Carrie Wilson Meets (And Roasts) Caleb Covington

Carrie huffed as she walked out of the kitchen, her decision made. She was going to follow Nick to figure out whatever was going on with him. He had been acting weird for the last week and Carrie was absolutely sick of it. One day, she and Nick were over for good and Nick was planning to ask Julie on a date and the next day, Nick was just strolling up to her locker wearing a sequinned capelet to ask if she was still interested in ending Julie's reign of terror on her and delineating this incredibly detailed and elaborate plan to humiliate Julie so badly that she begs her dad to move to another state and Carrie can happily continue to be the queen of the hallways at school and will never have to worry about Julie again. That was inarguably suspicious to Carrie.

"Dad, I'm going out!" Carrie shouted to her father somewhere on the other side of the house and walked outside without waiting for a reply. Shutting the door behind her, she started her journey to Nick's house just as he was leaving to go... Somewhere. She furrowed her eyebrows as she sneaked behind a bush, sniffing a rose quickly before rushing after him.

She groaned softly as she rubbed her sore foot, shaking her head. Ugh. She really should have worn her favorite Adidas running sneakers for this. She'd been following him for an hour in her two inch heeled loafers (what a mistake) to what looked like some creepy hotel building. She glanced up, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion when she saw... "Julie and Flynn?" She whispered to herself, watching Julie turn her head to speak to air next to her. She frowned at that, turning back to "Nick" to see him walk inside the building, Julie and Flynn following closely. "Carrie Wilson, what on Earth are you getting yourself into?" She asked herself and ran to follow "Nick" and the girls into the hotel before the doors could apparently magically close behind him.

She shook her head as she watched that happen behind her and looked around while Julie and Flynn followed Nick to wherever he was going. She let out a breath as she took in pictures scattered along a wall around a sign that read "THE HOLLYWOOD GHOST CLUB MEMBERS ONLY" in bold golden lettering. "Ghost club?" She questioned quietly, hoping her little slip up had gone unnoticed once she realized she's spoken aloud. She quickly found the group and hid behind a plant, a little ways away from them but close enough to hear what they were saying.

Hearing things like "Caleb Covington", "what do you mean he possessed Nick?", "Luke, if the three of you weren't already dead, I would kill you for coming here and messing with this guy" only served to make Carrie extremely confused. She had no idea what was going on anymore. Why was Julie talking to thin air? Who was Caleb Covington and why did he possess Nick? What the Hell was this place?

She huffed and started to follow Nick, who was currently dressed in a very un-Nick-like tight black button up and trousers to what seemed to be a dressing room, being stopped by hearing a very familiar voice speak to her.

"Are you a new member here?" She turned her head, her jaw dropping slightly.

"Kayla?" She blurted out in shock and confusion at the girl in the purple dress in front of her who looked very much like her best friend, Kayla.

"Um, no. The name is Betsey." The girl smiled, reaching out to shake her hand.

"Carrie?!"

Carrie flinched and turned to see Julie and Flynn gawking at her, four new faces suddenly surrounding Julie. She let out a small shriek at that, blinking as she took a closer look at the boys. Julie's band were with her! But who was that new boy with long hair?

"I see the three of you are back. Come to accept my offer after all?" "Nick" smiled menacingly at the boys, his eyes rolling back.

"What- What are you and Flynn and your band doing here?" She asked, incredibly bewildered and disoriented as "Nick" started to glow blindingly white, and then there was a flash of light and a tall man appeared next to an unconscious Nick lying on the floor.

"Nick!" Julie ran and crouched next to him, looking up to glare at Caleb. "What did you do to him?" She yelled in anger.

"Oh, relax!" Caleb gave dismiss wave of his hand and rolled his eyes. "The boy will be fine in an hour." He told him. "But I'm not interested in him. No, I'm interested..." He raised both hands to point at Julie's bandmates. "In you three."

"Well, too bad! You still can't have us, Covington!" The shortest boy with large, angry eyes shouted, protectively stood in front of the tall blond and the long dark haired boy, who were in front of the one clad in a leather jacket.

"Mmm, are you sure about that?" Caleb scrunched his nose up, clasping his hands together. "Because last time I checked, I very nearly got you working here."

