‘To sum up the whole thing’, Paul chooses a song called Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) by some guy called John Lennon, and makes the biggest mistake of his professional career
Danger: Proceed with Caution ⚠️

to me, one of the most essential pieces of J+P lore is 18-year-old paul, fresh out of hamburg, loitering in the space between the beatles and a Real Job, thisclose to walking away from the band, and finally it wasn’t even music that kept him. it was john.
(“and in the end he chose me” has been looping in my brain all day so let me just indulge myself for a second here)
it’s just so…..….…..idk. like, okay, john loved music, but it was never the whole thing for him. it was a means of purging something big and messy that he was desperate to express, but that outlet might’ve taken any other form. in spite of his immense talent, john could (did) walk away from music, and there were certainly times he seemed to resent it.
for paul, it really seems as though music is the whole point. it’s his trade and his language and his internal navigation system. he writes songs like other (normal) people breathe— compulsively, almost involuntarily. since he got started (70!? years ago) he’s never stopped cranking them out, and I don’t think he could stop if he wanted to.
even so, it was john who pulled paul into Everything with his ultimatum. john was the literal prerequisite for paul’s commitment to something that grows from the very core of him. like, paul finds music in his dreams and brings it out into the waking world, and still he wouldn’t devote himself to it. but he could choose john.
and then look what they did! they articulated things with and for each other that neither would’ve done alone. john pulled something out of paul’s soul, and that thing served as a vessel to hold the chaos that came pouring out of john. and then they changed the world with it.
I just keep coming back to the idea that music was inevitable for paul. but this life, this version of it, only happened because john was standing at the door and saying, “come on then.” and so paul went.
paul mccartney is Paul McCartney because of music, and music is entangled, forever, with John Lennon. how DO you lead a normal life, after that?

Why Paul's song "Fuh You" might be about John
The music video was filmed in Liverpool (interesting). We see the boy in the video kissing his girlfriend goodbye outside her house at 62 Inwood Road (Inwood Road is where lived the family for which young Paul McCartney worked for as a paper boy). Number 62 backs on to the parade of shops on Woolton Road facing the cenotaph. The boy leaves and is seen walking along Long Lane towards some shops, and pauses briefly to nick a chip off two girls standing outside (remember that Paul once said this about John: ‘I saw him in the queue at a chip shop once'"'. This was when he was talking about having seen John before the fete. He also said he often saw him in the bus).
Tumblr media
We know that the church fete was not where Paul met John for the first time. Mark Lewisohn said that, “in private company”, Paul had admitted that he exchanged words with John outside a newsagent’s shop when doing a paper round some time before the fete. A local family who spoke to Lewisohn and remembered Paul as a boy, called the newsagent shop’s name “Abbas”.
There is a line in the song that says ‘On the night that I met you’ and it’s interesting that at that very moment in the video, the boy is outside 85 Woolton Road, the former premises of the newsagent's shop W.W. Abba, where Paul worked as a paper boy.
Tumblr media
(the white door on the left is where W.W. Abba was)
So, we have Paul saying he met John while working as a paper boy, and then we see in the video that, as the lyrics “on the night i met you” are said, the boy is walking pass the newsagent’ shop where Paul worked. Coincidence?
Also interesting is that the fact that Paul’s first name is James and the boy in the video is named ‘Jamie’.
All this blew my mind, and made me think that there must be nods to John in the lyrics of the song. And indeed, there are many possible hints, like the following lines:
“Come on baby now, help me work it out. I won't let you down so you don't need to shout”
These are apparent nods to Help!, We Can Work It Our, Don’t Let Me Down, and Twist and Shout. I think these lines are clearly intentional. There is also another line “And everyday, in every way”, which may be a reference to John’s song Beautiful Boy (which Paul loves).
What do you guys think? Is this all a coincidence?

"It’s sad because you know, John and George aren’t here. But it’s exciting for me to go back in time and just… because I took the pictures it’s like I’m there. I know it’s a slightly obvious thing to say but it just reminds me of John with his shades and his guitar.” He looks cool there, I offer. “He was,” Paul McCartney replies, voice trailing off, already back in time. “He was a very cool boy.”

And the Dream I Had Was You
Relationships: John Lennon/Paul McCartney
Summary:
1962. The day before John’s wedding, Paul came by without asking.
Paul had the kind of mouth you noticed always—small, lovely, like a gouache painting, a porcelain doll, a pretty girl in a glossy magazine—but especially when he laughed. God, how could Paul laugh, as if John wasn’t marrying someone else tomorrow? There was something performative in it. John felt as though a curtain might fall at any moment to reveal that they weren’t really in his home but on stage, while the girls in the audience held up homemade cardstock posters. Big block letters, I LOVE PAUL. Well, he wanted to tell them, what good does that do you? And still, John wanted him something awful. He watched Paul’s tongue flick out to wet his lips and wished he could press a finger deep inside.

what does it say about a man when his sense of self is so entangled with another that even his self portrait becomes a fusion of their faces. if i were in paul's place i don’t think i could go on. it’s devastating. grief is such a terrible thing.
it's like, the desperate need for your identities to merge, for your names to become indistinguishable, for the boundary between two people to dissolve until there is no separate existence, only a single, shared one suspended forever.

This fic is now complete on AO3
Being John Lennon
Tumblr media
John attempts to parent Sean, overcome his long-standing creative blocks, and battle the insecurities and paranoia that continually plague him. Meanwhile, with the help of her interior designer, several puppeteers, and Elton John, Yoko is organising her latest performance art show, which will take place in the Dakota without John's consent.
Then John finds out Linda is pregnant.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/65130220/chapters/167507788
A first-person John fic set in the Dakota exploring John’s mental health difficulties, particularly his experience of hearing voices, PTSD and psychosis* and the impact his mental health has on his close relationships. *(Obviously I have no idea what, if any, diagnoses the real John had, but these are the difficulties my blorbo has to contend with, poor thing).
Part 3 of the 70s McLennon series Tug of War. Although it’s a McLennon series overall, this fic concentrates more on his day-to-day in-person relationships, particularly his marriage with Yoko, although of course Paul will always be lurking in the corner of any John POV.
This completed fic will have 7 parts and be released weekly on Sundays.
Thank you to my dear real-life friend Rogue Sunshine for making the beautiful cover art reflect John’s state of mind. Sorry I keep boring you with my special interest!
