Buck and Eddie are in love! Only, every time they manage to figure it out, they have a nasty habit of dying immediately after.

Chimney is about to have his hands full trying to keep them alive.

The silence is torture. Eddie is sitting across from Buck, who is practically stewing in his corner of this godforsaken elevator while they wait for their rescue. If not for the rubble blocking the open hatch in the ceiling, they'd have found a way out themselves, but as it stands, they're between a rock and a hard place. Literally. It's out of their hands. All they can do from the inside of this steel box is wait. In torturous silence. Because that’s what it’s been like between them for weeks now. Stilted moments. Averted eyes. Avoidance. Considering their current situation, trapped between floors as they are, Eddie would be impressed by Buck’s steadfast commitment to this whole thing if it weren’t so damn frustrating. They are practically on top of each other, for Christ’s sake, having to cram and angle themselves just so to avoid any risk of contact, god forbid.

Steve finds himself quickly charmed by the little thing, especially when it looks at him so intently with those brown eyes that seem weirdly familiar. Of course, in Hawkins, it would be weirder if there wasn't something extra-dimensional going on.

Below the cut, weird_witchcraft answered some questions about their writing process and some of their recommended work!

Why do you write Steddie? 

They hijacked my brain like they hijacked the Winnebago! I was a long time fanfic reader and never thought I’d write anything, but I just started getting ideas and ran with them. I’m honestly amazed that I’ve written so much and for three whole years now! They have such a fun dynamic and I have a great time exploring how they interact in different situations and universes. 

What’s your favorite trope to READ? 

I loooove the classics: fake dating, one bed, soulmates, vampires/werewolves, time travel/time loops. I can never pick one fave hahaha. 

What’s your favorite trope to WRITE?

Oh god I don’t know… I tend to write a lot of canon divergence and I love a modern au! 

What’s your favorite Steddie fic? 

Definitely “i come back to the place you are” by pizzabones (@glitterfang on tumblr) I love it so much, and I went from gushing about loving it to Becca to beta reading the last half of the fic, it’s the reason her and I became friends 🥲💕 I also adore Wabisabipapi’s “Boys of Summer” series, Ari (@arimakes on tumblr) is a master at creating rich alternate universes with detailed worldbuilding. I want to live in the lake town it’s such a special place. I could shout out a million other fics too, we have been blessed with so many gems in the Steddie community! 

Is there a trope you’re excited to explore in a future work but haven’t yet? 

I’m working on a werewolf Steve fic right now and I’ve always loved werewolf lore so I’m excited about that one! I’ve also thought about writing something with time travel too or soulmates because there are so many possibilities. 

What is your writing process like? 

A bit chaotic, honestly!! Most of the time i do bullet points to jot down ideas and then just run with it. With some of my more recent fics I’ve been plotting things out in more detail. I find this helps me not get lost along my way, especially since I’ve been struggling to write for the past year or so. It’s just not flowing out of me the same way that it used to!! Ari has taught me a lot and is so good at outlining and plotting. Their process is really awesome, and they talked about it in their spotlight. I can’t quite do it their way, but I’ve learnt from writing with them and beta reading their fics. I used to just write and see where it took me haha. I still do sometimes, I either get an idea for a scene or dialogue and expand from there. I also tend to have main things I want to have happen in a scene but I’m not always super concerned with how I get there. I need to be “in” the scene to figure out how I want the characters to talk or move or interact with one another. 

Do you have any writing quirks? 

I love—em dashes—and overuse them hahaha uhhh I wonder what else would be considered a quirk other than repeating the same word multiple times in a scene and Ari calling me out for it when they’re beta reading 😅 

Do you prefer posting when you’ve finished writing or on a schedule? 

