✦ ˚ How to recognize an Anxiety attack

Hey everybody, this is a bit different than my usual content, but I want to spread some information that might help with recognizing an anxiety attack!

✦ What is an anxiety attack?
An anxiety attack is a period of intense worry or fear that builds up gradually, often triggered by stress, specific situations, or ongoing thoughts. Unlike panic attacks, an anxiety attack is usually tied to a specific situation or fear; Like an exam coming up, speaking in public, or a trigger.
Note; Triggers can be mental and/or physical!
During an anxiety attack, a person may feel overwhelmed, tense, and scared, even if there’s no real danger present. Since the attack builds up gradually, it often takes longer than a panic attack- Whereas a panic attack usually peaks for around 10 minutes (Note; Every panic attack is different!), an anxiety attack can take up to hours before or after the trigger has happened.

✦ What can trigger an anxiety attack? What are the symptoms?
Anxiety attacks are usually a response to stress or a fearful situation. Things like social situations, overthinking, (school/work), and pressure can all be triggers to an anxiety attack. You might not realize it at first.
Symptoms can include an overwhelmed feeling, intense worry or fear, racing thoughts, shortness of breath, sweating or chills, and dizziness and/or lightheadedness.
Note; This does NOT mean that everything is an anxiety attack! There is a difference between healthy and unhealthy stress; Sweating or chills can be normal, as long as they stay at a 'normal amount'.

✦ Healthy VS Unhealthy stress; When is it too much?
Distinguishing unhealthy stress from healthy stress isn't as hard as it might sound. Some stress is normal, even helpful! It's your body's natural way of staying focused and/or alert. It can sharpen your focus.
A difference between healthy and unhealthy stress can be; 1. You have to give a speech in class; Your heart races a little, but you prepare and do your best. You have a funny feeling in your stomach and your hands are a bit sweaty.
2. Running late for something; You rush a bit, but your stress keeps you alert and helps you stay on schedule. You can feel your heart pounding in your chest, but it's nothing bad.
These are examples of healthy stress! Because you stress, you stay sharp and have that littlleee bit of exxtra motivation that you need.
Things such as;
Overthinking social situations; You avoid people or overthink after each social gathering. Thoughts like 'Did I say that right?' or 'Were they judging me?' can lead to overthinking -> Unhealthy stress!
Feeling overwhelmed or tired; You're exhausted and don't have any motivation to finish something. This gets you to think thoughts such as 'Why can't I do this?' or 'Why can't I finish this?' leading to.. You guessed it, unhealthy stress.
Are examples of unhealthy stress. This stress lingers for a longer period and often weights heavy on your shoulders.
So, how can you tell the difference?
Ask yourself;
Is this stress helping me or stopping me?
2. Do I feel in control of it, or is it controlling me?
3. Does it go away once the situation passes?
If the stress is constant, overwhelming, or affecting your health or happiness, it may be more than just everyday stress—and that’s a sign to reach out for help or talk to someone about it.

✦ ...So how can I tell if I'm having an anxiety attack? Is there anything to help?
You might be having an anxiety attack if you feel the following symptoms. Note; These symptoms gradually build up! Listen to your body and to what you feel; Is it passing? Is it still there?
Restless or uneasy for a while
A growing sense of dread or fear
Constant worrying about something (even small things)
Trouble focusing because your mind is racing
Feeling like you can’t relax, no matter what you do
Becoming more and more irritable or on edge
Feeling like something bad is going to happen, even if you're not sure what
Tense muscles or jaw clenching
Feeling tired or drained but unable to rest
Shallow breathing that gets worse as anxiety builds
Stomachaches, nausea, or loss of appetite
Feeling physically restless
The symptoms might come and go throughout the day, or build to a point where it feels like you're going to “snap” or break down.
Note; If these symptoms don't leave and start to become more then anxiety, it's a sign to reach out to someone.
But what helps during, before or after an anxiety attack?
Grounding techniques; In our post A list of grounding techniques and more, we talk about affirmations, methods, and other information (such as identifying the trigger).

