Chapter 2: Family is much more than blood

“ Time is a funny thing, did you know? The future becomes the present and the present becomes the past. Time is always dynamic…" Ladybug looked at her friend, Bunnix, before replying.

"My presence here is already altering our timeline. The more information I have, the greater the change. We know how dangerous messing with the timeline is...."

"That's true. But I also know that sometimes changes are necessary to keep the universe in balance. It was necessary to bring you here today, because if the league of assassins has access or greater knowledge about the Miraculous, the result is much worse. Take care of yourself, mini Bug." Bunnix smiled slightly seeing her friend walk towards the portal, holding her by the shoulder before she left. "Before you go, keep in mind two things: family doesn't depend on blood and you'll lose a lot if you don't go after yours..." Ladybug looked at her not understanding what she was talking about, frowning slightly, but before she could ask what it was about, Bunnix continued "and remember forgiving is not just good for the other person, but for your happiness as well. When you think all is lost, use these two pieces of advice I'm giving you. This will help you to move forward. You have a life, put your happiness ahead a little.”

Marinette woke up startled, trying to orient herself from where she was. She tightened the sheets with her fingers, letting her breathing return to normal, startled at the sound of her Kwami's voice.

" You need to sleep, Marinette." Said a thin voice lying beside her on the bed. She was going to the hospital the next day and was so nervous that just thinking about it, she couldn't close her eyes.

"Easy to say but difficult to do Tikki." She took a deep breath " I'll check some emails and then I'll try to sleep again. I'm nervous, anxious, tired…"

"I know, but it's going to be alright! Don't worry about it."

"Yeah, I really hope so Tikki. We have no way of knowing really ...." she replied as she scanned the emails, stopping at one where the last name caught her attention. It had been more than three days since Peter had given her the name of the boy who was Janet Drake's son, and after a little investigation by her friend (an investigation she is even afraid to ask how it was done), she discovered that there is a chance that she was changed in the hospital." Tikki, is it just a coincidence that my client has the same surname as the boy who could be my brother?" She asked after a while, looking at the little Kwami in front of her.

"Coincidence or fate? Her soul was chosen to be Ladybug. Luck is with you… you just need to know how to use it." The little kwami smiled "You can only know if you ask, don't you think?"

She thought for a few minutes weighing the pros and cons reading and rereading the email in front of her.

Marinette looked at the email again and decided that she needed to at least try. Years ago she stopped trying to understand how the universe worked, accepting the chances that were handed to her. Fate works in different ways. She took a deep breath, sat up comfortably and wrote the guy an email.

Tim sighed heavily as he stared at the scream in front of him. He has always considered himself a person with a high intellect with an ability to understand and correlate data very easily. He has always considered himself a great detective, looking at different types of information, analyzing different situations, and despite his constant ability to stay awake for a long period of time, he hardly ever let anything slip out of his knowledge. However, upon receiving an email from his favorite fashion designer, he was surprised and a little intrigued. How did she know his parents? His curiosity got the better of him when he decided to answer the email and try to understand what that strange question was about. He finished the coffee he was currently drinking, checking the time on the computer in front of him. He had a meeting in an hour and his secretary would surely come to let him know. He read the email again before starting to type.

Marinette could barely contain herself in bed, waiting anxiously for an answer. She decided to get up and make some tea, as she was still within the allowed time to eat before being admitted to the hospital. She set out her cup and a soothing tea while she waited for the water to heat up, when she heard the notification of incoming messages in her cell phone. She picked up, seeing the response and opening the email almost immediately. She poured the water into her cup, taking it to her room, already picking up the computer that was open on her email, formulating a response that wasn't confusing and inappropriate.

I believe that before starting any explanation, a proper presentation should be made. My name is Marinette Dupain - Cheng and although I grew up and lived in Paris all my life, I was born in Gotham.

I haven't met them personally, but I have a rather intriguing question. I hope you understand that what I will share with you is confidential and personal, just like my name. I believe that if it were not for the situation currently presented, I would not be disclosing such information. Therefore, I would like nothing disclosed here to be commented on. I'm trying to believe that with the reputation you have in the business, information that was passed by a close friend of mine, and NDA documentation already signed in advance, we don't have a problem with breaches of confidentiality.

On the day of my birth my parents were traveling and they visited Gotham. On the same day, a little earlier, there was an attack by some villain with hostages which apparently led to a large number of people being hospitalized. I don't particularly have details of what happened, but from what I understand, the hospitals were full and our mothers ended up sharing a room while they were in labor. The two gave birth to girls with dark hair and blue eyes, however of the two girls only one survived. For health reasons and some necessary tests, I ended up discovering that my parents are not my biological parents.

A friend from New York and I started an investigation to find out what happened and that's when I came across your parents' names. I'm sorry if I'm being a bit vague, but all the information I have will be sent to you as an attachment. Understand, I don't want anything from you or your family other than wanting to understand what happened over 20 years ago.

If you don't want to get involved with this situation, I understand. It's a bit complicated and I believe that not everyone involved wants or will try to help me solve this case.

I hope you understand my side. The attached documents can be found at the hospital.

When Tim decided to reply to the message, he didn't expect that, after a few minutes, he would get an answer. When he heard the incoming message signal and read its entire contents, the young CEO nearly fell out of his chair. He opened the submitted documents and, to be sure, looked at the hospital documentation. It took less than 20 minutes for him to confirm that the documentation she was presenting was genuine. It was all right! He had a sister and no one told him. He must have been five, almost six when she was born, but there is no record of her anywhere in the house. His parents wouldn't hide something so important! Tim took a deep breath, squeezing his temples with his fingertips. Was it too much to ask for a late afternoon without any problems?

