I know I've been slacking with the Training Camps. I'm sorry but I have another dilemma.
I've contemplated scrapping the Togachako dynamic. I don't 100% hate it, but I feel like it's part of what kept Uraraka in the background love interest role. The fact that they bonded over Izuku felt really surface level, even if some of their later scenes are actually fairly well done.
I've briefly talked on my main about how Monoma is actually a lot more similar to Toga. Them being treated differently for their quirks, them attaching themselves to the people who accepted them (the LOV for Toga and 1B for Monoma). They're also obsessive (Monoma is a little more low-key about it). I feel like that's a dynamic that could really be explored.
(This would also make Monoma a central character)
It's also been mentioned (not by me but others) how Uraraka's villain could've been Twice because of their similarities living poor. There's a real chance for exploration here.
But that's all even if I decide to keep the heroes and their villains thing. Because to me, it kind of presents the LOV as obstacles that need to be overcome and even dehumanizes them to some degree. I don't completely hate it, but it definitely wasn't my favorite part in the Final War.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I made a post about it on my main:
Honestly, I do love canon Eri. But I do think this could not only give her more depth, but give me the chance to kind of fix some of Mirio's narrative flaws as well. I'd probably change some things from the original post (it was really just me mapping out an idea at the time), but vote on it

I've kind of hit a snag here. Because Bakugou didn't place at the Sports Festival, his tantrum never happened. So the LOV obviously isn't going after him here.
Which begs the question, who would they target? If it's Izuku, it opens up the potential for more interaction between him and Shigaraki which is something canon dropped the ball on. However, Shigaraki wants him dead at this point so I don't want to put Izuku in a situation where he's vulnerable (broken arms) and in danger. I also don't think Shigaraki is smart enough to see past his hatred yet.
They could target Tokoyami because of his quirk. But in canon Tokoyami doesn't get a lot of stigma for it. I could write him being scouted because he's powerful, but for the direction I'm going with for the LOV, I feel like they wouldn't just want a powerful quirk.
Uraraka I think could be pretty viable here. She has most people's attention among the first years at the moment. Even though she didn't win, she beat someone who everyone had their eyes on and made it to the second to last round. Right now, she's the standout among the first years. I think the LOV could take an interest in her if only for the publicity.
The only reason I'm recommending Momo is also the same reason the LOV wouldn't take an interest in her. She was brushed aside and ignored. It could resonate with some of them, but it could also be a reason for them to discard her. It's a tossup.
So, tell me what you guys think

Final Exams Arc
Okay, let's get into this.
Izuku Midoriya & Katsuki Bakugou vs All Might:
I know, I know. Just hear me out, okay?
I was absolutely going to change this matchup (@nutzgunray-lvt had brought up Momo and Izuku vs Midnight and I really loved that idea). But I did say before that some of Aizawa's worst tendencies would still be around. He thinks Izuku and Bakugou's relationship is because of both of them not being able to cooperate. This is the opportunity to teach him a well-deserved lesson.
So, I would say most things go the same. Bakugou is being a bitch uncooperative and making things harder. But once Bakugou punches him, Izuku starts to contemplate a lot.
Logically, he knows that while All Might is focused on Bakugou, he could escape. Bakugou wouldn't let All Might ignore him and he could use the cover of the smoke from the debris and Bakugou's gauntlets.
But it feels so... unheroic. He isn't supposed to run and leave his teammate behind. A true hero would stand and fight, even while facing certain death. He's not sure he could abandon his ally, it feels cowardly. Especially because Bakugou could be seriously hurt as All Might wasn't going easy on them.
Part of him argues that Bakugou wouldn't care if he was the one being beat to a pulp.
Ironically, it's Yaoyorozu who comes to mind. Izuku knows the two of them are very different, but he really does admire her rationality and planning. She would make the argument that coming back with reinforcements isn't leaving a teammate behind, it's presenting an opportunity to save them.
Izuku doesn't think he would actually be able to do this in a real situation. He wants to save people, he wants to make people smile. Has he ever made Bakugou smile?
But this isn't a real situation, is it? Maybe just this once, he didn't have to intervene.
Izuku turns around and runs for the exit, successfully escaping while Bakugou is fighting All Might alone like an idiot.
He tries to ignore the guilt he feels at what he's done and wonders if All Might is disappointed in him.
Momo Yaoyorozu & Shoto Todoroki vs Eraserhead
Honestly, as far as this fight goes, it's one of my favorites of this arc. I feel like the characterization for both of them is pretty good. They both play off one another really well.
However, the way I've had it set up, Yaoyorozu had been learning to think on her feet. So, obviously, I have to continue with that.
Unintentionally, Todoroki tries to brush Yaoyorozu aside because he thinks he can handle it without causing her harm. He admires her intelligence and proficiency with her quirk, but thinks that he could probably mange to apprehend Aizawa on his own.
Yaoyorozu vehemently protests. She acknowledges that she has hesitated before, but that this was different than the Sports Festival. She knows that she can do better if he gives her the chance.
Todoroki is taken back by this and doesn't notice Aizawa suspended from the rafters. But Yaoyorozu does out of the corner of her eye. She moves him out of the way and creates a pipe that Aizawa's capture scarf wraps around.
She can't hesitate here, she needs to act quickly. She releases the pipe and the force drives it towards Aizawa. He dodges it easily, but he was momentarily distracted which gave Yaoyorozu and Todoroki time to hide and regroup.
Once they're out of his sight, Todoroki apologizes. He tells her that he wasn't trying to make her feel inadequate, he just wasn't used to relying on others. He tells her that he thinks that she's very capable and has a high opinion of her, which was why he voted for her for class representative. He tells her he'd ready to listen to whatever plan she has.
Yaoyorozu is genuinely touched and accepts his apology. She admits that she understands how it's hard to connect and work with others and has trouble with coming off as unfriendly and unapproachable and tends to overthink too much. She actually talks about Izuku and Uraraka and how she's somewhat jealous of them because they're able to act without thinking.
So the two of them make a plan.
Yaoyorozu "ambushes" Aizawa with a smoke bomb. This doesn't work because his goggles allow him to see heat signatures (my own addition, I feel like it makes sense). She attacks him with a staff she made. She knows that she's outclassed, but manages to defend against his blows. She isn't thinking, she's fighting on instinct and she's actually managing to hold her own.
But Aizawa is more skilled and experienced. He knocks her down and captures her with his scarf. But suddenly he can't move. He looks down and sees that his feet are frozen to the ground. He turns around to attempt to find Todoroki and negate his quirk when a handcuff is clasped around his wrist.
It had been a diversion.
Yaoyorozu managed to free herself by cutting through his scarf with a dagger and cuffed him when he was focused on finding Todoroki.
(Yaoyorozu leans balance between planning and taking action while Todoroki learns how to rely on others and seem them as equals. Yay character development)
Ochako Uraraka & Yuga Aoyama vs Thirteen:
I'm keeping this mostly the same, but without Aoyama's teasing. But instead of Uraraka being embarrassed and letting go, she asks Aoyama to use his laser to momentarily blind Thirteen the minute she lets go. He does so, and Uraraka allows herself to be sucked in and propelled at Thirteen, where she takes them (referring to Thirteen neutrally because her gender hasn't been revealed at this point) down and cuffs them while they can't see.
I think I'll be keeping every other match the same. EXCEPT for Mineta and Sero versus Midnight, Sero doesn't take the fall for Mineta and Mineta falls victim to his own weakness. It's Sero who saves him and carries him to the exit.
(I changed this because I'm going to give Mineta a little bit of growth and reflection. Having him lose here means that his perversion isn't only gross, it's hindering his work as a hero and he needs to do better)
After the exam, Aizawa commends Izuku (in private) for thinking logically for once, but questions why he would leave his teammate behind because it seems unlike him. Izuku confesses that he tried to plan and work with Bakugou, but he simply wasn't listening. He figured he could save both their grades if he successfully escaped.
He feels guilty even as he says this. How can he call himself a hero if he left his teammate to suffer at the hands of a villain?
Even if it was Bakugou.
