The moments where other criminals try (and fail) to threaten Jean Valjean are fascinating, because we get a glimpse of how deeply Valjean was altered by prison— how much nineteen years of prolonged torture really has made him into a “formidable” “dangerous” criminal.

If he weren’t a shy gentle compassionate person who just wants to be left alone in peace with his daughter, he could easily be the most deadly man in Paris. He’s strong, he’s cunning, he has decades of knowledge about how to evade police and a wealth of hidden tools at his disposal, he’s highly skilled at deception, he can fend off gangs of men at once even while unarmed and has perfect aim with a gun; he could do so much harm if he decided to, but he doesn’t.

I love how Jean Valjean seems to view Patron-minette’s affiliates as… amateurs? They’re bad criminals in that they’re bad at being criminals. When Montparnasse attempts to rob him, and when Patron Minette/Thenardier ambush him, Jean Valjean speaks to them with lofty pity and kinda implies he thinks they do not really understand how to commit crimes. He explains the galleys to Montparnasse like he’s lecturing a silly misbehaving child.

When he burns himself with the hot chisel, the implication is: “I spent nineteen years in a prison where I was beaten and tortured every day, and you’re naive and inexperienced enough to think you can hurt me with a single scrap of metal you’ve heated up in a fireplace. You poor things. Don’t be afraid of me because I’m certainly not afraid of you <3”.

Compared to Jean Valjean, Patron-minette and their affiliates really are kinda just …play-acting. I think that’s part of why they get all those comparisons to theater and Vaudeville. Thenardier is a failed innkeeper puffing himself up as the most dangerous and clever criminal mastermind in Paris. But Jean Valjean actually has decades of experience living in “the criminal underworld” of the galleys, and as a result he has more deeply traumatizing knowledge and experience than Thenardier can even begin to imagine. Thenardier fails at torturing Valjean because Thenardier does not have the experience to even start to imagine the torture Valjean has already survived. As I mentioned before, Valjean has all the skills and knowledge that Thenardier wants to have, but doesn’t. So it’s like….Jean Valjean is in many ways the kind of “successful expert criminal” that Thenardier is only pretending to be.

you can be as suprised and uncomfortable about the newest chapter as you want but can you please be normal. im not sure why this sexual assault is making people have such intense reactions when theres been plenty before (ig its because it was done by a character thats liked? or because it went further than before ones?) but you cannot start genuinely wishing death on fujimoto over it. you can be uncomfortable without posting hate about the author

Stanley had always wanted kids, but due to his life circumstances, it never happened. He could barely keep himself alive after he'd been kicked out, let alone support a kid. I feel like it's funny because, before you start dating, you think the reason he can't look you in the eye is just because he's aloof and doesn't care, but after you start, it's frustrating because it's so intimate and lovely and he still can't bring himself to do it! Despite always needing to be in your vicinity or up in your business, turning away the second you acknowledge him.

Getting-all-flustered-ass when you pay attention to him like he's not staring/glaring down everyone else... Yes, I would be kinda Pissed.

(It's really just because he's shy. Being all sexy and intimidating to keep people from thinking they can get all close to him.

The first time you go to the club together as a couple, you catch him giving sexy eyes to a guy chatting him up, and the second you walk over to confront him about it, he's melting under your gaze and ignoring the other person altogether... embarrassed and squirmy at the thought of you being mad at him but needing you to know it's just because he loves you so.

You know, for as much as I don't like the idea of these 'badass Van Helsing' movies and stuff where he's a sexy hyper competent vampire fighter, I DO understand the desire to fill in his backstory. Because we get hints of stuff that make one wonder, how does he know all of this about the undead? Is it simple research or has he encountered a situation like Lucy's before?

That doesn't mean I want a story of him being a stone cold badass, but it would be interesting to learn more about this man of science, who is a doctor and who knows the law and has all these interesting anecdotes of things that seem to defy the laws of nature or the world as man understands it. This man who is married and still faithful to his wife but also refers to her as his 'not wife' who is alive yet dead...I assume that it's a situation where they can't divorce and she may no longer be there mentally, but since it's not touched on further, who knows? Same with the son who died young. Child mortality was much higher and there's nothing to suggest that his son died at the hands of something supernatural, but again! We don't know!

Where and how did he learn these things? Did he deal with a Lucy like undead before, learn these things through research and trial and error? What was this guy like when he was teaching Jack? We know the how and when and why of Jack saving his life, but that would be fun to see as well, their relationship evolving from one of just student and teacher to one of friends and colleagues on equal footing...while of course Van Helsing does his personal studies into the things in the world that Don't Make Sense™ in the background.

There's gotta be a way to do a movie or story about Van Helsing without turning him into John Wick but for vampires.