"You mean you very nearly killed my friends!" Julie snapped, Nick's head now gently perched on Julie's knee.

"Wait, what?" Carrie blurted out, blinking as she processed what Julie was accusing this man of.

"Ugh, details." Caleb shook his head, rolling his eyes once again. He was really starting to leave a bad taste in Carrie's mouth.

"Mr. Covington here," Julie huffed, clenching her fists bitterly. "Tried to charm my band into leaving me to join his band and work under him." She pursed her lips, taking a deep breath. "He forcibly put this mark on them, that would jolt them any time they went against him. He was going to have my boys, or he was going to kill them a second time. Poof them out of existence. Gone." She explained slowly.

"You tried to do what to Julie's band?" Carrie snapped and walked toward Caleb, getting in his face.

Caleb frowned, backing away from Carrie as she just continued to stomp toward him.

"How dare you? Do you have even a shred of morals in your hideously gaudily dressed body?" She asked him in disgust, hands on her hips. "Or are you purely stale air?"

"Oop." Flynn watched her with wide eyes, glancing at Julie before returning her gaze to Carrie and Caleb.

"Because I feel like if you have to try as hard as you did to take Julie's boys away from her so that you could have them instead, which as much as I dislike the girl, she did not deserve after the year she's just had," She glared at him, surprising everyone. "and then tried to literally obliterate them from existence as some kind of messed up revenge for refusing you, which neither they nor Julie deserved either," She grimaced at him, tilting her head slightly. "then I feel like I'm allowed to say that maybe, just maybe, you aren't really as-" She lifted her hands to make finger quotes. "'special' and 'talented' as your-" She lifted a hand to tap a finger against his over-gelled hair. "nar-cis-sis-tic lit-tle pea brain has convinced you that you are." She pointed out with a smirk, making Flynn snort into their hand.

"Carrie, I-I don't think antagonizing him-" Alex piped up but was cut off by Carrie lifting a finger and continuing to speak.

"In fact, not only did you need Julie's boys, but you needed an entire band behind you, dancers and aerialists, and a magic show," She counted each group of lackeys and minions Caleb needed behind him on her fingers. "to entertain all of your guests, all of whose souls were forcibly taken by you. I gotta say, that's incredibly off putting, and..." She sniffed, sneering at the man. "I smell a diseased rat. But hey, maybe someday, if you decide you want to really work for it, you can earn the love of your fake fans instead of forcing it out of them magically like some badly dressed creep with beady eyes and too white teeth." She shrugged, and the girls and the phantoms snorted and snickered into their hands, watching her. "I dunno." She turned to Julie and Flynn with a smile, tucking her hair behind her ear. "See you at school, girls!" She waved, the girls quickly waving back at her in silence, and gently hauled Nick up to get him out of this awful place. She began to strut away, stopping when she heard Caleb speak.

"How dare you speak to me like that, you insolent little girl?" He uttered in shock.

"I simply spoke the truth." Carrie shrugged carelessly, bored of him. "Now if you don't mind, I'll be taking my ex boyfriend home to recover from you and Julie, Flynn, and Julie's band, are just leaving."

Julie smiled and nodded, taking Flynn's hand in her left and Luke's hand in her right. "Yes, we are." She looked up, smirking at a glowering Caleb Covington. "Adios, Mr. Covington." She said simply and the group walked away, leaving Caleb alone.

Y/N took a deep breath as she closed the front door behind her. It was Thursday which meant happy hour at the pub near their flat so she was excited for cider after cider and well, to see her friends. Despite feeling drained from the week’s workload and her boss cornering her about the next week’s article, a tired smile appeared on her lips at the thought of letting loose with the people she loved the most.

She took her Adidas trainers off and placed them next to Harry’s Nikes while tying her hair into a messy bun. After doing her ‘after-work’ routine in the bathroom (washing her hands, taking her rings and earrings off...), she made her way towards the stairs that led up to the bedrooms, passing the quiet living room in which the telly showed Nigella on mute.

Since Harry was having time-off from work, she knew he was either in the bathroom or doing something in their bedroom upstairs. Since he wasn’t anywhere to be found downstairs, she made her way up to their bedroom, noting to fix the wonky photo frames on the walls that welcomed her as she took each step. When she came to the last step, she called his name.

“Harry?”

