It’s been a while since I’ve done a proper check in/took notes about the garden. The tomatillos are doing alright, wilting every 2 or 3 days so I’m trying to keep up with the watering. Tomatoes need to go into grow bags. Potatoes have pest damage and look like they’ll be ready to harvest within the next 2 months.

I got into a staring match with the damn squirrel, and while I don’t have the guts to kill it, it does piss me off. It’s eaten leaves off the green beans (which I still got some harvest from), peppers, okra, edamame, etc and I think it’s stunting all their growth.

The okra and watermelon is going so slow, and I had to resow the watermelon actually, and there’s the pest damage - it’s admittedly frustrating, but it is my first time growing these plants. The sunflowers grow quickly though and that gives me a sense of progress.

Bed 1 still looks the best just because it’s filled. On the positive, the two surviving zinnia plants look good, I’ll pinch them off once they grow a few more inches. Struggling with the edamame - the red basket is an attempt to keep the squirrel out, though it blocks too much sun. The Japanese eggplant is doing very well thankfully. Peppers at also getting chomped so haven’t set much fruit yet. I think the borage is choking out the surrounding plants, need to cut it back a lot again. I’m also struggling to direct sow cucumber, they don’t survive past the first leaves, so I’ve sown indoors in a paper pot in the hopes of transplanting when it gets big enough to compete.

In bed 4 I removed the snapdragons (lord of rust) and planted cosmos and dahlia tubers I got on sale. I was feeling very sad and wanted some flowers.

It’s actually been a bit overcast this month but little rain, temps in the 70s on average. As usual, the garden feels a bit behind schedule - I could hypothetically be harvesting a bunch of stuff or much further along if I had started earlier.

Feels on-time: potatoes, tomatillos, green beans, sunflower, watermelon (I trust it’ll grow faster in June)

Plant could’ve be bigger: okra, cucumber, edamame, peppers (Greg Alder’s post says late May is best time for transplanting; they grow faster so less bug damage)

Could have been harvesting: eggplant (an early crop from the overwintered plants, if I transplanted them earlier), cherry tomatoes, flowers, STRAWBERRIES and other berries

I guess it’s not that bad then. If I really wanted to, I could’ve kept more broccoli and greens growing now, and if the onions/garlic were still in, they’d be getting pretty big and juicy for a June harvest. The poppies are going to seed, and I love the colorful assorted wildflowers we had growing in that one corner. I hope they go to seed and come back next year.

Hello everyone I am glad to inform you that after a long absence, I still found the strength to continue working. There will be many changes and here are the main ones:

1. The assortment will become wider, tutorials on sewing toys and paper crafts will be on sale.

2. LamaCrossSitch will be called Smasterilli. It was the name of my second store on Etsy. I decided to choose it so as not to limit myself only to cross-stitch.

3. I will have my own website. While technical work is being carried out on it. But I plan to finish working on it within a few weeks.

4. You can buy embroidery on Boosty and "Buy Me a Coffee" websites. In the meantime, I'm working on filling these sites. I'll write as soon as it's ready.

5. The assortment will include physical kits in the future.

There's paperwork and everything, that's my weirdo.

They both think its a stupid idea at first. Big, fussy weddings are a waste of energy, time, and money. They don't need to make some big announcement about it, they already know they're committed to each other.

But then they realized they can put anything they want on the gift registry. There isn't a law that says it can only be shit from Bed, Bath & Beyond. It could be a new microscope, a year's worth of tea, or a non-flammable waffle iron.

Hange thinks of how it would be great time to make Levi dance and take cute pictures. Levi knows how happy a wedding would make his mom. He also sometimes thinks about how beautiful Hange would look with white flowers in her hair and how she would smile before he leans in to kiss her.

He kind of likes the idea of saying ‘that’s legally my weirdo.’