"Tam? Could you bring me one coffee? I'm trying to sort out some issues and it would really be nice to have a cup at the moment..." He heard the confirmation on the other end of the line and went back to analyzing the information in the documents he received and decided the best start would be to request a DNA test and, if so, look for the nurse who attended to the two families. He was still in disbelief that his own parents had hidden his sister's birth. Although, who he wanted to fool, he knew Jannet and Jack Drake better than anyone and he knew that yes, his parents would hide information like that.

He spent a few minutes thinking about what to do and the implications of what was said. She must have been switched at the hospital and there's a chance she's his sister. But how? Reluctantly, he looked at the email, rereading it completely, until he resolved to respond.

Marinete was already in his bed, in her apartment, lying down and trying to sleep. She was thoughtful looking at the ceiling. She couldn't sleep! She had so much going on at once that she felt lost. Fate always knows where to direct things. Was that what Alix tried to warn about following her family, what she felt and knowing how to forgive?

Marinette stared at the ceiling for a few minutes thinking. She has always considered herself a person with a great ability to understand different situations and assess everyone's side so as not to be unfair. She ran her hands over her face, glancing at the clock on the table beside her bed that read 00:30 in the morning. It had been almost forty minutes since she had sent the last email to the person who could be her brother and she didn't know if she was right to just dump everything to the guy via email. She looked to the side seeing Tikki and Plagg hunched over each other exhaling in frustration until she heard a message beep on her cell phone. She looked at the phone opening the email as soon as she received it.

While I'm ecstatic to know who you really are (believe me, I've been crazy about this information for a while) I'm simultaneously shocked and not knowing what to think. I confess that I was not aware that I had a sister, much less that she apparently passed away. I was very young and I don't remember very well what happened at the time.

I will look for the nurse and try to understand in my own way what is happening. I am as lost as you are and I hope we can understand the facts that led to our present. First, I suggest that we do a DNA test to be sure whether or not we are brothers. Please don't take my words and think it's a matter of mistrust. However, I must emphasize that the question itself is very delicate and it would not be prudent to assume something so important as true.

Really, I'm speechless and still trying to understand everything you told me. Technically, I'm the only family member alive and finding out that I might have a sister is shocking to say the least. I hope you understand my side, because after more than twenty years finding out that my parents had another child and I wasn't even aware of the event is a little worrying.

I await your return so we can try to move forward with the situation.

Tim read the email several times before hitting send. He was sure he couldn't take her word for granted, but he also didn't want to sound rude and simply say he distrusted the person who greatly admired the work. He had or had a sister and it didn't get out of his mind. He started doing a general check on the life of the person who could be his only blood family starting through her social media and then would check her entire history. He wasn't considered one of the best detectives in the world for nothing.

After about twenty minutes of looking at social media, Tim can see that Marinette was a very beautiful woman, she undeniably had her mother's features and, in a way, could say that she would pass for her sister very easily because they looked alike. She had friends in a high social circle, studied for a few months in New York, where she has work contacts. She was undeniably a charismatic person and much loved by people who frequented her social networks and had great admiration and respect for her parents. He smiled slightly at the knowledge that she had a different childhood from his.

Taking a deep breath, he slumped against the chair as he ran his hands through his hair. He saw his secretary enter the room to remind him of the meeting he was supposed to go to and that he had no mind at the moment. He got to his feet, turning off the computer, not hearing the signal of new email arriving on his cell. He walked to the room where he would have the last board meeting of the day.

After getting out of yet another one of the many useless meetings he attended, Tim headed straight home. He would thoroughly research the whole thing, starting with the night of his sister's birth. He quickly left his things in his room, heading straight for the cave, where it would be easier to do research. He had about two hours before the whole family showed up.

According to the death certificate, his sister's name was Mary Hellen Drake. Marinette wasn't such a far cry from Mary. He opened the email again to check the documents Marinette had sent when he realized there was an email he hadn't checked. He opened it immediately, checking that there were two documents attached, opening them in the background as he read her response.

I understand exactly what you mean and, again, I must stress that I have no interest in taking part in anything concerning your family other than knowing everything that has happened in the past. I have no resentment towards your words. Really, I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one with misgivings on the subject.

My parents and I took the DNA test in 2 different laboratories, getting the same results in both. I am attaching the results in case you want to contact the laboratories. Trust me, my head is full of all the information. My parents are devastated, not knowing what happened to their biological daughter and worried about how I'm coping. They're trying to pass themselves off as strong, but I know it's hard. The pain in their eyes is visible and I haven't even had the courage to tell them that I started investigating what happened in the past. In short, they don't know about your parents, the nurse, your sister's death certificate or you.

Regardless of how this whole story will develop, I appreciate your attention and patience in the face of this whole issue. As I said in my initial contact email, I am taking a leave of absence due to illness. I'm going to have surgery tomorrow, so I won't be answering any kind of contact for the next few days. I'm sorry to have to throw all this information at you and just disappear, but I believe that fate must have given my life a little push right now. And who am I to ignore that?

Jokes aside, I hope we can work things out so to speak. As an only child (so far) I must say that while I'm excited about the development of all this, I'm also a whirlwind of positive and negative emotions, but I'll leave it to resolve later...

As soon as he finished reading Tim felt a little lost in a mixture of despair and depression. If she was his sister, she was sick and he didn't even know what it was about. It had been more than two hours since she'd sent the last message, it was dawn in France and he didn't want to risk waking her up. He took a deep breath and decided to compartmentalize the information. Initially, he hacked into the labs' system, seeking her clinical results so he could match them to his DNA. As soon as he finished downloading the data, he left the computer doing the comparison between the data in the background as it would take some time to finish.

As soon as he got the computer working, he looked up her data from the Paris hospital systems and, after a while, was able to find her chart. She was due to go into surgery in a few hours to remove a brain tumor and the extent of her danger was not yet confirmed. He stared at the screen in front of him, as he heard the audible confirmation of data comparison.

