Encanto Fanfic Recommendation List
I want to collect some of the best stories I've read in one spot for easy access. The main focus is excellent writing or characterization. Updated 3-22-22.
Nos Sigue la Noche (The Night Follows Us) by Thornvale. What a beautiful work of art this story is! So many emotions when reading and the imagery is perfect. Bruno and Mirabel have a beautiful bond, the deeper plot is hinted and teased enough to be enticing, and the ending is just...wow. Two suggestions: don't read the tags (no TW, but they spoil some story elements), and if you can, keep reading from Chapter 4 to the end. Whatever you do, make sure you finish it!
Bruno from Before by UsedTobeGuest123 (usedtobeguest123). Set 7 months after the movie, Mirabel is trying to help Bruno with his surprise visions. This is an absolutely fantastic dive into their relationship and how they care for each other. The plot is the perfect balance of hurt/comfort and the characterizations are spot on. I haven't found many fics that capture Bruno and Mirabel's dynamic so accurately! Go check out her other stories as well!
The Sandman by cthene (cthene). A creative look at Bruno's powers. When Mirabel starts asking him questions about his gift, it leads to an exploration of what those powers truly mean and how to embrace it. Another fic with great characterization and depth!
The Mousetrap by archive_rat. Mirabel and the gang throw a surprise party for Bruno. This has a variety of viewpoints and a lot of layers. You can read it once, then turn around and read it again and pick up something new you missed the first time. Be sure to check out their other stories (especially Axolotl).
to something you lose by borzhone. This explores Bruno's tower moving away from his siblings and a wonderful insight into young Bruno's life. Be sure to check out their other stories; they are all wonderful!
Candlelight by ClicheJoe (ClicheJoe). Ongoing. #i would die for juan. This is a Bruno x Original Character, but it's so much more than a romance. The main character Reme is utterly engaging and unique. You could put her in any setting and I'd read the heck out of it. Per ClicheJoe's description: "Bruno needs a himbo wife with no self-preservation instincts." Boy does this deliver!
Futuro by ZenyZootSuit. Ongoing. Set after the movie as Bruno rejoins the family. You learn a lot about his past and the trials he's gone through. A great example of Bruno standing up as a tío for his nieces and nephews. Fair warning, this deals with some hard subjects; watch those tags. Angst abounds.
Tremors by Missilestorm (Missilestorm). Ongoing. Mirabel gets a gift, but it's not what she hoped it would be. Bruno, as a good tío, wants to help. Really interested to see where this ends up going, but I'm loving it so far!
One Step Away by Breanna. (My work) Ongoing. If you enjoy Bruno bonding with Mirabel before her gift ceremony, here you go! Connected moments spanning from age four up to the movie. The main focus is Bruno and Mirabel's family relationship, but the rest of the Madrigals show up as well.
Oneshots
When the Cat's Away by cheetour. Written mainly from Camilo's point of view with all the sass and snark. Here's a quote from the story: "I don’t like this place,” muttered Bruno, which wasn’t surprising, given that generally Bruno didn’t seem to enjoy spending too long standing on planet Earth." This is chock full of fun descriptions and Camilo not yet sure about his wayward tío.
The bed is a bit sandy by Yellowbirdbluetoo. This is just a lot of fun. The Madrigals keep finding Bruno asleep in strange spots.
Set in stone by WhistlingWolf13. All the hurt/comfort! Bruno hasn't gone into his room since Casita was rebuilt and Mirabel joins him for support. Along the way she learns more about what it was like for Bruno with his gift. This is a beautiful one shot on the importance of family.
To Be Seen and To Be Loved by 324b2fun. Five times that Agustín comes to Julieta to be healed. A wonderful look at Julieta's character.
Buñuelos y Bochorno by Kaleidoscope_Soundwaves. Bruno feels overwhelmed at a fiesta and retreats to his room. His siblings aren't going to let him be on his own. So sweet to see Bruno interacting with his sisters!
After the Fall by Bostonian_Girl85. A look at Bruno’s thoughts when Casita crashes and he goes to find Mirabel. How did he know where to look? And where’d the horse come from?
