Exactly, the idea that you are willing to sacrifice everything. God, heaven, religion, EVERYTHING, all for your love, for the person who lost everything to evil, who's innocence has been tainted. But you don't care, because they are your love, you will walk backwards to hell, while staring god in the face because they are your love.
That, is beautiful, and that's why johnathan harker is the best husband in any fiction, because he will do ANYTHING for mina
The thing is “My love becomes a vampire so I’ll become one too to stay with her” can’t hit the same anymore. It’s become just a “ooh being a vampire would be sexy!” or “yay we get to live forever!” romantic thing versus the most defiantly heretical devotion that would make the paper it was written on burn. There’s no “ooh~ vampires~” but rather being willing to join everything you fear and dread the most, that once shattered your mind to endure.
It also just can’t hit the same without that backdrop of severe Victorian social mores one dare not set a foot outside, and a lifetime of being bound by them. Or without the certainty that heaven is real, and you’re willing to bar yourself from it for eternity if your love isn’t granted entrance.
This is gothic Romance with a capital R at its pinnacle and I’m never going to stop thinking about it

Does Jonathan and Mina have any opinions (good or bad) on the way Jermey and Maddie dress, based on their Victorian standards or their own fashion senses?
As Mina died in the early-50's, and adopted through her life an outlook of uncompromising open-mindedness, she's allowed herself to feel quite at home in Maddie's clothes. Maddie dresses comfortably and practically, with plenty of cardigans and tights and sensible shoes for the chilly Foundation Archives; nothing beyond what Mina wouldn't already have encountered.
Jonathan meanwhile, who died in the 1890's and has an even larger gap of time between himself and Jeremy, is trying his best not to feel baffled by the clothes of today. Jeremy escaped Whitby in a business suit, at least, which bears some resemblance to Jonathan's old wardrobe, but aspects are off. Where is the hat? Where is the waistcoat? Why can't he detach his collar? Where is Mr Larkin's undershirt?
He does have a vampiric head to worry about, which overrides the clothing somewhat, but the familiar-unfamiliar interplay is not helping him adapt.

[Image description taken from alt: Image 1: A shot of Quincey with his arms resting on the table. He looks to the side, raising one eyebrow as he says, “There’s somethin’ I don’t get. Why’s the professor so tight-lipped about it all? With a story like that, he’d be known the world over.” Image 2: Jekyll glances awkwardly to the side, saying, “I hesitate to discuss it in…mixed company.” Mina gives Jekyll an earnest look, placing one hand over her heart as she says, “I assure you, Doctor, it will go no further than this room.” Image 3: Jekyll, still avoiding eye contact with everyone, flushes slightly as he speaks. “Very well. To put it delicately, the French are…somewhat more liberal on certain matters than the English. I believe the professor was…very fond (italics) of the captain.” Image 4: Griffin twiddles a pencil in one hand and says, “It would take a lot more than fondness to keep a secret like that! Maybe bribery? Blackmail?” Irene gives him an amused look. “He means they were in love, Griffin,” she says. Griffin responds, “Ohh! (italics) Then why didn’t you just say (italics) so?” Image 4: Jekyll looks very uncomfortable, standing stiff and tense and blushing even more than before. “I, er, I felt it was…I mean…I didn’t wish to shock anyone…” he stammers. Image 5: Mina smiles at him, hands folded in front of her, and says, “That is hardly a shock, Dr. Jekyll. That is, let’s say I have encountered it before.” Jekyll raises an eyebrow, replying “Who would you (italics) know…” He trails off. Across the table from Mina, Quincey gives Jekyll an appraising look. Image 6: Quincey places his hand on top of Arthur’s, smiling fondly at him. Arthur smiles back and blushes. Quincey says, “Oh, she knows a few.” Jekyll, looking surprised, says, “I-I see.” Image 7: Griffin leans forward over the table, pointing his pencil at Arthur and saying, “Wwwait, you two—?” Arthur smiles at him, responding, “Three, once we save Jack.” Quincey’s hand is just visible in frame, fingers interlaced with Arthur’s. Image 8: Jekyll, still looking taken aback, says, “I see…Lord Godalming, Mr. Morris, your secret is safe with me.” Quincey grins at him and rests his chin on his hand; his other hand is still interlaced with Arthur’s. “Much obliged, Doc. Now, this Captain Nemo…” he says, trailing off. Offscreen, Griffin blurts out, “All three of you!? (italics) You’ve certainly kept things under tight wraps since I’ve been here…” End description.]