Tim saved all the documents he found in a protected folder so that no one would see. In a mixture of nervousness and anxiety, he opened the program checking the genetic markers and the conclusion that indeed Marinette Dupain-Cheng was his biological sister.

Today is the 26th day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we begin a brand-new week together. And yesterday we concluded the book of Genesis and began the book of Exodus which is what we’re journeying through now. So, we met this baby and his name was Moses and we’re going to be getting to know Moses for quite a while, but we were able to make his acquaintance yesterday as a baby in the Nile River in a basket being discovered by Pharaoh's daughter and then raising her…raising him as her own. So, we’ll read from the Evangelical Heritage Version this week. Exodus chapter 2 verse 11 through 3 verse 22.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and as we move into this brand-new week and…and…and look out before us, we take this time as we do most weeks to understand that it's all out in front of us. What this week is going to look like has yet to be written, and it will be written by the choices that we make. So, we invite Your Holy Spirit to come and offer wisdom in the deepest places of our souls and in all of our important decisions that are before us. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Hi, DABber Family this is Cara from Denver and I’m just calling because I really need prayer for faith. I’m distraught, I’m helpless, I’m feeling so completely helpless. I…I just found out that my son Nish, he is homeless, and Albuquerque has court cases. He got arrested in November was released got arrested in December. He has been released. He has a warrant and he has just all these little charges. I…he may or may not have a felony charge, but I mean what this means is he’s stuck there in Albuquerque. I mean he needs to take care of these issues. I pray for someone to come into his life that will help him turn around and…and see God’s love. And I…I…it just seems like everywhere…person I turn to for help has no help available. And, you know, the last time I saw him was in September and I could have somehow maybe grabbed him and made him come back with the. But, you know, I didn’t because he’s his own person, he’s 25 years old and even though I kicked him out three years ago because he was using and I was, you know, trying to be clean, you know, and I have been off drugs for 2 ½ years. So, and I’ve been on the right path and I’ve found Jesus and…and I’m saved and…but I want him to know Jesus and God too and I just really…I can’t think straight. I don’t want to do anything that I shouldn’t do. So, I’m just really…I’ve been sick too...

Hi this is Anonymous. I was cheated on by a man who I was…we were planning on spending the rest of our live with each other. He has PTSD and I’ve come to realize a person like that, he barely can love himself and, how could he love me. And I’m hurt and I’ve questioned a lot about God. And I love him still, God and him, this man. And I just…I question a lot lately about myself, about life. But I know he needs our help. So, I pray for him daily, but I’m so confused about life and about what I’m doing. I’m 37 years old and I, you know, I just…I want a family, I want to be happy and it’s just so hard. I lift up her two children and, yeah, just that she’s expressed that they have walked away from the things they used to know, that she…she has taught them. I pray for her Father that you would give her give her comfort, give her strength just to know that she is your daughter, that you love her, that you…you are still with her, that you love her children. God, I believe that you, yeah, you are drawing people back to you. You are…you are leading people to, yeah, to have second, third, fourth, you know, however many chances Lord. Yeah, to…to realize your goodness and realize that you, that you’re better than all those things, you’re better than tarot cards and the things that her kids are getting into. Just that she called, her son Noah, yeah, is just in a…in a spiritual battle with anxiety attacks and that they were able to face time but, yeah, just that he’s, yeah, unsure Lord about being able to get help and life insurance or just health insurance and all those questions Lord. Just help him to be able to…to still reach out to, still just trust You with those finances and to, yeah, to get help…to…to open himself up to you and to realize that You are greater than anything that could…could cause him that anxiety. And then just real quick, I want to pray for Trusting with the father in South Carolina, just as you talked about so many things going on with your family, just know that I’m praying for you that we’ve got your back. Hi family this is Sally from Massachusetts and I am calling to ask for prayer for all of us who are parents of teenagers. Heavenly Father we need Your help with these know it all teenagers. Father God they are giving us such a difficult time. Lord You have said to us, “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he is…he will not depart from it.” Lord, we need help with those years in between when these kids have jumped off this path without a parachute. Lord, give us wisdom, give us patience, and give us tight lips. And please help us parent these children who just reject anything within hearing distance of us. Lord please guide our teenagers, help them to listen to You somehow and give us the knowledge we need to parents through these difficult years. And we ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Good morning family this is Michelle __ in Central Florida calling to share some prayer requests and praise. First, please pray for my brother. He’s in a legal situation with one of his two children over a child. It’s complicated. Please pray for him. Pray for the whole situation being resolved in a way that brings glory to the Lord. He doesn’t or I shouldn’t say he’s not serving the Lord right now. Also want to pray for ministers and all businesses and also Pelham. I’m wondering how Pelham is doing and out Pelham’s and Anna Rose’s who are struggling to get things where they need to be. So, Father I thank You God for Brian and Jill and thank You for everything You’re doing in our lives. And God help us to show love in places where love is needed. Set our businesses aright Lord God. Let us keep first thing first and do and be led of You, do what pleases You. I pray for the ministry, the ministry of husbands and wives that are in ministry Lord God. Protect their marriages, strengthen them, set their ministries in the right place, in the right order. In the lives of the minister, help them to keep first thing first Lord. God, I thank You for Pelham. I thank You for what You’re doing in his life and the Pelham’s that we know around us Lord God the Anna Rose’s and John, Bob, and Suzie, and Janet, those who are serving You and desire to serve You in a greater way and are putting their lives back together in a way that’s, You know, gonna make them stronger and of better use to You and bring love and joy and fulfillment to their lives and the lives of those around them. Hi, I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible for about 10 years and this is the first time I’ll be calling in and I want to ask for prayer for my nephew who is in college. He’s 22. He only has 10 more weeks to graduate with some kind of bachelors and financial. He was recently diagnosed with lupus. He was losing weight, so the doctor put him on Reglan. He was on it for two months and now he’s having uncontrollable muscle movements, or it looks like part of dyskinesia where his neck is doing a full turn to the right and he has the closing of one eye. He has difficulty walking. He had to scale back of course on his driving. He can’t get real early neurology appointment. My sister flew out there to help him and also to probably disenroll him from college. According to things online, if it is the TARDIS dyskinesia it sounds like it’s irreversible. So, I just ask that if we can pray that he has a full healing from this and for him not to get discouraged or depressed because I know he was crying to his family about what he’s going through. Anyway, thank you.

