A lot of people used the Archive Reader app to access stories on Archive of Our Own, and have been upset that the app is now charging to read longer than an hour a day. AO3 (and its parent organization, the OTW) has made it extremely clear in recent days that this app is unofficial and that there *is* no official app. They encourage people to use the website.

However, there are MANY reasons you might want an app, and in a bunch of those cases, there are ways to do those things without having to provide your login information to a random person running an app. Here is a round-up of solutions to the most common reasons I've seen people give for wanting an app instead of the plain AO3 website.

These solutions are based on the following assumptions:

You know what Archive of Our Own is

You often or primarily access it through a mobile device running iOS or Android

You understand what a browser is

You understand what a browser bookmark is

You understand what a site skin is

I need to be able to change the text size in downloaded stories.

My personal recommendation: Don't download in PDF format. All the other formats you can download in can scale the text size up and down, assuming you open the work in the correct app. For me, I download works in EPUB format and read them on the built-in Books app on my iPhone. I hear good things about Moon Reader on Android as well.

I need to be able to replace Y/N in fics with an actual name.

This is really mostly a browser error--Firefox on iOS does this to me A LOT. Your best bet is to download the work and read it in an ereader app. A lot of people also will make an ao3 bookmark and write in the notes section which part they were at, but that assumes you aren't falling asleep while reading. If you have an account (which you should) then the "My History" page keeps track of every fic you've ever clicked on. No, it isn't searchable or sortable, but it does exist. I need an app because the website's search is terrible.

(I genuinely don't understand this one but I have seen it multiple times so on the list it goes!!) The search bar at the top of the screen is a keyword search. If you'd rather search within a specific field (like title or tag) then you'll want to click on the word "search" at the top of the screen and select Work Search or Tag Search. To search users, use People Search. To search Bookmarks, use Bookmark Search. (If this is you, please tell me what the heck you mean by "search is bad" and how an app helped with this.)

I need to be able to sort stories by date posted/number of bookmarks/alphabetical/etc.

You can do this using the filters sidebar. Pick a tag you want to filter on (like a fandom, character, or relationship) and then click on the "Filters" button. The sidebar will pop out and you can sort and filter on a boggling array of specifics. I need to be able to mark stories to read later.

AO3 has this feature built in! If you have an account (which you should) there is a "Mark for Later" option on every work.

Edit: Thispersonishuman reminded me that History and Mark For Later can be disabled, so if you're not seeing the Mark for Later option, check your settings.

I need to be able to listen to stories using text-to-speech.

Microsoft Edge web browser has a built in text to speech function. Supposedly it works on both iOS and Android, but I have not personally tested that. iOS also has a native accessibility feature in settings for text to speech that will work on the Books app, so I assume Android has a similar functionality. I need to have in-app notifications for updates/I can't ever find story updates in among the rest of my emails/checking my email stresses me out.

Set up a separate email address using a free service like gmail, and use that email address JUST for AO3. Then the only emails in that inbox will be your story updates. I use Apple's Mail application for all my inboxes, but it's very easy to use the Gmail app instead, and you could log in to JUST the ao3 email and set it to notify for every email.

(Also as a general PSA: don't use your work, school, or military email as your AO3 email. Just don't.)

I want statistics like how many hours I spent reading, how many words I read, what my most read tags were, stuff like that.

So we've finally hit something that isn't easy and that requires a hell of a lot of manual work. Short version: AO3 does not track this data because they don't want to. (Mostly due to privacy concerns.) The lack of this tracking is a feature, not a bug. You can crunch these numbers yourself, but it will take a hell of a lot more effort, and it's something I personally found is not worth the effort the couple of times I have tried to crunch those numbers. If you are willing to download your history to an actual computer (not a tablet or chromebook) using Calibre, you can get a rough idea of your most popular tags via their tag browser, but it won't play nice with typos synned to a Common Tag (Canonical Tag/filterable tag) like ao3 does. (If anyone has used an app that gave you stats on this, please let me know in reblogs/replies/via ask how that worked because I am very curious.)

so here is where our wild goose chase starts. I was going through a 2012 f1 blog's nico tag. it's actually pretty rare for early 2010s blogs to have comprehensive tagging systems so whenever I find one I try to go thru it all. and I come across this v cute nico image (cropped for posterity. payoff will be worth it promise)

here we have a picture, from 2012, and in classic 2012 fashion there is meme text on it. OP of the original pic deactivated. so I want to find the version without the meme text. pretty easy, just reverse google search right?

so, because I was born with excessive intelligence, I think hmmm... let me search the archives of Motorsport Images dot com. surely that is where Motorsport dot com would keep their Images.

two years of a racing driver's pictures means thousands of pictures. okay. let's start from April 2012. unfortch for keen eyed listening, April 2012 was also the Chinese Grand Prix aka Nico's first f1 win.

why is that relevant? because it means every photographer and their MOTHER took a picture of nico for his first win. over 900+ images.

while I am exhibiting extremely unemployed levels of behavior here, I don't actually have the time and brain capacity to sift through 900 images.

