In this post, I'll be covering the metabolic changes that occur during pregnancy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you know that a pregnant mother goes through 2 metabolic stages during pregnancy? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of which happens in the first 20 weeks called the anabolic stage in which the mother stores glucose as glycogen and fat for later use. Also, she stores some essential minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc. All of which are essential for the fetus' growth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then, from week 21 - 40 she enters the catabolic phase of the pregnancy. This is characterized by the breakdown of glycogen as a source of energy for the fetus. Therefore, the mother will utilize fat as a source of energy to spare glucose for the fetus' growth. This change causes the mother to develop maternal insulin resistance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