When no one replied, she opened the slightly ajar door to find a tall body sleeping between the covers. As she made her way towards him, she smiled at his lack of clothes and damp hair which caused a dark patch on his pillow.

Taking a look at the digital clock on the bedside table, she patted the area where Harry was laying to make sure she wouldn’t sit on his legs.

“Baby,” she whispered while she gently petted his cheek. She couldn’t help but feel tingly when her palm made contact with his growing scruff.

Harry nuzzled his cheek into Y/N’s palm and slowly opened his eyes which showed he couldn’t have been asleep for more than half an hour.

She smiled at the sleepy boy and gave a kiss to her nose.

“You OK babe?”

“Yeah, just passing time while you’re being a boss ass babe at work” he murmured and lifted himself on the bed, getting closer to her. “Missed youuuu,”

“Missed you more” it was true. Ever since Harry started spending most of his time at her flat since he was taking some time off from recording and meetings, they both became somewhat clingy and needy for each other which- she didn’t even care to be honest.

They were always together. They woke up to each other. They cooked together. They had sex at least twice a day. They touched each other like they were teenagers and they went to sleep after they read their books in bed, side by side. Sometimes she offered to read him if she thought the book was something that would interest him while Harry too loved reading bits from his book because he knew she liked collecting quotes in her notes app.

While she was daydreaming about their routine, Harry got up from the bed and made his way to the wardrobe.

She looked at his pale bum and chuckled.

“Doing squats lately?” she asked, knowing how he kept complaining about his bum getting bigger because he couldn’t stop eating too much carbohydrates (she caught him stealing bread  numerous times from the bread bin before bed).

He scoffed as he struggled to put his boxers on and Y/N went to hug him from behind and she kissed his shoulders which were still warm from his nap.

“You’re so cosy. Mmm, look at these broad shoulders. You’re well fit, aren’t you,”

“Yeah, mock me arse and then compliment me shoulders. That won’t work”

She smirked at the way he leaned back on her body and how he stopped trying to get her boxers on as they stayed very low on his hips.

“Why you leaning back on me then huh?” She touched her lips to his left shoulder again and blew a raspberry as he wiggled his shoulders in hopes of breaking free.

He turned and surged forwards, capturing her lips in a needy kiss. As she opened her mouth, he immediately went for her tongue. She chuckled at the spit running down his chin and wiped it off with the palm of her hand.

“Messy”

“I like it messy”

“Yeah you’re such a boy,” she kissed the side of his mouth and they parted.

“You coming with? To the pub?” she asked and watched as he took her beige trousers and a white t-shirt from the wardrobe.

Satisfied with his nod, Y/N placed one last kiss between his shoulder blades and left the room, wanting to take a quick shower before changing into her most comfortable jeans- if there was such thing.

Remembering the forgotten toiletry bag downstairs beside where she threw her bag on the sofa, she left the bathroom without his trousers on and went down the stairs, laughing at Harry who sent her a wink from where he was seated on the bed.

It was nearly seven which left her an hour to get ready. It was fine, she thought and spared a glance at her legs while she walked, noticing the little growing hairs. When she arrived where her makeup bag was, the letters on the coffee table caught her eye.

Piled up letters and parcels weren’t anything unusual for their household though Y/N made sure to open everything in time in case they got anything urgent like bills and stuff like that. Since there was one teared open, she put the makeup bag back and took the rectangular envelope in her hands.

They weren’t a sneaky couple: neither Y/N or Harry ever went through each others’ phones or went behind each others’ backs in any way. Hence why she felt like she could take a look inside the envelope since she didn’t even read the name on it first.

She unfolded the paper which looked like it’s been read before and started reading it herself. It was obviously a legal letter of sorts but she didn’t know much about those so she didn’t care much until she went to put the paper back to where it was that she stopped abruptly. A name caught her eye and she re-opened the paper.

There it was, in bold, both Harry’s and Camille’s full names.

She didn’t know any legal terms but what she’d gathered from the letter was that Harry waiving something something house something something and lots of numbers.

At that moment, Y/N pierced everything together and her body felt like it was on fire.

Harry, her boyfriend of two years, who was also upstairs in their shared bedroom, had paid for Miss Rowe’s Los Angeles mansion.

