecting to the attempt at a theme. Other than that, this subplot could have been part of any episode.

How come Juleka needed to perform alone? Ivan and Luka may have been absent, but Rose and Adrien were still there (until Adrien had to leave too). Both of them can play the keyboard, why didn't either of them back Juleka up?

Finally, in Juleka's song, she puts more importance in her deadbeat dad, rather than her loving single mother. You might argue, "Well, it's because she's a musician like her father." I'd like to remind anyone who claims this that Juleka's mother is also a musician. Ever since season 4, the show has put more importance on Jagged Stone as parent to Luka and Juleka, rather than their mother. But this is the first time that focusing on the deadbeat has been the character's decision. So, I feel like I can say that Juleka Couffaine has been character assassinated.

The Council

Finally, this episode also sets up the idea that Gabriel and Tomoe's alliance wasn't just the two of them, there are also a bunch of other mysterious figures that knew he was Monarch and are working behind the scenes. And one of these people is Nathalie's father. There's not much to talk about here, it's just something that briefly appears at the end. It's just to tease that something interesting might happen in the future. But considering this show's track record of following through on its setups, I have zero faith that anything good will come from this.

Conclusion

I don't think a single thing that this episode tried to do was well executed, and it showed that not even a minor character like Juleka is safe from being ruined. Still not as bad as "Werepapas" though!

Assuming you're referring to how loose my sketches are, I think it boils down to mileage. Alongside the classic recommendation of reference + study, usually when I get really into a piece of media I'll draw characters I like a whole lot and it builds muscle memory, and the ones that end up in my posts usually have already been through that process to some extent.

Studying references + going through a couple dozens rounds of extra wonky proportions and nonsensical physics (definitely visible on my own posts lmao) will help with both your brain and muscle and once you've stacked up enough of that it'll become easier to intuit certain things and keep stuff looser.

(hey this got really long, so just scroll to the bottom to see my current sketch process if you'd prefer that)

In my personal experience as a hobbyist, I spent roughly 3 years butchering the loomis method until things looked even remotely to my liking. And by that I mean "layering bullshit guidelines so thick and heavy that by the time I'm done lightening it via eraser there was barely any paper left." Drawing has been and still is really frustrating sometimes but for most of it I have a lot of fun and honestly as long as you have that it doesn't really matter whatever else (again, hobbyist here. my stakes are low). Switching up medium every once in a while if you can helps keep things interesting, and drawing with a pen is good for building both line confidence and tolerance for your own mistakes.

Honestly for all of that this stuff is still RNG to me lol. Every once in a while things just Will Not Work Out, but the rates definitely gets better the more experience you have. I only post about, say, 20% of what I draw probably. The rest includes but is not limited to practice sketches, personal art, stuff too nonsensical for even tumblr, or sketches I just plain don't like.

Uhhhhh now for what you actually asked. I've grown really lax, if not a little lazy, regarding guidelines (when you've drawn a specific thing often enough it just kinda gets tedious) so now i just do these very thin and light lines vaguely hinting at a character's pose and position. The only thing I consistently do is probably the little circle to indicate the head. For more heavily stylised proportions I'll go into more details at the outline stage, mostly aiming for the feeling of it (usually how goofy it looks since thats what I use them for). For more complex poses/ones I'm not familiar with I'll do multiple iterations.

Unearthed some stuff that I probably wouldn't post otherwise (the proportions are a bit off from what i'd prefer and the lineart isn't that confident). Here i am redrawing this for demonstration purposes

gonna go in order of the photos. everything shown was done with a 0.5 mechanical pencil.

usually i start with these very thin, light lines, just getting a very rough ideas of where everything is - head, torso, pose (spine, arms, legs). i sketch largely with approximations and landmarks, keeping in mind some bullet points for the relative distance among certain body parts (e.g. make sure the elbow is always a little past the rib cage. i'll write more out at the end) rather than any precise guidelines. i often don't even clean these up - at the end the main lineart is harsh enough that they override these, and though they're visible they do not interfere with the image as a whole. you can look at any of my sketches prior to this and find them.

then i go in with hard, dark lines, once again noting the respective distance among facial features (i'm using the loomis proportions, thinking about the face in thirds)

this is so unhelpful when i just say it, but genuinely at this stage i rely on muscle memory and mileage. if you've drawn the same anime girl for a bajillion times you can probably intuit the proportions. remember that 3d things have volume and interact. ("yes, see, her bangs and eyes round out like this, two locks of hair (they're thick and well kept, so they should have a solid cylinder shape...) against the side plane of her face - split that plane of the skull in half, and the ear should be somewhere around there...")

ok for the parts where a lot of things happen (clothes, tie, the pose interfering with them etc) i just go ham. make a mess! draw everything out even if they overlap each other. so you can keep track of them. here i also bring in some light shading to make out the form of her torso.

i lighten the whole thing with eraser, but the previous lines are harsh enough that the residue can act as a new base of sorts. i think this is comparable to having a sketch layer with lowered opacity in a digital piece

i go over the whole thing again now that i've got a better idea of the form

rinse and repeat. go all in, adjust, blow the whole thing up if it looks off and then build on the remains

for the last photo, you can see that I've adjusted the right leg, since now im taking into account perspective. I uhhhhh still am not particularly confident in drawing her shoes (or any other shoes for that matter) in 3d space so once again I'm bullshitting the form with trying to wrap around its shape and to visualize the shadows. usually for these I pull up references and pray

a side note for the hands: against an earlier ask, I've mostly switched to using silhouettes and then sectioning the fingers after. here the slight shading approach also help in blocking out and making them readable without you having to stress over the minutiae of what joint should bend where.

