Okay so I'm rewatching The Great (Hulu/Prime) because season 3 came put at some point beyond my sight, and I've just reached episode 7 of the first season.

This episode shows Peter The Not Quite Adequate showing a newfound interest I'm science, and as he is more than a bit of an idiot he goes about it in an... unorthodox fashion.

At about the midpoint he fires a frog out of a pistol at Arkady (who is slightly less than fully enthused) but beforehand says "Can anything be shot from a gun?"

A basic but undoubtedly curious question, which is followed by a live experiment (emphasis on 'live')

"And if it lives, have we invented a new form of travel?"

To us nowadays this is a ridiculous thing as much as it may have been to his audience.

However... this, is fucking ROCKET SCIENCE.

He discovered to himself gravity earlier, and the function of a parachute which slows descent. A force which acts against the constant force all we on earth experience.

Did he wonder then, about the force behind the shot of a gun? How it propels an object forward for a time despite the force of gravity?

This is such an inane thing, and yet again I say this is fucking ROCKETRY.

Xander Harris from Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a genuinely great fascinating character even though I'm not entirely sure how much Joss Whedon understood what was great and interesting about him.

Like he's a genuinely fascinating portrait of a teenage boy who's generally well meaning and has a strong sense of compassion but has a massive chip on his shoulder and shitty upbringing and some shitty engrained beliefs in his subconscious and a general teenage immaturity. All of which gets in the way of said compassion.

A man with a toxic idea of masculinity and horribly low self esteem having to make peace with the fact that he's not the hero and he doesn't date the girl he initially has a crush on and that the role he's meant to have is the traditionally non-masculine role of emotional support and that's a great thing to be.

Can we stop with all the characters that do anything not to be alone with their thoughts for more than 5 seconds?

Like I get it, it's relatable, but how about characters that confront that shit? Not an accidental "oh the plot pushed me through to an epiphany so I'm better now" but someone who actively puts in the effort to /want/ to get better, to heal.

You can't expect life to just happen in such a way that one day you'll get over it. You have to try, you have to work. All these characters who're all fucked up is great representation or whatever, but the fact that every single damn one of them is resolute to allow themselves to be stuck there is attributing to the romantization of mental illness.

I'm not saying don't have these characters at all, but throw in a few who refuse to give up forever.

Okay so I was gonna go on about how this guy doesn't know the word spectrum, or fuckin scale, even; or generally his lack of ability to be concise and properly communicate the ideas he wants to propose which inherently undermines his whole "I'm better because I know more than you and can do the talk better" (he can't because he fails to express his views in an understandable or even basically interactable way)

I'm posting about Xander a lot but throwback to that episode where buffy and the rest of the team are fully fighting another apocalypse but that's just background to Xander fighting zombies trying to straight up bomb the school.

He accidentally busts in on Buffy and Angel having a "I can't love without you" moment™ and then we just leave again with Xander.

Like Abed are you just constantly having adventures in the background type shit.

It's a whole actual episode happening, not a filler, but we're just following Xander struggling with his place in the group and them defeating a minor evil all by himself. Good for you.

You know sometimes I remember that Xander was hypnotized into being a soldier that one Halloween and canonically retains his memories and skills.

Then we see him with Buffy on patrol getting his bell cracked again and again, and I know they're demons with supernatural abilities but damn dude what happened?