But they hum and hah over the idea, going back and forth between the pros and cons of the concept of marriage. Hange has made more than a few diagrams and slide shows. Levi nods during her presentations, taking notes. They both learn a lot about the history of the modern concept of marriage in their part of the world. Hange digs around to learn about marriage through the lenses of different fields. She likes to have the whole enchilada before making big decisions. As she puts it, you can't make sound decision before there's a whole lot of enchiladas cookin' in the kitchen.

There isn’t anything wrong with the idea of them getting married, but nothing ever gets decided.

Then one day, Levi is walking through downtown Sina, to pick something up for Kuchel, when he pauses at a window. There, on a plastic hand, is the first ring he has ever seen that might just be able to survive Hange. He goes inside and stands there, looking nervous and uncomfortable, until a sales assistant asks if he would like to look at something. He hopes he doesn't sound as unsure as he feels when he asks about the ring in the 3rd window.

The sales assistant nods and asks what he likes about it, he laughs and says it looks hard to break. She smiles and leads him to a table.

It's even prettier up close, he realizes, as he holds in between his fingers. Beautiful and sturdy, not unlike the person who's finger this ring would sit beautifully on.

Hange is messy, loud, and enthusiastic about everything; she can't enter a room without drawing attention or leave a room like she found it. But she is so kind, caring, and gentle (and patient, and funny, and brave, and brilliant). She sparkles all day and smolders during the night. He smiles to himself and imagines her waving happily at him with this ring on her finger.

He walks out of the store an hour or so later, hands a little clammy. Inside of his pocket there is a small maroon box and a stack of warranty papers. Inside the box there is a silver ring with small sparkling diamonds set flush into the band; nothing to get broken off or snagged on something. It has small indents along one side, where another ring will go, fitting together like a puzzle piece. They can choose the next band together and get a matching one for him. He stops mid-step in the middle of the street, looking more constipated than usual.

Fuck. He's going to ask Hange to marry him.

Hange looks beautiful that evening. Its a warm summer night and Levi had dinner ready for when she got home. Her favourite meal, drinks, and music were ready to go. He was wearing a nice pair of pants, and the third shirt of the day (he sweat through the other two). She gets home and he's at the door, drink in hand, to kiss her hello. She looks over his shoulder at the patio he spent hours setting up, her eyes widen and a small smile creeps onto her lips.

He's really sweating now.

He shoves the drink into her hand and directs her to the stairs, saying to go put something nice on. If he's going to do this whole thing than they better be able to get some good photos out of it.

He's pouring himself another pina colada (her favourite) when she walks into the kitchen. She's wearing one of her brightly-coloured jumpsuits that she breaks out every summer (this one is held up by straps that tie over her shoulders, and he's had a lot of fun untying them on various occasions).

I acquired more toilet paper today! Go me! This is becoming less of an accomplishment as supply chains catch up with the needs of American bottoms, but it still feels nice, especially since it's my favorite brand. I found it at CVS so I had to pay a considerable upcharge for it,but such is life. I suspect that from this point on in my life, I will have a month's worth of toilet paper in storage at all times, along with my two weeks of food. One day the kiddo will inherit a closet full of pristine vintage TP still in the plastic packaging and think "Mom never really was the same after the 'Rona came through." But he'll never have to consider the benefits of a bidet! 

Today's trip out was to CVS and the day old bread store. The CVS trip was necessary because I had a prescription refill to pick up, and I also took the opportunity to buy very expensive toilet paper and moderately expensive milk. Everything at CVS is extremely fucking expensive unless you have the right coupons, and then it is free. Back when the kiddo was a baby and we were living on 2000 dollars a month in grad student stipend, I kept him in diapers almost solely on the grace of my couponing prowess. Back in the late twenty-teens, shows like Extreme Couponing hadn't ruined coupons yet, and if you were smart and watched the ways the stores timed their sales, you could get really, really good deals on stuff. I made it a point to never be an asshole about my coupons and let people go ahead of me in line when I had something complicated to do, but I still managed to get 80-90% off on a lot of transactions. CVS and Walgreeens were definitely the best for it. Being able to combine in-store coupons with manufacturer's coupons plus the store's own Value Bucks systems meant that in certain weeks, the store was actually paying me to shop there. Most of the time it was a matter of several complex transactions that resulted in a very unique assortment of items, but I could always donate my excess toothpaste or shampoo or soap to the food pantry. They give away that stuff too, and it is often in demand. 

