AWARD SEASON #1
'Across the Spider-Verse' is one of the best superhero films ever made, maybe even the very best
Tumblr media
(Annie Awards nominee, BAFTA longlist, and Oscars shortlist)
★★★★½ - excellent
After the absolutely amazing film that was 'Into the Spider-Verse' (2018), it is fair to say that the sequel had some big shoes to fill. But, at least in my opinion, it had no obligation to fill those shoes, so to speak.
For one, the first film had a storyline that was pretty much set and done at the end. It had room to expand the universe and characters, for sure, but it didn't have to do that. The conflict was pretty much resolved, and even with that (kinda) cliffhanger ending, it could've all just ended there.
What I mean to say is that, considering how incredibly good the first film was, the second one had no obligation to exist, let alone be just as good as the first. It also had no obligation to be better than the first one. It had no obligation to be much better. And it certainly had no obligation to be one of the best superhero films ever made, maybe even, dare I say, the very best of the genre.
So I am very glad to say that 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (2023) not only accomplishes all that, in some ways it surpassed all expectations I could ever have for a picture like this. In that way, it certainly deserves its place among films like 'The Dark Knight' (2008) and 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019), as one of the best superhero films out there.
Tumblr media
'Across the Spider-Verse' once again proves that quote by Guillermo Del Toro -- "animation is not a genre, it's a medium" -- to be correct, in so many ways. I feel like a few years ago a lot of people kept repeating this quote without fully understanding it, and I think films like this one really help to show how true it really is.
You could try to make a film like this work in live action, but all that would do is limit everything to the boundaries of physical reality (and the always existing limitations of CGI in live action). The medium of animation allows for so much more creative liberty, exploring so many different genres, styles, and ways to tell a story. And I feel like both the Spider-Verse films use animation to its full potential in this sense. It uses animation to both create stories that could never be fully told in live action, and to enhance the emotional impact of the stories that possibly could.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, the animation in this film is stunning. Every shot better than the last. Just like the first film, the whole animation is based on a comic book æsthetic, that shifts and changes for each universe, each character, even with each emotion the characters are going through. My mouth was agape throughout almost every scene. The action, the pacing, the fluidity of the animation, it all works wonderfully.
One scene in particular, in which Gwen talks to her father in her universe, legitimately made me want to cry. Both because of how beautiful the animation looked, and for the amount of character and humanity this film is able to show through that animation.
Tumblr media
And that is what makes this film work completely. The characters.
Every important character, old and new, is so fleshed out, so well developed, and so charismatic that you can't help but be genuinely invested in what they go through and the challenges they have to face. Gwen's storyline, for instance, is so incredibly well done, she's so marvellously developed in this, that I think I love her character even more in this film than I did in the first one. She has a central role in the film that sometimes makes her even more important, and interesting, than Miles.
That is not to say, of course, that Miles doesn't play an important role or that he is not interesting. Far from it. I may have found Gwen's story more interesting at times, but the struggles Miles goes through are, in fact, the heart of the film.
I won't go into spoilers here, but let's just say that his story taps into the Spider-Man mythos in a way I have never seen any other film do. It explores what makes Spider-Man a hero in such a meta way that I think it's just brilliant. This is, in fact, one of the most brilliant films that has ever used the concept of multiverse and parallel realities that I have ever seen. And saying that in a reality where both 'Everything, everywhere, all at once' (2022) and 'Rick and Morty' (2013-) exist is really saying something.
Amazing animation, amazing use of animation, amazing characters, and an absolutely brilliant exploration of the Spider-Man mythos. What more could you want? This was just fantastic.