...I've hit the upload limit for photos, so I'll reblog with additions, but in essence:

• very thin lines to map out the pose and mark where certain body parts may go

• i draw everything in approximation, keeping a few bullet points in mind and adjust as i go (which does keep the sketches loose and make it easier to vary proportions for different characters, but also make floating features more likely (evident in some of my more recent posts as well):

loomis for the head and neck

rib cage (+collarbone), then elbow slightly below it

pelvis, crotch halfway point of the whole body

legs, knees their halfway point

feet are about as long as the forearm usually

(Disclaimer: i must stress again that I'm not a professional, and cannot guarantee that these bullet points are entirely correct. This is just how i draw at the time of writing - stylized with little regard for the intricacies of human anatomy)

• with the exception of the first stage, my lines are dark enough that the mistakes get reused as base for correction after they've been lightened with eraser a little bit.

• I also bring in some shading while doing lineart to make sense of form if I'm having trouble. I use this most often for noses, hands, legs, and breasts.

• if you encounter a sketch that Refuses To Work Out, leave it. No, listen to me, Leave It. Revisit it sometimes later, if you want (for mine they range from a week to 5 months, but my sketchbooks disorganization is another matter entirely). just leave it for a bit.

• do a bunch of pen sketches if you wanna get comfortable with mistakes/build muscle memory

• once more, all-time classic: reference the hell out of anything you don't know. 100000 google images. look up a human anatomy 3d model to see what muscles attach to which bone. practice copying 1:1 things that look good to you (practice!! don't post/claim anything as your own if it isn't - this applies to my own stuff btw, feel free to trace for practice at your own risk). note again that the only reason i can only bullshit my way out of these is because i've drawn them dozens of times - the moment you throw me more complex perspectives i'll need to start the learning process all over again

My brain immediately went to even a less urban, more fantasy setting. Master of the magic tower Marco who runs an underground masquerade ‘pleasure’ ball. He uses just enough magic so that the features are there, you just can’t really remember their exact face once you’ve left them.

He can tell, of course, as can his contracted demon Sabo.

So Marco is a bit shocked when he sees the Princess of the kingdom walk in, the Princess who is set to have an arranged marriage to another country.

And really, you’re the one who keeps looking over at them. For the kingdom’s safety it would be in his best interest to keep you nearby tonight and help fulfill any whims you have, rather than leave you be to all the people with their eyes on you.

And ya know, after that, forget that arranged marriage. The king can’t possibly say no to a union between the magic tower.

For anyone that may interest, it's me AG. You probably forgot about me.

Hi !

First of all I wanted to apologies. I don't didn't have that huge of a following but for the few people that followed my stuff and liked my AUs, I'm sorry I have essentially disappeared.

I have a few things to say about why I did and I will announce something regarding the Child mercs AU at the end of this.

So if you are not interested in anything else you can skip to "It brings us to today" further down.

For everyone else (not many I assume):

When I discover something new, a new game, a new anime or whatever, I may hyperfixate on it. I'll only talk about it, I'll only draw fanarts of it etc... Like TF2, this was one of my hyperfixation.

I say was because , for some reason, I can only hyperfixate on one fandom at a time. I can have a lot of things I like and care a lot for, but when it comes to the things that dictates my life and art (Like TF2 did) I can only have one.

I don't know why, I've always been like this and I kinda hate it at times.

Anyway, like you may have seen from my last posts, before leaving I fell into the JJBA fandom.

This was (and still is) my new hyperfixation.

I could literally feel it replace TF2 in my mind. And I hated it.

I still love TF2 dearly, but it had been... "replaced" in a way.

I had a lot of unfinished projet I knew a would have a harder time finishing because I had moved on to something else.

I tried to continu the comic twice. And both time the file got deleted.

I lost what little will I had to continue it.

An I'm sad about it. I hate it when I get invested in something that's unfinished. And I said multiple times that I would finish it ! That and the Cryptid AU.

But I never did.

It brings us to today:

I wanted to do this for a while and with the final entry of the TF2 comics finally out I figured now was a good time.

Even though I want to, I don't know when or even IF I'm going to finish drawing the comics.

THAT SAID, though the drawings aren't finished, the story, the description of what would have been on every page is !

It's been since before I started drawing it.

And I thought I could do something with it.

I can publish the last pages of the Child mercs comic in written form. Every drawing described and with the dialogue that should have accompanied it.

You'll essentially have the entire story, just, without the little drawings.

But only if you still care about it. And I know some of you did and even if only one of you want it, I'll do it.

It won't be the version I wanted, with my drawings, but if I never make them, at least you can enjoy the end of the story. And I'd hate to keep that from you forever.

Again I'm sorry for leaving, I figured you wouldn't want to see Jojo Fanart when I hadn't even finished my TF2 projects.

