Mmm thinking abt the engines /human again. My James is so prideful in his appearance and thus presents himself Perfectly but it leaves him covered from the neck down bc Body Issues and thus casual touch does Not look the same for him ans hes so brave about it (lie). If aomeone pulled a glove off then held his hand he'd melt. If someone touched his face he does not want to know the kind of sound he'd make.

James in general is in my brain so much right now because he presents himself as loud and obnoxious and self assured and perfect and Ever So Splendid and yet the façade fails anyway bc everyone who knows him well knows he is not self assured at all. Which would make a hell of a feedback loop because he knows people must know he's a fraud like that but he can't let his guard down because then he really Will be too self-conscious but it's clear it is an act and-

And then the people who don't know him well will either take the façade at face value and go wow that engine is full of himself, how unpleasant, and one way or other, James isolates himself. Because the only thing that'd fix him is sincerity. But he's allergic to it. Ok im normal again.

Your rhetorical questions have lit up my brain lol like what if Rick had met Michonne and Andre first instead of Morgan and Duane? 🤯 But anyway on a separate note, it’s so wild to see Rick and Shane’s first scene and Rick laughing along to Shane’s mysoginistic weird ass rant in light of who he is now. He really was just some emotionally repressed small town guy, And while Lori telling Rick “I wonder if you even care about us” in front of Carl was horrible, I wonder what Rick could’ve done or not done that would make her feel that way? And Shane said women’s problem is they don’t know how to turn off a light switch, to which Rick says part of the problem is he’s the one who’s leaving light switches on; I hate to be missing something that’s probably obvious but what did he mean with that?

this got long because who am i, so under a read more it goes.

maybe i got my rickgirl blinders on and am giving him too much credit but i thought rick was laughing at least somewhat incredulously at shane's speech (he was at the very least shaking his head a lot until the very end) but yes present-day rick would probably not have entertained that quite so much lol. but to kind of go along with that, my interpretation of light switch thing was rick kind of dismissing shane's, as you pointed out, misogynistic joke by saying he's the one with the issue turning off lights, and also to shift the conversation into the Actual Problems he and lori are having. also in retrospect it kinda feels like the show was lowkey already telling us lori and shane were more suited for each other than lori and rick but i could be reading into that. but listen metaphors have a habit of flying right over my (probably) autistic little head so i could also be missing some hidden meaning there.

as for the fight with lori, there's a flashback (i think in season 2?) where lori is talking to a friend about that same fight and she admits that she was the one who was being the asshole and how she got even more pissed off over how even-tempered and reasonable he was in response. from rick's perspective, he said he would try to talk about his feelings only for it to seem like lori didn't actually want to hear them after all. honestly i think they were just fundamentally incompatible, as we saw over and over in seasons 1 and 2. it wasn't anyone's fault, and their fights probably escalated because they didn't even know how to argue the way the other person wanted them to.

and not to constantly compare rick/lori to richonne, but rick similarly almost never yells or gets mean the few times we see him and michonne argue. the couple of times he did in towl were such an anomaly it set off alarm bells for michonne that something was really wrong with him (and also the situation was just objectively insane). but michonne and rick know how to disagree without getting ugly, and she certainly never has to try to provoke him into communicating because they have a fundamental understanding of each other that rick and lori never had. for sure rick learned from his mistakes with lori but i don't think the rick who was with lori was an entirely different person who said horrible things to his wife. he couldn't express himself the way we see he can with michonne because he just didn't have that type of connection with lori. and to be fair, lori didn't feel that with rick either, and again, that's okay. they probably should have just called it quits well before rick got shot. @cantstayawaycani and @jonesywrites go into this far more eloquently than I did here in their very excellent towl season 1 reaction video that you should definitely watch, because it's wonderful from start to finish.

i love the lack of romance in hfjone bcuz not only are none of the main characters protrayed as being involved in any romance or being interested in romantic relationships but NOTHING in the entire show implies that ANY characters are interested in romantic relationships or that ROMANCE AS A CONCEPT EVEN EXISTS IN THEIR WORLD its so funny. like yeah none of the characters at all in the ENTIRE show are in a romantic relationship or shown experiencing romantic attraction but it isn't even implied that romantic relationships are a thing in their world. bryce's mom is the only family member mentioned by his sister and while Charlie has a mom his alleged dad is NEVER mentioned even as a baby. the closest we get is that in a small clip of taylor's info page on airy's computer we see that her parents are divorced but thats it for the entire series. we dont even know if these mfs produce asexually or not THEY MIGHT. Most aromantic world ever created im kinda obsessed. no lgbtq characters but no straight characters either baby!!!

anyway brandina time.