Calming music and/or help videos online. There are a lot of Spotify podcasts and/or Youtube videos covering anxiety (attacks).
Reach out! Talk to someone about your worries. Is the trigger really as big as you think it is? Are you overthinking? Sometimes its best to have someone close to you that can 'pull' you out of your anxiety bubble.

✧A Respected Person (RP) is a Special Person attachment experienced by those with Narcissistic Personality Disorder  (NPD). This is the rung on the ladder of a person with NPD (pwNPD)’s 'ranking system' (explained below) that the pwNPD respects. This rung is usually placed somewhere between or even blurred with the top rungs (Anything above Average Person). An RP is someone the pwNPD admires or sees worthy enough to be given courtesy. ✧
✧Within NPD there is a mental “Ranking System” in comparison to the pwNPD. This can also occur naturally, if not chosen by the pwNPD themself. This ranking system is by no means the only kind, but it sets a good example.✧
✧Chosen Person (Chp): Someone of higher status than the pwNPD✧
✧Equal Person (Ep): Someone of equal Status to the pwNPD.✧
✧Respected person (RP) : Defined above✧
✧Worthy Person (Wp): Someone worthy to be a Chp or an Ep but not there yet.✧
✧Adequate Person (Adp): Above average.✧
✧Average Person (Avep): The average human being. ✧

Is there anything in particular you’re hoping to see in season 2 of TWAU (that is, if telltale ever releases it lol)?
Yup! There are numerous things, even (pls telltale release twau2)
Also, a reminder that telltale has been dropping games without release dates! There's still hope. (I'm aware that the game was cancelled, but it's been revived at the Game Awards 2019 upon Telltale's revival by LCG Entertainment.. Even though I'm not sure whether LCG will have the same 'randomly dropping games' trait, all I know is that the release date could be this year!)
Even though Telltale has confirmed that rather than focusing on Nerissa's connection to Faith, the series will have an ending similar to a film noir work, I'm still super excited for the story to-come! It's said to take place 6 months after the original game (1980's still). During twau2 viewers will think about the implications rather than Nerissa's cliffhanger (..Bummer, as I was quite excited for it.)
Also, read this article from 16th of December 2024, as it has some small updates to keep us positive
Onto my hopes for TWAU2:
The first thing that I'm hoping for is for the game to be set during Winter! And judging by the trailer, that has come true, which means I won't get into it too much.
The second thing; Dorothy, Cinderella and Fables! Time to over-analyse the trailer once more so I can show you my thoughts💪

There's three characters we can take see in the game's trailer ^
One of my thoughts about this might be related to the scrapped content in the first game! It's a stretch, I know, buuut... It might be worth it.
In the first game, one of Cinderella's stepsisters was meant to be the victim of the fabletown murders. You were able to play not just as Bigby, but Cinderella and Mr Toad as well!
Below is the (cropped) concept art for the murder of Cinderella's stepsister with the picture of the woman in the trailer;

...This is a stretch, I am well aware.. But who knows? She could be a stepsister.
On top of that, we can see a scarecrow and another beastly figure in the trailer! These could be the Tin man and the scarecrow from The wizard of Oz. This could make the woman a re-imagining of Dorothy (which would be absolutely wild)!
In one of the Fables comics, the scarecrow is seen among a large group of Fables fleeing the Adversary's forces. He also appears as a prisoner in the Golden Boughs Retirement Village in Jack of Fables #4 — "Jackrabbit," Jack of Fables #21 — "Gary Does Denmark" and Jack of Fables #28 — "The Book of Leadership: The Books of War, Volume One"

This could tie him to crime and possibly a criminal organization! The same goes for Tin man. Even though Dorothy ditched the Tin man in the comics, maybe they have reunited? I hope that at least one of these theories is true- Imagine we visit the farm to search for the Tin man? This concept would be SO cool and I hope to see it in TWAU2!
My third hope is for some more Snowby. They truly are one of my OTPs and I just NEEEEDDD more interactions of them!!! Fanart and badly edited TWAU scenes aren't enough 💔
My Fourth hope; New characters! We've seen Belle and the Beast, Mr Toad, Colin, the crooked man.. But I hope that in the new game, there will be other Fables as well (Of course I do hope to see some of the first-game Fables, but because Telltale has said that this will be 6 months after + A different story, the chances are low)!
To stop myself from posting about this for the rest of my days, I'll keep it short with just this. Thank you for the ask, Anon! Let me know if you'd like to see more :).

