"An ideal Sims game would have Sims 2's gameplay mechanics, Sims 3's open world, and Sims 4's graphics!"
I absolutely despise this take, and I want to explain why. This is a very long rant and it is full of piss and vinegar directed at everything in the Sims 4. I'm gonna try to keep everything kinda professional as much as I can but I can't guarantee an unbiased opinion.
If you'll let me talk your ears off for a moment, I'd like to explain, from my own experience as an artist and a casual player, my issues with the art style and direction of The Sims 4 compared to The Sims 2. (I'm not really going to comment on 3 because I've never played it.)
I want to start off by explaining the difference between better graphics and higher resolution. The Sims 4 absolutely blows Sims 2 out of the water when it comes to textures and polygon counts on sims, no contest. But I'd argue that the graphics themselves... aren't better. They're worse, even, so much fucking worse. The biggest problems come from the stylization and the animations, in my opinion, so I'll explain what I mean.
Have you ever felt like the Sims in 4 just look... weird? Not quirky, not kinda strange, but off. Distressing. Uncanny. Whatever the fuck the kids call it nowadays. When you strip away the packs and the CC and the shaders, the sims in the base game look bad. They're very close to being human; they walk like us, talk like us, have families like us, but they don't look like us, not exactly. There's always something off about them, no matter how close you try to get. Proportions will be a bit off, or your eyelashes will be like three polygons for some fucking reason, and the jig is up. The illusion is gone.
This is one of the instances where a higher resolution and more detailed models and meshes work against you. You aren't making believe. You are beyond the point of pretending that the pixelated shapes are real clothes and bodies and faces, because at this point, they're close enough that you don't need to. There's no gap to bridge. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're lifelike, at least, not enough to be completely human. In some ways, they're still tethered to being cartoony and plasticky and fake. Just enough to frighten you. Enough to put you off. They're not using it to their advantage anymore, and instead, it's holding them back.
When the Sims 2 came out in 2004, the developers knew that they weren't going to make a perfectly accurate life simulator. They physically couldn't render every wrinkle in the face or fold in the clothing. In some animations, things clip strangely or the facial expressions are sort of janky or there's just some form of roughness around the edges. But that's okay; your brain doesn't need a perfectly accurate representation this time. That's not what you're here for, anyway.
The Sims 4 is basically Icarus-ing itself into disaster. The entire game sacrifices style for complete realism, a goal that was unachievable ten years ago, and is unachievable now.
The Sims 2 never thought of itself as a completely realistic life sim, though. It has cartoony, low poly meshes and exaggerated proportions and wild, raunchy storylines that would never occur in real life. BECAUSE IT ISN'T REAL LIFE. And it isn't like real life, not because it's failing to be, but because it doesn't want to be!
The Sims 4 is not ever going to completely replicate human looks or interactions or dynamics. And if it's trying to, it's doing a shit job of it. That shouldn't be the goal in the first place. If I wanted to watch a lonely college student talk to himself in the mirror to try and get better at interacting with people, I'd close the computer and go look at myself. It somehow highlights the most mundane parts of life without any of the whimsy and goofiness that the earlier installments had. It takes itself too fucking seriously for its own good, and it's killing both the gameplay and the art style.
The other point I'd like to bring up is the animation. The Sims 4 allows for much more customization of both sim and environments, but at the cost of dynamic animations. How many times is that grab animation reused? How many times is the same set of animations used for sims with wildly different personalities? Your sims barely feel alive with how little they express themselves.
Now, look, I'm a digital artist. I've dabbled in animation, but only briefly, and only in 2D. I've got no clue how 3D animation works, much less how it worked 20 years ago, but I can see the passion in every single animation in the Sims 2. The more niche interactions allowed for more expressive animations than in 4. They could afford to have a distinct animation for mean sims throwing the football extra hard to be assholes, rather than every sim using the same generic football-throwing animation to save time and money. I get where they're coming from. I get the idea. But in one move, you've both made the art style stiffer and less expressive, and you've made the personalities of the sims seem meaningless. Everyone acts the same, regardless of what their moodlets or their traits say. It's hollow. It's stifled. It's a waste of potential.
But for what Sims 2 lacks in polygons, it makes up for in smaller animated details. Quality over quantity. The sims have hair physics, they open the door before they get in the car, they take utensils out of the counters when they cook, they jump on the couch and the cushions smush under their weight. When they dance, the weight is realistic, and when they smile, it tugs at every one of the few dozen shapes that make up their faces. The sims are lively. They dance and sing and love and hate just like humans, and rather than being some strange attempt at mimicry, it's almost a tribute. They were made with love. You can tell that they were drawn up and rigged and animated by a bunch of people working together, studying each other and making faces in the mirror for reference and watching their kids and neighbors and dogs and hands for reference. The sims are not human, and not trying to be, but they're taking the most human parts of us and making them their own.
You could never have a game with the Sims 4's graphics and the Sims 2's gameplay. The gameplay and graphics are inexorably connected, and the Sims 2 just has so much glorious detail baked into it, that you could never really make it work underneath the limitations of the later games. The developers of 2 knew what their limits were, and they worked tirelessly to make the game as full and complex as they could within those limits. The developers for the Sims 4 just did not have those guidelines, and thus, the drive to bend the rules was no longer there. They didn't go wild in rebellion because they were never told they couldn't in the first place. They spent the entire time chasing a goal they couldn't meet, and lost sight of what made the series fun to begin with.
It wasn't the realism you came for; you had realism already surrounding you. It was the caricature of it that made it interesting.