I'm still very grateful for all the nice comments I received, and maybe one day I'll come back with a few TF2 drawings to show you :)

P.S.: I never had a written thing for the Cryptid AU, I kinda want to rewrite it entirely but I'm working on another project. Though it's nearing completion so maybe I'll have time.

I mainly wanted to say, though I didn't have any idea where the story was heading, I did have an idea why they all became cryptids so if you want to hear about it too. Let me know.

Idk if you already discussed this but how do you feel about Adrinette being canon when there wasn‘t a reveal yet? Because I think the show just took all the exciting aspects of the love square away by making one side canon and the others strictly platonic.

Sure, they‘re cute and whatnot, but I don‘t think they‘re exactly interesting without the identity shenanigans and stuff? Especially because (to me at least) Adrinette always felt like the weakest side. It‘s a school crush romcom type of love, which is great and all, but like…. You have superheroes in your show?? Hello??? Why not combine the two elements more effectively???The others are either badass superhero couple (I loved the Ladynoir dynamic in the movie for example) or one superhero hangs out with the civilian and they bond. That‘s literally all of fanon Marichat, and I personally think it works with Ladrien too. There‘s different aspects of those relationships that can be explored and create problems that they have to overcome (like the power imbalance with the civilian x hero ships, how do you handle that while dating?)

I wish the writers would use the square more effectively

I'm not against pre-reveal dating, but I agree that Adrienette is the worst side to chose from a story telling perspective because - as you so rightly pointed out - it's arguably the side with the least identity shenanigans and the side that has the least ties to the superhero stuff that's supposed to be the show's main focus. Adrienette is the side you chose if you're focusing on civilian drama which, to be fair, was season five's main focus even though Gabriel had stolen the miraculous and we were all expecting that complication to be the focus of the season five plot.

Instead the focus was "will Marinette ever have the courage to say a kind word to Adrien's face instead of just telling others how much she loves him even though she knows that he explicitly returns her feelings, making this plot kind painful on every level" which was... a choice.... Five seasons and we're still doing this shit? Really?

This may mean that the writer's plan in season six is to continue to focus on civilian drama or it could mean that they didn't think further than season five and we're about to get a lot of awkward writing. Who knows? I have no idea how they're going to handle civilian dating plus secret identities for long since the writers chose the only side of the square where running off to fight akumas isn't a given thing that the couple-in-question knows will happen. My best guess is that the writers will probably just avoid putting Adrienette in the type of situations Adrigami and Lukanette were put in, I guess?

No matter how they handle it, I don't expect major identity shenanigans because the show has never done much with identity shenanigans probably because quality identity shenanigans require you to be able to draw out plots over multiple episodes and then resolve those plots. This show cannot have that kind of plot progression given it's formulaic nature and the "there must always be a secret between Adrien and Marinette" rule, thus the identity shenanigans being so limited.

This means that the side best suited to the show's writing is probably Ladynoir. Still room for the minor identity shenanigans that the show limits itself to, baked-in-yet-low-stakes tension from having to keep the relationship a complete secret, and a much more logical result of the writing in the first four seasons. While Adrien is far from perfect and has issues to rival Marinette's, his crush always felt like the stronger one given that he actually spent time with Ladybug and had a true relationship with her.

Marinette, on the other hand, barely talked to Adrien because the show literally has a rule that she can never successfully confess her crush, so they needed to keep her and Adrien from becoming close to make those continued failed confessions somewhat plausible. Given all that, it's hard for me to buy that Adrien's crush flipped to this girl that he barely knows. Meanwhile Ladybug's crush flipping had a pretty strong setup given that Chat Noir has been her loyal support in her darkest hours.

But that's not what they went with! Instead of having the secret be the low-stakes identities secret, the secret between them is, "Your father was a super villain whose minions killed you on multiple occasions and whose death you were arguably involved with. While were on the topic of your messed up family, you're an artificial being whose creation killed you mother. Oh, and we're also hero partners, which feels like a minor thing compared to all of that, but we might as well mention that, too."

...choice were made folks. Choices were made. This is so not how you write a formula show! You never go this serious!

Since you mentioned the Civilian/hero pairings, let's talk about those both to end on a lighter note and because that's where my personal favorite lies as I am here for identity shenanigans. That's right, folks, I am once again here to sell you on my Ladrien supremacy agenda.

While I have nothing against Marichat, it is not a good fit for canon. It's simply too limiting because Marinette is not a celebrity. There's a reason that of Marinette's canon hangouts with Chat Noir (and almost all Marichat fics) start on her balcony. That's really the only place they can meet up without drawing attention, which should be a major concern for them.

I physically cringed when the show had them go to the movies and on an ice cream date because Chat Noir was being so irresponsible! He cannot be shown to have a close relationship with a civilian, which is the excuse he should have given at the end Elation since that the episode included Gabriel discovering their relationship. The excuse Chat Noir actually gave feels pretty dismissive of his canon relationship with Marinette. She has canonically spent more time talking to Chat Noir then she's spent talking to Adrien and the same actually goes for the amount of time Ladynoir spends talking about non-hero things, so this feels off:

Cat Noir: I’m sorry about what happened, Marinette. You’re right, you have the right to love anyone you want. Even a superhero. But it’s easy for a person to mistake idolization of a superhero for love. So, even if I like this person very much, I could be taking advantage of the situation, and I just can’t do that. It would be wrong.