A Little Wasted Time by UsedTobeGuest123 (usedtobeguest123). This is a sweet look at Mirabel and Camilo's relationship and touches on some of his struggles. Also, fun primo y prima stories!
Welcome to Casita Tours! by Breanna. (My work). The Jungle Cruise Tours meets Encanto. Bruno takes you on a tour of Casita and it's full of sass and sarcasm.
Naensut's list of recs for more wonderful ones not listed here.

Year One
Bruno had forgotten his birthday.
That wasn’t entirely true; Bruno had lost track of time. Living in the walls was easier if he didn’t pay attention to the time that was passing. Which wasn’t to say that he didn’t keep to a schedule. He learned very early on that if he wanted to keep a grip on his sanity he was going to need a routine. On Sundays, when everyone went to church, he gathered any miscellaneous supplies he needed from the house. On Wednesday nights, (Agustín had managed to convince Julieta that at least one night a week she should take a break from the kitchen), he snuck downstairs overnight and picked up any cooking supplies he needed. It was too risky to steal all his food, he had to be able to make some. He’d worked out a setup to do just that, but he had to be careful not to take too much of any one thing from the kitchen. It wasn’t exactly a starvation diet, but if anything at all went wrong and he wasn’t able to make his usual trips, he found himself making meals out of a pretty strange assortment of things. One week he’d mostly subsisted off of jam. That had been a particularly unpleasant week.

This is freaking adorable
Bruno, mi hermano
Agustín had been young enough, when Bruno started seeking him out, that it felt like he’d known Bruno his whole life.
It wasn’t true, of course. Bruno was only a few years older than Agustín, and hadn’t gotten his gift until he was five. But practically since Agustín could remember, Bruno had been appearing on the peripheries of his life. Even as a little kid, the older boy been a bit skittish, but he would show up first thing in the morning at Agustín’s house with food from Julieta, deliver it as quickly as he could, with some sort of stammering explanation that usually didn’t make much sense, and then flee back to the casa Madrigal.
Inevitably, those would be the days that Agustín would fall and skin his knees, or run afoul of bees, or, on one memorable occasion where Bruno showed up with a whole basket of arepas and a slightly haunted look, Agustín broke both wrists falling from a tree.
He’d finally sought Bruno out himself the next day.
Or, he’d tried to, anyway. It turned out that when Bruno didn’t want to be found, he was quite good at disappearing. Agustín had asked señora Madrigal where he was, but she hadn’t known. Instead, Agustín had found himself in the Madrigal’s kitchen with Julieta. He’d never met any of the family aside from Bruno, so he was a little bit startled at how at ease Julieta had been. When he told her so, she grinned at him.
“Oh, Bruno hasn’t told you yet?”
Agustin had blinked at her. “Told me what?”
She’d poked him in the chest. “Future Madrigal.” She’d told him in a conspiratorial whisper. He’d just stared at her for a moment, but by the time he managed to come up with any questions to ask, señora Madrigal had appeared in the kitchen doorway, and Julieta had shushed him meaningfully.
So he kept looking for Bruno.
Julieta had told him to try checking by the stream behind the house, so Agustín had gone there next, and found Bruno crouched by the water, holding something in his hand and talking quietly.
“Who are you talking to?”
Apparently Bruno hadn’t heard Agustín come up behind him. With a yelp, he shot to his feet, spinning to face Agustín, and missed his footing on the edge of the stream. He toppled into the water, and Agustín ran to help him up, but Bruno wasn’t really paying attention to him anymore, shaking his wet hair out of his eyes and frantically searching the stream for something.
“What are you looking for?” Agustín had asked, perplexed.
Bruno hadn’t even looked up. “A rat, about this big–” He held up his hands as though Agustín didn’t know how big rats were. “I lost her when I fell–”
Agustín still didn’t understand, but he looked. He spotted something moving downstream and ran after it. The stream was deeper here, and he slogged into the water up to his hips to scoop up the swimming rat, trying not to feel grossed out. But Bruno was right behind him, and plucked the rodent gently from his hand, talking quietly to it and offering it a crumb of something that looked suspiciously like Julieta’s cooking. Agustín decided not to ask, as Bruno carefully tucked the rat under his shirt.