Now, she didn’t know what her house looked like but according to the numbers on the letter, it wasn’t a simple three bedroom house.

She threw the letter on the sofa and ran upstairs. Part of her was trying to be calm because you know what, she was an adult! That being said, this was massive. Huge! Her boyfriend was paying for her ex girlfriend’s house.

She didn’t care that it was his ex girlfriend. She just hated the fact that he never ever thought of mentioning this to her. Because he knew how crazy it would sound.

“Y/N? It’s nearly seven,” Harry caught her from her shoulders before they came toe to toe.

She shrugged his hands off and took a second before deciding on how to go from there.

Harry watched her with curiosity since she looked like she was holding back an ear piercing scream which- she somehow was. Her mouth was twitching and he could tell that she was grinding her teeth.

“Is there anything you want to tell me?” she asked but didn’t stop there:

“No, fuck it. When were you going to tell me how much of a sneaky bastard you were?” she watched as his mouth opened and closed in shock.

“What?”

Y/N wanted to slap herself. She wanted to stump her feet and cry and she wanted to puke.

“You’re a sneaky bastard. You paid for her house?” a sarcastic laugh left her mouth as she kept going.

“You actually paid for her house and you didn’t think of mentioning it to me? I mean, I don’t even give a fuck if you were still friends with her. Or met up with her. You know I’m fine with it. I don’t give a fuck. But paying for her house?”

“Y/N-”

“No. Don’t. This is big, Harry. This is fucked up. You went behind my-”

“It’s not like we’re poor so we won’t have any money left!” his tone matched hers now and it made Y/N angrier.

They were stood in the middle of their corridor, Y/N in nothing but her knickers and the blouse she wore to work today and Harry with only his trousers on.

She felt herself getting sweatier by the second.

“You’re a fucking joke. You think I’m angry because you spent money? I’m not your mother, I don’t care what you spend your money on, you muppet. It’s the fact that you never mentioned this to me. You realise how big this is?” She tried passing his lanky body but he grabbed her arm.

“Look, I’m sorry. I was going to mention it to you, I was waiting for the appropriate time!”

“Appropriate time?! Are you fucking with me? There’s nothing you could say to make this better, just get out of my face. I don’t want to look at you. I’m serious”

“Y/N, please. Just- let’s just sit down and talk-”

She finally went past him, right into the bedroom as she looked for something to cover her bare legs. Harry didn’t make any sound as he possibly waited for her to come out and have a ‘proper’ chat but it wasn’t going to be that easy. She didn’t even want to hear his voice. After she was successfully dressed in a pair of old joggers, she grabbed Harry’s checkered jacket from the rack, opened the door and passed Harry as he followed her like a puppy down the stairs.

His silence spoke volumes; he knew he was guilty so he opt for silently following his girlfriend around as she collected her phone and her bag.

“Where are you going? You know we never leave this house without talking it out!” He finally spoke, his voice cracking a tad.

She scoffed and put her trainers on. As she took the car keys to Harry’s Mercedes, he caught her arm again.

“Leave it, Harry”

“No, look at me,”

“Fucking leave it! Go and have a look at your other documents in case you find another statement that shows how much you paid for her car. Don’t call me”

the best thing is you

just jake, amy, and their favourite things about being parents

There are a lot of things Jake loves about being a dad: stealing his kid’s food when he can’t finish his plate, sleepy cuddles before bed, putting on voices for all the characters in his books, and wearing matching Adidas Superstars. But if he had to pick his absolute favorite number one thing, playing with Sam’s toys would come out on top.

Luckily, their apartment is filled with toys, organised by type, colour and size into various bins and baskets and labelled (Santiago Style!) so he always knows where to put stuff during tidy-up time. If Jake so much as accidentally puts one red Lego block in the yellow Lego container, Sam tuts, rolls his eyes and snitches on him to Amy later.

He has lots of toys but it’s not like he’s spoiled or anything; Amy has a big family and he gets a lot of hand-me-downs. Amy helps him write thank you cards every time he receives a new toy, they constantly remind him how lucky he is and donate his unwanted items to less lucky girls and boys.

(During one decluttering sesh, he puts his favourite truck in the giveaway pile for another kid to play with and Amy almost cries. They’re biased, but they’re pretty sure that Sam is the best kid ever).

