What’s the interview you’re referring to in your tags on that Square Hammer post? (also hard agree with your stream of consciousness there)
Ooh so I will have a dig see if I can find it but I'm pretty sure it was an Impera-era review by I think Loudwire? Because in the part I'm thinking of, they contrasted Tobias now with him during Prequelle era and specifically said they'd 'never seen anyone cry in the studio while recording an album before'. Ough.
It WAS somewhat of a tag monologue (apologies) but my all-time favourite pastime is microanalysing different pictures of T Forge

cats who are slugs ‼️ img text under the cut!
the crimson brother (mario)
blinding, and easy to spot, which causes ALL creatures to become hostile towards it.
however, its strength is immense in rebuttal
landing on enemies stuns them, and being bitten poisons the perpetrator
its jump is incredibly high and impressive, being higher than any other slugcat
the tattletail (goombella)
a squirrel like slugcat that can crawl along the ground at high speeds
capable of seeing the health and stats of all creatures nearby
the eyes of this slugcat can glow when in darkness
the chelonian (koops)
a chitin covered slugcat that is capable of hiding within its shell when threatened
while in its shell, no damage can be taken for a certain amount of time. after this time is up, the shell cracks and dmg can be taken again
it takes one cycle for the shell to heal up again
the larva (kid yoshi)
a slugpup that holds the incredible ability to eat or swallow any creature, no matter the size
despite this, it is still incredibly fragile, and will perish to any amount of damage taken
the misted (madame flurrie)
when threatened, it can emit a thick mist that slows down enemies or completely stops them in their tracks
a slugcat who is obsessed with pearls
obtaining pearls to keep will make it stronger and nimble
the burning shade (vivian)
a mildly transparent slugcat that lurks in the shadows to pounce on prey
its fur and body are sizzling to the touch, and when a beast inhales the smoke they emit, its throat begins to burn. its demise is soon to come
it dons a hat given to it by its mechanical creator, in hopes it helps the creature maintain a shadowed presence
the mollusk (admiral bobbery)
a small yet sleek slugcat that lurks in the swamps and waters
it dons a shell akin to a snails, and uses it as a hiding place and a shelter to sleep
when inside the shell, it can sleep for one cycle, make mini explosions that stun (again, like snails), and traverse bodies of water
like the rivulet, this slugcat can swim, and cannot drown
the thief (ms.mowz)
this slugcat is meek and nimble, capable of jumping exceptionally high, taking zero fall damage.
this slugcat has a passive buff that makes them less likely to be noticed by enemies, despite their leucistic appearance
if this slugcat is forced to attack or defend, biting an enemy will steal health for its own

Even at her lowest, sobbing in the office of a man she finds herself unable to let go of, all she can think about is how she looks. There's no vanity or ego in it only shame and disgust in herself and her bloodshot eyes, the flush of her face from crying as hard as she is and the way her mouth twists into anything but graceful.
Gods, how could she be thinking about how she looks at a moment like this?
Valeria knows how though, and how years of modeling can destroy common sense in even the smartest of teenage girls. It took her years just to kick the diets and the fads but the damage to her perception of her image seems to be permanent.
Or maybe it's just gotten worse again, just like everything else about her.
That must be it, she's just getting worse because she can't get better so what's the point in stagnation in just being? She tried to get worse intentionally back on Helios, backstabbing Don and eventually Doom to no victory. She gained nothing from those endeavors, no solace or retribution or even a sense of satisfaction.
What had she even done it all for?
Why couldn't she let it rest?
You ended our marriage because of this same fear, hadn't you? Patterns, patterns, Love.
They hiccup in surprise when Midas touches them without them even noticing that he had gotten close but they revel in the affection, the sign that they hadn't ruined something so precious to them again. Instantly she cups the gauntlet with her own hand as if to try and press her cheek even more into its palm.
The cool metal against her burning cheek helps ground her back to the yacht and she looks up at Midas with nothing but stars in her eyes.
He truly was a radiant man.
"I'm sorry," They repeat it after a moment of just soaking in the coolness of his hand. "I believe you, I do. I know that you are nothing like him, I...wish I knew why I reacted like I did."
Valeria exhales, shaky and unsure. "It doesn't make what I said any better, I know. You should be furious with me."
"I missed you so much,"
✨Congratulations, Your Majesty!✨
You have made it through your youthful curse. The Prince will be sent home, and the King will return. Hopefully, you have learned something from this.