Aizawa thinks about what he's being told for a long time. He knows that Bakugou has been violent with Izuku. He had assumed that they were rivals who couldn't get along, which was why he had paired them together. He had noticed that All Might looked like he wanted to protest this arrangement, but hadn't.
All this time, he had thought Izuku was part of the problem. But there was a bruise on the kid's cheek even though he hadn't sustained any injuries from All Might. It didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened.
And suddenly he feels guilty for not nipping this in the bud sooner.
Aizawa tells Izuku not to worry about it and that he had done the right thing. Then, he goes to confront All Might. He asks All Might what the real nature of Izuku and Bakugou's relationship is. All Might doesn't want to tell Aizawa for three reasons: a) it was Izuku's business not his, b) he didn't want Aizawa to accuse him of favoritism again and give Izuku and even harder time, and c) he didn't have the full truth himself, just speculation.
(I initially wrote this to be an argument, but I feel like All Might probably wouldn't argue with Aizawa. Plus, he feels guilty about not addressing this sooner)
Aizawa feels like an asshole (he is), but decides that he's going to try to do better by Izuku and all of his students.
RESULTS:
Yuga Aoyama: PASS
Mina Ashido: FAIL
Tsuyu Asui: PASS
Tenya Iida: PASS
Ochako Uraraka: PASS
Mashirao Ojiro: PASS
Denki Kaminari: FAIL
Eijiro Kirishima: FAIL
Koji Koda: PASS
Rikido Sato: FAIL
Mezo Shoji: PASS
Kyoka Jirou: PASS
Hanta Sero: PASS
Fumikage Tokoyami: PASS
Shoto Todoroki: PASS
Toru Hagakure: PASS
Katsuki Bakugou: FAIL
Izuku Midoriya: PASS
Minrou Mineta: FAIL
Momo Yaoyorozu: PASS
Bakugou is pissed when the results are announced. He rages, demanding to know why worthless Deku passed and he didn't. Izuku is also shocked (and guilty, because he had assumed escaping would secure both their grades. He wouldn't have done it if he had known Kacchan would fail too!). But Aizawa silences Bakugou with a nasty glare.
He reprimands Bakugou, telling him he had warned him about acting irresponsibly. Not only had he refused to cooperate and put himself in unnecessary danger, but he had assaulted his teammate. Aizawa bluntly tells him that a strong quirk isn't everything and that he can't act however he wants and still get his way in life. Reality would force him to face more severe consequences unless he gets his act together.
(Despite this, Izuku still feels like he should have failed too. He had abandoned his teammate, wasn't that the opposite of being heroic?)
Aizawa announces that everyone will be going to the training camps (there was no logical ruse because that shit is dumb and canon Aizawa doesn't know any other ways to teach).
While gathering allies to form the League of Villains, Tomura is introduced to two candidates: Himiko Toga and someone who introduces himself as Dabi. They both sought the League out because of Stain.
(Also, I just confirmed that Dabi did not have a notable record prior to joining the LOV. Keep that in mind)
This pisses Tomura off. He hates Stain for turning him down and doesn't understand his ideals. Society was wrong and heroes were two-faced liars who perpetuated it. Why not wipe out everything? Why not destroy it all? He expresses this to the new candidates.
Dabi rolls his eyes and calls Tomura an idiot without a real cause. He doesn't care about what or who gets destroyed, but he admires Stain because he spoke out against false heroes. He claims that false heroes are the real blunder on society and if they can be purged, humanity might get their shit together.
Toga doesn't talk about false heroes, but she does want a world where everyone can be accepted no matter what he quirk is. She wants to be herself and have people to accept and care about her. She felt a kinship with Stain because of the similarities in their quirks and thought that the League would accept her because of this.
Tomura is frustrated because he doesn't understand what the hell these people are talking about. He tries to kill them and they go to defend themselves only for Kurogiri to intervene. He tells Tomura that he needs all the forces he can get and that maybe he should actually listen to what these two have to say.
Grumbling, he goes to the mall to clear his head.
This happens to be when 1A also goes to the mall to prepare for the training camps. Izuku, Iida, Uraraka, Tsu, and Yaoyorozu form a small group as they look for things to buy. Yaoyorozu's made an itinerary and hands everyone a list of basic necessities. The girls break off from the boys, wanting to see if they can find more comfortable clothes to wear.
Iida expresses his gratitude to Izuku, not for saving him, but for showing him what it means to be a hero. Izuku blushes and stutters, telling Iida he really doesn't need to thank him. Especially because he doesn't think he did the right thing during the final exam. He confesses what happened to Iida and that he feels like he betrayed his morals.
But Iida assures him that he didn't do anything wrong. Bakugou was risking both their grades and was never in any actual danger. Izuku says that even so he should have tried harder. Iida's quiet for a moment, then asks Izuku how he feels about Bakugou.
Izuku is confused by the question. He admires Bakugou's strength and dedication. What more is there? Why is Iida asking him this?
But before he can say that, a hooded figure shows up and starts touching Izuku (stranger danger) while expressing how much of a fan he was. He goes on and on about how he was so cool during the Sports Festival and facing Stain (chronic yapper). Both Izuku and Tenya are tense, especially when the stranger reveals that he didn't think they would meet again.
They both realize at the same time that the man is Tomura Shigaraki, the one who led the attack on the USJ.
Iida immediately moves to do... something (attack? Call for help? He doesn't know!) only to watch with horror as Shigaraki's fingers close around Izuku's neck, leaving his middle finger off him.
Shigaraki tells both of them to calm down unless they want Izuku to die. But Izuku assures Iida that it doesn't matter if he dies, he just wants him to stop Shigaraki. If he makes a scene, the heroes will show up. However, Shigaraki tells them that he'll kill everyone he can before the heroes get there if either of them draw any attention. Iida wasn't planning on risking it anyway.
Shigaraki tells them that the Hero Killer is bugging him. Both of them are confused; they assumed that Stain was working with him. Shigaraki tells them that wasn't the case and that he's jealous of all the attention Stain is getting. He doesn't understand the difference between them.
Iida asks what Shigaraki's goal is. He hates Stain, but he knows that Stain had a goal. One that might not have been as baseless as he originally thought. His brother, who he had thought was a virtuous, noble hero had done something wrong. If he was right about Tensei, wasn't it possible that he was right about all of them?
Shigaraki answers that he wants to destroy everything.
Izuku says that's why he isn't getting any attention. He had been thinking a lot about Todoroki and what he had told him about Endeavor. If the #2 hero was that bad, what were other heroes getting away with? How much did society overlook about someone just because they were strong? It's hard for him to admit through his admiration for heroes, but he thinks Stain made some sort of sense. He tells Shigaraki that Stain had a goal and a reason for doing things, while Shigaraki causes destruction for no reason. Izuku doesn't agree with what Stain does, but his ideals make some sort of sense.
Izuku tells Shigaraki that he suspects that Stain wants to fix things about society and that correlates to killing false heroes. He doesn't understand how quite yet, but he assumes him and All Might were spared because they put others first. They were "true heroes," according to Stain.
(He really doesn't feel like a true hero after what happened in the final exam. He feels like a fake)
Shigaraki thinks about his answer. He thinks about what Toga and Dabi said. He knew society was wrong, Sensei had always told him that. But he had always said the answer was destroying it and Tomura had always agreed.
But fixing it? He doesn't understand the point of that. Tomura had never fixed anything in his life. He had always just destroyed and killed whatever irked him, whatever made him angry. And Sensei had encouraged it. He's a villain and he had never denied that. He doesn't want to fix anything.
He just wants to destroy it.
Didn't he?
But Stain's goals seemed to get attention. He could use that to his advantage. Then everyone would have to pay attention to him. He could make Stain's followers his own. Starting with those two fools who followed him so devoutly.
The girls return. Uraraka and Yaoyorozu ask who their friend is, but Tsu instantly realizes who it is. She had been a second away from dying at his hand. She could never forget that face. She freezes, which makes the other two girls realize something is wrong. They demand that Shigaraki let go of Izuku.