Hi, my name is Vienna. For issues of safety that’s really all that I would like to disclose about myself. I discovered you guys towards the end of last year when I was facing homelessness. That situation has changed but my life circumstances are extremely complicated and involve a lot of issues, none of which I would like to detail here but I’m in major need of prayer, prayer for miracles. I feel like I have…need to take some serious steps of faith and bigger steps ever…than ever in my life after not speaking to God for quite some time. I began to…the end of last year…found you guys. Despite that I’ve already made some mistakes in this new year but the issues that I’m contending are all massive and large and they involve very complex family court issue, custody change. I’ve got a very malignant and toxic individual just blocks from me that has dominated much of the last few decades of my life, which is half of it. Recovering from a brain injury and in very serious need of a neurologist. Other issues that I’ll be contending with are applying for disability, public assistance type things. I’ve already gone through some career changes and will be taking a step of faith in order to focus on my health versus my work issues…boundaries…but it feels like the Psalms where I’m surrounded on every side and, you know, things that shouldn’t be legal or possible have happened and injustice abounds. And I’m struggling very, very much in my health is well…

TGIWednesday and a clearing for family members

TGIWednesday News

It was strange not being able to don the E Bunny costume that has become an annual tradition for me at our local neighborhood Easter party. Well hopefully when we reach “herd immunity!” It brought up longings and remembrances of my brother, father and now mother who are no longer here but in spirit and I feel their presence in one form or another every day! My brother tends to show up whenever I deal with a client who’s main challenge is addiction. My dad shows up whenever I make best efforts with a client who may be a little too adventurous/think daredevil cliff hanging/survival shows! And of course when I think about or see butterflies, something of beauty or merely when my girlfriend bakes cookies, I am reminded of the tenderness and unconditional love of my mom. There were times throughout the holy week when I felt sadness or loneliness which is not uncommon, but it has now washed past me and turned into a feeling of being grounded, safe and peaceful. We all experience ranges of emotions dealing with family members alive or in Spirit and so we’ll dedicate this month of TGIW newsletters to family.

Miami Wants to Be the Hub for Bitcoin Selling South Florida Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami is selling his city as the world’s cryptocurrency capital. “We want to be on the next wave of innovation,” he told DealBook. To make that happen, Mr. Suarez said he was “refashioning” the city’s “fun in the sun” image. Thanks in part to the mayor’s marketing efforts, tech and finance titans have flocked to Miami during the pandemic. Visions of Bitcoin City. Last month, the Republican mayor suggested Miami pay municipal workers and accept tax payments in Bitcoin, as well as invest city funds in the cryptocurrency. Local officials have agreed to study the proposals. The notion made him popular in the crypto community, advancing his rebranding campaign. His efforts have also won him campaign donations from tech investors, attracted money to cultivate Miami’s burgeoning tech sector and may soon pay a big county bill. The cryptocurrency exchange FTX is seeking naming rights for the city’s N.B.A. arena, currently known as AmericanAirlines Arena. Miami-Dade County took over branding deals in 2018 and is supposed to pay the team $2 million per year, sponsor or no (American’s contract ended in 2019). The FTX agreement is nearly final, pending a Friday vote by county commissioners. “It’s awesome that we’ve attracted a huge cryptocurrency exchange,” Mr. Suarez said, noting that FTX’s bid “complements the brand” that Miami is establishing. It would be the N.B.A.’s first crypto sponsorship of an arena, The Miami Herald notes, but it would also tie a county revenue stream to a relatively young exchange and C.E.O. FTX was founded in 2019 and is run by Samuel Bankman-Fried, a 28-year-old billionaire who was one of the biggest donors to President Biden’s campaign. The tech center exodus and crypto boom converge in Miami. The pandemic prompted people to relocate to Florida from Silicon Valley and New York as Bitcoin gained legitimacy and value. The mayor sees the trends as interrelated, and he is seizing the moment. “People come here and start realizing that there’s way more tech talent than they thought,” he said. All that’s missing is a regulatory scheme, Mr. Suarez said: Lawmakers are modeling Florida’s approach on Wyoming’s crypto policies. Ultimately, the success of the mayor’s effort won’t be apparent until it’s clear that people are making their moves permanent and maintaining their enthusiasm for crypto if — or when? — there is another market downturn. HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING Not so fast, AstraZeneca. American officials said early today that the company may have included “outdated information” from a U.S. clinical trial of its Covid-19 vaccine, providing “an incomplete view” of data that could cast doubt on promising news. President Biden’s next big spending plan begins to take shape. Economic advisers are assembling a $3 trillion package, beginning with a huge infrastructure proposal. Though she lost the Democratic presidential primary, Senator Elizabeth Warren is exerting considerable sway over President Biden’s financial policies, judging by the number of people from her orbit who have been picked to join the administration. But her influence is increasingly being tested, The Times’s Alan Rappeport writes. Ms. Warren has seeded the administration with former staffers, in line with her oft-professed belief that “personnel is policy.” They include Adewale Adeyemo, who’s up for deputy Treasury secretary, and Rohit Chopra, the nominee to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Bharat Ramamurti is already serving as deputy director of the National Economic Council. Ms. Warren is hopeful she’ll ultimately prevail on some issues, like the wealth tax. “It’s easy to implement,” she said. “We just need to sit down and talk about it.” “It’s more a speculative asset that’s essentially a substitute for gold, rather than for the dollar.” — Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Korean battery makers do battle in Georgia The state of Georgia is caught in the middle of an intellectual property dispute between two South Korean manufacturers of batteries for electric vehicles. The International Trade Commission recently ruled in favor of LG Chem in a trade secrets case against SK Innovation, issuing a default judgment based on a problematic absence of documentation. SK says its partially built factory in Georgia is threatened by the decision. The case could “seriously undermine critical progress on the climate crisis,” Sally Yates, former U.S. deputy attorney general, told DealBook. She argues that it’s in the public interest to reverse the I.T.C.’s decision. The commission’s only penalty is exclusion — an order barring infringing products from the U.S. market, although SK can fulfill existing obligations to Ford and VW. Automakers will need lots of batteries for electrical vehicles, and the decision could make American manufacturers less competitive, said Carol Browne, the former Obama administration “climate czar.” President Biden signed an executive order last month aimed at strengthening the domestic supply chain, including for EV batteries, and “one way to guarantee that is domestic production,” Ms. Browne said. “The Georgia plant will not sit idle,” countered LG’s lawyer, David Callahan of Latham & Watkins. LG’s attorneys say SK exaggerates the order’s impact on American manufacturing and minimizes its I.P. violations. SK can “redesign” or settle, they suggested, but in any case “the demand for these batteries ensures that another manufacturer will step in” if it abandons the plant. (The Botox dispute was ultimately settled.) The Biden administration can veto the I.T.C. by early April. Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia has urged the president to do so, citing a 2013 reversal of a ruling in a dispute between Apple and Samsung. (The administration did not respond to a request for comment). Gov. Dear Blog and Facebook friends. Just a note to let you know things are better today than yesterday regarding my Chemo treatment. There are several of you who I do not know who reads my blogs, and I appreciate your support. Some of you have suggested that after a Chemo treatment I might want to give it a day or two to rest before continuing a blog. Getting out a blog is not a problem. It gives me something to do with my idol time. I have always been one who must be doing something are I am not happy. After retiring in 2001 as instrument superintendent at the Arkansas School for the Death, I found myself needing to do something with my idle time. I started serving on several local boards in Conway, Arkansas like the Salvation Army, Rotary Club, fulfilling a fourteen-year board position on the Arkansas History Commission appointed by Governor Mike Huckabee. It was while serving on the History Commission that I became interested in genealogy. That opened my interest of becoming a writer, something that I always wanted to do that I did not have time to do while being a superintendent of schools for thirty-three years. This gave me an opportunity to write and published six novels, and a historical two volume history of CLEBURNE COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE, which took me four years to complete. I also ran for the Conway School Board and was elected two times which gave me 10 years on the school board. I am telling you all this because I am not happy unless I am doing something. That is just how I am. I do appreciate the nice compliments that you give me on my writing. My books have done well for me in the past and hope they continue to do well in the future. 4-29-20: Obadiah’s correspondence with Dent on the two plantations for Dent and John.