The STOPP method ―
S - Stop; Just pause for a moment
T - Take a breath; Notice as you breathe in and out slowly. Try the box/triangle method.
O - Observe; What thoughts are going through your head? What are you feeling?
P - Pull back; Put things in perspective. What's the big picture? What are the facts?
P - Proceed; Think about what you're going to do next carefully. Do what is effective.

The NOW method ―
Notice your focus of attention. What are you thinking about? What's on your mind?
2. Observe yourself and tell yourself what you're doing. Examples;
I am sitting
I am looking
I am watching
3. Wise mind: Where should I focus on now?

The balloon method ―
Sit comfortably, with your eyes close and your spine straight. Bring your attention to your breathing.
Imagine that you have a balloon in your tummy. Everytime you breathe in, the balloon inflates. Everytime you breathe out, the balloon deflates.
Think about what you feel; Your stomach rising up and down, the sound of your breaths.
Thought or worries may come out, and that's okay. Don't judge yourself for having them. When they do, acknowledge them, let them drift by, and turn your attention back to the balloon. You can also notice things; Sounds, smells, etc. Again, bring your attention back to your breathing. You don't have to do anything with your thoughts.
Instead of a balloon, you can imagine other things; A flower blowing in the wind, or a dragon's wings flapping in the air- Anything that can help you focus. If the balloon method doesn't work, make it the flower or dragon method! Personalise it to what helps you.

Affirmations ―
I'm safe.
I am not in danger right now.
This is temprary.
This will pass.
Feelings and thoughts come and go.
I will be okay.
It will be okay.
I am strong.
It doesn't feel okay, but it is.
I am enough.

Other Information/Help ―
Accept your situation:
Do not talk down to yourself! You are not unreasonable or dramatic, and there is nothing you should be ashamed of. You are allowed to feel (intense) emotions and you are allowed to show them. Don't always stuff your feelings away or tell yourself that you can't feel them, you don't have to have certain emotions in certain situations! You are feeling these emotions, and that's what we need to continue.
Make a safe space:
To prevent further triggers, start to make a safe space for yourself. In case you are in a location that has triggered something, leave and go to a safe place. Make it as comfortable as possible.
Think about each of your senses:
Sound - Is it a busy road, or is it too quiet? Do you need earphones and/or earplugs? Do you want to turn up music, or ambience sounds?
Sight - Is the room dark, or is it light? Do you want all of the lights on, or do you want to be in a dark room? Would you rather have a little light (nightlight, LEDs)?
Touch - Would you like to touch something, such as a stim toy or stress toy? Would you like to be touched (A weighted blanket, or a hug)? Do you need to change into soft clothing, would you like a soft blanket to stay warm? Would you like sensory such as water?
Smell - Would you like a scented candle, or maybe a scented plushie? Maybe you would like to make some food, or you'd like to smell something that calms you down.
Taste - Would you like to have something to chew on? Would you like to have some gum to chew or something to drink? What kinds of foods/drinks do you like the taste of?
Address the trigger (if necessary/Optional)
Once you have calmed down, review what has happened; What was the trigger? Was it a situation, a place, a smell, or a thought?
Analyzing or reviewing isn't necessary! If you feel you've already calmed down, there's no obligation to do this.
Ask yourself questions about the trigger. Some questions could be:
What are your worries about the trigger?
How do you feel after the trigger? (Your emotion, state of body, etc).
Did you feel any physical/mental reactions to your trigger?
What would you like to change? Is there anything to work on?
Reward yourself!
