The symbolism of food in Till The End Of The Moon: Between survival, love and agency
Food is an important element in different societies and cultures, holding a multitude of symbolic meanings. It not only expresses but also establishes the relationship between people and their environment, and constructs social status and order. In the drama, food is an essential symbol for Tantai Jin's character development and his blossoming relationship with Ye Xiwu/Li Susu. Food is also relevant to Mingye and Sangjiu's love story and Ye Bingchang's fall from grace. Rooted in Chinese eating culture, food in TTEOTM becomes a symbol not only of love but also of agency.

Food as love
Tantan Jin's early life is marked by the absence of both love and food. From birth, he and his maids struggle to survive in the cold. Here he learns that survival is paramount, even if it means sacrificing his dignity. The lack of food and love continues into his early adulthood. When he is offered food, it is often tainted with humiliation or even poison - such as the poisoned moon cakes prepared by Ye Xiwu that eventually lead to their marriage, or the drugged last meal prepared by Yue Yingyue before she plans to murder him.
At the Ye estate, he is excluded from family meals and starved by the servants. It's only when Li Susu witnesses the extent of the abuse that she intervenes - with her own agenda in mind. At first, he is suspicious of her offers of food, but soon warms to her acts of kindness. From this point on, food becomes a symbol of their growing relationship.
This is also reflected in Mingye and Sanjiu. Sanjiu's naive but good-natured character is shown in scenes in which she gleefully eats fruit from the divine garden. The drop of an apple brings the couple closer together, while her feeding and healing of Mingye during his blindness is an expression of their love for each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Li Susu makes sure that Tantai Jin has enough to eat - even during their escape from Tantai Minglang's troops, she offers him fish and fruit. Once reunited after the dream, Tantai Jin kills and cooks a whole flock of geese that have frightened his wife (by his own design). He also gives her sweets later in the palace. On Pianran's advice, Li Susu starts cooking ("crappy") food for him. (She's trying her best, okay? I can't imagine how bad it must taste for a man who ate dirt and rats to stay alive to have to force it down). His love for her is evident in the way he still encourages her to cook and improve, appreciating her cooking attempts as an expression of his affection. It is for this reason that Li Susu's alleged attempt at assassination via food cuts so deeply. Not only does it disrupt the symbolism of love, it also ties into an earlier pattern of betrayal that makes him question the sincerity of everything that has happened in between..
Food as agency
The symbolism of food isn't limited to love. It becomes a marker of agency - or lack thereof. For the longest time, food is out of Tantai Jin's reach because he has no agency in his own life. He depends on the kindness and compassion of others. Once on the throne of Jing, he uses food as a measure of political power, forcing his suspicious officials to share a traditional bowl of soup with him. As king, he wants to alleviate the suffering of his people so that no one else in his country has to endure hunger as he has.
Later, in both instances of Li Susu's imprisonment by Tantai Jin, she refuses to eat - taking back the only agency and power she has left. She only continues to eat after she has devised a plan to extract the evil bone.
Another example of the link between agency and food is Ye Bingchang. As a woman dependent on her family and future husband, she lacks agency in most respects. Cooking and sharing food is one of the empowering acts she can perform. In the first episode, she is seen feeding the poor, one of the few acts of service she can perform that shows her kindness and virtue. However, as the show progresses, she uses food to gain favour (bringing Tantai Jin soup after he rescues her from Sheng), and later poisons the food of both Tantai Jin and her grandmother in revenge. Finally, she takes her own life by eating the poisoned rice Tantai Jin had prepared for her.
Food in the third arc
In the final arc, food becomes less important. It only appears in relation to Chang Jiumin's sect brothers and Shifu, symbolising familial love. It does not appear in the relationship between Chang Jiumin and Li Susu. It's only mentioned once in the dream by Ye Xiwu's family, again as a symbol of familial love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could mean that the food metaphor has transcended Tantai Jin's obsessive love for Ye Xiwu - which has become healthier and now extends to other people around him. Maybe it's because he's grown in his time with the Immortal Sect, or maybe the missing scenes were cut in the final cut.

Actress and Singer Zhang Yingyue makes a rare appliance on TV to discuss the passing of BUCK-TICK's vocalist Sakurai Atsushi and his life as a musician in celebration of what would've been his 58th birthday.
For this episode, Yamashita Kenjiro interviews Zhang in ZIP's studio, alongside them visiting Hua Entertainment's newest office in Tokyo to go through the archives and share behind the scenes work with Sakurai.