I wish people (dumb out of the bubble general audiences) stopped thinking that the coffin of Andy and LeyLey is supposed to be a "good" representation of incest abuse cuz ....no.....Its not, i doubt that was ever the intention.
The creator cleary just wanted to make an incest couple in her own way. Yes, It is romanticized and seen as good thing in the story (kinda??) but just because an creator adds problematic stuff in their INDIE game theyre not obligated to make it the pinacle of healthy representation just because It got popular, The same works for kinky dark romance for female audiences
Its a cartoony fictional incest relantioship aimed at a niche audience, Its not meant to be similar to reality. If they want a good representation of incest where the media shows how bad this thing can be in real life and teachs a good lesson about abusers then Go check other stuff, im sure theres a bunch of works that Would be good to share for everyone
Oh yeah, they will not do that, cuz they prefer to look cool on twitter talking about every popular thing that appears and seem like the bigger person just cuz they say "incest is bad" about a game that any healthy adult would know that Its not meant to be reality.

Hey, Dad, since we on topic of Mascot Horror media, what's your opinions on some of those?
In general? I think mascot horror is great, and as much as I think people are kinda getting over it, I still find it enjoyable. In terms of specific ones... (I'm gonna list a lot so be ready to read a ramble.
Shipwrecked 64 is amazing from what I've seen. It's pretty... dark a gruesome, but the story is very compelling and I've been watching GTLive play through it and it's been really fun. First mascot horror to scare me in a hot minute.
Güby is a more recent one. Not a game, but like one of those mock-kids shows that features a cartoony/puppet protagonist. Gets to the spooks pretty quick but I love Güby's design and I'd say it's pretty unique. It's on YouTube if you wanna check it out.
BeeVeeKee's "Not Your Normal Kids Show" is also a good non-game mascot horror. They're mainly on TikTok but the series is on YouTube in a playlist and I recommend it.
Poppy Playtime is getting more interesting as time goes. The Cat Nap short was really cool and I'm still excited for the new chapter.
Garten of Banban is... something. I'll be real I have no clue what's happening in these games, I mainly use gameplay of them for background noise, but apparently they have been getting better so cudos to the developers of that game.
Hello Neighbour fucking sucks. It started out good and then it was like watching a train crash.
Speaking of trains, Choo Choo Charles is hilarious and amazing and I love him and I love Pickles. Like. SO much. She's best girl.
Amanda the Adventurer is amazing and I need to consume so much more content of that game. Also Wooly might be evil, but he's just a Little Guy so its okay. Him and Amanda are great I love them.
Slender is a classic Mascot Horror before FNAF. Maybe not scary by today's standards, but goddamn that scared the shit out of me at 7 years old.
Mr. TomatoS and Mrs. LemonS are interesting ones, weirdly full of lore complete with extra files and talking to each other and such.