Shigaraki chuckles and does as they say. He thanks Izuku and Iida for the help and leaves, warning them not to follow. Izuku asks what All For One is after, to which Shigaraki replies he has no idea. He then tells Izuku to worry about himself because he'll kill him next time they meet.
Once he's gone, Uraraka frantically asks what happened and if they're alright while Yaoyorozu tends to Tsu who's gone pale. Uraraka calls the police while Iida tries to shake Izuku who's unresponsive.
He can't bring himself to respond to his friends. All he can think about is how he was going to stop Shigaraki and All For One before they can hurt more people
Notes:
Aizawa redemption anyone?? He's going to be a better teacher from here on out. Still an asshole, but his goal is going to be actively working to improve his students. Letting Bakugou's behavior go unchecked to where he felt comfortable attacking his teammate was the wake-up call he needed
I intentionally didn't have All Might talk to Izuku. He's still grappling with his own views about heroics at the moment and he suspects that Bakugou is a bully, so it doesn't occur to him that Izuku might thing he was disappointed in him. They're both really bad communicators
It was a weird choice on Horikoshi's part to make Sero pay for Mineta's shortcomings. He could have used this to address Mineta's actions, instead he more or less rewards it. Feels like something he does a lot with Mineta (he also did it during the JTA), which is part of the reason why he's so hated
I swear Uraraka is so much more enjoyable as a character when you take away her crush on Izuku. Rewriting this damn story is reigniting my love for her
So, Shigaraki. What I'm doing here is trying to a) give him agency and b) have him overcome AFO's manipulations. Shigaraki's hatred of heroes and society comes from AFO taking advantage of what happened that night he killed his family. These aren't Shigaraki's real feelings, he doesn't have enough agency to have real feelings at this point. My changes here were to a) give him a real goal and b) show that he and Izuku are kind of coming to terms with the same thing. That's also why I steered away from him wanting to kill All Might, I want their interaction to be driven away from their mentors. They're kind of coming to the same conclusions, but on opposite spectrums
I kept Iida around because I wanted him to also reflect on Stain and Tensei. Also, he's a good friend
I know it might feel OOC to have Izuku leave Bakugou. I felt weird writing it. But this is supposed to be representative of a few things. Izuku's views are changing and evolving. He's being affected by the people around him, most noticeably Momo who's kind of his opposite here. He knew he wasn't ready to fight All Might and knew it was pointless to get Bakugou to cooperate. He was thinking objectively and allowed himself to do so because it was a school assignment and not real life (he wouldn't be able to do this in a real situation). It also isn't a coincidence that this happened after Bakugou punched him. He's coming to terms with how much Bakugou's treatment has affected him over the years. After all that's happened- his friends' and All Might's concerns- Izuku is beginning to separate himself from Bakugou, even if he hasn't realized it yet. This is actually what Iida was going to suggest was happening before Shigaraki showed up
Dabi is way closer to being morally ambiguous than an outright villain here. I mean, in my opinion, that's how he was originally. Him and Toga are both following Stain's ideals more closely, although Toga doesn't really understand them to the same extent (I noticed that Shigaraki seemed to assume that Toga didn't actually care about Stain's goals despite admiring him but didn't include Dabi in that. It implies that his goals always aligned more closely with what Stain wanted. Horikoshi why did you ruin him)

Hero Killer Stain Arc
As far as arcs in MHA go, this is the only one I would call almost perfect.
This was the arc that (should have) set the tone for the rest of the series. It was dark enough to show us the severity of being a hero, laid out the flaws of hero society, and tells us why Izuku (our main character) is different and has the power to change things.
I hesitate to change much about it.
I think there's something to be said about Izuku's reaction to Stain. As far as people who call out society, Stain is the only one who gets through Izuku's ideals if only a little bit. No one else- not even Lady Nagant, who had the most valid argument- made him stop and think.
I do have to wonder if this was because of Stain's admiration for All Might. And that... isn't a great look for Izuku in all honesty.
So instead, I want Stain's words to really affect Izuku. I want him- as someone who's studied heroes all his life- to really think on the things he's seen. Thing he might have justified in his head at the time. I want him to reflect on what Todoroki told him about Endeavor and Quirk Marriages. I want his idealization of heroes and the societies heroes protect to be challenged.
This will be the start in deconstructing not only Izuku's blind hero worship, but also the circumstances in which he grew up in. What allowed Bakugou to torment him all those years? What was it that decided that he wasn't equal to his peers?
I mentioned this before on my main, but the one thing I always thought would benefit the Stain arc was also breaking Tenya's idolization of Tensei.
Stain brings up great points in canon, but they're undercut by the fact that Tensei- as far as we know- is a good hero. So Stain targeting him really undermines his actions and goals. Sure, you can make the argument that it's all heroes other than All Might that he sees as the problem, but it just makes Stain look like a hypocrite because we have no proof of that either.
So, Tensei won't be as innocent here.
It happened when he was just starting out as a hero. Tensei Iida had just graduated from UA and became the hero Ingenium. He was dedicated to upholding his family's ideals: noble, honest, and good.
But as a rookie, he came across something he wasn't supposed to see. He was investigating an underground drug ring where he witnessed Lady Nagant- one of the top 10 heroes at the time- kill another hero, albeit one a lot less known.
Tensei panicked and demanded to know what she was doing. But her eyes were so haunted and empty that he couldn't bring himself to move. When she answered him, her voice was hollow. She told him that this was the society they were tasked with upholding as heroes. And that if he had a problem with it, he could take it up with the HPSC. And then she left, like nothing had happened.
She was arrested just a few months later.
Tensei never said a word about it. And the guilt has been haunting him ever since.
He confesses all of this to Tenya after Tenya's confrontation with Stain. Tenya is confused and upset; all his life he has been taught that standing up for what's right is the foundation of the Iida family. He doesn't know how to feel about this information...
But then he remembers how Izuku had rushed in to help him without hesitation. How he always stood up for others, no matter what. How he never gave up.
Izuku... inspired him. Izuku made him want to be a better hero. A hero who always did the right thing, regardless of if it followed all the rules or not.
Shoto has never had friends before. He was never allowed to. He was told he was better than everyone else, including his brothers and sister. But being there for Izuku and Tenya felt... good. Like others relied on him, and he could rely on them too.
He's been sheltered all his life so outside of Endeavor he doesn't really understand what Stain is talking about. Heroes are usually good, like All Might, right?
But what if... more of them were like his father than he had previously believed?
Meanwhile, Yaoyorozu- upon learning that Uraraka is interning with Gunhead- decides to take the invitation from him that was also offered to her. She wants to know how Uraraka held off so well against Tokoyami when she couldn't. Uraraka thrives under Gunhead's tutelage, but Yaoyorozu struggles. She, no matter how hard she tries, can't seem to learn how to think on her feet.
Yaoyorozu comes off as cold at first which intimidates Uraraka, but then she realizes "Oh, this rich kid has never had a normal social interaction in her life." She makes the effort to be kind to Yaoyorozu, who has never had a real friend in her life and doesn't know how to respond to this compassion.
Uraraka helps her to stop overthinking. Tells her to stop thinking about what her opponent will do so much and look at what they're actually doing. It improves Yaoyorozu's already decent combat ability, which she's grateful for. She sincerely thanks Uraraka and confides in how she felt like she failed at the Sports Festival. Uraraka sympathizes; it's hard to be overlooked and cast aside when you know you're capable of doing so much more. For the first time in her life, Yaoyorozu feels understood
(They're besties, your honor)
Notes:
This one's more of a summary because there really aren't many changes to this arc other than Tensei's flashback. I was thinking of making him an HPSC assassin too, but a) I thought it would be more meaningful if he just happened to be in a place where he made the wrong choice and b) I like to think that the Iida family is descended from some of the first heroes. I feel like the HPSC couldn't sink their claws in them
The "main trio" as of the moment will be Izuku, Tenya, and Shoto as was (presumably) intended. I loved their chemistry in this arc and I feel like the three of them balance each other out really well
I almost forgot to take Momo out of that terrible internship. Having her work with Gunhead along with Uraraka was a great opportunity for Momo to actually connect with another girl. I feel like Horikoshi had all the girls like each other and get along for no other reason than they're all girls. Even MomoJirou and TsuChako are like that to an extent
To add to that, I also felt like Horikoshi focused way too much on Momo becoming an even better planner instead of being able to think on her feet. Her and Izuku are kind of opposites that way and it would have made for some great parallels between them
Do you guys think Best Jeanist would still take an interest in Bakugou? He lost pretty early and didn't have the chance to throw his tantrum at the awards ceremony. He definitely wouldn't get nearly as many offers in canon. I feel like him being mentored by Jeanist or not is an indication of whether or not he'll be redeemed idk it just feels that way

UA Sports Festival Arc
I've been waiting to get my hands on this arc (this is a long one so be prepared).