Anyway, diapers are stupidly expensive and WIC doesn't cover them, so I was always on the lookout for coupons, and always buying ahead. I had a buy price and a stock up price, don't remember what they were now, but I was very serious about them. At one point half of Kiddo’s closet was stacked full of diapers in varying sizes all the way up to toddler sizes, even though he wasn't sitting up on his own yet. Oh, and that was back before Diapers.com got eaten up by Amazon too, and they were super bad about checking to see whether you really were a new user and entitled to that 40% diaper discount, so every time I got a coupon, I really went to town. Small wonder they didn't end up profitable, whoops. But my kid never went bare-butted! 

What the hell was I even talking about? CVS, right. Anyway, it truly pains me to buy anything full price at CVS, but it extends the time between full-on grocery store visits and nearly everybody was wearing a mask, so I'll take it for now. One day I shall unlock their coupony puzzles again! The day old bread store was just for bread, buns and snack cakes, quick in and out. I haven't been there in several weeks and they'd rearranged the whole store, making it a one way loop (it is a little store) with one right hand aisle and two left hand aisles. This leaves customers at the end of the only right-hand aisle with the difficult choice of whether you want to go down the aisle with the mini-doughnuts or the aisle with the peanut butter chocolate crunch bars. (the peanut butter bars are always the right choice, but it was not easy.) Got out of there in five minutes and headed home. The day old bread store is the opposite of CVS, it is always cheap and there is never a challenge. I got my $5 bags of brioche style hamburger buns for 99 cents and didn't even have to try. 

Takeout from a local restaurant for dinner, it was good even though they forgot the two bottles of their in-house ranch dressing we ordered. We'll pick it up Monday so it's not a big deal anyway. They thoroughly redeemed themselves by construing "extra feta" for two orders of greek spaghetti as meaning "basically an entire square styrofoam container of feta cheese that you may cake on your food at will." Tomorrow's lunch will be spinach and feta quesadillas, I have a recipe! After dinner the kiddo and I went outside and, rather than starting the campfire in the extremely wet firepit, we used fireplace matches to set fire to marshmallows speared on chopsticks. It would not be any good for golden toasting a marshmallow, but when all you need is for that sugar to catch fire, it's just fine. 

Today also marks the end of Book One in our Avatar rewatch. It was all very exciting, and the kiddo is very into it. I am way deep into reading Avatar fanfic right now, some of which is very good and some of which is obviously people just wanting to wrap Zuko in a blanket and carry him home. (These two things are not mutually exclusive, but there is a woobification threshold beyond which it is just hilarious.) Kiddo was baffled at the end of the last episode when I laughed and said "Hello, Azula..." because he didn't remember who she was. He'll figure it out, and probably be glad he's an only child.

Soon after Sun Myung Moon opened an account at Chase Manhattan Bank in 1973, the Korean evangelist came by to make a deposit accompanied by two women carrying large purses stuffed with an assortment of bills. It took clerks an hour to count the currency, which totaled $100,000. A Chase banker recalled the women saying that the money came from street sales of flowers by members of Moon’s Unification Church. The Moonies, who refer to their leader as “Father,” and who regard him as a manifestation of God, were zealous collectors of funds, and deposits to his Chase accounts were frequent—perhaps too frequent. In a New York City federal court last week, a jury of ten women and two men decided, after four days of deliberation, that Moon was guilty of conspiring to avoid taxes on $162,000 in personal income for the years 1973 through 1975. He faces up to 14 years in prison, $25,000 in fines and a possible deportation hearing by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Moon, 62, was convicted of failing to report as personal income $112,000 of interest on $1.6 million in his Chase accounts, as well as $50,000 worth of stock in Tong Il Enterprises, a profit-making import company that Moon controlled. Convicted with him was his top financial aide, Takeru Kamiyama, 40, who was charged with helping the evangelist prepare false tax returns to conceal the income, attempting to block the subsequent Government investigation by submitting phony backdated documents, and lying to a grand jury.