I go back to the original tumblr post. this time I go to the empty reblogs. there's lots!

but because there's no tags it can't help me. still I go through every one of them because you can see the blog I found the pic from @the-fastest-waffle is listed in the other reblogs even though they clearly had tags!

one person's singular tag of 'bahrain 2012 lol' led me down this spiral, where if it wasn't for that bit of information this would be lost forever because finding the version of the pic without the meme text is otherwise near impossible. google reverse search is no help, and f1 drivers simply get photographed way too much. reblogs + tags with context literally are a holy grail. this is what I imagine archaeologists feel like. so if you ever want someone 12 years after you've posted something to go down finding out, tag your posts accordingly (assuming tumblr survives the next decade)

so why did I do it? why did I spend hours of my life on this? cause it's fun. it's like a mystery and it itches at my skin. many times I'm not successful which is why the times I am feels so rewarding because it feels almost like detective work, finding and refinding something, overturning evidence. and I have a brain that just functions Like This.

Yeah that’s exactly what it is. I normally just use it for when I draw something that’s past my acceptable level of suggestive or if I make a meta critique/commentary post that I don’t necessarily want Harlan to see. I mean, I’m sure he could choose see it, but then that’s on him.

Also I’ll add cause I know some people get confused: You don’t need to tag posts you reblog as masked, the tag is only helpful if it’s on the original since that’s the version someone would see if they were scrolling the malevolent tag.

hi! my main blog is @doyouremem8erme (you may know me as marcylore or ghostadventurespirit0rb if you followed me back in the day) and i was into amphibia from after true colors until about a year after season 3 ended. however...i have now gotten back into this silly frog show and wanted to dig up old art from that time in the fandom.

i focus primarily on art but will reblog old fandom posts that i enjoy as well! fics, shitposts, gifs, etc.

most of my posts come from the depths of my main blog but i also will go through other blogs. lmk if you dont like me reblogging old posts directly from you and ill be sure to get them from the source instead! its just more efficient to queue directly from another blog. i also use the new tumblr search operators to find posts from specific fandom eras!

important note: this blog serves as an archive of art i enjoy and while ill avoid reblogging from artists who were found to be problematic, they may still appear on this blog on occasion to catalog that old art. reblogs from them do not mean i support the actions of the artist in question.

OKAY. as you guys know, this blog has been dead since.. sammys birthday. even before then. sorry guys :(

the reason why: I GOT MORE INTO BENDY. I DONT KNOW HOW THAT MADE MY BATIM ASK BLOG GO INTO HIATUS. I WAS DRAWING EVERY DAY... but. BUT!! it was not our beloved inky characters. It Was Pre-Cycle. ((oopsies))

looking back onto this blog, i need you guys to understand I made it with no story in mind, and thus everything was a mess. I was makin stuff up as i went. and then the craziest thing happened (delusional attatchment to wally franks + memories attatched to it... soo. uh yeah)

look, this blog isnt gonna disappear. BUT. im gonna pull a sneaky on you all and instead of doing that week-long event i said i would, i'm just gonna restart it from the beggining. HOWEVER!! everything will still be here! I'm gonna try to attatch links on all of the current things and get things sorted so that it's cleaner, because all of my old (and very very icky) drawings are gonna be archived. NOT REMOVED. they will still be here, but you won't be able to reblog them because... just. ew. lmao

now that im not completely angst-ridden, and my art style has vastly improved, i actually have a plan for the inky nightmares au! however, it's going to take a completely different turn- new characters, wally isnt bendy anymore, kana (unfortunately) isn't a part of the story, etc etc. it won't be canon compliant (as... it's an au,) but it'll have a whole lotta things changed! i hope you guys enjoy what i have planned, and i hope you'll bear with me while i give this blog an almost COMPLETE make-over!!

taking a break from rbing road trip posts for the day, but im gonna get up on my soapbox for a moment to just gush about some things, dont mind me aksjhd /lh

the reason why ive been reblogging most roadtrip posts is because i just wannted to have an easy way to see all of it together, because if you look on the archives for this blog with the tsproadtrip tag:

theres already so much done for it already

ive worried a lot abt what would happen if the trend died out, that ppl would get bored with it or forget about it esp during artfight, and i totally understand why it might. ive barely kept up with the tags myself recently. so the worry was reasonable,

but... seeing this? its amazing

theres so much done already, so much amazing art n ppl taking their time and will be spending time for this silly little event i thought up one night

its been a way for me to see other ppl in the fandom and find other designs and artists that ive never seen before, and at the same time, be able to gush about them all because despite all the community's been through, im glad to be in the fandom. and i hoped the trend would be able to spread positivity into it.

so, after seeing all the art and work done for this trend, im at ease if the trend dies out or no one does it. Im just glad that it was able to create all this in the first place.
