Hello! Just to ask about injuries, one of my characters permanently limps and is forced to use a cane to be able to walk, and even then the process is moderately slow and painful. They claim it's due to a fight with another person. And due to plot purposes, they didn't receive any sort of professional medical help.

If I may ask, what could have happened/led up to that would cause such injury to that extremity? Thanks for answering!!

Many types of injury can lead to a permanent limp and chronic pain! Any sort of broken bone or fracture that wasn’t properly treated would get that effect, as well as visual disfiguration of the limb

If it did happen in a fight as they claim, it’s very common to get a compound fracture on the tibia and/or fibula from a kick to the shins, and people will often refuse to go to the hospital after injuries from fights due to worries about the cops

If it didn’t happen in a fight, there’s many more ways to get that type of injury, such as falls, machinery accidents, car crashes, essentially any sort of high impact or blunt force trauma that would fracture or break bones in the ankle, shin, thigh, or hip would do the trick!

Hi! Medical writing questions for you :) I have a vampire character who is assaulted when she's turned, and her injuries magically heal or unheal based on how much she's feeding. While the actual injury is not super important, it's the effects of the injuries I need to get straight since they'll come back frequently. We have (probably): a left shoulder fracture, a hairline fracture or bone bruise on her left forearm from being crushed by a very strong grip, and a wrist injury from falling. She also has various skull fractures/contusions/hematomas, mostly in the back of her head. If she hadn't become a vampire there's a good chance the head stuff would have killed her.

I recognize this is a lot of info I'm throwing at you, please answer as much or as little as you'd like. No pressure.

Some of my main questions are how much she would be able to use her left arm and what the likely consequences of doing so would be. Could she use her wrist without affecting her shoulder? Could she stabilize either her shoulder or her wrist and what would that do? What would short term solutions to reduce pain look like? Also, if you have any insight on how people tend to react to any of these sorts of injuries or even how people communicate what the pain feels like, that would be very helpful. Thank you for offering this!

Okay so I love this concept so much, she would likely have very limited mobility in her left arm as any movement with those fractures can damage the muscles and skin around them, she wouldn’t be able to move anything in her left arm without injuring another part, maybe she could get by with using her wrist if the rest of her arm is completely immobilized, but it’s still risky and still painful. Consequences of moving it could include permanent nerve damage (unsure how that works with vampires but hey! You’re the author go crazy) disfiguration of the arm / shoulder, internal bleeding causing swelling and bruising of the arm, cutting off blood flow to the hand resulting in a dead hand, and of course increasing the size of the fracture, in extreme cases the bone would likely pop out of the skin

There are multiple methods to immobilize an arm, if she has more materials then she could splint the forearm (using any rigid material that’s about the length of her forearm) and then slinging her arm using a triangle bandage or bandana, if she doesn’t have these materials, then the best she can do is sling her arm with any sort of bandana or fabric (I’ll include a little boy scout diagram of how to do that) and other than painkillers and immobilizing the arm, that’s about all she can do for pain management.

Also i really like skull injuries, and considering the injuries she has she would likely have a basal skull fracture, which can cause very dark bruising around both the eyes (often referred to as raccoon eyes), bruising behind the ears, and possibly spinal fluid leaking from the ears or nose, which can be fun little signs while writing to show that her injuries are returning, she would also have visual issues, such as double vision, blind spots, or just straight up blindness, confusion, and impairments to the other senses as well

Basal skull fractures look fucking terrifying, it makes people look like death itself, which is pretty fun for a vampire. Fractures look nasty too, even if it’s not a full compound you’ll still see the bone move beneath the skin and see some real bad bruising, the shoulder would look dislocated as well. Most people seeing all that in one person would be terrified, and in terms of response to the pain it’s likely a lot of screaming followed by complete dissociation, either by the pain or by the head injury

hello! an ask about medical stuff

if someone got hit by a car badly, what are the odds of having their legs amputated but surviving? also how long would the recovery period be for that, approximately? i'm sure it depends a lot on the situation though

It does depend a lot on the situation, specifically the speed and the size of the car. Damage to the legs most often happens when a person is hit by a lower vehicle rather than trucks or SUV’s which often injure the abdomen or chest. And any speed over 60 mph (96 kmh) is almost certainly fatal, and in order to get both legs amputated the legs would have to be pretty badly mangled

The most likely scenario where this happens would be a head-on collision with a sedan going 45-55 mph (72-88 kmh), and as you’re the author you can choose whether they go under the car to get their legs crushed, or if they tumble over the car and get femur fractures upon impact. Both are possible!

Recovery time for that would be about 3-4 weeks in the hospital, and between 3 months to a year of physical therapy to be able to recover entirely and return to daily living
