Louis Tomlinson (UK) sold 160,000 tickets worldwide for his ‘Live from London’ charity concert, which was livestreamed on Veeps from an unknown venue in the UK’s capital city on 12 December 2020. The event raised more than $1 million (£755,000) for four charities – Crew Nation, FareShare, Stagehand and the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice (based in Sheffield, UK) – with Tomlinson’s own touring crew also receiving a portion of the proceeds after being out of work since March 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tomlinson’s 18-song set featured tracks from his debut solo album Walls (2020), three One Direction covers and the live debut of “Copy of a Copy of a Copy”.‘
Live from London’ was the third-biggest livestreamed concert of 2020 in terms of ticket sales, after BTS (756,000) and Dua Lipa (284,000), as the music industry moved away from traditional gigs with fans in attendance in light of restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Veeps, co-founded by Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden in 2017, had been a leading player in the shift towards bringing music into fans’ homes in 2020, billing itself as “the livestream concert platform for the music industry”. In January 2021, events promoter Live Nation bought a majority stake in Veeps in a bid to offset a dramatic decline in revenue caused by the cessation of live concerts and touring. In 2020, Veeps reportedly made more than $10 million in sales for the decimated touring sector.‘
Live from London setlist: “Just Hold On”; “We Made It”; “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart”; “Drag Me Down”; “Two of Us”; “Habit”; “Too Young”; “Perfect Now”; “Through the Dark”; “Fearless”; “Copy of a Copy of a Copy”; “Defenceless”; “Beautiful War”; “Always You”; “Little Black Dress”; “Walls”; “Only the Brave”; “Kill My Mind”.

Today I am obsessed with louis defenseless. I was analyzing the text and would like to know your opinion. Who is the recipient of the message? it speaks of wanting to be loved, of feeling helpless. I love this song and its writing skills.
Hello!
Credits to @copyrovers on Twitter for these excellent graphics - never a bad day to share them! From Project Defenceless:

As for the interpretation of Defenceless, I think we can conclude that chronologically, the events of this song predates Walls (the song). In Defenceless, they’re clearly having some issues (“sleeping on our problems”), but they are still negotiating (“you tell me take it easy”). In Walls, Louis’ partner has walked out and left him with “a closet full of clothes.”
In the tracklist, Defenceless is the second to last song, and is immediately followed by Only the Brave. Defenceless seems like a last-ditch effort to repair the relationship before it was done for good. It is an intimate, intense relationship. We can tell from the image in the very first line, “I come running to you like a moth into a flame.” The image is indelible, visceral - a self-destructive, involuntary impulse to plead for reconciliation, only to be brushed aside. “You tell me take it easy” despite Louis’ anxiety, worry, self-criticism, “Wish I didn’t need so much of you.”
I think we all know that the image chosen for the Spotify cover art of Defenceless was a Larrie drawing of Harry’s moth tattoo, and maybe the lyrics imply this too.
I wrote when Walls first came out that there seem to be many Easter eggs in the lyrics.
Been up all night: refers to the 1D album, UAN
All night runnin’ all my lines (refers to band rehearsals)
you don’t have to keep on being strong for me and you: 1D song that Louis wrote on (Strong)
And I can't get inside when you're lost in your pride: an LGBT reference
(Detour for a minute to lyrics from Ready to Run, which Louis helped to write, “But I know, yes I know we'll be alright.” Compare to Harry’s Fine Line, a reassurance after a hard breakup, “We’ll be alright.”)
So Defenceless represents a last pleading, laying it all out on the table, when arguments sound tired and there are no more words to say (“wake up early morning and they’re still under the sheets”).
What Louis lays out is in the bridge, with a melody high in his tessatura and soaring into an ecstatic falsetto— “I’m too tired to be tough, just wanna be loved by you.” “You” is the highest note, because “you” are the most intoxicating subject of the song, the highest point. And it’s actually the hardest part for him to sing, so it is also where Louis is most vulnerable technically (like solo SONG in OTB).
In the AFHF, Louis let the audience sing the bridge. I don’t know if it meant anything, really, but he wasn’t singing the most vulnerable part— the audience was asking Louis for his hand in marriage love instead— a role reversal like the “you were my because” line in Walls. It is a healing moment. Somehow Louis worked his trauma out in music, and the audience was telling him, we get it, we love you.
