For all my writers out there still using programs that steal your work to feed it to AI and such, (AHEM, GOOGLE DOCS) I highly recommend Ellipsus.

It’s still in beta, and I haven’t been using it for that long, but so far I really like it.

It feels actually tailored for writers to use, you can still collaborate/share docs, everything looks significantly more aesthetically pleasing, and it’s entirely free.

I use the browser version but I have heard you can use it on mobile. I have not tested the mobile version so I cannot speak to its quality.

(I’ve even heard through the grapevine that you can directly export your fics to A03, but I’ve not tried that yet either, lol)

The Summer Hikaru Died Chapter 7 as an Analogy for Sexual Assault

Spoilers for chapter 7 of the Summer Hikari Died under the cut and of course, TW for discussions of sexual assault

Before we begin I’d like to give a quick disclaimer that I am of the belief that there are multiple ways the scene I will be discussing can be interpreted, and that several interpretations are valid. This is just where my mind first went to when I saw it because it reminded me of my own experiences with SA. My personal experiences heavily inform this interpretation ! ! !

This post also only covers the manga because I have not seen the anime adaptation yet.

I just want to share my thoughts and perhaps spark a discussion.

Anyway, in chapter 7 of TSHD, there is a scene in which Hikaru’s “true form” of sorts tries to overtake or even kill Yoshiki after he upset him.

From the beginning, this is shown to be a reaction Hikaru has due to his intense feelings for Yoshiki. This is his reaction to being outwardly (and harshly) rejected for something he cannot help. (Aka, his love for Yoshiki.)

I am of the belief that Hikaru’s entire situation is, in a way, an allegory for queerness. But that’s a topic for a future discussion, and I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who have covered that a lot better and in a lot more depth than I ever could.

However, the “I can’t stop my feelings” is also an argument I have seen used to justify SA. (It’s part of the whole ‘they couldn’t help themself’ argument.) But that way of interpreting his words only really hit me in retrospect.

It was this panel that really gave me pause:

Yoshiki is scared. He is confused. It feels gross and weird, but it also feels good and that doesn’t make any sense because he didn’t ask for this. He doesn’t want this.

Hikaru is forcing himself onto Yoshiki and he doesn’t want it. But it’s not only that, it’s the fact that he explicitly states, “it feels so gross” but then, “it feels so…good?”

All of this combined reminds me heavily of my own experiences with this exact subject. I thought for sure it was an allegory for SA when I was first reading through it.

The aftermath stands out to me as well. Because when it’s all said and done, we get this.

Hikaru leaves, and Yoshiki is left sitting there, a single tear falling down his face. He’s left with nothing but the words, “don’t hate me.”

The truth is, Hikaru is just as upset about this whole thing as Yoshiki is. He is disgusted and he feels guilty because he loves Yoshiki, so how could he do something like that to him?

But even so, the last thing he does before leaving is ask that Yoshiki not hate him.

Something about this just feels so…icky in a way I can’t place my finger on. It’s such a selfish thing to say, especially after what he just did.

And the thing is, Yoshiki won’t hate him. Because despite what Hikaru just put him through, he still loves him. As fucked up as it is, a part of him can’t bear to let go of his dear friend even as he is directly confronted with the idea he might be some kind of monster.

When your abuser is someone you love wholeheartedly, it’s incredibly difficult to just stop loving them, even as your trust in them is completely shattered.

And I think that’s something about being a victim of SA a lot of people struggle to wrap their heads around. (And obviously not every victim of SA experiences this, but it is my experience.)

And to top it all off:

Yoshiki’s friends are able to pick up on the fact that something has happened between himself and Hikaru.

And worst of all, they don’t realize the full extent of the situation, so they think that Yoshiki should simply make up with him. In fact, they feel bad for Hikaru in this situation. Not the real victim Yoshiki.

I cannot express to you enough how often victims hear shit like this from others. Especially when the person who assaulted them was a friend or family member. Reading that just made my stomach twist.

But even with all this considered, I doubt this section of the chapter was meant to be an allegory for SA. If anything it’s closer to a sudden first kiss or ‘first time’ experience, and Yoshiki’s disgust is more so meant to exemplify internalized homophobia and general unfamiliarity than any sort of SA.

My mind just jumped to SA because of how eerily close to my own experiences this all was. I still find it to be an interesting angle to look at it from though.

On a brighter note, never have I ever been more unsettled by a manga, which means Mokumokuren is doing their job well.

It really is an amazing manga, go read it if you haven’t, just remember to stay safe.

I’m sorry but as far as I’m concerned, summer is also part of the spooky season.

It’s warm out even late into the night (at least where I’m from) so it’s perfect for campfires or wandering the woods.

A lot of critters also can be readily found roaming and there’s nothing better than a story about a spooky forest animal.

And at least when you’re a kid, you have no school, so nothing but time to be staying up late or going out creature hunting.

So can we start being a bit more spooky this summer?