Because of the urgency of Dent’s request, I decided to get

together a proposal for both plantations. I enlisted the help of

Alexander and Jack Spearman to help with legal proposals.

Jack’s law firm has experience in drawing up contracts and

knows what the fair market price of land is in Union County.

Upon the completion of their work I will carry an offer to both

Melody Arlington and Janet Saunders for their decision.

In the meanwhile, I sat down and wrote out a lengthy telegram

of what I knew about Mrs. Arlington’s and Mrs. Saunders’

property. I advised John and Dent that I felt the land was very

valuable, and like Three Oaks, both plantations had lots of tall,

virgin pines.

At this point I informed them about what I was hearing

about Daniel Pratt’s intentions on building sawmills in these

areas. I also informed them that Camden already had a larger

sawmill in place and was shipping their lumber by barge up and

down the Ouachita River.

My advice was for them to decide on making an offer on

both plantations. Since the two plantations joined each other,

they could partnership in different ways. Between Mrs. Arlington’s

six hundred acres and Mrs. Saunders five hundred aces,

they would end up with eleven hundred acres. Since the plantations

bordered each other, this would be an ideal situation.

Upon finishing, I went to the telegram office and sent the

telegram. I informed Dent when I received the legal proposals

from Jack Spearman’s law firm, I would mail them a copy. This

negotiation of property was not going to be completed in a matter

of a week. If all parties are interested and can agree, John and

Dent will have to decide to come to El Dorado to

sign the official deeds and sale agreements.

The only thing I worried about was that all parties already

planted their fall crops. How will this play out in the long run,

and what about the slaves?

I would hope that John and Dent will bring their own slaves

with them. I know John’s slaves from my time spent at Twin

Oaks. They were once my slaves. I hated to leave them behind,

but knowing they would be working for my brother, it made

sense to leave them on the plantation to help with harvesting the

crops. I would feel bad if either John or Dent negotiated their

slaves into their selling price. When it comes time to make the

final decision, I will encourage them not to do that.

I decided early on not to share any of my correspondence

with Mother. I do not want to get her hopes up should this fall

through. I have shared this with Penelope, and she is so excited.

Her remarks were, “Obadiah, this will make Catherine one

of the happiest mothers in the world. She will be getting her wish.

She won’t have Sarah and Tanya here, but she will have all

three of her sons right here in Union County.

“I’ve been thinking! Since Jim Crawford, Sarah’s husband,

is Daniel Pratt’s financial officer, he might let him come to El

Dorado to oversee the building and management of those sawmills

you have been talking about. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?”

“You know, Penelope, I’ve been thinking the same thing. We

have lived together long enough that we are beginning to think

alike.”

“Obadiah, you’re just being polite to me!”

“No, I meant what I said as a compliment. You have a good

financial mind. If I were Daniel Pratt, I would send someone like

Jim here to manage those new sawmills.”