During the interview, Zhang wore an all black velvet dress, with the same MIKIMOTO pearl necklace Sakurai wore in his photoshoot for GQ Japan, where she helped styled him. At the time of this photoshoot, Zhang was already appointed as creative director and asked by BUCK-TICK's team to style Sakurai.
"That was the one of the last few time we worked together," Zhang states when asked about the necklace, "The final time we worked was when he asked me to design their last album's cover."
Zhang reflects back at the time she and Sakurai first met in 2011, when her film Buddha Mountain was chosen to screen at Tokyo Film Festival, where she won the best actress award.
"We met through mutual friends and we kept contact until I returned to music in 2018."
At the time, Zhang was beginning her career as an international actress rather than a domestic performer in China. Her friend who's a musician happened to be friends with a few Japanese artists and through a visit at venue where BUCK-TICK performed, is where Zhang and Sakura had their encounter.
Although worlds apart, the two continued to talk and Sakurai offered support when Zhang chose to return to making music.
In 2020, Zhang and Sakurai released two singles together, titled Eve/Spring. The EP charted on Billboard Japan's Top 3 stops for March and was featured in Zhang's concerts. The two would interact again by Zhang appearing on Sakurai's radio show in October to discuss music, a month after she announced the birth of her twins.
"Going on his radio show was the best thing to do at the time," Zhang recalls, "I wanted to ease my way back to the public, but with someone I trusted."
Zhang also shared with Yamashita that Sakurai visited her home a few days after the radio show to meet the newest additions to her family. He has also been present at special events like her and her children's birthdays.
In 2023, Zhang collaborated with BUCK-TICK to design their album cover for IZORA. it would be the last time Zhang and Sakurai would collaborate together.
"It still feels surreal," she says, while looking somber staring at the album cover, "There was an idea B-T wanted me to convey and I helped in that aspect. There's now a whole new meaning to it."
The album cover features doves flying in an infinite, and a spiraling staircase with a watery reflection of the moon at the end. Many fans now interpret the cover as Sakurai's presence forever on this earth, even after death.
Zhang returned to collaborate on BUCK-TICK's Live DVD cover, which matches with IZORA's cover. This cover features the moon phase which Sakurai has passed on.
"I look back at the time I had with him as a friend with a lot of fondness, "Zhang says, "There's not a lot of people in the industry I respect, and he was one of the few I saw as a friend and someone to rely on. I have nothing but good memories of him."
When asked about dating rumors or spectulation of Sakurai's daughter signing under Zhang's Entertainment company by other guests on ZIP, she dismissed them and she would rather focus on what's important than the gossip.
Although Sakurai is no longer with us, Zhang hopes to continue working with BUCK-TICK when the opportunity comes.
"There was a lot I learned from Sakurai-san," Zhang says, "I learned to love better, to live my life in my own terms, to express myself and continue making art to heal myself and everyone around. My hope is that we all can learn from how he lived his life despite the odds being against him. I want nothing but his memory to continue on."

Been missing my DRaja boys lately so how about Chime + “I never want to let go”?
(P.S. Long time no chat! Hello again from me and Kirana 👋🏻)
“Any last words?”
Yingyue knelt at the edge of the river in front of the two men. They had burst into her tea shop demanding information about the last whereabouts of the Dragon Lord, Ruri Kazama. But she had kept her silence through the threats and the lies. Perhaps they thought that tying the sandbags to her hands and feet and placing the heavy boot on her back would make her more compliant. However, hadn’t they done worse to others?
They claimed that they’d found enough evidence not only to find him, but also to implicate her in the trade of illegal goods. She was innocent of course, but didn’t say so. The last thing she wanted to do is reveal too much in a vain attempt to free herself.
She had wanted this so-called demon after all.
The man behind her clucked his tongue impatiently. “My, my… you’re a lot braver than all the criminals we’ve dealt with so far. It’s a real shame.”
Regret? She smiled a little to herself. Regrets would only be his.
“He’s not worthy of your loyalty you know. He’s tossed women like you away before.”
Yingyue closed her eyes. If he had tossed all their lives away, then let her sacrifice be voluntary! She pitched herself forward over the edge of the bridge. The Hydra member who was talking to her grabbed her by her collar but then the sandbags went over and yanked her out of his grasp.
In a fraction of a second, she was able to look back at him as her body twisted in its fall -- reaching over, hand outstretched -- and huffed a laugh. Then she hit the water.
As the shock of the cold wore off, she raised her eyes up to the surface. There, veiled by the trail of bubbles that followed her down, the full moon’s light rippled and broke. Strange how the reflection from above and the vision from below looked so similar.