“Is…she your pet?” He asked instead.
“What? Oh, no, she just likes me. There are a bunch of them, but mamá doesn’t like it when I feed them in the house, and they don’t like to stay in my tower all the time.”
Agustín blinked at him. “You have a tower?”
“Well technically it’s my room, but–yeah.” Bruno had offered him a shy smile. “Thanks for helping. I know people don’t really like rats.” He still had his hand protectively over where the rodent was hiding in his shirt. Agustín wondered if he’d forgotten they were both standing in a cold stream. It really was quite cold, and Bruno was more soaked than Agustín was.
“Sorry for startling you.”
“That? Oh.” Bruno waved his free hand dismissively. “I startle too easy, everyone says so.”
For a moment, they’d stood in awkward silence. Agustín was pretty sure this was the longest conversation he’d had with Bruno. Usually by now the older boy would have hurried off back to his house.
“What does Julieta mean I’m a ‘future Madrigal’?”
Bruno blanched. He’d already been looking a little pale from his dip in the stream, but now he looked ashen. “You weren’t supposed to know about that.”
Agustín frowned at him. “…Why not?”
Bruno still looked like he’d been slapped, and wouldn’t meet his eyes. “My mamá said it should be your decision. And Julieta’s.”
Agustín grinned. “So I marry Julieta?”
Bruno blanched all over again. “I didn’t say that,–I–”
But Agustín couldn’t stop smiling. He’d only met Julieta that day, but he was quite sure she was the prettiest girl he’d ever seen. He already loved her cooking–not to mention relying on it to stay in one piece–and he liked Bruno too. “Does that mean we’re going to be brothers?”
That seemed to stop Bruno’s mind entirely in its tracks. “What?”
“If I marry Julieta, that makes us brothers, right?”
Bruno blinked owlishly at him. Agustín was fairly sure this hadn’t dawned on him before. “Oh, yeah.”
“Is that why you always bring me food?”
Bruno shook his head. It made his wet hair bounce. “I bring you food because half the time when I have a vision it’s about you walking face-first into a bee hive.”
“And because we’re going to be brooo-theeers.” Agustín crowed.
“Stop that,” Bruno splashed stream water on him, but he was smiling. They both froze at the sound of señora Madrigal calling Bruno’s name from the house. Agustín took in the older boy’s wide eyes, and the fact that they were both still soaked, and came to a quick decision.
“I’ll distract her while you sneak inside!” He announced, scrambling out of the stream before Bruno could stop him. “Then you won’t get in trouble.” He ran towards the house without looking back, still beaming with excitement.
He’d never had a brother before.

So my brother and I were best friends growing up. He was hilarious and we got into all kinds of trouble. I still can’t believe some of the shit we got away with. Anyway I guess he had a nervous breakdown one day and accidentally killed a guy. I saw what happened and it totally wasn’t his fault. But he ran away, ranting about how his entire life was a lie or something. Turns out, he was adopted and our parents never told us. I didn’t hear from him for a few years after that. Then he just shows up at this party I’m having. He’s totally grown out his beard like some kind of mountain man. But whatever, my brother is back! So I welcome him home and he pulls this snake out of nowhere. Like, an actual snake. So I try to play it cool. Knowing my brother, this has got to be some kind of practical joke. But my buddies flip out and next thing I know, they pull out some snakes too. I’m thinking, I have to get this under control before this turns into a goddamn reptile show. But before I can say anything, my brother’s snake eats their snakes, which, okay, I guess that improves the situation? So I take my brother aside and ask him what prank he’s trying to pull. That’s when he gets all serious. He reminds me that our dad did some pretty shady stuff, which wasn’t really that big of a deal to me but I guess it was to him. He tells me to check my privilege or some shit and that I should let his people go and anyway that’s how I lost my brother to social justice.