Two weeks passed before I got Dent’s answer to my telegram.

His response came in a letter.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The warm voice answering your 800-VISITNC call will gladly mail you the 174-page Official 2018 Travel Guide, a North Carolina road map, or brochures about Civil War sites, AMTRAK connections or wineries. She can also field detailed questions about whitewater rafting, kayaking, ski slopes, fairs, cultural festivals or events in the state’s 100 counties.

She has been trained to handle all variety of inquiries coming to the Visitor Call Center, and is not a fly-by-night phone jockey: She will be there for a while.

The two crews who answer seven incoming lines – including “511” roadside emergency calls – are all inmates of the N.C. Correctional Institution for Women, the largest women’s penitentiary in the state. Some will be here for life.

Proven track record

The 30-acre prison on the southeast outskirts of Raleigh, near Interstate 40, looks like a scruffy, low-slung college laced in cyclone fencing topped with concertina wire. It has a permanent population of about 1,700 inmates, ages 16 to 89, and also processes 200 to 240 women per month who are entering the North Carolina penal system.

Those doing time here wear color-coded uniforms: yellow (pre-trial protected custody), fuchsia (new arrival), teal (minimum security), purple (medium and close-watch security) or burgundy (death row).

In the back of the buzzer-entry administration building, a monitored door leads to a breezeway and a gatehouse where security is tighter than at many international airports – an electronic walk-through and item-basket X-ray, plus wand and pat-down. Prison grounds have inmate-tended lawns and plantings. License plates bearing the state’s “First in Flight” motto are manufactured in one building. But according to Teresa Smith, the call center’s onsite supervisor for the Department of Commerce, her station is the most desirable inmate workplace. “At $1 to $3 per day, it is the best-paying prison job and is in one of the few air-conditioned and carpeted workplaces.“

Those chosen to field calls are screened for education level and people skills. Training in state history and tourism marketing is comprehensive and ongoing. These inmates will work well over their long hauls: All wear purple uniforms.

The program began in the 1980s, when tourism inquiries were handled by state employees or an imperfect computer system. The proposed fix was prison labor. Inmates could learn telemarketing skills, operating costs would be minimal and callers could get desired information from a live person.

The program worked like gangbusters. Interim warden Herachio Haywood gets calls from counterparts in other states about it. ”Some states have tried to launch comparable initiatives,” he says, “but those haven’t worked out.”

The North Carolina model involves unique collaboration between the departments of Commerce, Public Safety and Transportation.

In 2017, the Visitor Call Center answered more than 95,000 calls and fulfilled 769,000 phoned requests for maps and brochures. Four days before Hurricane Florence was scheduled to pummel the Carolina coast, the center expanded its 8-to-8 operating hours for the emergency, handling calls from seaside residents and visitors seeking to flee inland and for others who wanted to cancel or adjust plans and reservations.

Any day, questions that can’t be answered by staffers are referred to state or local agencies most likely to have the requested information. Some calls can be handled in 30 seconds, others take 30 minutes to resolve.

Call and response

The call center itself looks like a low-key telemarketing office, a row of back-to-back computer stations for eight to 10 inmates on one of two shifts. Space for manuals are on shelves above each screen. The walls are covered with iconic North Carolina photos of the Outer Banks, mountain vistas, forests and skyscrapers. The room also holds racks of tourist brochures; at the end of the computer bank is a Kids Corner display of “Flat Stanley” cut-outs and letters from children in places like Salinas, California, or the grade-schoolers in North Pole, Alaska, seeking mailed information.

The phones are incoming-only. The computers are only linked to N.C. Tourism sites and databases, with information updated by in-state tourism groups and agencies. A classroom in the call center double-wide is used for inmate training by the area’s Wake Technical Community College.

Throughout the year, staffers from the state-operated visitor centers come to provide updates. Reps from city, county and regional tourist agencies do the same. An annual highlight for call center workers is the December update by the appreciative northeast North Carolina counties, members of whom always bring a barbecue truck and in turn watch a play that call center inmates stage for them.

Phones are staffed every day except Christmas.

Three inmates were asked to share their insights.

“On a slow day, I might get a dozen calls. Last night, I handled 40 from the Outer Banks,” says Kim. Either way, she says, “I feel like I’m in an office and not in a cage. It’s a real job, and I’m making a difference by helping people.”

She has been working in the call center six years. Her most memorable call: “It was from an elderly lady who said, ‘My husband and I drove down from Ohio and we’re trying to get to Dollywood (in Tennessee), but we’re lost and I don’t know where I am.’ I told her, ‘Just stay on the road and tell me what the next sign is that you see.’ The call took a half hour, but I helped get them where they wanted to go.”

Kim is serving a sentence of about 17 years. If she could go anywhere in North Carolina right now, “I would like to see the Dale Chihuly glass display that’s at the Biltmore (in Asheville). It actually lights up at night.”

Aamber will be working at the call center for two years as of December. “I love to help people, and I get a sense of community with people on the outside,” she says.

It’s also an education. “I’ve learned a lot about the fall leaves. As a kid I didn’t appreciate the fall color and had no clue about the mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway and other places where you can really see it.”

If she could head anywhere, it would be Asheville. “There are buskers, live music and antique shops – a real arts vibe with a Southern twist. I’d also go there for the quiet life, a cabin where I could walk outside and be inspired by the mountains.”

Her sentence ends in 2027. She’s hoping for early release in 4 ½ years.

Janet has worked at the call center for two years, and the open-ended questions are often the hardest to handle. “Those are the ones where the caller might say something like, ‘Give me some dates for when I have a 5-year-old for the weekend. Maybe for a treasure hunt.’”