They re-enact Ninja Turtles scenes with his action figures, roam the apartment with his dinosaurs and play shop (which consists of Sam selling Jake tinned goods that he already owns).

Both Jake and Sam’s favorite thing to play is the appropriately titled Detective Daddy game.

In short, Jake wears his badge and a tie (even over his t-shirts because, as he explains in his Grandpa Holt voice that never fails to make Sam fall over in a fit of giggles, wearing a necktie in the workplace is very important) and interrogates the three year old until he confesses to his crimes.

It usually goes like this.

“Princess Mommy has been kidnapped!”

Dramatic gasp.

“And I think you took her.”

“Me?” He clutches his chest, feigning innocence.

“I found her tiara in your bedroom, I checked the baby monitor security footage and you weren’t where you said you were and most incriminating of all, I found your fingerprints on her Amy water bottle.”

“My name’s Amy!”

(He often confuses the fact that they share one of the same names and thinks his name is Amy, not Santiago. It’s kind of adorable).

“I checked your file,” he brandishes a manila folder he stole from work and drops it on the dining room table, “and your name is Samuel.”

He gasps again. “I didn’t do it, Officer!”

“Just admit it,” Jake growls playfully, leaning forward to intimidate the suspect.

Sam climbs onto the table and closes the gap all the way, booping his nose against Jake’s and making him break character for half a second.

“Admit you kidnapped Princess Mommy,” Jake insists, tickling him until he finally surrenders.

“I did it! I did it!” He cries. “I kidnapped Princess Mommy and Queen Karen!”

Cue Jake a dramatic gasp from Jake this time.

“You’re going to jail for a long, long, long, long, long, long time!”

Jail is a pillow fort in the corner of the room.

(It’s actually cosy and super comfortable; Sam sent Jake there one time when he played the role of detective the morning after Jake had worked a night shift and he may have fallen asleep until his son decided to jump on him to wake him up so they could have more fun).

Jake scoops the dangerous(-ly cute) criminal into his arms and throws him in pillow fort prison, then rescues his Princess and Queen from the couch.

Sam can’t get enough of cop related games. It warms both Jake and Amy’s hearts that he’s so proud of what they do; it makes all the late nights and time away from him totally worth it.

Victor and Camila buy him a Police Station Lego set for Christmas and, after constructing it with mommy and daddy, it sits pride of place on top of his dresser next to a framed picture of the three of them. The next time he visits the Ninety-Ninth precinct he brags to Rosa, Charles and all the uniformed officers about how his police station is way cooler than theirs.

That very Christmas, he plays cops and robbers for the first time and kicks Santiago cousin butt. Amy high fives him in front of her brothers, thrilled that Sam is continuing her legacy of being the best at the game.

Jake will come up with elaborate (kid friendly) cases that Sam is obsessed with, for example, “oh no! Someone stole a pizza from Sal’s and is getting away!”

“Not Sal’s!” Sam cries because even at three years old, he is aware that Sal’s is the best pizza place in Brooklyn. Like father, like son.

He chases his police cars around the living room, making siren noises and eventually cutting the bad guy’s car off before he can escape towards the bedrooms down the hall.

(They’re going out for a walk when their elderly neighbour offers him one of her grandson’s fire engines that he’s got too old for. Sam declines because firefighters are for losers and the FDNY suck. Amy shoots her an embarrassed smile and herds Sam away).

When it’s time for bed and all the toys have been put away, Jake tells him the story of how a cool, leather jacket-wearing detective married the youngest female Sergeant in the history of the Nine-Nine.

Sam asks to hear it again every night.

There are a lot of things Amy loves about being a mom: baking chocolate muffins and pretending not to see when he steals some of raw mixture (even though he has chocolate all round his mouth), sleepy cuddles before bed, singing to Disney hits at the tops of their voices and trying not to cry when he brags about his mom being the youngest female Sergeant in the history of the Nine-Nine to everyone they meet. But if she had to pick her absolute favourite number one thing, teaching Sam to read and write and count would come out on top.

She was always good at school. She got the highest grades. She loved crawling into her dad’s lap and reading to him, glowing under his constant praise. She didn’t need any help with the big words unlike Tony and it wasn’t long before her teacher advised that she skip fourth grade.

