Why are you so bitter all the time? Can't you lighten up?
"Who, me? Bitter? Haha, yeah, OK. That's one way to put it.
Look, not everything in this world is sunshine, bunnies and rainbows. In fact, those things are quite often the exception. Usually if you expect less from people and the world, you have less of a chance to be disappointed.
When you've been disappointed before, it's a little bit more difficult than just lightening up, as you so eloquently put it."

For her entire life, Meg had been faced with choices. It kept her awake some nights, thinking about whether her choices had been the right ones. As a young girl, the consequences of her choices hadn’t been particularly dire, but as she got older, things had become a little… stickier.
Keeping up appearances, for political reasons, had become something incredibly important as they got older. Her father became paranoid, and shortened Meg’s leash. Any attitude quickly became unacceptable, and getting away with anything was nearly impossible. Eventually, however, they gave up on her. Soon, it was only Meg and her choices, no rules or parents to hold her back.
Freedom was bittersweet. Perhaps her parents could have guided her away from Adonis, warned her about Hades, kept her safe from the dangers of the world.
Though, probably not. Her parents had never been the nurturing type, simply the overbearing and controlling type.
Ping’s silence lasted far too long. Meg folded her arms and tapped her foot on the ground as she waited for his reply, his eyes glazed over and consumed by thought. Her own expression was a mask, lips pursed and eyes hard. At his words, however, her facial muscles slackened, lips turning down ever so slightly.
a sigh
She would have scoffed, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do so. It made her too sad. There had been a point in her life when she would have laid down her own life for those she cared about. Haemon, Antigone, Adonis. But having done that already, she had been soured for any future sacrifices.
Seeing someone who was willing to risk it all for someone they loved… Well. It was almost inspiring. It was Meg’s turn to stay silent for just a touch too long, but she was searching for the correct words. This wasn’t exactly something she could just deflect like most things she talked about. This was actually an emotional subject. She had troubles speaking about these things with people she knew well, let alone complete strangers.
“Must be nice,” she finally said, “having a family worth fighting for. I - I’ll admit that I admire that.” She was telling the truth, and she had gained a newfound respect for this man, even if she wasn’t entirely sure if she trusted him.
a man's presence || Ping and Megara
No choice? Meg’s choice of words couldn’t help but strike the young recruit as fitting; he mulled them over as carefully as savoring a piece of sugar cane. For most soldiers, perhaps, the answer would have been simple. The sun rose in the east; fish lived in the water and birds in the trees; when the Son of Heaven called for troops, China answered. It was a man’s duty to defend his country, his family, his Emperor; and as for her own?
There was a saying in Juexizhen: a man served by bearing arms, a woman by bearing sons.
On the one hand—remain Mulan, send your father to war and, in return, receive his helmet and effects and a kindly letter from his commanding officer, he died with honor. On the other—
She was standing what felt like ten thousand miles from home on war business: hair cropped, breasts bound, desperately pretending to a stranger that she was Hua Ping. It was not much of a choice; to Mulan, there had been no choice to make.
It was difficult to say how many other men had spared their fathers by enlisting and, in a camp like Wu Zhong, any illusions she had ever had about the glamour of a soldier’s life were long gone. Mulan knew that some men hoped to bring glory to their family names (and their sweethearts back home); she knew that some were only here because of the deep disgrace that came with desertion, with forsaking duty and therefore honor. And still others had no father to spare, no older brother or grown son—they were in less of a position to choose than even Mulan.
She had fought tooth and nail to keep her place in Captain Shang’s company and she no longer felt certain that she would die quickly in battle. Now, Mulan knew how to fight; now, she would die fighting—but she looked forward to that day less than ever.
Yet the alternative of sitting at the loom in Juexizhen while she waited for news of her father was unthinkable.
Mulan blinked. It was at that moment that she realized that Meg was still waiting for an answer; but the hazy expression of deep thought lingered on her face. And then she drew her shoulders back a little, and cleared her throat, and was a soldier again.
”I suppose,” Ping told her, “that I fight to protect my family.” Something in his eyes almost dared Meg to scoff.

She was really only half listening. Ultimately, she didn’t, well, care all that much. She was focused on herself, something she didn’t get to do very often these days. Really, all she was listening for were red flags. If he set off any warning bells, she knew at least three escape routes from where she was standing. Not hearing any - at least, no glaring ones - she decided to indulge him a little longer. Perhaps something interesting could come from this. “Fascinating,” she muttered, nodding absently. It’s not to say she didn’t enjoy the attention. She knew she was an attractive young woman, and she often used it to her advantage, but getting that confirmation was always nice. A good boost of confidence. Plus it gave her a chance to be as aloof as humanly possible, which was always a perk. "Tribe, right. Whereabouts are you from exactly?” Still didn’t care, but pleasantries and formalities had been ground into her that it was almost second nature at this point. "It’s a Classic Greek Tragedy Lots of drama, little bit of action, right up my alley. You’re free to leave the amphitheatre at any time you like, however."
Jewel In The Rough | Megara & Cassim
The world was rather grey in his eyes. Not in the literal sense, but with age came the development of a mental film to stop him from straying. He didn’t stop for the unnecessary. That would be a waste of his time and energy. Usually, he always had some place to go. If she wasn’t as ‘fascinating’ as she claimed, then why had she distracted him from his path? Once her orchid hue had danced across his vision, everything seemed to fade in. Colors, lights, and even sounds were louder. Someone that mesmerizing had to be the opposite of a ‘nobody’. She didn’t blend in with the rest of the town. There was something about her. Something interesting enough to wake him.
Well, he wasn’t after her money, if that’s what you were thinking. “Hmh! Pleasure to meet you, Megara.” His smile grew as his strides quickened to catch up with her. “Trust me, I’m free. I’m taking my own vacation time.” His current occupation was off putting, to say the least, but he couldn’t leave out a very important fact: he was the boss. Of what? He was still working on that. He knew that if he told her the truth, the evening wouldn’t go as wonderfully as he pictured it. Cassim wasn’t exactly a straight shooter. He had to be smooth, cool, confident; and hey, he still looked pretty good, didn’t he? “To answer your question, my tribe and I are just passing through on our way home. We stopped for rest and I was able to catch up with an old friend earlier this morning…and now I’ve found myself going to a show. Question is,” He glanced towards her. “What exactly will we be seeing? Not that I truly mind, just curious.”
He hoped it wasn’t some dame-play. She was worth sitting through one, but the dramatics made him laugh at inappropriate times. Some of those people were terrible actors.