DUCK SEAONS! Duck Season was a FANTASTIC game! A games based of Duck Hunt where the Dog tries to kill you and also might be your dad? FUCKING. BEAUTIFUL!
AND TATTLETAIL! DOESN ANYBODY REMEMBER TATTLETAIL BECAUSE THAT GAME WAS ACTUALLY REALLY FUCKING GOOD AND THEN IT JUST LIKE VANISHED FROM THE PLANET AAAAHHHHH

ive been looking at a lot of my art recently and ive been noticing im kinda dissatisfied with how it looks, and when i was in the middle of drawing the piece for ffm i finally realised what it was.
i went back and looked the harp scene piece i did for osas, the old selkie piece i did, the lucifer piece i did for trt, and then i looked at some of my more recent stuff, and i realised that a lot of my whimsy is gone.
i like having a kind of cartoony style. i like having "anime noses" and eyes. i like chunky line art and exaggerated proportions. i think that in my effort to improve my artistry skills, i began to force myself to draw more realistically. and thats not what i want!
anywho. this is to say that hopefully a lot of my drawing mojo will come back to me now that i remember how i enjoy to engage in creation. recently whenever a piece has started going awry ive just been giving up on it QWQ

never realised how much i draw lucifer this is kind of embarrassing anyways. i like my proportions here. for me, i think its mostly about how i do the faces. alastor in the OSAS piece there is one of the better ones ive done (which is ironic because lucifer in that one is one of the not as good ones. i shouldve redrawn him but i was lazy). drawing him is so hard for me, and i have no idea why. i can never get his energy right. the death of alastor piece is a little more on the line, but i think thats more the shading than anything (and the shading was done that way purposefully)

LavenderTowne and Hazbin Hotel, Part 2
A while back, a youtuber by the name of Lavendertowne released a video on Hazbin Hotel and the fan reception was… mixed. Lavendertowne discussed her perspective on the series and presented her own ideas of how it could have been done differently, and some people liked what she said, others didn’t.
I made a post discussing her discussion soon after, and I am rather proud of it. So, check that out if it interests you. As the title suggests, this is going to be a follow up.
But recently as of writing this (I’m prewriting this a few weeks before it will go out), a second video was released, and I have thoughts.
Let me explain.
SPOILERS AHEAD: (Hazbin Hotel)

The framing device of this video is that it is an alternate universe in which Lavendertowne has been given full creative control, as such, her design sensibilities supersede everything else, and I want to point out that this means your relationship as an audience is different.
I will not be judging the quality of the artwork and skill, and I will instead be pointing out what the different designs imply through what elements they incorporate, and discussing the criticisms levelled at the series.
This AU doesn’t have to deal with any of that, this is one person putting out her thoughts.
The original series had to go through Amazon Prime’s standardisation and animation and budget. It had to deal with execs who don’t understand television as a medium making decisions based on metrics that don’t hold up to any inspection whatsoever. The series had to mingle with shareholders and individual animators and writers with contradictory artistic visions.

Speaking of which, lets start with Angel, and I actually agree with some of what Lavendertowne said in the section about him. Hazbin Hotel, for all its successes, is definitely not a perfect show, and a ton of the pacing issues are evident through the characterisation.
Most notably, episode four is one of the show’s best episodes, finally slows down and tells a story about an abusive relationship. It’s horrifying to watch, but you can’t look away. Angel is vulnerable and desperate, his constant flirtatiousness is shown as a façade that he keeps dropping accidentally. Its harrowing and really well written, and Valentino is f*cking terrifying.

For the rest of the series, Angel doesn’t have this depth. It’s established he’s wearing a mask, but because the show doesn’t have time to show you the real him, the mask is all you get.
Yes, this can feel like dodgy characterisation. Media is subjective, that’s kinda the whole point, so while I am more than happy to take what we learn in episode four and use it to imply depth beyond what we see in the rest of the series, not everyone is, and that’s ok.
Moving on to the actual design, I love Lavendertowne’s Angel Dust, although this is mostly because I prefer the more monstrous character designs. I like to draw on horror in my writing, so the uncanny valley is something I am at home in.

