The name's Jayla. I'm 19 and currently living in Chicago, Illinois. Art has always been in my life and it wasn't until my freshmen year of highschool that I discovered the joy of photography. I'll mostly be posting art I like and my original works(photos, editing videos, and sketches).

I still make art 😂I had to take a painting class as an art education requirement and it was an adventure! I wouldn’t have made it through this class without my friend Emmett. #blackartists #selfportrait #tarotcards #tarot #saic https://www.instagram.com/p/BsRVdm-l1Jm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1q98nibohf9id

I’ve been doing a lot of writing this summer and I’ve slacked on making visual art. This was one of my first attempts at Cmyk Screenprinting! I didn’t quite make it to YK, because it fit for my project. #saicstudentwork #screenprinting #blackartist #genderfluid #cmykscreenprinting

Contemporary Black Artists on Tumblr
Have you popped into the Black artists on Tumblr tag yet? It’s an endless scroll of GIFs, photography, paintings, illustrations, and more, more, more. Here’s a small collection of Tumblrs you can follow to get you started:
The Artist Akuji (@theartistakuji)
Tumblr media
Beautiful digital art that just feels clean, fresh, and pleasing to look at. The artist’s Jamaican-American background shines through in a lot of her work, like this West Indie piece.
Maya Ajani (@mayaajani)
Tumblr media
Gritty, detailed, cool as hell marker art. Everything is a little bit gnarled up and raw and, just to repeat with deserved emphasis, cool as hell.
Liam Gavyn Salt (@liamgavynsalt)
Tumblr media
Liam Salt dabbles in seemingly all things visual art: painting, digital, photography, illustration. He does it all well, but It’s his GIFed up self-portraits that we wanted to showcase. Those are some finely tuned, well-thought-out scribbles up there.
Into this stuff? Want more of it? Right over here.
Don’t miss our upcoming BHM Answer Times. Next week we’ll have:
2/6—The activists behind the TheBlackout movement (@theblackoutofficial) are already taking your questions. Ask them about the second anniversary of #blackout, the current goals and future of their mission, or anything else you find relevant.
2/7—Fashion designer Jerome Lamaar (@531jerome).
2/8—Emil Wilbekin (@worldofwilbekin), fashion journalist and LGBTQ rights activist.

Artist: Jayla Neely
Titled: A Coven’s Brew
Created: 2012
Wow this a pretty old photo for me. I think I created it my sophomore year of high school, I’m now a sophomore in college and my work has grown so much. I still make a lot of mistakes but it’s ok because I’m still learning and always will be.
Witchcraft has always been something that I’ve been intrigued by but never actually looked into. When I created this composite, I tried to create something that you could make a story about about and I think I did. For me this image is about sisterhood, what does it mean to you? Is it about sisterhood? Love? Or nothing at all? Please let me know what you think, even if this photo is old to me I can still learn from it! (please do not remove my text)