Evil Illustrator, their heartfelt talk in Glaciator, the movie date in Glaciator 2, and a bunch of other little moments add up to somehow make Marichat the deepest side of the square, which is painfully bad writing given how little screen time this side gets, but it's still what canon gave us. Marinette is not just a fan who only knows him from a distance. They are friends and even occasional teammates. The only reason this pairing doesn't work in canon is because there's nowhere for the relationship to go until a partial or total reveal happens.

Prior to that, it's just these two hanging out on her balcony or maybe going on secret dates around the city. Cute, but not suited to a silly superhero romcom aimed at kids where every story needs to be told in about 20 minutes. It's best left to long form fan content that is allowed to be more about drama and romance than the actual show and also a little more spicy than the actual show because - let's be real here - those rooftop dates would not just be talking. I don't know how you'd write this pairing in a way that's both genuine and well suited to the intended audience. It's simply way more suited to a teen drama than a kid's show.

Ladrien, on the other hand, could work if canon wanted to go there. I don't think it would be a good fit for more than a season*, so Ladynoir is still the better pick for canon's format, but Ladrien could be a nice bit of pre-reveal padding to draw out the reveal and add some fun comedy if the show were allowed to have a reveal.

Because Ladybug and Adrien are both celebrities, you can have them interact in diverse settings without anyone thinking twice. This allows for a good amount of hijinks where Ladybug is trying to protect her boyfriend at public events without revealing their relationship while Adrien is trying to get her to let him run off and transform.

You can also do things like the public seeing them together, thinking they're a couple, and having them both deny it because they aren't, leading to Ladynoir comedy where Ladybug cries because she wishes they were and Chat Noir is like, "Wait, what? You what? ...My Lady, as your loyal partner who is here to support you in all things, I will get you your man even if it kills me!" The thinking-they're-a-couple thing could also be solved via Ladynoir by Ladynoir going public while Adrien remains "single". There's just a lot of potential for the show's style of absurdist humor here.

*Ladrien does eventually fall into the same issues as Marichat where it feels like the reveal needs to happen otherwise you're just repeating the same plots or going too spicy for a kids show via bedroom-based meetups, thus me saying that it's only good for about a season. There's also the problem that Akuma fights and supervillains are endless fodder for Ladynoir issues, but the only issue Ladrien could possibly address is Gabriel and Marichat's got nothing save for maybe Lila? So if you don't want to let a reveal happen, Ladynoir really is the best pick by far. Adrienette can work, but it's way less fun since they have to keep all these secrets while Ladynoir really only has one major secret or, at least, Ladynoir should only have one major secret (the identities). Canon has really dropped the ball on this one.

Now that I've written all this out, maybe the spicy issue is why canon went Adrienette? It's a lot easier to limit their alone time than it is to limit the alone time of any other side. I maintain that you could get away with it in pre-reveal Ladynoir by just ignoring the issue and giving them things to fight any time they try to have a date. You could also end episodes on them starting their date, leaving everything to the imagination but also keeping the setting relatively public (rooftops and the like) unlike the civilian/hero sides whose dates are going to be way more private. I fully understand why a show aimed at 5-to-12-year-olds wouldn't want to go there. That is far more suited to the teen drama Miraculous so desperately wants to be based on the ill-suited plots the writers keep going with.

------ Chapter 13: Drink ------

When we get up the next morning, Jackie describes to me what she needs in order to practice magic. She tells me that the stone I bought her can aid in drawing out magical energy, if she indeed has the capacity to perform magic, but she needs it to be fashioned into an article small enough for her to keep on her person. I smash the lapis lazuli with a hammer, smooth the edges with a file, and tie a thin thread around one of the shards so she can wear it like a necklace. 

Additionally, she elaborates on the different types of magic. She theorizes that she might be able to use lightning magic, since she was struck by a magic blue bolt that brought her to the Land of Giants. She also believes blood magic is a possibility, though I note some reticence when she brings up the topic. 

“Blood magic? Sounds ominous,” I jest. 

“Ah, well.” She fiddles with her hands. 

“Jackie? What is it?” 

“In order to use blood magic, I have to… um… drink giant blood.” She flashes me an uneasy smile. “Imbibe the essence into my body, so to speak. Much like how the lightning coursed through me.” 

“Oh! I… I see. I suppose I could oblige…” I’m a bit discomfited by the notion, but I grab a knife from the kitchen and bring it over to her. When Jackie beholds the gleaming silver of the blade, she whitens. 

“Sorry,” I say softly, concealing the sharp edge with my fingers. I nick my fingertip with a muted grunt and squeeze out a drop of blood. I lower my hand to her level, presenting her with the rich ruby ball of fluid. “Here you go. Bon appétit, my darling.” I chuckle. 

She makes a face before draining the drop to a smaller size with an exploratory drink. “Ugh!” she cries, pulling back. “Gross!” 

“You don’t like how I taste?” I joke, pretending to be offended. I suck the rest of the drop off my finger. 

She sticks out her tongue. “No! It’s too thick and metallic.” She wipes her mouth on her arm. “Bleh. How could anyone like the taste of blood?” 