I want to draw attention to the difference in shape language. Hazbin Hotel is very cartoony, so it can get away with some truly wild proportions to get the character’s vibe across. For example, Angel is wild and jagged, his asymmetry implies an off balanced nature and his thin limbs imply speed. This guy’s design communicates movement.

Lavendertowne’s style isn’t really equipped to do that, her proportions are more… I hesitate to say “realistic”, so “grounded” will have to do. Instead, she relies on a messy hairstyle to hint at that mental unrest and makes him as thin as she can possibly get without breaking with her style. Then she adds those upwards stripes to emphasise his height and make him look even thinner than he actually is.
This makes Angel look fragile rather than flighty.
Lavendertowne designed Angel twice, once in his performance attire, and once in his informal dress, and we see what she has focused in on.
A series featuring these character designs would prioritise angel’s duality and insecurity. The posing of the first design is closed in, and combined with the oversized coat that he wears like a shield, gives him a defensive stance. This angel would still be flirtatious, you can’t take that away from him, but he would be more guarded as a person.
Meanwhile the performing character design is more open, he wears less and is posed as open and inviting. This angel looks more acrobatic and nimble, but also more vulnerable. There is a correlation implied between the lack of physical defences and a more excessive personality, as if one is compensating for the other.
There is a trade off here. Angel’s original design played into his mafia past with the suit and tie, but Lavendertowne instead positions him as more of the femme fatale, who lounges back and gets the secrets. It’s a different archetype.

Niffty's design I don’t really have many thoughts on. I like the beetle mandibles in the hair and the little caterpillar is cute.
One of Lavendertowne’s criticisms of the series as a whole was that the overall colour was very monotonous. She highlighted the fact that the series is mostly bathed in red, and to show off what she meant, she presents Niffty with some splashes of green and yellow to balance out the hues a bit.

Lavendertowne’s Lucifer design is complicated in my eyes, because its my favourite of the designs, but also the reading of the character that I disagree with the most.
For example, the video states that Lucifer is a neglectful father and that there is a dissonance between his care and his selfishness that doesn’t make sense as a character beat.
So, allow me to argue a different understanding of the character. In my eyes, Lucifer does care deeply about his daughter, but he is truly awful at showing it. He decides to protect her from the hardships that he suffered by not letting her even attempt anything risky. He doesn’t want her to fall, so he won’t risk raising her up and letting her see the sun.

This became neglect, or absence, which Charlie is hurt by, and Alastor uses as a weapon.
Lucifer’s dawning realisation that his behaviours is one of those things that got messed up by the shortened pacing. I would have preferred another episode of getting to know the crew at the hotel and growing to like them, and so having an entire arc in one song wasn’t my favourite part of the series, as beautiful as that song was.
“You didn’t know that when
I tried this all before,
My dreams were too hard to defend.
And in the end
I won’t lose it all again.
Now you’re the only thing worth fighting for.”
Lavendertowne’s design prioritises the trauma of Lucifer, and as a side note, this version of the character would also be voiced by Jeremy Jordan, because that man has range.
But to that point, this is a fundamentally different version of the character. Where the series version has put on a brave face to hide his deep insecurities, the version Lavendertowne presents looks utterly defeated as a person.

This looks like the type of person who wallows in self-pity and who’s redemption arc would take two or three episodes. Lucifer here looks like he spends all of his time sitting on a roof top waxing philosophical and too caught up in his own mourning to notice the distance growing between him and his kids.
Case and point, the makeshift halo that he wears is such a phenomenal design decision. It’s an active character beat that he has tried to replicate his dignity before his fall, showing how he can’t move past it, but it also shows his lack of care. It’s made of string, its for him and him only, it doesn’t have to look right to anyone else.

Lavendertowne’s Lucifer seems like he would be overjoyed to join his daughter at the hotel, and desperately try to reconnect, like in the series, but it would take Husk or even Sir Pentious explaining to him that he was the reason the two fell apart, and breaking down the idea of hope and getting better as a person. It would show off how Charlie’s message has impacted others, and would lean into the slower burn story that these designs seem intended to display.
The cloak is also a cool detail, first up because of the crown on the shoulders which impact the silhouette and the shape language. It makes him look spikier and standoffish, but the broken crown motif is also a personal weakness of mine, so I won’t dwell too much on that for fear of gushing about the history and iconography and two separate fanfics I have written which feature that in their titles alone.
However, the cloak’s main feature is to get across the tone shift between this story and the original. It occurred to me halfway through this that the designs presented in Hazbin Hotel feel like they were designed as costumes first. They are symbolic and referential, with the rule of cool being paramount.

