Hah, yes, the political aspect is definitely what attracts me.

Zaundad is my primary pairing so I read the most fic from there and I read Timebomb occasionally and I don't cross read that much beyond it.

So I encounter JayVik mostly if they are a secondary couple in Zaundads fic. I encounter them as a primary couple mostly if it seems like Zaundads have a significant enough role to pique my interest which means I mostly know them in the form of "Jayce and Viktor travel back in time to fix the Piltover versus Zaun conflict" as that would be the main backdrop where they would meet Vander and Silco. So they feel political to me because I just don't read any "Viktor is a shy student and Jayce is his best friend" or "Viktor is a serial killer and Jayce is a cop" or whatever because they aren't my primary interest.

I find I would totally read CaitVi if I could find political stories on them. Like I would totally read a "Vi and Cait become revolutionaries" or "a reverse AU where Cait is a Zaunite and all the Zaunite characters are Pilties" fic if there's a good one (and I feel like "Silco as Cait's in law" is way underused in fic from what I found so far). But I'm just too lazy to dig through the big pile of CaitVi fics just to identify the ones that would fit my interests.

I would totally read meta on other couples and I do have a passing interest in the various morality debates that CaitVi find themselves in. I also really like Mel meta when it's about her character. But I usually go in through tags like "arcane analysis" so if it's not tagged like that I would probably miss it, because I'm not as interested in just fawning or jokes about couples that aren't my primary ships to go through the other could tags or the general tag.

Gotta say, I feel least connected to JayVik discourse because it's just more likely to not cover topics I'm as interested in (and I personally thought Viktor's connection to Zaun was really superficially handled in the show so most "Viktor as a Zaunite" discourse strikes me as not that believable. I think what the show did with his concept (as a Zaunite who mostly socialized/is friends with Pilties) was just too flimsy for me.

This fandom has three sides

We’ve got the meljayvik, jayvik, meljay, melvik, whatever sky and viktor’s ship name is side

We’ve got the lesbians caitvi, melvika, and whatever ships are being made with Greyson and Felicia and Cassandra

And then we’ve got the timebomb, isha & Jinx, zaundads, Silco & Jinx, vi & Jinx side of the fandom

And the different sides have WILDLY different views of both the show and the fanon of the show

RPF is its own grey area so I'm going to talk about it later, but I need to know about how 'fictional CSA' is causing the same issues. Especially since 'fictional CSA' would cover more than just the lolisho stuff I'd like to assume you're talking about.

I hate to say this, but it WOULD be censorship to take someone's work down. It doesn't matter why. Personally, I don't see why writing about fictional characters in harmful situations is more harmful than any other fiction (That includes murder btw, since some of you become radio silent when other taboos like violence get brought up). Yes, it can be uncomfortable to read and I'm not personally a fan but....that's what the tagging system is for? You don't even have to SEE it if you don't want to, because you can filter it. And if your main complaint is that children can find it, then what, should we get rid of all smut too? After all, children shouldn't be reading that either. Or do you only care about what children read if it's stuff you personally don't like?

Now, I don't think banning this content will lead to all queer content being banned, but I must say, some of this content IS queer. Some of these stories are queer people writing about their own experiences. And those stories need to exist because not every queer relationship is sunshine and rainbows. Some queer people are CSA survivors. Should they not be allowed to talk about their trauma, because you don't want the shotacon (who may or may not also be a CSA survivor) to post their shota rape fic?

And if your response is then "just ban the fetishy stuff", where do you draw the line? Because I could write about a hypersexual CSA rape victim and someone could accuse me of "fetishising" rape and CSA because the child is """"enjoying it"""" (nevermind the fact that it's written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, apparently I need to yell "THIS IS BAD" at the top of my lungs in order for the story to be acceptable. I mean, I would put a disclaimer because I'm nice, but I shouldn't need to tell people what's morally wrong about a child being groomed and abused.)

As for RPF....I mean if it's like Donald Trump x Joe Biden, hell yeah! Also if the CC has given explicit consent. And also crackfics in general.

But obviously things get more complicated when REAL children are now being written about, or if it's an actual ship between two real people. This is not something that even the proship community is unified on. But personally I think writing CSA about real people is abhorrent. There's no "it's a fictional character" because it's not really a fictional character if it represents a single person. A03 doesn't have to take work down, but they could at least...idk...disable people's accounts? I don't think stuff like that should be written without consequences honestly.

And no, I'm not a proshipper. I'm neutralship. I lurk in both proship and antiship spaces in order to find new perspectives and come to a more nuanced opinion. You would think people would guess from my blog name but apparently not I'm not a fan of how (some) proshippers act morally superior over liking problematic stuff, but I will always be anti-censorship and anti-harassment before anything else. We should be promoting media literacy and critical analysis of what we read, not trying to take it all down (or glossing over any issues because "it's fiction")

I completely understand why people who like other horror get annoyed by tma fans who think everything is just like tma. but also a. that is a show that is very explicitly about Everything It Is Possible To Be Scared Of and b. the one thing that I will unequivocally give that show is that is an amazing first horror story. like that show was the thing that made me realize I could even like horror in the first place!!! and a feature of people learning about a new genre is until they find ways to branch out, they're going to think about things in terms of the Other Story Like That They Know. which is annoying, but also, not forever

Agree with a lot of your points here.

