This guy talks about some interesting studies that say that there's heavy correlation between self-identified rurality, poor health outcomes, political leanings, and antiintellectualism in the US. It also says self-identification of rurality does not always correlate to actual classifications of rurality, and that there's certain regions near cities that show very high rates of self-identified rurality that don't match the more academic definitions.

The guy's tone here is condescending as hell, but the information itself is fascinating, and and it's worth a listen!

This was Thanksgiving weekend. This year was good for me, but last Thanksgiving was shit because I thought I'd been invited to someone's thanksgiving, baked a pie, and then got ghosted. They had good reasons in the end, but it still fucking sucked, and although I'd always known that holidays are unfortunately a time where suicides spike, this is a heavy example of it.

I want to find out more about what happened, but I literally haven't talked with him in years. I'm out of touch with everyone I knew at the time.

I got an email just before I left work, today. It talked about the passing one of my mentors from back when I was an intern around 10 years ago, and had a couple of pdfs attached about suicide hotlines and recognizing suicidal tendencies in coworkers.

I haven't even talked with him in years, but the news has been weighing me down all evening. I keep trying to remember everything I can about him, kind of grieving even as I keep going through the evening. It brings to mind that steven universe comic of 'I miss rose. Guess I'll fold the laundry', because yeah. That's basically it.

The last email I sent him was a congratulations for some kind of award, and I never answered his reply. The last I heard was that he got promoted to try and rescue a project that was floundering badly before he ever entered the picture.