I respect this a lot, but Lavendertowne’s ideas present a grittier story, with outfits seemingly designed with practicality in mind above all else. Here, a character going flying across the city would have majour consequences. Gore and death would be rarer, but more impactful, and as a key part of that, this story would more heavily focus on consequences.
In this case, neither Lucifer or Vaggie will get their wings back in this version of the story. Lavendertowne specified this in her video, explaining that this was because the original undercut the trauma that these two received, and that’s a valid take.
Part of what I respect about Lavendertowne’s design process and formatting of the video was the fact that she presented a reason for her own unenjoyment of the series, and engaged with that criticism to present something that she would prefer. Again, art is subjective, and the video really takes apart preferences and the logic behind them.

Here, Lucifer doesn’t have wings, and instead uses his cloak to mimic the shape, linking back into that conceptual space of being stuck in the past, like his halo.
What this means for the story presented is that the final fight would have to take place within the hotel itself, where the angels cannot fly away and can be engaged with on even ground. I’m envisioning set pieces in the main halls, and staircases, and a moment when Husk turns off the light in a corridor, then cut to Angel’s perspective as he tries to find his friend, only to flick the light back on to see Husk, wounded but still standing, surrounded by half a dozen dead exorcists. I think that would be cool.
Also, the pomegranate sceptre is a neat design, and the open chest is the type of overly dramatic outfit choice that an overly emotional, self-sabotaging mess of a person would make. The type of design that pulls on an edgy, fallen angel, paradise lost style pf nonsense that I whole heartedly approve of.

Lute’s design I like, but it took me some time to get used to.
Part of this is that I genuinely despise the design of the exorcists in the series. I think in concept they are really interesting, especially with the mask, but in practice they just don’t work. I think it’s the colour scheme, they don’t scream “heaven” to me. They appear designed as “righteous crusaders questing for the greater good” and all that hypocritical, I would have preferred if they had their home turf emblazoned on them, like crusaders.
Lavendertowne’s design emphasises the idea of juxtaposition. Lute doesn’t look like a combatant; she doesn’t look dangerous. She looks like a saint. Until you see what she is doing. You notice the sword and the bloodstains on her hands and the combat boots which imply something beneath the façade.

The wings are also an interesting detail that Lavendertowne implements in her designs. One of her criticisms was that the designs of the angels and demons weren’t identifiable as pertaining to one side or the other. While I think that was an important theme in the series, the idea that when push comes to shove, the morality of hell and heaven were almost indifferentiable, I like that Lavendertowne took a different direction with her design.
In the AU, there is a hypocrisy evident in the exorcist designs, and Lavendertowne focused in on how they appear different and present a mask of superiority that is completely undercut by their actions. Hence the wings allow the angels to fly and literally rise above those they deem unworthy, while acting as a visual signifier of alignment.
I picture Lute’s white outfit getting absolutely stained with mud and rubble and blood, and I picture this version of the character as more cordial in conversation, the type of person who thinks being polite makes you correct, only to devolve into wordless screams of rage when she starts losing.

That hypocrisy is exemplified by my favourite part of the design, the headdress. Because first up, iron halos are cool, and the fact that they are the only metal on the design works with the fact that the angels don’t know they can get hurt, but second, this mask doesn’t have eyes.
We could say that there is some magical or technological way of seeing through the mask, maybe there is a screen in there and she’s like iron man with a ton of gizmos and gadgets, or maybe there are little holes or a mesh like an old gladiator helmet that lets her see through.
But visually, this communicates that Lute doesn’t see the world beyond herself. She is blind to change or anything that would challenge her mindset, and has intentionally closed off herself from learning anything new.
It also limits her expression. Sure, her mouth is visible, so she can smile or grimace, but the eyes imply emotion. She’s hiding from you just as much as she is hiding you from herself.