She saw that moon on the water when she met him. She didn’t know his name of course. They weren’t supposed to meet. A week before that night, she got word that her fiance, a promising business man, had annoyed a competitor by robbing him of most of his lucrative clients.
He was out with those clients, when a hitman burst into the cafe and shot them all dead. Retaliation was set in motion, but her family had little money. The one place they could go for justice, however, demanded their most precious asset for the price. Their own daughter.
She’d overheard her father speaking to someone through the thin paper sliding panel that served as her door. Her love’s killer was going to be cut down as he took his evening walk in his own garden. Yingyue donned the kimono she was supposed to wear at her wedding and the paper umbrella her love had given her and walked into the night.
She arrived at the garden gate and found the lock broken. The wind made it creak so no one noticed when she stepped through it. Her footfalls on the bridge that arched over the large koi pond echoed through the shadows of the cherry trees. There, she caught sight of the moonlight on the still water.
The wind suddenly stopped blowing and the sound of shouts were very nearby. The dying wails of someone’s voice, cut off prematurely in a groan. A man ran to her, gasping, hands dragging the air in front of him, terror in his eyes. She tensed when he approached. His body burst and a shower of blood splashed on her, from top to bottom before he could reach her.
His life left in an instant. He fell flat like a dropped doll. Behind him, someone else stood wearing a simple yukata and sash. He held a blade that ran with that same blood. His dark eyes stared at her coldly under lashes as fine as spider’s silk. The wind shifted the locks of his waist length hair behind him. The moonlight shone on his pale skin.
Demons often disguised themselves as beautiful people to lure in the unwitting. If it was her fate to be taken away by him in this transaction, she wouldn’t mind it.
Yingyue clutched her umbrella. Red droplets fell from its outer edge into the growing pool at her feet. The man in front of her said nothing. So she bowed her head. “Thank you.”
When she looked up again, he passed her by, walking away from the scene without a word, across the bridge, through the gate where she came, when she followed him a bit later, she couldn’t find him.
If she waited, he would come for her. She returned to her house, to her tea shop work but the ones who came were not that man in the night, but those hunting him.
The sandbags dragged her down and hit the muddy bottom. Her lungs began to burn, but panic didn’t set in. For once, her world was quiet and peaceful in the murky, soundless depths.. At rest in the knowledge that her sorrow and loneliness would fade into the dark of death, she closed her eyes and prepared for that deep sleep to overtake her.
Her body spasmed as the urge to breath overtook her desire to die. The choking sensation overwhelmed her. She wanted to breathe but couldn’t. She wanted to cough but couldn’t inhale, yet her chest heaved in uncontrollable attempts.
The drowning only lasted a few moments before she lost all strength. Darkness infringed on her vision, cut through with motes of light, like fireflies popping in and out. Then she felt the embrace.
This secure grasp held her against a solid body. Water rushed by her, pulling at her gown. They rose faster than anyone should have been able to. She clung to him out of instinct. Panic gave way to calm and euphoria. He had rushed in and snatched her out of the water like an eagle.
They broke the surface. He dragged her onto a stony shore. Her breaths were ragged and tore like razor blades in her chest.  Strong hands were peeling the clothes from her body. She quaked so desperately that drops of water were shed from her hair. He clutched her to skin as warm as the sun, pressed her firm there.
Under this steady pressure her mind awoke from its flight and fight. She breathed in deep. The vague sweet scent of tobacco tickled her nose. Her finger tips curled against his bare back, “Don’t let go yet.” She whispered hoarsely.
“I never want to let go.”
She startled, surprised that he spoke. The meaning of his words would sink in later. The mere sound of his voice broke the illusion that he was something otherworldly or a figment of her imagination.  She turned her face into him to warm the tip of her nose, eyes wide in shock.

MDZS headcanons - Madame Lan and Qingheng-jun [PART 1]
So... it happens that I was rewatching the show and I found charming and hilarious how all the people in the town found so many similarities between Lan Wangji and Lan Shizui (when he was Wen Yuan and little and clingy and so so cute that you wanted to put him inside your pocket to protect him), and also, and also I had this need to put in words some ideas about Madame Lan and Qingheng-jun because I think that we only knew a part of the story (the same story that was created by the elders who hated Madame Lan so… Was it all really true?) I cannot imagine Madame Lan or Qingheng-jun telling his sons the real story (they had better things to do as spending time in the first case and meeting them in the second) Also, I’m a sucker for romance in all ways so… here I am xD. Hope you like them :3 (It’s a little long and it will have mistakes because english is not my first language, sorry in advance. Also, this is longer than I have expected so... I will divide it in three parts.)