She studied Art History at college, topped her class, and was the best in her group of recruits at the Academy, too.

As her brothers started having kids, she loved helping them read and, as they got older, helping them with homework. She especially loved when they would confide in her that she’s smarter than their dads. Beating her brothers, even as an adult, was still her greatest joy. Until she fell in love and had a kid of her own and beating her brothers was demoted to third spot.

The Santiago genes are just as strong in Sam.

He’s like Jake in a lot of ways: his dark, unruly curls, his nose, his sense of humour, his penchant for dramatic reveals.

(Running into their room at 5am shouting, “Mommy! Daddy! I didn’t wet the bed last night!”, for example).

But he is smart. Santiago-level smart.

He learns to count to twenty before all his friends, is a super reader and bilingual.

Amy has been singing him Spanish lullabies since he was a newborn, teaching him his “Por favor”s and “Gracias”s, whispering “Te amo” as she kisses him goodnight. She cries so hard the first time he says it back.

It’s very important to her that he can speak Spanish so they have  lessons with daddy on Tuesday nights. She buys a textbook and makes them sit opposite her at the dining room table like they’re actually in school.

“¿Cuántos años tienes?” She asks him after their first lesson.

“Tengo tres años,” he responds with a proud smile that has Amy gathering him into her arms and smothering him with kisses.

Rosa has been teaching Jake Spanish for a couple of years but his brain is so full of case details and Die Hard quotes that Sam quickly surpasses him, joining Amy on her side of the table.

“Tell mama she’s pretty,” he instructs.

He furrows his brow, immediately looking to Amy for help.

“Luces bien.”

“That was it!” He snaps his fingers. “Luces bien, Ames.”

She blushes, tucks her hair behind both her ears and flicks to the next page of the textbook. She’s only in one of his hoodies and leggings, she’s not even sure when she last washed her hair, but her husband makes her feel beautiful. Always has done, right back to the time he said her dress makes her look like a mermaid.

Along with Spanish, she teaches him basic geography. He knows that Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, that Havana is the capital city and can draw the flag with his crayons. He shows off to Camila the next time they visit and earns himself an extra cookie.

He can write his name, too, and she remarks that at age three his penmanship is already better than Jake’s.

(Jake sticks his tongue out at her, even if it’s true).

Distressed fashion: making sense of pre-ripped clothes | Fashion

The idea of pre-distressing clothes – purposefully ripping, tearing or slashing threads even before being sold – has been around for years. There are jeans that look like they’ve been run over by a lawnmower, T-shirts that look like they’ve had a packet of cigarettes put out on them and hoodies that look they’ve been nibbled by a rabbit.

So it takes a lot for an item of distressed clothing to make the internet prick its collective ears up. Recently, a pair of Maison Margiela trainers, complete with “heavy distressing” – read multiple rips and tears – on sale for $1,425, did just that. Twitter howled with derision. Before them came a pair of jeans from New York based luxury denim brand PRPS, complete with a “caked-on muddy coating” and a $425 price tag.

Although dropping a few grand on a pair of mangled trainers might sound like the extreme behaviour of a dedicated follower of fashion, the trend can be spotted everywhere at the moment. Gigi Hadid looks out from the cover of September’s Vogue Korea wearing a pair of jeans ripped at the knee. Ashley Graham, Gisele Bündchen and Zoe Saldana have all recently stepped out in the Harlow Destroyed BFF Tee, yours, complete with neck tear, for $72 (£55).

Harvey Nichols group fashion director, Anita Barr, is calling the trend “one of the biggest in menswear for AW17” – they are adding three new brands that offer up distressing, including LA-based Amiri, which decorates T-shirts by shooting bullets through them. New face of Calvin Klein Paris Jackson appeared on the red carpet at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in May in a “Michelle my Belle” T-shirt peppered with holes. Michelle Obama wore distressed jeans (the gateway garment – after all, ripped jeans are so mainstream, even Carol Vorderman has been wearing them for years) wandering around Rome this summer.

It’s a look that’s big on the high street, too. Nick Tahir, head of menswear buying at River Island says it’s been one of their “biggest trends of the last few seasons”. Head of womenswear buying, Leanne Sabatino, says that for the new season River Island has increased its “offering to include nibbled/slashed pieces”, and that, in denim, there has been a “definite uplift in the demand for distressed clothing versus 2016”. Search “distressed” on Asos and hundreds of items come up.