Despite the USJ incident, the Sports Festival is still going on. However, Aizawa, Midnight, and Present Mic vehemently protest against broadcasting it nationally. They remind Nezu that the school is very clearly being targeted and that exposing the weaknesses of their students- especially their first years- is not a good idea. Nezu acknowledges their concerns and agrees, but tells them that the HPSC has demanded that the Sports Festival goes on as planned. That the country needs to be reassured that UA- and the hero world- is as strong as ever.
(Me trying to make UA a competent school be like-)
All Might stays quiet during the discussion, but internally realizes that security concerns never even crossed his mind. He wonders why that is and why his younger colleagues seemed to recognize that while he didn't. He's starting to realize that there's a lot that goes on around him that he fails to recognize.
(Deconstructing All Might's toxic ideals around heroism is a very important part of the story as they're usually perpetuated through him. He's the poster boy of toxic hero society even if that isn't his intention and he doesn't realize it. Changing All Might's way of thinking- especially because of the affect is has on Izuku- is very crucial)
In the days preparing for the Sports Festival, Izuku notices how focused Uraraka is. She's been quiet, scribbling in her notebook and not being as talkative. When he asks about it, she admits to him and Iida that she needs to succeed at UA and feels like she's behind compared to the two of them. Her parents have struggled financially all her life and becoming a hero is her only chance to do right by them. She knows that it isn't a selfless, noble goal but it's been important to her all her life.
Iida assures her that wanting to provide for her parents is a noble end goal. Izuku agrees, but begins to think about his own mother. He had always had everything he needed, but Izuku knew they didn't have much money to spare. Inko had wanted to move to get him out of Aldera due to the bullying she knew about, but it just wasn't possible. His father refused to send more money from America and she could only do so much on a seamstress' salary.
He never wanted to be a hero for monetary gain, but he would like to make his mom's life a little easier, if he could.
Lunch with All Might goes about the same (it's so wholesome). The one difference is that All Might asks Izuku about his relationship with Bakugou. Izuku wasn't expecting that question and stumbles over his words, answering that they're childhood friends. But when All Might points out that Bakugou seems to be very aggressive towards him, Izuku replies with, "That's just how Kacchan is."
All Might's concerns are not alleviated by this.
The school day ends with 1A being confronted by the other classes. Bakugou is being his usual self, but Uraraka- who has found herself growing more and more annoyed with his attitude- tells him to stop being such a jerk. This stuns Izuku, who has never seen Bakugou being called out directly. But before he can process what's happening, Iida agrees, reprimanding him for his unsportsmanlike and pretentious behavior. Yaoyorozu chimes in that his actions reflect on the rest of the class and calling people "extras" is childish and not befitting a hero.
(Izuku.exe has stopped working)
Bakugou is about to rage at the three of them. Kirishima, however, brings up that while Bakugou's attitude sucks, it's unmanly for the other classes to gawk at and gossip about them. The kid in the front of the crowd- a general department student- scoffs and says that he has the chance to take one of their places in the hero course. He declares war on their class and tells them to watch their backs.
(Oh Shinsou, as pleasant as ever)
A class 1B student is also there, remarking on how unimpressive 1A appears to be. He warns 1A not to embarrass them during the Sports Festival since the audience is mostly going to be looking at them.
(Monoma being a bastard as usual)
The first event of the Sports Festival and everything leading up to it goes relatively the same. Todoroki confronts Izuku in the locker room and Izuku maintains that he'll try his best. Because Bakugou came in first during the Entrance Exam, he confidently and seriously declares that he'll win, which continues to make 1A a target.
Izuku wins with Todoroki and Bakugou coming in second and third. I'm keeping this because it's one of the best moments of the Sports Festival (the only thing I'm changing is Mineta on Yaoyorozu's back). And it sets up the Third Event well. I don't feel the need to change the Cavalry Battle that much either. I thought about having Monoma's team win instead of Shinsou's, but decided against it.
I'm also having Yaoyorozu confirm with Midnight before listening to Kaminari and Mineta about the cheerleading uniforms. She tells them that no, of course that's not a requirement for the female participants. Yaoyorozu, silently furious, scolds Kaminari and Mineta and tells them that she's reproting them to Aizawa.
Battle Tournament: Round 1
Round one basically goes the same. Except, I do have a few minor changes and one big change.
Izuku Midoriya vs Hitoshi Shinsou: I was going to change this fight, but then I realized that the OFA users snapping Izuku out of Shinsou's control was the first contact he made with the OFA users. And that's preeettty important. So I'm only changing it slightly.
Instead of OFA breaking Izuku's finger, a voice intervened before Izuku can snap at Shinsou. It's a woman's voice, reminding him of what Ojiro said and warning him not to lose his head.
She tells him that his quick thinking and ability to stay calm under pressure is one of his most valuable abilities. She tells him that keeping a level head in every situation is important. So Izuku, despite being upset as Shinsou's taunting of Ojiro, easily knocks him out of the ring.
(Nana gets scolded by the other users for intervening so soon. But she shrugs and defends that he was doing so well and just needed a little nudge in the right direction. Izuku reminds her so much of Toshinori- who she misses immeasurably- that it's hard not to get attached)
Izuku is snapped at by Shinsou, who accuses Izuku of having it easy because of his quirk. He assumes that Izuku had it easy his whole life and doesn't know what it's like to be outcast and labeled.
Izuku, who understands more than Shinsou could ever know, simply smiles. It's both kind and heartbreaking, which shocks Shinsou to his core. Izuku thanks Shinsou for the fight and tells him he can't wait to see him in the hero course one day.
Shinsou doesn't know why, but he gets the feeling that Midoriya does understand. But he doesn't know how that could be possible.
Momo Yaoyorozu vs Fumikage Tokoyami: This fight doesn't change much, but I thought I would get into Yaoyorozu's head a little here. Her entire life, she was the smart one. The one with the plan. She thought that she could face anything as long as she was smart and careful. It had worked all her life. It impressed her teachers, it made her parents proud. How could it not?
But for some reason, it never occurred to her that sometimes, she wouldn't have time for a plan. She was completely thrown off by Tokoyami's relentless assault. He didn't give her time to think or process, just kept dealing blow after blow that she couldn't counter in time.
Yaoyorozu was forced out of the ring. And she had never felt the sting of failure until that moment.
Ochako Uraraka vs Katsuki Bakugou: Uraraka has... a plan.
She distracts Bakugou as best she can. Using the smoke from his explosions, she attempts to attack him from all angles, diverting his attention from her real attack. She knows that it's risky and even a little foolish, but she has to try.
All this time, she's watched her classmates push themselves and give their all. That's something she's never done in her life. She can't be left behind, she has people counting on her. She has to succeed.
But much to her dismay, Bakugou figured out her plan. He blows up every bit of rock she had sent into the air, crushing any hopes of victory with it. Uraraka falls to the ground in dismay, fighting off tears. She's exhausted and hopeless and knows that she's going to lose. So why bother? She can't beat Bakugou.
She's been on the ground for too long. Midnight starts counting down.
5... 4...
Bakugou advances, telling her that she knew she would lose and that she should have quit earlier. He stands right in front of her, ready to deal the final blow and ring her out.
3... 2...
But something about his words make Uraraka angry. She's seen how he talks down to people. She's seen how he treats everyone as below him. She's seen how he targets Izuku who never fights back or defends himself. And she knows he's been looking down on her this whole fight.