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]
But first of all, the names. I’m going to give a name to Madame Lan (because only madame lan isn’t enough) and also to Qingheng-jun (whose name I think is only a title). Also, I’m sorry about any mistakes I could make, I don’t know Chinese and I only have access to Google translate and some other online dictionaries.
Madame Lan
Birth name: Zhi Aiyan: 治爱艳
Zhi (治) for “to rule”, but also for “to treat (a disease) Ài (爱) as in love Yàn (艳) as colorful, splendid.
I have searched the meaning in a online dictionary and the combination of (爱) Ài and (艳) yàn has this meaning: plaintive and beautiful or melancholy but gorgeous. And I think it will suit her really well.
Courtesy name:  Lan Yingyue (蓝映月)
Yìng (映) as in to reflect (light), to shine. Yuè (月) as in moon
The name complete with the surname means reflection of the blue moon (and the why of this name... you will find it below)
Qingheng-jun
Birth name: Lán Suān qū (蓝酸曲)
Suān qū (酸曲) means “love song”
But also, thanks to the dictionary; I found that suān (酸) could means “sick at heart; grieved; sore; aching, pedantic; impractical” and that qū (曲) means song or tune.
Courtesy name: Lán Tiáo Hé (蓝调和), because this two characters means harmonious, to mediate, to reconcile, to compromise.
Headcanons
Zhi Aiyan belongs to a small family specialized in medicine and, more concretely, in problems with the golden core. His father is a cultivator that had learned all he knew thanks to his teaching under the wing of the branch of the Wen Clan that cultivates the medicine (the same branch as Wen Qing and Wen Ning). Her mother, on the other hand, was part of the Wen Clan when she was younger and before she married Zhi Aiyan’s father.
Her parents met there when his father was studying and fall in love with her mother, so Zhi Aiyan always wanted a love match like them.
They live in a small town near Yiling, where her father teaches her all about medicine and the art of cultivation with the help of her mother. She is a great student and soon she also made a little name in the cultivation world, destinated for only men and really few women. But, she isn’t the only one they teach, because his father has a few disciples that are also willing to learn.
When Aiyan turned fourteen, she engaged with one of the disciples of his father. She didn’t want to marry at first because she has in mind a lot of things she wanted to do with her life and also thoughs she was too young to marry anybody. Although, with some time and only because it was something her parents wanted for her (and they always wanted the best for their little girl), she learned to appreciate his fiancé, thinking that she has fallen in love with him at the end.
One night, when she was fourteen and she was searching for some medicinal herbs his father needed, she met Young Master Lan, Lan Tiaohe, in a forest near her house. He was badly injured but she helped him with some leafs of wild ginger and cut the blood of the open wound he had. Tiaohe didn’t saw her or had the opportunity to thank her because: first, he fainted because of the pain and second ‘cause she runs away scared when she heard the voices of the other disciples of GusuLan (they where 'harmless' and would take care of the young man, but she couldn't risk being mistaken for the person who had hurt Tiaohe).
Three years later, Aiyan was traveling before her wedding, searching some medicinal herbs to gift to her fiancé the day of. She was outside the city of Gusu when Tiaohe saw her and “fall in love at the first sight”.
But was it really “love at the first sight”? Tiaohe knew he felt a connection, an attraction to the mysterious woman, but he barely knew her. He was a hopeless romantic so love at the first sight sounded great for him.
He tried to talk with her, but the woman disappeared faster than a flicker. When he reaches Cloud Recesses, he found his little brother he told him that he had saw the perfect girl. “Believe me, Qiren, she looked like a goddess with the moonlight at her back illuminating her and her light color hanfu. I haven’t saw anything so beautiful ever.” Lan Qiren thought his brother had lost his mind because who would like to chase girls when you can improve your cultivation?
Aiyan and Tiaohe met some more times, but, although the young master was really handsome, Aiyan was engaged and his intents never gone to far. He would never insult her that way.
With the months passing, they developed a little friendship whatnever they met in night hunts, learning little things about each other.
One day, when Aiyan was seventeen, she heard that GusuLan Sect Leader had died because of an ilness and that his son, Lan Tiaohe, would succeed him as Qingheng-jun. With that news, she wanted to comfort Tiaohe (because she cannot imagine her life without her father), but she wasn't even near Gusu, so it was difficult to do it. Nevertheless, destiny was on her side and she found, one month later, Tiaohe in the forest. Aiyan comforts him when he said her that he was scared that he would mess up as Sect Leader, but her words made him secure again and happy.