✨Welcome back, King Midas.✨
The Prince entered the King's office with a sudden push to the door. He was aggravated and just wanted to dig through his future self's affects to see if he could find anything useful towards sending him home.
However, he saw Valeria sitting at the desk when he opened the door, and his shoulders slumped. He was in no mood to have another back and forth with anyone, no matter how beautiful. However, again, she could be helpful. If he could manage to play this conversation right.
He closed the door behind him and stepped to the desk, taking off the crown from his head and setting it in front of her, "Valeria, I'd very much like to go home. The version of me you all think so highly of must have something that can help with that in this desk. So if you wouldn't mind letting me where you are, I'm going to look through it."
He didn't like the look she gave him, but just as Valeria went to speak, she and everything else seemed to freeze in place.
He then heard a voice coming from everywhere, expressing congratulations and a return to home.
"Oh, thank the Gods!" He shouted before there was a flash of light that came from his own body--
--When the Prince opened his eyes, he found himself staring into another set. One gold, and one white. They were his eyes, only...older. Tired, dark underneath, and obviously angry.
"You have made quite the mess for me to clean up." King Midas said to him.
The Prince blinked, taking in the dark tattoos wrapping around his neck and disappearing under his clothes, the scar cutting down from his forehead across his eye, and his hair. Longer than the statue, but still far too short. The Prince cleared his throat, "The company you keep should learn how to speak with royalty. Have you no respect for your own title--"
"Enough." Midas put a hand up to silence him, the Prince's eyes quickly scrutinizing the gold covering it, "You make a mockery of it, you have insulted people I care a great deal for, and have thoroughly embarrassed me. I am so very glad to have outgrown you."
They glared at each other a moment before the Prince, just as the King made a move to step, said, "Do you...do you have any advice for me? Before I go back?"
Midas paused, eyeing the other again before sighing, "No. You aren't going to remember any of this anyway."
"How could you possibly know that?"
"I just do, alright? I don't have the patience to explain, but whatever it was that put this curse on us...it would never be so kind as to give me the opportunity to fix my mistakes. No...you're going to go back with no memory of being here. Nothing I say to you now is going to matter."
"Then..." The Prince shifted where he stood, eyes locked onto the gold covering the other’s skin, "Say it anyway."
Midas looked at the young man with deep sorrow. Regret, guilt, anguish, all mixed together in his mind as two gold eyes stared hungrily at the precious metal covering him.
He reached forward, gilded hands gently taking the Prince's shoulders, "Be satisfied. Recognize that what you have...your life, your love, your future daughter, they are all enough. Please, please do not throw it all away for power or wealth. Appreciate everything."
He could see in the Prince's eyes a desire to pull back. He knew there must have been an intensity to his own gaze that would make the younger man uncomfortable. However, the Prince did not pull away. Instead, he swallowed hard, and he seemed to steel himself. He nodded somberly.
Midas did not want to let him go. Part of him thought, horrifyingly, that killing him would prevent every mistake he ever made. But, it would also prevent everything else. Every friendship, every love, every accomplishment and joy. Jules, Valeria, Tina, Marigold...all of it.
He slid his hands from the prince's shoulders, nodding himself. Both of them took the step to pass each other, both stepped towards the lights that would take them home.
King Midas stopped just before reaching his. Looking over his shoulder, he saw his younger self reach for the light, and disappear. He hadn't looked back. Of course not. Deciding not to look back, not to reflect...That was always his problem.
Not anymore.
The King turned to the light once more, and next found himself snapping open his eyes in his office. Valeria sat in front of him at his desk, his crown on its surface. He picked it up with hands covered in gold, and replaced it on his head.
“I’m back, φοίνικα μου.”

The New D&D 5.5 Rogue
For people who got an advance copy of the 2024 PHB, the NDA was lifted on August 1st. This is a summary from RPG Bot's 2024 DnD 5e Transition Guide and Change Log: Everything That’s Different in the new Player’s Handbook. See also here for more commentary on previously released details. I would like to note that:
The new Weapon Mastery rules (from the playtests) give martials lovely options they didn't have before.
There are some iffy flat DCs all over the book: the actions Hide (stealth), Influence (social skills), and Thieves' Tools (to disarm traps and pick locks) are all a flat DC 15. So this is either a completely stupid change (not all locks or all Persuasion checks were made equal!), OR the DMG will include rules and guidelines to adjust these DCs for different conditions.