I've rambled before about how I love Dina Caliente and will defend her to the death etc, plus i'm a "dina was michael bachelor's young and questionable trophy wife" truther. I don't think she was ever necessarily a gold digger in a greedy manipulative sense, moreso that she valued the comfort/security found in wealth and Michael was well-off enough to provide that for her in exchange for him having a hot young wife and whatever. He came around the same time that Flamenco died, and Nighat had been dead since she was a kid, so she was entering the adult world functionally alone apart from her twin sister. I think Nina was probably jealous on some level of Dina/Michael, even if to most outsiders that relationship was questionable, because Nina just had her lameass high school boyfriend-situationship who she didn't actually want to be romantically involved with and whatever, but it still was a bit of a wedge to them for me. that's mostly irrelevant though. in turn Dina was totally jealous of Nina having Don in high school. usual sibling rivalry nonsense.

In my timeline, Michael died around the same time that Bella disappeared, so she and Mortimer ended up bonding in grief and kicked off their relationship. yknow still like, bizarre age gap but to me it's not intentionally malicious on either of their parts. BUT I do think that Mortimer as a partner did help her 'mature' in some ways, primarily because he had kids and wasn't as reckless and whatnot as Michael. She never marries Mortimer to me. She'd never be able to really replace Bella to him or his family and knows that. he has the world's angstiest verge-of-teenhood son and cassandra is literally her age. they're not about to see her as a real mom. Their relationship never really gets that deep to me, either. It gives her some time to come into her own and whatnot, be independent, etc.

Dina never went to college in my headcanon, she kinda just immediately married Michael and lived like that for a while, then lived half off his inheritance and maybe a lower-wage job of her own in the culinary industry. So sometime around her mid-to-late 20s, Mortimer also dies because he's so old. obviously that's sad for her again. With him she did have some more chances to sorta figure herself out beyond being a trophy wife, reconsider what's important to her.

MEANWHILE, Brandi was also engaged and married stupidly young. She was a teen mom to me. She and skip had a shotgun wedding, had their kids, Skip wasn't the best husband anyways before died, she went into a horrendous life-ruining grief period and alcoholism. the broke kids had it rough, the social worker breathing down her neck, etc. so she had to like, get sober eventually because Dustin had enough and had to move out and get his own life together before he lost it completely. she started doing yoga or a comparative social activity, introducing her to the Calientes, and they became friends because Brandi is so friendly and nice :) Dina's still with Mortimer, etc, but they're still getting along and Brandi's life is getting together.

Then Mortimer dies, Brandi's life is together enough and the kids are not little and in need of constant care anymore (not that she was great at that stage either but this is not a brandi broke parenting analysis post shhh). She is older than Dina to me by a bit but personal development wise they're now in the same place of "what do I do now". SO naturally they bond over that. and they start kissing about it because surprise. bisexuality.

to Brandi, Dina's nice. she can cook, she's been through grief more times than anyone can count, and is like an expert in "you need to do something fun for yourself" pep talks. to Dina, Brandi's recovery and work on herself + dedication to actually being a better parent is inspirational in a way. she doesn't really care at this point what people think of her, and Dina "professional arm candy" Caliente never really had a partner yet who had basically no expectations for how she came off to other people, giving her the most space she'd ever had to figure out her own life goals and dreams. brandi's all humble and whatever. her kids are annoying as hell but a very interesting change compared to the goth kids. dina's never a mom type to me but she does end up bonding with them all. whatever. yippee

I think after getting together, Dina would probably finally go to college or get a real career for herself otherwise. I think it can go a lot of ways. Both of them can cook. I think it'd be cute for them to open some kind of diner together :) or a similar thing. bake sale lesbians. mutual mid-life coming of age. trying to pick up the pieces of their young adulthoods not really belonging to them in a way that mattered. whatever!

Really, really brief character study for p!Martyn and p!Sausage because it's 4am and my brain won't shut up about pirates okay thanks

Martyn woke from his very fitful sleep to the muffled sound of music coming from downstairs. Confused and somewhat annoyed, he tossed aside the thin yellow blanket in his Kestrels bed. Leaving his room, he could see all of the other doors were open except for one. Grumbling under his breath, he traipsed his way down the stairs ready to chew out whoever had decided to play music in the middle of the night.

When he made it though, he stopped short at the sight of Sausage sitting alone at the barstools. A jukebox across the room was playing some sea shanty, but the man at the bar didn't seem to be listening to it. He was hunched over a half-empty mug with his eyes closed. As Martyn slowly made his way over, he was almost convinced the other man was asleep, had it not been for the way his hand was clenched tightly around the mug handle.

"Uh…Sausage?"

The other man shrieked and jumped, eyes flying wide open and sloshing ale over the floor. He whined at the sight of it, grumbling as he stood to get a mop from the corner. "Look what you made me do, Martyn! Now the floor is all wet…"

"Ah, my bad." Martyn took the mop and quickly helped clean up the mess. It only took a few minutes, and once they were done both of them sat down at the bar again. Sausage let out a heavy sigh, resting his head on the table.

"So, uh…what are you doing awake so late?" Martyn finally asked. Sausage hummed before lifting his head and grinning.