Some callers, Janet says, over-share – “It’s like taxi cab confessions. We get those a lot of time, like someone saying, ‘My mom is dying in Wilmington. … ‘

“People are not used to talking to a real person, and If I’m able to help in a way, that’s wonderful. It’s giving back to a society we wronged. It’s emotional rehabilitation but also it has a weird irony: I am a prisoner telling people how to travel.”

All in all, “It helps me stay in pace with society. It helps avoid ‘prison brain rot.’ “

There’s a seasonal rhythm to the calls, Janet notes. “In fall, calls are about leaves in Asheville and elsewhere in Western North Carolina. Winter is about renting log cabins and getting away. And right before Christmas, people ask about Santa trains in the mountains. Calls are also localized for out-of-state people returning home, like ‘What will there be to do in Lumberton?’

“Summer might be when we get the highest volume of calls. It’s all about beaches and families scouting university towns in advance of the fall semester.”

Where would she go?

“Onslow County has an island that’s good for shelling – an island with nobody there that has pretty shells. I’d have to count that as a dream place.”

Janet is serving a life sentence.

ASCENDING WITH BRIK.LIAM

As a visionary and soulful melody carrier of the modern R&B world, Brik.liam, the man holding the mysterious red balloon, is a fascinating spirit of many talents. Somewhere in between opening for Lalah Hathaway and splashing onto the iTunes R&B top 10, Brik finds the time to remain humble and loyal to his craft. Brik has amassed a cult following with his seductive covers from his acclaimed Vocal Disc Jockey project and silky records like #theascensionLP. There is a war on love, music, and authenticity and brik.liam continues to ascend the culture while remaining true in the ultimate battle of self exploration and fulfillment. Creativity is boundless and brik.liam is not to be placed in anyone's box. Too busy getting lost in the art, Brik.liam’s artistic journey is still being written and we are thrilled to have a chapter in it.

UC: Could you tell us the meaning and inspiration behind the moniker brik.liam?

BL: So my real name my government name is Jacoby Williams. I knew at some point in time as I was recording music and trying to take it more seriously that I wanted to take on an alter ego. People were so comfortable calling me Jacoby and my other nicknames and I didn't have a personal relationship with them so it felt awkward. I was like let me switch it up. My favorite color is red. I looked up synonyms for the color red because I didn't want the actual word red in my name. I wanted it to have meaning you know, it makes good for interviews and stories. Brik is a synonym for the color red. I made it look unique and added Liam, which comes from my last name which is Williams. So yeah brik.liam.

UC: I know you are a military brat and have lived several places. Tell us a bit about your upbringing. How has being exposed to various cities and countries shaped your artistry? How has it shaped you culturally?

BL: I was originally born in Virginia. My mom got married in ‘95 to my stepdad and we moved to Texas. In 2000, we moved to Germany where I spent 5th grade through high school. It was very different, especially at that time in my life as a pre-teen. Germany is basically where I grew up but not like people think. People ask if I can speak German but it was basically an American community inside of Germany so I was surrounded by other American kids. I didn't have long term friendships or relationships because we always moved. My mom also sheltered me. I spent a lot of time in the house, where my creativity was cultivated in my room playing video games and listening to music and experimenting. It kinda taught me about myself as an individual since I spent a lot of time alone. It also opened me up to being vulnerable to creativity..

UC: #theascensionLP debuted in the top 10 R&B charts on iTunes. Congrats on that! Do you consider charts and numbers important as an artist?

BL: Yes and no. Yes because it meant a lot that people would support me as an independent artist enough to actually chart on iTunes. But I'm also a big believer, regardless of getting a top 10, if you focus on the numbers it will mess you up. I'm also big on mental health and on social media the numbers game continue to grow and develop and change and it will really mess with your mind. If I'm so focused on a top 10 debut then what happens if the next album doesn't get top 10? Or if the people around me are hitting number 1’s and I’m not? I'm grateful when those winning opportunities do happen but I try not to put too much focus on numbers. People deter you from your journey and so many people are deserving but it’s so many politics and ways of getting things. But for sure as an indie artist it's amazing to see that I could record at a home studio, all my little weird ideas and was able to grow as an artist that people supported enough to debut in the top 10.

UC: To piggyback more on what you said as growing as an artist. I watched you perform at college talent shows to becoming brik.liam, to booking shows around the country. You are doing so many things, with a growing fan base of over 17k followers on IG plus chart topping EPs, tell us how do you measure all that growth personally as an artist?

BL: Honestly, I don't consider it enough. Although measuring growth is a way to keep you grounded and kind of a reflection of where you come from, I always knew this was something I wanted to do but I never actually thought it was possible. Somehow I pursued it without stopping. It makes you really really grateful. Thinking about where you started, I remember when I was getting booed at high school talent shows. I'm grateful for this journey and that I stuck with this. A lot of times you want to give up, so to actually see the fruit flourishing from being faithful to the craft, I’m grateful. It makes me feel like I was right in my decisions. It's really cool because I remember when my mom didn't really support my decisions because it didn't make sense to her, and there were other people who were not really understanding. In lieu of all that I still stuck with it and still believed in me and it worked out to a certain degree.

UC: With regard to your mom not providing the support you needed as an artist due to not understanding -- that's a very hard, and personal thing to cope with growing up and I’m sure that may have had some effects on your artistry. You seem to be a very inclusive open book type of artist with your fans. With that being said how much do you factor in feedback, requests, and critiques into your projects?

