Autism for non autistic people:
Imagine waking up every day and the first thing that happens is you get bombarded by sound, light; touch, smell. Everything is so loud and bright that it can overpower you. Imagine walking outside with the cars rushing (even when they are at a slow speed, the noise and the breeze gets to you) by and the people talking and the even when the sun isn’t shining the light from the sky is so bright it just hits you like a wall of whiteness:.. a sensory overload.
Certain things you touch make you cringe or uncomfortable just by touching them like bumpy surfaces or for some people it could be wet things or squidgyness etc or textures when you eat.
In the spring you can hear the birds and wildlife around you getting on with their day.
All the time everything that happens you are aware of it, even when you are minding your own business. The smallest of details you are able to notice.
When you are around people you struggle to engage with them and even when you do you often end up on the edge of the crowd sticking out like a sore thumb and to you it feels like it can be awkward or draw attention to yourself just cos you feel like you don’t fit it completely, just because you have your own quirks that others don’t understand, and cos you struggle to communicate effectively.
pretty much everything you do can provoke anxiety to some degree, especially socially.
And when you are in your own environment you have a need to control it in your own way, everything has its place, and particular way of doing things, and when this gets disturbed or changed it can cause some upset or distress.
When you go places or things are going to happen which a different from your day to day life like going on trips or on holiday or to see a doctor or somewhere new you have a need to know exactly what will happen to prepare you for the days onslaught of senses.
Imagine being able to remember particular things like maps or places like you were still there, like it was still happening, vivid and bright, and certain memories but for no reason and certain things can trigger these to come to you randomly and that your thoughts can simply be so vivid, everything that comes to mind can feel like your thoughts are speaking to you when they are not.
when it comes to learning knew things, in some areas ie areas that involve using language you can struggle to process new information unless it’s given to you in a way you can cope, which is different from person to person, and you can struggle to communicate. What you say to people makes sense to you but often doesn’t make sense to them first time, sometimes cos that’s the way it is and other times it comes out in waffle or jargon, or long winded and people often just want you to get to the point, but to you that’s what you are doing, being to the point, and to you it simply makes sense.
From the inside it feels like the world looks at you like are a little different, or even weird and you simply know that other people just don’t understand just by the way they deal With you or talk to you (like you are like everyone else who is not autistic), but to you, you just know this is who you are and to you, you simply are just normal.