And she's sick of it.
1-
In a fit of rage, Uraraka's arm shoots out and she grabs Bakugou's ankle. Making him weightless, she flips him over her shoulder and towards the edge of the ring. Bakugou, completely thrown off since he assumed she was defeated, falls to the ground.
Ochako Uraraka wins.
This was so, so satisfying to write this y'all don't even know. I told you guys that Uraraka's underdog story was coming. Idk what Aizawa's on about, but trying to say that Bakugou didn't look down on her was BULLSHIT. He literally told her she should have given up. So I thought, what better way to have her beat him than to use his own arrogance against him?
Every other round one fight stays the same.
Humiliated and angry, Bakugou confronts Izuku after the fight. He, through tears, accuses Izuku of telling Uraraka to fake him out and is upset that Izuku would use his weakness against him. But Izuku firmly tells him that Uraraka refused any help from him and that she won completely on her own. Bakugou doesn't believe him and tries to attack him, only for Iida to intervene and tell him to back off.
Izuku, who's never had someone stand up for him against Bakugou, is extremely touched, but also guilty when Bakugou runs away. He hadn't wanted to upset him, but he was telling the truth. He'd had nothing to do with Uraraka's victory.
And he wasn't going to stop himself from being happy for her.
Battle Tournament, Round 2:
Izuku Midoriya vs Shoto Todoroki: This fight goes relatively the same. The only thing I would change is that Izuku tells Shoto he's free to be his own hero and that what Endeavor wants doesn't matter. He encourages Shoto to reclaim his fire for himself. That's essentially what he does say in canon, but apparently Izuku haters need everything spelled out for them (eyeroll).
He loses this round, but he's not upset by it. He's just glad he could help Todoroki.
Toshinori is both proud and incredulous. Proud because Izuku helped his classmate. Incredulous because it had cost him his win. Nevertheless, Young Midoriya has impressed him greatly. This calls for a treat after the Sports Festival!
Ochako Uraraka vs Eijiro Kirishima: You know, at first I thought that Kirishima would be the winner of this fight. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Uraraka could easily win. Kirishima can't fight without touching her, which immediately gives her the advantage.
It's hard to touch Kirishima with all give of her fingers due to his quirk and attempts to rush her out of the ring, but Uraraka isn't giving up. She's determined to push herself as much as she can. Grabbing hold of his jagged flesh, she makes him weightless and kicks him square in his chest. This is enough to push him out of the ring.
Because she actually likes Kirishima, Uraraka apologizes profusely. But Kirishima is completely impressed and admires her manliness. Uraraka isn't sure how to take that, but thanks him anyway.
All the other fights stay the same.
Battle Tournament: Round 3
Ochako Uraraka vs Fumikage Tokoyami: Unfortunately, Uraraka is unable to effect Dark Shadow with her quirk. It's solid, but it seems to be able to regulate its own mass with negates her quirk's functionality.
However, she doesn't allow the fight to end quickly. She holds off against Tokoyami, dodging his attacks and targeting his body. She's able to kick his feet out from under him and gain the upper hand for a split second.
(Yaoyorozu watches enviously from the audience. How could Uraraka do that and not her? What was she missing?)
But while she did that, she momentarily forgot about Dark Shadow. It wraps around her and while she struggles futilely, it gently places her outside of the ring. Uraraka was disappointed to lose after coming so far, but she was met with an admiring smile from Izuku as she joins him in the audience. He commends her for getting so far and tells her she did a really good job. Uraraka blushes and compliments his performance back.
They sit back and watch together as Iida loses to Todoroki. He joins them in the stands as they offer apologies, but Iida waves them off with a smile. His phone rings and he goes to answer it.
Izuku and Uraraka don't see him again for the rest of the event.
Battle Tournament: Round 3
Shoto Todoroki vs Fumikage Tokoyami: Even though Todoroki doesn't feel the same disdain towards his left side, he still hesitates to use his fire. It still came from Endeavor, no matter how much he wishes he could reclaim it as his own like Izuku advised him to.
He thinks that maybe someday he could manage to use it without seeing it as what drove him mother away. But for now, he's unable to stand bringing the heat to his palm. It burns, even though it realistically shouldn't.
Tokoyami is thankful that Todoroki doesn't use his fire. If he had, then he might have negated Dark Shadow resulting in his victory. But because Shoto is exhausted from his earlier display of power against Sero, it gives Tokoyami the upper hand. He's able to maneuver Dark Shadow around Todoroki's defenses of ice and slam it into him.
Todoroki gets knocked away and falls outside the ring. He collapses from the emotional and physical toll and passes out.
Fumikage Tokoyami has won the Sports Festival.
FINAL RESULTS:
1st Place - Fumikage Tokoyami
2nd Place - Shoto Todoroki
3rd Place - Ochako Uraraka & Tenya Iida
All Might hands out the medals to the winners, though Iida is suspiciously absent. Izuku is happy for his friends, though he wishes he could have performed a little better. But he's cheered up by a call to his mom, who's simultaneously worried about and proud of him.
Izuku knows his mom loves him and knows that she would do anything for him. But to hear those words from her in support of his dream... It breaks something in him. He starts crying, thanking her and quickly hanging up.
He's so glad to hear those words from his mother, but he can't help but wish he had gotten those words of encouragement from her sooner.
Notes:
Of course it's right after I say I was struggling with this arc that it all comes to me. Idk, rewriting Hawks got me motivated
I seriously debated having Uraraka beat Bakugou. I wondered if it was even possible at this point. But the more I thought about it, the more I realize she didn't have to overpower him. Bakugou's biggest weakness is his ego. All she had to do was target that. My original plan was to have Bakugou lose to Todoroki but you know what? Fuck that, this is Uraraka's underdog story
So the thing with Izuku vs Shinsou. I did think that OFA breaking his fingers out of nowhere was... dumb. Like, it just came out of nowhere to get Izuku out of that situation. I think the OFA users gently guiding him throughout the story before revealing themselves makes a lot more sense. Also, I love Nana
I actually do think Tokoyami could have beaten Todoroki at this point. Tokoyami had relatively easy fights before this. He only lost to Bakugou in canon because Bakugou had an inherent advantage. Todoroki not using his fire + him using all his energy against Sero and Izuku means that the fight was in Tokoyami's favor
I intentionally didn't give Iida a lot of focus because all of his major characterization is being saved for Stain
There was no glazing from Aizawa or booing from the heroes in the Uraraka vs Bakugou fight. Both were dumb and plot manipulation in canon

Fixing Hawks
Stuck on the Sports Festival Arc right now so I thought I'd address what's probably going to be the biggest character change of the rewrite. This will be slightly spoiler-y for the rest of the rewrite so be warned.
Hawks' backstory mostly stays the same. Keigo's father is abusive and his mother takes him on the run. His father eventually gets arrested by Endeavor and he's scouted by the HPSC. His mother basically trades him in exchange for a luxurious life and exoneration for her involvement in her husband's affairs
Keigo is trained diligently to be one of the top heroes and a poster boy for heroism. But he's being turned into a weapon, learning to kill with no hesitation. Being taught that his targets aren't like the people who need protecting, that they need to die for the sake of peace and order
When Keigo turns eight, his training is primarily handed over to his senior, Kaina Tsutsumi. She's different than his other teachers, she's kind and funny and treats him like a person instead of a weapon
But Kaina is spiraling. Keigo is too young to fully understand, but even he can see that her actions are becoming more erratic. She's hesitating on missions and her disdain towards their superiors is something she can't hide. He doesn't understand; aren't they supposed to do what they're told? When he asks her about it, she tells him that their superiors aren't as righteous as they pretend to be. She tells him that by doing their work for them, she's just as bad. But she tells him that he has a chance to be better. She implores him to do what he thinks is right, even if their superiors would condemn it
Despite this, him and Kaina remain close. She's the only one who's ever cared about him as well as being the only person he's ever known how to care about. When the toll of their job gets to be too much, he finds comfort and warmth in her presence. He doesn't remember his mother's face, but when he thinks of her, it's Kaina's smile he envisions
Kaina is arrested by the time he turns nine. She killed the HPSC president and was locked away in Tartarus for it. And Keigo is left alone once again
For a few years, he doesn't take her words to heart. He's given a job to do and he fulfills it perfectly every time. Sometimes, his superiors ask about anything Kaina told him, but out of respect and loyalty for her he acts stupid. Pretends that he hadn't understood anything she said. They seem to believe him, as he doesn't hesitate to get the job done
Things change when Keigo becomes a hero. Thanks to the Commission's ruthless training, he quickly breaks into the Top 10. He's never interacted with citizens on a social level, so he tries to mirror Kaina the best he can: calm, coy, and playful. It seems to work as his demeanor does well at putting people at-ease
His first kill as a hero is the day he understands what Kaina was trying to tell him all those years ago. The blood stains his hands even when he washes it away. How can he smile in these people's face when he's as vile as the murderers they condemn? How can he pretend to be virtuous when he's covering up the cracks in society? He's no hero. But in this society where the good guys are no better than the bad guys, do heroes even exist?