BL: A critique is one thing but it has to come from a place where you respect it. You have to be careful about letting opinions drive what you do. I don't like the word fans but as far as my supporters go there are a lot of people that have been watching my journey for a long time. They see my heart in my music and that's my motive, my hope is that before I attempt to sing a perfect melody or write a perfect song I hope that people are connected to me on a spiritual level because they will always get it no matter what changes sonically. Because one day I may want to do a country song and I want people to still get it, feel it, and be connected to it whether that's 5 people, 5000, 17,000 or a million it doesn't matter. It's more about the spiritual connection and I've seen that. It's not so much about the quantity of responses but the quality. I've seen people tweet me, and say my album helped them get through heartbreak. I've watched people play my songs and watch their whole moods and facial expressions change. I want to heal people, I want people to want to learn and grow and I want people to feel. I just want to make classic albums and keep that same theme throughout my career because I know if I effect people's lives they'll play my music more over time versus a song that's hot now and you'll never play again. So as far as critics and opinions I try not to let it ruin that sincerity or the authenticity that I want to connect to the people.

UC: Prior to releasing #theascensionLP you've released a few covers. Could you tell us more about the conception behind your Vocal Disc Jockey project which featured some really unique covers?

BL: Oh! Whoaa! You've been listening! I see you guys are paying attention! Thats dope! I’m actually working on volume 2 of that project right now. One thing I enjoy doing is mashing up songs. Most people do covers and record the song identical to how the original records are. For me starting out in church, it puts you in that mode of learning how to flow collectively and creatively put songs together, so with my Vocal Disc Jockey project my idea was to do what I actually do live but put it on record. I also wanted to pick songs people wouldn't really hear me sing normally, like Britney Spears is on there, but you wouldn't mash that with Janet Jackson typically. I wanted to do a lot of songs that are quite bizarre mashed up and connect them through lyrics. I also wanted people to hear things they haven't heard before and research the songs and become fans of the music I'm a fan of already.

UC: That is our favorite project of yours! We thought that concept was super dope, and unique, and it has never been done in that way.

BL: I thought that project was very important. I don't like covers all that much because its been done so much, I’m big on authenticity but I do feel like there's a way to approach covers where it feels more original and different, it gives these same songs we’ve come to know and the same lyrics a different approach where it almost feels like my song because that's how much I’m connected to it.

UC: Not only are you a dope vocalist and composer but also a creative visionary, from your music videos, to your album artwork and IG curation. Could you tell us more about your visual projects past and present?

BL: If I'm being honest, all of it has been very experimental, and last minute decisions. If I curate something on IG, and have an idea in my head 1st, I’ll work backwards to create it and it'll all be done in one day versus planning ahead. I’m big on authenticity so I work it out in that exact moment when it sparks and then becomes a fire. I see things in my head all the time. I didn't go to school for graphic design so it's something I wanted to do and I stuck with it and got better over the years, same as music. I never thought I'd be good enough to do the things visually that I've done. It's more about experimentation and allowing myself to grow and learn in the midst of the experiments.

UC: Could you tell us some of your opinions on the state of R&B music, how do you see the genre evolving? Who do you think are some key players pushing the culture forward?

BL: It’s hard to give an opinion on music. I see music as such an artistic form. It's so subjective. I think it should remain that way. I hate the term “real music”, because there is no such thing as fake music. I think people should be allowed to do them. So many people single out trap artists. Of course there is the hip hop genre and culture that should be respected and held to a high standard but then artist come along and do their thing, you know? Once upon a time hip hop was looked down upon and so was R&B. I do believe it is unfortunate and weird that R&B is used throughout and influences other genres but can't be respected enough to be supported when it comes to people of color but can be admired and in some instances appropriated by so many other artists that aren't Black. But it doesn't mean R&B isn't good. I just love music so if it feels good I connect to it, I vibe with it. As far as R&B goes plenty of my peers are talented people, and I feel like we push the culture forward, there are so many indie/underground people that are pushing it forward nowadays. I love the sounds of R&B as a hybrid. I love the old school R&B and I love listening to Tank, people like that are classic. I also love listening to Emily King, Solange, SZA and Daniel Caesar taking what they know as R&B and fusing it with Gospel, and fusing it with Folk, all these different things. Again I’m big on authenticity and originality so I love the fusion of R&B. The future of R&B doesn't have to sound like the old R&B, although the old sound has a place in the industry. But it's time the culture of R&B moves forward so it can continue to live. Like I said earlier, non people of color are able to carry it more than Black people can but that’s some other politics. Sometimes R&B from Black artists just isn't accepted. But again it's all so very subjective. I hate that R&B artists have to be boxed in, people expect the artist to sound like one thing. Me as a Black male, I don't have to sing about the same stuff other Black artists sing about. I don't have to sound like all the other R&B artists. I remember I went to an Avant and Dru Hill concert and just watching all the different kind of people at the show it all made sense. There are gonna be people out there that prefer a Keyshia Cole over other artists, and vise versa and its okay! I feel like Black people, we get labeled as one dimensional and we really aren't. We are complicated individuals and have layers especially as artists. I wish people were more open to accepting that. I love so many things. I love Jazz, I can listen to it any day. Others may love hip hop. There’s so much judging and picking apart happening. It’s music. Just allow people to live and create. I'm big on supporting what you love regardless of how popular it may be. So many people spend time bashing and they don't support what they claim to love and are mad at the lack of representation. If people supported more than hate then maybe things could be in a better place. I’m a firm believer in shining light on what you like, and simply muting what you don’t.

UC: Being an indie artist isn't easy, there's no major label pushing you. You make it happen on your own. We see you put a lot of time and money into your craft in hopes that it connects with the right audience. What advice would you give to other artists trying to start out and how they could possibly connect people with their art?

BL: My advice for anyone trying to really do this. Simply just do it. Remain patient with yourself. You never know where you will go. We live in an age of instant gratification, people assume people blow up over night and that's not true. Yes people go viral and do any and everything to make it but that's not the process if you really want to last. You have to be committed to your growth. I don't want to blow up tomorrow. I’d rather see myself grow from one stage to the next to the next. You can be big today and nothing tomorrow. Stay patient with your craft and willing to grow. This applies to anything you are doing. Growth is going to be the only thing that keeps you sticking with it.