Which (if that's the case) would mean that now Players and DMs know different rules about fundamental aspects of the game. I hate this, I hate that skills are now even less well-defined in the PHB, and I will rant more about this at a later time.
But anyway, here's RPGBot's summary:
Rogue
1. Expertise. No longer allows you to select Thieves’ Tools.
1. Thieves’ Cant. Also grants you an extra language proficiency.
1. Weapon Mastery. New.
3. Steady Aim. Identical to the Optional Class Feature.
5. Cunning Strike. Allows you to reduce your Sneak Attack damage in exchange for powerful rider effects like knocking the target prone or applying the Poisoned condition.
7. Reliable Talent. Moved from 11th level.
11. Improved Cunning Strike. New. Use up to 2 Cunning Strike effects on the same attack.
14. Blindsense. Gone.
14. Devious Strikes. New. Adds more Cunning Strike options.
15. Slippery Mind. Now adds proficiency in both Wisdom and Charisma saves instead of just Wisdom.
20. Stroke of Luck. Turn any d20 test into a 20. This means at least one guaranteed critical hit between each rest.
Arcane Trickster
3. Spellcasting. Now allows you to retrain a cantrip when you gain a level.
3. Mage Hand Legerdemain. Most of the 2014 feature’s capabilities were added to Mage Hand, with the exception of the ability to use Sleight of Hand and Thieves’ Tools. Now you can use Mage Hand for Sleight of Hand.
9. Magical Ambush. Now requires you to have the Invisible condition, which at a glance sounds like a huge problem, but the 2024 Hide action gives you the Invisible condition if you successfully hide.
13. Versatile Trickster. Now allows you to trip a target with your Mage Hand, but only when you use the Trip option from Cunning Strike.
Assassin
Much more reliable and less focus on disguises and infiltration. Much more stabby.
3. Assassinate. Reworked completely. Now much easier to use and much more consistently effective, but there’s no automatic critical hits.
3. Assassin’s Tools. Renamed from “Bonus Proficiencies”. Now also gives you one of each kit for free.
9. Infiltration Expertise. Reworked completely. No more false identity. Now you can perfectly mimic speech and handwriting, and Steady Aim doesn’t reduce your speed to 0.
13. Imposter. Gone.
13. Envenom Weapons. Extra poison damage when you use the Poison option of Cunning Strike. The damage applies whenever the target fails the save, which includes the additional saves at the end of each of their turns.
Soulknife
Very few changes.
3. Psionic Power. Like the Psi Warrior, the Soulknife’s Psionic Power feature now explicitly states that these dice are only for Soulknife features, the progression is tied to your Rogue level rather than your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain one die on a Short Rest.
3. Psychic Blades. The blades have the Vex Weapon Mastery, and can now be used for Opportunity Attacks.
Thief
3. Fast Hands.
Sleight of Hand. The wording here is a mess, but the Thief Rogue and only the Thief Rogue can use Sleight of Hand in conjunction with Thieves’ Tools to pick locks and disarm traps.
Now allows you to use magic items which normally take an Action to activate due to the new “Utilize” action. Existing item use case remain awesome.
3. Second-Story Work. Now much simpler, but functionally similar. A Climb speed and you use Dexterity for Athletics checks to jump.
9. Supreme Sneak. Reworked completely. Now a Cunning Strike option that allows you to attack without giving away your position.
13. Use Magic Device. Reworked completely. You no longer ignore restrictions on items, such as class requirements. Instead, you get an extra attunement slot, you have a chance to not spend charges when using a magic item, and you can use spell scrolls.
Picking Locks, Disarming Traps, Thieves' Tools, Sleight of Hand
Take a deep breath, because this one is confusing.
In the 2014 rules, you used proficiency in Thieves' Tools to disarm traps and pick locks. Sleight of Hand was used almost exclusively for picking pockets. Baldur's Gate 3 changed that when adapting the 5e rules for a video game.
In the 2024 rules, there is some confusion. Page 221 of the Player's Handbook details tools and their uses. Thieves' Tools list "Pick a Lock' and "Disarm a Trap" as two uses for the tool, which means that you apply proficiency with Thieves' Tools when performing those actions. This is the same as the 2014 rules.
The confusion sneaks in with the Thief Rogue's Fast Hands feature's Sleight of Hand option.