'After more than a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. admits he was once worried that playing Iron Man would have ruined his acting abilities. Marvel Studios' inaugural actor kicked off the MCU in 2008 via Iron Man. Since then, he had become the face of the franchise until he ended his stint as Tony Stark in 2019's Avengers: Endgame
Downey has had a couple of projects in his post-MCU career, but Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is definitely the biggest. As he tackles one of his biggest acting challenges in recent years, he admits in a new interview with New York Times that focusing on the Marvel franchise scared him about losing his acting abilities. Read his full quote below:
Yes. A hundred percent, and I knew there was a point where Chris Nolan was endorsing, let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things.
Robert Downey Jr's 10 Years As Iron Man Made Him Worried About Acting In Oppenheimer
Boasting a star-studded ensemble including Cillian Murphy as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh, Downey plays Lewis Strauss in the much-anticipated Oppenheimer. This marks the first time that the former MCU star is part of a bigger cast wherein he isn't top of the billing list following his decade-long role as Iron Man. It doesn't mean, however, the work is any easier. While the pressure to spearhead a massive project may not solely be on his shoulders, there's expectation for him to deliver some of his best acting, considering all the talent that he is surrounded by.
For what it's worth, it never seemed like Downey just coasted his way through the MCU. Granted that he shared some of Stark's signature qualities, but the actor always delivered great performances. It didn't matter whether he was headlining the film such as in his trilogy, part of an ensemble like in the Avengers movies, or essentially a supporting character, which was the case in Captain America: Civil War, Downey always brought his A-game. This was a big reason why seeing him as Iron Man was always exciting.
Perhaps Downey's fears are rooted not in being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but instead of playing the same character for 11 years. The lack of variety meant that it was easy for him to slip in and out of Iron Man's shoes. Now that he is out of the Marvel bubble, he can take a variety of roles moving forward, starting with Oppenheimer.'

I can answer this one actually.
Basically, the original movie was a really beloved experience for everyone involved in it. Actors will always say of a project when it comes out "oh, it was great, it was life-changing, everyone is best friends forever" and of course its all PR nonsense. You have to wait a few years before the real dirt starts getting dished.
Well, in the case of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, it turns out that that was literally true. It would be seven, eight, nine years later, and the cast would be doing media for something like Avengers: Endgame or Birds of Prey or Succession or any of the other projects they'd moved onto, and someone would mention "well, of course, back before you were super famous you were in Scott Pilgrim" and their eyes would just light right up and they'd become very effusive about how much they fucking loved working on it.
The story they all like to tell (you can see Mary Elizabeth Winstead mention it here and Chris Evans mention it here) is that when they were making the movie, they had an email chain, as one does, to coordinate their schedules and just chat and whatnot. And then the movie ends, and they all go their separate ways.
Like nine years later, like in 2019 or something, Michael Cera resurrects it by literally grabbing a Scott Pilgrim meme he saw on TikTok or something and posting it there, like no time has passed at all. And Chris Evans replies "Michael, what the hell?" and suddenly they're all chatting together again.
That email chain was used to coordinate the 10th anniversary table read of the script. (See here.) You'll notice they have almost everyone back; even Evans made the time.
It was also used to contact everyone to get them involve when the anime was green-lit. To quote from a Variety piece on the subject:
Eventually, Wright formally contacted the actors through the email group they’d maintained since 2010 to pitch them the new concept, including copies of the first two scripts. Since the release of the film, many of the cast have become full-fledged stars with packed schedules. So while O’Malley says having them return “was the golden ideal,” they tried to manage their expectations. “We were open to having to start all over if everyone said no.” Grabinski expected to start hearing back “over the span of six weeks.” Instead, he says, “It was emailed in the morning, and before lunch, almost everybody had replied to the thread and said they were going to do it. I literally screamed.”
So basically, the reason they got everyone back is just because all of them love Scott Pilgrim and each other just that much.
I genuinely can’t comprehend how Scott pilgrim takes off got LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE IMPORTANT AND SEMI IMPORTANT CHARACTER to be on the cast??!! Like they must have made them sign a contract agreeing to rejoin the cast in the event of some kind of reboot, otherwise literally how could they get everyone???!!!!

Imp: Oh, she’s pissed. She thinks she failed. Which of course she did, but you know there’s a lot of that going around, ain’t there?
Glimmer: Honestly, until this exact second, I thought you were a Build-A-Bear.
Imp: Maybe I am.
Catra: Wait, you can TALK?!