A few time later, her parents decided the date of her wedding and she told Qingheng-jun in a letter (one of many). He congratulated her although he was feeling like dying inside. The woman he was in love with was going to be of other man, she was going to smile at him, hug him, kiss him... That man was going to be the most afortunated of all the world.
Lan Qiren was preocupaded for his older brother, because he was melancholic and sad and seems more a living dead that the brother he knew. That woman, because the cause of his problems had to be one, wasn't what she wanted for his brother and he hated her a little each day. “What happenend, xiongzhang?” “Yingyue is going to get married” “Who?” “The goddess of the moon I have talked about like... everyday.”
Lan Qiren had mixed feelings with that confession but said nothing. That ‘Yingyue’... What Qiren didn’t know was that that name had been given by Tiaohe to her so he will be able to talk about her without anyone being able to trace her and put her in danger (being engaged and all that, it would have been a scandal to talk about Aiyan using her birth name).
The night before the wedding, while Aiyan and his father were in a night hunt, having a last bonding time before she was gone, they fell in a trap. She asked for help of the group of disciples from the GusuLan Sect that were hunting in the forest but, as the monster they were fighting was too powerfull, the elder that was guideing the group left they at their own luck, saving also his disciples. Aiyan’s father died before her eyes.
Aiyan and her mother cancelled the wedding because they were mourning the loss of a father and a husband, respectly. Aiyan and her mother cancelled the wedding because they were mourning the loss of a father and a husband, respectively, and it wasn't time for celebrations. Now, they were all alone in the world.
Aiyan searched his fiancé for comfort, thinking he was going to be with her and her mother in this difficult moments. But the reality was different. She found that her fiancé not only has orchested the death of her father, but also he was aiming to take control over the medical information for selling it.
Aiyan was miserable. She couldn’t conceive that she had been deceived for so long by her fiancé, who had put his own ambition ahead of something else as the health of the people, wishing to keep the medical writings of the Aiyan's family.
Qingheng-jun, for his part, did nothing but talk Qiren about Aiyan, the feats he had heard from her, about how proud, strong and independent she was. A free spirit. The elders heard him one night and weren’t happy about it ‘cause they were preparing the engagement of Qingheng-jun.
Aiyan, devastated, searched revenge, first against her fiancé (whom she managed to drive him away) and, later, against the elder of the Lan clan, although she knew that it would not be so easy to reach the second.
She investigated on the outskirts of the city and was sure she would get him ambushed, however the one she finds is Qingheng-jun. Aiyan, hurt, shouted her that their friendship meant nothing for him, that his clan believed themselves superior just because they belonged to a large sect and that any life that was not their own was less than nothing.
Qingheng-jun wasn’t understanding anything and asked her to please explain to him, but Aiyan was so angry that she tried to attack him with her sword, Bichen. She just had to avenge her father, even if that wasn't going to bring him back. Qingheng-jun gently stopped her and tried to make her reason in a soft voice.
But the same elder who had let her father die in that night hunt, had followed Qingheng-jun so that he wouldn’t commit any madness, seeing the girl and misinterpreting the whole situation (Aiyan was crying in Qingheng-jun's arms).
After a heated discussion, Aiyan shouted all her doubts at the elder (Why didn't he help her father? Why was he so close to her fiancé? What did he get out of all that?) And Qingheng-jun asked his master to please clarify all that.
When the eldest refused to tell her absolutely anything, not wanting to know anything about an opportunistic and dirty woman who only wanted to climb and gain a power position by taking advantage of Qingheng-jun's good feelings, Aiyan launched her into attacking him with her sword, hoping that way she received some more answers, achieving nothing. Just a few wounds that she would have to deal with as soon as she was alone.
Qingheng-jun tried to stop them, calming Aiyan enough to stop her attacks, but his master demanded that, for the sake of the clan, he get away from that bad woman and return to have the upright life that was expected of him, a person of his high position. The man rushed to attack her and, after a few defensive movements with her sword, Bichen pierced, mortally, the body of the elder Lan, who cursed her before falling to the ground and throwing at the air a warning signal.
Aiyan was completely paralyzed without knowing what to do while Qingheng-jun felt his whole world breaking. A disciple who had come by the signal, witnessed the scene and fled to raise the alarm.
Qingheng-jun takes out a small sack with wild ginger leaves and tries to keep his master alive, panicking.