By "music video" I meant musical montages there. The thing is a lot of the really juicy parts that were set up by season 1 was brushed off and barely explored in season 2. Season 2 went off on a tangent and to explore certain new paths that really throw people under the bus. Like the Black Rose bit. A lot of people were confused. Mel and Jayce just brushed off because they wanted to explore Jayce and Viktor as well as to prepare people for their next show, Noxus. Was Maddie necessary? Cramming the supposed "juicy parts" together and leaving out stuff that needs to be addressed left by season 1 just leaves a bitter taste in a lot of the fans of season 1's mouths. Like the intro. They absolutely did not have to put Jinx waving the French revolution flag just to have her in season 2 treat it as a joke. Jinx's mental illness magically fixed by a kid? Silco not haunting the narrative? The political issue that was a key foundation of season 1? Dismissed. Jinx and Vi being completely different people in season 2 despite events picking up after season 1 is why more run time wouldn't have fixed season 2.

The website's description of Vi and Jinx before s2's release already felt wrong as well. Yes, I can ignore Christian's words, but he definitely did have some influence on the plot as well, with his rejected pitch and ideas in S1 picked up again in S2. and that's why people are blaming him as one of the writers. Now I blame Netflix as well, I guess.

About Amanda, let me just copy the comment I was referring to earlier from that post: "If anything, I'd say "these writers aren't great with thematic storytelling or understanding the implications of their own writing sometimes," (mind you, I didn't say this either, I just mean that I COULD say that). But honestly, even if I DID say these things, or direct this post at them, it really wouldn't be that far off considering the BS they've said in interviews. Like how fucking in a prison cell apparently is a "reclaiming of trauma" or how Amanda says, WORD FOR WORD, "In the last conversation she and Jinx have, Jinx understands that she is the one standing in the way of Vi, of letting her make her own choices in her own life, and gives her permission to do it."

She didn't say, "Jinx thinks this," she said, "Jinx UNDERSTANDS this." Aka a confirmation that this is the reality. If Jinx is "standing in Vi's way" according to one of the main fucking writers of the series, what does that say to you? (They could've so easily made Jinx realise they Vi could have both and still make their own choices. But no. They're forced apart and Vi is forced to choose unnecessarily. Choosing to save her sister is framed as "the wrong choice". Wow.)

If that's not enough, she also says, "Either way, [Vi and Jinx] would have to be separated to break that cycle." When discussing the "cycle of violence" theme. So basically they can't ever be together again without violence being perpetuated between them- does that not sound like she's saying Vi is better off without Jinx?

This is one key disappointment many has. Does the author know that the tag is "dog shit"? Apparently not. Why control what tags people use? Starting a new tag doesn't mean their valid points would be heard. Calling out stupid opinions are fine, but maybe don't hate on the tag itself? 😅 Also in that link she says "we knew we had 2 seasons to tell that story." Now I don't know if they knew or not. Apparently Christian also insisted on it being 2 seasons. At this point it's hard to know what really went down.

About the awards: yes, Arcane is hella impressive at that. But just based on fairness, why wouldn't season 2 be nominated for best writing again if it's writing is good?? Or is the award to blame for not crediting a sequel just because it's predecessor has already won that category?

Seriously why are some people defending Arcane S2 like their life depended on it. The music was top tier, some parts were good, Fortiche has topped their game. Marvelous job by Fortiche. While acknowledging the good we also must acknowledge the bad just to be real and so Riot can improve upon their future seasons. Incoherent writers, shitty plot, so many loose ends, the lack of showtime, Cait? Caitvi? Vi??? All the random undeveloped characters (this did not happen in s1)? The discontinuation from season 1?? Using parallels just for the sake of it without much meaning? ...

This is like a flip side to defending Rachel Amber all over again... See both sides of the coin people 😪

Horikoshi taking the “leave it up to interpretation” approach and then proceeding to COMPLETELY AVOID ADDRESSING their relationship status is the problem.

Horikoshi failing to tie up that one last loose end for Uraraka’s character arc (not closing off her feelings) is the problem.

Again, I ship IzuOcha. Still do, because I’m stubborn. Would I have liked for them to end up together, even if it was only a somewhat blatant implication that could be handwaved? Obviously. But you know what? Maybe I would be upset if the story went out of its way to explicitly de-confirm any chance of Midoriya and Uraraka being a romantic pairing, but I’d at least respect it and understand it a lot more if the story let Midoriya and Uraraka actually talk about this, or at the very least SHOWED US them talking about this. I’d understand if Uraraka completed her character arc by having a heart to heart with Midoriya and telling him that her feelings have changed, her priorities have changed, and Midoriya understands and they remain good friends. Let’s be real, romance isn’t Horikoshi’s strong suit, despite his many attempts to leave romantic implications throughout the series. I’d completely understand if he just had Midoriya and Uraraka talk and they didn’t end up together, because at least then it still provides both of their characters with closure.

