I think it really depends on if you have any attachment to your ethnic origins whether Americans claim that or not. It's actually kinda complex and confusing. I do think it's appropriate to say "Irish-American" but I can see why that is not the case in the historical context.

Until the past seventy years, it was common for Americans to marry within ethnic communities. My mom is a 3rd generation Polish-American. Many family members she knew growing up spoke Polish. My paternal grandmother's family was all Irish-catholic. It's a relatively new thing for that not to be the norm.

For these communities, they still strongly saw themselves as that ethnicity first, American second and I think there was a genuine fear in losing that identity. For the Irish, especially I think given the history of the British trying to systemically wipe them out. Which I think is why many Americans say "Irish" and not "Irish American."

For many there are family traditions that originate from our ethnic backgrounds, bastardized as they may be. Even if it's from five generations back, we still want to acknowledge those who came before us and appreciate their heritage.

There are reasons why Americans differentiate in that way, because within the country, they run across other Americans from different backgrounds which affects what terms of endearment their grandparents are called by or what foods they had for dinner growing up.

I think when Americans meet someone who is from their immigrant heritage, to them it's like meeting a very distant family relative. You don't know them at all but you're happy just meeting them because they share a connection to you, however small it may be.

Most Americans are attempting to be well meaning, very "he's a little confused but he's got the spirit" energy.

But there are of course the staunchly obstinate Americans who don't understand why people might find it annoying or disrespectful to claim to be "Irish" or "Italian" despite not even speaking the language or being born there.

So, a thought was sparked. What if Pidge was a witch from Earth but thrown into space as per usual. So now she's balancing being a paladin and being a witch. Lance already figured out she was a girl (at first the others, like canon, assumed male for her, but they figure it out, not that she actually hides this part in this AU), but he was a little off. He thought she was a lesbian. I wonder what witchy things Pidge did that made Lance assume she was a lesbian instead. At least he was accepting of the potential lesbianness of Pidge. Once the shock wears off, he'll be accepting of her being a witch, too.

Honestly? It'd be need to see a witch fight between her and Haggar. Gotta love witches.

before the election i told myself if he wins, i’ll come out to my friends and family as nonbinary. just to have SOMETHING good come of it, you know? but i haven’t come out yet. i don’t think anyone will react badly and it’s not like im requesting a full pronoun change, just adding another option. not like requesting a full pronoun change is a bad thing but i acknowledge it is harder to come out when you’re announcing/requesting a bigger change, so theoretically this should be easier… you know what i mean? but idk. it’s just weird. i don’t want the attention necessarily, i just want ppl to know and also i want to do it to spite the haters. if that makes sense. but anyway i have to come out to my parents first bc they can’t find out on social media, that’s not fair to the kind of relationship we have. but blech it just makes me feel cringey idk why. they’d be supportive! and they probably already know! it’s just that sincerity makes me want to throw myself in a river.

hands down the funniest character arc in my family is my mom going from being actively transphobic to being so chill about me not being a girl anymore that the other day when my brother called her while we were driving home from an event and he was like "I have your daughter in the car" her immediate response was "I have a daughter???"

genuine confusion, she had no idea what he was talking about, it took a solid 30 seconds before she figured it out and was like "OH, you mean you have a Rowan in the car?"

could not have planned it better, my brother was so caught off guard that he didn't misgender me for the rest of my visit (or at least not while I was within earshot) and my mom and I had a good laugh about it afterwards