"I ... I did not ..." Aiyan, who never killed people but heal them, was so scared that she couldn’t even run away even if Qinghe-jun was begging her. This was the worst situation he could have ever imagined. He couldn't lose his master and the woman he loved in the same night, it was too much for him. The man had been a second father to him, but Aiyan... She was the woman of his life, the chosen one, the woman for what he knew he would leave everything behind, just as the founder of his sect, Lan An, had done. Qingheng-jun grabbed Aiyan's hand and fled as fast as he could as soon as he heard the rest of the disciples arrive at the alarm voice.
When they were far enough apart, Qinghe-jun spoke to Aiyan and asked her to run away for her life. He could bear not seeing her again as long as she was safe and sound, somewhere in this vast world. He knew that the rest of the clans would persecute her if the elders of GusuLan stipulated that she was a dangerous criminal. But Aiyan couldn't do that. She couldn't leave her mother alone. She had already suffered a lot with everything that had happened.
"I don't mind receiving the punishment. I know what I've done." "It was in self-defense!" "They won't see it that way, you know that." "A-Yan, please." "Sorry, Suanqu."
Then, Qingheng-jun, after cursing slightly, stared at her for several seconds, confident, as wonderful as the night when he first saw her, and told her the only solution he had been able to come up with. It wasn't the brightest idea, but it would keep her and her mother safe. Aiyan didn't understand at first, repeating the bows until she saw what it meant, stopping before the third. And she refused, but Qingheng-jun pleaded her that it was the only way to save them both.
"No!" "It’s the only way!" "The only solution? Let me be punished! I killed a man!" "I can't lose you, Aiyan! Not you... Please..."
As Qingheng-jun tried to convince her, they both heard the footsteps and voices of the rest of the disciples. With one last pleading look, Qinghe-jun removed the ribbon from his forehead and wound it around her wrist, glancing at his sectmates as they reached them, led by other elders and her younger brother Qiren.
“What’s the meaning of this?” “It’s just what it’s seems.” “Xiongzhang, please, come with us.” “I can’t. Not without her.” “She is an assassin!” “No. She is my wife.

yingyue named her sword  月光  (yuèguāng/moonlight) mostly because she sneaks out a lot at night and challenges other troublemakers just like herself in the bright light of the moon, thus the light reflecting on the blade of the sword, she named it after the moon. it’s also a hint to her name.

Zhang Yingyue’s YEAR OF THE RABBIT Trends on the Internet with Unreleased Songs
Tumblr media
Shortly after the actress, singer and producer announced her retirement from music, Zhang Yingyue then announced and released a music gift box compiling her recent catalogue of albums and singles, and with a new EP of unreleased tracks removed or never finalized into final songs. The reception is overwhelmingly positive, however another side to the response is the controversy surrounding subjects of infidelity and power play in the industry Zhang may had self admitted to.
For nearly three years, it’s been long rumored that Zhang took part in cheating after actor and ex fiancé Li Jianguo had cheated on her multiple times and had two relationships while engaged. In the newly released, unreleased track Jinlian, Zhang seemingly admits to searching for another love while engaged to a bad man. The lyrics discuss sleeping with her close friend, who was in a relationship at the time, to then abandoning their affair for another man. The song clearly states that they both so unhappy with their relationships and that they had each other. She compares their affair to the story of the 2000 film In The Mood For Love. However, Zhang left him for good to leave behind her old life, to enter her new life with her current husband. Netizens recall the rumors of a secret affair going on between Zhang and Taiwanese rock musician and Blood Moon’s frontman, Huang Junjie (Luca Huang). The then deleted Instagram Live and article that addressed this alleged affair by Huang’s partner began to pick up conversation, leading to internet users to wonder if Zhang shut down this story so then she could profit off of it. Some netizens had strong opinions and called Zhang a hypocrite for silencing a person over her bad behavior. However, it was soon discovered the woman in question was discovered to had cheated on her husband for over three years, which resulted into their divorce, finalized last year.
The following tracks that caused discussion among fans and netizens were Killer and Millennium Actress. Killer continues on the storyline from Jinlian, except it explicitly addresses Li Jianguo’s serial cheating and alleged abuse. Zhang calls him a “killer” of her dreams, career and her self esteem as an actress, and blames him for making the entire film industry turn against her, despite being the victim. Towards the end of the song, Zhang states she will take matters into her own hands and kill him off before he does. Then Millennium Actress concludes the series of events that have recently occurred.