"Make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check to pick a lock or disarm a trap with Thieves' Tools or to pick a pocket"
The lack of commas or formatting makes this text somewhat confusing. If it was intended to be three bullets, there would be commas. "Pick a lock comma disarm a trap with Thieves' Tools comma or pick a pocket". Instead, we can split your options with Fast Hands (Sleight of Hand) into two bullet points to clarify it:
Make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check to pick a lock or disarm a trap with Thieves' Tools
Pick a pocket
This means that the Thief Rogue and only the Thief Rogue can use Sleight of Hand to pick locks and disarm traps while using Thieve's Tools. In fact, to do this as a Bonus Action, they're required to use Sleight of Hand. As per the rules for tools on Page 220 of the Player's Handbook, if you're also proficient with Thieves' Tools, you get Advantage on this check. All fantastic for the Thief Rogue and their ability to pick locks and disarm traps, especially since you can no longer get Expertise with tools, but you can get Expertise with Sleight of Hand.
If you are not a Thief Rogue, nothing has changed. Thieves' Tools are used for picking locks and disarming traps.

ranking my top 5 R1999 6 stars (so far) bc I'm annoying ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
1st place: Lucy
What can I say... she's probably the best DPS in the game and I'm SO glad I got her. I had stopped playing the game for like 3 months, so coming back and getting her in like the first 10 pull was insane. I even managed to get her Pyschube in time as well, which made her the perfect unit to the point where she's been carrying my account since. I also love that her Afflatus is the Intellect type, because that way she can literally fight every battle in the game without disadvantages. Absolute queen.
2nd place: Tooth Fairy
I had been using Yenisei for the longest time as a healer, and even though she's fricking amazing (especially considering her shields!) people were not kidding, Tooth Fairy is far better. She provides a huge amount of healing to the whole party, can increase your crit damage, and can cleanse all debuffs with her Ultimate. She's a must for every account.
VERY SURPRISINGLY... 3rd place: 6
I got 6 by accident when trying to pull for Isolde, the two of them were sharing banner in that moment and well... I was very upset I got him instead of her. After actually playing him though, I can admit now that he's a great unit. He inflicts A LOT of debuffs and can give you A LOT of buffs, which is super super useful. Him, Lucy and Tooth Fairy are the team I use to get through content and they are crazy good together, especially because he also shares Afflatus with Lucy, so both have advantages almost all the time.
4th place: Semmelweis
Semmelweis was given for free for the game's anniversary and man, they actually gave us such a good character. Same as 6, she's a buffer type of character but in her case it's at the cost of the user's HP (hot vampire woman goes brr). This may seem problematic at first because she takes a lot of 'blood' but that DMG output she provides is so worth it, plus she's perfect for Eternity and I LOVE Eternity. She also deals follow up attacks after her Ultimate, and they are very, very strong.
5th place: 37
Of course my daughter 37 had to make it. I still need better teammates for her unfortunately (namely Lylia or Anjo Nala) but she's still awesome. She deals Genesis DMG which ignores defense, has follow-up attacks and can buff the entire party's attack as well. I hope I can get her best/desired team in the future and some of her portraits to really make her shine.
_________________________________________________________________________
The rest of my 6 stars (Eternity, Spathodea, Jessica and Sotheby) are also very good too but the reasons they are not here are:
Both Spathodea and Eternity carried me through the early game, but kind of fell off the moment the game got harder. I still use them though, especially Eternity, since she has Semmelweis with her. Spathodea not so much, could probably give her a Burn team in the future.
Jessica and Sotheby I just got tbh, but I really like the fact that they can inflict Poison and I'll definitely build them at some point. I've got one of the new characters (Willow) on my sight, and she would really benefit from having a Poison team. We'll see.
#abbey plays r1999#doing these posts for myself#so I can see how things change in the future#also I love this game and need to just#talk about it#yay 💕#I really hope I can get Anjo Nala man...#I need my 37 to thrive#also she's really fucking cool#sadly skipping both Tuesday and Argus for her#sorry queens...

⭐ ! You can pick whenever you think of first btw ^.^
az's primary role is sentinel (SEN). the sentinel class provokes enemy attacks onto itself and uses enhanced defense to minimize dmg to its party. I think this role calls to az's former kingship but also his tendency to masochistically take punishment in his desire for atonement.
nerine's primary role is saboteur (SAB). saboteurs use attribute-lowering abilities and status ailments, like Poison, to weaken enemies. more obvious in that she has poison type pkmn lol but also says something about her possessiveness and the more toxic feelings she harbors for az early in their relationship ^^
SEN/SAB paradigm -> Stumbling Block (SEN protects SAB, who attempts to weaken enemies)