"Drinking myself silly, of course! Isn't it obvious?" He giggled again after saying it, but Martyn could hear the insecurity in his voice.

He raised an eyebrow, staring at him as the music faded out only to restart the same song.

"Don't look at me like that! What, you think I'm lying? Why would I lie?" Sausage demanded, oddly defensive considering Martyn hadn't actually said a word to him.

Martyn shrugged. "I dunno, just seems to me like there's something on your mind."

"The only thing on my mind is coin and ale." Sausage said with a huff, crossing his arms like that sealed the deal. Martyn hummed, getting up to pour two more mugs for them both.

They sat in silence for a while, nothing but the music in the background between them. After Sausage had drained about half of his mug, though, he leaned back in his seat and sighed. "Hey, Martyn. Where did you come from?"

Martyn hesitated for a second. He couldn't exactly tell him he fell from the sky after going through Doc's new strange portal. "I, uh, dunno. Some island nearby. Washed up on shore a few days ago, and now I'm here. You know how it is."

Thankfully, Sausage didn't seem to be in the mood to press him for information. He just hummed, staring up at the ceiling. Mihawk the macaw was sleeping in the nearby windowsill, and Sausage seemed to be watching him very carefully. "I've been on the Isles for a long time, you know."

Martyn nodded, tracing the rim of his mug with a finger. "I kinda assumed."

"I'm not the only one though. Kyle's been here a while, too. And Scott! Oh boy, he's been here since he was just a little bitty baby! But you know, you get to know people when you're here for a while. I have some good friends."

Martyn hummed, unsure where the other man was going with this. But Sausage didn't even seem to realize he was there anymore. He was just talking to the ceiling at this point. "The other day…at that weird island the recruiter sent us to…"

Martyn let out a small, unintelligible, "Oh." That whole incident had been…strange. And eerie. And creepy. And he still hated knowing that that weird little purple thing was running over the Isles somewhere, completely free. He didn't know why the others were letting it go after what they'd seen. If it had been up to him, he'd have tied an anchor to it and dropped it into the sea as soon as it appeared on the Isles.

"I never really talked to Aimsey all that much. They seemed nice, but I mean, they are a Kite, and you know how it is with them…but she'd come over and talk to Guqqie a lot, and the two of them were so close. And Guqqie…" Sausage's voice became very, very small.

Martyn felt awful. Of course, Sausage was worried about his friend. The other Kestrel, Guqqie. Martyn hadn't exactly been fond of her for the little amount of time they'd spoken, but she was a Kestrel, so it made sense that she was probably decently close with Sausage, right? It only made sense he'd be worried about them.

"I…don't know what happened to Aimsey." Martyn murmured, keeping his voice low. Out of respect? He didn't know. Truth was, he didn't really know anything about anything about this place, but he had a feeling he was about to get wrapped up in something very, very bad here. "But didn't those people say they wanted Guqqie for a job? So she'll come back with money, right?"

Sausage shook his head. "That's just it. If it was just a job, she should've been back by now. Something's not right with this. And what if…what if they're actually…gone?"

Martyn's stomach sank. "Gone…gone, as in, like, dead? Dead gone?"

Sausage took a deep breath. "I…I don't know. I'm just…just…" He put his face in his hands and groaned, scrubbing at his face furiously. When he raised his head again, his eyes were red and the fake smile had returned. "Oh, but I'm probably worried over nothing! Aimsey probably just got lost fighting a whole bunch of slimy purple monsters, and Guqqie is probably just so overloaded with coin they have to take more than one trip! Both of them are fine, I'm sure!"

Martyn watched the other man stand up and down the rest of his mug in one big gulp. He giggled as he slid the empty mug across the counter to him. "Don't stay up too late drinking, Martyn! We got another big day of pirating tomorrow! Goodnight!" He watched with narrowed eyes as Sausage practically ran back up the stairs.

In the background, the jukebox began to skip. Martyn got up to take the disc out before it could really start getting under his skin. He set it on the rack alongside the other discs they had, then glanced up at the stairs leading to the upper floor of the Kestrels home. Sausage had clearly been genuinely really worried over the two missing pirates, Aimsey and Guqqie. Martyn had only been here for a few days, and already he knew–this was going to be a difficult one.

Just played Lesson 13. Still don't like Lilith's presence much but DAMN we got World Building and Diavolo characterization- That's pretty good. ( Won't elaborate for spoiler reasons but yeah liked it enough I suppose. )

Kinda been waiting to get some stuff on Diavolo and Barbatos so eager to see what comes next.

my hxh experience is also very confusing bc i started watching it like 2+ years ago at my partners apartment, but then i think we stopped for a bit / we moved around a bit, and kinda just never got back to it. then a while after we moved in with each other wayyyy later we eventually picked it back up and then this time in dub form bc it's easier for me to focus if i dont have to try and read everything quick enough and also see whats happening jfkldshg so it was like