It's on this day that Keigo Takami becomes determined to change the corruption he's been trained to uphold and protect. No matter the cost
I will always be pissed about how Horikoshi missed every opportunity with Hawks. He was the perfect character to expose the HPSC and society and try to change things for the better. Instead, he perpetuates the cycle of abuse and corruption, and becomes the HPSC president for some reason?? Horikoshi wtf.
At every angle, Hawks has been stripped of his autonomy. Not only did he unknowingly admire an abuser despite being a victim of abuse himself, once he found out there was zero reflection. He never got to rise up against or call out the HPSC despite being forced to be a child assassin. What pisses me off is that these things could have easily been fixed. A panel or so to reflect on his misplaced admiration of Endeavor would have been doable. Having him talk to Lady Nagant after Izuku beat her would have been doable.
But Hawks doesn't get to be anything more than a prop for Endeavor despite being in the perfect place narratively to address everything wrong in MHA society.
I kind of changed the timeline since Kaina is 16 years older than Keigo and would have been arrested when he was seven. Gave them a couple of years together. Because for some reason Hawks isn't allowed to have any relationships past an abusive middle-aged man

USJ Arc
The stuff with the reporters goes the same. But I like to imagine that instead of just shooting them away, Aizawa loses his temper with them a little because the press agitates him. He also isn't fond of them recording his students because, y'know, I'm trying to make him somewhat decent in this.
I'm actually gagging at Aizawa telling Bakugou to stop wasting his talent because wtf I don't remember that
Aizawa scolds Bakugou for not being mindful of his quirk and Izuku for injuring himself, similarly to canon. He also berates Mineta for abandoning his teammate and being lazy. He commends Momo, Todoroki, and (to her surprise) Uraraka for their well-earned victories. Though, he does tell Uraraka that her combat needs work.
Aizawa allows 1A to vote for their class representatives like in canon. But unlike canon, Izuku votes for Yaoyorozu, which gives Yaoyorozu three votes and Izuku two. He thought about voting for himself like everyone else, but decided against it because he doesn't picture himself as a ready to be a leader. He remembers Yaoyorozu detailed plan and thinks she would be a better fit. But he's surprised that he did get two other votes (from Uraraka and Iida respectively).
The rest of the episode/chapter goes the same. Iida successfully deescalates his panicking peers and Izuku acknowledges that he's better to help lead their class. So Yaoyorozu remains 1A's representative while Iida becomes the vice representative.
(One thing I find interesting about Izuku's actions in canon is that he voted for himself, but didn't think he would win and is nervous when he does. He doubts himself as a leader, which isn't wrong. Izuku tends to let a lot of things pass him by. But we see in the USJ- and the provisional licensing exam- that he has no issues taking charge. I think this is for two reasons: a) he's way more likely to act if someone's in danger or needs help and b) he waits for someone to look to him to lead. Tsu and Mineta needed him to tell them what to do, so he easily steps up. It's basically leading his peers through a dangerous situation versus controlling/directing a group.)
The USJ trip doesn't undergo any major changes, I would say. Most things are still the same.
Tsu watches how Izuku easily takes charge, plans, and gets Mineta to start whining and wonders why he gave up being vice rep, only for him to start muttering which creeps her out. She remarks that he has no issues navigating people through danger, but notes that his social skills need work. Izuku stumbles a bit, but internally acknowledges that she's not wrong.
With Bakugou and Kirishima, instead of blindly admiring him, Kirishima actually clashes a bit with Bakugou. Because he feels as though their actions were what gave Kurogiri the opportunity to scatter them before Thirteen could suck him in. Bakugou refusing the acknowledge that leaves a bad taste in his mouth. He tells Bakugou that he likes his strength and grit, but that his attitude is immature and "unmanly." Bakugou snaps at him that he doesn't care what he thinks goes after Kurogiri since he's where the villains are coming from. Kirishima still follows after him partly because he thinks Bakugou is right to attack the warp villain and partly because he thinks they should stick together.
I don't feel the need to change everything else. EXCEPT regarding Tomura when he goes on the spiel that All Might calls out as bullshit, he doesn't confirm that it is, nor does he deny it.
I think that Tomura DOES actually believe that to some degree, because those are things that AFO has told him. I think he's just repeating what he's heard, which is justification for the things AFO has done/endorsed. However, I do think that All Might was right calling him out as craving violence. Tomura at this point is an overzealous child. He doesn't have a goal other than kill and destroy hero society.
But- at least for this story- he doesn't know why hero society is corrupt. I wonder if that will change soon.
(foreshadowing)
Notes:
I struggled so hard with this arc, which is why there aren't major changes to it. But there also aren't too many issues with it, in my opinion
If you can't tell, I'm still deciding whether or not I want to redeem Bakugou. But I still think either way that Kirishima should be put-off by his rotten attitude, even if he does admire his tenacity
I never noticed until I reread, but Izuku really did inspire Mineta in this arc. I've noticed Mineta's early characterization wasn't nearly as abysmal as he was in the middle of the series. Horikoshi even made a note about not overdoing it with his pervyness (he failed)
Izuku is a very awkward bean, so I have no qualms about not making him rep or vice rep. I think it's a testament to his character that he can take charge during a threat but totally clams up in front of people
I love Iida, but let's be real Momo was robbed of her presidency. I think Iida's a great rep in canon, but this was the start of Momo getting screwed
I was gonna change Momo, Kaminari, and Jiro's fight, but I decided against it because I don't want to turn Momo into a Mary Sue. Her freezing and being unable to think on her feet is something I really wanna get into
I'm very excited for the Sports Festival :)

I used the term "redeemable" deliberately. Rehabilitation should be the goal for all of them if I can manage to write it that way, but I want to know who you think is most likely to turn over a new leaf of their own accord

I already added this on the rule post, but I'm going to make a new post for it just in case people don't see it.
Please keep asks focused on THIS rewrite. This blog isn't meant for giving advice or critiquing ideas for your own rewrites. If I'm ignoring your asks I'm not trying to be mean, but it just doesn't pertain to what I want to do here. I'm going to be deleting the asks I've already answered about this because it feels as though the blog is getting cluttered with them.
This is completely my fault because I thought I clarified that in the initial rule post. So don't apologize or feel like I'm attacking any of you, okay?

What if Bakugo was only aggro on the battlefield/in battle? Would that improve or detract?
It might make him more tolerable as a character, but it would still make him a pretty shit hero. Bakugou's aggressiveness on the field has been detrimental to himself and the other characters. He got Thirteen seriously hurt because he couldn't follow orders, he just had to attack the villains even though he was told not to.
Now would it improve his character writing wise? I really couldn't say. It could come off as him being inconsistent

I'm gonna be completely real... I feel like BNHA should've been more about the LOV fighting to change a corrupt system instead of what we got.
They're way more interesting than the cardboard heroes and that they actually had a point in how things were and wanted to change that.
And that the ending would've been something similar to the ending in the DLC We All Fall Down from We Happy Few. Where now the people hate them, with time others will start to realize that they really did the right thing.