Final Thoughts
In any case, I really like the designs presented here, and I think that exploring how they communicate different ideas from the original based on different design and story preferences and sensibilities was interesting to do. If Lavendertowne releases another video, I might do another follow up.
I want to stress that me liking LavenderTowne's redesigns does not invalidate the show, neither do any criticisms. I mentioned that the series has flaws, but I love it regardless, and it's ok if others didn't.
Once again, I will write fanfiction for this universe if Lavendertowne approves, because I think that it would be an interesting thought experiment. I think the scenes in this version of the story would be longer and more drawn out, instead of the rapid pacing of the original series.

Playing with some Palworld designs
Because apparently translating cartoon critters into my less-cartoony style involves thinking about how they might actually function as real creatures. It's been fun but a little challenging.

Rayhound first because it's my favourite mount at the moment :D I've just gone with a more generic dog face but might look at some more slender snout breeds if I draw it again in the future. I think I need to make the legs a bit shorter too.
I imagined that the horn things on its face would be keratin kinda like rhino horns, and the tail would be hollow/light weight like those really long horned cows that use them for cooling in hot climates??

LOTS of chillet because it's a friend's favourite mount and I've been enjoying experimenting with the design. I used an otter to base the body and a single head design on, but then settled on using a seal for a more rounded head/face in the end. I imagine them to have dense water resistant fur like either of those critters. Had a ball with the paws, took some liberties adding fluff in places. Haven't thought much about the tufty things on the cheeks- are they purely fur or a bit of flesh/organs??

Only done a brief look at daedream. It was surprisingly easy? I combined rabbit and goat/sheep traits. I'll probably play with some solid hooves like on horses later to see how that looks, but I quite like the split hooves. LOVE drawing long flowy hair~
Aaand a bonus digital sketch because the way players ride chillet is one of the dumbest, most unstable looking things I've ever seen 😂

Moi Animation studio animation first episode was the painted lady.
there other eps are Beach/Sokka master/ nightmare and daydreams/ sozin comet part 2 and TSR. Same studio two different art Styles . Aang looks different in TSR compared to the painted lady its not just katara . Moi Also did Part 2 of Sozins Comet they began work in s3 and worked on about 8 episodes in total of atla. while the main studios were DM/JM but the reason katara looks different in TSR/ Part is Moi worked on the eps/ JM the more cartoony studio worked on Part 1/3/4 of sozins comet.
same studio.. believe it or not. they can go to cartoony/realism for more serious episodes

would you believe both aangs are from JM animation? its true its not just katara who changes as people claimed . it seems.. for more serious moments the eyes are smaller and the characters are built more real prob to give more weight to the serious scenes, while for lighthearted ones they prefer to go more cartoony

I feel this scene in Hollow Mind kinda made Belos less interesting by making it seem like he literally didn't care at all about Hunter.

as tbh I find it almost a touch disappointing because I feel it maybe does tow the line of making Belos a bit too much of a one note cartoon villain
( I know its somewhat funny me saying that when he literally is a kids cartoon villain but you get what I mean 😅😅)
I don't have a problem with Belos being so evil that he's willing to kill a kid he raised for defying him but I do kinda have a slight problem with him being so quick to do it and pretty much acting a little moustache twirling about it
like personally I do find it more interesting to think he does have a kind of twisted love for the Grimwalkers in a way ( I mean he'd have no real reason to model them after his brother if he didn't care )
so I would have preferred it if that one moment in Hollow Mind had been changed slightly because like I said I just feel it makes Belos a little bit less interesting by having him be so over the top villainous that he'd disregard someone he raised so quickly while practically laughing in their face
like maybe instead he could have actually tried manipulating Hunter back to him telling him that he only did these things for the greater good and that the old Golden Guards all turned to the dark side and made him kill them
and Belos tries to pull on the heartstrings by reminding him of everything he did for him growing up and saying that Hunter wouldn't betray him like al the others did would he? and when Hunter's still visibly hesitant to believe him
Then Belos after at least making some effort to not give up on him finally decides to kill Hunter and the episode plays out the same.
Like I said I just feel this scene of Belos is a little disappointing because it does make it seem like Belos literally doesn't give a crap about Hunter or any of the Grimwalkers
and that just makes him less interesting imo plus it kinda contradicts the whole point of him making them since the only logical reason he kept making clones of his Brother
is because he does care in a very twisted way hence why he kept trying to recreate his brother albeit a version of him that wouldn't betray him and his cause.
but having him so casually disregard Hunter with literally no care and without even trying to prevent his demise just seemed well cartoony for lack of a better word imo.