“Er…” I get flustered. I’ve never sampled Jackie’s blood, but I’m sure the flavor would drive me wild. Even just the smell excites me. I probably shouldn’t enlighten her with those details, however. I tactfully change the subject. “What’s the point of drinking my blood, if you already have the power of lightning?” 

“Different types of magic are necessary for different spells,” she clarifies. “For instance, lightning magic is good for creating portals, changing the weather, and shocking or stunning enemies. Blood magic has a lot of interesting uses, like healing and protection spells, or manifesting nutritious food. Even temporary size-shifting. Making it highly desirable, if I can master it.” She smacks her lips and grimaces. “Can you bring me some water?” 

“Of course, my love.” I fetch a glass and dangle her over it so she can wash out her mouth. 

“Ah, much better.” I cup her in my hand and plant a small kiss on top of her head. She hums with happiness and pecks my thumb. “Anyways, not everyone can use magic, or even multiple types of magic. I don’t know if I have a natural affinity for any of this stuff. But I want to try!”  

The fire in her eyes warms my soul. I love to see her passionate about her interests. “I believe in you Jaclyn! I’ll do anything I can to help!” I promise, pressing my lips to her again, this time over the front half of her body. She beams. 

A few days pass. I observe Jackie as she practices all the tips and tricks she read in her books. She meditates, recites chants, performs hand movements and special exercises. The lapis lazuli charm I fashioned for her almost never leaves her neck, except when she’s bathing or allowing me to “eat” her. She obsessively grips the stone in her fist and familiarizes herself with every imperfection of the smooth, cool surface. 

She makes no progress. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I see no portals or electric bolts. Not even a spark. I can tell how distressed she is as she recedes into herself, preoccupied with her troubles. I help when I can. I read her books and research the subject, to see if there’s something we’re missing. I give her space when she needs it. I act as a source of comfort when she’s upset. I treat her well, feed her, and attend to any need she may have. I make sure she takes breaks when she gets too stressed or frustrated, and sleeps when she’s fatigued.  

I do whatever I can to support her, but she’s grinding herself down faster than I can build her up. She’s strong-willed and resilient, yet I can plainly recognize her growing fear that she will never see her friends and family again. She’s growing more desperate, though she doesn’t talk about it with me. We sit silently through dinner. Jackie picks at her food while I eat mine mindlessly. As much as I’d like to dine on her tonight, I can sense now is not a good time. 

I clean up the table and stack the dishes in the sink. “Chester,” Jackie calls. Her tone is serious. 

I turn around and give her my full attention. “Yes?” 

“There’s one thing I haven’t tried yet.” 

“Oh?” 

She pauses. “According to one of my texts, magical potential can be released ‘under extreme duress or in a life-threatening situation.’ But I don’t know how I’d be able to simulate such a circumstance…” She shrugs, dejected. 

I stare down at her, thinking hard. My stomach gurgles, digesting its fill, and a very devious scheme coalesces in my brain. My desires align like stars of fate: I want to help her, but I also want to eat her alive, swallow her whole, relish her squirms in my digestive system. A golden opportunity has presented itself that I can’t pass up. I’d be justified in consuming her, even if against her will, in order to fulfill such a condition. My mouth salivates with anticipation. 

With my heart racing, I open the fridge and grab a bottle of beer. I’ll have to maximize her fright and toy with her for my plan to bear any fruit. I strip off the label and throw it away, so I can see the interior through the walls of dull brown glass. I sit down at the table, staring down at Jackie with a look I hope is menacing. She tilts her head with confusion. 

I strike swift and hard like a snake, snatching Jackie off the table and stuffing her down the neck of the bottle. She plunks into the beer with a splash and resurfaces, coughing and spitting, with a stunned look. She swims to the glass, slaps her palms on the surface, and glares at me. 

“Chester!” she snaps. “Why did you do that?” 

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to drink you up,” I tease, a roguish grin plastered on my face. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm as I rotate the bottle in my fingers, stirring Jackie in the frothy liquid. She looks very refreshing. 

“Chester, this is silly. It won’t work because I’m not afraid of you.” I call tell she’s lying by how her voice wavers. My toothy grin widens further and I lick my lips. I can’t wait to take a drink. I raise the bottle to my lips and tilt it back, pouring a small sip down my throat. Even though she doesn’t flow into my mouth, a hint of her flavor tantalizes my taste buds nonetheless. 

“Chester, I changed my mind. I don’t want to do this anymore. Please let me out.” Her rising fear is clearly apparent. I wilt with disappointment as my heart wins out over my stomach. As much as I yearn to ingest her, I know I shouldn’t. 

Before I can respond, the front door rattles with a loud knock. I’m so startled by the interruption, I nearly drop the bottle. 

“Chester, are you home?” a giant bellows from the other side. My gaze meets Jackie’s, and we both blanch as we recognize simultaneously the gravity of the situation. To my horror, the door opens without my input and a fat man strolls in, one I know all too well.  

“Hey there ol’ Chestnut, haven’t seen you in forever! Hiding in the woods as always eh?” 

“B-brother!” I stammer in an abnormally high pitch. Shit! This is bad! 

“I see you’ve already started cracking beers without me!” my brother guffaws. I gape in disbelief as his beefy hand grabs the bottle right out of my grasp. He lifts the beer to his mouth eagerly. 