Millennium Actress is a reference to the animated Japanese film that Zhang once sited as a source of inspiration. She takes this source material, and turns it into its own identity. While Zhang reflects her own career as an international actress with many awards and accolades throughout her career, she decides to leave that life behind to become something bigger and make the entire film industry her identity. Last year, it was rumored that her family from both her mother and father’s sides, and her in-laws are monopolizing the film industry by opening entertainment companies and slowly buying shares into well established studios. There isn’t much evidence to back up the rumor, but it’s clearly an aspiration Zhang desires. She desires control and money to take back the power and status she lost. Fans speculate that it’s a scrapped single meant to debut in 2020, as it was the year Zhang look a major backseat from public appearances and participating in film roles. Netizens have concluded for themselves that Zhang has already achieved this aspiration, due to the expansion of Flower Moon Entertainment (formally ZYY Studio) and being declared a billionaire by FORBES. Besides aspiring to take ownership of the film industry, Zhang seemingly calls out the actresses who blatantly take credit for the many opportunities she has created for other actresses. Zhang addresses the fact that there are many actresses, but none will be a star like her, and that her rise to fame and cultural impact is of her own making.
Netizens have called Millennium Actress a vanity song and some have decided to lose sympathy over Zhang’s situation. Some have concluded that Zhang has climbed the social ladder as an act of revenge for Li Jianguo derailing her career and called YEAR OF THE RABBIT an audacious project for Zhang to brag. While others and fans see this compilation as a work of art and took whatever Zhang sings about with a grain of salt, and sees it as an extension of Zhang’s I, Persona album.
Since the release of YEAR OF THE RABBIT, Zhang Yingyue has not addressed any of the cheating allegations, nor anything regarding her turmoil relationship with Li Jianguo. Some actresses like Zanilia Lau seemingly responded to track Millennium Actress with “I’m on my own path. Don’t compare to me.” Although Lau has been accused of copying other actresses’ looks and mannerisms for her own gain, and even went on to date Will Feng when it has been long rumored that Feng and Zhang have dated in the past. Netizens openly mocked Lau’s post in the comments and called out her own hypocrisy.
Despite the critical reception, YEAR OF THE RABBIt earned its first place in music charts in China, Japan and other countries in Asia. Zhang was last seen visiting Qingdao and is expected to attend Berlin International Film Festival for her new film Green Night.

"Maybe," he echoed in confirmation, ignoring her pout. He could not say with confidence that he would have definitely responded to her call--there was always, logically, the chance that he had been asleep and missed it, because sometimes his body did succumb to exhaustion now and then.
So if he never responded, then that would make him a liar? While literally true, he offered an alternative. "I don't lie."
His words were dry, but also honest. And perhaps it was unbelievable to hear anyone claim they didn't lie--because wasn't that a natural, human thing to do? To bend the truth a little when the moment suited them? And yet here Vitas was, claiming he was always honest. 'Never' was a promise, and for him to never respond to her was a promise he could not keep. The driver scoffed a bit in disbelief and Vitas ignored it. Oh, oops, that minor distraction had nearly caused him to miss a turn, prompting him to tap his brakes quickly and make the turn just a bit faster than may have been comfortable. This, however, elicited a sharp glance from Vitas to ensure their chauffeur was indeed watching the road--which caused the driver to experience a chill up his spine when he caught those cold eyes in the rearview mirror--Vitas then returned his attention to watching Jiang Yingyue's reflection in the window.
Was he saying he wanted her? Again, he took it literally, and he had even parted his lips to speak again when she continued to talk about their possible fated connection. He glanced to the Yao Guai apartments as they pulled onto the front drive, the car moving to park before the entrance, the speed bumps jostling the vehicle a bit, but Vitas did not seem to care. "The moon is out tonight. You are welcome to see for yourself," he suggested as the car came to a stop, unclicking his seatbelt and climbing out, closing the door behind him...
...only to round the car and open her door for her, waiting patiently for this giggling drunk woman to get out on her own accord.
"Maybe?" She whined out with another pout. Though, it did not linger for too long on her visage. Vitas had potential. With him not rejecting her text message and leaving himself open to talking to her late at night, she did feel quite pleased that she was at least warranted this attention. While slim, she would take would she could get from the cold wall beside her. "Now, I guess I will test that theory more often. And now, if you never respond, that makes you a liar!" She boasts successfully, even if though she soon fell into giggles. Yingyue most definitely was not going to go through such lengths.