Throughout the trial, which lasted more than six weeks, the evangelist’s attorney, Charles Stillman, insisted that the cash and stocks, although held by Moon, actually belonged to his Unification Church and were therefore not subject to taxation. 

One key witness for the prosecution was Michael Warder, 35, a former church executive who now works for the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. He testified that on several occasions Kamiyama had turned down his requests to use funds from the Chase accounts for church purposes with the explanation that the bank deposits were “Father’s money . . . not accessible.”

Moon accepted the verdict impassively, but officials of his church denounced the judgment as “unjustified persecution.” The evangelist’s attorneys plan to appeal the conviction.

Moon is sentenced to 18-month term

... Mr. Moon, who would be eligible for parole after serving one-third of the sentence, was also fined the maximum of $25,000 plus the costs of prosecution. And he could face deportation proceedings.

The maximum sentence for Mr. Moon could have been five years for conspiracy and three years on each of three tax charges involved in his failure to report $150,000 in income from bank accounts and securities.

“I have treated him as I would treat anyone else,” Judge Goettel said. He also expressed his “sincere belief that the jury treated the case that way.

”The judge imposed a six-month sentence and a $5,000 fine on a codefendant, Takeru Kamiyama, one of Mr. Moon’s top aides. Mr. Kamiyama was convicted of the conspiracy charge, of assisting in the tax fraud and of lying to the grand jury. ...

Jo Ann Harris and Martin Flumenbaum, the chief prosecutors, urged the judge to treat Mr. Moon the same as “any high-ranking business executive” convicted of having used his organization to avoid personal income taxes.

In the crowded courtroom, filled with somber supporters of Mr. Moon, Judge Goettel declared that “general deterrence” called for a prison term. He said it would be unfair to free someone who could afford top lawyers when “poor people who get caught” go to jail for relatively minor crimes.

If Mr. Moon received a suspended sentence, the judge went on, millions of people would believe that “the rich and the powerful go free.”

Judge Goettel said he had received “several thousand letters” in Mr. Moon’s behalf, some from scientists, political leaders and officials of other churches expressing “fear that freedom of religion was being threatened.”

Judge Discounts Fears

“I think these fears are totally unwarranted in this case,” he continued, saying the letters indicated a misunderstanding of the issues. He added, “It is the crime that dictates the sentence more than anything else.”

The case was not limited to tax-fraud charges involving the failure to report income from bank accounts and securities, Judge Goettel said. He stressed that Mr. Moon had also been convicted of a conspiracy involving false documents, perjured testimony and obstruction of justice.

If the failure to report the income had been the only charge, a suspended sentence could be appropriate for Mr. Moon under the circumstances, the judge said. He suggested that the “the cover-up scheme” was more serious than the original offense.

The convicted tax evader and leader of the Unification Church (which claims more than 2 million followers worldwide) was bunked in the facility’s low-security “camp” area and promptly assigned to KP duty. “He’s doing menial kitchen work, like loading dishwashers, mopping floors and washing tables,” says warden Dennis Luther, who explained that the new inmate’s employment options were limited because he doesn’t speak English. “I’m not worried about conversions,” added the warden. “We don’t allow inmates to be coerced into anything by anybody, whether they’re Protestant, Catholic or whatever.”

During the day, Mr. Moon, who is 65 years old, will be free to resume his church duties. ...

When we heard how Father [Sun Myung Moon] was keeping church money in his name, the USA Headquarters warned him that in the USA the government often used the tax laws to imprison enemies that hadn’t broken any other laws. USA Headquarters advised Father not to put the money in his name, and explained the safe and proper way to bank the funds.