“Wait Jasper! Don’t drink that!” I exclaim, scrambling to stop him. To my relief, the bottle halts before it enters the hazardous void of his maw. I can see Jackie floundering wildly within, trapped in a circle of glass. Jasper, of course, is oblivious. 

“Why?” he questions. He sniffs the beer suspiciously, and a dreamy look spreads across his features as Jackie’s scent tickles his nostrils. “Wow, that beer smells amazing! Almost like there’s a little human in there!” He laughs heartily, jiggling his paunch.  

“Well…” What the hell am I supposed to say? If I tell him there’s a real live human, he’ll only be more stoked about swallowing her down. “They came out with a new flavor of beer that’s supposed to taste like humans. But you shouldn’t drink it, it’s disgusting. Total garbage.” I bite my lip, praying he’ll buy my lie. 

“Huh.” Jasper examines the bottle, swirling it around in his hand. Jackie flits around helplessly inside, still evading his notice due to how infinitesimal she is. I feel like I’ll snap under the tension. 

“I’m willing to give it a shot,” he utters, snipping my last string of composure. Before I can stop him, he tosses back the beer and chugs it. I behold Jackie’s horrified expression as she slides through the neck of the bottle and disappears through his lips. His neck bulges with thick gulps as he swallows, sending her straight to his belly. 

“No!” I cry out, ripping the bottle out of his hand and throwing it to the side. 

Jasper laughs, assuming my act is all a big joke, and smacks his chops with satisfaction. “Ahh! That was great!” 

Wrath flares up in my gut. My brother, with his flippant attitude, drives me up the wall with his inability to take anything seriously. “You idiot!” I yell, clenching and unclenching my fists. “I told you not to! Why did you drink it? Spit her out!” 

Jasper knits his eyebrows together, puzzled. “Slow down brother, why are you so angry?” 

I huff at his cluelessness, barely able to restrain my rage. “My friend was in there! Her life is in danger, inside your stomach! Throw her up, NOW!” 

“Huh?” He’s even more lost now as he itches his head, completely baffled. 

I pinch my brow with my fingers, gritting my teeth. “My friend… a human. She was in the bottle.” 

“What? A real human?” Jasper asks incredulously. Understanding dawns on his face as he finally connects the dots. 

“Yes!” I shout with exasperation, waving my arms. “You ATE her!” 

“Well, what’s wrong with that?” Jasper retorts, scratching his belly with a nonchalance that makes me want to strangle him. “You put her in the bottle in the first place.” 

“AUGHHHH!” I squawk, throwing up my hands. My temper spikes and I crank back my fist to punch Jasper in the stomach, with the hope that I can force him to expel her. Jasper’s eyes widen with alarm and he raises his own fists to defend himself. 

Before we can exchange blows, however, Jasper unexpectedly groans with pain and crumples to his knees. “Oh… my stomach…” He grips his midsection, bends over, and barfs all over the floor.  

I spy Jackie flapping in the muck and spring into action, rescuing her from the puddle. I rush over to the kitchen sink to wash off the acid, ignoring my brother entirely as he continues to cough and gag dramatically. I’m bristling with a mix of ire and concern as I hurry over to the privacy of the bathroom to get Jackie properly cleaned and dressed. Luckily, she doesn’t appear to be hurt or burned. 

I’m embroiled in an avalanche of frenzied emotions as my fingers meticulously rub and prod at the tiny woman in my care. Just when it seemed like we had reached a stable point in our relationship, with our worst hardships behind us, this had to happen. Eaten again. Will this incident be the last straw for her? I’m dreading what Jackie will say once the shock of the situation wears off. I dry her with a towel, my heart fracturing yet again. I won’t be able to bear rejection if she ultimately refuses me. 

“Chester! It worked! I was able to use lightning magic!” she squeals with a smile as she puts on a set of clean clothes. This... was not the reaction I expected. She must still be in a state of stupefaction. I assume her magic must’ve caused Jasper to throw up. Distressed and frustrated, I sigh and massage my temples as I search for the right words to mend my wrongs. 

“Jackie, you know I had no intention of actually eating you, right? I was just trying to scare you! I didn’t know my stupid brother was going to show up.” I really was planning to let her out when she got scared; it’s not a total lie. I get closer to her for comfort, as if she’s a warm candle in a cold room, placing my hands next to her on the counter. 

“It’s okay. No harm done,” Jackie assures me, patting my knuckle. “And your brother didn’t even know I was in there. I don’t blame him.” 

“Just wait here, I’ll show him out the door,” I snarl. 

“No, it’s alright. He can stay.” 

I cock a brow, perplexed. “Seriously? Even after all that?” 

“Yes,” she persists. “I figure I have to meet your family at some point, if I’m going to stay here in the Land of Giants with you.” 

My jaw unhinges at this bombshell. My feverish thoughts screech to a halt. The rigidity releases from my muscles, and I suddenly feel cozy and warm, as if I’ve been swaddled in a fuzzy blanket. Jackie never ceases to amaze me. “That’s true,” I admit in a subdued tone.  

Jackie gazes up at me with a tender smile. Her soft brown eyes reflect only kindness and love, without a shred of resentment. I melt. “Alright. Are you sure this is what you want?” I ask her to confirm. 