The look might have a habit of jumping the shark: in 2014, Adidas brought out a pair of trainers covered in “handcrafted mud” and in the same year, Japanese denim brand Zoo Jeans championed jeans that had been pre-torn by lions, tigers and bears – oh my.

But the art of ageing clothes has its roots deeper than just fake mud – rips and holes are as synonymous with DIY punk fashion as safety pins and pink mohawks. The grand dame of the punk era, Vivienne Westwood, made clothes with intentional stains, rips and missing arms. And in the 80s, Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo forged pieces from faded cottons, sun-baked silks and boiled woollens. In 1982 she decorated a jumper with several gaping holes and called the look “Comme des Garçons lace”. Dutch avant garde designer Martin Margiela, known for his so-called “le mode destroy”, championed distressing.

In the 90s, the grunge movement fed into fashion with tatters and knitwear that looked like moths had been feasting on it. In 1993 Hussein Chalayan buried a collection in his friend’s garden and left it to decay for months. The 1995 collection seen by some as the “show that launched Alexander McQueen’s career” featured white angular-shouldered jackets, shirts and silky dresses with tyre marks on them – one of the models even had tracks running across her body. Later in the decade, Robert Cary Williams became known for his bullet-holed T-shirts. David Bowie wore one in Italian Vogue, Sting ordered five. For the likes of Chalayan, it was akin to conceptual art – as much about the process as the product.

It’s purpose, says Tony Glenville, creative director at London College of Fashion, might be to do with (faux) authenticity: “I think there’s a vague feeling about integrity.” Kanye West creative director and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh, whose designs often feature holes, has been quoted in Vogue as saying it’s about the fact that “no one wants to look like they’re trying too hard.”

For Charlene Lau, a post-doctoral fellow in material and visual culture at Parsons School of Design, in the case of garments such as the Amiri T-shirts, there’s the idea of “street credibility, or the gangster culture associated with that”. And, looking to punk, she says “there’s still an element of rebellion, even if you are buying something that is pre-distressed – pre-ripped or made dirty.”

It can also, she thinks, be about status. Where over a century ago Norwegian-American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen coined the phrase “conspicuous consumption” – the idea of excessive spending on wasteful goods as “evidence of wealth” – in his 1899 book The Theory of the Leisure Class, Lau links the distressed look to “inconspicuous consumption”; flashing lots of cash, but not – at least on a very surface level – looking like you have. In the modern age, consuming conspicuously is no mean feat – luxury lines have more affordable offshoots, knock-offs look increasingly authentic and many high-end labels ape the everyday. And so paying hundreds of pounds for mangled, or muddy, jeans becomes – in a topsy turvy way – the height of luxury.

But the look has come under understandable fire for the morally problematic idea of “dressing poor”. In a 2010 thesis, Kate Louise Rhodes describes how “the wearer can choose to dabble with the look of poverty while simultaneously adding to his or her symbolic waste” given that the distressed look “adds labour intensive ornamentation … that require further processing and manual labour to create them.” Responding to the PRPS muddy jeans, Mike Rowe, the former presenter of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs and an advocate for the value of skilled trades, wrote a Facebook post that has been liked over 21,000 times. He notes that the jeans “foster the illusion of work. The illusion of effort… They’re a costume for wealthy people who see work as ironic.”

So if this is a look that is forever bubbling, why might it be particularly turbo-charged right now? It’s all too tempting to draw a line between violent times and bullet-hole T-shirts, for one. And between an age where fewer people are doing the kinds of manual jobs that make for dirty jeans, and fake-mud.

What we are seeing today compared to what’s gone before is, according to Glenville, “much heavier-handed … a slight overstatement”. For Glenville, “I think now people are looking at really distressed clothes that are filthy with oil or mud strains, or shoes that look like they’ve been through a cattledrive, I think it’s to really make that statement.” It is, he says, “very hard to shock anybody… we’ve done fashion shoots on car crashes … what else do you do?” Well, he proffers: “Perhaps the idea of wallowing in filth, and actually getting your hands dirty, is the biggest shock for fashionistas you can imagine.”