Father asked if what he was doing was illegal. The answer was: No, it’s not illegal, but can be twisted by the government to persecute Father and the church. Father decided to keep the money in his name.

USA Headquarters hired accounting consultants to advise the church about how to handle the funds. They told Father the same thing as our Headquarters staff had. Father’s response was the same, is it illegal. The answer was the same, “No, but…” Father decided to keep the money in his name.

At the time I didn’t know about this, so when I was asked to do Father’s taxes, I told him that he needed to have it done professionally, because in the USA, tax laws are used to put people in prison when there was no other way to imprison people. The answer came back, via David Kim, that it cost too much to do it professionally. (At the time I thought that the cost was for the accountant. Later I realized that it was to save about $5,000 dollars in taxes.) I still wouldn’t do it, so Joe Tully was recruited.  

My opinion is that David Kim was advising Father and that Father was taking his advice. At the time David Kim was Father’s chief advisor in the USA. After David Kim’s advice proved faulty he was put out to pasture doing minor missions and finally sent to UTS.

My experience has been that Father trusted early followers who had proven their loyalty more than younger members, especially when the older members were Korean.

I believe that Father was afraid that the money would somehow be stolen by someone if it was in the name of the Church rather than his name. This has happened in Korea.

Takeru Kamiyama was also jailed for his part in the crime.

At one point Kamiyama got in trouble with Moon and was exiled to Japan to lecture Divine Principle. … Kamiyama got getting dangerously close to full insurrection by pushing his version of DP – “Our Course” onto all his department staff.

Next, he was exiled to Pantanal and I’m sure that wasn’t a walk in the park, either. I suspect Kamiyama has been raked over the coals. Interestingly, he is featured in that piece on Pantanal on the Catholic site, “The Tablet” December 16, 2000:

“They gave me an aerial photo of the place, without my asking, and showed me their accounts, again without my asking. The relevance of this is that the Moonies have been accused of money laundering, drug-trafficking and arms-trading. Such allegations may be a hysterical over-reaction. On the other hand, what on earth are the Moonies doing with huge tracts of land in the middle of nowhere?

All the money for this project comes from voluntary donations, said Takeru Kamiyama, who is in charge of Puerto Leda, and he showed me the list of offerings for that year, mostly in the range of $5,000 dollars and some more than $50,000 dollars. The total came to more than $1 million. Will it be enough for what he wants to do here? When I need more I can ask for more; that is not a problem. He told me it all came from Japanese Moonie missionaries or church leaders. That’s strange, I said, how do missionaries come to earn so much money to donate in a single year to a single project? He said they asked their wives and children to contribute, and some had businesses, and of course they all had their salaries. So the church pays them salaries, which they pay back in the form of donations, he said.

The land at Puerto Leda amounts to 80,000 hectares, but of course the aerial photo only showed the immediate vicinity of the river, where the Moonies (13 Japanese, only one of whom spoke Spanish) were now constructing a living base…

… From the outside balcony, my hosts pointed out some crocodiles swimming in the river, black dots from where we were. It was all very impressive, this taming of the wilderness, and the Moonies were beginning to relax. I understand that Reverend Moon has been imprisoned in the United States, I ventured. He knows all about that, said Mr Sano of his colleague, Mr Kamiyama. He was in prison with him.

How interesting, I said. You must be very close to Reverend Moon. Were you his only colleague to be imprisoned with him? Yes, he said, and before I came here I was president of the Church in Japan.

I was impressed. You are obviously a very important person in the movement, I said. (Later a Moonie pastor from Guyana confirmed to me that Mr Kamiyama was one of the most senior Church members in the world, but now taking a much more humble position. …)

I asked many questions about that fascinating moment in the Reverend Moon’s history. It was one of six imprisonments, they told me, in various countries, and the excuse for this pure political persecution, they told me, had been that Mr Kamiyama had brought $2 million into the United States and opened an account in the name of Reverend Moon.