I like the idea of them meeting somewhere in the middle.
Because when you think about it, the heroes suffer a lot of the same things the villains do. Hawks and Nagant were exploited children raised to be assassins and used to do the HPSC's dirty work. Izuku, Shoji, and Monoma faced discrimination. Shoto was abused.
Someone, forgot the name, made a good point a few weeks back. That MHA is the only series that pits victims against each other instead of the abusers. And in a lot of ways, that's right. Because other series do that, but in a way that it's obvious and supposed to be something that's called out and amended.
A great example of this being The Hunger Games. The Districts are pit against each other to keep them separated and foster animosity so that they won't rise up against The Capitol. That's why some Districts are kept in poverty while others prosper. The only way to resolve this is to unify the Districts by making them realize that the true enemy here is the corrupt system.
I was waiting for the LOV to start to actually be the ones to teach Tomura this because let's be real, he's sheltered. What he knows about heroes was a bad experience one night and everything AFO told him. The other members actually lived through and faced corruption firsthand. Tomura didn't actually have a plan in the beginning; he wanted to destroy heroes but he didn't actually know why. Not until he formed the LOV. But the majority of the LOV's goals didn't align with Tomura's in the beginning, they aligned with Stain's.
Spinner, Dabi, and Toga even explicitly state that they were only joining the League because of its (fake) connection to Stain. Spinner because he wanted a world with justice and equality. Dabi because of his detestation for false heroes. Toga because she felt a kinship with Stain due to their quirks and wanted to find people like her after being outcast and shunned for so long.
And if we take these goals/motivations for what they are, they aren't bad at all. In fact, I would even say that they're reasonable. I barely counted Spinner as a villain until the Final War because he believed in true heroes and wanted equality for people like him, he even saved Izuku from Magne. Out of all of the LOV, he would have been the easiest to redeem.
(Yes I'm still mad that Horikoshi ruined him leave me alone)
The problem is, those goals were undermined by their actions later. They were either completely disregarded (Dabi), simplified (Toga), or contradicted (Spinner). Horikoshi basically said screw their established characters, they're one dimensional mustache twirlers with no substance. Every character who points out the flaws of society is demonized to justify the status quo.
And this is actually why I take issue with the whole every character having a villain thing. Because this shouldn't be a case of Hero vs Villain. We shouldn't be looking at the LOV like obstacles to defeat, or even to save. We should be listening to them. The goal here should have been to make a better world where what happened to them doesn't happen to anyone else.
My Hero Academia should have been a story of change, not war. And I think that's going to be the heart of this rewrite

MHA should have been a slice of life with superpowers academia type of thing, like the name My Hero ACADEMIA suggests. But nah, Hori went with child soldiers...
Your ask really has me thinking that the Final War was really unnecessary.
Like, it didn't HAVE to happen. There have been so many criticisms of the Final War and I think that's because it feels like Horikoshi forcing conflict without actually providing substance to the characters IN that conflict. Even the PLA War and everything leading to it wasn't really necessary.
(The only one I feel is justified is the Todoroki family vs Dabi because this is less about beating a villain and more about reaching out to a lost family member)
It's not even in like Attack on Titan where the message is literally anti-war. Violence begets violence and those children you forced to fight developed psychological issues because they're being used as weapons to fight a war they have no involvement in.
You know what's wild? That the narrative treats Rock Lock as problematic WHEN HE WAS RIGHT. Izuku and Mirio were KIDS still learning to be heroes. He wasn't being an asshole, he was the only one being a responsible adult.
The question is how I'll incorporate this into the rewrite

Me realizing I reblogged this with the wrong account🤦🏾♀️ Oh well, I'm too lazy to change it
Battle Trials Arc
The start of this arc mostly goes the same. They try on their hero outfits and get ready for their first Heroics class with All Might. Of course, Inko made Izuku his suit (it's so ugly but she made it with love I had to leave it in). I'm keeping their suits the same in canon for now but rest assured, most of them will be getting major upgrades later. All Might announces the Battle Trials and teams are assigned.
First thing's first, I'm changing some of the teams.
Team A: Midoriya & Yaoyorozu - Hero Team B: Mineta & Todoroki - Hero Team C: Hagakure & Uraraka - Villain Team I: Ojiro & Shoji - Villain
Everyone else is staying the same! Hagakure and Uraraka are fighting Kaminari and Jiro and Izuku and Yaoyorozu are fighting Bakugou and Iida. Mineta and Todoroki are fighting Ojiro and Shoji. Look up the rest of the teams if you can't remember them because I'm too lazy to write them out.
Round 1: Team A vs Team D
Izuku is anxious for two reasons: one, he's fighting Bakugou and two, Yaoyorozu is intimidating as hell. He has no idea how to even approach working with her
Izuku suggests using himself as bait. Yaoyorozu isn't opposed to it, but she knows a) Izuku's quirk isn't fully functional, b) Bakugou has a bad temper with an explosive quirk, and c) Bakugou has some sort of weird vendetta against Izuku
The two get into a little bit of an argument. Izuku wants to face Bakugou head-on, but Yaoyorozu isn't interested in indulging what she interprets as a petty rivalry especially if the outcome is dangerous. But they're running out of time and they need to make a decision
There's a small heart to heart. Izuku briefly explains his past with Bakugou (he doesn't go into detail, but it's enough for Yaoyorozu- a virtual stranger- to be a little concerned). Yaoyorozu understands having to prove yourself- she's had to do it since she was a kid- so it makes her a little more receptive to his insistence
Yaoyorozu explains her quirk to Izuku (who's taking mental notes) and they come up with a plan. Izuku will use himself as bait, but with precaution. Yaoyorozu created little speakers with her quirk that she places around the building as she goes to secure the bomb from Iida. Those speakers are attached to a little microphone Izuku will be using to taunt Bakugou and lure him as far away from the bomb as possible. He'll have Bakugou cornered and attack him from behind while Yaoyorozu confronts Iida
The fight between Bakugou and Izuku goes about the same as it does in canon (so does their conversation). However, because of Yaoyorozu's fear of damage and injury, Izuku doesn't use Bakugou to blow up the ceiling. Instead, he continuously dodges Bakugou's attacks until Bakugou- careless of his surroundings- ends up destroying the surrounding wall so much that dust clouds his vision and Izuku punches him in the face. It's momentarily stunning, but it's not enough to stop Bakugou who's pissed. He's about to advance on Izuku again when-
All Might's voice announces that Team A wins. While Bakugou was fighting Izuku, Yaoyorozu confronted Iida with a staff. They began fighting and Iida was overpowering her, however, it was just a distraction. Momo dropped smoke bombs once she was close enough to the bomb, successfully securing it before Iida could recover. Izuku and Yaoyorozu win with a near flawless victory, minus Izuku's injuries
Bakugou is pissed. He's never lost before, least of all to Deku. He's going to make that nerd pay for looking down on him like he did
Iida is disappointed in himself. If he had paid more attention, he might have seen through Yaoyorozu's ruse
Round 2: Team B vs Team I
Todoroki goes into the fight overconfident. He tells Mineta go outside for his safety as he intends to dominate the fight
However, what he wasn't aware of was that Shoji heard him say this. With the knowledge that it was a two on one match, him and Ojiro devise a plan
Ojiro goes down to confront Todoroki immediately, who instantly freezes him in place. He yells to "Shoji" in the next corridor to run before the ice can catch him too. Todoroki spreads his ice in the direction that Ojiro yelled out
But Shoji wasn't there. He was with the bomb, guarding it while Shoto spent five minutes trying to find where Ojiro was. When he couldn't, he spread the ice to the entire building and entrapped him, just like he did in canon. He then easily secures the bomb
Team B won, but Todoroki is stunned that he was momentarily outsmarted. Still, his show of power took everyone by surprise, especially Bakugou who had never seen the raw power from anyone his age before
Round 3: Team C vs Team G
Uraraka and Hagakure are woefully unprepared for Kaminari and Jirou. Their plan is simple; Uraraka stays and guards the bomb while Hagakure goes and sneaks up on their opponents
It almost works. Hagakure is easily able to take out Jirou, but cannot dodge a blow from Kaminari. He takes her out with no issues and goes to confront Uraraka
Uraraka, who has almost no combat experience, loses almost immediately. Kaminari has so much more power than her he's almost taunting her. In an act of desperation, she floats the bomb and herself to the ceiling where Kaminari can't reach them. Kaminari can't reach the bomb. She keeps them both near the vents, so he has no chance of jumping up and securing either her or the bomb. He knocks her down with a shot at the last minute
Time runs out. Team C wins, just barely. It doesn't feel like a win for Uraraka, though. She was completely outmatched against Kaminari and only won because of the time. After seeing how powerful her classmates are, she feels like she's majorly behind. She doesn't want to be left behind. She thinks a lot about Izuku's fight, how he predicted Bakugou's attacks and used them against him.