I crave that dopamine hit of posting and seeing the kudos and comments come in, so I usually post right after something’s finished and beta read hahahaha  I really want to finish things first and post on a schedule, but I can never quite keep it up. I’m hoping that with the werewolf fic I can do just that. I wanted to do it with Acta Non Verba, my frat boy Steve fic, as I’d been working on it in the background for over a year and had three chapters finished and lots of scenes written but I got caught up to that and haven’t been able to write fast enough to update it regularly. 

Which fic are you most proud of? 

I’m proud of all of them in different ways! “We Part To Meet Again”, and “The Ritual” spring to mind first. “We Part To Meet Again” because it was something I wrote on a whim and then came back to a year later and had a lot of fun finishing. And “The Ritual” because I had so much fun writing Sapphic Steddie / a vampire fic.

How did you get the idea for Acta, Non Verba? 

It was a combination of a few things! Way back in December 2022 I was seeing people talking about Frat Boy Steve, along with photos of Joe Keery in a backwards hat, as well as seeing a viral tweet that said:  “I can’t stop thinking about the dude that made me cum 4 times in one sitting and called me a good girl every time and then completely ghosted me. I was ready to be a wife” I shared it with a friend saying that it was Steddie with Eddie leaving in the middle of the night thinking that king Steve just wanted a one night stand and Steve being like “where’d he go I am in love” Then I saw Savi’s ‘YUCK’ art which also inspired me to jot down some ideas!  I found myself continuously inspired by music as well and kept throwing songs on a playlist (which is now 17+ hours long) which gave me brainworms and finally lead to me writing the damn thing. I smushed everything together and kept it percolating for a couple of years while I worked on other things 😂

When writing Must Hate Mondays, what was something you didn’t expect? 

It’s probably the goofiest thing I have written! I had such fun crafting a story around all the Steddie Garfield art I could find.

What inspired Living In A Lunar Spell? 

Old school “character turned into creature/animal” fics! I read a few back in the day and I thought it would be fun to put my own spin on it with Eddie turning into a fuzzy little vampire bat.  Shout out to @stevieschrodinger’s Chiroptera series, where Eddie turns into a demobat, there’s so many funny moments in that one.

What was your favorite part to write from Night Drives?

There’s so many great moments in the series that I had fun writing, I loved collaborating with Becca on some art for it as well. I just really love inserting Eddie into the earlier canon events, so writing him coming into Scoops and flirting with Steve is a ton of fun. 

How did you feel writing You’re The Ultimate? 

I had so much fun playing with the bodyswap trope. I wrote that in pretty early days, before I had many fandom friends. I kept dragging my friend Melissa ( @justcourbeau on tumblr) along, trying to tempt her with the Steddie hyperfixation. Talking with her gave me the idea to write a bodyswap and I loved being able to bounce ideas with her throughout. 

What was the most difficult part of writing Strawberries & Cigarettes?

The end for sure!! It was the first fic I’d ever written and I had no clue what I was doing, nothing planned other than a couple plot points. I also started writing other things after I began it so circling back and finishing it was hard but so worth it! It’s certainly not my best fic but there’s lots of fun things in it and I’m glad I took a leap and started writing. 

Do you have a favorite scene and/or line from any of your fics? 

This bit from “Power to Charm” - Part 9 of Night Drives is the first thing that sprung to mind: Eddie throws himself on the floor, crying out, “He’s done it! He’s dealt a killing blow! Here lies Edward Munson, viciously murdered by his own flesh and blood!” Wayne chuckles, trying to cover it with a cough as he pokes Eddie’s with his foot, “Do me a favor and wriggle around s’more while you’re down there, floor needs cleanin’.” Amazingly, I think some of the funnest moments I’ve written are Wayne & Eddie scenes or maybe Stobin scenes. I love Steddie but I also love exploring their relationships with other people. 

Do you have any upcoming projects or fics you’d like to share/promote? 

By the time this gets shared I hope I’ll have “Acta, Non Verba” complete and be posting my Werewolf Steve fic, “Back To The Meaning”, but who knows! I appreciate anyone taking the time to read any of my fics 🥰