“Yeah,” she agrees, though I detect a flicker of nervous energy. I offer her protection and support via my open palm. Courageous as always, she leaps into my hand and sits down, fitting perfectly into the dip in the middle, as if she always belonged there. “I’m ready.” 

I share in her anxiety as I chauffeur her back to the kitchen. I’m not sure how my brother will react to the idea of me dating what he essentially perceives to be a sentient snack. Though Jasper harbors no ill will towards humans, he doesn’t possess any moral qualms about eating them either. And I don’t even want to think about the rest of my family! 

When I enter the kitchen, I find Jasper sitting at the table, throwing back another beer. I’m surprised to see he cleaned up his mess, though he appears frazzled. He spots us and flushes, particularly as his green eyes, a shade darker than mine, fall on Jackie. 

“S-sorry about that,” he directs to her, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “I didn’t know you were in that bottle.” 

I’m surprised to see Jasper taking the matter seriously. I suppose my extreme response, to the point where I was willing to engage in physical violence with my own brother, underscored how important Jackie is to me. 

“It’s alright,” Jackie squeaks tremulously from my hand. “I know it wasn't your fault. I forgive you.” 

Jasper seems relieved that she accepted his apology, but her words are followed by an awkward pause as none of us know what to say next. I clear my throat, realizing I need to step in and provide some social lubricant with proper introductions. “Jasper, I’d like you to meet my girlfriend. This is Jaclyn.” 

That emotionally charged word—girlfriend—is met with stunned expressions from both parties. Jackie blushes hard and turns around to face me, her mouth open. I smile down at her lovingly and she brightens like a ray of sunshine, obviously enamored. 

“Girlfriend?” Jasper parrots, quirking a brow. He shoots me a skeptical look. 

“Chester, you can let Jasper hold me if he wants. So he can see me better,” Jackie chirps boldly. Yet again, I’m impressed. I can't imagine being Jackie’s size and voluntarily entering into the hands of the man-eating giant that just consumed her alive. Jasper, too, raises his eyebrows at her daring proposition. 

In opposition to her verbalization, her body vibrates slightly in my palm. I’m tempted to clasp her to my chest and hide her instead, but I respect her autonomy. I know I can trust my brother not to harm her, so I hold out my hand and present her freely to him. He pauses before bridging his hand with mine so Jackie can cross over. She cautiously steps into his palm and settles on her knees. Jasper lifts her to eye level to examine her. Jackie doesn’t falter, staring right back into the colossal eye in front of her. 

“You’re pretty,” he says in a soft voice. “And very brave. I don’t think I’ve ever met a human who wasn’t absolutely terrified of a huge giant like me.” 

Jackie finally breaks, averting her gaze shyly. “Thank you.” 

“I can see why you like her,” my brother remarks, turning to me. To my relief, he hands Jackie back over to me. I receive her and wrap my hands protectively around her, even though she’s no longer quaking. I’m pleasantly surprised by my brother’s respectful restraint in how he treats her. The interaction went better than I could’ve ever hoped for. 

“What brings you out to my neck of the woods, Jasper?” I ask, changing the subject. I don’t get visits often. 

Jasper smacks his forehead. “Oh, I completely forgot with all the excitement! There’s a game on tonight. I thought you might want to watch it with me.” He glances over at the clock ticking away on the wall. “It probably started already.” He hurries over to the living room, clicks on the TV, and plants his butt on the couch. 

“We’ll be over there in a minute,” I call. I bring Jackie up to my lips, curling my hands around her tenderly. “You did so well! I’m proud of you,” I purr. In a swell of passion, I kiss her sensually, covering her delicate body with my lips. She runs her hands along my lips and kisses me back in a heated embrace. Oh, how I wish to forget Jasper altogether and retire to the bedroom instead... 

“Thanks, Chester,” she murmurs in honeyed tones. “I like being your girlfriend. And I love you.” 

I rest my lips on her body, reveling in the soft hills and valleys of her delightful feminine form. She’s mine, all mine. I’m so grateful that we overcame another hurdle unscathed. I’m so grateful for her strength. We are bound to each other, closer than ever. “I love you too.”

Does bill have "a type"? Since you said he only dates every millennium, what kinds of stuff would catch this lunatic's eye? What would motivate him?

This is the first point because it's the answer he'd give: if you ASK him, he'll say he's "a complete sucker for those deep, brooding artist types." He'll say this like it's his biggest weakness. He says it like it's a charming little character flaw. This is the narrative he tells himself. What he ACTUALLY means is if you hit on him, and if you have created art of him (visual art, sculpture, music, poetry), the odds that he'll return the interest go up by 1000%. He is incredibly vain, he loves art of himself, and "willing to give Bill art of himself" is an insanely attractive trait.

Some species have sexy eyeballs. Other species don't. It just so happens that Earth, as a whole, has evolved an array of eyeballs that are by and large pretty sexy when compared to the multiversal baseline. Those little, like, thready filament things in the irises? Mesmerizing. Visible veins?? Drive him crazy. Bloodshot eyes? Gonna be haunting his fantasies for weeks. Top tier is those frog eyes with multiple colors or crazy crackly-looking patterns.