(I'm not doing the rest because I'm focusing on main characters and what's changing for those characters. Izuku, Yaoyorozu, Iida, Uraraka, Todoroki, and Asui will be the characters focused on the most. I didn't describe Asui's battle because she really shows out at the USJ. I'd like to give all of 1A justice because they do deserve better, but I can't balance 20 characters at once. Forgive me if a lot of them fade into the background)
After he comes back from Recovery Girl, Izuku's classmates praise him like they did in canon. They tell him that his actions really inspired them. He is extremely embarrassed by it and bashfully points out that it was Yaoyorozu's plan that got him the win. Yaoyorozu is surprised, but pleased by this. Uraraka comes in and compliments him on what he did, as she's also very inspired. He thanks her, but asks where Bakugou is.
Izuku runs out to stop Bakugou before he can leave. He feels unbelievably guilty, but he doesn't know why. The fact that Bakugou seemed to upset gnaws at him, like he did something terrible by not telling him about OFA.
But another part of him doesn't understand that. It's not like he always had OFA and was intentionally hiding it. And even if he was, why would Bakugou even care? He made it quite clear a long time ago that they weren't friends so why-
Izuku, feeling guilty, is about to reveal his secret. He's about to tell Bakugou that he inherited his quirk. He almost says it.
1A watches from the window. Asui, Ashido, and Uraraka look on in concern, worried that Bakugou will lash out. But Iida and Yaoyorozu watch carefully from their seats out of the corner of their eyes; Iida because he's ready to intervene if things get violent, but Yaoyorozu for a completely different reason.
But All Might comes out seemingly out of nowhere. He's ecstatic to see them, complimenting them both of their performance. He gentle critiques them, but stresses their heroic attributes. Bakugou, angry and humiliated by his failure, tells him off and proclaims that he'll surpass him. He stomps off, leaving Izuku and All Might alone.
Izuku guiltily admits that he almost gave away the secret and apologizes. All Might flails for a moment, but composes himself and assures him that he understands. There were moments he wanted to tell friends to (specifically talking about David Shield), but had to refrain for their safety and his own. He stresses that Izuku cannot tell anyone he doesn't trust 100%, who he knows will have his back in his toughest moments.
Izuku takes this to heart.
But unknown to him, All Might's timing wasn't random. Toshinori had been surprised when Yaoyorozu came to him with her concerns. She had admitted that Izuku didn't outright confess anything actually wrong, but was insistent that Bakugou's actions during the Battle Trials shouldn't be taken lightly.
Toshinori decides to keep a more careful eye on how Bakugou and Izuku interact.
Notes:
Rewatching season 1 hits different. The characterization was so much better. Unpopular opinion, but season 1 Bakugou is a lot less annoying to me. One thing he did was reflect and actually own up to what he did wrong and took accountability for the loss, which s3-current Bakugou just... doesn't do. This feels so fucking bizarre to say, but I can actually sympathize with him a little bit more (just a tiny bit). He's still a violent POS who whines a lot, but he's not as irritating
You can really see early on how much 1A prefers Izuku over Bakugou. And how could they not? Bakugou was immediately mean to them and Izuku "stood up" to him. Of course they admired him. Horikoshi should have kept this going
Momo is going to be a bit different. Still kind and compassionate, but more reserved and logical like she was in the early arcs. Her relationship with Izuku will be... interesting. They're low-key rivals too, but more in a "they're both so smart but two completely different kinds of smart so they butt heads" way. They also become best frenemies because I said so
Speaking of Momo, her going to All Might was her being a good chap. I can see early Momo being completely uncomfortable with Bakugou's behavior and concerned with him potentially hurting Izuku or anyone else (she unknowingly just saved Izuku's character arc, all hail Queen Momo). Horikoshi made her so docile against Bakugou when early Momo was completely unapologetic in her dressing down of him
Todoroki's round wasn't meant to disparage his power or skill. It was to a) show off Shoji a little more because his quirk is underrated and b) to show that even though he's hella powerful, he isn't perfect and has weaknesses. I also did this to show that UA is supposed to be the best hero school in the world. The majority of its students are going to be at least competent. The ones at the "bottom" right now are Jiro, Aoyama, Hagakure, Mineta, and Uraraka (no particular order)
Uraraka's underdog story is something I'm very excited to write

Quirk Apprehension Test Arc
I think I am gonna go hardass Aizawa route, but one who treats his students equally. He'll still be an asshole, but I think I'm gonna set him up to get called out.
His introduction doesn't change much. He's still in his sleeping bag and still does the QAT instead of orientation. But he has the 1A do two separate tests; one to test their quirk usage and the other to test their physical ability. And he doesn't threaten to expel them (that was never a stipulation of the test), this is just a way for him to find out what needs to be worked on.
Izuku does well on the physical tests, but struggles a lot with the quirk tests. The ball scene still happens, but Aizawa a) doesn't threaten to expel Izuku and b) tears into Bakugou about using his quirk irresponsibly and against his classmates.
Class Ranking for Physical Test (the Quirk Test ranking stays the same):
Eijiro Kirishima
Mashirao Ojiro
Mezo Shoji
Rikido Sato
Tenya Iida
Mina Ashido
Shoto Todoroki
Katsuki Bakugou
Fumikage Tokoyami
Izuku Midoriya
Momo Yaoyorozu
Koji Koda
Tsuyu Asui
Denki Kaminari
Hanta Sero
Ochako Uraraka
Minoru Mineta
Toru Hagakure
Yuga Aoyama
Kyoka Jirou
So, the reason I had Aizawa do a physical test too is because I find it so weird how quirk oriented he is in canon. Someone who literally erases quirks and isn't given any physical advantage from his should be aware that a) heroes should be proficient without relying on a quirk and b) a strong quirk isn't needed to be an efficient hero. He should also have a distaste for people who are reckless with their quirks (which he does have for Izuku but not Bakugou?? Weird). This is where him being inconsistent really comes into play.
(It's like Horikoshi goes out of his way to have canon reinforce quirkism, it's weird)
Don't get me wrong, he's still an asshole. He still thinks Izuku was being lazy with his quirk and he still thinks that Izuku is also to blame for him and Bakugou's awful relationship. But he's way harder on Bakugou than in canon and disciplines him more. Like I said, he's going to get called out for his judgmental behavior and arrogance.
To add to this, Iida and Uraraka seeing Bakugou about to attack Izuku is the start to both of them really disliking him. Iida already didn't like him because of his feet on the desk (based Iida, I can't stand people who do this), but Uraraka, who grew up poor, can't stand his entitled and privileged attitude. She tries to see the good in everyone, but Bakugou makes it hard. She hates that he looks down on others and thinks he's better than everyone else. She would love to knock him down a few pegs.
(foreshadowing)
#mha rewrite#bnha critical#mha critical#anti aizawa shota#anti bakugou katsuki#quirk apprehension test#don't @ me for that mina placement#she's possibly the most agile in the class and she DANCES#i also tried to factor in how characters like shoto momo and bakugou rely on their quirk#which is why they're a lot lower than in the qat#kirishima's on top bc come on he literally has workout equipment in his room i don't think calling him the most physically fit is a stretc#i also firmly believe that jiro is physically the weakest in the class
