This guy talks about some interesting studies that say that there's heavy correlation between self-identified rurality, poor health outcomes, political leanings, and antiintellectualism in the US. It also says self-identification of rurality does not always correlate to actual classifications of rurality, and that there's certain regions near cities that show very high rates of self-identified rurality that don't match the more academic definitions.

The guy's tone here is condescending as hell, but the information itself is fascinating, and and it's worth a listen!

This was Thanksgiving weekend. This year was good for me, but last Thanksgiving was shit because I thought I'd been invited to someone's thanksgiving, baked a pie, and then got ghosted. They had good reasons in the end, but it still fucking sucked, and although I'd always known that holidays are unfortunately a time where suicides spike, this is a heavy example of it.

I want to find out more about what happened, but I literally haven't talked with him in years. I'm out of touch with everyone I knew at the time.

I got an email just before I left work, today. It talked about the passing one of my mentors from back when I was an intern around 10 years ago, and had a couple of pdfs attached about suicide hotlines and recognizing suicidal tendencies in coworkers.

I haven't even talked with him in years, but the news has been weighing me down all evening. I keep trying to remember everything I can about him, kind of grieving even as I keep going through the evening. It brings to mind that steven universe comic of 'I miss rose. Guess I'll fold the laundry', because yeah. That's basically it.

The last email I sent him was a congratulations for some kind of award, and I never answered his reply. The last I heard was that he got promoted to try and rescue a project that was floundering badly before he ever entered the picture.

I will not hover over political news watching the elections tick closer. Hovering is the little-death that brings obliteration. I will face the elections and I will permit the flow of time to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see the results. Where the election stress has gone, there will be nothing.

I know we're all desperate for information and that the elections are looming over us like an impending avalanche, but we need to set aside how seriously we take polls.* There's been polling issues for months if not years that iirc can't just be explained by sampling bias or rounding errors, and even then things are so close that either result is within the margin of error.

For your own mental health, cast your vote and then ignore all polls until after the election. You'll skip the rollercoaster and get the exact same results, because watching the rollercoaster isn't actually going to have told you anything except stress.

*Yes, I'm aware of what GOP is doing with fluffing up their polls to give Trump grounds to claim the election was rigged. That's separate from actually listening to what the polls themselves say as an indicator of the voter's reality, because the news story exists BECAUSE those results are obviously biased.

I have... kind of a weird question: Should I make a proposal at work to expand our single stall bathroom to be a series of also gender neutral bathrooms, or should I make a proposal to have segregated bathrooms for men and women?

Context: I'm nonbinary, but while I dress androgynously I'm not explicitly out and probably just look butch. I use my assigned gender at birth bathroom in the big building at work because I'm deeply allergic to confrontation and also I don't expect the men's to actually be cleaner.

The specific lab this question is about is a building with only one bathroom that has a stall and a urinal. The building was built back in the days when only men were there, and since then it's just been a unisex (nongendered) bathroom. The problem from here is that the population of the building has expanded, and the men won't lock the door when they go in because it lets other men go into the unoccupied stall or urinal at will. It is uncomfortable for everyone when anyone else forgets to lock the door and someone walks in that shouldn't be able to.

I am currently the only trans person around, and if I were a trans person considering this group I would explain that although the young people are ok, the middle aged men are conservative enough that you get shouted down if you ask them to not crack 'make sure to keep your cat away from Hatians!' on the clock at you.

Should I flex this very small and weird amount of power to propose gender neutral bathrooms in the form of maybe two or three self-contained gender neutral bathrooms, or should I do what I was originally nudged towards and design two binary bathrooms as a proposal instead?