He's not a fan of heads. Like, when a species puts a face on a little bobbly looking thing separated from the rest of the body, rather than right on the torso where it belongs? Looks weird. It's not a dealbreaker but he's definitely more attracted to species that put their faces where they belong. Similarly, a mouth without an eye in it looks weird.

Big fan of bright colors. You know what's attractive? Looking like Lisa Frank colored you. Wearing bright colors isn't as good as being bright colors, but he still finds wearing bright colors to be an attractive trait.

If you combine the last three points, I think that I accidentally made Bill's ideal lover a poison dart frog.

Usually at some point pretty early in the dating process he's gonna say something like "Just so you know—really, I'm not as bad as all the rumors and gossip and ancient legends and globally-broadcasted warning PSAs make me sound. But: I am totally crazy. You wanna stick with me, you've gotta be cool with crazy." What he's looking for is someone who says "oh I am SO cool with crazy, I am the MOST cool with crazy, crazy is GREAT." When he says this, he's not saying "I'm actually mentally ill and need someone who's supportive and understanding." He's also not saying "I'm a wild crazy fun party guy and I want a partner who can keep up with that lifestyle." What he's saying is "I am an inconsistent and inconsiderate asshole who will show no regard for you, and in a year when you're complaining about the selfish harmful things I'm doing, I'll get to roll my eye and go 'I THOUGHT you SAID you were COOL with crazy. Are you NOT cool with crazy??' And then I'll complain about you to my friends." So: he'll focus on naive emotional doormats he can push around. He'll probably draw back from someone who stands up to him, unless he got seriously interested in them before they grew a spine.

But that said, he is also more likely to show interest in people who can keep up with his lifestyle. He parties with apocalypse machines. If he sees an alien at a party where three absolutely wasted demigods started mixing sink chemicals and accidentally set off a big bang that took out half the neighborhood, and the next weekend he sees that alien at another party? That means they party hard, they don't scare easy, they don't die easy, and they avoided the cops. That's somebody he wants to spend time with. If they're not lover material, they might be Henchmaniac material. Similar opinions on substance use and mass destruction a plus.

He's kinda into nerds. Not in and of themselves, but if they already hit other traits he likes, that's a plus. If he has a choice between two identical people and one's dumb as a rock, he prefers the one who knows lots of things and likes to share facts and trivia. Bill goes for long, long stretches without feeling curiosity, and those stretches typically coincide with when he feels most depressed; someone who can drive him to think a little bit is a godsend.

If someone literally worships him, like as a god, he's into that. It's not partner material but he'll put a star next to their name in his booty call list.

Any novel Extreme Sensations, he likes. Particularly pain. Not a lot of stuff can hurt him in his true form. If someone can make him feel pain, that's interesting to him. Not even necessarily in a BDSM way. If holding someone's hand feels like being electrocuted, or they give off a gas that makes everything too loud and makes him see weird colors? That's someone he wants to touch.

I think I've just added another trait to the "poison dart frog" column.

His love language is gifts & favors, both giving and receiving. If somebody gives him a gift, he'll remember them positively. Even if it's a kinda lame gift. It makes him feel liked. Roses & chocolates would work on him.

He's not liable to be the first to express interest, because he finds being rejected utterly devastating. On the other hand, he prefers to take the lead/call the shots in a relationship. So if somebody lets it be known that they're interested in him, but then hangs back to allow him to make the first move? Appealing.

He's a sucker for gold and tacky displays of wealth. Like he's sort of disgusted by wealthy people, but he's very into wealth. If you're rich have fun with it. If you're not ordering a $900 sundae coated with gold leaf just because you can then what's the POINT. Also, Bill is tacky. If some multidimensional billionaire decides to show an interest in him by gifting him an extremely ugly diamond-covered top hat, he'd probably let them do things to him that he wouldn't even confess to his doctor. (He doesn't have a doctor but.) I think what this boils down to is that he's only into rich people who are living like they want to go broke as soon as possible.

He goes through most of his existence feeling like Nobody Understands Him. Part of this is because he's bad at communicating his sincere feelings & emotional needs and even worse at relating to or caring about other people; but part of it is just because there's not a whole lot of people who can directly relate to "my ambition drove me to destroy my entire universe and ever since then I've been grappling with the paralyzing guilt while struggling to find a new universe." So when he DOES meet somebody who he believes can really, truly understand him the way most people can't? He emotionally latches onto them HARD. Not necessarily romantically, but it easily could be. This is last on the list but probably the most important point to getting a genuine emotional connection rather than fleeting physical attraction from him.

Example that hits multiple of the above points: one of his longest & most emotionally meaningful relationships was with a sentient black hole who—quite literally—destroys anyone who gets too close to her, and is constantly wracked with chronic pain due to being a fucking black hole. She did poetry at open mic nights. She'd go up to a mic and say something like "this poem is called The Taste Of Unwillingly Consuming The Solar System You Called Your Home" and then scream into the microphone for five minutes without pause. Bill was like "she's the only one in the multiverse who Gets It." He is a sucker for brooding artists. She let him get away with unspeakable things because he's one of the only entities powerful enough to get physically close to her and survive. Which was incredibly painful, but hey, he was into that too.

Maybe they'd still be together if she looked like a frog.