Additionally, he dons a second lab coat with slightly exaggerated lapels that he drapes over his shoulders and buttons at the top to look like a wizard cape. He is holding a round-bottom flask. Next to that are narrative doodles of him interacting with Gordon: Gordon asks: "Wait, why're you wearing two lab coats? Are you- you good under all those layers?" Darnold casts a glance over his shoulder at said second lab coat. It is ripped and singed at the base, and its sleeves are tied together behind his back. He casts Gordon a smile and winks: "Why, yes! You can't be too careful in the Mixology department, so it's always good to add on a few more layers. I mean, you should'a seen the last guy. This extra coat was his afterall."
The narrative continues as Gordon stares at him, stuttering: "Wh- what happened to the last guy, Darnold? Gh- Are we safe here??" Darnold rushes to reassure him, moving his index fingers in a circular motion as if rewinding: "Oh! No, no, last time I saw him he was asleep!" He lifts up an arm and looks a little guiltily at the extra lab coat draped over it: "I mean, I feel kinda bad for not asking while he was awake, but I was working with potentially dangerous chemicals and he hadn't complained when I borrowed it, so I'm inclined to believe that everything was okay." Despite his words, the confidence he wears for a split moment while concluding that falls almost immediately as he tenses up, smile in a tight line and eyes screaming. It is clear he does not fully believe the guy had just been asleep but is trying desperately to for his sanity. Gordon grits his teeth awkwardly and looks around to the Science Team for help: "Is…is anyone gonna tell him? Is anyone-?"
In another scenario, the Science Team is battling headcrabs. Gordon is yelling and firing away with his gun-arm, while Dr Coomer takes confident shots next to him with his revolver. Tommy is looking around, alert and gun at the ready, and Bubby is screaming in the background as a headcrab jumps in on him from above. Darnold, disliking real violence, stands at a distance with his back turned and palms over his ears, muttering to himself at rapid fire through a forced smile: "I am okay. I am in my happy place. I am flying kites in a nice green field and I am safe. I am gonna go home- NO! No, I am AT home in fact. And I had my lunch, and dinner, and this morning's breakfast and my stomach is feeling great and I am never working overtime again, no reason. I am leaving work at reasonable hours. I am clocking out at. Reasonable. Hours. And I am feeling very okay and normal because I have my kites and I am going to fly them. The weather is perfectly breezy and the temperature is just right. Everything is alright."
Darnold encounters a Peeper Puppy (AKA a Houndeye) and throws an untested red potion from a conical flask on it in desperation, bracing himself for an attack. The potion, however, causes it to fall asleep instantly, and Darnold sneaks a glance at it in surprise. He looks at the flask in his hand and puts a thoughtful finger to his chin: "Oh! I, uh, I seem to have made a sleeping potion. A-and I was about to drink that too…" He laughs nervously at the thought of what might've happened if he had.

when it comes to determining whether or not something is ai generated ive seen people unironically look at anime and cartoony style art and go "look at this small anatomy mistake that means its ai generated" or "look the shading here isnt 100 percent accurate to how it would look irl no real person would color like this" and its like . well first of all expecting perfect realism out of a style thats inherently unrealistic looking is kinda ridiculous but also . man idk how to tell you this but not everyone is able to (or even wants to) draw things exactly how they look irl. sometimes people just draw like that . details like the ones i mentioned CAN be red flags something was ai generated but i dont think thats the most reliable method to tell with everything