But no, that’s too simple. Let’s just “leave it up to interpretation,” because it clearly wasn’t that important, right?

Well, as many people on the internet have already brought up, if it wasn’t so important, why did you spend so much time putting emphasis on it? Why did you have Uraraka, up until the FINAL WAR, have her crush on Midoriya be a crucial part of her character (it wasn’t her only character trait, mind you, but it was still important)? Why did the penultimate chapter have the class come to comfort Uraraka and tell her that they can talk to her… and then come the next chapter, Uraraka apparently hasn’t done anything regarding her supposed crush on Midoriya? For literal YEARS!?

…see, this isn’t even a shipping problem anymore. This is a character problem.

Horikoshi, for whatever reason, chose not to include a romance for the main character and his supposed love interest. And again, that’s fine, not every story needs to be a romance. Two problems with it here though (well, one problem and an observation):

1) Choosing to not at least address the romantic subplot with a “I think we’re better off as friends” encounter, thus actually concluding the subplot and providing a sense of closure, not only leaves the result feeling underwhelming and frustrating, but also actively damages Uraraka’s character arc. We can have her address the problem that caused people like Toga to exist, but heaven forbid she talks about romance with Midoriya.

2) Despite his supposed aversion to romance, Horikoshi still went out of his way to give Gentle and La Brava wedding rings… he’s willing to establish a side romantic pairing without bringing too much attention to it, but he can’t be bothered to do something similar for the arguable MAIN pairing? It’s the “Togata has special clothes so he doesn’t end up buck naked, but Hagakure’s still gotta go commando” debacle again…

I’ma go ahead and wrap this up ‘cause I don’t wanna keep y’all much longer, but like… being optimistic, this ending was… functional. I’ve got my problems with it, obviously, I don’t think it was BAD bad… but it certainly wasn’t good. It works. Barely. And it’s ‘cause of stuff like this.

Midoriya and Uraraka didn’t need to end up together, truly. All Horikoshi had to do was put the smallest amount of effort and give us something of substance, something with closure. Instead, we got what we got.

I get that he was exhausted and wanted the manga to be over… but that excuse only holds up for so long.

So, I'll be honest, I don't actually have any WIPs I'm intending to do anything with, but I have some oldish abandoned stuff I managed to relocate. It's back from 2021 so in my Untamed era and this bit was specifically set during Fatal Journey*:

Nie Huaisang woke blearily, cold seeping into his clothes from the floor. It was dark and it took several seconds to remember where he was. He could hear the muffled sounds of clanging and voices. As he lifted his head off the ground, they slowly resolved themselves into the clash of swords and yelling. [...] He didn't know what to do. What would his brother do? Xichen-ge? San-ge? He had his flute with him– he could try Cleansing. This was what it was for, right? Before he could doubt himself further, he started playing, pouring all the qi he could muster into the tune. He'd practised for hours the night before, long after San-ge had left, but despite that, he hadn't truly thought then that he'd need to play so soon. Was that so naïve of him? As he watched, Da-ge began to slow in his movements and Nie Huaisang felt himself start to relax. He kept his lips to the flute, trying not to let his relief fool him into making mistakes. Still, he knew he only had to play a little longer and then they could all escape. Him, his brother, his cousin. They could flee far away from the darkness that haunted these halls. And then Nie Zonghui's head hit the floor. He stopped playing.

And then I had this other bit:

He'd messed up. He must have played a wrong note. Maybe he'd misremembered the entire thing? And now Nie Zonghui was dead and his brother - what looked like his brother - was stood, Baxia dripping blood to the floor. [...] The sword was pointed at him. He tried to hold himself steady as he looked down the blade. Tried to blink away the tears that kept escaping without his permission. He could tell he was failing, unable to stop the trembling, but he forced himself to meet the eyes at the other end of the sword. He couldn't die here. He refused to die here. After all, he was the only family his brother had left.

*(it was meant to be part of a short time travel fic where post-canon characters went back not long before NMJ died. It would've had flashbacks to Fatal Journey interspersed with the "present" up until the point at which future NHS tipped off past NHS about the poisoned music. I actually got as far as figuring out where I wanted all the characters to be at the end of it, but I ran out of motivation pretty quickly so there's only this WIP stuff and the intro part written in the end.)

Honestly I really want to be able to side with Solas in dreadwolf. I think it'd be super interesting to play as an elf in Tevinter and be able to just go "yeah actually I think Fen'Harel is right let's tear down that veil." I mean I assume the main conflict will be Solas trying to convince your character to join him, or your character being told they have to try and stop him, and there are not enough games that let you side with the presented "villain" character. I want to see what the world is like with no veil I'm so interested. Also so interested to see what full-on Fen'Harel Solas is like. Is he still as empathetic? Or is he more conniving and distanced from "mortals" like the old stories would have us believe?