Leaning toward him, another huff left her lips as the seat belt locked on her, preventing her from even getting close to breaking his bubble. Even with another slight bump, she did not move, even if she did wince a bit. The movement threatened to make her a bit dizzy. Was the driver distracted?
Warming back up, she grinned as she looked back to him. "So, you are saying to want me?" She purred as she again left out important information. Wiggling slightly in her seat as another giggle threatened to break free, her attention stayed fully on Vitas. By now, she had forgotten of the nosey taxi driver. "How interesting. We must be fated then. I wonder what they have planned for us. Best friends? Friends? Acquaintances? Future coworkers? Soulmates?" Yingyue looked at the other, not moving other than the soft sway of the seatbelt.
Vitas maintained her attention until another bump on the road shook her frame, though thankfully they had been at a slower speed. Still, the demigoddess's joy quickly shifted to an annoyance. Her gaze shot up to the driver before it went back to Vitas, as if expecting him to say something or to scold the driver.

((placeholder names oh god these are going to suck to figure out
Tiger: 白王 [Baiwang] Literally White King, maybe he's called White for short. Not a fan of this one to be honest. I need to ruminate on this one.
Tortoise: 北方 [Beifang] This quite literally is the word for North and honestly? I don't mind this one too much. North is a cool name in English too.
Callisto: Mmmmm. Okay this one is tricky bc the Fenghuang (legendary Phoenix) and Zhuque (Vermilion Bird of the South [Four Auspicious Beasts]) are not really the same creature despite the similarities. Maybe 美蔷 [Meiqiang] (beautiful rose) or 蔷雀 [Qiangque] (Rose bird)? I don't know how those sound as names though I'll have to ask my mom shdjskgksg. They're also a very far cry from Callisto's original basis which means I'll have to figure out a proper English name for her as well. I definitely want her name associated with the color red, though.
Also, here are the proper names for Nova and Moon, for those who are curious:
Nova: 关阳 [Guanyang] The first half of the name is inspired by the legendary and deified general Guan Yu and taken from the word guanxin, which means to care for someone, as a representation of his noble and protective demeanor. I do want to note that I use the modern/simplified version of the character, not the traditional character that is used in Guan Yu's name (and in Taiwan!). This is super important sjfjskgkddjfshg. The other half of his name is the positive particle that is also used in words relating to sun/sunlight. Together this name could suggest the meaning of "noble sun" or "caring/concerned sun," though that is definitely not an accurate translation and sounds weird when you try to think of it as more than a name tbh. Some names are just names and Guanyang is a good one. Very masculine lmao.
Moon: 映月 [Yingyue] This one is a direct contrast to Nova's. While also archaic/very traditional, it's a very beautiful name that holds characters in the words "reflect" and "moon." Moon's name in Chinese means "reflection of the moon," a beloved trope in Chinese songs, literature, and general culture that touch upon nostalgia, love, and the serenity of the moonlight-on-the-lake aesthetic. Her name was originally 小月 [Xiaoyue] which means "Little Moon," and while it's a viable name it's also... childish? "小" plus another character in a name is commonly used as a diminutive form, the way Mishka is a diminutive form of Mikhail. It didn't reflect (ha) Moon the way I wanted it to. Hence, with a lot of research and consulting with my beloved mom, I came up with Yingyue.
And there you have it! Names go brrr))
((i've been wanting to give Moon's brother Nova proper attention and maybe add more Robot Masters to their line? I really do want to touch upon Chinese myths more. I'll maybe draw Nova's design and come up with some concepts for the other two in mind. All I know for sure is that one is based on the White Tiger of the West and the other is the Black Tortoise of the North.
For those who may recognize these names, yes!!! Moon's line is based on the Four Auspicious Beasts and other very important Chinese myths. Moon stands apart from the others as her inspiration is from Chang'e, the lady of the moon.
Nova is a little weird because while he is most definitely designed with the Long in mind, he doesn't quite take from the Azure Dragon's part of the Four Auspicious Beasts. Rather, he's based on the long/fenghuang dynamic in relation to yinyang (as is Moon!!!), where the dragon, as the representation of masulinity and the emperor, can be associated with the sun and brightness, rather than with rain and weather as is commonly associated with most Long. Following this tangent, the phoenix represents femininity/the empress, which in terms of yinyang can also be associated darkness, wetness and the moon. This was originally Moon's half, but that's clearly changed now.
Since Moon is no longer the phoenix/bird/fenghuang in her family, I'm thinking of providing her with a sister to fill that role. I did make a sister for her, Callisto, but I may redesign her and change her name with this in mind. I dunno yet))