Perhaps the FUNNIEST part of Dracula 1992 by Francis "abusing women on set builds character!" Coppola is when Mina screams at Dracula "You killed Lucy!" and in the exact same conversation she begs him to turn her into a vampire because she simply cannot live without him. Girl there's better pacing in destiel omegaverse fanfics

Mina: "Alright, everyone pinkie swear right now to put Vampire Me down if I hop the line between death and undeath."
Van Helsing and the Suitor Squad: "Depressing, but sure, absolutely."
Jonathan:
Mina: "...Jonathan?"
Jonathan: "Yes?"
Mina: "Will you promise to slay me if I get vampire'd?"
Jonathan: "Mina, I will not lie to you."
Jonathan:
Mina: "Jonathan. I need you to look me in the eye and promise to murder me martyr-style if I get too undead."
Jonathan: "Fine. I can promise to kill."
Mina: "Me? Vampire me?"
Jonathan, making unbroken eye contact with the four guys who just promised to behead and impale his wife if she stops being human enough: "I guarantee there will be killing involved if Vampire You happens."

The real reason we need a book accurate Dracula movie is so Mina can sweep everything off a table and lay out a map and her journal and explain how she knows Dracula is on the river on October 30th.
#dracula daily#dracula#mina harker#god I fell so hard for her during that scene#fell for Jonathan when he hit Dracula with a shovel#fell harder when he slashed him with a knife#fell for Quincy when he ran off to shoot the bat#and Arthur when he brought the dogs along#god these characters are so much fuuuuuunnn

[Image description taken from alt: Image 1: Jonathan stands hand in hand with Mina on the deck of a ship, both dressed in winter clothes. Around them rages a storm, with rain driven at a harsh angle and sea spray churning around them. Lightning flashes in the back. Mina looks off to the side with a worried expression, hair streaming around her face in the wind. Jonathan’s eyes glow intense white as he looks towards the viewer. Image 2: A back view of the Harkers, now looking up to a dark shadow looming in front of them. It is vaguely man-shaped, with gleaming red eyes. Lightning streaks across the sky behind it. Hands begin to emerge onto and from the deck of the ship, grasping at the air or reaching towards the Harkers. Image 3: The shadow solidifies into Dracula, who dives towards Jonathan with fangs extended like a snake’s. Jonathan looks up at Dracula in terror, forced nearly flat as he and Mina draw away from him. Mina’s face is no longer visible. Disembodied hands and arms clamber over the railing of the ship and surge around Dracula like a wave, reaching for and grasping at Jonathan. Image 4: A close-up view of Jonathan and Mina as Dracula and the hands close around them. Dracula’s claws dig into Jonathan’s neck as he leans in to bite him, but Jonathan turns away from him to look in fearful worry towards Mina. He cups her face with one gloved hand and exclaims, “Mina? Mina!” Mina sags with her cheek against his hand, eyes rolling back as her face goes lax. A scar shaped like a cross and circle has appeared on her forehead. The hands claw and grip them, dragging them down as the waves surge around them. In the sea spray, the shout, “Harker!” is just visible. Image 5: The scene changes to Jonathan lying in bed on his side, one hand clutching his pillow. His hair is disheveled and his face tense as he mutters, “Mina…Mina…” A hand comes from offscreen to shake his shoulder, and a voice shouts, “Harker, wake up!” Image 6: A view from behind Jonathan shows him pushing himself into a seated position in his darkened room. Jack leans close to him, asking, “Are you alright?” Jonathan stammers, “I-I…” In the doorway, Captain Nemo is silhouetted against the light; his eyes have a hint of red to them reminiscent of Jonathan’s nightmare. He interrupts, saying, “You’ll pardon the intrusion, gentlemen…” Image 7: Nemo stands with one arm folded behind him, holding Jonathan’s journal in his other hand. With a mild expression, he says, “…But you’ll agree it is necessary once we’ve spoken.” End description.]

Remember the bit in the book that's like -
Jonathan Harker: The only good vampire is a staked vampire.
Mina: I got bitten. I'm turning into a vampire.
Jonathan: No. We're turning into a vampire. Satan here we come.

Bram Stoker wrote Mina Harker phenomenally then everyone else has been trying to "fix her" and falling flat on their face tripping over their own clown shoes
