A howlin’ Australian rock band, a mighty blues band reunion and a killer first-ever live set were all features of last Friday’s KLIB Relaunch Party. From 9pm on, bands played to a packed out Mr. Beery’s while attendees chugged down  pints of craft beer, and snuck out to the back between sets for snacks from the RV, lovingly dubbed the “Meat Wagon”, stationed in the  parking lot. Our photographer caught the white-hot powerhouse set from newcomers Melissa Raye, the first set after a brief hiatus from neo-bluesy rock group Matt Stoll & the Enablers, and the charismatic as ever Freya Wilcox & the Howl playing bare-knuckled punked out blues. Check out the photos from the show in our sideshow below.

Today's Mixtape Festival Announces Full Lineup
Today’s Mixtape Festival Announces Full Lineup
Tumblr media
The full lineup for this year’s Today’s Mixtape Festival was announced earlier this month.  They will be taking over The Emporium in Patchogue on August 15th and 16th.  For those unfamiliar, this is the fourth year of the festival and, just like previous lineups, the Mixtape brings some major players in the pop-punk and hardcore scenes to Long Island for a two-day extravaganza. This year, the…

Fairhaven and Friends Take Over Twisted Shamrock
Tumblr media
There is something to be said for the resiliency of the Long Island ska scene.  We, like many others around the country, are a small group of people who refuse to let go of the music that makes us happy, even though much of the population has moved past it (after all, it’s not 1998 anymore, is it?).  We hold on to ideals; we hold on to nostalgia and, most importantly, we hold on to each other. …

KLIB Weekly Mixtape 6/15: Punk Island 2015
This Father’s Day, don’t buy your dad another stupid tie.  Your dad doesn’t need another stupid tie.  Your dad wants to go to an all day punk rock festival (don’t let him tell you otherwise, he just doesn’t want to admit it).  And if he just can’t wait that long, share this playlist with him.  Included are tunes from a small few of the almost 100 bands playing over 7 stages.  Tons of bands from…

Who are you and what do you do?
Gabriel Corti, a Farmingdale University student, likes to paint murals. Considers himself a muralist not a street artist. His tag is AWEZ.
Why do you do what you do?
He’s always been fascinated with lettering. He’d be in history class doodling an “A” or “L” and liking it, but not knowing why he was always drawn to it. Becoming a graphic design major helped develop his interest in lettering and typography. He was into lettering, and then that progressed to developing an interest in recreating the human body. He includes letters and human figures in his pieces.
How did you start making art and why?
As a senior in high school he actually got into making art, driven by his lettering fascination.
Where do you draw most of your inspiration from?
Many of the French Renaissance masters, and Caravaggio, Vermeer, and  Michelangelo. The lettering and feel of his murals are influenced by Zeso, Bacon, Meres, and Zimer. Gabe has a semi-“wild style” and NY “work style”.
What themes do you pursue?
He doesn’t like to paint the same thing over–usually his pieces are based on whatever inspires him at the time.
How do you know when a work is finished?
“I Don’t. It just feels right” For him, it’s more of a visual feeling. He’ll start with sketches to plan the placement, size, scale of a piece, but it never looks the same when finished from the sketch. The sketch is often just a reference or starting point and he goes from there.
What is the most important tool? Is there something you cant live without?
Spray paint cap. Favorite caps: Pink dot fat cap and MTN94 stock (cap that comes standard on most cans).
What role do you think graffiti has in society?
Graffiti has become more interesting and approachable. August Martin High School allowed him to paint there. The art form has certainly been seen as a more negative thing but is slowly becoming more acceptable. Graffiti is public art and society has loved public art over the years. People like seeing lettering, character, and spray paint.
How do you think street art differs from gallery art besides the obvious location difference?
Gallery art has an exclusivity to it but street art is for everybody. If it’s on the street anyone can see it and come to take photos.
How do you choose the subject that you plan to paint?
He’ll find it interesting and feel as though there’s something right about it. He says that he can go through 100s of photos on google, but one can just hit him and he’ll just know–it’ll click. “Why do I choose what to be done? Cause I’ve never seen it done. If it has been done then I’ll do it in a totally unique way.”
How do you feel about people who are against street art?
They are closed minded and unwilling to accept change. However, Gabe doesn’t like gang tags or  needlessly offensive graffiti. He’s supportive if appropriate for location and public.
What is one thing you hope people will takeaway from viewing your art?
“My name is AWEZ. It’s because my work leaves people in shock and awe. Hope it changes their mind on what you can do with a spray can.”

Gabe likes knowing people on instagram find his work and tag him. Check him out, and find more from him at awezart.com.
All work is freehand. No projectors, no stencils. All spray paint.
Photography and profile compiled by Alexis Spinelle.

Taukin' Dirty
Taukin’ Dirty
“WHY WOULD YOU TEASE US LIKE THAT?!”
A desperate cry resonates throughout the small venue as Tauk finishes their sound check. The band, hailing from Oyster Bay, won’t hit for another 15 minutes, but the crowd is already ripe with anticipation and seething with excitement.
For those unfamiliar, Tauk is a quartet, featuring Matt Jalbert on guitar, Charlie Dolan on bass, Alric Carter on keys and…