I too am a member of the Taiya-hater club and every episode I question why I'm not dropping this show until they show me scraps of Mira or Agent Shirabe or the Three Idiots, but I think from now on I'll be fastforwarding through new eps just for them. My only sentai are Zenkai and halfway through Donbros so being forced to watch Boonboom Red as the main character is like beibg fed cardboard after a pizza.
Oh man. if your only sentai experience is zenkai and donbros, two very experimental and Not A Typical Sentai sentais, yeah boonboom must hit a real sour note since its a return to basics lol
I personally wouldn't call it bad so far, a solid B+ imo, but Taiya is def the weakest character, and his blandness is only more evident whenever an episode is focused on him
I can suggest some good sentais that are more typical in structure for you to watch in the future:
Gokaiger- the core team is phenomenal here, bursting with personality and incredible chemistry between each of them. this IS an anniversary sentai, meaning past rangers are constantly showing up to be apart of the plot, but you do NOT need to have seen their shows to get the gist and have a fun time. you're following the gokaigers and their character arcs are always the main focus. plus they're aliens (space pirates even) that don't know jackshit abt Earth, so you and them are on the same level of knowledge lol
Idk why folks don't recommend this as a starter sentai more often. it was my first ever sentai and I picked the next sentais I watched based on how entertained I was by a past characters appearance. its how I watched go-onger and carranger (and liveman but I don't wanna talk abt that)
Also Marvelous is best red. this is an objective fact we as a community all agree on, even if he's not our own personal favorite red

Speaking of go-on
Go-onger- the canon, main strength of this team is their stupidity. VERY CARTOONY, heavy on hijinks, light on serious plot (it was written by a veteran kids anime writer and boy can you tell). if you like loud genki kinda assholeish shonen protags than you'll love the red Sosuke. if you don't...perhaps skip this one lol. Sosuke is a biiiig make or break of someone's enjoyment of go-on. the villains are great tho, very team rocket, kinda like the Sanseaters in boonboom
(and its a much better car sentai. Speedor is there all the time. boonboom only has Speedor for one episode. I rest my case)

Zyuohger- if you need an animal sentai under your belt, this is the best one. the red, Yamato, does get more focus than the rest of the team (many more power ups as well) but he's a likeable character played by a guy who can actually act. GREAT VILLAINS, they evolve over time as well and I can't say much w/o spoiling things, but I'll just say Genis caused his own demise
Also I haven't seen donbros but I know the donbros sixth is deranged, so if you need more deranged sixths in your life you should watch zyuoh for Misao

Gekiranger- if you really love serialized story telling and characters growing and changing and all that, I cannot recommend geki enough. in a lot of sentai, the weapons are usually just found or given, which isn't inherently a bad thing but I can see why someone wouldn't care for that. every weapon and power up the gekis get is always earned thru them overcoming some obstacle, literal or figurative, so its that much more rewarding when the new Marketable Touy is used
Also they're kung fu fighting cats. did I mention they're kung fu fighting cats. the red was raised in the woods and literally acts like a feral animal most of the time. he does mellow out over the course of the show, but honestly if someone doesn't like Jan from the jump I don't trust them (he has CRAZY yaois with the main villain Leo btw)

sometimes i get so sad when i think about sonic heroes
the level design is some of the best in the series, both in the fun cartoony sense that fits with the sonic series but also in terms of alternative pathways and creative ideas
the gameplay is also genuinely so much fun and rewarding when you know how to combo the different characters skills
i think if they remade the game or made a new one with a similar team based formula they could have a real banger on their hands, especially if they have more expanded skills (similar to but maybe less op than frontiers) and had different stages per team
((also?? sega could’ve went so fucking hard on the concept of metal not really liking eggman for future games and im forever mad they never did more that that idea))
sonic heroes is definitely one i see get more flak in recent years, which i think is just incredibly unfair to the game since most of its crimes are "voice acting bad, story weird (it's a sonic game guys this ain't new), bugs bad".. which other games have done it MUCH worst than heroes.
i kinda lump heroes in the squad of "modern sonic games that get unfair treatment becuz people are watching youtubers rage at them rather than actually play them theirselves". along with that the bad ports getting in the way. like other than a few things i couuuld complain about, i consider it a fairly decent game, and yea i really wish we got to see more of metal in the big bad role. dude gets absolute crumbs nowadays and is just treated as an occasional boss battle and that's it, i wish we got more of THIS metal in future games..
i absolutely LOVED how corny sonic heroes was at times and it was nice to have another sonic game that was cheesy but still told its story. which is funny when this was right before shadow the hedgehog and sonic 06 came out trying to turn sonic into telling more "serious" stories.
